Q: How To Reclaim 24+ GB Of HD Space After Windows 10 Upgrade

If you've recently upgraded Windows 10 with the Threshold 2 upgrade(10586), this is from the http://betanews.com site on how to reclaim 24+ GB of hard drive space.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

Hi,

My C drive shows 2.98 GB free. I have deleted tons of programs and files, and it remains at 2.98 GB free. I'm also getting messages that my D: partition is full (I have never messed with it, so ???). Have run chkdsk /f, ran the dell repair utility that took all day yesterday, said everything was fine. Tried to reinstall Vista from the DVD and got a message that I need 7 GB of free space, so it aborts. You can hopefully see my problem, i.e., not enough space to reinstall Vista, but can't get the space I need no matter what I do. Have run disk cleaner and everything else, too. Hibernation is not turned on. System restore is not turned on.

My c drive is 288 GB on a Dell Inspiron 530 Desktop with 4 GB of ram. Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

I have wasted 2 days on this and need help BADLY! Thanks in advance for insights!

Hi all. When originally configuring this PC, I made a 2nd bootable partition where I installed xp 64 bit. I don't need the second OS, I thought it would allow me to run some xp apps/programs that would not run on w7, notably a TV card (ATI) for which no w7 drivers were written.

Anyway, as said, I don't need that OS or the extra partition and want to just reclaim that space as part of c:\. I have the computer management window open, but don't see how to proceed. Can somebody aim me to a walk-through on this?

A:how to remove partition and reclaim hdd space

you should be able to right click on it and select delete to delete it and then right click on "free space" and select extend. My wording might not be completely correct ....

I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 / 320 gig hard drive. I installed in older computer and only recognized 131 gigs of space. On the advice of a friend I went ahead and formatted that partition with the thought that after I installed Windows 2000 I would reclaim the lost the entire hard drive. WRONG! Now no matter what I do it only sees that 131 gig. The rest is gone. I have even installed the hard drive on a friends computer who is running Vista and it only sees the 131 gig. Is there anyway I can recover this hard drive?

A:Help! Reclaim lost Hard drive space

Once it is formated you have two choices. You can use a utility such as Partition Magic or Acronis Disk Director to stretch the partition. Or partition and format the unused space as D and E partitions.

Another option is to do a fresh install, this time using a Windows 2000with SP3 or higher CD (supports large drives).

I've searched but not found an direct answer. Pls excuse if I have missed something.

I'm running a Storage Spaces on a Win 8.1 machine with a few partitions. I just discovered that my large partition couldn't be enlarged over 16TB due to my 4kb cluster size so I created a new, smaller, partition on the drive capacity that I had left with
64kb cluster size. Fine so far. I then started moving files to the new partition thinking that I could somehow reclaim the unused space from the old, large, partition and then "transfer" it to my new, smaller partition. But now I'm stuck as I can't
find a way to reclaim this unused space. Help!
I've tried running the "Defragment and Optimize Drives" tool but no change.
What am I doing wrong?

I have 6TB in 1TB Hard drives. On my D an E drives is a Documents and Settings folder that has a shortcut icon. Whenever I try to delete them, the corresponding files are deleted on drive C! It appears that the files actually exist on D and E drives. So these folders are not actually shortcuts. I think these are left-overs from now dissociated backups. This means they do not appear in Backup and Restore. In adding drives, there was a lot of shifting of associated drive letters along with a lot of manual file moving. The Backup schedule is turned off and even where the Documents and Setting folders appear there are no longer any additional backup folders, just the Documents and Settings folder. How can I recover this space? I may need step by step instructions!

Thanks for any HELP!

A:Abandoned Backups? Can't reclaim drive space and keep original files

Right click on the icon.
If it shows "open folder location" then it's a shortcut to a folder
Click properties >shortcut tab under "target" will show the location of the folder.

Do you need to make the most efficient use possible of vertical UI space on your system?s screen, but have horizontal space to spare? Now you can shift the toolbar icons and their awesome functionality to a slim sidebar in Firefox using the Vertical Toolbar extension. As you can see above the sidebar even picked up on our Personas Theme to help it blend in nicely with the rest of the browser. You can access the options for the new toolbar by right clicking within the toolbar area.

A:Reclaim Vertical UI Space by Adding a Toolbar to the Left/Right Side

A vertical tool bar makes sense with the modern wide screen monitors.
With Opera & lots of tabs open i have the tab bar on the left with the text showing its much easier finding a tab if you have more than 20+ tabs open.
Just tried it out with Firefox b11 it seems more like a replacement for Opera's side panel but with less options.
Seems easier just to use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl B , Ctrl H & Ctrl J for bookmarks , history & downloads

How do I delete the partition between my drives C and D to reclaim the hard drive space? I am running XP Home on the computer. I have already formatted my drives C and D. I'm not sure how I ended up like this, but using Computer Manager > Disk Manager, I ended up with my disk 0 as follows:

System Reserved
85MB NFTS
Healthy (System, Active, Primary partition)

16MB
Unallocated

System (C)
139.64 GB NTFS
Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)

In addition, I have four other hard disks, and they are correctly formatted and partitioned (one partition each -- which is what I want with disk 0).

Objective: reclaim the unallocated 16MB and add it to the healthy section; likewise, reclame the "System Reserved" and also add it to the healthy section.

I'm rebuilding the system and don't have much software, so I could reload Windows 7 (Professional), but I'd rather avoid reloading those 100 fixes!

What should I do?

A:Using Disk Manager, need to unshrink and reclaim Disk 0 space

Just extend System Reserved into the 16mb space which was shrunk from it: Partition or Volume - Extend.

The rest looks correct although it would be best to see a screenshot of your maximized Disk Mgmt map with listings.

Make sure none other than SysReserved are marked Active.

When I try and run the Win 10 Anniversary upgrade (Windows10Upgrade28084.exe) I am informed that I do not have the 20 GBytes of free space on the C: drive required to proceed and the option to use an external drive is not presented:

As my laptop has only 90 Gbytes of available storage, with only 4 Gbytes currently free, obtaining 20 Gybtes free space by moving temporarily moving folders to an external drive is difficult.

Viewing the partitions with AOMEI Partition assistant I see that the Restore partition uses 20 GBytes of which 9.43 GBytes is free:

Is it possible to copy this partition to an external drive, delete it, expand the OS partition by 20 GBytes, run the Windows 10 Update, reduce the OS partition size by 20 Gbytes and then copy the Restore partition back (using AOMEI Partition Manager Standard)? I fear that the upgrade may require the Restore partition to be present in order to run OK.

A:Making space for Windows 10 Upgrade

Problem is that you can't merge partitions that are not next to each other.
Somehow you ended up with too many partitions, is that an upgrade from older windows on an OEM computer ?

A:Not enough disk space to upgrade install windows 7?

Hello Allan, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since this was for corrupted files, you might see if downloading and running the 64-bit (x64) System Update Readiness Tool for your same installed 64-bit Windows 7, restart the PC afterwards, and try the sfc /scannow command again may help to fix any corrupted system files.

If that doesn't help, then I would recommend a clean install instead for the best results.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Marius3 Don't know why the Win10 Upgrade is trying to write to your Recovery partition -- but it should NOT be doing that. My guess is that you're trying to do the Upgrade through Windows Update -- which is the least reliable and most problematic way to do this. Instead, I would suggest that you use this link to create Win10 install media:  Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool - Windows Help Then, insert that media into your PC (while Windows is still running) and launch the Upgrade from there. Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on my post to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

After its done its thing hit the"How do i prevent reinfection" tab....
In particular pay attention to the patches for the operating system regarding the ByteVerify vulnerability which is how you got infected in the 1st place.

When it is finished restart your computer.

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

Then......

Click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

Hi,
I'm in possession of a Lenovo Yoga 300, which has Win 8.1 on it. I offered to upgrade it to Win 10 for the owner (the notification says it's fine for this). However, the SSD is only ~20Gb, and after a disk cleanup has only approx 5 or 6Gb's free. Windows upgrade said it needed more (16 free if I recall).
How do I get around this? There's no optical drive, so would I be able to use a USB thumb drive to install 10, would that get around it? If I could get Win 10 on it through upgrade procedure, I could format the SSD and do a clean install via the USB again. If I'm right? Or do I tell them they're stuck with 8.1?

A:Not enough space for upgrade

the reason you do not have enough space for the upgrade - is because windows 10 will rewrite the current OS and place the old OS in the Windows.old folder... Thus you really will have 2 OS's on current disk...

If you have a SDCard insert it into the bay and proceed with the upgrade..
windows should use the SDCard and move the windows.old folder over to it...

Then, go into c:\ windows and delete all the files in blue which statr with a $symbol. They are only folders that once contained Windows Updates you no longer need to keep. Then scroll down to the Software Distribution folder and to Download. Empty that folder. Look in Control Panel>Power options and make sure Hibernation is turned off then in System, adjust the size of System Restore so it takes up only 4% of the disk space. Restart the computer and see hwo much space you freed up. http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/365810-windows-show-low-disk-space-win-dir-stat-shows-different-space.html Relevancy 45.15% You can reclaim around 200MB of hard disk space following an install of SP2 (Need to have disk formated in NTFS though). The primary concern with doing so is due to Windows resource management and significant conflicts that can arise especially when they are running in real-time protection mode simultaneously. Even if one of them is disabled for use as a stand-alone on demand scanner, it can affect the other and cause conflicts. Anti-virus software components insert themselves deep into the operating systems core where they install kernel mode drivers that load at boot-up regardless of whether real-time protection is enabled or not. Thus, using multiple anti-virus solutions can result in kernel mode conflicts causing system instability, catastrophic crashes, slow performance and waste vital system resources. When actively running in the background while connected to the Internet, each anti-virus may try to update their definition databases at the same time. As the programs compete for resources required to download the necessary files this often can result in sluggish system performance or unresponsive behavior. Boot your PC with the media you created. You should now be able to do partition changes without problems. Second, may be folders on your C: drive named$Windows.~BT and \$Windows.~WS. These are used by the Upgrade tool to store files needed for the Upgrade. If these are hidden, will have to change your settings in File Explorer to see them, but once you find them, then remove the folders. Also, you need to remove the Windows.old folder.  Here are the instructions:  http://www.howtogeek.com/223821/what-is-the-windows.old-folder-and-how-do-you-delete-it/Once these are gone, you have a lot more free space in the C: drive.Good Luck

I install windows se7en by upgrading from vista; using se7en upgrade.
It takes for one hour and a half, then completed.
I go to check disk space on C, then it appears 117 GB used
therefore I find out system requirement of windows seven. It is just 20 GB for x64
So I think the remaining must be some updated files or required space for Se7en themes.

But what exactly are they from and what is it?
and how can I hand it

please give me some information.
thank you very much

If you did a clean install. Some of the extra GB is from windows.old. Your old OS and all your files etc.

If you did an upgrade, some of that is your own programs, etc.

A:[SOLVED] Win 7 Upgrade reinstall option - Not enough space error

Hi Tom.

I think the not enough space error refers to the 100MB system partition and not the main disk partition, but, honestly, i dunno any solutions for this.

I honestly think you'd be better of moving this thread to windows section, or simply making a clean install.

Cheers, L2D.

This has never happened to me before.. and my friends have no clue either. I was just going about my business, trying to send a message, when I tried to send the message, it told me to "Log In" so I logged out.. and back at the login page.. it told me to reclaim my account. So I had to identify pictures of my friends and match the names with the pictures. After I was successful, it told me to never visit sites that looked similiar to facebook, but wasn't the real facebook. Then it told me to have different passwords for all my accounts.

Why did this happen so randomly?.. Never happened before?

Yes, I believe you can. Windows 10 is free for at least the first year from release.
You can still get the Windows 10 ISO downloade and be able to upgrade using that instead of the downloaded installation files too.

A:XP to windows 7 upgrade incompatibility issues caught by Upgrade Advis

1st, you can't upgrade from XP to Windows 7, you have to do a Clean Install which means boot the DVD and format the drive, so nothing you do to XP will have any effect.

Having said that, you can cheat

See here: Upgrade Install - XP to Windows 7

My recommendation would be to do an image backup of the XP system then do a Clean Install (with format), apply all updates then start restoring your data from the backup. All software will have to be reinstalled, it can't be copied from the backup to Win 7.

I have got myself into a bit of a mess.

I installed my version of windows starter on my mom's PC which was previously running vista. To see if it improved the performance or if the laptop itself was rubbish. It did so I purchased an upgrade to windows home premium. When I enter the upgrade key it says I need the current key is invalid for upgrade and that I need to phone a number. Does this mean the software I brought is useless. I didn't want to buy a disc as I had read that using a upgrade key meant everything was kept. Is there anyway I can use the software I've brought. The computer recognises the key as an upgrade one.
Thanks.

You can not use the Windows Starter from your Notebook on your mother PC.

A:Re: Satellite Pro A300-2C4 'Windows 7 Professional Upgrade DVD' to upgrade

Hi TKG

Upgrading from WinXP to Win7 is not supported by Toshiba nor by Microsoft.
The only possible way to upgrade (go from 1 installation with some data to Win7 and keeping your settings and data) is from WinVista SP1 or later.

So regardless of how You look at it, You need to get XP out and either begin with WinVista factory installation + any 1 million updates that were released after this, OR
you can boot up from the Win7 media directly and install clean.
The second method saves a lot of time BUT have some negative side effects - namely not all drivers and utilities will be available in the final system if installed clean.
Some packages from WinVista works well in Win7 and are for that reason expected to be in the system during the update.
Hence, if You do a clean install, they will be missing.

However, they might not cause any trouble for You if they are not there, but that is not known until You're there and can see what You are missing.
Basic functionality should be expected though (WLAN, LAN, Sound, video....so on)

So, think about what You want to do and get busy with either recovering your unit with the WinVista set, updating, and then running the Toshiba Upgrade DVD, Win 7 upgrade and finally the Toshiba upgrade DVD again, OR just install Win7 clean + adding as much as possible / needed from the Toshiba Upgrade DVD.

Good luck!

I'm about to buy a new laptop from Costco with Win 7 Home Premium. On my old (now smashed) laptop I have a Win 7 Ultimate install. Can I just use the Ultimate serial key to do the Anytime Upgrade on the new machine? I keep reading that I need to buy an "upgrade key."

Thanks

Hi,
You will need an upgrade key to initiate the ultimate download, but if you can manage to obtain an ultimate installation cd your serial should work, also if you use this winisoutils - Windows ISO Disc Image Utilities

you can change a windows install cd (if you have one) into a universal edition one, very handy.

to answer your question an upgrade key is not the same as a serial, the upgrade key is just to download the installation while the serial activates it, and a serial from one edition will not work with a different edition.

hope this helps

Hi I have a HP pavilion g6 laptop on windows 7 home premium. A few weeks ago the space bar enter back space and up and down arrow keys stopped responding whilst I was typing on face book. I shut the laptop down, this did not work. I checked the filter and sticky keys weren't on , I put them on then unchecked them to clear. This did not work. I went on the HP help site where they suggested I take the battery off and hold the on button for 60 seconds then power back up. I did this and to my surprise it worked. Great I thought. But just a couple of days ago the same keys stopped responding again. I tried the same fix but this time nothing.
Can anyone help.... Is this a common fault ? I need the keys to work again ASAP.

Verify that there is enough space on C:

Then copy the file from my computer remote server.

A:How to bring back the amount of free space and used space on a hard drive

I'm a little confused about your question

You can't see how much drive space you have left when viewing your C drive via My Computer, or similar?

If you right-click on My Computer and select Manage, when the new window pops up click on Disk Management from the left hand side. What does that tell you about C drive? Assuming your C drive is actually a hard drive (and not a CD drive or something, though I have never heard of this happening and don't even know if it's possible to have C as your CD drive), you should see details at the top of the screen such as how much space you have left, by percentage of total capacity, as well as GB

Am I the only one to notice and complain over this in W8.1.

This morning a new Adobe Flash update has appeared, KB3079777. The update is sized at 17.9mb. Nothing is running on the PC, its idle and with no disk activity. Free space is 55.4GB. I apply the update and free space immediately falls to 54.9gb. This behaviour is consistent with every such patch applied. Now over time, that space will return which suggests that something else is going on here. But what ?

A:Free disk space & space used by a single Flash Update.

As in, keep all of my files and programs? Or will Windows 7 Ultimate clean my computer of everything? Because I hear that in order to save anything, I need to move it to an external hard drive. And if that's what I have to do, what's the difference between the Upgrade version of Windows and the System Builder of Windows if they both wipe my computer clean? If the only way to save anything is to move it to another storage space?

A:I've got Windows 7 Ultimate, the upgrade edition. Can I upgrade from Windows XP?

Yes there is no direct upgrade from XP to 7.  You need to do a clean install.  You can use WIndows Easy Transfer to simplify moving your documents and settings across.  Programs need to be re-installed in 7 (the upgrade advisor will tell you of any known compatibility problems).  It's quickest and easiest using an external HDD.  Guide here.  The installer is the same for all - the difference between the different versions is in the license.  The Upgrade version will not accept your product key if you try to install it on a computer that doesn't already have an OS.  The System Builder (OEM) version is tied to the machine it's installed on - the license does not allow for it to be transferred to a new PC.  The "full" retail version can be used for upgrades or installation on a new PC.
