Looking for a laptop for my mother

Q: Looking for a laptop for my mother

My father wants me to find my mother a laptop, he gave me a budget of around \$700. In all likelihood she will mostly use it for facebook, facebook games and movies. She will mostly be using the laptop while working in a coffee stand so she can probably plug it in whenever she needs to. She probably wont replace it for some time so something that will hold up well over the years would be nice. She hates change and is used to using windows systems so I'm not sure if she would go for a mac. I really don't know a damn thing about laptops and I have no idea what to look for or where to start so any help would be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Looking for a laptop for my mother

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

A:WOW Brand new laptop - I hit the mother load. Help me!

Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.
After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.

Double-click mbam-setup-2.X.X.XXXX.exe to install the application (X's are the current version number).
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
Once MBAM opens, when it says Your databases are out of date, click the Fix Now button.
Click the Settings tab at the top, and then in the left column, select Detections and Protections, and if not already checked place a checkmark in the selection box for Scan for rootkits.
Click the Scan tab at the top of the program window, select Threat Scan and click the Scan Now button.
If you receive a message that updates are available, click the Update Now button (the update will be downloaded, installed, and the scan will start).
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
If potential threats are detected, ensure that Quarantine is selected as the Action for all the listed items, and click the Apply Actions button.
While still on the Scan tab, click the link for View detailed log, and in the window that opens click the Export button, select Text file (*.txt), and save the log to your Desktop.
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can also be viewed by clicking the History tab and then selecting Application Logs.
POST THE LOG FOR REVIEW.

Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
Click the button.
For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
Double click on the icon on your desktop.
Click the Start button.
Accept any security warnings from your browser.
Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
Click Advanced settings and select the following:
Scan potentially unwanted applications
Scan for potentially unsafe applications
Enable Anti-Stealth technology
When the scan completes, click List Threats
Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
Click the Back button.
Click the Finish button.
NOTE:Sometimes if ESET finds no infections it will not create a log.

Working with my mother's HP Pavilion G series laptop running Win 7. This morning I was on the internet and the website I was on (Facebook) stopped responding. I then tried to end my internet session and the screen froze. Performed control-alt-delete to restart, and when it did, I was unable to access any programs or internet. I've been working on it all day. Even tried rebooting in safe mode, but that freezes now. A cold restart gets me back to the normal startup, but the program icons come up slow and when I move the cursor over the taskbar, it starts cycling for an indeterminate time.

Any help here? Got plenty of ram, and hd space. This is the first time I've experienced this problem.

A:Mother Brd. sent to be fixed. Can I install Win.7 "Ultimate" on Laptop

Not if you want to start up Ultimate when the mobo comes back. You can have each license on only one machine at a time.

Most users don't need the few extra expensive features in Ultimate. Compare Windows 7 Editions - Windows 7 Forum

I have an MSI 645 Ultra Mobo. I want to set the FSB from its default of 100MHz to 200MHz. This is what the mfger touted, and I took as a benefit.

When ever I change it in the BIOS it always defaults back to 100. I have tried the forum at MSI and have not yet recieved an answer.

Can anyone here help.

Thanks,

Word to your mother! What processor is installed in the MB? Just because you want it to run at 200MHz doesn't mean the CPU will run at that bus speed. Your memory also might have an issue with it.

That most likely uses SIMMs that have to be installed in pairs. I think the maximum memory you can use is 64 mb, so you need 2 32 mb sticks. That kind of memory is hard to find now. Can you describe what the RAM looks like?

Unhide Files
Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and select "Show hidden files and folders". Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" option. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside "Hide file extensions for known file types". Click OK.

WARNING: Do not run cleanup under Windows XP x64 Edition. If you're not sure if you have the 64-bit version of Windows then you probably do not; however, you can check by using IE to download the whichcpu tool and then running it.

Please download, install, and update AVG Anti-Spyware.Load AVG Anti-Spyware and then click the Shield tab at the topClick on the word active to change it to inactive.

Click the Update tab at the top:Under Manual update, click Start update. After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful". If you are having trouble updating, you can also download and run the manual updater.

While ComboFix is running, please do not click or move the window, as this may cause the tool to stall. When the tool has finished, it will produce a log for you and save it as C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log in your next reply.

Reboot
Reboot your system to Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears and choosing Safe Mode from the list. On some systems, this may be the F5 key so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on with your usual account. Make sure to close any open windows.

A:Mother in law has no desktop

I am now back home.

My Mother in Law was very anxious to get her computer back, as she has a small business and uses it to place orders. So, I have to admit that I actually ran a full scan with "Avast". It identified the trojan and did a boot scan, and says it cleared whatever it found.

Course the computer is the same as it was...still no desktop, but the "my pictures" screen saver worked, where it didn't before. And all of a sudden in the toolbar at the bottom of the computer; the bar that the "start" menu is on; there is a clickable word that says, "desktop". I can click on it and up pops a menu: "my computer". On that menu it shows "my documents", "Network places" and has "control panel" on it! The Documents file is empty. But, the control panel has a regular control panel menu, which includes IE! I tested it, and the IE redirector has been removed. I came to this site and it worked. But, when I tried to place a short cut to IE on the desktop, it didn't work. I tried to place a short cut to "my documents" and "control panel" and nothing would show up on the desktop.

The recycle bin was also in the control panel. I checked it and it looks like the desktop stuff was in there. It had several desktop short cuts in there. I tried to restore them, but again, it would not do it.

I had to go get my kids from school, so that is the last thing I did. I will be back at it tomorrow. I hope that I will be able to run the scans, but doubt that I can save them to the desktop. I will try to save them in "my documents" if that is alright, or if you have a better suggestion, I am open to it.

It should be an ATX form factor. I have an 8300 and it's a standard ATX mobo. The only thing you need to be careful of is that there isn't anything proprietary like the front panel connections or power supply connections. Sometimes they use things that are not standard.

Hello,
I am wanting to get a new mother board, to use with the AMD XP 1700 or greater processor. I am wanting to sue RDRam. However all I see is DDRAM boards. Is DD and RD Ram the same thing??? If a mother board supports DDRam will it also support RDRam???
Is there any reomendation for a mother board that will use RDRam and the AMD chip???

Thanks,

Bear

A:Mother Board

Currently, there are no motherboards or chipsets that support RDRAM with AMD processors. It could be a possiblity in the future.

RDRAM and DDR RAM are not at all the same thing. They are two different types of memory. None of the memory types are interchangeable. A particular memory slot can only accept one type of memory. Some motherboards support two different types of memory, but they have separate slots for each type, and you can only use memory sticks of one type. You cannot use both types at one time.

So I just bought a new mother board for my dell studio 1458 laptop and it was a direct replacement except the graphics card is different. I put everything back together, and went to boot. The screen stayed a dark black green flashed a couple times and it beeped at me a few time. When it did come up, the screen was really dark, and it came up as trying to fix windows from not booting. Also during this time, the CPU fan was screaming. What's going on here? Did I miss a step?

One problem that has me perplexed . When a customers motherboard goes down , it means reformatting and re-installing XP. Of course all my customer info is gone. If you try to boot up With the new motherboard XP will not load. It launches a critical error and says the boot sector has a virus. I know that XP has this built in to prevent it from being installed on several different computers . This anti-piracy is based upon motherboards bios.

I will not build a computer with pirated software but when the legal owner of the PC and the software needs his computer fixed he should not have to lose all his info. This is when I miss 98 , ME. Under those most computers it was replace motherboard and after several reboots you were all ready to go with all your data intact.

has anybody come up with a work around for this ?

A:When Mother board goes w/XP

What kind of computer are we talking about? According to MS, if you get an OEM motherboard from the manufacturer, with SLP (System-Locked Preinstall) in the BIOS, that's all you need. They don't mention any re-install. Maybe you can sort it out from This Page Is it possible to do a repair install and save the data?

Hi, I found this from the AOpen support page for the AK33
CPU Table

http://club.aopen.com.tw/testreport/mb/cpu_supported.asp?TestFunction=442&Model=305
It's a Socket A board....
Highest I see is an Athlon, T-Bird , or Duron @ 1.4GHZ
And, you would need BIOS Rev. 1.23 or later to support the highest CPUs.
NO XPs at all shown

I mainly use Opera as a primary browser. My mother knows nothing about computers, so I wan't to make sure my Linux Box is safe from any crap! Should I have to protect myself if I am using Linux? Is WOT (Web Of Trust) and AdBlock fine? If not, then could some people give me some tips on making sure my mom can't do something stupid or clicking on an ad that has a drive by download. AND I WILL NOT SWITCH TO ANOTHER BROWSER, I love Opera, It has done me very well on my slow internet (Opera Turbo).

A:Mother going to use computer. Help us all!

First of all, set up a user account for her - I presume you can do this in Linux - then she can use any browser she wants  or prefers without affecting your beloved Opera. Also, with her own account, she cannot affect your own data or work and you can restrict her user privileges if you wish to be that protective.

As for as your mother doing something 'stupid' - well, we are all capable of that !  I have no user experience of the software you mention, but if it works for you, just make sure it is kept up to date. In my experience, and I have a fair bit of it, older users tend to be more cautious than younger ones at least in part because they don't entirely trust either computers or the internet !

I also think you had better hope that your Mum isn't browsing BC !

Hello, and welcome to the forums.

Let's try this version of gmer.

If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.

Click the image to enlarge it

In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ... Sections
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Have an E Machine PC it is not booting up, so, I open up the computer. I saw the CPU fan was not running and the processor was hot. The power supply is good, the fan in power supply is working. I also used a power supply tester.

Was your old CPU a Celeron as well? Same speed?

You may want use the Clear CMOS jumper to clear the BIOS settings or you can pull out the CMOS battery for a few minutes.

Try reseating the RAM and video card as well. Or try a known good piece of RAM and a good video card. You can disconnect all the drives and remove any unneccessary PCI cards like a modem.

Ok lets start with the ic thing I did After changing around a few bits and pieces in the PC i flipped the little red switch on the PSU from V to V Yes a very stupid thing to do although my only defence is that I felt round the back of the PC and flipped what I thought was the isolation switch that I was told was back there somewhere Anyway I saw a small blue flash and now the PC simply will not turn on or show any signs of power Initially I thought it was going to be the PSU PC mother-in-law's Blew up my that Blew up my mother-in-law's PC had blown or a fuse in the PSU or something so I tried another PSU and the PC still shows no signs of life at all I dismantled the PC to look for signs of damage or burning inside and found nothing Upon close inspection of the motherboard I noticed a single capacitor with a domed top near to where the PSU plugs into the motherboard All other capacitors are perfectly flat Blew up my mother-in-law's PC How likely is it that this is the cause of the complete lack of power The computer is rather old anyway and its just a case of figuring out if its worth fixing or buying a new PC Many thanks Will nbsp

A:Blew up my mother-in-law's PC

Older pc's are even more prone to not work with something broken on the motherboard. If you got some type of charge through the board, it could have damaged something that's not visible even at all. If you tried a new psu, sounds like the pc is trash, as far as the motherboard anyway.

A:Need help with the mother of all viruses

Looks like I've solved this by myself. I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, which picked up Kanji_1R.dll in the C:\windows\system32 directory. I already suspected this as a rogue file, but couldn't delete it manually or with delete-on-boot software. Don't know what put it there, but hopefully other virus/malware scanners I ran have already deleted the source virus. Anyway, a whole day of web browsing and no redirections, what a relief.

Hello all.
I am wanting to change out my Mother Board. I currently have a ECS K7s5a pro with an AMD XP 2400 and Two 512mb sticks of pc 2700 ram. Atx form factor. All I have ever worked with is ECS Mobos. I was wanting to venture out and try another manufacturer as I am not that impressed with ECS anymore.
Anyone have any suggestions to any better Mobo manufacturer than ECS.
Thanks

How can I find out what mother board I have?

--maxim

A:Mother board

You can download sisoftsandra from http://www.tweakfiles.com It will identify some motherboards or else the hard way. Look at it and find the manufacturers make and model or the fcc number. The fcc number is generally located right around the dimm slots.

or you can try ctbios, it will read the bios rom's and report what is there. http://www.windrivers.com/identity/mboard/biosid.htm

I was wondering if anyone has any tips on where to get parts to fix/replace a mother board for not too much money? I was informed yesterday that my mother board was shot on my year old gateway laptop. My husband is pretty good with computers and has built our desktops that we've had but he's currently deployed so I have to wait until he returns to fix or attempt to fix my laptop. I live in CT but am more than willing to order parts online. Thank you.

Usually at the bottom of your first screen, after it lists the drives on your system it will say press ... to enter setup. That's the key you need to press. It's probably the "del" key.

Your MoBo uses an amibios, you can enter setup by tapping either Del, F1 or F2 keys on POST or during boot logo.

I want to unplug everything from the existing mother board, remove it, and slide in a new mother board, reconnect everything, boot from the Win XP CD, do a repair and take off running without having to re-install all the application programs.
Will this work, or do I have do do a completely new install of XP and reinstall all the applications?

Hi guys I have been trying to remove a virus for a week now and I'm getting to the point of ripping my hair out I have done virus malware scans from nearly all providers I can find removed about different trojans but I still can't seem Mother all VIrus of to find the source I can slow the virus down but it nearly always seem to be able to repair itself or so it seems Sometime the computer doesn't respond Mother of all VIrus to Mother of all VIrus my commands eg pressing alt ctrl del does nothing clicking on shutdown does nothing and windows wont pop up Other times like now I can do anything relatively hassle free except IE never works Random tabs open up in my browser too I have stripped down my OS vista home to nearly a bare shell but still cant get rid of this bleeping virus EDIT After reading many other threads of people with the same symptoms as my own I decided to run a combofix scan by carefully following your online instructions This seems to have fixed my problem so far My only issue would now be how do I clean my portable drive I don't want to plug it back in because it will infect my PC again It also has all my stuff on it Also I noticed that a fair bit of my PC was infected and after combofix cleaned it I am missing things like sidebar google search box and my audio control program

A:Mother of all VIrus

I am now getting "internet explorer has stopped working" pop up about every 30 secs even though I am not using it. Sometimes followed by "rundl32 has stopped working"

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run ad-aware SE with VX2 add-on cleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy (with updated database) and CWShredder as these programs will clean a lot of the crap out first. All links to programs are in my signature. Ok..on to the log?..

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also. Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Check and fix the following in HijackThis if they still exist (make sure you do not miss an entry)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://puxbzdmxtrcfeoeqspejlhaac.uk...2p5FgcZM24Y.asp
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00E9A97E-885E-7F7E-3CCD-12BA18FA0955} - C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\APPLIC~1\GLOBAL~1\bowsrdr.exe (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [third list program amok] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\64copythirdlist\drv bind.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [MessengerPlusUninstall] C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe /C "C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\MsgPlusUninst.bat"
O9 - Extra button: Research (HKLM

Delete the following Files/Folders in RED (delete folders if no filename is specified or they are RED) according to their directory (If you can't find them...do a search for them?make sure you have search hidden files, folders, sub directorys..ect enabled if it applys to your OS)

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\64copythirdlist\drv bind.exe

Now run Cleanup and reboot/logoff when prompted.

Once done reboot into Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log file to confirm what was removed and if it's clean or not. Once your clean you can enable system restore again.

This is the firt time I have used a forum so I hope I am doing this correctly. I am still new with computers and I installed my first new motherboard today. Every thing went good but I hooked the on off switch wires incorrectly. I think I got it on two + posts. Needless to say I did let some smoke out of the switch box. I have since corrected this but now the computer will not boot up. Did I fry the new motherboard? Any help I can get would greatly be appriciated.

DX48BT2 is the board i'm looking at getting and wonder if i should go with ddr2 or ddr3 Ram how much of a difference is it and is there other types of ram that would to a good job ..wanting it for ultimate gaming

A:Mother board and Ram

DDR3 comes with high clocks but also with price and high latency. So, high quality DDR2 would(COULD in some occasions) still outdo DDR3. To a point, latencies can determine the performance more than clocks.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ5210f with a M2N68-LA (Narra6) motherboard and I also have a old Compaq Presario SR1010NX with a MS-6577 (Giovani, Giovani2) mother board and it seems like the second mother board is better than the first. I would like to know which one is better because I have both computer towers but only use the CQ5210f. I am planning on putting in a new graphics card soon and I cant afford a whole new computer or motherboard right now so I have to pick between these to.

SR1010NX mother board: HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Motherboard Specifications, MS-6577 (Giovani, Giovani2) - c00063244 - HP Business Support Center

A:Which Mother Board is better?

No contest the second one. The first is an ancient (in computer terms) Pentium 4/DDR/AGP based board, whereas the first is a much more recent AMD AM3/DDR3/PCI-E board that the Compaq bios allowing can up to probably the Phenom II x4 965, which will eat that old P4 for breakfast (would eat for lunch and dinner too).
