I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Normally when logging on, the welcome screen shows Dell Icon and My Name which I click to log on. Then, "Switch User" under that. Now I am only getting "Switch User" and when I click "Switch User" nothing happens. Can't log in. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. (I am posting from a different computer as I can't log in to mine.)

Hello T Clouatre, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if doing a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before this happened may be able to undo and fix this for you.

Hope this helps,

I've searched the forum and could not find an answer to this problem.

I have a Windows 7 Enterprise machine where at the login screen the "Switch User" button is missing and so I am unable to clear the last user.

Just about all the results I got back on this topic was how to re-enable the "Switch User". This doesn't help because I can't login to make the change.

Hi All,

Whenever someone in my family walks away from using the computer with Windows Vista, after the Screen Saver, I'm always taken to a screen that allows only the last user to log back in, but when someone else wants to log in, they need to hit the "Switch User" button to choose a different name.

My question is... Can I have the computer just go back to showing all the users' names (so I don't have to click the "Switch User" button to login as me). I would like this to work, just as XP did... so if the last person who used the computer has to log back in, s/he would just have to click their name again...just like XP did.

Thanks so much!

Starting several weeks ago, after someone used it, my computer started going to the page I after the log off, switch user page when it was not being used. This is the page I would get to if I delibertly went to the start menue, clicked " log off" then clicked "switch user"

In order to get back to the main screen I now have to click onto the block with my user name. .

When the computer is not being used , the screen goes blank (as it did before) (because of power managment), but once I hit any key, what comes up is the little box I have to click to switch on as a user, instead of the main screen. .
How can I get the computer to work the way it did before.

Here's the scenario:
We have 4 users on a home pc--1 admin, 3 limited users.
Administrator logs off. Limited user logs on. Limited user logs off. Administrator attempts to log on but screen goes black and appears to loose signal. Monitor displays loss of signal. Eventually a single limited users icon will appear on a blue screen and the system is locked. Must do a hard restart to reset. Also, Task Manager appears to not function. Ctrl Alt Del does nothing except put icon in task bar. Have checked to make sure it isn't disabled. Have run Nortons, AdAware, Spybot. All systems appear clean. All systems are updated. I have searched but cannot find any help on this.
Any suggestions would be greatly apprreciated.

PS...I just discovered i cannot shut down from the start menu...have to use hard shutdown.

I've set up a secondary account on my Windows 7 machine and I need to find out how to disable the switch user thing.

In Windows XP, I could hit winflag+L and switch user as I would instantly be taken to the user list.

In Windows 7, for some reason they had to complicate everything. When I hit winflag+L it just displays a picture of my account and a "Switch User" button, which for me serves no purpose what so ever.

Is there any way I can regain Windows XP's user switch functionality in Windows 7, where winflag+L takes me directly to the user list on the login screen?
Thanks in advance

Our company's domain using generic "User Logon Name", i.e. 001, 002, 003 and so on, each "User Logon Name" will have personalized "Display Name", e.g. Mary, John etc., but a problem is when a print job printed by a user is hold in the print queue of a network printer, other users won't know who is it (the owner of the print job may shown as 001, 002 etc.) and so not able to ask that user to remove the print job. I'm using XP-SP2 Pro on a stand-alone PC. There are multiple user accounts.

When there is no keyboard or mouse input for x minutes (I haven't measured "x"), XP performs a switch user operation, and returns to the "Switch User" screen. To resume working, the user has to login (again).

Note: in this configuration, CTRL-ALT-DELETE is not necessary at either the original login or this moronic re-login.

I have tried tweaking various settings in Control Panel -> Power Options, including "Advanced" options, to no avail.

I am going 'round & 'round with this issue. I log on as limited user account for security. However, when I am on that acct, I cannot copy files to the external HP drive - I have to switch over to the admin user account to do so. In order to use the limited account for this operation, I have read that you should disable simple file sharing, (on admin acct), then rt clik on the file u want to copy - this then opens a menu with security tab where you are supposed to be able to give full control to the limited acct for that file. My admin acct that brings up this menu has those boxes to check grayed out. Also, do you have to rt click and give full permission for any file that you want to copy? (once you have this all figured out) - Seems a bit cumbersome. Any ideas anyone?? Thanks.

The search box in Windows Exploer is a real pain the ass. I regularly need to find files in a large directory with a lot of sub directories, with thousands of files.

The annoying thing is the way that as soon as I start typing it decides to start searching - but with so many files this just jams things up and stops me typing. I have to wait for it to sort itself out before it will let me type any more and this is becoming extemely tedious.

It's getting to the point where I have to type the search into notepad then cut and paste it into WinEx, which is clearly a ridiculous state of affairs.

How do I switch this highly annoying feature the hell off?

I've upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1 and stupidly created a Microsoft account during the upgrade procedure rather than using a local account (which is what I was using before). I want to go back to using the local account and have tried going to "Your
Account" - "Disconnect" - "Switch to a local account". However, as I want everything to go back to how it was before I upgraded I've tried entering the same username as before but I keep getting the following message "Windows

Any help to make this problem go away would be much appreciated!

A:Switch to local account - "Windows is already using that name"

According to your description, I think you may made a misunderstand for your operation. In the interface of ?Switch to a local account?, it means to create a new user account, as you already had a same name local account, you would receive this error report.
If you want to switch to your local account, you can follow the steps below to access other account.
Firstly, check your current user account. Control Panel\User Accounts\User Accounts\Manage User Account. Verifying whether your local account still exists.
Secondly, WIN+C, click Power, then choose

When you install a new program, what determines where it is listed: All Users>Start Menu>Programs or "user name">Start Menu>Programs?

A:What determines if a program is installed under "All Users" or "user name"?

Usually some of the programs give you an option to install it under your user name or for all users during the setup process. So say if I was installing (CVTae) a resume programming on a Windows XP computer it will after the installation process ask me if I want to install it as all users (so it will show up on the all users start menu so everyone can see it) or just for me. That's where you can decide for yourself where you want to install it.

'So usually it's the user's choice of where it's listed in most cases, but certainly not in all cases.

Hope that helps mate.

You can try doing a repair or system file check...
Scan For Missing/Corrupt System Files...

Windows XP comes with a wonderful tool called System File Checker (SFC)
Itscans and verifies the versions of all protected system files after you restart your computer...
To Do This:
Click Start menu, and then click the Run icon.
In the small box that Opens, type the three letters: cmd then click the OK button.
In the command prompt window that just opened (a black background and white text), type the following command:
SFC /scannow
And then click OK
You must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to run SFC..
You will need your Windows XP CD during this procedure if SFC needs to get an original file. Please remember that Windows XP can have multiple instances of a .DLL file and remember which version is for which program.
I have been asked if it is possible to have a "progress meter" show when SFC runs... This is the registry hack you need. PLEASE do not go messing with your registry if you do NOT know what you are doing!

A:Run "cmd.exe" as a given user and "as administrator" in command line

Hi Lea,

I don't believe that what you want to accomplish is possible. This is because Windows only "runs" one login at a time, unlike some true multi user operating systems, such as Linux.

If your logged in as U1, then you can only perform operations as U1, or as the Administrator. As far as running things as the Administrator is concerned, I believe in this case that you simply inherit the Administrators permission levels, thus permitting you to perform elevated activities.

If your U1 login has Administrator privileges then running as Administrator will be no different to running as U1!

Good luck

There are five "users" showing in the MMC program in Windows 7 and only one is working. The problem with this is that it does not contain any of the information and links that I use daily.

The accounts are as follows;

Administrator (disabled)
D (not disabled)
DCM (disabled)
Guest (disabled)
Homegroupuser$ (not disabled)

I cannot remove the "disabled" status or rename any of these users. An error pops up saying "access denied".

The prior version of Windows Live Mail (2009) did include this feature.

Why has this feature been deleted from the current version?

It is not an efficient use of the user's time to have to highlight and paste a selection of an email into another program in order to print only the selection desired. Alternately, it is wasteful of paper to have to print an entire email message when only a selection from it is needed.

I cannot fathom why Microsoft removed this essential feature from Windows Live Mail.

After installing the drivers, only the administrator account is usable. I can't seem to figure out how to configure so that they all still work. To be able to logoff and logon under a different account is what I want. It's definitely something to do with the Cisco card settings, not the computer.

Would really appreciate if someone could give me any ideas how to configure so that those accounts work.

I recently installed an SSD in my PC, and did a fresh install of Windows 7 in the process. I unplugged the HD with the existing install of Windows 7 during the installation process, and plugged it back in after.

Now I'm trying to retrieve some settings for an app I had on my previous installation. But when I go to my old Windows 7 boot drive (now D: ) and try to access the AppData folder, it seems to be showing me the contents of my current AppData folder on C: instead.

Is this what Windows does? If so, is there any way around it, so I can retrieve the application data that I'm after?

What are the exact steps that you're taking to access it from start to finish?

I work at a local public access tv station where people come in and make there own tv show then have it aired. We are getting a lot of files piling up that are from past members and past projects and want to make it so that they MUST use their own storage and whatever they do/change when they are on the computer is deleted/restored, so I want to make a temporary user account. This account type seems to be just what we need and it is builtin to Windows but the only guides that I can find are how to disable it, not set it up.

So to summarise, I need help setting up a temporary user account in Windows 7 Pro

trying to see the hidden folders, I accidentally checked the hidden box. Now Windows 7 has hidden my userid folders. How can I get it back. I tried restoring it from the copy of this morning but it won't. Help from a person that should have known better.

A:I accidentally checked the "Hidden" box for userid under "network/user

Are you saying that you right clicked and toggled the hidden box from the properties window?
Or was this something you did in folder properties.
I'm a little fuzzy on exactly what you've done here.
A screenshot would be helpful, you can attach them here easily using the paperclip icon.

A:Windows 7 takes forever to load the select user/switch user screen

Work through these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start.

The steps begin with disinfection from Safe Mode or boot disk, since if Win7 is badly infected it may not repair until cleaned up. Then everything possible to start it is sequenced.

I would also do the hardware tests provided before rescuiing the data to run Recovery or get the superior Clean Reinstall.

Hi, I have two user accounts used by my wife and myself and Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) works fine on both user accounts. Very occasionally our daughters visit and use our pc. They use the Guest account. I just happened to log into the Guest account and got a pop up message saying that Microsoft Security Client User Interface has stopped working. When I closed the message I noticed that the MSE icon was missing from the Notification Area. When I tried to open MSE from the Start Menu I just got the pop up message again and MSE would not open.

I would add that I have no other anti-virus software running on my pc apart from MSE.

I would appreciate any help that anyone could give me

I have Windows XP Pro, SP3.

I always hear about the user profile in Windows, and that it stores all kinds of user information, and user preferences. I don't know exactly where this information this is stored, or how it stores this information. Can somebody please explain this to me? It can't be too in depth.

Thank you,

Issue: I'm trying to enable "Power Users" to install software and devices so I'm not bothered day and night for my admin rights. I've gone under Local Security Settings > Local Policies > Load and unload device drivers and have added "Power Users" and I get nothing.

I've added even "Users" and "Everyone" and still nobody is able to install software or drivers. When "Users" are added people are able to add local printers however.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? I'm at a complete loss. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

quot dependency chain quot quot windows quot internet quot windows explorer quot At the time of this writing this search in Google will produce one result at best Am I searching the wrong things I have tried a couple handfuls of variants and "dependency 7" chain" internet "windows explorer" "windows I am coming up with zilch Though I am fairly well versed in Windows from working on other people's machines I decided to stick with good old XP because of one issue above "dependency chain" "windows 7" internet "windows explorer" all else When I instructed my firewall to block Windows Explorer from accessing the Internet it completely cut me off from the Internet no ifs ands or buts My understanding of why this is happened leads me to believe the dependency chain for Internet access goes through Windows Explorer I have long had a habit of blocking my File Manager of choice access to the Internet because well it's a file manager Admittedly my one experience with Windows on my own machine was a retired student version of Server R but as soon as I found out that was the case I decided not to make the move to Windows and went back to my XP installation I believe I was using Sunbelt Personal Firewall at the time I now use PCTools Free Firewall Is this still the case with Windows Is there a workaround if it is I haven't tried to recreate this on another person's machine KronKyrios

A:"dependency chain" "windows 7" internet "windows explorer"

Hi KronKyrios, welcome to 7F!

I did find some very old information that may shed some light:

"Launch Browser Windows in a Separate Process" Setting Is Not Available in Internet Explorer 5.01 or Internet Explorer 5.5

You can go into Services and check:
Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
Network Connections
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Windows Management Instrumentation

R-click on each one, then Properties, then the Dependencies Tab.
You would have to cross check each one that is listed.

These are in Firefox. I'd like to turn off all of these dumbo messages. If you know how, please let me know how too.

A:How do I turn off "Share Location," "Allow Full screen,"

Follow this guide from Mozilla support: https://Permissions Manager - Give certain websites the ability to store passwords, set cookies and more |
You can set individual web sites or you can do like I did and follow the second part of the guide and set for "all sites". You'll see the settings to ask or block either request to the right.

For further exploration try typing about:about into the address bar, be careful using the resulting page, all the links are mozilla/firefox related; Some of the links are benign, and others can get you into trouble.

Hey guys.
Can you pleas explain me what does Hardware Acceleration means and why is that when it is turned on, it causes a green screen on the video (with audio working).
It happened to me once in YouTube, where I had to go in to settings and unpick the "Enable Hardware Acceleration", then it worked!
And 2nd time similar thing happened in Cyberlink PowerDirector 10, when I imported .mp4 and flv video files and it showed me green screen with audio. After unpicking "Enable Hardware Decoding " it was fixed.
My Sony VAIO has:
CPU - Intel Core i5 M430 2.27GHz
GPU - AMD Radeon HD 6500M/5600/5700
Does this mean that I have a problem with my hardware, or maybe I need to set up something??? to ba able to use Hardware Acceleration. As I understand I should be able to use it!!??

Thank you
Have a nice day

A:Enabled "Hardware Acceleration" causes "green screen"

I don't know what the problem is but the only time I had this issue is when I installed a VM and get black screen on youtube so I had to enable that.

I have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons...

This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct. Any help much appreciated.

Hello Aster, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened may be able to fix it.

Hope this helps,

Hello , I recently changed my username in win-7, beside changing it in the "User account" panel, I also changed the user profile folder and registry entry for that, the only thing I could not change is the value in "Net users"...

The problem that I have with that is wen trying to login remotely with RDP I still need to use the old username.
I know I can add a new user but can I change the exiting entry instead? what is it exactly? what's the difference between "Net users" and "User accounts" ?

Thank you.

A:"User accounts" and "Net users"

Hi, when you first install windows it cretes a user who is registered owner , you need to change this to your new registered owner or it will crop up all over the place. Open regedit do the appropriate backup first and navigate to this key:-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion in the right pane locate the entry for registered owner(may also have registered organisation populated as well) and right click select modify, type your new user name in the value data box.

For net user have a look through this:-

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

I surely would appreciate some guidance on the proper way to switch back to a Local User and disassociate my computer from Many thanks in advance for reading this and all replies.
