USB Type-C is still susceptible to its predecessor's flaws

Q: USB Type-C is still susceptible to its predecessor's flaws

It's been years in the making but USB Type-C finally made its grand entrance this past week on Apple's new MacBook and Google's new Chromebook Pixel 2 a day later. While it's great to finally see the successor to modern-day USB,...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I don't get this. How can you infect a 220V wall charger which is just a step-down transformer in it's basic form with a virus? How can such a thing retain any data? It has no AI.

Several IE Flaws Could Add Up to a Big Problem (2 web pages).

A security expert shows how some small flaws could give a hacker access to personal files.

A:Several IE Flaws Could Add Up to a Big Problem

Thanks for the link. These quotes disturb me the most:

Medina has been investigating this type of attack for some time--CORE Security issued an advisory on his first version of this attack in 2008. However, he says, Microsoft has responded by releasing patches that focus only on preventing the browser from actually running the malicious code--the fixes don't stop the attacker from learning about the user's computer, which could, potentially, lead to other attacks. Medina believes the attack could be stopped more effectively by closing down flaws at all points of the chain. "It makes no sense to think about this vector if none of the [string of exploits] are possible," Medina says.

However, "customers running Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8 in their default configuration on Windows Vista or later operating systems are not vulnerable to this issue, as they benefit from Internet Explorer Protected Mode, which protects from this issue," said Jerry Bryant, senior security communications manager lead at Microsoft, in a statement. He added that Microsoft has provided a set of instructions that XP users can implement to protect their computers. He notes, however, that Microsoft has not seen Medina's attack in use in the wild.

Independent security researcher Dino Dai Zovi notes that many Internet Explorer users may not realize that they're surfing the Internet without Protected Mode in place. Dai Zovi explains that users often disable Vista's user account control, a built-in security feature that aims to make users aware of the privileges that applications are exercising, because they find its prompts annoying. What they often don't realize, however, is that doing this also disables Protected Mode Internet Explorer, since it relies on the same underlying mechanism. "Most users would probably want the added security protection that Protected Mode Internet Explorer provides," Dai Zovi says.

*sigh* Of course, hindsight is 20/20 but I'm not sure why an IE security feature would be effectively "bound" to the UAC. I wonder if disabling the UAC in Windows 7 has the same affect on IE's Protected Mode as on Windows Vista.

Peace...

1 March 2007Two flaws were discovered in Windows Vista and Internet Explorer 7.Both were uncovered by FrSIR (French Security Incident Response Team) that rates them as "low risk". The Vista vulnerability is in a component that doesn?t validate user privileges correctly and it allows attacker to steal personal data form PC. It also affects Windows XP, 2000 and Windows Server 2003.The IE7 flaw is caused by errors in handling some "on unload" events. Cybercriminals could use it to trick user into visiting malicious website. The vulnerability is also exploitable in IE6. Microsoft hasn?t published patches yet.Source:http://www.arcabit.com/infobase.html?show=...ion&id=1143

Ready or not, IPv6 is finally visible on the horizon... And researchers are already finding major security problems with it...researchers recently found problems in the IPv6 protocol specification itself, namely in the routing header. Bottom line: The specification lets the sender add an arbitrary number of extra headers on IPv6 packets, and the IPv6-based routers or hosts must process these headers. It's a denial-of-service attacker's dream come true...darkreading.com

Yes, 7 is good but they also should:

1) Tweak WDDM 1.1 for stability and performance - 4.4 for Aero, and 5.5 for gaming graphics?

2) Get rid of the registry

3) Include support for EVERY codec - rmvb, mkv, mp4 etc with thumbnailing that works straight up.

Microsoft won't fix vulnerabilities in the latest versions of Internet Explorer or Windows during its regularly scheduled patch release on Tuesday, meaning users will have to wait at least another month to get updates that correct the security risks.
The software maker on Thursday said January's Patch Tuesday will include a single bulletin that fixes a vulnerability that carries a severity rating of "critical" in Windows 2000 and "low" in all other versions of the operating system. That's one of the slimmest ever offerings since Microsoft began the practice of releasing security fixes on the second Tuesday of every month.

Now I'm a biology major so I have no idea why it's a requirement to take this course with OS systems but I'm currently to write a paper regarding the new security flaws with Vista OS.

Any tips?

I just want a stupid C in the class and carry on! Haha, thanks for any help/direction.

A:Windows Vista Security Flaws

Hello and welcome to TSF. :)

So you're saying that Windows is not 100% secure??

Hmm, not really sure about the current flaws of the OS. I remember that at the end of last year some articles surfaced about the major flaws and some Russian hacker who posted the flaws concerning user accounts and raising their administrative rights leaving Vista open to attacks. And there was something about IE7 and hackers ability to take over your computer. I'm not certain of the details, it was a while ago and I am quite certain that Microsoft fixed those probs.
Some more internal concerns include Vista minimizing the use of administrative rights. There is usually a conflict between making the OS very smooth and easy to use, while also making it secure. The two usually don't go together. Sorry if I am so vague here, but I haven't heared of any Vista's major flaws for a while. I'm sure you could find a few articles about the topic on some academic journals or tech news. If I come across something more I'll post it.

Free Microsoft Program To Battle Spyware Has Some Serious FlawsBy WALTER S. MOSSBERGMicrosoft, whose Windows operating system has been plagued by viruses, spyware and other security problems in recent years, last week began rolling out some free software to help users cope with those threats. The software giant introduced a "beta," or preliminary, version of a free product designed to block, detect and remove spyware. A free antivirus program is planned for later release.Unfortunately, the company's first free security program has some serious flaws and lapses. I've been testing Microsoft's antispyware software, called simply Microsoft AntiSpyware, and I can't recommend it, in its present form, over the leading third-party antispyware program I have favored, Webroot's Spy Sweeper...more can be found at PERSONAL TECHNOLOGY from The Wall Street Journal

Or Something Blocking them , another Addon or Program ?
Or try logins from another PC and see if any issues still arise.

The open-source group shipped Firefox 3.5.4 with patches for the vulnerabilities, which range from code execution risk to the theft of information in the browser?s form history.

.

One of the critical issues affect media libraries introduced in Firefox 3.5 when audio and video capabilities were added.
Here?s the skinny on the high-risk issues in this Mozilla Firefox patch batch:

Security flaws found in the WebGL standard.

Researchers at Context Information Security have issued a warning about the WebGL standard. The warning states that this standard has the potential to undermine the security concepts that are practiced by current operating system versions and provide a new set of opportunities for attacks on a variety of system.
The flaw could also, according to the researchers, be used to not just create the blue screen of death, but to inject malicious code onto the system.

A:Security flaws found in the WebGL standard

I saw this reported on the 'H' site with an interesting/amusing follow up suggesting that the researchers here are involved in a Microsoft inspired FUD campaign to protect their interests!; http://www.h-online.com/security/news/item/WebGL-as-a-security-problem-1240567.html

I doubt that the onboard graphics in this old XP box have much, if any, 3D capability but, in the interests of research, I've disabled WebGL in Firefox and nothing nasty has happened yet. Apparently, IE and Opera don't support WebGL (although future versions of Opera will) so there's nothing else I need do to 'protect' myself (always assuming there is something serious enough to protect against!)

LENOVO HAS issued an official response to a security researcher's claim that the company is shipping more bad software with its hardware.
Lenovo has accepted the problem and shunted it onto another party. But we are getting ahead of ourselves here.
The problem, according to a security researcher called Dymtro Oleksiuk, is that Lenovo is shipping a flaw that undermines Windows security protocols.

Oleksiuk has posted details of the Lenovo ThinkPad System Management Mode flaw on GitHub, and has published a blog about his work.
"The new 0day vulnerability in Lenovo firmware allows arbitrary SMM code execution on a wide range of Lenovo models and firmware versions including the most recent ones," he said.
"Exploitation of the vulnerability may lead to the flash write protection bypass, disabling of UEFI Secure Boot, Virtual Secure Mode and Credential Guard bypass in Windows 10 Enterprise and other evil things."

Google security researcher Tavis Ormandy has unearthed a slew of critical vulnerabilities, including many remote code execution flaws, in Symantec and Norton enterprise and consumer AV products.

The flaws affect the core engine deployed in the products and are, according to Ormandy, ?as bad as it gets.?

?They don?t require any user interaction, they affect the default configuration, and the software runs at the highest privilege levels possible. In certain cases on Windows, vulnerable code is even loaded into the kernel, resulting in remote kernel memory corruption,? he noted.

The latter is possible because Symantec runs executable file unpackers directly in the kernel.

One of the vulnerabilities (CVE-2016-2208), a trivial buffer overflow, can lead to kernel memory corruption on Windows machines, and can be triggered by the victim simply receiving (and not opening) a specially crafted file or link via email.

"We are seeing a spike in traffic on port 2967 with activity only in the .edu domain," the security company said. "The impact of the attack is minimal thus far."This Spybot variant attempts to break into computers through a six-month-old vulnerability in Symantec Client Security and Symantec AntiVirus. A:is Folder Lock and its encryptionreally secure? Apparently it has major flaws..

ok.. so I'm looking more closely at the video and how folder lock works and i realized in the video the person simply locked the my documents folder using the lock option in folder lock.. it appears its just a basic lock feature offered by folder lock to lock a folder or file but apparently its not the most secure because if you uninstall folder lock the lock feature dissapears with the program and the folder that was locked becomes visible/accessible again..  Folder lock also contains a feature which actually encrypts the folder or file and I would think that is actually fully secure, i hope?

A trifecta of vulnerabilities has been found in software preinstalled on a number of Dell, Toshiba, and Lenovo consumer and enterprise PCs and tablets, affecting millions of users.

A user can be tricked into opening a specially-crafted web page, either as a drive-by download or through an email attachment, which could allow an attacker to exploit the flaw.

The security researcher, known as slipstream/RoL, confirmed to ZDNet that he did not inform Dell, Toshiba, and Lenovo of the flaws before the the proof-of-concept code was posted online.

An advisory, posted by Carnegie Mellon University's public vulnerability database (CERT) on Thursday, said preinstalled Lenovo software ( often known as "bloatware" ) includes three vulnerabilities.

I wonder if that means that the consentUI is not working as intended? If I understand correctly, the consentUI only passes over the admin token after that 'continue' prompt. So, if this report says that vulnerabilities are mitigated by not using an admin account, doesn't that imply that somehow when exploiting the vulnerabilities, the admin rights are used.

so a few years back i read a magazine that said to change the type of computer in device manager to standard pc because it made the computer run a little better or faster so now i ve got my laptop and i ve noticed it type type device in manager! can't computer back original to change getting slower and thought that i would can't change computer type back to original type in device manager! do this VERY BAD MOVE i can still boot windows and everything - it meant that i had to let the computer reinstall all of can't change computer type back to original type in device manager! the drivers for my hardware - but i have noticed in the device manager now that there are two instances of standard pc there is also a new section titled other devices with about devices that seem to have no driver for them - some mention ISA so i am guessing that changing to standard pc means that windows thinks my laptop is now a desktop pc with ISA slots i find that when i put my laptop lid down the thing shuts down when i press the power button it turns off straight away doesn t even shut down i had had the laptop configured for ages to do nothing when i closed the lid and give me shut down options when i pressed the power button i look in power options and i can only cinfigure the monitor screen and hard disk power off options - every other option is not available when i do bring up the shut down options i can no longer choose standby i have also realised that i can not turn on my wireless connection - i ve tried all sorts to get it to work with no avail the laptop is an acer ferrari and when i call up the manager app it says that bluetooth and wireless are not present by the way i can still get the bluetooth button to work - correction - it starts up with the button on but if i turn it off it won t let me turn it on again the emanager and presentation manager buttons on the laptops casing don t work either i have to access them via software route my questions are is it possible that something is going on with the acer part of my system - with regards to the buttons and also the wireless and bluetooth can i change my computer type back to acpi uniprocessor pc yes it is compatible and will this solve all of my power option limitations other device entries have i got any of my suspicions right and is there anything i ve missed by the way - i really really really don t want to reinstall windows xp all over again because it has taken me about months and COUNTLESS hours to customise my system to a T i was hoping to get it perfect and then backup an image so i have a better starting block in the future if i reinstall the system i haven t got the windows install discs on me because they are at another location far away and i can t get them very easily at all - i do have an image to reinstall from however but it would take forever to recustomise everything again every bit of help is a life saver - thank you in advance even ideas are appreciated Steve nbsp

I set up an Outlook account on a new-to-me laptop I had been Is device? default type type of deteremined email by account unable to download email for several months since I didn't have a computer I had been saving the emails I wanted to keep and had planned on downloading them into my new computer After setting up the account it appeared the system automatically downloaded Is default email account type deteremined by type of device? all of my email from the server I know this is default behavior which I turn off So I went through that process double-checked to see that all the email was downloaded and went out to my server I discovered that what I thought were copies of the emails were left on the servier I didn't want that to happen I dug around to find the location that I have used many times to do this and couldn't remember or find the location to make this change So I came to Seven Forums I saw the step-by-step instructions go to the account select it click change click advanced and uncheck the box that says quot Leave a copy of email on server quot When I went to the advanced dialog box for changing accounts I discovered there wasn't any such box I dug around some more decided to subscribe here and ask why mine was different In the mean time since all the email was downloaded to my computer I went back out to my server deleted all the email and purged the trash Then I went back to my Oullook and discovered all the email that I had quot downloaded quot was gone After digging some more and callling my ISP service desk I discovered that I had set up an IMAP account rather than a POP account There was no place to change this in this account so I deleted the account and went through the process again When I got to the account type the only types showing were IMAP and exchange There may have been another option but the important thing is that POP was not one of the options Down at the bottom of the screen was a checkbox to allow custom set up I checked that and discovered there the POP choice I clicked that and the account behaved as I want deleting copies of emails from the server as they are actually downloaded I have set up several Outlook accounts on various computers before This is the first time I have ever had this happen I have never seen the IMAP as a default before but this is also the first time I have installed it on a laptop Was it this way BECAUSE I was adding the account on a laptop There was another account on the computer which I deleted and it was a POP account so it wasn't some sort of previous setting that just followed over All I know for sure is that having this as default cost me a bunch of time and effort and some extremely important emails Any feedback besides quot Pay closer attention to what your various screens say when you are setting up an account dummy quot

A:Is default email account type deteremined by type of device?

Hello Hagridore and Welcome to Seven Forums!

No, I don't believe the problem is because it is a Laptop.
Email can be very confusing to setup with the different protocols such as POP3, IMAP, and MAPI.

Referring to "Outlook" can be confusing, as it can mean different things.
Outlook may mean the MS Office Outlook client email program, or an Outlook.com email address.
MS has created confusion here imho.
When you say "Outlook accounts" do you mean email accounts in the Outlook client program, or Outlook.com email address's, or both ?
What email client program are you using, such as MS Office Outlook, MS Windows Live Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird, ... ?
Also fwiw, for WEB (online) access, Hotmail accounts are being converted to the outlook "WEB format" now...just to make it more fun

From what I know, setting up an Outlook.com (or Hotmail) email address with IMAP does not work without a 3rd party paid solution.
MS uses their own proprietary MAPI protocol (or POP3) for hotmail/outlook email address's accessed in a client program.
If it is possible to use an Outlook(Hotmail) email account with IMAP in a client email program, I would like to know how!

When I delete a POP account (Windows Live Mail) I get a warning about messages that might be lost...
Did you get a warning message when you deleted the POP account?

edit:
I just looked at this again, and see it's in the Office forum.
So, can I assume you are using MS Office Outlook on all the PC's?
If so, what version(s)?
Also, who is the email provider such as Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, MS, ...?

My PC's been running wierd for about a week now and in that time numerous infections have been found, quarantined and removed. Last virus scan came back clear 'hooray!'... or so i thought...I use AVG free 8.5 and within the space of 45 mins i have received two seperate threat alerts. The first one was exploit phoenix exploit kit type 1112and the second one was exploit rogue scanner type 1148 The next step was unplugging it and drop kicking it out the window until these threat alerts popped up as it proves the machine is still under the influence of something. Can someone please advise me on the 'whats', 'hows' and 'whens' to restore my PC back to how it should be?Many much thanks in advance!

Re the new usb type C and usb version 3.1 I get that the type is the physical connector, and that the 3.1 is the latest standard a port could utilize. What I don't get is the type A to type C connector cables. This is fine for connecting backward to 2.0 , or 3.0 etc. But how can a type A port (and connector) support all the features of 3.1 ? All my reading (dozens of discussions) have not said anything about this. It seems 3.1 requires a lot of wires, more than a Type A connector/port has, is that true, meaning Type A cannot carry full 3.1 features. Or in other words, no Type A port will ever support full 3.1?

Well, at first glance this seems to be a hardware issue and not a software issue. Something is 'firing', perhaps the keyboard, perhaps the mousepad or buttons. Don't know. But the fact that your scans come up clean kind of confirms this also. Are you using a mouse with this laptop? A wireless mouse perhaps? Disconnect the mouse if that is the case. See if the problems go away.EDIT: I almost forgot: Welcome to BC!

I am tired of all the pop up ads I get. Is there a way for me to protect my computer from all of this. I am hoping to change my MAC address or ISP address without having to reinstall. I have a pop up killer, but when I am playing games (i.e the ones that take the whole screen) the ads will still either mess with my color or bring me out of the game so I have to toggle back into the game.

To tell the truth I am not sure really what I am looking for, but any help would be much appreiciated.
In just the last half hour the Pop-up killer has killed 35 ads. I am desperate!

PLEASE HELP!!

I want to buy more RAM. When I started to look on line I found out that there are tons of different types of RAM.

My PC specs...
Dell Dimension 2350
Windows XP Home Edition
Pentium 4 @ 2.20GHz w/ 512K L2 Cache
128MB DDR SDRAM @ 266MHz

I have been told that 184-pin DIMM modules are compatible with my system. (??)

When I looked on line to find my type of RAM (some websites had a select type of PC to ensure correct RAM options) I saw too many options.....

For example ..
128 or 256 or 512 MB SDRAM ECC DIMM
128 or 256 or 512 MB SDRAM DIMM
128 or 256 or 512 MB SDRAM 10ns DIMM
128 or 256 or 512 MB SDRAM SO DIMM ( i feel so dimm!!!)

can anyone help?
I just want the right kind of ram for my PC.

Anyone know a good place to buy? I have looked at several sites and prices average $32=128mb $54=256mb $95=512mb
Thanks

I feel really stupid asking this but here goes.

When i bought my computer it had 258 megs or ram. It had one possible slot for upgrading. We took an extra stick of 128 and stuck that in. Since then ive lost the box, and have no idea what kind it is(ex. DDR, SDRAM). Im wondering if theres any way for me to find out. I cant go back to the site i got it at to see the specs because they discontinued it there(bought in august). I really would like to upgrade to 512, but i need to know what kind it is and dont know how to tell. Is it something to do with the notches on the sticks?

I did a series of updates from the windows update site, letting them automatically screen and update. Now I can't type anything on an IE web page. I can't sign into games, can't get mail, can't even post in forums like this one I have to do it on a borrowed computer. I can type/click on the address bar and run any non-web based programs normally. Did my Java get hosed? Any suggestions would be most welcome, thanks

Hi,

I have 2 pc's, and I recently bought some RAM for them.

One is new and the other is about 3 years old.

The RAM I bought will only fit into the new machine.

The RAM that fits into the new machine is DDR 512mb pc2700.

Can anyone tell me what different types of RAM there are, how to tell the differrence, and what type is most likely to fit into an older machine.

And can you explain how I can make sure it is the correct type as the place I am buying it from will not take returns on RAM.

Thanks.

Hi, I'm trying to firgure out what type of RAm is compatable with my Dell Dimension 8200 Series - (400 MHz Front Side Bus) as am looking to apgrade from 512 to 1024. (Stupid game can eat up to 600 by itself I've heard.) Anyway I looking up the suggested RAM on the dell website and they directed me to this:

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...refurbished=&c=us&l=en&cs=19&iCompatid=121448

That's a bit to expencive for me so I am looking for a cheaper (but still good quality) atlernative. How wouild I figire out what other brands of RAm would work? (If they would work.) Thanks
