Avast Free or Bitdefender Free?

Q: Avast Free or Bitdefender Free?

So, I'm choosing a free antivirus software to use on my daily driver (I'm a vary advanced user) and I'm trying to decide between Bitdefender free and avast free.
First, I've heard that Bitdefender is dead/unmaintained/buggy?
Also, I've heard avast is kind if shady, I've heard rumors that when you call tech support they pretend there are problems on your computer to get you to pay money, and that it downloads malware on the users pc (Just rumors I've heard, Not accusing them of anything).
So which do you think I should go with? Thanks

Preferred Solution: Avast Free or Bitdefender Free?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Avast Free or Bitdefender Free?

Hi Robo11 First, I've heard that Bitdefender is dead/unmaintained/buggy?It's false. Bitdefender is still actively developped and have quite a good share of the Antivirus market. About the buggy part, it's down to the user's experience. Personally, most of the experiences I had with Bitdefender were quite bad. It was buggy, hogging resources, hard to uninstall, etc. But for some, it might just be the "best Antivirus" they ever used. Also, I've heard avast is kind if shady, I've heard rumors that when you call tech support they pretend there are problems on your computer to get you to pay money, and that it downloads malware on the users pc (Just rumors I've heard, Not accusing them of anything). It's false as well. There's no reputable Antivirus company that would do such a thing. Also, avast! forums offers malware removal assistance in the same kind as BleepingComputer, and there's also UNITE members helping on its forums, so I really doubt that this would ever happen. If you're torn between these two products, since both of them are free, I would suggest you to give them both a try (one after the other, not at the same time) and see for yourself which one you like better. My personal choice goes to avast!, but that's just me. You might also want to consider quietman's advice when it comes to choosing an Antivirus product.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/407147/answers-to-common-security-questions-best-practices/#entry2316629I also noticed that you posted the same thread multiple times, I'll report them so they get junked, I imagine you experienced a bug on your issue that caused the thread to be posted multiple times, no worries, it happens

Avast free vs Bitdefender free for newbies about security. You can sugges other free products that are easy and protect well. Only antivirus.

A:Avast free vs Bitdefender free for newbies

If they absolutely don't know anything ("Hey, what's quarantine? What's scanning? What's definitions?") then Bitdefender without a doubt. If they know basic settings and to tell the difference between false positives than Avast!. I'll have to vote Bitdefender here, but Avast! is a much greater antivirus with those with basic security knowledge.

Update: See below post. I know longer reccommend Bitdefender. +1 to Avast!

I just installed bit defender free edition but I'm alreadt getting confused. I can't find it's settings menu anywhere, when opened from the task bar all it gives is a small window in the bottom right corner, the "my bit defender" box on the page claims i need to register it (but this is the free edition??) and when clicked opens a small box window which just displays white saying "you need to have javascript enabled to view this page". whats more i find this page which suggest bit defender isn't an antivirus at all but rather it is a purely on demand thing like the free edition of malwarebytes, what is going on here? Please explain.Thank You.http://www.bitdefender.com/support/bitdefender-free-edition-549.htmlSee the section marked "important" at the bottom of the page.My machine windows 8.1, previously had AVG but I fully removed that before starting bitdefender's installation.Should i uninstall bitdefender and switch to avast instead?

A:Need some help bitdefender free vs avast free

Can you open the Bitdefender program/interface, then take a screenshot of it to post it here so we can see what you're seeing? Also, many free Antivirus products will ask you to registry in order to use them. So they are free, they just ask you to register yourself in order to be able to use them.

A:BitDefender Antivirus Free vs Avast Antivirus Free vs Avira Antivirus Free

Resource Usage (eg: CPU, RAM): draw, with the indication of Avira, since BitDefender takes overall a little bit less of CPU time, but consumes much more RAM.
Level of Protection and Features (eg: Antivirus , Firewall, Behavior Blocker): Avira has more features, configuration options and is generally more effective when it comes to the malware detection (Proactive and Reactive).
Overall Winner: Avira.
Edit: I've just noticed, that you've added Avast - as the third contestant - to BitDefender and Avira. Still Avira is the winner here. Avast is not too hungry for PC resources and perhaps has more features, but its engine is not so good, and its detection ratio usually lags behind both: BitDefender and Avira.

Hi, all!

With interest I have read the Emsisoft Blog article about free anti-virus vendors that bundle PUPs with them. Here, 7 out of 8 tested free antivirus suites bundle with PUPs. A bit further down the article, an important fact is stated, and I quote:

...Bitdefender Free is one of the only clean antivirus vendors that does not come with any PUPs.

I therefore would like to know: Which more free anti-virus suites than Bitdefender Free do not bundle PUPs?

Thank you very much in advance!

Regards,

Well, Emsisoft Anti-Malware offers a 30 days trial of their program and doesn't bundle PUPs. Emsisoft doesn't bundle any PUPs at all in fact.

Avast and SecureAPlus have been fairly interesting for me. Both seem to have great scanning and protection. Which would you choose?
NOTE: I have heard that SecureAPlus may have a really slow scan in the beginning. If that something you don't like that fine, Avast has a slow scan as well so I am not counting against either one.

A:avast free,spybot s&d free and win defender

I haven't used spybot in many years, it got too glitchy and difficult to use for me...
I tested several Anti Malware programs years ago and chose Malwarebytes (MBAM) Pro, no regrets here.
If you're thinking of MBAM paid, you should get the PRO Lifetime license while you still can.

Newegg.com - malwarebytes pro

MBAM Premium (Ver 2) is an annual license (yearly fees).
I don't use Windows Defender, I use MBAM real time on all my systems.

For additional "real-time security" I also use:
WinPatrol - WinPatrol- Ruiware, LLC
EMET - Download Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit v3.0 from Official Microsoft Download Center

Hello,
The only indication I have that this program is running is the icon becomes visible when I click on "Show Hidden Icons".
It seems to start when I switch on my PC, judging by the presence of this icon.
But this confuses me:
1) Task manager does not show the Bitdefender as running.
2) I have installed "What's In Startup" & Bitdefender is not in the startup list.

I was using this.

Pros:
-It is very light and minimalist.

-MAlicious webpage blocking

Cons:

-Scanning speed too slow
-No additional settings to configure it for yourself.

Hello Malwaretipsers!
Just heard about Bitdefender free antivirus and downloaded it.

I am very happy with the low system impact
but I miss an exclude feature, and a way to remove things from quarantine to be able to use it.

My question is:
If I use this purely as my only security product will that be enough?
OFC, windows firewall is still enabled.

I use google chrome with adblock+ and scriptno & ghostery.
sure, I might download stuff on utorrent, but will bitdefender free protect me?

Also, the most important thing for me is that it's secure enough to make my banking business on the computer.

Thanks for the help!

Yes Bitdefender Free is really a fine product, unless you may experience stability issues.

It came as a Cloud Based AV so you need an active internet connection; + you don't need to worry about as it has web filter too.

I have been using AVG free and I really liked it. It did however steal focus a bit too often for me causing my games to minimize and getting me fragged. That really was a bummer.

I have downloaded and installed bitdefender free and was wanting some opinions from the security experts here. I don't see it recommended often, and did a search of the forums with not many results.

I see the paid version recommended, but not the free one.

A:BitDefender free, any good?

I had it on my PC as a backup. So it was not running all the time. It is a easy and simple one I like. But I did a upgrade to there newer version but it was only good for 30 days. Don't know why it happen like that because it says right at the top I had the free version.
Anyhow I did get it all uninstall and reinstalled like there tech said but had the same trouble still.
Then I unistalled it and went looking around and cleaned up other files and folders and cleaned up the registry.
I want to install it again but was waiting for the 30 days to pass before installing it again.

But I liked it and it was good till that newer version came out and I installed it and what ever bug in it was putting a time limit on the free version.

Hi,

I have already installed avast! anti-virus 5.0.

For extra protection, I have installed Bitdefender 2009 free which is just an on demand scanner (no real-time or on-access scanning). It offers free automatic updates and allows scheduled scanning. It also shows an icon in the system tray.

I was thinking that by doing this I would have the benefit of scanning with 2 different antivirus engines. But does Bitdefender antivirus 2009 free interfere with other antivirus software installed? Although Bitdefender 2009 free is just an on demand scanner, yet I see its many processes running all the time.

Thanks

A:Bitdefender free 2009 + other antivirus ?

Even when one of them is disabled for use as a stand-alone scanner, it can affect the other and cause conflicts. Anti-virus software components insert themselves into the operating systems core and using more than one can cause instability, crash your computer, slow performance and waste system resources. When the stand-alone is actively running in the background while connected to the Internet, they both may try to update their definition databases at the same time. As the programs compete for resources required to download the necessary files this often can result in sluggish system performance or unresponsive behavior. When the stand-alone is running, the primary anti-virus may interpret the activity as suspicious behavior or vice-a-versa and there is a greater chance of them alerting you to a false positive. If one finds a virus or a suspicious file and then the other also finds the same, both programs will be competing over exclusive rights on dealing with that virus or suspicious file. Each anti-virus may attempt to remove the offending file and quarantine it at the same time resulting in a resource management issue as to which program gets permission to act first. If one anit-virus finds and quarantines the file before the other one does, then you encounter the problem of both wanting to scan each other's zipped or archived files and each reporting the other's quarantined contents. This can lead to a repetitive cycle of endless alerts that continually warn you that a virus has been found when that is not the case.

Hello This is a mini-review of BitDefender Free See illustration below in thread and next post for important infos Pros Virtually resource usage on my W system even when running full scan Essentially requires no user interaction virtually quot set-and-forget quot Requires virtually General Free - BitDefender Impression no user knowledge experience to quickly learn to use properly No cost but not free Signature database identical to paid version but local signature cache is tiny so detections may take a long time until BD Free cycles through entire signature database during its continuous scan Malicious URL blocking that does work equivalent to paid version User can manually perform full-system scan Real-time protection Virus Shield with heuristics Active Virus Control Can Quarantine Restore and re-Quarantine detected files Cons No firewall To be effective system should not be turned off so as to always have continuous scan running Scans are so slow that malware may be on system for far too long No way to increase scan speed Essentially no support but there is a PDF manual Online offers when register product BD Free will auto-delete files without user approval during installtion it deleted Emsisoft s a hook dll during the initial installation scan see posted screenshot in thread with reason why BD Free did it Impression BD Free is the minimalist AV taken to the absolute limit It is so extreme I consider it quot Experimental quot BitDefender Free - General Impression A curiosity if you will I am not too sure about PCMag s review by Rubenking on this one Stars Really Maybe but jury is still out When testing BD Free against malware from MT s Malware Hub I see a difference in detection rates compared to the paid version Obviously they should detect equally if they both use the same signature database and are updated with the same frequency CORRECTION It has been explained to me by fellow MT member yesnoo that BD states the signaturess are the same but BD Free s local signature cache is very small Unlike the paid version BD Free has to cycle through the entire signatures database via the cloud during its very slow continuous scan Real-time on-access queries are made by Virus Shield On the other hand the malicious URL blocking seems equivalent to that of the paid version I also observed BD Free s heuristics real-time stop malware that evaded signature detection the recently posted JS Downloader Bat Encoder sample on MT Malware Hub Heuristics blocked the js file That was a real surprise so for BD Free In contrast when those js bat files were allowed to run the paid version did not block them but instead later slammed the hidden downloads Scratching my head on the difference There are other drawbacks It uses continuous scan mode that is so slow that it will take an entire day if not more to fully scan an entire system This means malware could be on system for a long time There is no mechanism to re-Quarantine a file I tried to locate the Quarantine and whitelist files but despite my best efforts they eluded me GUI is easy No bugs There s nothing to it There s even a -page PDF manual complete with illustrations It s in the BitDefender folder and cannot be found online From what I see compared to Windows Defender it is an improvement in some respects It s a breeze to install and uninstall so a quot look-see quot is not too bothersome However I think Avira Free is a better alternative Bottom line on this one it is really only suitable for someone that downloads and installs very little or a system that has low-end RAM CPU This solution is very likely not able to adequately protect the quot click-happy quot If BD Free turns out to actually provide -star protection over time I will be surprised At this point I am not convinced not against malware younger than a week Older malware yes In short order this review is closed nbsp

I use Bitdefender in VM for malware testing; seems to work well, has good reputation but
obviously not competes with the commercial version because It is missing some functionality .

That's the question. MSE works pretty well but it seems BitDefender gets high marks (everyone is assuming the free version is using much of the same engine found in the pay version - I hope that's true). I'd like to give it a try if they can work together without stepping on each other.

A:Can free BitDefender and MSE live together happily?

I do not recommend having two anti virus programs on one computer at one time.
It doesn't matter which two brands. Just install one at a time.
I use MSE and many have good luck with Avast but still just one at a time.

I am actually trialing Bitdefender paid version, just asking because my trial is over in 89 days. Is Bitdefender Free a very good alternative? Does it have Photon, Idle Scan, Active Virus Control, etc? Note that I am actually on an Emsisoft subscription, which is going to expire in 147 days. Also, I just need protection until Black Friday because I will get a new computer then.

A:How Does Bitdefender Free Compare To Other Products?

it have all the futures from the paid version only photon isnt in it(that says the bd staff) but for me, its using for sure some caching, fingerprint system). I dont know why almost all saying that this free av is bad. Its the best av for a user who just dont know nothing. He cant make anything wrong. Set and forget, for real. Some ppl saying its alrdy not delovement anymore. But i dont think so, u still get every 1-2 hours signatur updates, the Forum for the free version is still opend and the detections is as good as the paid version. Sometimes the detections is even better(maybe because its more cloud based than the paid av from bitdefender). If u have a emsisoft key, use EIS9. The behavour blocker is top notch from eis.

Greetings,

In 2013 I tried Bitdefender Free 2013 on my WinXP computer.  I chose to uninstall it and thought I had using their own uninstaller program.  Now.... 1.5 years later I found Bitdefender again on my computer.  I was running Pitiform Speecy (nice program) and saw I had 2 antivirus programs running..... Avast! and Bitdenfender.  Wow... was I surprised.  I uninstalled Avast! because of an iastor.sys BSOD problem and that seems to have solved that problem.

Now, however, I have tried to uninstall Bitdefender but can't find a way.  It doesn't show up in Revo and I used the Bitdefender uninstall program again.  It appears to have worked but it still on the Virus Protection tab in Windows Security Center and also on Speecy.

Any help to remove Bitdefender completely is appreciated.

A:Bitdefender Free 2013 uninstalled but not

Since you uninstalled avast...removing Bitdefender will leave you unprotected so you need to download a replacement and have it ready. These are the instructions provided by the vendor. How to uninstall BitdefenderBitdefender uninstall tool direct downloadUninstall Tools for Bitdefender Products...Paid, Trial and Business ProductsIf doing those steps did not work, then I suggest you reinstall Bitdefender Free, reboot then try uninstalling again.Note: It is not uncommon for some anti-virus programs to not completely uninstall itself using the usual method of Programs and Features or Add/Remove Programs due to the presence of related services and processes running in the background. Sometimes the uninstall works more effectively if you first stop and disable the program's service (and associated processes) or perform the removal in safe mode so there are less processes which can interfere with the uninstallation.

I've heard that Bitdefender was the best antivirus software out there so I decided to give the free version a try before I bought the paid version. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium [Up-to-date] and I experience two significant issues:

1) Once installed, I could no longer use CTRL + Shift + Esc to access the task manager. Actually, I couldn't even access the task manager at all. After I uninstalled the free version, I could access it again.

2) I couldn't shut down my computer. It would just freeze on a the desktop background screen and wouldn't do anything.

3) Chrome became extremely slow.

I'm not sure if there's a solution to these issues, but I'd love to hear it if so.

A:Bitdefender Free Antivirus issues with Windows 7

1. Just to be certain you meant CTRL + ALT + DELETE to access the task manager? I wasn't sure if that way even works..?

2. Are you sure nothing got passed BD or the AV you had before maybe scan with Zemana..

3. Did BD install any extensions to chrome? Sometimes extensions can clutter your browser and cause more harm then good. Possible run CCleaner and see if that helps.

Hello Bleeping computer I come here to seek your excellent help So today I went to do a full scan of my system with my antivirus Bitdefender Free Edition To my horror the notification bubble popped up and said it had found and removed something threats I found this a bit strange since I had just ran a Malwarebytes scan that came up completely clean and my computer was running fine I tried to view what it had found but it kept glitching out Apparently Bitdefender Free has a reputation for glitches I tried to view the An on demand scan is ongoing event Even though letting Bitdefender through infection possibly Free it said the scan had finished but it Bitdefender Free possibly letting infection through said zero threats found in the event Also when I went to the threat control tab there is nothing in the quarantine I know that Bitdefender Free will sometimes Bitdefender Free possibly letting infection through delete infected files instead of quarantining them but it seemed like out of the something threats Bitdefender Free possibly letting infection through it said it found at least a few would be quarantined The program was glitching out pretty bad reloading the events and not allowing me to clear them A system reboot fixed this I continued to scan with Hitmanpro which found a couple PuP registry entries Which since my trial had expired I manually deleted with Regedit and AdwCleaner which found a registry entry for a proxy server override Something like that does that mean that I was using a proxy server If so That's bad I don't think my system is currently infected But who knows I'm not even sure if BD even found any real threats since it was glitching out and nothing displayed in the quarantine I'm probably going to switch over to Avast because if it was a real infection Bit Defender let it through and didn't even let me see the list of infections I'd like to hear your take on this and hopefully help me clear up some confusion Thank you

I understand that Windows Defender will now also protect you against PUPs and is much more robust than in previous versions of Windows and provides much better security.

Would I be better off with the free version of Bitdefender Antivirus, or should I stick with Windows Defender?

(Windows 10)

A:Windows Defender vs Bitdefender Free Antivirus

Windows 8 and Windows 10 integrates a robust version of Windows Defender for its anti-virus and anti-malware protection. IMO Windows 8/10 Defender is just as good as any other free antivirus solution (and probably easier to use for the novice) without bundled toolbars or nagging popups...read Is Windows Defender Good Enough. With that said, Bitdefender is one of the few free anti-virus products which does not bundle toolbars or have nagging popups.Although Windows 8/10 Defender provides some anti-malware protection...it is weak, meaning it does not provide comprehensive protection and cannot prevent, detect and remove all threats at any given time. This is true for most anti-virus solutions. Anti-virus and anti-malware programs each perform different tasks as it relates to computer security and threat detection. Essentially, they look for and remove different types of malicious threats. In simplistic terms, Anti-virus programs generally scan for infectious malware which includes viruses, worms, Trojans, rootkis and bots.Anti-malware programs generally tend to focus more on adware, spyware, unwanted toolbars, browser hijackers, potentially unwanted programs and potentially unsafe applications.Anti-virus and Anti-malware solutions with anti-exploitation features protect against zero-day malware, drive-by downloads, exploits and Exploit Kits. Therefore, you need both an anti-virus and an anti-malware solution for maximum protection. If you choose to use Windows 8/10 Defender (or any other anti-virus), then I recommend adding an additional anti-malware solution. Please read Supplementing your Anti-Virus Program with Anti-Malware Tools for information about trustworthy and effective anti-malware programs.

Hello
Any opinions about Bitdefender Free Edition 2014?
Is it worth installing?
Mod Edit: Moved to Bitdefender subforum.

A:Bitdefender Free Edition 2014 - Worth installing?

The free version is very light.

However, it is buggy, lacks features other free AVs have and has very slow scanning. I wouldn't recommend it. If you want free solutions, avast! or Avira will serve you well. If you want to stay with BD, than try their IS.

Hey guys. I am interested in your opinion as to whether or not I should move to Avast 6 Free. It looks great, being comprehensive and supposedly lightweight. Currently I use MS Security Essentials, MalwareBytes Full (w/real-time protection), and Firefox w/NoScript. My computer has been running great without crap issues or viruses but just trying to minimize the memory footprint while maintaining protection. Also seeing if Avast would be a more simple setup for my clients rather than them using MSSE & MalwareBytes Full. All opinions welcome!

A:Avast 6 Free or..

Avast 6 is still in Beta, no? I'd wait till the "dust" settles before making any move, if ANY. IMO what you have now is SOLID--If it ain't broke don't fix it.

BTW, I use Avast 5 free, Mbam Free.....EVERYTHING free. I'll NEVER be forced to pay for something I can get free, and I can donate whatever I CHOOSE TO to the software creator.

I'm funny that way LOL

Hi guys. I've spent this morning testing some AV's with Malware Hub samples, tweaking settings for better protection. I usually use Emsisoft Internet Security, but lastly i'm a bit concerned about its detection and protection against new malware. I have experience with ESET and Kaspersky, but i was looking for a lighter solution, not too bloated. I was a bit surprised, when i tested Avast with Jack's Maximum Protection Guide, that the results were perfect in all samples i ran on Malware Hub, while other suites, as ESET, Avira or Emsisoft, had worse results. Now, i'm running Avast Free and i wonder what components do you have installed and what cons have you found in a regular use of this AV.

Thanks

A:About Avast Free...

If u want a bloatfree avast just install web and realtime shield. u dont need more to have the core protection moduls and for maximum security. i dont use it anymore but found no cons, it is realy light, one of the stablest av u can have and realy good protection if u tweak it abit. nothing wrong with using avast if someone of my family want a av, i always recomment avast because its easy and can be made to sit and forget.

Users have complained for years about unresponsive behavior when the computer attempts to awake from sleep. There is no universal fix solution as there have been various reasons given for this particular issue and various suggestions to correct it. If avast is not able to determine the cause, the next step is to contact the computer manufacturer via thier support or customer service web site.

Was recommeded to install Avast as one of the best free AV programs. When doing that I'm told itīs on a 60 days trial period - in fact with the new 5.0 version only 30days. After that point I should decide if I want to register and start paying. So what's the deal here, is it free or only free for a period?

I use Avast with my Win 8.1 and have been happy with it til now. I have been getting daily reminders to update my Avast to a premium version and to stop getting the reminders last time, I uninstalled it and reinstalled it making sure I have the Free version downloaded and not a Trail version but it has started to prompt me again after only a few weeks on the new install.

If I have the free version I wouldn't expect to be prompted to upgrade to a paid version or is this what to expect? Is this the same for others that have it?

A:Avast FREE Version....

1. Yes that is what you may expect
However, if you are using Free Antivirus 2015, the only way to disable the sale offers is to upgrade your protection to the paid one.
2. The simple solution is to uninstall AVAST and use the FREE and no sales pop-ups - Windows defender included with 8/8.1
and indeed IMHO your system will run more smoothly and with no problems - as against the use of the FREE Avast.
Avast is good of that there is little doubt, but I am not convinced that the free AVAST is the best for Windows 8.1

I have been using Avast Free Antivirus for more than 4 years without any problems. It quietly does it's job in the background. It has a relatively small footprint and the false positives are extremely low. It's set to automatically update the Engine and virus definitions, and to notify me of Program updates. So far so good...

But, now it's doing things without my knowledge.
1. Avast SafeZone Browser. This downloaded and installed without any input from me - twice! It even added 2 shortcuts to the Start Menu. The folder in Program Files now has a size of 364 MB!

2. Avast Antispam. Also downloaded, installed and disabled Windows Defender (Windows 7) without my permission.

It's always great when free software adds additional features/components but, it's not acceptable when they download and install without the users knowledge.

It might be time to move on...

Hey guys I ran a full format on a PC that I use to download and save drivers. After the format I installed XP sp3, the I installed Avast Free. Well when it came time to Register, I clicked the Register button and a new page opened asking if I upgraded. So I opened Avast, went to Settings, and under General I clicked Registration, and it said, "You Are Registered". My question is, how ? I never filled out the registration, not my name or e-mail address. It never gave me a way to register. Any ideas on what is going on ?

A:Avast Free Registration

Did you have avast installed prior to the format? If so, avast probably stored your prior registration info on their servers so when you connect with them, they can identify you and your computer. I believe its the same info you see when signing into your avast account (https://my.avast.com/en-us/devices) which lists your computer.

I changed my antivirus to Avast!, and was using AVG. After installing Avast! and re-booting, the stupid clicker keeps having one of those 'loading' timer things appear next to it. I ve tried many free antivirus over the years but these two have always consistently been the ones I liked the most After some issues with Windows last year I had to briefly switch to Avira but after the issues were fixed I got back to Avast because it was the one I had learned to rely upon in the last few years However I m open to reassess my position between these two excellent products Something that has also spurred me to reassess the situation was the fact that LifeHacker has recently changed their recommendation from Avast to Avira as the quot The Best Free Antivirus App for Windows quot Free vs Antivirus 2016 Avira Free Avast 2016 Antivirus On one hand Avast offers a more complete feature set File System Shield Web Shield Mail Avast Free Antivirus 2016 vs Avira Free Antivirus 2016 Shield Behavior Blocker DeepScreen Still I disable the E-mail blocker because I solely use Web mail I also disable the Web shield because It seems to slightly slow down my browsing I don t like to have all my HTTP traffic analyzed by the AV or any other program Sometimes it doesn t play well with HTTPS because it internally to scan the encrypted traffic which changes the original website s certificate I know I can selectively disable the Web Shield for HTTPS only So in practice I have been using the File System Shield and the Behavior Blocker at default sensitivity settings no Hardened Mode to avoid too many False Positives and issues with less known software I ve had no problems with this set up for a long time Regarding Avira it lacks Mail and Web Shield it only has a File System Shield and as far as I m aware they don t have a Behavior Blocking technology like Avast They rely entirely upon signatures and heuristics More recently they also have the Avira Protection Cloud which sends file signatures to the cloud in order to provide better protection does it really improve upon the local signatures and heuristics or is it just a fad The lack of Behavior Blocking is what concerns me in terms of how well protected I am with Avira compared to Avast Is it really better to have Avira with its better quot traditional engine quot or is it better to stick with Avast which sports a slightly worse quot traditional engine quot but that possesses advanced Behavior Blocking technology DeepScreen I m also interested in other aspects besides protection namely Resource Usage I m mainly concerned with CPU usage I d also like to keep disk access to a minimum because I don t have an SSD which means I don t want my AV to slow the disk access even further Performance Impact On daily usage only with real-time protection enabled which one has less impact on overall system performance Ads Popups and Nagging in general How is the upgrade nagging on the two products I mean with Avast I ve had no problems recently The only popups I usually see are related to the real status of my system or Software Updater notices to update a given program e g Skype I may very rarely see a popup that talks about some paid Avast product but they are pretty rare I believe How is this on Avira Does it still show you a popup on every update every day What kind of advertisements can I expect P S Last time I used Avira it had a slightly annoying behavior Every time it would detect some infected file it would then force me to automatically run a Quick Scan on the system This was a bit annoying and time consuming at times Is this still happening today I hope you guys can help me by sharing your experiences and opinions about both products I ll update this post if needed nbsp

A:Avast Free Antivirus 2016 vs Avira Free Antivirus 2016

I vote for avast free more options more tweaks u can do in any option, and good deleting " dangers ". ofc software updater desactivate.
avira is anoying when detect some " infecction". run quick scan then many times ask fot reset pc not really good deleting real "dangers".
another thing is " the cloud " based.. oh common without internet cant do nothing really ?..
Abouth resources 50/50 both are good in this, ofc more " shields " u active and more " grade of detection " u activate more cpu/ram uses.

Recent postings here from some users seem to indicate that the current version of MSE is quite good. I was thinking of using either Avast or Avira, but if MSE really is as good at detection and removal then I thought I'd give it a try first. Anyone try all three recently? The reports I've found online still seem to show MSE as not quite as good.

Nevermind. I did more searching and found more info. I'm going to try MSE, SpywareBlaster, and MAMB (which I already use).

A:MSE,avast! Free, avira or avg-which one is better as per your experience.

Those kinds of comparative testing results will vary depending on a variety of factors to include but not limited to who conducted the testing, what they were testing for (type of threats, attack vectors, exploits), what versions of anti-virus software was tested, what type of scanning engine was used, and the ability to clean or repair. There are no universally predefined set of standards or criteria for testing which means each test will yield different results. As such, you need to look for detailed information about how the tests were conducted, the procedures used, and data results. You ask a common question for which you will receive varying opinions and recommendations. Here are links to some recent BC discussion topics with opinions from other members:* What is the best antivirus protection?* What's the best premium security suite in the market currently?* Recommend a good free antivirus program* Which antivirus and malware programs should I use together?* Antivirus Solution?
