Info/suggestions on build? i3?

Q: Info/suggestions on build? i3?

Hi, this is my first post on techspot, and I am kind of a newbie on building pc. I have never done it and been looking up everything I can. My needs are just basically normal computing but I want to be able to play new games (shadow of mordor). I dont do any video editing or anything. I have been reading that an i3 will be fine and I need a good gpu instead of overkill on a cpu. I also want a good mobo that has plenty of potential (something about more ports???). I just need to be steered in the right direction of what to get without blowing out the budget. I dont play too many games (and no fps and very few online). I just dont want to see a new game in 6 months that I want and dont have minimum sys requirements. Also I was very skeptical about getting an AMD cpu instead because they get so much hotter, but I know alot of people will recomend it. Sorry for being so longwinded.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi BraidedDuke5,
Have you thought of going down the used parts path as you seem to be wanting a machine "cheap" with an i3 instead of looking at what kind of job you really want it to do, unless you will only be playing games in a really low resolution (fps). E.g. the Intel NUC and the ASUS Vivo have Core i3 CPU and they are nothing like a gaming PC.
Here is a couple of pros for a Core i5, and they are;
"Intel Turbo Boost":- Which lets the processor increase its clockspeed whenever the workload on the CPU increases and none of the Core i3 CPUs have Turbo Boost.
"Cache":- The i3 (Ivy Bridge) processors have 3MB (except 4 Clarkdale processors which have 4MB) of cache all the Core i5s (except 4 Ivy Bridge processors which have 3MB and 6 Clarkedale which have 4MB), have 6MB of cache. The cache is like RAM for the processor but it is built into the processor chip. So this gives it (the CPU) access to the memory storage a lot quicker. Without a CPU memory cache and RAM the CPU would need to access the HDD which would be even slower.

Searched eBay.com.au for "i5 cpu" in "Computer components and parts" and had a myriad of choices.

You really need to decide on the CPU first then mobo and then components (small SSD for the O/S, graphics card and RAM) and lastly a PSU to power all your choices (you could even bung a cheap PSU in just to get the rig going, so long as you realise that it WILL fail down the line!)

Hope this helps

Edit:- Changed CPU listings to be accurate for world-wide purchasing as some markets did not get some CPU incarnations released as a new product (based entirely on the Ivy Bridge and Clarkdale Core i3 / i5)

A:Suggestions for a new build

Rule No. 1. No brand new motherboard or video graphics card is worth the stress and the downtime ... the quality control is never as good as it should be.

Look for real results. Do you have solid reasons why you want the 140W cpu based upon your own experience?
Same question applies to the water cooled units. Do you really want to put up with the trouble they cause, when so many have gone back to air cooled?
If your decisions are based upon your own experience and that of your friends, there is no arguement, but try to avoid going on what you have read in a magazine or on-line, because nearly everything is sales fluff.
In my opinion, the power supply and memory are two of the most important creatures in your case, and you didn't even mention them?

Mainly, you make it sound like your mind is made up, and you are simply hunting others who will agree with you... but $300 might not be enough for the right motherboard... I would plan on $330 or so... don't forget shipping.

The seller who is easy to return components is better than the price anyway.

Which board is best? Three is no "BEST" just a lot of opinions so talk to users who play what you play.

I have $6000 to spend on a new build and just wanted to get opinions on what Mobo and what CPU to get.
I am going to be doing some hardcore gaming so this machine is basically for gaming and not much else.
I prefer AMD CPU's.
I would like to have dual Graphics cards as well. Was thinking about EVGA's 512 GeForce 6800 ultras PCI-E of course. (X2)
I like alot of RAM too. Not going to be doing any OC'ing.
Just some suggestions would help.

Thanks

Need suggestions system i doubt i can just buy a new retail motherboard and make it work I m not even sure if Dell themselves will sell me a new motherboard and frankly i m completely tired of problems with this thing i ll never buy another dell So with that in mind i was thinking about building a new computer I know a guy who has built several and will help me My main concern is that i want to keep Office If i keep my current hard drive can i keep my current windows office The computer will be used for school and games I play CS and WoW I want to be able to able to play wow on mostly max settings flawlessly which this current system does until it died today For budget i d like to stay at or below a grand after i completely upgrade this summer I will keep my monitor and everything so the grand is just the computer itself I m expecting to pay - for a new motherboard and processor if i can get away with just buying those at the moment Not sure about AMD vs Intel What do you think i should do with this situation Feel free to give me some build suggestion as well nbsp

A:Need a new MB, or build a new PC. Need suggestions

your best bet if the motherboard is bad (it likely is anytime I had a computer with those symptoms it ended up being a bad motherboard) is likely to salvage most of the parts from the dell (everything except the motherboard, case, and psu) Get a new motherboard (socket 775 supporting core2duo, intel P43 or P45 chipset recomended), a new case (dell cases have a propriatary front pannel connector that will not work with most retail boards and many of their cases use mATX formfactor which limits board options aswell, New power supply (dell tends to use cheap psus [the last dell I opened was an insperon 530 and it had the same piece of crap 300w bestec psu e-machines used to use] and it is not worth risking your new board to a shoddy psu), Also a new cpu cooler if you reuse your current CPU (again the dell ones tend to use proprietary mounts and/or ducting.)

Here are some quick recomendations:
Motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128372
$99(good board, good manufacture, decent expansion capibility)
(or if you want a few more features as well as future DDR3 support)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128364
$120 (I currently have this board in my primary desktop)
Case:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119068
$50 (these are cheap, solid, and highly configurable)
PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703005
$100, $85 after rebate (this should handle any single video card rig fine)
CPU cooler:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835101026
$30 (this should keep the cpu nice and cool)

If dell actually sent you an OS disc with your system (It will say Dell on the disc and then something like "operateing system; already installed on your computer) you can use it to preform a repair install after the new motherboard is installed allowing you to keep your programs and files intact [you will need to reactivate windows due to the hardware change so make sure to peel the licence off the old dell tower and keep it handy when windows prompts.]) If you did not recieve a seperate os disc you will likely need to purchase a new copy of windows.

The whole build should run less than $300 (if you don't need a new copy of windows and recycle all other parts)

Your cpu is likely ok but if you want/need to replace it that will add another $160 or so for a core2duo (e8400) that is a little better than your current set up (the cheapest core2duo is $120) AMD cpu's are cheaper but are generally lower preformance than intel chips. And of course AMD cpu's use a different socket which requires a different motherboard than the ones I listed.

Almost forgot; did you try removing the expansion cards one by one (video and any PCI cards) sometimes a bad or poorly seated (loose connection) card can cause a computer to fail to boot.

A:Suggestions for build

Power supply is mostly likely junk. Get a better unit. Generally most Rosewill hardware should be avoided as it can be anywhere from junk to good but you're never sure, but most of it falls into the cheap category.

Also, BIOSTAR isn't one of the better manufacturers, not sure what BIOS is required to support that processor they just list it as compatible. You may want to look at an Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, or AsRock baord instead, here's one that lists that processor as supported by the original BIOS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157331
It's also cheaper, better, and has better support to boot.

Trinity APUs also love fast memory, especially for the integrated GPU. Move up to 1866Mhz DDR3 and save a dollar: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148499

Here's a Thermaltake case with a 430 watt PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133185
It's nothing special in term of case or the power supply, but I'd trust it more than a Rosewill unit.

Hi,

i would like you to help me upgrade system to the below configuration.. i m planning to buy the following components...

i3 540 (processor) ----------------------------------- 7250/-
DH55 (motherboard) -------------------------------- 5500/- (TC or HC not sure. "not happy")
ATI HD 5750 (DDR3 graphics card) ----------- 8600/-
2 GB (DDR3 transcend RAM) ------------------- 3050/-
(prices are in Indian rupee)

please suggest a motherboard alternative to DH55 in that price range only.. i researched about P6T, X58, but those aren't available in my hometown..

your help would be appreciated... thank you...

A:Suggestions on new build?

The i3 540 will anyway not work on an X58 chipset based ASUS P6T motherboard. The X58 is based on the LGA 1336 socket whereas the i3 runs on LGA 1156.

I think this board should do fine with your CPU at your price point.

I will be checking back after 2-3 days hope to get a reply.

A:Suggestions For My PC build

Hi and welcome to TSG. Some thoughts from me below:

- Xeon processors are really for servers, not desktops, I would go for an 4690k or similar dependant on budget.
- Personally, for an NVidia card I wouldn't go for anything less than an x60 card (760, 860 etc), its the last two digits that are the important ones from a gaming performance perspective.
- WD Black are better HDDs, better quality and reliability.

Raid 0 will give you faster response times,
Just remember raid 0 has no redundancy, if a drive should fail you have lost all your data.

Howdy,

I've been in the process of building a new PC for myself that can handle my appreciation for video games as well as handle photo and video editing. I was wondering if any of you more experienced techies can toss me some build suggestions. I'm trying to keep it under $1500. I was looking at liquid cooling units, any opinions on those as well would be helpful.

Any and all help / information is greatly appreciated.

Ok, i wanna build a laptop, a gamer one, but i dont know which of the millions of combinations can be the best, or what brands are better. Can anybody give me any suggestions of what parts are better, or maybe a good combination?
My requirements are:
-ssd
-17inches
-good cooler (i hate it when it starts to burn and it slows down)
-can play the latest games
About the budget, i have some money... but i dont need a luxury. I just want something useful.
Thank you very much.

A:build laptop, need suggestions

its unusual to build a laptop - do you know where you can get all the parts to build yourself ?
unlike a desktop which is easily available

Your Case, Motherboard, Hard drive, and PSU look good. Look at this CPU.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115016

For your RAM look at Corsair or some A-Data ( that is what I have in mine, pretty good). There is other RAM options but those I know are pretty good RAM. I would defintly use your existing Graphics card.
If I was you I would look at some AMD compatible motherboards, it makes the build a whole lot cheaper. The AMD CPU's are cheaper then intel. I got a 2.4 dual core 4600+ for $115. I would deffintly stick to ASUS motherboards mine so far is done pretty good for me(its a couple of months old, my first build also). Ive read also that they are supposed to be the best for overclocking. Good luck on the build.

Hi Everyone I have Computer For Build-Up Need Suggestions a desktop computer Need Suggestions For Computer Build-Up with the first generation Intel I CPU that is getting long Need Suggestions For Computer Build-Up in the tooth and I am looking around to replace it however I am on a bit of a tight budget I do a lot of video streaming off the internet Netflix etc plus I use Adobe Photoshop to work with large image files and I also use Adobe Premier to do video rendering In my price range I know I am going to get integrated video and for the short term I can be OK with that since I will be putting in a dual head video card to use dual monitors The new Intel I computers appear to be a little over my budget and what I am hearing about the Intel I CPU s they seem to be a little blaise and pedestrian so I am looking at the AMD CPU s I don t think the A will meet my needs so that leaves the A A A and FX From what I understand the A A and A are similar quad core CPU s but AMD puts multiple cores into the video And then there is always the AMD FX CPU but I know the FX has been around forever If I get an FX CPU it will definitely be the bit variety My budget is in the to range plus approx for an OS and I am looking at bare bones kits to get me up and running and them I will add on as I go and as I have the need I am interested in any opinions that anyone would like to share with me and please keep it simple Thanks nbsp

A:Need Suggestions For Computer Build-Up

$300 isn't a lot for a CPU and motherboard.

What exact model of i5 do you have now? You want to be sure to not step down to lower performance processor or only get something that's similar or slightly better when you're spending that much money.

The desktop i5's are either dual core or quad core(thanks Intel), but all i3 models are dual core with most supporting HyperThreading for two additional threads but that doesn't bring them up to true 4 core models.

Modern Intel processors can support up to three monitors as do most quality motherboards. You could get better Adobe Premier performance from a nVidia or AMD GPU though if you use GPU acceleration but even Intel GPU's support some GPU acceleration these days with Adobe products.

Personally I wouldn't look at AMD, for most tasks Intel is the way to go these days. The FX models are the best if you do want an AMD though and the A models are for cheap systems.

All modern Intel and AMD CPU's are 64-bit capable.

I am planning a new build. This is going to take a while since I can only afford one major piece at a time, but I should like a decent set up which is vaguely "future proof".

I was thinking of basing this around the AMD (Venice) Athlon 64 3500+ 939 (unless anyone has any other suggestions!) I have about £140 (US$ 280) to spend on the CPU.

My main question is about a suitable mobo. Similar amount of cash to splash on that, and I was looking at the Abit Fatal1ty.

I don't do much gaming, but I should like the build to be "able".

Any suggestions would, as always, be gratefully received!

Why exactly do you choose the i7-2600? AFAIK the i7-2600k is just about the same price. Not only that but if this is a gaming system, a 2500k would be fine.
I like other graphics cards, but that's not to say the one you picked is bad.

A:Budget AMD build need some suggestions

You need a good...but not great mobo and a great cpu. After you get your motherboard you will need to be sure that your pre selected ram will be compatible. It's better to get your motherboard and cpu bundle, then select the best ram for the job. Luckily, Corsair has a good compatibility to product ratio. I had to trade back OCZ revision 2 for Corsair. My Corsair (4x1gig) has 4-4-4-12- latency numbers @ 400 mhz. I only go 5-5-5-18 when over clocking. You will get a lot of opinions about your choices...I say 'use what I use'. ASUS P5N-E SLI mobo and an INTEL cpu. E6750 is a good buy. It's around $200...=2.66...can O'C well. The ASUS is about $120. Don't forget a PSU and a Video processor.

A:New build upgrade. Suggestions?

My desktop is almost completely identical to your build and I can say that it works great with all my games/programs thus far.

The only differences are that I have the Cooler Master HAF 932 Case, Corsair Vengance RAM and an AMD Radeon HD 6870.

The only thing I'd suggest/question is a different CPU. I'm curious as to why you didn't pick a Sandy Bridge CPU, or at least why the i7 950.

Personally, if I could go back and rebuild my computer I'd have definitely changed the CPU to something else (didn't know too much back then + Sandy Bridge weren't out yet, and I wasn't willing to wait XD). Considering the i7 950 doesn't use the Turbo Boost as well as say the i7-875k, nor does it tend to be a favourite for gaming. Although that depends... what are you using the computer for?

Just a thought, hope any of my comments help!

Hi

I am looking to build a new PC as I think mine has seen better days

I want it for internet, gaming and Autocad

I live in the UK and was hoping to spend about £300-350

Is it possible to get a decent spec for this price?

Also I have never built a PC before and any tips would be appreciated

A:New computer build, suggestions

No, you'd need at least double that budget for something that is good for AutoCAD, since AutoCAD is very demanding of the CPU and graphics card. Also, a gaming graphics card will not necessarily be suitable for AutoCAD as per my experience. Other members may be able to give you better advice though, so stick around for some time.

Hi guys,

I've just put together the price for my potential new PC build. It comes in at just below £1500.. I need to know if I'm getting the best for my money!

Any comments or suggestions? I'd appreciate any advice!

Here Goes.

Motherboard: EVGA 122-CK-NF68-A1 NF680i SLI
PSU: 730W HiperPower Type-R Modular II, Quad-SLI
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme QX6850 ( HSF: Scythe Mugen (Infinity) )
RAM: 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400: 5-5-5-18
GFX: 768MB ScanFX 8800GTX
HDD: 500 GB Samsung HD501LJ Spinpoint T166 SATA
DVDRW: LG 18x GSA-H66NBAL DVD±R, 10x DVD±DL, DVD+RW x8/-RW x6, DVD-RAM x12, SATA
OS: Windows Vista 64-bit

I'm also contemplating putting another 8800GTX in there next month to run on SLI, and another 4gb memory to take it up to 8gb.

Any advice? This is just second build! I'm planning on doing some over clocking too.

A:First Gaming Rig Build, need suggestions

Spend the highest percentage of your money on the motherboard and CPU. After that it's the Video Card(s), memory, hard drive(s), then CD/DVD burners. Go with a good 3rd party CPU cooler. Get the highest speed memory the motherboard supports. Check these specs carefully. Keep the case fans to minimum. 1 fan blowing in from front. One on hard drive cage, and 1 in the back case pulling air out. Arctic Silver 5 or 6 will be fine... Don't use too much

I also dabble in music production as a hobby so I also might do a dual OS install so I can use XP with my music production software (way more stable). Other than that it will be used for typical uses and software i.e.: MS Office, Multitaksing, maintaining a website (I need dual dvi monitor support) etc.. I am pretty mindset on the Intel i5 2500 or 2500k and am leaning towards the ASRock Z68 Extreme 3 Gen 3 LGA ATX board. I'd like to complete the build for around $600-800 (price is without monitor and other peripherals) if possible. I told myself I will never buy a box store computer ever again. What are your opinions on what I should do/buy next? I am in no hurry to complete this build and I know some hardware might be had on the cheap around the holidays. How about those:

CPU

HDD

Memory

Motherboard

Power Supply

DVD Drive

Video Card

All that $827.94. Didn't count your Antec 300 and rebates though! Of course, this list is for reference only and you should try to tweak it to match your budget. This is just to give you an idea of what you should be aiming for. There are a ton of review here at TS, read 'em and purchase the best.

If you ain't in a hurry to build, I'd wait until next year because prices will really fall and I believe intel will be introducing some better CPUs.

A:New build/upgrades suggestions

As an upgrade, you still have a few options using the core components.
Firstly, a PCI-E3.0 motherboard isn't necessary- you're only going to notice a difference between 2.0 and 3.0 using a heavily bandwidth constrained card -likely a dual GPU (GTX 690, HD 6990, HD 7990). What might be of more interest is SATA 6GB or USB 3.0 depending on what kind of upgraded storage options you're looking at, if any.
For a budget upgrade I'd maybe recommend swapping out the C2D for a C2Quad (QX9450/Q9500/Q9505/Q9550/Q or QX9650), adding the HD 7870 -a solid choice, and maybe an SSD if you use any productivity apps. The quad (esp. a 12MB cache version) will still give you a reasonable performance lift -more so if you can OC to the 3.6-3.8GHz range.

If you're looking at transitioning to Ivy Bridge, then work out a budget all the core components (CPU, board and RAM), graphics card. You can reuse the CPU cooler, storage, chassis, PSU and peripherals, so they become only a secondary consideration.

I fully intend to OC the CPU/GPU. For this build, I intend to upgrade in about 12-18 months and reuse at least the power supply and case. These is also $80 worth of rebates to be redeemed on this build. So, if I get those, I can spend it on a SSD. Windows 7 Ultimate is student price.

Everything looks good to me. About the P67 labeling, you shouldn't concern yourself to much. The P67 label on RAM is more of a marketing scheme than anything. If you are highly worried about the quality of your RAM pick, you should purchase from the motherboard's quality Vendor list for RAM.

So it s finally time PC - Solved: suggestions 1st build to upgrade my year old laptop and I ve decided to build my own first time I just found this forum and after reading the guide to building your own system thought I d post the hardware I selected to see if I can get some feedback from some more experienced system builders I guess Solved: 1st PC build - suggestions first thing I should do is explain what I want from this system I wanted to build something affordable excluding a monitor I d Solved: 1st PC build - suggestions like it to perform fairly well as a gaming system I Solved: 1st PC build - suggestions figured I can upgrade some things later when I get a chance to save up a little more money So I suppose you could call it an upgradeable-budget-gaming pc Here are my specs and some thoughts behind them Case - Antec P B Didn t want to skimp on the case A cheap case would be like putting a V engine in a Geo Metro right Good reviews on Newegg and I liked the looks Processor - AMD Athlon X I found AMD processors mobos to be a little cheaper than C D processors mobos so I went with AMD even though C D generally outperforms the X s MoBo - MSI K A Platinum Admittedly I don t know a whole lot about motherboards Extra SATA for the possibility of a RAID config later was a must What really attracted me to this board was the ATI chipset and the possibility of doing a crossfire setup later Onboard audio seemed good enough to get me by until i can purchase a sound card HDD - Seagate RPM GB SATA drive Good capacity I know there s a lot of debate about it but Seagate seems to be one of the more reputable manufacturers Good price too I don t think I ever imagined being able to get GB of space for RAM - GB of Kingston DDR Dirt cheap and compatible with my Mobo Adding another GB stick will be my first upgrade after getting this PC up and running Plan on going to DDR sometime in the future as well Video Card - ATI x Another area where I really need some help As far as the DirectX cards go NVIDIA seems to have the lead but I don t think I m going to go for DX yet since I plan on running WinXP on this system anyway From what I ve read ATI s latest generation cards excluding the DX s outperform NVIDIA s Not to mention they re a little cheaper Newegg has a Sapphire X GT MB for after rebate right now which is looking pretty attractive to me I m tempted to splurge for an x PRO or XT though especially one with MB My mobo and psu give me the chance to add another video card in a crossfire setup at a later time though which has me leaning towards purchasing a cheaper card now and probably adding another one a few months down the road Any thoughts Two x GT s MB will outperform a single x XT MB anyday right PSU - Corsair W SLI Crossfire ready Also liked the idea of a modular PSU The wattage ratings can be a little confusing because as I understand it there s really no standard that a manufacturer is required to follow when they rate their PSUs The reviews I ve seen on this PSU have been exceptional A little on the expensive side but it fits what I need and I ve read about the importance of staying away from a cheap PSU OS - WindowsXP Pro My only question here is should I save money and buy the OEM version instead of the retail version It s significantly cheaper but I m concerned about future issues What are the limitations of going with the OEM version vs the retail version DVD Burner - Haven t really settled on one yet but looking for IDE interface and a good price and that s about it I ll probably just go with the best deal on a name brand drive that Newegg happens to be having that day Speakers - I ll probably end up with the Logitech X- for now is all I have room for at the moment anyway Sound Card - None at first but a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer when I can afford it Extras that I m not too sure about -Some Arctic Silver The comes with thermal compound already applied and from what I ve read it stays pretty cool with the stock coole... I’m hoping to spend around $1800 with a monitor and other accessories, which I’ll have in a month so hopefully some prices will go down a little by then. I need this PC for Dynagen (a very CPU intensive Cisco router emulator), gaming , and encoding HD video. I’m not sure about my processor choice because I have always built computers using AMD but I’ve heard better things about the new Intel processors. Any suggestions?

One potentially major problem with your system.

Aspire may make some nice cases, but the power supplies they put in the cases are known to be complete pieces of (let's see, how can I word this without being censored)... dung.

Highly recommended that you either get a case with no PSU in it, and buy a quality PSU to put in, or to buy that case you list above, take out that dung box, and replace it with something that is not going to cause random crashes on your computer.

A:My 1st Build - Need Suggestions & new to TechSpot

Personally I would go with the AMD build. I have the second motherboard you chose there and I can say that it works great. The first one is pretty much just like the second except it got the wireless. Always I plus I suppose.
I got some of the A-Data memory also but ended up getting some better ones later.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227139

I have these, very nice. Definitely go with 2 gigs.
You will not need the heatsink and fan because the CPU already comes with it, which will suit you just fine if you don't plan to overclock very much. Also it voids the warrenty if you use a different heatsink and fan than what comes with the CPU. Very nice choice of CPU btw. Hard drive looks good. I will let someone else help you with your PSU. In my signature though there is a link to a website that lists the good and bad PSUs. As for the graphics card I would go for the 8600GT or GTS. I don't know how much you game but this card can play most games that are out. Cases are user preference. Just get something that you like and has lots of fans.

A:Brand New Build, Suggestions Welcome

Just a few comments from a retired computer builder.

SATA2 is mandatory for any new system today, but why RAID?
That's a killer if it goes sour on you.

I was given a Dell XPS 400 that Dell wrote off as "Broken and beyond repair" just because the two-drive RAID system was corrupted.
I reprogrammed it to operate on single drives and set up Vista Ultimate on the little PC.
I doubled the original 1 gig of ram and Vista is running satisfactorily on the PC today.

Over the years I've tried a RAID setup on several occasions and every time I've torn it down and gone back to a single drive for my OS. For the home computer user there is NO advantage to using RAID, except to tie up more drives to do the same job.

With so many drives and all that ram, you're going to have one heck of a heat problem. And, you can't stack those drives or the bottom ones will roast the top ones.
Also the current draw on the PSU will be considerable. A 750w supply won't produce that much power 'all day' so I'd want to go higher yet on the PSU.

You're also going to want to increase cooling as much as possible.
I'm currently running five case fans in my own system to bring in fresh air and to exhaust the heat from my three HD's and 3 gig's of ram. I had to do some cutting and drilling to get that many fans installed.
Every one of my three HD's has its own Two-Fan cooler and I've added a larger cooling fan to my 128meg Video card.

Also, Video cards today, generate a LOT of heat, that must be removed from the case.
It appears that you're setting yourself up for a "Furnace" of Mt St Helen's proportions!

If you actually build that system as you've said, it should make a nice heater for your computer room this winter!

I work very hard for my money and I'd not want to waste it by adding more ram and more HD's than really necessary.

Vista Ultimate runs beautifully on my computer with an AMD 3800+ dual core CPU and three gigs of DDR2 ram.

By the way, you couldn't run fast enough to GIVE me any Kingston ram.
I work with a professional ram seller who tells me that Kingston ram is about 85% refurbished ram that's actually FAILED the original manufacturers final testing.

Good Luck!

I will not be the only one to advise you thusly: read this article/list concerning PSU's.
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=792566.

Also, there are many quality combo DVD R RW CD R RW's out there. Might save some money and a drive bay. Also- I have read some not too good things about Sony optical drives and support lately. Can't remember where, but it was recent. I've never owned one, just for what it's worth.

Ok, so I have built a PC before, but it was over 10 years ago and since then, I'm kind of out of the loop. I'm looking to build a new PC now and have picked everything out. Was wondering what you guys think, and what you would suggest. I am lost on some things.

I mainly want it for casual use, photoshopping, video editing and some gaming maybe. I tried to research everything before choosing but a lot of it is still over my head. Example, the Vishera, Haswell, Zambebi stuff on the CPUs. It isn't the brand, what is it and how do I know which is better?

Anyway, here is what I have. Feel free to tell me I have no idea what I'm doing. 😃

Perfection is unattainable. Shoot for reliability.

Good choice on Corsair power supply. The Cooler Master case is ok, but the power switches fail too often. DVD drives are fine. Western Digital Black or the equivalent Seagate are excellent choices. I don't know the motherboard, but I am partial to Gigabyte.
I suspect you will be very happy with what you have selected. Just be sure you get a warranty for the case, as there is no replacement power switch if that one fails.

I am looking to build a new system inexpensively. A new motherboard that would be compatible with a DVD burner and CD burner I have in my computer now. I guess that would boil it down to getting a new tower, motherboard and ram (still running on SDR). Right now I have a Pentium 4 CPU with 1.6G, 768 MB of Ram.

We like to listen to music and do some gaming, but it does seem like things are lagging. Lately, my computer has been shutting off when we exit out of certain games. It sounds like the power supply is struggling, it just seems like it's time to upgrade.

Any suggestions would be great! I'm not quiet sure what to do or where to start.

As for "best bang for the buck" you should do well with this system... though I like the Seagate drives for their longer warranty.

OK, the new build is progressing as in terms of parts. I have an Athlon 64 Venice, and A8N-SLI Deluxe mobo. Thoughts are now on which graphics card. I have thought about:

Gainward 6600 GT 256 MB ULTRA
XFX Geforce 6800XTreme Edition 256mb

Thing is, there are loads out there, but most of the PCI versions only seem to come at 128mb.

Any comments/suggestions/additions would be very welcome. I tend to prefer nVidia over Radeon, but am open to advice! I have around £100 ($200 US) to spare.

Thanks chaps!

Oh yeah, got a Tsunami Dream case donated by a very kind bro!

A:New Build: suggestions for graphics card

The 6800GS and the 6800GT (PCIe versions) are sitting in about your price range I believe. The GS tends to have a better price tag, and about the same performance.

Hi I m Time Build Suggestions? Computer and Help First - building a PC in a few months and was wondering if the following would run First Time Computer Build - Help and Suggestions? fine or if i m even First Time Computer Build - Help and Suggestions? heading in the right direction I m not quite certain if the PSU is enough I m looking for this PC to play the latest games with ease ie Assassins Creed Bioshock Black and White etc and hold the ability for heavy multi-tasking XD as well as run Vista Basically an all-in-all good PC Here s what i ve planned out Note I ve tried to keep this as cheap as possible Australian Dollars without taking away too much from performance Though i suspect prices will fall over the next three months so i m open for suggestions for more expensive parts MOBO Gigabyte GA- P-S RAM Corsair Value Select GB x CPU Intel Quad Core Q VIDEO MB Gigabyte Nvidia GeForce GTS OPTICAL Asus x Lightscribe DVD Burner HD Seagate GB DISPLAY Dell quot Widescreen CASE Option - Thermaltake Soprano Black with W PSU Option - Thermaltake Soprano DX Black without PSU PSU I think that s about it for now Thanks in advance nbsp

A:First Time Computer Build - Help and Suggestions?

Use this Power Supply Calculator
It will give you an estimate of your required wattage.
I would recommend a PSU around the 600W range. Just to make your system open to newer upgrades.
PSU brands are really important in terms of reliability. Good PSU manufacturers include Antec, Thermaltake, Cooler Master, Seasonic, FSP, Enermax.

Your motherboard is a bit on the low side, especially since you are using it with the mighty Q6600.
First of all, you should not get the P965 chipset anymore, because it's being replaced by the newer one, the P35 chipset.
One excellent Gigabyte P35 mainstream board is the GA-P35-DS3R (the famous GA-P965-DS3 was its predecessor).

For the RAM, 2x1GB is a good amount, but you need to stay away from the Value series (it's for people who are on a really tight budget).
The Corsair XMS2 series is great mid/high-end RAM and would be perfect.
You should get regular DDR2 RAM (800MHz is enough). Get a 2GB dual channel kit and make sure the sticks have 4-4-4 timings.
Example:
Corsair XMS2 2x1GB DDR2-800MHz PC2-6400 (4-4-4-12)
Try to find the same one at the place you shop at.

For the video card, the 8600GTS doesn't exactly justify its price. It performs barely any better than the 8600GT, yet it costs $60-$100 more.
I would recommend that you either push your budget and get an 8800GTS-320MB (entry-level high-end card), or get the XFX 8600GT XXX-Edition (an overclocked 8600GT, more value for the money than the 8600GTS).

Hope this helps...I spent quite a while typing it

There is only two things I think could be made better in Windows 7..

So Far..Defragment needs a link to logs or/and colour display of fragments..
Windows 7 Experience - I get 5.9 slowest on HDD and RAM - I'd like to see a link that could show me/others what couldn't be run on my config, therefore showing me the need to update and Possibly what I to update..?
I Believe with my score I should pretty much be able to run anything..
which is why i built such a computer, but as time goes by there will be something eventually I need to upgrade for.

Other than that, Its been so far so good...

A:Windows 7 RC Build 7100 Suggestions

hi bloke28, and welcome to the forums!

as you say, you have a good system and shouldn't have any problems running any software, although i'm a bit surprised by your memory score - try running the test again with no apps running in the background.

a lot of people get 5.9 for their drives, it doesn't seem to matter if they have velociraptors or fancy raid setups, 5.9 is what they get.

it seems the only way to get higher scores is to buy an ultra-expensive (and oh so desirable) ssd drive.

i really hope the windows team rethink the wei in future updates/service packs - i'm not going to be pleased if my os won't let me play the latest super-duper game because it thinks i have a slow harddrive!

A:Gaming build looking for upgrade suggestions

I think you are on the right track for increasing gaming performance Blk, The 6950 scales beautifully. In most cases 80- 100%. The 600w PSU is going to be pushing it, a 750w is more in order and the HX series you listed is excellent. Your x 4 965 is not going to be a limiting factor at all. good luck with the upgrade

A:Advice & suggestions on first build under $3k budget

direct quote from member lehpron from the EVGA forums, sorry its huge but this sums up why I chose the type of mobo, GPU and CPU. but of course still subject to change

"Most modern games are threaded for between 2-4 cores, and it has been a slow progress adoption since quads have been around for six years, duals for eight years. meaning, a 6-core won't make a difference today. New games take 2-3 years to make from the ground up, so in that time, it will make a quad that much more important. Only get the 6-core for your professional work, not for gaming.

3770K is a 22nm quad and half the die area (thus half the actual power and thermals if set at the same frequency) as 32nm i7-3900's 6-cores; mathematically, they should overclock better, but Intel differed from tradition of soddering the CPU die to the IHS (integrated heat spreader) by using a thermal grease with Ivy Bridge which tends to artificially raise temperaturess. This prevents anyone from really being able to push it except for those using cryogenics; so in the end, all Sandy and Ivy processors reach a max of approx 5GHz regardless of number of cores.

So it all comes down to the board really; X79 can support up to 4-way SLI (in quad x8, or a pair of full x16) configs while Z77 is limited to just dual x8's. If you're serious about longitivity in terms of having the room for future graphics cards and not change the board (which definitely need more bandwidth than current), then X79 is the only option. For CPU, either get quad 3820 or 6-core 3930K depending on how often your professional uses need 12-threads or not.

BTW, as for the GTX670's, get the 4GB card. We'll soon see a new standard for mainstream monitors that used to be the reign of medicial professionals, their total single display res equals to a modern multi-display setup. So if you intend on at least one in the next two years and not upgrading graphics for it, then you should plan ahead with a 4GB model and get 3-way SLI by then to compensate.

TBGAPowa

Really looking for longevity and durability I chose a gtx 670 in hopes of being able to run graphic intensive art programs and gaming on high settings for at least two years before upgrade/new build.
This part will require an edit for realism.

In two years, a pair of GTX670 will have the performance equivalency of a future mainstream card (I.e. "GTS850" )and unable to run those games appearing then at high details without having the frame rates dip whatever is high-end at time. So either plan to get into 3-way or 4-way SLI (meaning you need to get a 4-way capable board in the first place, I.e. X79), think about upgrading your graphics card much earlier than two years, or settle for less visuals as times passes especially if you plan a higher resolution monitor someday. Most games are GPU-intensive, so if your resolution doubles the pixels, you cut your frame rates in half.

The only way you can truly have longivity is if your expectation is much lower than what is available for purchase. If you want max detail at smooth rates, then that is only possible today, it isn't possible next year with this year's configuration running next year's games. Just so you know, many folks on enthusiast websites like these upgrade often as a hobby, they choose to keep up with technology in order to maintain their preference level in every new game; I personally see it as a hassle. So you have to decide your upgrade tendencies beforehand and plan ahead, beyond this upcoming build. "

Title says it all.

Any info about how to do it, such as :

1. software needed
2. cooling need + how to fit it
(3. Possible 3D Mark score)

Also I have a Winfast Geforce 2 MX 100/200. Any similar info about clocking that would also be appreciated.

The computer that runs my TNT2 is a custom made PC. It has an Abit KT7A Raid, 256 MB of Ram and a 1200Mhz unclocked Thunderbird AMD. The card on it at the moment on gets a score of 700 in my 3D Mark tests.

The computer that runs on my Geforce 2 is a Dan computer with a Pentium 1.5 Ghz with 256 mb of ram and a new 845 chipset motherboard. This graphics card gets just under 1000 points at the moment in my 3D Mark tests.

Thanks for any info!

A:First build, can someone double check parts and or suggestions?

for those parts above a 650w power supply will be ample but i would firstly advice more then one stick of memory so it will be faster, if you buy 2 (or 4 or 8 ect) sticks of memory it will run in dual mode and if you buy 3 (or 6) it will run in tripple channel
Your graphics card isn't crossfire, it only says crossfire ready so when you buy a second one it will work in crossfire.

I would advice looking at intel socket 1155 instead of amd

Either buy a case without a pw supply and then purchase a decent one OR buy an antec case with a pw supply. What you have selected is what I call a junk unit. Really just think about it for a min or two. A decent 500W pw supply alone is going to cost you $50~75 or so. What kind of quality do you think you are going to get for $29 case and pw supply?

This is one item you do NOT want to go cheap. Here is an example of a quality pw supply for an average build.

Hi,

I would like to build a new pc but I haven't the time to do all the research that I did last time in order to put together a well-suited machine...so I thought I'd lean and glean here.

I am mainly building it to run Creative Suite for PS, ID and AI. Mirrored storage a must. I'm not sure who is winning the Intel vs AMD battle so enlighten me. Any and all suggestions welcome!

Also, can you recommend a good set-up for a new laptop for the same purpose as well?

I do not game at all...okay once in a blue moon...but not a necessity!

Thanks,

Timothy

Hi I'm building a unit from scratch and I am a little bewildered by the amount of motherboards out there...

I am really looking for a board that will stand me in good stead for a while, preferable Intel, (Core 2 Duo compatible).

I will only be running one Sata drive and one ATA 100, with a DVD writer, one PCI slot will be used and I need a floppy drive. Not an amazing amount of options needed...

I am undecided as to whether or not I will need SLI, i totally don't have enough money to buy two cards at the moment, but would it be good to have it as an option for later?

+ are there any makes I should stay away from?

Take it easy, one step at a time, keep kids away, watch for static, think before you act and then think again. If in doubt, build the whole thing outside the case and boot it up before fitting it for the final time.
When you have built hundreds of them you will wonder what all the fuss is about, but I remember the fear of the first build and all that cash just waiting to burn away!

With the new 10586 build something has changed where app suggestions remain in the Start Menu even after permanently removing the Windows store/Metro apps via DISM.

Besides taking the easy route and changing this setting in the Settings app (which, if used, will not persist after sysprep), are there any known registry hacks out there since such a setting doesn't exist in Group Policy as it should?

A:Random BSODs on new build. Lots of info available. HELP!

Three factors point at a probable hardware problem:

- The Prime95 results indicating unexpected hardware response.
- BSoDs on a clean install (invariably indicative of a hardware problem if it happens before additional software/drivers are added).
- Multiple stop 0x109s. Suggestive of a hardware issue.

To my way of thinking, you're at the stage where ripping out all non-essential hardware - as a test - is the next step.

A:Help! Info overload/new build/clean install

Hi Pat -

Here's what you need for UEFI install: UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 7 with - Windows 7 Forums

You can move the User folders to HD but first I would try setting up folders by the same name on the HD an simply linking them to the relevant Win7 library. This is much easier and still gets everything shown on the Docs, Pics, Music, Downloads, etc. explorer page. Library - Include a Folder - Windows 7 Forums

After trying that for awhile if you don't like it you can move the User folders to HD following these steps: User Folders - Change Default Location. This can be difficult process and even harder to change back which is why I gave the easier option for you to try first.

Hi guys,

first time poster, long time lurker. Very recently built a new system, and now experiencing BSOD, frustrating as i was super-happy with the build process. Unfortunately, i can't provide too much information as the pc even bsod's in safe-mode, and i can't get on long enough to get much info. Just managed to, hopefully, get the whole jcgriff2 thingy, attached here.

have reinstalled twice, and get the same BSOD soon after login, regardless of activity. as mentioned, i also get it in safe mode. My initial idea of culprits is mobo or SSD disk, but quite the novice here and very much asking for help. will update here with any info i can get, here's hoping

the BSOD message reads interrupt Exception Not handeled.

Hi in the future I am planning a computer build that hopes to run upon a UEFI-install of -bit Windows Looking into the specifications for Fast Boot and UEFI mode and all that jazz it says I need UEFI Option Roms for my GPU as well as a UEFI motherboard However I am confused as to the actual requirements for UEFI only mode or rather fast boot I guess are they the same or associated I currently use a D-Link PCI-e wireless adapter card on my computer due to a lack of internal network wiring between my room and the location of the router so moving the router is out of the question as well since its kept in someone's bedroom It's a small house I plan to reuse this card for my next computer however GPUs require a UEFI-supporting Build, for UEFI Mode a Future info? PCIe only Boot OpROM to support CSM off mode does CSM Off Mode and by extension secure boot prevent me from using my PCIe card cause I am not sure as to UEFI's effect on the wireless card

I've left everything untouched again, both the registry and the Windows Startup process and ran farbar recovery scan tool. I hope you can help me out, thanks.

This has happened a few times over the last several weeks. But it only happened after I had clicked on a picture from a google images search result though.
The first view times I was redirected to filestore72.info (the word 'download' was in the link but I do not remember it). And last night it happened again. I was redirected to ad.leadbolt.net and url123.info popped up as well. Again, this only happened after I clicked on a picture from a google images search result and it hasn't happened since.
I don't think it downloaded anything but I'm scared that it might have. What should I do?

A:Google search redirected (filestore72.info, url123.info)
