Unable to open an elevated Windows Explorer window

Q: Unable to open an elevated Windows Explorer window

Hello, In Windows Vista, it was possible to run an elevated Windows Explorer window. To do so, enable the "Launch folder windows in a separate process" check box, log off, and then log back on. After that, you can right-click the Windows Explorer shortcut and choose "Run as administrator." This no longer works in Windows 7. It is a legitimate need to occasionally run Windows Explorer elevated; for example, to register or unregister WSC (Windows script component files) or to run Windows scripts elevated. Can anyone comment on this limitation and whether it is a flaw or by design? Thanks! Bill Stewart

Preferred Solution: Unable to open an elevated Windows Explorer window

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am currently using Explorer++ to work around this limitation. But I would still like to hear an official answer regarding this problem. Bill

I am noticing that when I click to open a folder in the File Explorer, the folder automatically opens in a new window.

Then if I click on another folder or file, that automatically opens in a new window as well and so on. It is annoying to have to keep closing windows.

I cannot locate how to change that behavior back to where I had it where it only opened in another window if I clicked for it to do so and not by default.

I am not seeing that as an option in the menus.

Any suggestions or advice here?

Hi sunrise12,
you can certainly turn that off, go to any folder or file and press "alt", then press T (Tools) and then press O (Folder Options), this is your folder options, the first thing you come to is this :

select "open each folder in the same window", apply and click ok and that should fix this for you.

My wife's computer has a problem I can't work out - though I suspect it's a simple setting I can't find.

Whenever she opens a second IE window the earlier one closes immediately. She can't have two windows on screen. This is true even if a right mouse click selects open link in new window. The link opens but the previous page shuts.

I have run Spybot, Adaware, Cleanup and virus checker.

I have now set up Mozilla for her which works fine. but I'm still puzzled why IE doesn't work.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Jim

As Edge browser doesn't support modaldialog, I want to pass some value to another window using window.open
From a parent window say A, trying to open another window - ChildWindow.htm using window.open. I am unable to pass string value from A.

var dialog = window.open("Child_Window.htm?", "title", "width=550px, height= 350px,left=100,top=100,menubar=no,status=no,toolbar=no");

dialog.MyVariable = "some string value";
dialog.opener = window;

In Child window, I get undefined reading the variable in the second window.

Hello I know this has been covered elsewhere before and before coming here to ask this question I scoured Google and multiple forums and threads and I can't seem to get a straight answer I have two PCs one is running Windows Professional x and the folder to in new open in Ctrl+Click Explorer Windows window other one is running Windows Professional bit On the bit machine when I am in Windows Explorer if I Ctrl+Click to open folder in new window in Windows Explorer hold down Ctrl+Click to open folder in new window in Windows Explorer the Ctrl key and click on a folder in the left navigation pane it opens that folder in a new window This is behaviour similar to right clicking on the folder and selecting quot Open in New Window quot but I like the keyboard shortcut and that's my habit As far as I can remember this is the way it has always worked on this particular computer and although I do have Classic Shell installed that is only to get back the Up button that I liked from Windows XP I don't think I modified the registry and I don't have AutoHotKey installed My mystery is that no matter what I do Folder Options registry etc I cannot seem to replicate this behaviour on the other computer which is running the same operating system in bit mode It's odd because sometimes on computers running Windows at work I will try to do the same thing and it won't work and I would just think that's odd perhaps there is a setting somewhere And now it doesn't work on one of my own computers and I can't see what the difference is in the settings between the two computers I saw that someone had asked this question in the past and the suggestions given were to either do Ctrl N to open new window and then click on the folder you want or right click and say Open in New Window It is much easier to just quickly hold down Ctrl and then click on the folder I use it all the time and it definitely works in Windows on at least my main bit machine Can anyone explain what I am missing here It's a small thing and probably something very obvious but help would be much appreciated Thanks in advance

A:Ctrl+Click to open folder in new window in Windows Explorer

Well, I guess I had answered my own question above! Sorry for wasting anyone's time that did bother to read but apparently that Ctrl+Click is a feature of Classic Shell, just not one that is obvious among the settings. I installed Classic Shell on the other PC and bingo, it worked like I wanted. Mystery solved. I guess for others looking for the same functionality, Classic Shell is the way to go.

A:Unable to open Windows Explorer

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Download FixAgent and unzip it. Run FixAgent.exe. It should fix something. If nothing is fixed, skip to the next step for the HijackThis fixes. If something is found, also download home_missing_114 and unzip it. Run the Home winkey missing batch file. Remember: ONLY run home_missing_114 if FixAgent found something.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\nyxmc.dll/sp.html#10213
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\nyxmc.dll/sp.html#10213

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\nyxmc.dll
C:\WINDOWS\jcjnl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\mfcsu32.dll
C:NO_SUCH_MHT.MHT!

Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. If there were some entries that didn't show up in Safe Mode, you may check and fix those that appear now in normal mode (if you do that, make sure to run a new scan again). Save the log file and run KRC HijackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in the forum.

Hi everyone!

I tried to ignore this problem, but it has become increasingly frustrating when I have to work with files in Windows Explorer.

The problem is, when I right-click on a file and choose Properties, it takes 5-8 seconds to open the File Properties Window. Strangely, when I do the same with folders (Folder Properties) the window opens almost instantaneously as it should. I have tried to fiddle around with ShellExView but to no avail - after all, I assume that program is just for controlling context menu entries. I searched and googled but I couldn't find any similar problems, the closest I got was that software.

Do you know what's the problem? Thanks in advance!

You can keep disabling more non-microsoft extensions in shellexview and see if any of them are causing it (do a system backup first)

Help!!!

A:Unable to open/restore/maximise windows explorer

sounds like a corrupt profile. try creating a new profile for the user, don't delete the old one, and see if that works. but first, have the user go to another computer and see if his profile works there. if that doesn't work, the user may have a problem with permissions, did it ever work for the user? just had a thought, you need to get on the server and check the proup policy settings for that user before doing anything else, then try the other computer, then try the new profile. sorry for the confusion, it's been a couple of months since i worked on active directory.

A:No REG Command in "Open elevated command window here" DOS Box

Hello Fred, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Is this the tutorial you used below to add "Open elevated command window here"? Open Command Window Here as Administrator
The REG /? command works for me using this when I right clicked on C:\Users and Open elevated command window here.
Do you have your UAC notification settings set to at least the default or top level? Normally when you use "Open elevated command window here", you will get a UAC prompt to approve before the elevated CMD window opens. If you do not get a UAC prompt, then this may be why you are having this issue.

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

Issue; When attempting to open a secondary window or follow a link which does so, the new window appears but is waiting endlessly for the incorrect website to display.Steps taken; Cleared temp Internet files, etc. = waiting endlessly for blank website to appear. I just finished [finally] updating my copy of Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro (manually downloaded the ISO from Microsoft and did an in-place update within the existing copy of W8). After I did all of the available Windows Updates, I noticed that, whenever I try and open an elevated Command Prompt window (I want to do this to try and manually do some things to remove Windows.old, since it says that the directory is not empty), I see it open, but close instantly. A non-elevated Command Prompt window opens just fine. I searched, and haven't found anything. This also happens in safe mode.

I use Windows Explorer numerous times every day I like to navigate to folders using the folders pane and click on items in main view I sometimes drill down to folders in the main view to finish my navigation until I'm at the folder I wish to see All of the sudden I'm finding that when I click on a folder in the main view a new Explorer window pops up I did not change any of my preferences in this regard I went into the Tools-- gt Folder Options and saw that quot Open each folder in the same window quot was still selected as I'd left it long ago a couple of years now So I switched the radio button to the quot Open new folder quot option then switched it back to opening the folders in the same view I clicked quot Apply quot and folder "Open Explorer in longer each no window" same working Windows closed Explorer I did this as a kind of quot forced quot reset Then I opened Explorer again and it's still not obeying this setting What's going on Is this influenced by some other settings location I haven't looked at yet AFAIK this started not long after I had uninstalled IE and IE rolling back to IE then installed IE again I did this to resolve a peculiar issue with certain files marked as corrupt in SFC scannow turns out it's a defect when going to IE from IE I do realize that Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer share a lot of the same files But this is functionality exclusive to Windows Explorer Really strange

A:Windows Explorer "Open each folder in same window" no longer working

Hello Gary,

You might see if downloading and merging the .reg for the listed Folder and Directory options in the tutorial below may be able to help. It will restore the default associations and registry entries for folders and drives, and hopefully fix this for you.

Hope this helps,

Hello all,

I am unable to open the Command Prompt window using Start->Run and entering cmd. When I enter cmd, all of the icons on my desktop disappear, the screen flashes, and then the icons reappear. The Command Prompt window never appears, not even briefly, and there are no error messages. I have gone into the System32 folder and double-clicked on cmd.exe, and the exact same thing happens. I am able to perform other commands using Start->Run such as %APPDATA%, msconfig, and explorer.exe, but the Command Prompt simply will not open. Any and all help is appreciated.

Win+R, type cmd, hit enter eith ctrl+shift pressed ; and 2). start > all programs > accessories > command prompt > right click and run as admit. The prompt should be C:\Windows\System32_

But What prompt I am having is C:\Users\username_

Am I doing it wrong? Then what I am to do? I have user account control settings turned off.

This has buffaloed me for some time but with the aid of an article I read I may have a solution - at least it has been so for a few days. Below is my solution for x64.

Open Windows Explorer and right click any file in the left pane. Select Properties>Customize, and from the drop down menu select Documents so the machine knows what it is customizing. Check for subfolders. Click ok and manually maximize the window.

Right click anywhere in the right pane. Click View>List (or another choice).

Select Organize>Folder and Search Options>View>Apply to Folders. Click Apply.

Hope this works for you.

I notice that this problem has come up a lot but none of the suggested solutions seem to work for me so far. I am running windows vista and outlook 2007. It has been running fine for several years but suddenly won't open and I get the error message ' cannot open outlook window'. I have tried the 'outlook.exe/ resetnavpane' in the start search and then clicking on programme - it opens outlook but a completely new version with non of my contacts etc. Grateful for any ideas.

I've had this problem for about two days. I had to use IE for a site, and in the two minutes I was on got slammed by spyware. I rooted most of it out of my system, but this problem seems to remain:

Whenever I attempt to open a windows explorer window (I.E.: My Computer, My Documents, Search, Etc.), explorer.exe stops running and the taskbar hence vanishes. It does not come back on its own and I have to use taskmanager to restart it, but it still does this anyway. After a restart it runs fine, but after a while this problem starts up again.

Any help would be appreciated.

The thing is all my internet tabs and searching are in chrome. I do not like internet explorer not firefox. I actually think i deleted internet explorer off my computer because when i go to remove program files... i don't see internet explorer there. Does that mean it has been removed?
However, when i go to windows icon on the bottom left and then type internet explorer, i see it. It always have the message at the bottom would you like IE as your default browser. However... the page never ever loads. For example i click on it and it goes to msn.com but i never seen msn.com. The page basically freezes.

You might be able to create a desktop shortcut to open the online poker website. See the last post in this forum thread:

windows - Specific browser for specific links - Super User

If the online poker site now opens in Internet Explorer it doesn't seem likely that IE has been removed. You could check to see if IE was turned off rather than removed.

Hello All,

Company i work for just started implementing Win7. Since change from XP we (local IT) lost possibility to use command "runas /user:…. "explorer /separate" " which we used to remotely connect to network drives which normal users dont have access to (drives with applications, updates, drivers etc.). I'm looking for a way to remotely open explorer window with admin rights. Is there a way to do so? Right mouse click + shift -> run as different user dosen't work.

A:I'm looking for a way to remotely open explorer window as admin

Depending on what you want to do you could setup either Teamviewer TeamViewer - Free Remote Access and Remote Desktop Sharing over the Internet or a VNC program like TightVNC TightVNC: VNC-Compatible Free Remote Control / Remote Desktop Software either of which will allow you to remotely control the PC

I know somewhere there is a simple answer to this, but I have been scratching my head and googling for hours with no joy.

I have IE9 browser pinned to my taskbar.
When I click on it a windows internet page opens with my home page (google). The E icon now disappears and I have the google (or what ever site I am on) in the taskbar.

Ideally what I want to do is click on the IE9 icon in the taskbar and it REMAINS there and the home page opens up with the bar remaining in the taskbar.

So for example if I clicked on the IE9 icon five times I would have five separate pages open with 5 bars all showing google in the taskbar.

I hope that makes sense, I used to have it that way before I reformatted .

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

A:Internet Explorer 9 open new window from taskbar

Hello TheEagles,

You should be able to right click on the IE9 icon on the taskbar, then click on Internet Explorer to open a new window of IE9 to your homepage.

You could also press and hold Shift, and click on the IE9 icon on the taskbar to open a new window of IE9 to your homepage.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Have you tried unchecking 'reuse windows for launching shortcuts' in tools>internet options>advanced? Also, you can try adding the 'new' switch to the IE shortcut, right click on the shortcut>properties and add [space] -new at the end of the target box.

I have a friend who is suddenly experiencing an issue where they are no longer able to Open an Excel file through their Windows Explorer (e.g. when trying to open a Excel file from within their My Documents folder). After double clicking on the file, Excel opens and acts as if it is opening the file but then proceeds to show just a blank worksheet. The file does not appear to be corrupt since they can then go to File/Open from within Excel, locate the folder and then Open it without a problem.

Any suggestions? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as to the cause and resolution for this.

Thank you greatly,

Mike

Hello A week ago my computer started playing ad sounds randomly but I first couldn t see where it open window running with Internet in background ads no explorer was coming from I thought it was from a page I had opened but even with Firefox closed it kept on doing it And it sounded like it would play only a portion of the ad like a few seconds Later I started seeing small ad windows and experiencing random redirections to commercial websites on Firefox I also noticed I was using up a lot of internet data it went up to GB in a day And finally I noticed internet explorer was open in task manager but I didn t open open it and there was no window to be seen I have Kaspersky AV and ran it with no results I ran MBAM and it found a bunch of Internet explorer running ads in background with no window open potentially unwanted program which Internet explorer running ads in background with no window open I all removed I also went through my program list googled the ones that I din t know and uninstalled a couple that were suspicious After that the random sounds and ads and redirections stopped everything seemed to be OK But a couple of days ago I noticed high data usage again and checked task manager Here it was again internet explorer open with no visible window There was none of the other symptoms though I ran Kaspersky and MBAM again with no results I also tried MBAM anti-rootkit with no luck I installed NetWorx in order to try identifying what was using so much data I found that avp exe was using a lot but I later read that this was actually Kaspersky and that some programs would connect to the internet via Kaspersky hence the high data usage Internet explorer does not use much data if at all I can t end the task from the application tab in the task manager but I can end the processes in the processes tab and the internet explorer disappears from the task tab then However it comes back after a while So after desperate hours of search for a solution I found your website Below are the logs for MBAM and DSS I posted two logs for MBAM the first one I got before I removed all the PUPs and a new one clean These were obtained while internet explorer is opened in task manager Thank you for your help Malwarebytes Anti-Malware www malwarebytes org Scan Date Scan Time PM Logfile MBAM log txt Administrator Yes Version Malware Database v Rootkit Database v License Free Malware Protection Disabled Malicious Website Protection Disabled Self-protection Disabled OS Windows Service Pack CPU x File System NTFS User Reungoat Scan Type Threat Scan Result Completed Objects Scanned Time Elapsed min sec Memory Enabled Startup Enabled Filesystem Enabled Archives Enabled Rootkits Disabled Heuristics Enabled PUP Enabled PUM Enabled Processes No malicious items detected Modules No malicious items detected Registry Keys PUP Optional SearchProtect A HKU S- - - - - - - - ED FC -E E- C D-BF - C B CE - SOFTWARE MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER SEARCHSCOPES DB FA-EAFB- -A B-F D EE FA No Action By User a ddada ecc b f ba PUP Optional ClickDownload A HKU S- - - - - - - - ED FC -E E- C D-BF - C B CE - SOFTWARE ClickDownload No Action By User eb f ff aa d c ff PUP Optional Softonic A HKU S- - - - - - - - ED FC -E E- C D-BF - C B CE - SOFTWARE Softonic No Action By User f ee cc c af d b e ed fb Registry Values No malicious items detected Registry Data No malicious items detected Folders No malicious items detected Files PUP Optional Conduit A C Users Reungoat AppData Roaming uTorrent ism exe No Action By User a cea fe c b be a a PUP Optional Amonetize A C Recycle Bin S- - - - - - - RPTMVC exe No Action By User b af b d f dc eb PUP Optional SearchProtect A C Users Reungoat AppData Local Temp SPSetup exe No Action By User a d cfe c b ef de PUP Optional Conduit A C Users Reungoat AppData Local Temp utt tmp exe No Action By User ad ae bdcd afc a af PUP Optional SearchProtect A C Users Reungoat AppData Local Temp nsd D exe No Action By User b e e a c b a e fe PUP Optional Conduit ... Hi there,
I've been searching a lot, trying to find a solution to this problem, but no solution.
The problem is that, when I open a folder, explorer will allways open a new window, and I end up with lots of windows, which becomes really annoying.
Also, nothing happens when I change folders options to "open each folder in the same window". I checked it, unckecked it, checked it, restarted the computer, stopped the explorer process at the task manager, nothing worked.

This is really annoying. Please help.

A:Explorer opens a new window every time I open a folder

With Win exploer open and from the menu bar:
Tools | Folder Options | General tab | Browse folders section|
choose Open each folder in the same window

I am always manipulation files between several folders so I have several iterations of Windows Explorer open when my computer boots up and showing the contents of the folders that I manipulate all the time. Using XP files moved or copied into another folder always appeared at the bottom of the explorer window and that was good because although they were out of alphabetical order I always knew where to find the new files in the explorer window. They would stay at the bottom until I clicked 'Refresh' or changed the focus to another folder or shut down that explorer.
Windows 7 explorer behaves differently and places new files in alphabetical order. Is there a way it can be changed so that new files show at the bottom of the explorer window?

Thanks in advance

A:Order of new files added to an open explorer window

Hi if you right click inside the folder and choose "sort by" then click more you can then check the box that says "date modified". At the top of the folder you can then click the date modified column and all of the files will be arranged in the order that they have been created, moved or changed

Whenever i doubleclick on any of the Drives(C: , D: ) a windows search window appears, if i have to open i have to rightclick and select open...also i observed that when i right click on my c drive or d drive the first option i have is "search" in bold. and then the next option is open. whereas for anyother folder open is my first option when i right click and in bold!!!

I can't open MS Office application files from the Explore window or from Desktop.

The MS Office applications icons, such as WORD or EXCEL, have been replaced. All my Word files now bear the Wordpad icon and when clicked open as such. My Excel files now bear some other icon that no application on my machine can open.

However, when I open an office app, such as WORD or EXCEL, and then try to open a related file that now has a funny icons, they open properly.

Have MS xp; Excel 2002; Word 2002.

Grateful for advice.

A:[SOLVED] Can't open Word or Excel files from Explorer window

You probably need to set the file assocations.

If you go into your Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types (tab), then scroll down until you locate those file extensions (.doc, .xls, etc...).

Alternatively, there is probably somewhere in Microsoft word, or excel where you can automatically set file associations, but it would depend on which version you have.

Hello As stated one of our customers has some windows based software Sage Line and Telemagic to be precise which is run from a shortcut on the desktop mapped to a network share with the exe located within however whenever you run either of these shortcuts or even if you navigate directly to the file you get the error quot Windows cannot access the specified to explorer open but from unable exe prompt? from can cmd device path or file You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item quot however the users in question have full local rights and full control over the files unable to open exe from explorer but can from cmd prompt? on the server inc the exe As they are part of the USERs group which have full control The Administrator has no problem in getting this file to run now the confusing part from the unable to open exe from explorer but can from cmd prompt? cmd prompt the file can be accessed So creating a batch file solves the issue However this being more of a work around than a solution There is no group policies that are effecting this as no other users are struggling Maybe there is a local policy in effect but i have no idea where to look Any ideas would be ace Thanks Ash nbsp

I logged on to AOL IM and looked at a friend's away message. She had at the bottom a link www.talkstocks.net and I clicked on it to see what it was. Well, it took me to a page saying something about adware on the computer and removing it. Anyhow, it asked me if I'd like to download something, I said No. Then, my computer just went haywire, the little green light saying the hard drive was busy kept flashing and I could hear my hard drive churning away. I did the three finger salute, control alt delete, and canceled out of everything. Then when I click on explorer to open it it says server busy! HELP PLEASE!!! I'm on a friends computer now.

There is a Trojan that causes this. Suggest you start a thread here: TSF Virus help.

When the Trojan has been killed, do this:

Open IE, then click, Tools - Internet Options, click Connections tab - LAN Settings, make sure 'Automatically Detect' is checked and that the 'Uses Proxy' is unchecked.

I used the browser for only a few minutes then suddenly it started acting crazy.
I type the address in the bar, the web page opens for a second then it redirects to a blank page so I'm not able to go anywhere.
Please check the screen shots.

PS: I struggled with the previous Windows installation because the upgrade from IE8 to IE9 corrupted the system, not I fresh installed Windows and again Internet Explorer is giving problems, how stupid is that and what Micro$oft is doing!!!

My Internet Explorer 6 running on Windows XP will not open links in Outlook Express or on the web. All I get is a blank white screen. This is a sudden development. I have installed XP SP 1 as well as all the latest IE6 upgrades/service packs. After a few moments an error message - "Modname: Winshow.dll" comes up and shuts down IE6. Restarting XP is the only way to access the internet. After a short time the message recurs.

Has anybody encountered this problem. I need help!

A:Win32.Virut.Gen.D has changed explorer files to .lnk, unable to open.

I'm afraid I have very bad news. Your system is infected with a nasty variant of Virut, a dangerous polymorphic file infector with IRCBot functionality which infects .exe, .scr files, and opens a back door that compromises your computer. Using this backdoor, a remote attacker can access and instruct the infected computer to download and execute more malicious files. -- Note: As with most malware infections, the threat name may be different depending on the anti-virus or anti-malware program which detected it. Each security vendor uses their own naming conventions to identify various types of malware.Understanding virus names Threat aliases for Win32.Win32.Virut Threat aliases for Win32.Virtob.Gen.12 With this particular infection, the safest solution and only sure way to remove it effectively is to reformat and reinstall the OS. Why? According to this Norman White Paper Assessment of W32/Virut, some variants can infect the HOSTS file and block access to security related web sites. Other variants of virut can even penetrate and infect .exe files within compressed files (.zip, .cab, rar). The Virux and Win32/Virut.17408 variants are an even more complex file infectors which can embed an iframe into the body of web-related files and infect script files (.php, .asp, .htm, .html, .xml). When Virut creates infected files, it also creates non-functional files that are corrupted beyond repair and in some instances can disable Windows File Protection. In many cases the infected files cannot be disinfected properly by your anti-virus. When disinfection is attempted, the files become corrupted and the system may become irreparable. The longer virut remains on a computer, the more critical system files will become infected and corrupt so the degree of damage can vary.

The virus disables Windows File Protection by injecting code into the "winlogon.exe" process that patches system code in memory.CA Virus detail of W32/Virut The virus has a number of bugs in its code, and as a result it may misinfect a proportion of executable files....some W32/Virut.h infections are corrupted beyond repair.McAfee Risk Assessment and Overview of W32/Virut There are bugs in the viral code. When the virus produces infected files, it also creates non-functional files that also contain the virus...Due to the damaged caused to files by virut it's possible to find repaired but corrupted files. They became corrupted by the incorrect writing of the viral code during the process of infection. undetected, corrupted files (possibly still containing part of the viral code) can also be found. this is caused by incorrectly written and non-function viral code present in these files.AVG Overview of W32/Virut Virut is commonly spread via a flash drive (usb, pen, thumb, jump) infection using RUNDLL32.EXE and other malicious files. It is often contracted by visiting remote, crack and keygen sites. These type of sites are infested with a smörgåsbord of malware and a major source of system infection. ...warez and crack web pages are being used by cybercriminals as download sites for malware related to VIRUT and VIRUX. Searches for serial numbers, cracks, and even antivirus products like Trend Micro yield malcodes that come in the form of executables or self-extracting files...quick links in these sites also lead to malicious files. Ads and banners are also infection vectors...Keygen and Crack Sites Distribute VIRUX and FakeAV However, the CA Security Advisor Research Blog have found MySpace user pages carrying the malicious Virut URL. Either way you can end up with a computer system so badly damaged that recovery is not possible and it cannot be repaired. When that happens there is nothing you can do besides reformatting and reinstalling the OS. Since virut is not effectively disinfectable, your best option is to perform a full reformat as there is no guarantee this infection can be completely removed. In most instances it may have caused so much damage to y... Read more

I was told to also post this iunder this category.

I'm about to tear out my hair. First Windows Explorer keeps stopping, searches for solution then restarts. About the time this problem, I noticed that Windows Explorer will change the original creation date on some of my files. It might be all files in folder or just certain types. I've yet to make a connection with when this is happening or what is causing it. Not necessarily when Windows Explorer stops. It's difficult when you can't tell which is the oldest/newest file in a folder.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, which I keep updated, McAfee, AntiMalware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware, also all updated.

I'm begging! Can someone help me please?

Thanks,
Lisa

We have all of our user's email set up to deliver to a personal folder that resides on a server with Windows 2003. We have a small number of people that get the error message below. They eventually get in, but either have to close outlook and reopen several times or they have to reboot their computer. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks!

"Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook, Unable to open the Outlook window.
The set of folders could not be opened. The server is not available.
Contact your administrator if this condition persists."

I have tried every suggestion I could find on the internet, but still haven't found a solution.

any help would be much appreciated.

I am desperate for help. Can anybody help me with an idiot proof step by step guide of how to restore my pc to happier times? It got infected with various virusses and malware inc google re-direct and I ended up with palladium pro rendering it useless. . . I have xp home edition. Used bleeping computer for step by step instructions of how to remove and was successfull... after a few days allsorts of popups, security warnings and redirect issues were back again which system restore got over (or so I thought). All this has come from me installing microsoft security essentials I beleive? I can no longer get on the internet, system restore now fails and I can't add/remove programs either?? Malwarebytes full scan shows 0 infected files. . . Is there anything I can do. Only have limited internet access through my mobile phone. Thanks in advance!

A:system restore failing, internet explorer won't open, unable to add/remove programs??

The assumption by many...that the effects of malware can be easily overcome and the system returned to happier days...just is not true.

In addition to file damage which may have directly inflicted by the malware...there is always the possiblity that key files have been damaged during efforts to troubleshoot and remove known/detected malware itesm.

System manufacturer and model, please?

Do you have any Windows installation CDs?
