Preferred Solution: Any "Important" September Updates to Avoid ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
Why do we get the option "Windows Updates. Important updates are available. Go to PC settings to install them" on the logon screen? Need to remove this option but without altering the update functionality. We are using SCCM for windows update.
Can you help how to remove it by GPO or any other option for large scale systems (5000+). At present the user cannot install the updates as it has been restricted. Attached the screen shot also.

A:Any way to hide "you have hidden important updates" WGA nag banner in Windows Update?

Description of Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA)

It's pretty basic. The core of it is, they are a company that sells computer Operating System software and don't want to be ripped off. And to prevent rip-offs from updating beneficial security and other support they provide FREE, they require you run the WGA.

That isn't unreasonable.

Don't like it? Get Linux or whatever.

Hi Chris,
Try this for starters.

1. Close all the open windows.
2. Click the "Start" Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
3. Right-click "Command Prompt" and click "Run as administrator".
4. In "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type in " net stop WuAuServ " (without the quotes) and press Enter.
Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully stopped before you try to rename the folder.
5. Click the "Start" Button, in the "Start Search" box, type in " %windir% " (without the quotes) and press Enter.
6. In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".
7. Right-click on the folder, select "Rename" and type " Sdold " (without the quotes) to rename this folder.
8. Still in "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type the command " net start WuAuServ " (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the Windows Updates service.

Thanks Alex
I had already tried the steps in the post you linked.
In the end I have had to reinstall Windows 7 over the top (keeping all settings) and this has fixed the issue with Windows Updates.
It is frustrating that I could not find a solution as I do not like glossing over the issues without first finding a solution but unfortunately it was not my pc and time was against me.
Thanks for all the replies.

Hi,

I have several Updates that fail; 3 of which are classified as "Important." The updates get applied, I reboot, then after reaching 99%, I get the error message, "We would not complete your updates. Undoing changes."

KB2962409, 2967917, 2981580, and all versions for English Input Personalization Dictionary (e.g., 2881553) fail.

I connected with the Answer Desk and they told me to try the two-button reset (Volume Up + Power button) and then after reboot, try the updates again. Needless to say, I rolled my eyes, complied and, of course, it didn't work and I'm getting the same result.

The Answer Tech also told me that the 4 KBs I mentioned above will be pulled and replaced in a few days. I am skeptical but, regardless, I am still stuck with not being able to get those updates installed.

I'm running Windows 8.1 on a Surface Pro 2.

Any ideas? Thanks!

A:"Important" updates to install on vista?

Check Computer properties and make sure that it says you have SP2. That does sound like a lot of updates, but then there have been some almost every "Update Tuesday", so the number may vey well be quite high.

You may not want to download and install them all at one time, however. Pick a bunch and install, and then some more later. It's not likely that problems will arise, but if you have smaller batches, you'll have an easier time finding any that cause trouble.

Then, be smart. After you get it all set up, back it up. Your hard drive will fail, more infections will come along, and you'll be doing this all again if you are not prepared. Periodic updates to your backup will keep it recent and you can keep the first one as your "factory restore". You can even merge your restore partition with your main one for more space and make an image of that for your "factory restore". Since it will have all your programs, updates, and files, it will save you a lot of time for recovery.

Free drive backup software (imaging, cloning, and archiving - backups can be created on a second hard drive, internal or external, or on DVD's, or BluRay disks. One BluRay disk will hold most peoples' entire system drive's backup at 25 GB's using compressed images, 50 GB's double-layer):

Paragon Backup & Recovery 2012 (Recovery boot CD or USB key)
Macrium Reflect (Free)
O&O Disk Image Express or (mirror)
Easeus Todo Backup
ODIN (open-source)
Redo Backup & Recovery (Boot CD)
Clonezilla Live (A bootable CD of Debian with Clonezilla.)
Drive Image XML
PING (Partimage is not Ghost) (Boot CD with option Clam Antivirus)
Partition Saving
Clonezilla
Passmark OSFClone (Bootable, cloning only)

There are also many commercial products with more features.

Hi Looking for insight advice re KB According to Infoworld it was quot Optional quot in May but I was not offered it then This KB3054476 "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional" offered as week it was offered as quot Important quot and quot Recommended quot but only for one of my Win boxes I have read the MS KB article as well as THIS FORUM THREAD the latter of which includes a report of a BSOD due to this particular update However there isn't much out on the web about it And most of the discussion about it is overly technical for me And I am confused as to why it was previously offered as quot Optional quot but now is quot Important quot KB3054476 offered as "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional" or quot Recommended quot I don't think I quot need quot it as I have no webcam on this box And I don't like KB3054476 offered as "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional" to tempt fate by fixing things that are not broken So questions Is it safe to install Is it really necessary important Or would I be OK to hide it Thanks very much in advance

A:KB3054476 offered as "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional"

The status of updates changes with circumstances.
If an update isn't relevant, it won't be offered at all.
If however it's relevant but the related software is not apparently in use, it may be 'optional' - and gravitate to 'Recommended' or 'Important' if the related software is in use.
It can also be promoted through the hierarchy by MS depending on feedback through WU and error-trapped feedback.

If you have (and use) a webcam, then it's probably best to install the update.

So I have this weird thing happening in my relatively fresh install of Windows 10.
Whenever I search for "Check for Updates" or "Windows Update settings" on the search box of the start menu, I get the results that I want but if I press enter or try to click on those results nothing happens.. As far as I know I can click all others search results but those, and maybe others related to windows update.

I can still get updates by going to Settings>Update & Security though.

In my other computers this works fine, and as far as I can tell all the updates are done.
From what I've searched around other people seemed to have a similar issue where they couldn't acess the settings at all which isn't my case. Still I tried the sfc/ scannow that a lot of users seemed to recommend but no results.

When sfc /scannow is completed, it will give you one of the following 3 reports....................(paraphrasing)

1. No integrity violation.
2. Found corrupted files and repair is successful.
3. Found corrupted files but unable to repair some of them.

Hello @all!

Sorry for my English... I'll try to explain it as simple as possible.

We have a computer where only remote access is done. We do not use keyboard or screen on it because we don't need to access it locally.

We had a problem to which I am looking for a solution. After a short power loss the computer started automatically up again but showed the message where you might boot into safe mode... and, as it seems, there is no time out. So we had to change the computer to another place for pressing enter.

Is there any possibility to avoid this message or put a timer?

We are using Windows 7 64bit.

Thanks for any ideas!

Hi everybody,

I install and uninstall lots of software. For that reason I try to be very careful and always do it using special app called Ashampoo UnInstaller Platinum Suite. This program monitors and removes Windows applications completely. Using the installer module to add new applications makes the most sense as it creates a log file that will then be used by the uninstaller to remove every trace.

Everything was fine untill the day before yesterday when I cleaned the registry and as it seems made some mistakes. Now when Ashampoo UnInstaller scans the system before and after installation of a program I receive the following three system errors:

I can try to use Windows XP system restore but I would like to avoid it as I have just installed several applications.

Could anyone suggest any other way to repare the registry in order to avoid the mentioned error messages? What should I do?

Thanks in advance.

Whenever I open some Excel docs to have a look at the content table and want to close it afterwards WITHOUT CHANGING ANYTHING then Excel (2003/2007) asks me
if I want to save the changes.

I think Excel automatically re-calculates embedded formulas even if I did not type in manually stuff.

So Excel thinks I made some changes.

How can I tell Excel to NOT prompt me any more to save changes if the changes are only based on formula re-calculations ?

If this is not possible: How can I tell Excel to automatically save all changes without prompting me?

Is it possible to setup this preference for ALL excel docs at once rather than for each Excel doc individually ?

Peter

A:Avoid popup "Save changes?" when nothing was changed in Excel doc?

I don't believe this is possible.

And plus, yes its annoying but without it, there will almost certainly be a time when you will close a document and you will lose everything if you forgot to hit the 'save' button.

Best thing i would say is live with it, it only gives you three option anyway and it only takes two seconds too choose 'yes' or 'no'

Is there any way to avoid/ bypass "File Download Dialoge Box" in IE8? Actually I have a website hosted on Windows Server at local intranet having power point slide shows (.ppsx). Clients (having Windows 7 with IE8) accessing those
slide shows come across File Download prompt. There is requirement to avoid/ bypass that open/ save file popup. Please guide me to do the needful.
It is pertinent to mention that I had tried all the possible ways available at internet through google/ bing. Those inclues (but not limited to)
- Customising IE Internet Options -> Security Settings
- Adjusting IE Advanced Settings
- Registry Editing
- Group Policy Settings
None of these settings work at all. So please dont waste your time suggesting above stated solutions. This must be something out-of-box solution through breaking the ground.

Hi all,

I have a problem with my internet connection on my PC.

The internet connection works fine, until I let my PC idle for about an hour or so. The connection then dies, but can be repaired by the Windows Troubleshooter which fixes the error message about the invalid IP configuration.

I've reset the modem and the router many times. Did not help.

Any (more) ideas?

There is a setting in the properties of the network card to Power it down when idle. Turn that off and see what happens.

Hello,
We have received a few messages from users getting the "Please enter a valid message" when trying to create a thread in the Malware Removal Assistance forum.

So why is this happening? The answer is very simple, while we have added a few check-boxes and fields to better understand the issue, there is still the need to enter a message in the final text box just above the "Create Thread" button.

So, the answer is very simple, if you encounter the "Please enter a valid message" error, just write a message in the final text box. You have the below screenshot to see where you need to enter a message (you can enter any message).

Hello,
we are using IE11 with enhanced protected mode and we have Office 2010 Profesisional installed on our computers.
As a result of the enhanced protected mode some Sharepoint controls are not working any more (like the typical namectrl class). For our own internal sharepoint we just disabled the protected mode in the intranet zone. But we do not want to do this for external
sharepoint sites. Is it possible to just not display the message popup at the bottom of the IE windows? Ist there any GPO setting fo rit?
Thanks a lot

Hello,

I have Windows 7 Pro with 4 users, a user for each member in my family.
When I try to shutdown the system while other users are logged on, I'm getting this message.
How can I force shutdown & avoid this message ?

The reason that I need to force shutdown is that recently, I have bought a Uninterruptible power supply (UPS), to protect my PC hardware.
One of the UPS's features is to shutdown the PC when the battery becomes low.
The problem is that the "Other people are logged on to this computer ..." message pauses the shutdown & the UPS just turned off without shutting down the PC !

Is there any way in Win 7 Pro to avoid this message & to force shutdown even if there are other logged people ?

Regards /Ofer

What UPS do you have - there might be a configuration option.

A:How to fix "not responding" problem in all programs and "lost updates"

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

That temp file that you mentioned, is it in the root of the system drive?
In other words is it located here: C:\1ee10074....

If that is where it is, then it could be from a .NET update. They do not always remove that randomly named folder. Don't delete it just yet, go inside of it (say continue to the permissions security pop ups). If you find several folders with 4 numbers for the name, then it is probably from an update. Those numbered folders are for different languages. You can delete the folder if you want or just leave it. The folder is not the cause of your problems.

Try a scan with this:

Note I can't take any screen shots because my problematic laptop won't even start up fully So as a bit of background my -year-old Toshiba A -S laptop battery has been horrible for "configuring down..." stuck updates" "shutting after in Laptop ages as in my laptop MUST Laptop stuck in "shutting down..." after "configuring updates" be plugged in at all times or else it will immediately spontaneously turn off without a proper shut-down It also spontaneously turns off it it overheats or starts working too hard or something so I don't use it very much - but it's where I keep all my music and movies and I've been gradually transferring these files to other devices which is why I still use it occasionally Anyway nights ago I downloaded and installed updates and after taking a while to install updates it stayed on the quot shutting down quot screen for a long time And when I woke up the next morning it was STILL on the quot shutting down quot screen - and it had been hours by that point I was actually very surprised that it hadn't spontaneously turned off overnight So I did a force-turn-off because I thought it would start up ok Today I turned on the computer figuring it would boot up ok So we get to the start-up screen - it even spends a mere split second on the usual improper-shut-down-how-would-you-like-to-start-up screen it usually spends seconds on that screen and it goes through quot configuring updates quot and this took a while and then it went back to the quot shutting down quot screen And it was stuck there for about minutes before I did another force-turn-off and turned it on again because sometimes something that doesn't work one time does indeed work the next time But not this time It went through the same quot configuring updates quot and quot shutting down quot screens and it's now been stuck on quot shutting down quot for about minutes So what can I do to fix it I can't figure out how to get it to fully boot up because paragraph above just happens over and over again Will I have to take out the hard drive and finally retire my computer Would I be able to take out the hard drive and recover my files Thank you

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I sometimes go to their IM &T page, (Information and Media Technology page) and they state that an upgrade to Vista is ill-advised at this time because of compatibility conflicts with third-party software and several OS bugs that need to be worked out.

I have talked to friends in the industry who have had problems getting customers DSL modem software configured on Vista as well.

Bottom line, if you can get your XP Machine repaired....DO SO instead of going to Vista. If you are a home user, you probably aren't going to need a lot of Vista's advanced features anyway. (At least not for several years.)

At any rate, the computer network at my college has released a statement that said they advise waiting 12-18 MONTHS before doing their change over from XP to Vista. The early test phases for them have NOT been encouraging.

Jack

A:My College Says, "Avoid Vista!"

Thats not surprising, why would any organization spend a huge amount of money deploying a brand new operating system when its just been released and when Windows XP or even Windows 2000 is doing the job. Most organizations will be deploying Vista slowly and as they need to replace or add new computers. For companies deploying, training, and testing a new piece of software is huge and time consuming.

Hi there,
Can someone please help to shed some light on this, or possibly fix this issue?
I've been trying for ages to get my parents computer to download and install updates.
It's running 7 Home Premium 64 bit with SP1.
The Windows Update page shows that Windows could not search for updates, which resulted in the error 8007370B
The link on that page to get help for this error has no results.
The system update readiness tool failed to fix the issue
sfc /scannow in an elevated command prompt results in the error message
Windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation.
I also tried to force WSUS offline updates, but ended up having to remove the temp admin account and cancel the updates when that failed.

Presently, Skype 5.10 is on my computer. But I also have a window's update (Skype 5.10 for Windows (KB2727727)). Problem is that this update won't install and every time I go to shut the computer down, I have to scroll through closing choices (shut down, hibernate, sleep, etc) and as whether or not I want the update installed. As this update can't presently be installed and it's a PITA when going to Sleep as I have to choose between Install Updates and Sleep, how can I get this update to go away without installing it so that I can get to my closing functions without having to muck with Install Update now?

I am putting together a small server and plan on getting this ASUSMB. It takes PC2 6400 memory.

However, there are only two DDR2 800 memory chips recommended on the ASUS website and they are 512meg chips.Here. I would rather use 1Gb, but I can live with the 512 issue.

I had planned on getting these chips.

Newegg does not carry either of the two listed by ASUS and I have never worried about this issue with other systems I have built, so I am probably going to proceed with the Kingston chips. I will be running XP with RAID hard drives.

Anybody have any advice or thoughts?

Okay, here goes.

I'm working on a laptop (XPpro) that won't install the available windows updates. It downloads them and then tries to install each one and fails. I then get a list of the updates that were not installed with the ever helpful message "updates were unable to be successfully installed". I pulled the error 0x8024200e out of the windowsupdate.log file.

I have

1) tried tgal's advice in post #10 from http://forums.techguy.org/t351188&highlight=updates+unable+successfully+installed.html

2) tried justfoo's advice in post #13 from http://forums.techguy.org/t328556&highlight=updates+unable+successfully+installed.html

3) tried renaming the "Software Distribution" folder in the WINNT directory to "Software Distribution Old" and attempting update again.

None of these have solved the issue.

Any help would be welcome.

Thanks,

Raeli

I do a lot of offline updating from my own store. Many of the updates prepare for installation by "searching for updates to this computer". I suppose this is to examine the need for and suitability of the update. The first update searches pretty quickly, but then it's very slow - something like 5 to 10 minutes for each one. I think rebooting after each update would solve the problem, but that's not practical.

I encounter this on every Win7 machine I work on. Why do these updates take so much time scanning, and what can be done about it?

A:Offline updates spend enormous time "searching for updates on this..."

Rather than doing offline updating, why not set up a WSUS server, and point the clients at that for their updates? this has the benefit of automatic collection to the store, and controlled distribution to the clients, as well.

Hello All,

I was referred here by NeonFx from the TechGuy Security forum. He had me run a slew of anti-virus/anti-spyware diagnostics. According to NeonFx my system is currently infection free and he states the problem lies elsewhere.

He also had me run the Windows Update FixIt tool in both Default and Aggressive mode - both of which did not fix the problem. So what is the problem??

PROBLEM:

When I run the install Windows updates, the updates do not install, and I receive the following message (not verbatim, but close):

"Some updates were unable to be installed..."

This problem "came out of no where" and there has been no suspicious activity prior to it starting other than an IE7 redirect rootkit that NeonFx helped me remove (if I recall correctly an infection of agp440)...

Stumped, stumped and stumped...

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

It didn't used to do this, so I must've inadvertently changed some setting somewhere, but darned if I can find it now.

Any ideas?

Hi all Working on an older Dell laptop for a friend ghz single-core GB RAM and cannot seem to get Windows Update to work it will take hours to quot check for Updates" "Check 7 For Windows slow/failing updates? updates quot and then find some I select the ones I want install them it claims they are quot successful quot and that the computer requires a restart I restart to find they Windows 7 "Check For Updates" slow/failing updates? fail Windows 7 "Check For Updates" slow/failing updates? as the computer is restarting and that they continue failing as the computer comes back up after reboot I then check for updates again and get the same issue It seems to install one or two updates each time but the rest seem to fail I know this as the owner has dial-up I know right o and upon this last failure cycle I now see the Win quot reserve your copy quot panel under Windows Update which was never there before I've tried a few things in a few other threads including installing the December Windows Update update patch manually and I am still getting this issue Any help would be greatly appreciated

I think the "updates freezing" issue has come up in another thread and apologies if it has, but I can't find it momentarily.

The screen shots show what I've been looking at for two days now. Obviously something is amiss with Automatic Update but I dunno what, or what to do about it.

Any advice, help????

Mods, please feel free to move me to the other thread I suspect exists.

Cheers

Hi everyone!

Yesterday my HP laptop (Windows 7) started getting BSOD with various types of errors (mostly "STOP: 0x00000F4", "STOP: 0x0000007A", "c00021a" and one "missing %hs, c0000135"). Most of the time it restarts without any issues and works fine right after the BSOD and then an hour or two later I get a BSOD again.

I have tried restoring to Last Known Good Configuration, startup repair, hard disk check, virus scans and I also uninstalled any recently added programs I could think of and cleared up more than 50% of my hard disk space. None of these seem to have helped and I still get BSOD regularly.

I have attached the folder from the SF Diagnostic Tool and would appreciate any advice!
Thank you!

Please go to Start and type in "msinfo32.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Save the report as an .nfo file, then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Also, save a copy as a .txt file and include it also (it's much more difficult to read, but we have greater success in getting the info from it).

Ok so I'm using a custom visual style made by another user however I don't really like the buttons used that I mentioned Changing of "minimize" buttons a theme and "close" "maximize" the above The creator states it is acceptable to change the theme to however you like Changing the "minimize" "maximize" and "close" buttons of a theme as long as you don't redistribute it anywhere Ok so I opened up the msstyles file using Restorator located in the theme folder of this VS I went into the images directory and located what seems Changing the "minimize" "maximize" and "close" buttons of a theme to be the images used for the buttons Intuitively it seems like it would make sense to replace those images with different ones perhaps from another visual style and it should change them However would this actually work Could the theme get messed up in some other way like proportions or something if the new button images are smaller I don't know of any other way to change them that would be easy But I did run into another problem For some visual styles I can't even locate those buttons in the images directory Where else would they be

I am using Windows 7 on my laptop and I have question about when to use "Home", "Work" and "Public" profile.

If I am logging in without setting password, and I am logging in network with "Public" profile, then will any other user, who can see my computer, be able to enter my computer and check the contents on my computer ?

I am connecting to a network and there are 6 other users connected to this network. In the set network location window, if I select the netwoek as "Home", does it mean that other 6 users will not be able to see my computer on network and if I use "Public", then all other six users will be able to see my computer on network ?

Thanks

Hello I had Windows Update automatic checking for updates Windows are date" available up Update ..." "There updates - "Windows to no is disabled with the necessary services for Windows update enabled The last update was Windows Update "Windows is up to date" - "There are no updates available ..." sometime back in February of After manually activating Windows Update Windows Windows Update "Windows is up to date" - "There are no updates available ..." Update was still running after minutes I then quit Windows Update and was going to wait till a later time to activate again However after running some system cleaners I tried to activate Windows Update which produced an error message IIRC the error message indicated a program and parameter was required to run Windows Update Current Windows Vista WindowsUpdateagent Version is Vista x Quite a while back I manually fixed Windows Update after it stopped working and has been working correctly up to now This time instead of a manual fix I tried to use MS fix-it program However MS's current link to download the Fix-it program is not an exe file but a cab file uncertain why MS currently has a link to a cab file instead of an exe file Anyway instead of attempting a manual fix I found a MS windows update agent installation for Vista -Bit After re-installation using the Windows Vista x windowsupdate exe file version xxx Windows Update now displays a window with options stating that quot Windows is up to date quot quot There are no updates available for your computer quot If I select quot Check for Updates quot Windows Update continually runs for over mins without any results I was thinking of allowing Windows Update to run for up to several hours to see if there are any results At this point I'm not certain if Windows Update is working as it should or if something is messed up with it's installation There is another windowsupdate agent available online with a different filename for Windows Vista x quot WindowsUpdateAgent -x exe quot Which is version whereas the one I used has a different filename WindowsUpdateAgent- -x exe which should be version MS Fix-it link downloads a non-executable file quot WindowsUpdateDiagnostic diagcab quot so there's not diagnostic exe file to run So is my Windows Vista x installation up to date Windows Update message of quot Windows is up to date quot - quot There are no updates available for your computer quot is correct

hi,

OK, this is a weird one.

I wanted to move the "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos" folders to another HDD. I moved the "My Documents" Folder to this HDD without a problem but the others I accidentally set the whole HDD as the folder (if that makes sense). So now the music, videos and pictures folders are set to this HDD and dont have an actual folder to change the properties of. Therein lies my dilema.

If anyone can offer any advice on this curly issue it would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, so basically, whenever I turn the computer on, 3 error messages appear:

- A virtual driver failed to inicialize DLL. Chose close to end the program. H:/Windows/system32/code/pRee1.exe

Please help me solve this terrible problem, it is really getting me on my nerves! (oh, and if this helps, I've recently donwloaded this so called "Limewire acceleration", and whenever I ran the setup, it didn't work. I don't really remember the name of the website I downloaded it from, sorry...)

Hi and Welcome to the forum

I am almost certain that you have malware problems. Most like caused by you doing file sharing/ P2P - Limewire.

Suggest that you go here and follow the directions:

Please be advised that the malware people are very busy and it could take a couple days to assist you.

You may want to reinstall the operating system.

Backupthe files that are importantto you before you reinstall.

The "New" installation will overwrite the current one

If you do not format your hard drive before the reinstall the installation should not harm your files (That's why I suggest backingup your files) and will speed up the installation process.

with the well known cmdline programs ASSOC and FTYPE.

No, assigning them through WinExplorer menu does not work.
But this is another problem which should not discussed here.

When I type now one of the following alternative commands at the CommandPrompt then Win7 returns me something like:

assoc .txt=txtfile

"Access denied"
The following error occurs: .txt"

or

ftype txtfile=D:\notepad++\notepad++.exe "%%1"

"Access denied"
The following error occurs: txtfile"

Why?

The command above work fine under WinXP

The INSTRUCTION AT "0x00a96ce0"referenced memory at "000000000" couldn't be written".

That's always what i get when i restart my computer, just before screen goes dark.
I believe that it has to do something with Microsoft updates. The reason i believe this, is that i once reinstalled my PC and didn't have any problem until i didn't update my PC.
And i posted here that thinking my problem was solved but unfortunately i was wrong.

Please if you have any tips on this one let me know it would be greatly appreciated.

I use this HDD perfectly in my car HDD player. But when I try to connect it to my Laptop, it does not show up in disk management.

Please check the attached screen shot..

Thanks for the help....

Boot into "Safe Mode with Networking" (restart while tapping F8 repeatedly) and see if you can install the updates. This should work.

A:Solved: "Configuring Updates" Every Startup & Shutdown {Moved from Malware}

No replies so I found similar issues others had and it led to a complete re-install of WIndows since I had already had KB938371 installed and could not install KB937287-x86.msu even stand-alone. See info here:
Microsoft admits KB937287 & KB938371 problems
Update for Windows Vista (KB938371)
Download standalones KB937287-x86.msu and KB938371-x86.msu
Disable UAC, Anti-virus, Windows firewall and disconnect from internet
Install KB937287 (no reboot required) then KB938371 reboot and it succesfully installs without multi bootups.

Microsoft admits installing KB937287 with other windows updates will not work, and as pulled the patch. Therefore you have to install KB937287 seperately and preferably as a standalone then KB938371 and other patches should install OK. The problem caused many machines to multi-boot with unsuccesful installs, and in some cases failed to system restore.
The standalone patchs can be found at:

A:Windows update "hang" - menu shortcut & installed updates

I'm not sure that resetting WU would actually cure your problem - it sounds to me more of a systemic problem, possibly to do with one of the involved technologies (scripting, NET, etc.).

My wuapp.exe has TrustedInstaller as owner, with only Read and Execute permissions for users and Admins.

Hello. I was wondering how I would go about clearing the auto complete field in the windows update "Installed Updates" window. It seems completely independent from the windows explorer search field.

I was checking to make sure no windows 10 or telemetry updates accidentally got installed and now it's FULL of different KBnumbers.

I tried using the "find" option in the registry, but got freaked out when it brought up a bunch of stuff i didn't recognize and i didnt wanna mess anything up.

Thanks in advance,

Here’s a list of the 9 Windows Updates that were installed. I have no idea which (if any) of them caused the problem. Any suggestions as to how to repair IE8 so that it will again remember my password settings? I’ve tried to reset them, but each time I go onto a site, I have to enter the password all over again. I don’t want to do a System Restore if I don’t have to, so please help, if you can. Thanks so much. Here’s the list:

2. Update for Windows Vista for x64 based systems KB9683389
3. Security Update for Windows Vista for x64 based systems KB956744

8. Security Update for Windows Vista for x64 based systems KB971557
9. Security Update for Windows Vista for x64 based systems KB973540

i have a feeling it was the update for the x64 based systems. that is the most general optoin, as the others refer to windows defender and the security updates

now you have an idea of what caused it, do what you can.
otherwise, its the restore

Installed Vista Home Premium SP OEM on Gigabyte GA-EX -UD and the computer immediately began to download and install updates via quot auto update quot These updates did not affect the operability of Vista HOWEVER the nd group of quot updates quot there were like - completely disabled my onboard NIC drivers and I could no longer connect to the internet There were no updated NIC drivers on the Gigabyte website for the motherboard I used quot operation due Updates" Vista "Auto 64 after of crashed 24 SP1 hours to System Restore quot but the system would not allow Vista 64 SP1 crashed after 24 hours of operation due to "Auto Updates" the NIC drivers to be reinstalled This is TOTALLY unacceptable when you are obligated to download quot Auto-Updates quot and then they require a complete reinstall of the OS to repair the damage caused by the quot Update quot I was forced to completely reinstall Vista SP I allowed the first updates to install then I disabled quot auto updates quot Anyone else have this problem Unfortunately I was unable to determine exactly which module created the problem - but I tried quot uninstalling quot the top five quot updates quot on the quot installed updates quot list but could not get the system to allow the NIC drivers to initialize install

A:Vista 64 SP1 crashed after 24 hours of operation due to "Auto Updates"

Sorry to hear about your problem and hope you got it sorted out. I myself have had no problems with Auto Updates, I just make sure it doesn't download and install drivers. You can do this by opening:

1- Windows Update, then clicking on...
2- Change settings, and under...
3- Recommended Updates make sure the...
4- "Include recommended updates when downloading, installing, or notifying me about updates" check box is unchecked. This will prevent those recommended driver updates from automatically downloading and installing on your system. From your explanation, it sounds like that's exactly what happened - a driver got downloaded and installed.

For future reference

I've tried some solutions to this rare situation and nothing.

I mean the following:
By the way, I've noted that:
1.- In 'View-Choose Details' window, there is "Name" option only (may be this is normal):
2.- But, in 'Tools-Folder Options' window, in the 'View' tab, option "Always show menus" (normally in "Files and Folders" section, second position) has disappeared!:

I didn't pressed the "Restore Defaults" button because I think this is for other purpose, isn't it?

So, I don't know what to do... I wonder someone of you may give me a hand to solve this...
In other words, please help me!

Thanks in advance,

A:Windows 7 "Check for updates" window appears in blank!

What solutions did you try? Did you do a sfc /scannow operation? Have you run a complete virus and malware scan? Have you read this?

Hello All,

This is yet another issue with Windows Update on 7; I recently (a couple of weeks or so ago) upgraded my father's computer to Windows 7 and he loves it.

However, whenever either of us try and use Windows Update, it sits there for hours and hours on "Installing Updates 1 of 2."

Does anybody have any ideas where I could look as to why this is happening?

I will post more information on this when I can find more detailed account of what's going on with 7.
Thanks,
- Robert

A:Windows Update on 7 stalls while "Installing Updates (2/3)" on AMD64 m

you could try :-

go to services (click start and type SER

stop windows update service

go to c:/windows/software distribution/data store

empty this folder

restart/start windows update service

open windows update and it should be red indicating never searched for updates
then try again

also check installed programs and make sure what your trying to install hasn't already automatically installed when you first installed Windows 7

just an idea
