IE11 Enterprise Site List Manager XML file setup - HTTP, Local Network, or Local File

Q: IE11 Enterprise Site List Manager XML file setup - HTTP, Local Network, or Local File

Hello I'm currently in the process of testing deploying IE in setup XML - file File Local Enterprise Local List Network, IE11 Manager or HTTP, Site our environment and I've begun testing on the IE Enterprise Site List manager I've read that there are a few different ways to configure the XML file to apply via GPO IE11 Enterprise Site List Manager XML file setup - HTTP, Local Network, or Local File per the article below nbsp HTTP Local Network Local File https technet microsoft com en-us library Dn aspx In my isolated testing I've chosen to use the local file method which is very easy to setup and use on a testing machine It looks like we have the flexibility to choose how we apply the XML file and I was curious what the best options are and why nbsp Also are there examples of each setup being used and the benefits downsides to each Here's the options that I can see using HTTP - setup an IIS website to host the XML file Local Network UNC - setup a UNC path on our DFS where we store the current XML file and users would have read only access to that location Local File - We could just deploy the XML file via SCCM package application when updates to the list are required Could anyone please point me towards some articles etc explaining the pro's and cons of these methods and why I might want to choose one over the other nbsp I'm leaning towards just using a DFS share and option because it doesn't require us to maintain an IIS site for it but I am curious to hear if there might be any downsides to this method or benefits to going with another method Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

We host out site list for enterprise mode (IE 11) on an HTTPS site. but i can't seem to figure out where the file gets cached on the workstations. basically when i am troubleshooting i want to be able to open the cached sitelist.xml and see the contents.
Does anyone know where the locall cache for the sitelist.xml is stored on the client PC's? (windows 7).

I am trying to enable the Enterprise Mode(IE7 Document Mode) for some of sites using
Microsoft Enterprise Mode Site List Manager tool. Saved site list in a XML file which will have site list and selected mode. Placed in a shared location and updated the group policy but when I open the specified sites they are not
opening in EM mode turned ON.
Truned on GPO settings of IE Enterprise mode
The registry keys in HKLM and HKCU are updated. GPO is updated. But EM mode is not ON.

I've configured the Enterprise Mode site list as directed in the following article
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn640696.aspx
and set up the gpo to point to my site.  I've confirmed in my site's logs that the xml file is accessible.
However, it isn't working; none of the sites are launching in enterprise mode.  I notice that the CurrentVersion key in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\EnterpriseMode has remained at 1 and is not updating.  I'm assuming that is the
problem, but I can't figure out why it won't update.
Any advice?

We have a dedicated IE11 Enterprise Mode server hosting the site list xml file and it's all working nicely. If there's ever a problem with the server/connectivity etc the browser has the last version cached.

My question is where is the site list cached and is it per user or computer?

The reason I need to know is that we have a Citrix environment we are upgrading to IE11 and want to know if we cache the latest when creating the vdisk, will it be cached for all users or will they always download a new copy with all the bandwidth it will
entail?
Thanks,
Jon

We were using the Site List Manager for a few months and it was working OK.  Now that the admin workstation is Windows 10, we downloaded the new Windows 10 version, bulk added the sites from the xml file and then resaved the XML file.
The new format does not work, even for Windows 10 systems.  We had to restore a backup copy of the old v1 XML file and use the old site list manager to keep the original XML formatting.
What do we have to change on the workstations to make the new xml format recognized and will it IE 11 on Windows 7 and 8.1 systems recognize this new format?

We are using the afore mentioned software and have an odd issue.
A lot of times when we add a site to the list and the export  to the XML the rules Ver will not update or it reverts to an older # and we have to select ?file,
save to XML? several times to get the Ver to update correctly. Example below.
Is there a fix for this?  OIr is it just a ?feature?
We would expect that when we add the site and save it and then export it to the XML file that it will increment every time we add a new site?
No?

I am looking for a good method for maintaining multiple site lists when using the EM site list manager. Right now I maintain four domains each with a custom site list and using the EM
console is clunky for this. It is designed more for a single domain and site list. There is the import/export feature but that isn?t easy to switch between lists and I am concerned about making a mistake. It would be ideal if the console could handle multiple
lists or profiles by viewing them in tabs or something. Has anyone found a good way to manage different site lists?

Is there a command prompt command to run a file within a network? Such as shutdown -i [localip] etc..

A:Run a file within a local network

One does not "run a file". Open can "open" a file, but that's executing an application and telling it to open that file.

Perhaps if you were more specific about what you mean.

Does it matter where I put the Enterprise Mode Site List Manager? Does it need to stay there?
I thought it wouldn't matter, and that I would just use it to generate an XML file.  Looking at the XML file, I'm not so sure any more.
I've added one site so far, just to test.  Looking at the XML file I have a domain exclude and path exclude, but I don't see any information in them to denote what kind of emulation or document mode to use.  Is the system going elsewhere for this
information?

Obfuscating the IP address is pretty pointless. Your lan is using private IP addresses that are not routable to the Internet.

Regardless of that, it looks like you are trying to access the administrative share of the server. Administrative shares are accessed using a dollar sign.

Any one else faced with this prospect?

Yesterday I brought my new quad pro Windows Vista 64 machine home only to find out, it couldn't see any of the other computers on my network.

I've been using Windows XP print and file sharing up until now. It would connect all my machines including an iMac. The only exception was Fedora, a variant of Linux.

I was just wondering if any of you had experience connecting various OS's to a LAN. I don't want to do anything complicated, just print and file sharing.

I found this reference, but just wondered what any of the rest of you might be doing.

We are using Group Policy to issue an XML file with a list of sites for IE 11 to load in Enterprise mode.  We added our payroll company site because they were not compatible with IE 11, now they are ONLY compatible with IE 11.  I removed their
URL from the XML list over a week ago, but all company computers are still loading it in Enterprise mode.  I can have everyone turn it off manually, but the problem is they use so many subdomains that everyone would have to do it numerous times.  Why
is that happening?  I need to force this site and its subdomains to NOT load in Enterprise Mode.  It seems that when the URL was removed from the XML list it no longer forced it, but it also did not remove that setting.

A:Removing a site from Enterprise Model XML list for IE 11 does not disable enterprise mode for that site

Hi,
No event error doesn't indicate the policy is applied fine. If the new configuration didn't work, the most probably reason was the group policy was not applied.
You could rest your Internet Explorer 11 and then restart the compute to check the result.
If it still doesn't work, run "gpresult /h gpreport.html" command to saves the report in HTML format with the file name "gpreport.html" at C:\Windows\System32\ directory.
Open this file to check if this group policy was applied successfully. Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help, and unmark the answers if they provide no help. If you have feedback for TechNet Support, contact [email protected]

I'm currently having an issue in which Remote Desktop Connection Manager doesn't list the local printer, but Remote Desktop Connection does.
The reason I'm using Remote Desktop Connection Manager is that my display is a 4k display and it scales properly on it compared to RDC which everything is tiny.

Hi Everyone,

We have successfully deployed Enterprise mode for IE11 on Windows 7 machines using group policy and pointing it an UNC path. However, when we try to add new URLs to the file and try to save it, we get an error saying the file is being used. There
are always active connections to that file.

To get it to work, we need to stop sharing the file, write to the file and start the sharing again.

Is this how we manage the file? I am sure there must be a better way than stop sharing the file. Can someone please help us with this?

Thanks

Hello everyone,

I have a bat file that is launched when a torrent finishes downloading on my laptop which launched robocopy to copy it to my server computer.

I want to have the server run a few programs to extract the file and move it to the correct directory structure.

I want to launch a bat file on the server from the first bat file using the call command, however I am not sure if this command will cause my server to execute the bat or my laptop to execute the bat.

Is there a way to get my server to run the bat from the bat that is run on my laptop?

I think that if I use the call command that it will run the called bat on my laptop even though the bat is located on my server.

Thanks in advance
-S

A:Starting a bat file on networked computer from local bat file question

Your exactly correct that the batch file will run on your laptop. The only way to run from the server is to use Remote desktop RDP from your machine to the server which will allow you to run the program in the server's memory.
Or, you could have a planned event (Task Manager) on your server which would check to see if the file exists at some point in time and then run the batch program in the servers memory space.

ok, this is a little weird and hard to explain but...
i have this in my hosts file:

127.0.0.1 localhost

127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net

so now i am never bothered with double click ads
but now when a page loads with a box that should be a dc ad instead i get a
"page cannot be displayed" box - not fun to look at

what i want to get the hosts file to do is look up and display a picture from my pc.
Something like "get double click ad here: 127.0.0.1\C:\windows\funnypicture.jpg"

can this be done?

A:how to get Hosts file to display local file?

If you getting a pop-up on what sites you blocking in your hosts file I am guessing your using netscape.

You can get eDexter and you will not get the pop-up box telling you want was blocked because it could not load the page. Plus it will speed up the page load.

http://accs-net.com/hosts/eDexter.html

Special Note for Netscape users:

eDexter will also eliminate the "hang" problem with Netscape. If you use Netscape, it will keep waiting for a response from the blocked servers in your hosts file longer than it should - which will delay the page loading. eDexter will prevent that by pretending to be the server that has been blocked and will "talk" to Netscape for it. Internet Explorer 5 and up does not usually exhibit this problem, but you can still benefit from eDexter's other uses. Click to expand...

As the title states, we're having issues with the our sites.xml file being locked somehow, preventing anyone from actually editing the file to make changes. The file is located on a network share, and we've nearly exhaust efforts in attempting to figure
out what exactly is locking this file. It's not the virus scanner, and it doesn't appear to be the clients (nothing is attempting to open the file with write access, as far as we can tell).

HI All,
We have set up three users in a home network where one person holds all the files on their PC and that folder is shared for access to everyone.  It is a remote location so no need to have it too locked down.  I haven't created a homegroup but can
if that changes things.  the issue is that at the moment two people can open the same file at the same time without any message about the file already being in use - then the rule of "last person to save the file" wins.  Is there any way
- by settings on the PC, or by using homegroup instead, or by using a third party tool - to prevent this from happening?
Thanks,

I setup a GPO that uses a global sites list for enterprise mode for our domain.  The first time we all launched IE it went and got the list and everything looks good.  Since then I've added 3 extra sites to the enterprise sites list, but none
of the clients seem like they are re-checking the list to see if its been updated because the new sites I added aren't showing up in enterprise mode, only the original ones I first added.  If I open the sites list it shows the xml version is still 1 but
the rules version is 4.  I read online the browser doesn't check for a new sites list until 65 seconds after its been open, but its been like 7 hours and it still hasn't updated.  Anything I could check?  Thanks

Hello,
We're using Enterprise Mode to have some sites load correctly now that we've finally updated to IE11.  But we're having an issue testing sites trying to figure out if the page is loading correctly based on XML file.  I know if I chose IE7 or 8
Enterprise mode the icon on the address bar will change to two buildings (that's what it looks like to me).  But if I select IE5-11 document mode, the icon does not change.  How do I tell if browser is downloading the XML file and loading the page
to the mode set on XML if I choose document mode option, regardless of which version?  Also where does Windows cache the XML file locally?
Thank you,

hello.

i know there are a ton of "undelete" type utilities out there-- and some of them actually work-- surprisingly. but what of the situation when a file was overwritten? is there anything out there that might help me to recover that file which i FTP'd an older version over-top of?

thanks!

A:accidentally FTP'd over local file

The same recovery utilities. Chances are that the new file was not written to the drive in the same place as the old. The files don't really "replace" one another in space and time. The name of the first is just removed.

Free recovery applications:

1) DriveRescue
2) PCI File Recovery
3) Restoration
4) Free Undelete (NTFS only)
5) EasyRecovery Pro

I found a couple of hundred of these files.
Since they are Temp. how can I clean them up?
Where are they used for?

A:Local State.TMP in google Chrome file

Is this a portable version of Chrome? The Local State files store your Chrome settings including extensions, etc. You shouldn't have many of this file. Suggest you list the files by date, and you can safely delete all but the latest one. You can actually delete them all, but chrome does use that file. A Guy

File History works best with external drives or network locations. If your external drive is not recognized, create an empty folder called "File History" (without the quotes) in the root directory of the external drive you want to use. Try again if it is showing up now.

Hi there System 7 Demigods,

So I'm in my email where a buddy sent me a word doc as an attachment that I modified, hit save, and saved to Lord Knows Where....

The address when I retrace my steps (ever so cautiously) is:

<<Users>Name>AppData>Local>Temp

Now I can see the Word file but can't find out how to open it so I can send it back to my buddy. Wahhhh!

It looks like the file is hidden because as I open up explorer and go down the list I can get to Users, then Name, then there is NO AppData file or folder to open. Bloody Microsoft Weenies!!!

How do you open AppData, and then >Local, then >Temp.

Oh yeah, the word doc is saved as a "Rich Text Format" if that helps.

Your kind advice gratefully accepted... Thanks all.

"c:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" a -sfx "%%X.exe" "%%X\"

When I try to open a local html file (either by right clicking on it and opening with IE, or by loading IE and then dragging and dropping a file onto it), IE immediately crashes.

Specifically, it will come up with the crash popup window "Internet Explorer has stopped working". You click "Close the program" and it does it a second time (which is normal behaviour for how IE will try only twice, to avoid an infinite loop), and then you end up still in IE on that page that says "We were unable to return you to the page you were viewing."

It is not an issue with the code or content of the html file. Even a file that just says "hello" in it will crash this way.

How do I add a restriction to the local security policy through a batch file (or a registry key, any method that I can script using batch/python is good)? I'm trying to add a restriction that disallows a path, but I plan to be doing it on quite a few computers that don't share a group policy, so a batch file or other script would be really handy. Thanks!

EDIT: Most of the computers are XP, so I posted this here, but would the same steps still apply to Vista?

first off i'll say i don't know the answer to your question.

but i would look at powershell.

i'm pretty sure you can't batch script security policy. registry is easy if you know the key(s) you need, so you could batch .reg files.

Under C:\Users\<username>\AppData, there are three folders.

Local
LocalLow
Roaming

Then under Local, there's Local\VirtualStore

What are the factors and considerations that Windows 7 uses when it determines and allocates a particular file/folder to one of the three main folders?

A:When does a file/folder go to AppData\ Local, LocalLow and Roaming?

Windows uses the Local and LocalLow folders for application data that does not roam with the user. Usually this data is either machine specific or too large to roam. The AppData\Local folder in Windows 7 is the same as the Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data folder in Windows XP.

Windows uses the Roaming folder for application specific data, such as custom dictionaries, which are machine independent and should roam with the user profile. The AppData\Roaming folder in Windows 7 is the same as the Documents and Settings\username\Application Data folder in Windows XP.

I have 2 computers in different offices both with broadband. A program on computer a needs to access a datafile in realtime(accounting data). How can I set this up to be fast so it doesn't act like it accessing data remotely?

I have tried Ibackupdrive( a virtual internet drive) and Hamachi but both seem too slow, 2-5 seconds latency. Using Gotomypc or Logmein, I can access the data in less than a second.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi
Using Windows XP Home.
I am logged on as the administrator, as usual.
Recently, I can't find the "Local Settings" folder in its usual place, that is, in C:\Documents and Settings\my name\ (where I could always see it before now).
However, I can find it by using Search in Windows Explorer, and can then open the folder, and sub-folders and files from there.
Can anyone explain why the folder doesn't show in the normal Explorer view, and how I can get it back?
Thank you
Robin Oram

The process seemed simple enough, but importing downloaded mbox file only gave empty subdirectories in the Local folder and no email records and no email content and no account-like set of directories shown.  No error messages.  I cannot imagine having done anything wrong.

The last 4 or 5 days I've been getting the attached message from NOD32. Finally got round to looking at it this morning. When I try to delete the file, NOD32 comes up "Error when deleting".

I did a search for the fie on my hard drive and I found it, but again when trying to delete straight from the source folder it it said "file not found".

I should have thought to have done a screen print of the properties box but I didn't. However, looking at the location - appdata/local/...8EE38d01 it appears this is a Firefox profile file.

Ever since it's shown up I seem to be having problems with the wifi on the laptop, I don't know if this is causing it or whether that's a new problem entirely!

Thought I'd drop a post here in case anyone's come across this before.

wittykitty,

You can get rid of it by using Windows Defender Offline.
Windows Defender Offline runs without Win 7 running.

Follow this procedure:
HOW TO USE WINDOWS DEFENDER OFFLINE ON A USB STICK
Windows Defender Offline
? is a free standalone, bootable malware and virus remover from Microsoft.
? performs an offline scan of an infected PC to remove viruses, rootkits and other advanced malware.

Download Windows Defender Offline (about 764 kB)

You will have the choice of downloading the 32bit version (x86) or the 64 bit version (x64).
The link will help you determine whether you are running a 32 bit version or 64 bit version of Windows

NOTE!! You can download and prepare a 32 bit version using a 64 bit version of Windows
NOTE!! You can download and prepare a 64 bit version using a 32bit version of Windows.

You run the 32 bit version on a 32 bit version of Windows.
You run the 64 bit version on a 64 bit version of Windows.

The 32 bit download file name is: mssstool32.exe
The 64 bit download file name is: mssstool64.exe

For the curious, this program was originally name Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper.

INSTALLATION:
You will need an Internet Connection.
Insert 512 mB (Microsoft?s 256 mB is no longer accurate) or larger USB stick into a usb port.
Run the downloaded program--mssstool64.exe or mssstool32.exe
NEXT button
Choose the option On a USB flash drive that is not password protected
NEXT button
NEXT button
.
The install program will format the usb stick using the NTFS format.
The install program will download about 210 mB.
The install program will name the USB stick WDO_Media32 or WDO_Media64
The WDO_Media32 usb stick will have used space of 255 mB (268,140,544 bytes)
The WDO_Media64 usb stick will have used space of 282 mB (296,165,376 bytes)
You can expect the number of mB to increase as more malware appears.

UPDATE Windows Defender Offline USB stick:
? reinsert the usb stick
? run the installation program, mssstool64.exe or mssstool32.exe, again.
? the update will download about 66 mB (mssstool32.exe) and 68 mB (mssstool64.exe).

Since the malware database is sometimes updated several times in a day, always update before running.

PERFORM AN OFFLINE SCAN
Bootup your computer from the USB stick
Windows Defender Offline will automatically perform a quick scan.
After the quick scan finishes, Choose Full Scan
Select all of your drives

The initial, full scan can easily take several hours, but
Remember, your computer is being very thoroughly checked for all types of malware.

RESULTS OF THE SCAN
The results will be in 4 log files on your computer's disk in:
\Windows\Microsoft Antimalware\Support

A:Owner/Local Settings/Temp Folder - Unknown File

Some files are locked by the operating system or locked by running programs during use for protection, so scanners cannot access them. Files that are located in password-protected archives may also be locked or denied access. When the scanner finds such a file, it makes a note and then just skips to the next one. That explains why it shows as "skipped" or "Access Denied" in some anti-virus or anti-malware log scan reports. Similarly, when attempting to delete such a file manually, you may receive a message indicating it is in use or a warning that it is a protected. For more information about this, please refer to How to Delete/Rename a Stubborn File. Several utilities are suggested for dealing with stubborn files to include Unlocker. Please download Unlocker and save to your desktop.Choose the default installation folder C:\Programs Files\Unlocker, click "Next" then click "Install" and reboot when finished.Navigate to the file or folder you want to delete.Right-click on it and select "Unlocker" from the menu.If the folder or file is locked, a window listing of lockers will open.Click to highlight the file path and choose "Unlock all". (make sure "no action" is chosen in the program)After you unlock it, right-click on the file and choose delete.Note: When you are unsure about a suspicious or unknown file, you can rename it by adding .vir after the file's extension (i.e. badfile.dll.vir). If you receive an alert from Windows about renaming, just ignore it. I prefer renaming instead of deleting as deletion leaves you with no option to restore if the file is later found to be legitimate. Taking no action exposes you to risk if the file is not legitimate.

On another computer it happened that after a crash all share and access right information was lost and I had to re-configure it all manually again. This is annoying.

In particular I have setup share names for approx 12 different folders and changed access rights for them
(e.g. remove "Everyone read access" and assign "read-write access for user AAA").

Can I easily(!) save/backup this info somehow to a file so that I could later just double click on it to re-apply this?

This backup file could be a simple generated *.batch file which contains something like

net share mysharename123=E:\logs\2012 /GRANT:AAA,FULL

lines for all of my customized directories. Default Win 7 shares and rights can be omitted.

Alternatively can I extract this easily from Registry (where exactly)?

Is there an easy solution for that?

Peter

A:Can I backup current local shares info (generate *.bat file)?

Code:
net share MyShareName="C:\My Local Path\SomeFolder" /GRANT:Everyone,FULL /PERSISTANT:YES
As far as security goes, the best-practice is to do as above, grant the Everyone group full control on the share, and then manage the permissions on the files and folders themselves. This is because the share permissions are a restriction filter over top of the actual file and folder permissions.
-------
Such info won't dissappear after a crash. Never saw that happening

Does anyone know if the site list for enterprise mode is affected by offline files or having IE set to check for newer versions of web pages automatically (when the sitelist.xml is hosted on an HTTP server)?

My organization relies on a public safety program that will only work with IE8/9. I tried Enterprise Mode but it appears that it doesn't work with files that are on the hard drive. I did verify that it worked by adding whatsmybrowser.org to the
list and it reported the browser as IE8. Each computer that this goes on has a unique ID so this isn't something we could put on the web or intranet. Is it possible to point to a local folder that contains the *htm files?

We have deployed IE via IEAK and have a proxy set which currently set to return direct for all sites This means IE is seeing all external sites in the intranet zone due to the setting 'include all sites that bypass the proxy server' being enabled If I manually untick this then everything works as all external sites are in the internet zone and the setting is registry local keys IE11 launch on intranet resets permanent However I need to deploy this setting site wide and the group policy quot Windows Components Internet Explorer Internet Control Panel Security Page - Intranet Sites Include all sites that bypass the proxy server quot both computer and user set to disable only greys out the box unticked but does IE11 resets local intranet registry keys on launch not actually move external sites into the internet zone I've tried using GPP to delete the registry key HKCU SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Internet Settings ZoneMap Proxybypass which does work but as soon as I re-launch IE the setting is written back with the value and it is back in the wrong state again Using process monitor I can see it is IE11 resets local intranet registry keys on launch iexplore exe that sets this key back to on launch and when I manually untick the box all it does it delete the Proxybypass key and nothing else Has anyone seen this before and managed to work around it nbsp It seems very similar to https social technet microsoft com Forums ie en-US bc a ca-ccad- - a - c starting-ie -changes-zonemap-settings-second-thread forum ieitprocurrentver

A:Networked File stored in local cache whereas it doesnt exist anymore.

Perhaps Process Explorer (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/.../bb896653.aspx) will help you locate it.

Has anyone hosted the enterprise mode site list on a DFS share? We had some issues with HTTP, but figured out that hosting on a UNC path was more reliable. was wondering if DFS would be an option.

Hello,
We have slightly unique URL that is accessed in multiple instances throughout our company. I would like to avoid having to add the URL 200 + times into the enterprise site list to run in IE mode but it doesn't seem
to allow a variable. Does anyone know how I could accomplish that? Below is the example I am working on.
Thanks,

Tony

We have a legacy application that requires IE8 to function correctly.  It generates htm files locally as well as having GUI elements requiring IE8 to display correctly.  I'm hoping I can get Enterprise Mode to render the app GUI elements
and local htm files, while allowing regular web browsing without Enterprise Mode.
