VLC Media Player appears with an oversized window

Q: VLC Media Player appears with an oversized window

I'm running VLC Player with Windows 7.
Very recently, each time I activate VLC, it appears on screen with its right and bottom edges way out of sight. I can fix that of course by draging the top left corner this way and that each time but that's a pain and shouldn't be necessary.
Is there a way I can avoid having to do this in future, perhaps somewhere within the dozens of VLC settings?
I hope I've put this post in the right section and would be grateful for any help please.
My thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am running Windows XP Home Edition and about a month ago the Windows Media Player started opening when any user Logs in to their desktop. I have checked all my options within the Tools...Options setting within Windows Media Player to no avail. Also I have checked "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" and there is no shortcut there. Has anyone ever seen this before? Where else can I check to rectify this issue?

When I use WMP 11, I tend to drop folders of files onto the RH side Now Playing window. These are usually audio books with multiple small files. Anyway, I used to be able to make WMP open with the Now Playing window, but more recent versions (10, 11) seem only to open on Library. I know it's no big deal to click the tab, but can I set WMP to always open on the Now Playing window?

My Excel Worksheet has gotten so big that the menu bar is so far up (behind Excel's toolbars) that I cannot resize the worksheet or get to the minimize/maximize buttons nor can I see the first few rows. The only resizing that I can do is narrowing the sheets. I 'right-clicked' on the edge of the worksheet and was able to choose 'new window', but the old, huge one is still in the background.

How do I manually resize the worksheet to get it to maximize into the Excel window?

A:Oversized Excel Window - Can't see top.

Can you see the bottom right corner of the sheet? The square in between the vertical and horizontal bars.
If so, right mouse, arrange and choose one, like Cascade and see if that brings it back.

If real player and windows media player do the same thing which one is better?

A:Real Player Or Window Media Player

RealPlayer can play most of the formats that WMP can, plus some of it's own (ie formats created by the RealPlayer developer) which WMP can't play.

However, although RealPlayer plays more formats and you need it for some websites which stream audi/video content only in RealPlayer's native formats, It can be somewhat of annoyance when it's installed -- always popping up nag-screens to buy the 'pro' version etc. Something which WMP never does.

In essence, if you want all video and audio formats covered, you need them both. My policy is to manage with Windows Media Player. I just avoid using websites with video/audio content that need RealPlayer.

Is real player the same thing as windows media player? If they are the same thing which one is better?

A:real player or window media player?

Real Player (aka Real Obnoxious) is not the same as Windows Media Player. There are certain files that will only play on Real Player and certain Files that will only play on Windows Media Player.

If you are going to install Real Player I suggest that you print out the instructions here;

refer to the instructions when installing Real Player. Although these instructions are not for the current Real Player version there is still enough in the instructions as what to disable, to keep Real Player usable, but stop it from bugging you all the time.

I have a Dell desktop computer, 4700 series. the operating system is XP. It's about 5 years old. My internet explorer and other programs is working fine, slow, but ok.
My problem is Mozilla Thunderbird. When I open it, the window is very oversized. I can only see about 1/4 of it.
I can not read my mail. I have tried to reduce it, by grabing the lower left corner and turning it into the double arrow, but no luck, it won't work with the page, only the tray.
I'm very frustrated to say the least.
Any suggestions? Thank You, Wanda

I download music through LimeWire. All the songs (513) are listed there and I can't remove them. When I try it tells me cannot read disk or cannot read from the source file or disk. I cannot find out how to delete all these songs from my window media player. Please help

A:window media player

Hi, TSG has a policy of not allowing us to help users posting questions regarding usage of filesharing or P2P programs...and since your question does pertain partly to Limewire, we cannot help you.

Depending on your location, filesharing for you might be illegal, or legal, it is in some countries, but is not supported here at the TSG forums, sorry!

Our only advice would be to uninstall all P2P programs, run scans for adware/spyware and trojans, and also, uninstall and reinstall your Windows Media Player.

Why can't I post questions about P2P (Kazaa, etc)?
If you read our site rules, you'll discover that you may not post questions on how to use Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks such as BearShare, Kazaa, and the like. Although these programs, in and of themselves, are NOT illegal, they were designed and are used almost exclusively in an illegal manor. We do not support the illegal distribution of copyrighted material and will not answer questions regarding software designed to do so. For more information about copyrights, visit to expand...

why can't you buy a Genuine Copy of Windows? All you need is a valid serial/product key and you can change the key in your system. Why can't you take it back to where you bought it and demand a Genuine Copy of Windows? Once you have a valid key, you can call Microsoft to help you change the key.

Hello ShadowGal89,

I'm not seeing anything in this log. Can you tell us exactly what the pop up says?

Let's use a program to scan for any trojans that may exist. Download TDS-3 Learn how to use it at Make sure to update it after you installed it. You can get the manual updates at

When you launch the program, it will scan your memory for running processes. This will take less than 30 seconds. Next go to 'System Testing' on the menu and choose 'Full System Scan'. After that's finished, post the log file by selecting everything on the top pane (select from bottom to top).

If any alarms are found, it will be listed in the bottom window. Please copy and paste that here also if it applies. If you have problems copying the text, look (or search) for a file named scandump.txt and see if that has the alarms - post that here.

Hay Folks, trust you all had a great Christmas.

I have a problem, I need to rip a DVD of family past history, but All I see is Rip Cd. Now I know it can do it but I do not know how to configure Windows Media Player to do it. I look in Help support but it ant tell me nothing.

Can you guys give me some simple step by step ideas how to do it. I need to rip it then burn a copy of it for another family member.

I sure would appreciate it/ DC and God Bless. .

A:window media player/how to rip DVD

What file format is the DVD in? Go to My Computer,Put the disc and and browse the disc. If it is a DVD file format, there will be 2 folders in the root of the disc. VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS the audio file should be empty (don't ask why). In the VIDEO_TS folder there should be VOB files. If there are any other kinds of files besides those mentioned, it is not a DVD movie disc.
Commercial DVD movies discs have the above mentioned file structure and have Macrovision copywrite protection on them and cannot be legally copied. If this is a home made DVD, that's to say is not a store bought commercial DVD, then you can choose to COPY DVD in any CD burning program to make a DVD copy of the disc. Like Nero, Roxio, or any software that came with your burner. You can Try the free C D Burner XP
If the disc is not a DVD movie file format (as mentioned above) you can copy the files to your HDD and burn them to another disc. No software required to copy.

A:window media player problem

This didn't work for me, but it's one of the first things I have tried and I've read that it's worked for other people. Goto Control Panel -> Programs -> Default Programs -> Set Default Programs and make sure WMP11 is your default program for WMP11. You can also go to Set Associations which is in the same area.

If that doesn't work, open up WMP11 and click on Tools -> Options and then click on the Network tab. Make sure all the Protocols are checked. You don't need the 'use ports' option checked though. Under Multicast Streams make sure it's checked and under Streaming Proxy Settings, make sure HTTP is set to Browser and under RTSP is set to None.

I'm just relaying the settings to why I have now since mine is working now...I reformatted. I didn't reformat because of the WMP11 problem, but because of a wonderful MS update that I got on Tuesday (the normal day they issue their updates). For some reason, it totally borked my system and System Restore wouldn't even work, but that's another topic.

If you've not tried these settings, try them, if so, I think the only way to fix this is to reinstall WMP11 and I have no idea how to install it since it won't let you unless you haven't allowed any updates to WMP11.

The second: I have created another web page with the WMP object that also uses an .asx file so it can link closed captions on an .smi file. The video plays with captions on my test server but won't play at all on my production server. The paths to the files look accurate. What are the possible causes?

Perhaps you don't have the proper codecs. Try installing DivX and XVid.

Since upgrading to Windows 7, Windows Media Player hasn't been saving my window size after closing. I have "Fit Player to Video" deselected yet every time I open a video file the Media Player window opens in the dimensions of the video file as if it were, instead of resizing to the size of the window before the last time I closed it. If I just open Windows Media Player though it remembers the size of the window and opens to those dimensions. I didn't have this problem in Vista. Does anyone know how to fix this so that when I open a video file it opens to the size of the window before the last time I closed Media Player?

Hello everyone,
I still have this problem now and then. Not all the time.
I am using WLM.
Problem : Sometimes when I opened a music attachment from my WLM, Media Player would not show up, although music would come on. I had to open the Media Player manually. When that happened, I had to re-start the computer, and everything would be normal again. Note : default program settings had not been changed. Any ideas ? Thank you.

Hi t-4-2,

I know you say that default programs settings haven't been changed but have you made sure that whatever the file type of the attachment or song is, is associated with WMP in Default Programs-Associate a file type or protocol with a program?

Hello everyone,
It just happened today.
In the past, when I opened the music attachment from an e-mail, the Media Player will also appeared, automatically.
Today, not anymore. Still have sound, but no Media Player window, not unless I opened it manually.
Any reason(s) ? Thank you.

A:No sound in speakers when using Window media player

Double click the Volume icon in the task bar make sure nothing is muted. If you have another sound icon (eg) Realtek. Double click this, it will give you more information and ways to test headphones and speakers.

In the last couple of days I have had difficulty ripping cds... on Window Media Player it rips very takes about three hours for one cd. The CD/DVD drive also does not alway recognize the songs on cd if I try to play them any more.

I get messages saying the sound device is not working properly.

When I try to play a dvd on the cd/dvd drive it plays really choppy and the sound does not come on.

Is my CD/DVD drive dying? Or is this a software issue?

i have old version of realplayer and wmp, the pc is offline, i can't run some programmes on wmp and realplayer. how can i update ?

A:can not run programs on realplayer and window media player

I would recommend that you download and install the K-Lite Mega Pack. I don't think you will need anything more than that. But also take your time going through the instillation, like you can change the settings to better suit your speaker arrangement, and run a system restore point before it begins actually installing. I like this program because it runs pretty much everything except some RealPlayer stuff (which I fixed). But for the very odd file that doesn't run the way you want it to run, just run Windows Media Player anyway because they share pretty much the same codecs.

When I was using Windows XP if I wanted to grab a video/dvd screen capture while it was playing on the Window Media Player all I had to do was pause the video press "Ctrl" and "I" which brought up a box with saving choses.
Since I have changed to Window 7 I cannot save a screen cap by pressing "Ctrl" and "I". Why not? How can I do a screen grap?

What other suitable program are you trying to use. In the options of that suitable program, choose the file types that you would like to be opened with it. It will then open with that program. Have u tried that ?

Check this in Firefox.
Tools> Options> Content tab> make sure the box is checked: Enable JavaScript
Make sure that any extensions you might have that can block JavaScript are not blocking the site or are disabled, these include NoScript and Adblock Plus.
Type aboutlugins in the address bar of Firefox and hit Enter.
There should be an entry for Windows Media Player Plug-in Dynamic Link Library (File name: npdsplay.dll) and two entries for Microsoft DRM (File name: npdrmv2.dll and File name: npwmsdrm.dll).

Install some other DVD player application and WMP should use the codec installed with it or you can purchase the codec online. Doubtful that you'll find it for free but chances are if you purchased your computer it came with some sort of DVD software. For instance, if you install WinDVD then your WMP10 SHOULD then be able to play DVDs also.

As for your media player Which version are you using. And as I always mention have you been to windows update lately? Check for the latest updates. There may be a bug in your version of media player.

This may seem like a silly question (well it is I guess). When I open video clips with Win Media Player (Verison 9) it opens to a window size that takes up the eniter screen (note that it is not officially maximized). In fact this happens too in Internet Explorer when a new window pops up after clicking a link. I dynamically resize the window, but it doesn't seem to save the sizing settings.

This is a trivial problem as I maximize the windows anyways, but I'm a control freak. Anyone now how to fix this issue?

A:[Solved] Windows Media Player Window Size

In WMP go to View>Video Size> Uncheck "Fit player to video on start.

Set the window to the size you want. And close WMP. Now when you open videos, the player should remain small.

In an effort to get a midi file to play properly, I unchecked multimedia on the windows setup tab, clicked apply, and restarted. Then checked multimedia, and applied, and restarted again hoping to refresh the multimedia files.

After that, visualizations no longer display, even when they are selected, and the name of the visualization appears at the foot of the blank, black window.

Can someone give me some guidance, please?

Thanks, OldJoe

Hello. My Windows 7 machine hangs sometimes when I move a Windows Meda Player window around and a movie is played by the player. Sound continues but the system is non-responsive and the only solution is to press a reset button.
Did anybody experience this?

Hello, Welcome to SF,

Most of time the freezing issue is caused due to bad drivers or out-dated drivers. Make sure all your drivers are up to date. Uninstall your Antivirus / Firewall and see whether that makes any difference. Reboot the System in Selective Startup. Also post us the MSINFO32 file.

Please go to Start and type in "msinfo32.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Save the report as an .nfo file, then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
If you're having difficulties with the format, please open an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt and type "msinfo32 /nfo C:\Users\Public\Desktop\TEST.NFO" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Then navigate to the C:\Users\Public\Desktop directory to retrieve the TEST.NFO file. If you have difficulties with making this work, please post back.
