Un-linking or disabling Offline files for certain folders or locking down to just one folder

Q: Un-linking or disabling Offline files for certain folders or locking down to just one folder

Last year folders folder locking for files to Offline just Un-linking or certain down or disabling one I upgraded my old Small business server to server standard Un-linking or disabling Offline files for certain folders or locking down to just one folder and shortly after had issues with some of the offline files Un-linking or disabling Offline files for certain folders or locking down to just one folder on the server we use almost all laptops here that users take home at night and we have folder redirection set up Un-linking or disabling Offline files for certain folders or locking down to just one folder through group policy for the my documents and pictures folders stored in server Network users and these folders sync locally However we also have network drives set up pointing to server Network and server network scans as drives N and S Files in these network drives somehow got set to be available offline and caused issues with versioning and nbsp people coming in and finding themselves in quot offline mode quot Thinking this to be user error I updated group policy to employ these policies Remove quot Make Available Offline quot command Enabled nbsp Remove quot Work offline quot command Enabled nbsp Today however I found that a laptop that had been deployed After all of this had been put in place was having the same problem with files on the N drive showing as trying to sync outside of the users folder Is there a way that I can lock this down to only sync the items in the user folder for documents and pictures Outside of that folder we have other company documents and databases that get problematic if they try to sync changes between users and it's causing a lot of issues ijerry

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi I'm sitting with a big issue at a customer and ask for your help Environment - x Windows R file servers configured in offline before disabling Files: Check files? Offline users integrity CSC DFS - approx x Windows clients Laptops - x network shares Common Common and Homefolder nbsp - quot Offline Files quot and quot Folder Redirection quot enabled for entire user profile - Everything is controlled by GPOs and there are no login scripts Symptom Due to some faulty settings in Offline Files: Check users CSC integrity before disabling offline files? the client GPO and the fact that the quot Common quot shares was set to allow Offline Caching of files and folders the majority of clients now suffer from sync issues and conflicts Most of the conflicted files are located in the users home folder but some users are also seeing the same issues with files located on the quot Common quot shares The users themselfes are not allowed to enable Offline Files as this is disabled by GPOs The only folders that should be treated as Offline Files are the ones in the users home folder Solution A new set of GPOs have been created that correctly set up quot Offline Files quot and quot Folder Redirection quot These are linked to a test-OU and the computers and users applied to that OU are not suffering from the problems above Question When we move a client the cache will be deleted and all non-sync'd work will be lost Today we manually look at every users sync center and try to resolve the conflicts before we move them to the new OU This is extremely time consuming when we are looking at potentially affected clients Is there any way one could check the integrity of the clients CSC Offline Cache before they get moved to the new OU We have SCCM R for inventory but I cant find any good report there Maybe scripting with PowerShell or VB All advices are welcome Best regards Jimmy

I am still having issues getting offline files to work correctly I have a notebook running Windows Pro that syncs with a options available dissapeared option in tab offline" "Always folder and Offline Files desktop also running Win Pro After a clean install due to the many issues I've had dealing with Offline Files before I just synced folder to see if it would work And it did Windows synced the folder and it was made available offline I could easily make folders available offline by simply right-clicking "Always available offline" option and Offline Files tab dissapeared in folder options on a folder and clicking the option quot Always available offline quot I was also able to successfully sync my Documents Desktop and Favorites folders using folder redirection Oddly when I tried to make a new folder available offline a few weeks later the option is gone for any other folders new or previously existing And when I right-click on a folder or file and choose Properties the "Always available offline" option and Offline Files tab dissapeared in folder options Offline Files tab no longer shows as well I have a fairly simple home network setup My notebook computer syncs with a desktop PC also running Windows Professional I call this the quot Server quot PC Nothing has changed network-wise or configuration wise on either PC I haven't messed with any network settings or played around with offline files settings since the last successful sync No new networking hardware has been added either Screenshots below screenshot See the three folders below with the green sync icon over them But notice how the quot Always available offline quot option is missing from the menu when I right-click on any folder screenshot below If I right-click on one of those quot original quot folders and go to Properties notice how the Offline Files tab is visible However I can no longer uncheck this folder from being available offline If I uncheck the quot Always available offline quot check box Apply then hit OK nothing happens And when I go back into the Properties for that folder the check box is checked again It's like it doesn't even save my settings Oh and another strange issue while I'm here The quot Media quot folder shown below doesn't actually sync It shows that it's marked to be available offline but as soon as I disconnect from the network it's not available But the other folders DO sync regularly Only the Media folder doesn't sync at all the media folder just has a few video files less than MB screenshot below Here is screen shot of me trying to make the quot ClientData quot folder available offline but the quot Always available offline quot options does not appear when I right-click on it Any ideas as to what would cause this and or how to fix Keep in mind that I disabled and re-enabled offline files increased the space reserved for offline files played with the group policy settings trying to force the folder to sync and then I reformatted the database all to no avail Thanks in advance

Hi All,

One of my users is having problems with offline files and folders.
He has alot of data he needs offline (i have increased the size available for offline files). now whenever he creates a new folder it will not sync offline. It brings the error "The system is running with the last known-good configuration"
By default all new files and folders you add into a folder that is available for offline become available, but this is no longer the case. Has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

Hi, all

I am looking for a software for files and folders hiding/locking.
What can you tell about Folder Lock
(http://www.newsoftwares.net) and Folder Castle (http://www.magneticsoft.com)?
Folder Lock imho has the confused interface and problems at work under Vista.
Folder Castle has all features which I need and it works under Vista.

Thanks.

A:Looking for a software for files and folders hiding/locking

If you happen to be using Ultimate, BitLocker is built right into Vista.

In general I trust no other than TrueCrypt http://www.truecrypt.org/.

Hi, I would like to make a batch file that will stop other users from getting into specific private folders on the computer.

There are a few ways I can think that might work for this, but not entirely sure how to code a the last 2 ideas on the list (user restrictions, encryption).
I'm almost certain though that each of these are achievable via batch file.

Changing file Permissions to only the current user.
User file/folder restrictions
Or encrypting the folder so it is unreadable with one batch file, then making it so another batch file can un-encrypt it.
Basically, I want to be able to lock a folder while I am not at the computer, then be able to unlock it when I come back.

Any idea which method is best to use, and how to code it?

We redirect My Documents to a network location. The W7 Documents library is made up by default of the Public Documents folder and My Documents (redirected). It seems when the folder is redirected users get an information bar indicating that some library features are unavailable due to it being on an unsupported location. Now, the solution to this seems to be enabling offline files which copies the files locally allows the folder to be indexed. I've tested this and the message goes away. What if we don't want to use offline files, primarily on desktops - how can we index this location and get full library functionality if the folder is redirected? This is typically due to anti-virus, which tries to scan the files. Try disabling your anti-virus and see if it still occurs, if so then maybe try a different anti-virus, or adjust your settings.

Our users "my documents" folders are set up for redirection to \\ourserver\users

We have an XP based machine ( machine X ) that was used by person A, each time they logged off it synchronized as expected.

However machine X is now used by another user B.

Whenever user B logs off user A's offline files still keep synchronising, have deleted all the files from the offline folder I still cannot see a way of stopping user A's files and starting the new user B's files sync.

User A's files were accounting type files and are sensitive files that should not be viewed by others, however by still sync to the offline files folder they can be easily viewed.

Any thoughts as how I can stop this and re-direct the new users files to sync as I need to release this pc for general use.

Cheers.

You need to unmark the old users' folders for offline use, apply, reboot and make sure that the machine can see the domain and be made happy on that front, log in as the new user and then mark those new folders for offline use.

Recently a coworker was trying to CUT/PASTE files from their My Documents folder to another location. During the procedure our file server crashed and shutdown. Their My Documents folder is a re-directed and synchronized folder.

I was able to restore the users entire home drive from the previous nights backup to another location. To date the user has been working from this secondary location but wishes to have all the files moved back to their My Documents so that synchronization can occur for offline access.

I am unsure of how to go about doing this safely.

I'm thinking that I should re-initialize the users Offline Cache and Database first, delete what is in My Documents now, and then copy the restored data back to My Documents. Then, at that point in time re-enable offline files and perform a sync.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks,
Scott

I tried searching for "offline" in the forum and scanned through the 250 odd titles that came up but could not find reference to relocating the offline files folder. I frequently take an image of the system drive as a backup but, with an ever increasing offline folder (windows\csc), this is getting unworkable so I want to move the folder to my data drive (D:\).

I've tried using a symbolic link to a folder on the C drive (as I've successfully done with the OneDrive folder) but win10 seems to object and stops working.

Surprisingly, with google there's loads of references to doing this with previous versions of windows but I can't find anything Win10 specific. Does anybody know of a reliable way of relocating the csc folder?

A:Want to move Offline Files Folder (Windows\CSC)

Yes, there is not a method to do yet. I tried all steps of W7, WIN VISTA!!.

This has not mattered in the past but I have now networked this to a laptop and want to share files and use syncronisation between the two machines. Any help would be much appreciated

A:Missing Offline Files tab in folder options

You need to ensure that Fast User Switching is disabled: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307853

Also, make sure you are enabling offline files on the computer that is accessing the network share, the one that does not have a copy of the files locally.

I can setup offline folders on a Windows 2000 Pro client so the files are available when offline.

Is it possible to configure offline folders so that even when the computer is connected to the network the offline folder is still used.

What we want to acheive is for the notebook user to always use a local copy of their data but to also have an up to date copy on the server.

If i need to clarify anything or provide more details then please let me know.

Hi,

Newbe with a question.

I am assuming it is possible to enable offline files of multiple network folders but I can't get it to work.

Situation:
Running Win7 ultimate 32bit on a domain.
Server with 2 folder shares:
Share1: test1
Share1: test2

Mapped to a network drive (Share1) and was able to enable offline files.
I then mapped to (Share2) on the same server and the option Always available offline is clickable. Unfortuntely it does not do anything.

Is it just not possible to create multiple offline available folders using different mapped network drive folders from one server?

Cheers

Most probabaly a virus problem. So try to remove it first before applying this registry fix
(Backup registry before edit-->http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756)

1. Click “Start” -> “Run…”
2. Type “regedit” and click “Ok”.
3. Find the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL
4. Look at the “CheckedValue” key… This should be a DWORD key. If it isn’t, delete the key.
5. Create a new key called “CheckedValue” as a DWORD (hexadecimal) with a value of 1.
6. The “Show hidden files & folders” check box should now work normally.

One caveat. That many nested folders will slow the computer to a crawl unless you have really good hardware (RAM (8gigs), CPU,. i7, etc).

lol, i got no idea what's wrong with it. located in my documents/downloads I open the folder and it comes up empty. If I rename it to some other name, its contents show up actually, strange thing. Also, if I open the folder the long way, that is c\users\myuser\my documents\downloads it opens fine, even i don't change the folder name, any ideas? I think the error is in the registry, used Revo Uninstaller to uninstall facemoods and it messed up the registry to a state that pc became useless, had to backup registry, but seems it never recovered from it lol.

Would be easy if you had a backup from before the problem. DO you have the OS dvd to do a repair install?

Normally when I'm in a folder like My Documents, typing the name of a folder selects the folder I want to access. Recently, typing a name selects files with a similar name. How can I fix it so that typing a name in Explorer selects folders before it selects files?

A:Typing folder name selects files, not folders

Have you changed any of your File Settings? Such as the Search Settings?

In the Explorer Window Press Alt > Then Tools > Folder Options

In View, Reset to default
In Search Reset to Default.

See if that works and fixes it for you

I am curious as to how I would change the folder icon for folders containing files (and other folders as well). I have changed the default folder icon for plain folders through my registry, but I cannot seem to find the location for folders such as those below

http://prntscr.com/36m1mp

http://prntscr.com/36m1ke

My main concern is being able to change the folder icon for the first picture so that the icon for the folder itself will be different, but it will still show real-time images of the files contained within it. How, if it can, would this be accomplished through the registry?

I want to automate one process that I do from time to time. I have many folders, sometimes like 90 folders and I want to move them all into a single folder, the filenames are the same so they overwrite. I can overwrite them, in fact, I should, I just want to move all files from many folders into one folder, not doing it manually. Is there a command in CMD that can do that? E.g I have Folder\Subfolder 1... Subfolder 90\ so in 1 folder I have the subfolders then I have RootFolder\ where I want all to be and overwritten, MOVED not copied

Ok so I recently downloaded a giant ZIP file that contains all the material I'm going to need for my college course. I come to find after unpacking the ZIP that each individual file is, for some reason, split up into subfolders. I was wondering if it's possible to compress/compile all the folders and their content into one single folder.

Thanks for the help

I would move the files in the "c" folder to a new temp folder on the desktop, then delete the tree, B C folders. Now the top level folder A should be empty, move the files there and remove the desktop folder.

Removing 40GBs from the disk is a pretty massive intervention. It must be a program that does a lot of activity on the disk. The Disk Defragmentation program comes to mind. Yours is probably set to automatically defrag from time to time (like it is on most system). I would switch it completely off and defrag "manually" like every 2 weeks (that suffices) and then check immediately afterwards for possible damages.
Very often you have processes that get into each others hair. It is nearly impossible to properly diagnose that. You have to look at all the programs you installed yourself to see whether there may be a possible culprit. It is apparently not the security program (which can sometimes make trouble) because you switched that already.
A full virus scan with e.g. SuperAntiSpyware cannot hurt either - although your problem does not look like one typically created by malware.

You can delete the older ones

using the Duplicates files button as many dupes are there on purpose.

Hey all! I am playing CoD4 and I am experiencing some problems with mods and files...
When I installed CoD4 I let it install as default. In the program files, Activision, Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. Directly after the install I downloaded Patch 1.6 and 1.6-1.7
After that I went to the Call of Duty Modern Warfare folder so that I could add my custom maps. But the folders I am looking for are missing. The folders located in my CoD4 MW folder are: Docs, Main, Miles, Mods, pb, Zone. Then there are 2 folders missing: players and usermaps.

My game runs fine, but I cant do anything more... I have all my ranks, but I cant find my players folder. I did a search throughout my pc, for the names of those folders but couldnt find anything... I reinstalled CoD4 twice...

Any help?

The folder "usermaps" is created once you start downloading custom maps off of the server. If you don't have the folder yet and want to install a custom map, simply create the folder and place the map file in there.
The "player" folder just contains information about your save points and the active profile in the game.

Hope this helps

Hi,
I am writing a program and wish to save user preferences in the AppData\Local directory, which seems to be the right place to do this. On some (but not all) computers I tested, the folders which I create with my C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\ directory
and the files that they contain are removed when I log out.
The same happens if I try to create a folder and a file: manually:
C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\testFolder\testFile.txt
I haven't been able to find any mention of this problem on the Web.
Is there some sort of parametrization in Windows that controls whether files and folders are automatically deleted from this directory ?
Thanks.

I have WP11 and want to create a document (index) with links to a folder instead of the documents inside the folder. Is that possible? If we link to a folder, then it will take the user to the entire folder and they can then choose documents within. If we link to the documents instead, each time a document is added, the user will have to add it to the index page and create the link. That makes it too complex for our users and we end up with a lot of missing items in the index as well as unlinked documents.

A:Solved: WordPerfect 12 and linking to folders

In case anyone is wondering about this same issue, I found out that I needed to use 'quick link' to link to a folder. I hilighted the text I wanted to link from and asked to create a hyperlink. When the selection box came up, I typed in this path (using my own specific drive and folder names - also you have to have the 'file:\' in front for it to work):

file:\C:\Folder\

That made a quick link directly to the folder where staff can then select documents within that folder without having to add all the documents to the index and link each one (which was more work for most staff than we required).

I want to run a batch file that would delete files in a folder (and its sub folders) that are older then 30 days. I'm somewhat new to scripting so any help would be appreciated. The path to the folder is "C:\Documents and Settings\user profile\Application Data\Program\Program\folder\company name" That folder has many random sub folders - I need the batch file to delete any file in those subfolders older then 30 days.
Is this something that can be done with a batch file or would I need a higher level script - like vb scripting?

A:Move files from original folder to existing folders - w batch file?

Hi Jordansl,

Here's a full solution to the task you mention. A double For /F loop is used to extract this ID from each file name.

Code:
@echo off

REM For each file in %source_location%, copy it to
REM %copy_to%\*ItsID*, then move the file to %move_to%.

set from_source="C:\Local\Data"
set copy_to="C:\common\UserGroup\UserLocation\Test Data"
set move_to="C:\IDArchive\Data\Old Data"

pushd "%from_source:"=%"

Hello, I want to make it easy for my brother to upload his files to our family FTP server. I have created a new folder in his My Documents called My Website and decorated it with an appropriate icon. How can I make it that when he double clicks the folder it goes to ftp://ftp.ourservice.uk/hisname and displays the webspace. I think there is a way to do this is folder shell but I'm not sure how. I don't just want to make a shortcut.

Any ideas??

Thanks for any replies!

right click the shortcut and choose properties, change the target to ftp://ftp.ourservice.uk/hisname

Hello, I need a bit of help with creating a symbolic link between two folders. I tried mklink but it gives me incorrect syntax error. In windows 7 of course.

I have one empty folder, C:\link\empty folder, and one folder with files in it, C:\link\files

I want C:\link\empty folder to always point to the target C:\link\files, sounds simple but I'm not well versed at doing this sort of thing..

A:Symbolic folder linking

Easy
Run Command Prompt with Admin rights

Issue the command
Mklink /j "c:/folder/files" "c:/folder/empty"

The option /j will create the link although some swear by using option /d. I'm not sure the differences but /j works for me.

I can't think of a way, but can I ask why you want to do this? The method others I know use when they don't want other looking through certain files is set the folder to be hidden, the change folder settings to show hidden files and folders when you need access to the files. Once they are done, the set the options back to not show hidden folders.

Hi I have been having trouble with my folders becoming unable to open up for example I have a large folder containing many pdf. files it is about 700 megs I can open the main folder see all the files in there but when I try to open any of the pdf. files it locks up. I can minimize the folder but I can't close it or do anything else with it, the only way to shut it down is with the task manager. This is also happening when I try to access files from my dvd drive if I go through Start--> Computer--> E: Drive I can see the files listed I just can't open them or then close it without using the task manager. This is on Vista SP1. Oh and also when those files lock up my pc works fine as best as I can tell My cpu usage and ram usage are normal.

I have a network drive which I have marked as "Make Available Offline" and are syncronized. When I disconnect my laptop from the network, open my shortcut to "Offline Files Folder" and select any document, I get a message similar to the following:

This file could not be found.
Try one or more of the following:
* Check the spelling of the name of the document.
* Try a different file name.
(\\Server\...\Test Document.doc)

I know the file exists, and it is available once I reconnect to the network.

I have 2 computers on a peer-to-peer network that use offline folders. I had to change the network-id on both computers and I had to change the name of the computer that the files are sync'd to.
So now when the computer trys to sync, it's trying to sync to the wrong computer name. (has the wrong path now). It use to sync to '\\PC-A\folder\'. But now the PC name is PC-B. So how do I change it to look for '\\PC-B\folder\' instead of '\\PC-A\folder\'

How can I fix this? Do I have to redo the whole process? Or is there a way to just go in and change the computer name in the path so it connects to the right location.

There are allot of files involved. I would hate to have to set it up all over again as it would be a big and long process.
Thanks for any help!

Hello!

I have checked the list of all shared folders in my desktop, (in Computer Management/Shared Folders/Shares). But if I trying to disable sharing this folders (E.g. C:\Windows, Disk drives (C,D,E,G:\)) in their properties, they sharing is already disabled as checkbox is not marked. So why this folders, disk drives are still marked as shared in Shares tab. Is there are any way to fully restrict sharing of all of this folders (i.e. fully restrict and disable any sharing activity) and disk drives? And for what IPC$ (Remote IPC) folder is used(since there is no any path to it)? Thanks in advance for your reply!

Hello Inate8
Check the ACL of the parent folder and make sure that permissions are set to replace permissions on child objects. Also make sure that you are the owner of the folder and have full control permissions. Also make sure NETWORK is added to the ACL of the parent folder and give whichever permissions you wish.

If you need a screenshot just ask

So I wanted to transfer my X-Com savegame files from my laptop to my desktop. This were located within the documents and settings folder. Which was locked for no bloody reason. And when I tried to restore permission, I got access denied there as well. I ultimately had to remove the users under the folder properties and add them back just to get Windows to do what it is supposed to do in the first place. I encountered the problem a second time with another folder within the My Documents and had to go about fixing it the same way.

What is the original cause of this problem? How do the folders get locked to begin with? Is it some unwanted feature of Windows, or is it caused by malicious software?

Thanks for the information.

I had a large music library in a folder called music.

I installed itunes, and it decided to re-organize all of my files... So now i have 1,111 (that's right one-thousand one-hundred and eleven) sub-folders in the music folder, each containing a number of sub folders, and each sub folder has only one of two music files in it....

I would be laughing hysterically if there was simply an undo button, but there isn't.

It could literally take six months to manually go to the bottom of each folder tree, pull the one song, past it in the root folder, and then delete the folder it came from, over 8,000 for each of the files in my library.

So the question is: is there some utility i can use to pull all of the files at once, and then delete all of the folders left behind?

thanks,

nick

Hi, [email protected], and welcome to the forums.

First, some advice - ***Never use your email address as your username(s) at forums***

Forums are publicly viewable, and Google, Yahoo and other search engines, as well as Malware authors, continually troll around for email address to add to their list to try to start spamming you.

I've already reported this to the admins and they should be contacting you shortly (I hope).

Anyway, to answer your question, Have you tried ZIPping the files up so you can attach them? Windows Vista has native ability to both extract and compress archives - meaning you can get files out of and put files into archives.

Now, before we go further, let me tell you that archive is a term that is used rather loosely here, so don't think if this as a treasure trove of ancient documents and artifacts only. Originally the purpose of archiving was just that - to archive material that you did not need ready access to, in a compressed format that allowed you to store more items in less space than you can when storing the same items in their original format. Hence, the term archive has held over, although a better description would probably be compressed container.

Now, on to how to do it.

To archive a file (without installing any 3rd party tools) do the following:
Select the file(s) that you want to archive in Windows explorer Right click one of the file *while all are selected* and select Compressed (zipped) Folder

Now, in Windows Explorer you'll see a new file called {filename}.ZIP, where {Filename} is the name of the file that you right clicked on. The {filename} part will be highlighted, allowing you to rename the file.

Once you have done that, you simply follow the forum rules at FS-MP.com in order to upload your files.

Is there a way to link two files together so that if one gets deleted so will the other. And if so can it be done with VBS.

A:Linking Files

That may be undesirable - for example, what if you delete a file accidentally and also empty the recycle bin?

I have a guaranteed fix. Go out and buy the game instead of pirating it.

Could someone please explain why subfolders do not synchronize when that option is selected when making a folder available for off line use? The folders that I mention were created after I made the main folder available for off line.

Also can't discern a pattern for the indicators on synchronized folders that you see in win explorer. Is there a "key"? Sometimes yellow, blue, red...I have even seen green, I think.

Much obliged!

At my job I have this one woman whose computer started acting strangely this morning.

She cannot connect to one specific network drive for more than a few minutes at a time before it boots her out and puts her in 'work offline' mode.

She can synchronize the folders to get another few minutes out of it, but is having a hard time getting any real work done because of this.

Internet and email (email is on the same server as the network drive) still work without an issue.

At first I thought this may be internet explorer's 'work offline' issue, but when none of those fixes worked, I posted here.

She is the only one in the office with this issue, so I don't think it's a problem on the server side.

Any help is appreciated,
Thank you in advance.
