Maximum memory per slot?

Q: Maximum memory per slot?

I have a dell dimension 9200 and the motherboard can handle a maximum of 4gb of ram, but is there a limit per slot?

In other words does it have to be 4 x 1gb sticks of ram or can I use 2 x 2gb sticks?

The reason I ask is that I've had lots of bsod and crashes recently and after performing lots of tests using memtest it seems that 2 of the ram slots on my motherboard are bad meaning I only have 2 good ones to use.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Terry, welcome to the forum. Here is what the specs say about maximum memory: The memory sockets on the system board can be populated with up to four industry-standard DIMMs. These memory sockets are populated with at least one preinstalled DIMM.  To achieve the maximum memory support, you can populate the system board with up to 4GB of memory configured in a high-performing dual channel mode. Here is the Hardware Reference Guide for the computer.  You will find the above information on Page 25. The maximum hard drive size with Win 7 is 2TB. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

I have an dell inspiron 15 (3521) pc with i3 processor.
What is the maximum RAM in can install per slot and in total on this laptop?
In the technical specification manual under the Memory heading it is mentioned "Configurations supported - 2 GB, 4 GB, 6 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB". What does this means? Is it per slot or on the whole?
Should I always install same capacity RAM on the two slots (like 2x 4GB) or am I allowed to mix up like one 4GB and one 8GB?

I am trying to buy some RAM for a Dell Inspiron 1100 Laptop. On the crucial website it says that each slot shouldn't exceed 512 MB of RAM. It says there is only a maximum of 1 GB of RAM for this system. I wanted to get 1 GB of Crucial RAM for $32. The only issue is that the RAM comes in a 1GB Module. If I was to buy two 512 MB Modules the price wold be around $15-20 more expensive. Does it really matter if I put in a larger RAM module than what Crucial says the system should use. Any Thoughts would be appreciated.

Is it possible to exceed my system specs maximum memory rating.I have a stock Gateway Performance 933,933MHz,Intel "Fedora"motherboard using an Intel 82815 "Solano"chip.I used Gateway's Support site for info on my mobo which show's "Three memory slots supporting a combined maximum of 512MB of SDRAM),I currently have 512MB installed but recently installed the RAM hog Windows XP(got rid of ME) and wanted to make sure I still had enough RAM left over to run programs and games smoothly.I understand with XP the more RAM the better. Thanks

A:Maximum Memory

Ok I am just guessing here since its near bed time, but I would imagine that its a max of 512MB for each DIMM slot on your board, meaning a max of 1.5 GB (assuming 3 slots).... Are you sure its combined maximum and not max per slot???? (again I have not checked because its beddy-bye time for me soon...)

Operating system have certain max limits as well, but with XP professional I believe its 4 GB so I think you are safe on the OS front, its just the hardware we must now consider.

You must be doing something fairly trippy though if you need over 512 MB of RAM, unless you are doing some serious number crunching, graphics work, database work, etc.

The domain controller at my work has like 512MB and its contending with entertaining like 2000 odd users so I think that over that amount is, at this moment in time for the industry, a little excessive.... (Again unless you are doing certain graphical work, etc.... )

Otherwise, I am inclined to think that any slowness you are experiencing is the result of misconfigurations / lack of tweaking on both hardware and software levels in your PC. I have 512 MB of RAM in my server, and although I would like to upgrade soon to 1 GB, more or less just to show off to people, its not something high on my agenda right now.

512 MB should be fine for XP so maybe there's something else going on here....

Its doubtful you will get any joy with more RAM installed in your machine than your mobo can handle.... It may POST and then again it might not.... Maybe post with just the max RAM it can address.... There might be a BIOS update to fix that but that's doubtful.

My main observations would be:

1)Why the hell do you want more than 512 MB anyway? (I will be perfectly receptive to a good answer....)

2)No, more than your motherboard manual states will almost certainly not work.

Hi all,

I'm thinking of buying Win 7 64bit and maxing out my memory.

I have a Giganyte GAEP45C DS3R mobo.

Apparently it supports (from the gigabyte website):

2 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 4GB of system memory
Dual channel memory architecture
Support for DDR3 1600/1333/1066/800 MHz memory modules
4 x 1.8V DDR2 DIMM sockets supporting up to 16 GB of system memory
Dual channel memory architecture
Support for DDR2 1066/800/667 MHz memory modules

Does this mean I can max out at 20Gb? I already have two DDR3 DIMM installed at 4Gb.

Any help would be most appreciated as I don't want to waste my pennies.

A:Maximum Memory

You can install up to 16GB of DDR2 in 4 slots OR up to 8GB of DDR3 in 2 slots apparently. not both at once.
although it has 6 slots... 16GB is the upper limit, if you choose to go with DDR2.

I'm looking to upgrade the memory on my G6 laptop, but am finding conflicting information on how much RAM is allowed.  In the HP G6-1050SE Product Data Sheet, the limit is said to be 4GB.  In the G6 Notebook Maintenance and Service Guide, the maximum appears to be 8GB.  Can someone confirm what the maximum allowed memory is for this laptop?  Thank you ahead of time.

Swut. The manual does say "Supports up to 8 GB of system memory". The specs say "Upgradeable to 4 GB DDR3" If this is your CPU "Intel Core i5-480M" The specs say for that CPU. Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type)8 GB I would think you can upgrade to 8GB. REO

Well, the URL below shows it will certainly take 2 SODIMMs for a total of 8 GB of DDR3. I really don't know if that is the true maximum configuration. Sometimes it is possible to go "beyond the max." Clearly YMMV in that situation. Crucial RAM link ... It's a little hard to find RAM info for TimelineX models. Personally, I typically go for used Samsung or Hynix/SKHynix DIMMs/SODIMMs. Almost always 8 GB will be enough for a laptop. If you have a friend that has a laptop with 8 GB of DDR3 you could try putting those 2 SODIMMs in your laptop for a test. USE ANTI-STATIC PRECAUTIONS! Better safe than sorry.

You might want too try using a memory multiplyer if you can find one "I dont know if they still make them or not" they where popular when memory was only 4mb or 16mb etc...I am not sure if it will work with anything more then 4mb - 16mb of memory

Hello. This is a very small and simple question, but it troubles me not to find an answer. As you can see, my Windows detects only 3.7 GB of RAM when in total there should be a complete (almost) 4GB. The info is in my specs. I tried to change the BOOT advanced options in the BOOT tab of msconfig to accept the maximum memory (4096). Then I restart it, but then I look and it's still the same, 3.7 usable, and when I check the advanced options, the box is checked but now it's a 0 where 4096 used to be. Now, I read in other posts that this was due to the GPU card, which takes memory, but I don't know if this applies in this model, so I post an screenshot of HWiNFO too. Hi Damian Adelle,

3.7 Gb of usable RAM is quite good and normal with most of the system. Once you would check in BIOS it would show you 4 Gb only. 3.7 Gb is available and usable for operating system, rest if for pre boot functions like loading windows and processes.

Check this article which should answer your query:

The usable memory may be less than the installed memory on Windows 7-based computers

Hope it answers your query. If you have any further queries, please feel free to contact us.

If the U410 has two RAM slots, why is it not possible to upgrade from two 4gb chips to two 8gb chips for a maximum of 16gb? What prevents the other 8gb from being supported?

A:Why is the maximum supported memory on the U410 8g...

Based on the spec of U410 the maximum supported memory is "8GB max/ PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3, non-parity,dual-channel capable, two 204-pin SO-DIMM sockets - * System automatically clocks down for processors with 1333MHz DDR3 memory controller". Based on this the maximum memory to be used in a system is dependent on the processor used. You may want to dig some more info on this issue, so head on to Intel's website and lookup your processor model number to determine the maximum memory that it is capable of addressing. And there are numerous questions similar to yours if you search their forum.

With other words your notebook has already maximum RAM and upgrade is not possible.

My Question:
I want to purchase GA-H170-Gaming 3 (rev. 1.0) motherboard, but I want to understand one thing. The graphic specifications of this board says that "maximum shared memory is 512 MB" what this means? I rely on Intel HD Graphics and want to use them. Even If I have 16 GB RAM then this motherboard is locked to only allow 512 MB to be used by Intel HD Graphics or this can be increased? Please assume that I have no dedicated Graphics card for the purpose of this question. Thanks in advance.

Gigabyte reply:
The max shared memory on channel MB can be set up to 512MB. This is a general spec from Intel GPU and you can also see this spec on other competitor's MB such as ASUS H170.

However please note that even though the shared memory of the onboard GPU is limited to 512MB, system still can occupy the rest of onboard RAM size if needed.

My Question:
Thanks for your answer. To clarify it means that if an application needs 2 GB of GPU memory, then in that case this motherboard will allow to fetch this amount of memory for Intel HD Graphics from ram?

Gigabyte reply:
Take 3DMark such kind of GPU benchmark S/W as an example:

When the S/W requires more RAM, it will occupy the RAM size from system RAM automatically.

Does their reply means that Intel HD Graphics can share memory from system ram more than of 512 MB, if required? If yes, then why they use word "maximum shared memory" if more memory can be shared? Further what is the solution for applications who initially do not start on seeing that GPU memory is 512 MB which is lower then their requirement? How can we tell those applications that this memory can be increased at the later stage when required?
I hope you people understand what I wanted to say. Thanks.

by max 512mb memory, it means that is has that much of dedicated memory. This means that this memory is automatically reserved from the ram.

This may help but I can't assure that it works because I never tried it: How to Increase Intel HD Graphics Dedicated Video Memory

I don't know much about intel graphics but by what Gigabyte said; yes, if the program needs more ram, then more ram will be occupied.

A downside to occupying more ram is that it would result in less ram available to use for applications and the os.

My memory usage is up to 95+% when I am running a backing on another PC (using that PC). My main PC is almost useless as it is using 95% or so memory...BUT...this/my PC is NOT doing the backup...only connection is that it is on my 5 PC home network using the same external USB backup drive that does have PC 2 doing a backup ?

PC #2 is using Acronis True Image Home (latest version/update) to do it's backup on the external USB drive attched to this PC.

Have attached jpg's and Process Explorer 64 log during this freeze up ?

What could be causing PC #1 to use all it's memory because PC #2 is doing a backup at the same time on a external USB drive on my home network ?

PC #2 doing the image backup is also running very slow but when the backup completes...both machines return to memory usage...more or less ?

I want to the maximum amount of memory that XP SP3 (32 bit) can support. I have Dell Dimemsion 5000 computer with 915 chipset motherboard. I currently have 3GB (1GB x 3) DDR2RAM installed.

I also want to know is there any limitation in SATA concept in terms of supporting 1.5TB (1500GB) SATA hard disk in 915 motherboard (which has ordinary SATA port - not SATA2)?.

It would be grateful if anyone posts answer to my question.

A:Maximum memory that Windows XP SP3 (32 bit) can support

It's 3.5 Mbytes. It's a hard limit; no exception.

I can't "prove" this is true, but most computer enthusiasts know this.

You can install 4 Mbyte, but XP will only see 3 1/2 of them.

But i want to use all my memory so games run better! it bothers me really hard
Here is my dxdiag,PLEASE HELP!

A part of the installed/system RAM is automatically assigned to onboard/built-in video/graphics adapter. The minimum RAM for 64-bit Windows is 2GB, double is much better but with video editing, large spreadsheets and databases more is even better. And it may be necessary to follow Windows Help on Virtual Memory/paging file for 1.5 times the physical memory or more if programs need it. Or for that program you might check out ReadyBoost and plug in a USB Thumb/Flash drive or SDHC card if you have a card reader in the computer.

I didn't catch the nVidia video in your Specs but would wonder if there is an onboard adapter on the motherboard that hasn't been disabled when the card was added.

Herewith a link to the tech spec of my laptop.

I have 512M of memory in it, have upgraded the BIOS to the latest available, but when putting another stick of memory in it to bring it to 1Gig, while the BIOS sees the sum total of memory, the Properties of My Computer, does not.

The spec indicates a maximum permitted level of memory being the 512M but I don't understand just what exactly it is that is preventing this memory to be Seen by all elements. If the BIOS can see it, why not the rest of the system/computer/software(???)

Many thanks for any help offered.

As I understand it, you want Windows to use "as much memory as possible", rather than whatever it wants.

Post a screen shot of the memory tab of Resource Monitor and the performance tab of Task Manager.

If you want to use more memory, you could always open more Chrome Windows. Or remove the unused memory, so that your RAM usage is closer to 100% of the available--up from about 33%.

Looking into buying the Lenovo 510s, I see "Up to 8GB" listed as supported memory. However, I've done some research and some Lenovo laptops, while they also only support 8GB of memory officially, can be and have been safely upgraded to 16 GB of RAM. My question is: Is this true of the 510s? The CPU specifications page from Intel for the 6200U/6500U both say 16 GB is no problem, and Crucial even has a 16GB dimm listed as "guaranteed compatible" for this model--I'm not sure, though, if this means it will work but only recognize 8 GB or if 16 GB is truly Ok. Is there any reason 16 GB could not be used? Perhaps some motherboard memory controller limitation? I would love to have some input on this before deciding on whether or not to purchase this laptop. Thanks!

@ankurtr? Your correct that 16GB is the maximum memory supported for your laptop. As far as warranty goes some say it would void the warranty some say it would not. I think of it as this if you add the memory yourself and nothing gets damaged then the warranty is still good. But if you damage something doing it yourself then the Damage is not covered. REO

How about the "Maximum Memory"?
Do you think it'll help if I used all the memory to boot Windows?

and if not, what do you think it's good for?

A:Boot Advanced Option (Maximum Memory)

Those options are present for testing configuration options (software testing, driver testing, debugging).

Any reference to setting these options to aid in booting or increasing system performance is nonsense.

The settings are there to limit performance, not to increase it.

Because its slightly burned in the inside slot, could i install a new memory module in that particular slot? or do i have to change the memory slot thats on the mother board?

A:Memory Slot

You are probably lucky if you didn't kill the whole board. The slot is most likely toast. If you were brave enough to try another stick in the same slot, it may not work, or it may burn-up something else. I don't think changing the slot is really an option. Motherboards are not exactly repairable items.

Put a card in it and:

Look in Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device manager

Expand the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" and see if a USB mass storage device is listed.

Also look to see no yellow ? or ! are shown, indicating missing drivers.

I just purchased my computer yesterday. I removed my Sony Memory Stick PRO Duo from my digital camera and was going to download them to my computer. The slot came with a Dell piece. My memory stick is too small. It did not come with an adapter and I have no idea how to get it installed. Any ideas???

A:need help with memory stick slot

It is likely that the two aren't compatible.

What model Dell do you have? The type of adapter that you need depends on what slots your Dell has.

Also - most cameras come with a USB cable. Could you use that instead?

So recently my colleague tried to upgrade the RAM in his laptop, but he ended up messing up really bad he actually broke the only memory slot on the motherboard (yikes!). He asked me to take a look at it for him, and I was pretty surprised how badly he had messed it up (as in there's no way it could be fixed). I told him he might have to replace the entire motherboard, but he really can't afford that right now. I let him know that might be his only option, but I decided to ask here before giving up. The rest of the motherboard is fine; only the memory slot is broken. So is it possible to replace just the memory slot without replacing the entire motherboard? And if so, can anyone help me out with doing this? He does really need his laptop, so any help would be awesome.

A:Broken memory slot

How long can he go without a laptop?
That is a big project. You will need to be a master with a solder gun. Just getting the old part off without melting the motherboard will be an adventure. There are a LOT of pins.

First you will need to find the Brand and model # of the motherboard. You can use CPU-Z for that - it will list the info on the third tab.

Then, armed with that info you will search for the RAM SOCKET replacement. This is where it will get interesting, as the available sources will be in Asia. Shipping will kill you (for a $3 part). And you will probably need some translation skills too.

Your colleague really couldn't afford to mess his RAM Socket up. Now his best bet is to buy a new laptop.

actually, i was used to a pc with 160mb-ram - which is 32 + 128. now i own a faster one with one single 512mb-slot. but unfortunately, some problems occur: gta3 is collapsing all the time, i cannot copy a normal 1024x768 .tga-image to clipboard via corel (»low memory«) and after watching some freshly downloaded quake3-bots i got the message »low memory«, too. sometimes, even some multitasking surfing can bring me up to fully busy memory - is this a technical problem or am i asking for too much power!? i heard something like this memory-damage would lead to the problems i have.
speaking against it is a rather stable quake3 while in game and a fascinating stable 1nsane played also in 1280x1024 - without any stinky problem.

thanks and regards,

A:¿maybe my memory-slot damaged?

I have been building computers for years and never found a reason for the placement of the memory slots on a motherboard. If you look at a board that uses an Intel CPU, the slots used are1-3 and/or 2-4. If you look at a board that uses an AMD CPU however, the slots used are 1-2 and/or 3-4. Does anybody know why this is? No, I'm not trying to make a better motherboard, I'm just curious enough to finally ask.

Thanks for any info anyone can give.

A:Memory slot placement

'If you look at a board that uses an AMD CPU however, the slots used are 1-2 and/or 3-4.'

refer to the MSI K9N - which see;

Dual channel with slots 1/3 or 2/4.

Assuming that you installed 2 Gb in 4 modules of dual channel ram and it is used from byte 0 to 2047 linearly, then assuming that the average 2 Gb ram install running XP uses about 50% of the Ram running avg8 (as example), you would get heating in ram modules 1 and 3 and none to speak of in 2 and 4.

Thus, heat separated components and better cooling.

My opinion.

This is a hardware question for anyone that can help me out. I have tried to upgrade the ram in a dell dimension 5150, after seating the additional ram one of the existing slots containing ram started smoking with an obvious plastic burning smell. I have removed all ram and the burning is still occurring when powering on accompanied by a loud beeping noise. It's clear that one of the slots is melting. Need to know what my options are now. New board, or can this be rectified. Obviously the slot is now damaged and can't be used but there are three remaining. Never experienced this and unsure what has caused it to happen ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The beeping noise, is it a one long beep? Or is it accompanied by another long or short beep?

I was told by Lenovo that one slot will accomodate 1 gig of memory, instead of using 2 half gig sticks. I was also told about something called "memory boost" as an external memory source to increase memory. has anyone heard of this? I want to run PhotoshopCS and need 1 GIG of memory and don't want to get new motherboard(the machine is long out of warantee). can anyone help on this issue?
thanks, JeffB

A:Bad Memory Slot in IBM T30 Laptop

"readyboost" is a feature only available for Vista, where it can use a USB memory stick as an alternative to paging back to the hard drive, it's not really in place of RAM.

I have an IBM T30 laptop which has 2 slots for memory. Which is the primary? I am adding a 512 mb memory module and I want to know which slot should contain the 512 and which
one the remaining 256. BTW, even though I have a 256 in each slot most of the time it only
recognizes a single 256 module. Thanks for your info.

My motherboard just went out on my pc and I was wondering if there is something that I can hook up to my laptop that will let me read whats on my pc memory, kind of a external memory slot or something. I've been searching google for a few hours and I can't find anything and I know you guys always know what your talking about and answer very quickly. Any help would be appreciated.

A:External Pc Memory Slot

Your actual data is not stored in the memory, its stored on the hard drive. And it's very easy to connect a hard drive to any other PC, there are many adapters for this.

Here's a version that simply connects a drive, either SATA or PATA(IDE) to a USB port without any enclosure:

Here's a version that basically converts the drive into an external drive that you can safely use that way:
This one only supports SATA hard drive with a connector like this:,r:0,s:28,i:160&tx=102&ty=76

A:XC-704 Expansion Slot & Memory Upgrade

Ok, Sorry looking up the model at Kingston and a couple other sites didn't show your computer and seeing I hadn't seen any I was confused. Based on what I have found maybe a Model from other country.  With that said it looks like it comes with 2gig DDR3L Ram and is Upgradable to 8Gig Also looks like yours comes With 1 PCI Express x16 Slot. I am not sure with the PSU and with that slot if you would be able to upgrade to a different Graphics Card. GPU and size of case would put a huge limit on what could be able to fit...  James

How can I upgrade my laptop memory? There isn't a memory slot at the bottom of the laptop.

A:I can't find the memory slot to Satellite S70-B-10V

Memory slots on this notebook model are placed under the bottom cover so when RAM modules must be exchanged or upgraded bottom cover must be removed.
Please note: on some notebook models RAM upgrade is supported by notebook owners and RAM upgrade steps are described in user?s manuals document.

I your case such upgrade is not supported and RAM upgrade should be done by authorized service provider.
Generally speaking bottom cover removal is not complicated but you should not do it alone. This will cancel valid warranty.

In my opinion, before you do anything contact nearest Toshiba service provider in your country and ask for help. Simply pick up some info about price and compatible RAM modules.

Hi guys,

I'm working on a windows vista computer that would restart randomly and get a window exception bsod. I took out a memory module and ran memtest86 with memory in slot 1. Failed. Swapped it out with another memory stick but on the SAME slot on the motherboard. Failed.

Took that stick, put it in another slot on mobo. Passed. Took the other stick put in in that next slot, got the restarts again. Could it be that the memory slot that went bad on the mobo also caused the memory stick to go down with it?

A:Solved: bad memory stick AND slot?

Yes, that could be possible.

Hi, I have a new G72-25OUS laptop, I'm wondering how to use the slot on the left side, that says SD-MS/Pro-MMC-XD? I assume its to put a SD card in from my camera to upload photos, do I just stick it in and if so, how do I get it out? I don't have a manual, didn't come with one and can't find info in the help section. Hope someone knows how to do this. Thanks.
