How did my Windows key become disabled?

Q: How did my Windows key become disabled?

I have recently somehow disabled my windows key. I have tried going to Microsoft and doing the "Fix it" thing for the registry and it does not work. I have tried this numerous times. Could it possibly be the keyboard I'm using? It use to work however with the same keyboard. I use Avast Anti-Virus, Malwarebytes and iObit system care as my general cleaners. Not sure if any of those have a default setting to disable the button. Thoughts / Suggestions please?!?!

Preferred Solution: How did my Windows key become disabled?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Do you mean Windows is asking you to activate again? What version of Windows are you running?

MalwareBytes real-time protection is off and cannot be turned on. The same goes for Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Update. This never happened before. Also, I want to clean my laptop for any other things that may or may not be related to this issue.

I would appreciate any help and a step-by-step process. Thank you.

Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next replyDo not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again. Or if rebooting is required run it again. If you continue having problems running rkill.com, you can download iExplore.exe or eXplorer.exe, which are renamed copies of rkill.com, and try them instead.>>>>Please download TDSSKiller.zip and and extract it.Run TDSSKiller.exe. Click on Change Parameters Put a check in the box of Detect TDLFS file system Click Start scan. When it is finished the utility outputs a list of detected objects with description.

Yes, a restore disk with restore your PC back to its clean state as if you got it new. Not sure why its preventing you from logging in, some sort of configuration error. Pleasse note, if you use the restore disk, you lose any data on the HD.

If data is important, try using a Live Linux CD and boot from that, then you can access the HD and copy files of it before using the restore CD.

Hey all,

Firstly I hope i have posted this in the right forum.

As the name states I can not use any of my windows security I know this is because of a fake anti virus i had at one point, I also can't install any other virus protection or firewalls onto my computer.

I'm assuming this has to do with what the virus has done with my computers registry, correct me if I'm wrong.

I want to restore my registry back to its default I have tried the reg restore /? command in cmd but it comes up with (see attached picture) and am not sure what this means or for the next step for me to take to continue the command.

Is there any down side to restoring my registry to its default as well?

Problem solved and this little pc is on the road to recovery.

I used a combo of ad-aware, spybot, AVG but the trick was using SDFix first. That helped kill the bogus security warning/redirect and fixed the disabled task manager and the disabled windows explorer.

A:Hijack Log - Taskmgr Disabled / Bogus Security Warnings-redirects / Regedit Disabled

Problem solved and this little pc is on the road to recovery.

I used a combo of ad-aware, spybot, AVG but the trick was using SDFix first. That helped kill the bogus security warning/redirect and fixed the disabled task manager and the disabled windows explorer.

Hi granty17,Welcome to BC HijackThis forum. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem. Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult. In case the malware prevented installing or running Malwarebytes, don't spend much time on it and let me know quickly. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these locations:malwarebytes.orgmajorgeeks.comDouble Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan. The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient. When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy&Paste the MBAM log.Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

I was having a problem with the message "Windows Security Alert Warning! Potential Spyware Operation!" popping up. I found this forum in an online search and followed the instructions to download "Super anti spyware". I followed the instructions and did the scan and that particular problem seemed to be fixed.

But now I have no control panel. If I press "contrl-alt-delete" it tells me that the "tast manager has been disabled by the administrator" and if I try to go to "add/remove programs" it tells me that "this problem has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this comptuer".

So evidently I didn't get rid of all of the problem. What else can I do to fix this? Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi there I posted a thread in 'Virus Trojan Spyware Help' back in April about problems I was having with my laptop http www techsupportforum com secu d-etc-etc html To summarise the main problems I'm having are - Windows Firewall is disabled and when I double click on 'Windows Firewall' in the Control Panel a message comes up saying quot Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running Do you want to start the Windows Firewall Internet Connection Sharing ICS service quot Then I can enable Firewall but on rebooting it reverts back to being automatically disabled - The taskbar is often grey and old-style rather than blue - When I try and play music in Media Player it says 'Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device There might not be a sound device installed on your computer it might be in use by another program or it might not be functioning properly' I reinstalled the driver from Acer's website and now I here the usual beeps clicks and the Windows start up sound but still can't play audio Similar problems with Itunes and audio from Youtube - I can't write CDs - When I double click on System in Control Panel instead of the System page coming up a box comes up saying 'Data Execution Prevention - To help protect your computer Windows has closed this program Name Run a DLL as an App Publisher Microsoft Corporation ' - My wireless connection doesn't work All of these problems arose at the same time vet was very helpful in eliminating the possibility that the problems were malware-related and thought that it may date back to me running Chkdsk and not converting lost chains to files Under his recommendation I converted my file system to NTFS I was very busy with work for a little disabled/Can't disabled/Audio Firewall open taskbar/etc 'System'/Grey while but am now able Firewall disabled/Audio disabled/Can't open 'System'/Grey taskbar/etc to look at this again Firewall disabled/Audio disabled/Can't open 'System'/Grey taskbar/etc Please let me know what I can do to get my computer back on track and what information you might need to help me with this Many thanks for your time Jacob

Bump.
Anyone know how to solve this? Or could you recommend a forum where someone might know?

Hi Ive had what I believe to be a backdoor trojan on my computer for about weeks now It started with a malicious pop up which kept appearing virus Task but disabled, delete Manager dont scanners detect properly Regedit Disabled, making it look like i had loads of viruses and telling me that I needed to buy this virus scanner and my computer would not power off when shutting down I knew I had a virus so I tried to use my scanner malwarebytes but it would not open Task Manager Disabled, Regedit disabled, virus scanners detect but dont delete properly the virus had got to that as well Eventually I tried copying malwarebytes to a removable media and managed to scan that way I had lots of trojans including koobface My computer was still really slow after the scan and they had not been properly deleted because each scan kept bringing the trojans again The next problem was my internet browser would not work i eventually fixed it cant remember how but i believe the virus caused this Then was the disabling of task manager regedit and gpedit which i have found by reading forums how to get this enabled again I have since downloaded AVG this tells me i have a trojan horse called 'generic ' again I keep scanning the same viruses are found and deleted then on reboot they are there again I also noticed that when i can access task manager some proccesses such as windows defender are really high and the only way to run the computer without it crashing slowing down is to terminate the proccess One new thing that has only just started to happen is that the task manager regit disable has by administrator pop up sometimes appears and cant be closed instead they multiplies and i have to reboot Although I will confess my anti virus prevention techniques are great when i get viruses i can usually delete it or use and scan and get rid of it myself This is the worse virus I have ever dealt with If anyone gets and opportunity can you please look at my DDS and help me It is much appreciated thanks Louise

A:Solved: HJT LOG ATTACHED - Pop ups, ActiveX disabled, Task manager disabled

I just followed the bellow instructions on how to use SDFix
I found the instructions in another posting: http://forums.techguy.org/malware-removal-hijackthis-logs/742092-virus-help-my-desktop-blue.html

So far everything is working great.

Thanks Me!

You're Welcome!

==================================================

Please close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of SDFix and make sure you are disconnected from the Internet after downloading the program but before extracting the files.
<LI itxtvisited="1">Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with SDFix and remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results". <LI itxtvisited="1">Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

<LI itxtvisited="1">Restart your computer <LI itxtvisited="1">After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually <LI itxtvisited="1">Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear <LI itxtvisited="1">Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter
Choose your usual account.

<LI itxtvisited="1">Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script. <LI itxtvisited="1">Type Y to begin the cleanup process. <LI itxtvisited="1">It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to reboot. <LI itxtvisited="1">Press any Key and it will restart the PC. <LI itxtvisited="1">When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons. <LI itxtvisited="1">Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to the clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Definitely infected, I am sure of that. As I don't remember disabling taskmanager or regedit myself. Another thing, I formated my system, and the problem persists. I have run out of ideas, I don't know what to do.

I do not have much experience with such matters, so I was hoping you guys could help me out.

Thanks in advance.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan/rootkit.

This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please refer to Microsoft's Online Safety article for tips on creating a strong password.

Do not change passwords or do any transactions from the infected computer until it has been cleaned.

------------------------------------------------------

Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

------------------------------------------------------

If there are any personal files, pics, etc. on your computer you cannot live without, back them up now just as a precaution.

It appears that you have two antivirus programs installed and running, Security Essentials and Symantec. While this may seem like better protection, they can actually conflict with one another and cause system instability or even system hangs.

Please choose one to keep and uninstall the other via Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel. I suggest keeping Security Essentials.

------------------------------------------------------

Go here > Bleeping Computer Downloads: RKill

Click on the iExplore.exe download link and save it to your desktop.

If necessary, download it to a USB drive on another computer, and transfer it to your desktop.

Double-click iExplore.exe to run it.

You may have to run it multiple times to kill all the processes that are controlling your machine.

If you get a prompt from the fake antivirus, just leave it open.

Don't restart your computer, or you will have to do it all over again.

------------------------------------------------------

Please download ComboFix and Save it to your Desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

------------------------------------------------------

Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications, usually via a right-click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.

i did a panda scan and whatnot as well as a fresh Hijack this scan, spybot discovered a file called offlog.txt again so the smitfraud keylogger is still on my system somewhere. when trying to update my system with microsoft updates they installed OK but after reboot i had 2 crashes during startup with the blue screen of death and had to use system restore in safe mode to reset, i have not downloaded those updates again for the moment

i also cleared out a lot of space from my hard drive as well to increase speed, and to mention from a couple threads involving work computers, this is a personal laptop i do my work on at home as well as use for gaming

My McAfee expired and the computer was unprotected for 2 days. In that time, picked up a rogue disable security virus. It has disasbled my system restore and will not allow me to download the McAfee update. It will also not allow me to boot up in safe mode. I did use CyberDefender, which found the file. I removed a file in my registry keys, but my problem persists. I have tried to use system restore through the cmd prompt as well to no avail. I also tried to download the McAfee update to a CD using my laptop & try to boot up in this computer, but I get a message saying JavaScript not working (Java updates are current)

I don't know what to do at this point - very frustrated.

Greetings jdavies11 and Welcome to the Forums,

Let's first try to uninstall some problems. All of these are out dated AND exploited:
Adobe Reader 7.0 You can download the latest version Here
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
...please click start-->Control Panel-->Add/Remove Programs. Scroll down the list to locate the program names and click Remove for each. Reboot at any time you are prompted, otherwise reboot when finished uninstalling all of them.

With the latest version of Java, a new zero day exploit has already been discovered and is actively being used by hackers. I would not recommend at this time reinstalling even the newest version of jave.

If you must use IE for surfing at all, please use it at this time in the No addons mode (at least till Sun Micro issues their next update scheduled for July. To do that, click start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->Internet Explorer (No Add-ons). In Firefox, follow These Instructions to disable java. You can also install the "NoScript" Add-on" for Firefox and selectively allow/disallow scripting no matter what web page you visit.

Please download combofix from This Webpage...and read through the instructions there for running the tool.

***Important Note***
Please read through the guidance on that web page carefully and thoroughly...and install the Recovery Console. Using this tool without the Recovery Console installed is NOT RECOMMENDED.

If you have Windows Vista, you can skip the recovery console step...in Vista it's in the System Recovery Options menu. The System Recovery Options menu is on the Windows Vista installation disc. If Windows doesn't start correctly, you can use these tools to repair startup problems.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot into a special recovery (repair) mode that is not otherwise available. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It's a simple procedure that will only take a few moments.

Once installed, a blue screen prompt should appear that reads as follows:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

When you see that screen, please continue as follows:
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a log file for you. Please post that log back here on your next reply. Thanks!

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running....that may cause the scan to stall

Recently my computer got infected with a Backdoor and a trojan. Advertisement websites continously popped up. My registry editing, task manager, right-click, internet editing were all disabled.

I've read an old thread in this forum that seemed to have to same problem I do : http://forums.techguy.org/security/512631-solved-right-button-half-working.html . But the thing is that Regfix.reg does NOT even work. I guess the spyware/virus also did something to the Notepad.

I already got rid of the spyware. No advertisements appear anymore, the computer returns to its normal speed. However, many functions such as task manager, registry, right-click, internet options still don't work.

Please help me out with this!

So I can enable DMA on my CDRW, I disabled SB16 DOS Emulation in the Device Manager. When I did this and rebooted my 3 Com US Robotics 56k Voice Int PnP modems IRQ changed form IRQ3 to 7 and Com2 went to Com3 and the modem will not work. I removed the modem in the device manager and let windows refind it. But it will still not work.
If I enable SB16 dos emulation, everything goes back normal, including not to be able to tick the DMA on the CDRW.

The modem is in a ISA slot.

What do I need to do?

A:[SOLVED] Disabled Modem when disabled SB16 DOS Emulation

Bump!
I sure need some modem help!
It's there and works but when the com port and IRQ changes, windows don't see it.

Good Day Forum Name is Ivan I guess I'll start of with some details about my system and the issue I'm having It is a bit unique given the OS isn't the usual XP it is Windows XP Embedded but I'm hoping it's not something that will Keyboard XP screen, Windows splash disabled. won't Windows Embedded, past boot hinder Windows XP Embedded, Windows won't boot past splash screen, Keyboard disabled. your Windows XP Embedded, Windows won't boot past splash screen, Keyboard disabled. ability to help me Now the issue is and I'll be straight up honest I'm assuming has to do with a P P filesharing and is very similar in it's essence to the FBI virus The USB keyboard locked out and render the naviagation keys useless upon entering the Boot Menu Windows does not boot past the splashscreen I was able to get the keyboard to work by using a PS Adapter I had on hand giving me the ability to navigate through the Boot Menu and moved on to the next step Since my problem symptoms closely resembled the virus mentioned I have proceded to follow the basic solution people use Downloaded HitmanPro App and attempted to make a bootable flashdrive But unfortunately the only other computer I have is a bit Windows machine and I couldn't run a bit version I would need to use for the Infected I'm assuming machine With the Hitman app off the list of quick solutions I turned to AVG Rescue tool which is said to be less sensitive to the version of OS and was faced with yet another issue When in Boot Menu and attempting to choose USB FDD Flashdrive or any other option the machine still attempts to boot from HDD and I'm hit with the windows splashscreen that loads for a few seconds and screen goes dark I'm kinda limited in what I can do given this machine has no CD drive so I'm limited to using USB for any tools however if needed Im willing to go ahead and install a cd dvd drive or gain access to a bit machine to make the bootable Hitman flashdrive or anything else if it brings us closer to resolving the issue Hope I'm posting in th right forum and not being a pest Looking forward to hearing from you guys I need to fix this machine since I use it for work and my ability to pay bills depends on it directly Thanks Ivan

A:Windows XP Embedded, Windows won't boot past splash screen, Keyboard disabled.

Update.

Got a 32bit version of Hitman app and made bootable Flash drive.

Got into Boot menu with a PS/2 keyboard.

Took a few tries to get it to boot from flashdrive, but in the end Windows started up and let me log in.

Prior to log in I get an Error titled "savedump.exe - Entry Point Not Found" ...and message:

The procedure entry point SymSetSymWithAddr64 could not be located in the dynamic link library DBGHELP.dll
Mouse works, but the system stopped recognizng PS/2 keyboard, so I hooked up one through USB and was able to log in.

Everything loads up alright and seems to be in order, except a few files system files missing (i.e. vidcap.ax; i8042prt.sys) and I get a message to insert a Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3 (never had one)

I have scanned the system with Hitman - no threats found except a few tracking cookies.

I'm not exactly computer savvy when it comes to dealing with anything that wouldn't let Windows boot, but overall a very strange case here. I don't even know what happened or if the tools I used are responsible for my problem's resolution.
I got no responces anywhere I went online...perhaps because I have weird Windows chopped up speciffically to deal with my machine's firmare (it's a desktop Dental 3D Scanner)...so, I just have a message to anyone having any problems - Don't give up. ;)

Not to say this forum didn't help me at all, lots of great material here and I'll be sticking around to read up more. Thank you all for being here, keep up the great work.

All Best,

Ivan

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will be assisting you with your Malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed. Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Have just spent two unproductive days trying to use WET to move items from my Vista system to my new Windows 8.1 machine. The tool will evidently work for Vista --> Windows 8, but not to 8.1. I now read in places where Microsoft expects us to use SkyDrive for the transfer. In fact you get an unhelpful error message that reads: "Windows Easy Transfer can't be used to transfer files from Windows Vista or Windows XP". The pages wherein you download WET to Vista and to 8.1 have nothing to say on this until you get to the point of actually transferring. Ok, now trying to learn SkyDrive; also have Dropbox as an alternative.

Hello all!

If you have a Windows 8 machine and for some reason the network card has been disabled via control panel, please can you let me know? I have had a few people call in with this issue today which is a little concerning. The only other commonality between the customers is that the machine brand is HP. It did happen on both desktop and laptop machines, and the NIC that was disabled was the active one. (so both Ethernet and Wireless).

I am trying to track this to see if it was a Windows 8 update that caused this.

Help please! I don't know what happened, but my Internet Explorer is now running with add-ons disabled, and I have NO idea how to get my add-ons back and re-install active X. I had Windows 8, uninstalled it, re-installed Windows 7 (running Windows 7 is fine with me, I will keep it), and I went to system restore under the "programs" button on my start menu. My computer would not restore either. I tried to restore it to the settings I had several days ago, and tried again by going a few more days back, but no luck. Can anyone help me? I am very, very much a beginniner when it comes to computer lingo and those kinds of things.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Just helping someone to get their touchpad working and noticed in the services that most of them are disabled ! Is this normal? When I look at my own computer most of mine are enabled in one way or another except those I have specifically turned off. Is there any way of enabling all the services in one go as I think it would be easier than having to go through them all individually. I can then disable the few that are not needed.

Login to the Administrator account. If you have not enabled it and you don't have a working Administrator level account available, see below.

See this Tutorial by Flavius: User Account Password - Change from WinRE System Repair Disc.

Once you have that, you can log in as the Administrator and remove/change the password on your account.

I have a Sony Optiarc DVD drive. When I first upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 it was working but later it is not. It shows in the Bios but not in Windows. I even bought a new Lite-on DVD drive and put it in and still not recognized by Windows 10.

Seems to be common issue for many with this upgrade. Did you update system drivers from the PC manufacturer's site after this upgrade ? Look at top part of this article first, then try resolution 1 and then 3 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/314060

I'm trying to activate Windows Update, but it has a red X. If I click "check for updates," it tells me it can't because the service isn't running. If I click "change settings" I see a green check mark and the setting "install updates automatically (recommended)." I've changed the setting to "never check for updates," logged out, then went back in. No change. I also went into services.msc, and "background intelligent background service" was set to manual, which I changed to "automatic - delayed start." I rebooted again. No change. Still a red X by Windows Updates.

Any suggestions?

Just realized you already tried that.

CD ROM worked fine until I downloaded some Windows updates. I had a CD in the tray that didn't eject..system stuck in a loop. Solved that but next time I inserted a CD the system went back into a startup "unstable" loop. On checking the CD ROM Device Mgr. properties, it says "This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed". I clicked the update device driver wizard..it says the best driver available is already installed. The CD tray works find but inserting a CD puts the system in a shutdown mode and on rebooting puts it back in an "unstable" loop. How do I get it back to operating properly? Thanks for any help. (MS says it's not their problem!)

A:CD Rom disabled during Windows Upgrades

First thing I would do is to remove the CD ROM drive from the device manager. Then reboot the computer. Let windows detect it and reinstall the drivers for it. If you are still having the same problem you may need to update the drivers for the drive. However, I have never had to update drivers for cd rom.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315345The suggested solution calls for editing the registry. While editing the registry gives you access to a wealth of options that may not be offered to you through the user interface, it also gives you the means to completely mess up your system in the time it takes to reboot. As a precautionary measure, since things go wrong every day...any user considering editing the registry...should first back up the registry for possible future use. A manual backup creates a file of your registry information, which can be stored until needed, and restored to roll your registry back to a stable state in case of disaster. This also gives you the added security of being able to store the backup on removable media such as a floppy or CD to be kept until needed. An excellent program for doing such is ERUNT Registry Backup Tool - http://www.snapfiles.com/get/erunt.html .Louis

I've been trying to get rid of Internet Explorer 8 problems with acting real disturbing. and I thought I could use windows defender to find additional problems! I have AVG 9.0 anti Virus installed and Windows security essentials anti virus and spyware installed. Was thinking about uninstalling internet explorer and going with firefox to see if it stopped. Thank You Very much if you are reading this and can give me a hand. Cliff

When I go to my computer it has a 'BD-ROM Drive' but my DVD-ROM/CD-ROM drive does not appear. I tried putting a CD but nothing happens.

Under device manager I have a CD-ROM drive enabled but below that is 'PBDS DVD+-RW DS-8W1P ATA Device which when I click says this device is disabled (Code 22). I try to click 'enable device' but when I go through the troubleshooting wizard is says windows cannot enable the device.

Can anybody help me? I just want to upgrade my Windows 7 Beta 7022 to 7048 but can't do it without my CD-Rom drive.

I want to get his fixed but if I cant would I be able to upgrade Windows 7 from Vista (I'm running a dual-boot) or will that write over my Vista partition?

Make sure to install your chipset drivers for your DVD drive to be recognized. Also the BD-ROM drive you're seeing is virtual courtesy of elby CloneDrive elby Free Software

Hi comonforall,

Have you ticked the checkbox above the compability dropdown menu? Or is that greyed out aswell?

Are you logged on as a normal user? If so, try logging on to an Administrator account. The feature might've been disabled for regular users.

Hello,
I disabled UAC and when I try to open Edge, Calculator, etc I get a window message that says that I cant open it with UAC disabled, I find it something very annoying that makes me think about going back to Windows 7, is there any around this?
In Windows 7 for example, I was able to open the calculator with UAC disabled.
Thanks!

A:Cant open any Windows App with UAC disabled

You cannot open any universal apps with UAC disabled, because Universal apps run in sandboxes that are based on UAC functionality. It was the same way in Windows 8.

Some apps have moved from desktop apps to Universal apps in Windows 10, such as the calculator. Edge is also a universal app. Settings is also a universal so, with UAC disabled, you can't access settings either.

Basically, disabling UAC cripples your computer now, and you can't run without it effectively.

Google has a list a mile long about a Netgear driver issue for Mrvgina (note the slightly different spelling.)
The description of the problem seem to match your problem.
The solution seems to be to go back to an earlier Netgear drive from disk-but you must read a Google item or two to determine a fix.

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.===Can you please post a Malwarebytes log so that I can see what is identified each time you run the tool.===Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:Link 1Link 2* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your DesktopDisable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
Some Rookit infection may damage your boot sector. The Windows Recovery Console may be needed to restore it. Do not bypass this installation. You may regret it.**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. I just booted my computer this morning and found that everything wasn't working like it was last night and for the past 1.5 years. I checked services.msc and found that almost everything was disabled, and there wasn't an option to start those services as the start/stop/restart buttons have been greyed out. I am currently running a virus scan using Microsoft Security Essentials in safe mode to try to find out whether this behavior is attributed to a virus attack. Can anyone provide me with any advice of what I should do? I can't use System Restore because the service has been disabled and there is no way of turning it on. Just FYI, all the programs configured to start in msconfig aren't starting as well.

I've had this problem on one computer and fixed it (but I can't recall just how I did it).  The computer reports that there are security warnings. The windows security service is not running and will not start.  In addition, the computer reports all downloads that allow fixes or remote access are viruses and are deleted.
There was a Google redirect but I solved that by doing a system restore back a couple of weeks.
I am not at that computer now, so from memory:
System--Win 7 Pro
Security--Norton internet security (360, I believe)

Hi,
My OS is windows XP SP3. I am getting windows security alerts.
I tried enabling the windows update by running services .msc but it simply didnt work.I got error 1058.Any Ideas how I can get this feature up without rebuilding my PC.

A:Windows Update is Disabled

It looks like you might be having a malware problem. This is what I have come up with after doing a nice search with google, and microsoft. I would recommend that you look at this Error 1058. I know that you have done the services.msc part, but try some of the other ideas.

Cheers!

I was trying a new restore point and the OS disabled my installed Avast antivirus.
I went back to the windows control trying a number of options and restarts to no avail.
Noted all this time I was never connected to Internet.
What am I doing wrong?

Aisea

A:Avast disabled by Windows XP OS

Hello aisea,

Try this;
Go to Control Panel > Add Remove programs, select 'Avast Anti-Virus' click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

If that does not help, uninstall, reboot, install again, reboot once more.

Hey

I just recently bought and installed AVG 9 Internet Security suit for my laptop and it was working fine. Then the other day when I upgraded my OS from Vista to Windows 7 I'm seeing that my firewall is disabled and I'm not able to enable it again. Why is this happening and how can I re enable my firewall?

Thanks

A:AVG 9 Firewall disabled in WIndows 7

OS Upgrades are tricky. You probably need to de-install and then reinstall AVG.

Windows 8 problem: I can no longer control my windows update settings because my computer has decided that I'm not an administrator and it will not let me change any of my user account settings (to administrator)!! I can only select "standard" user account settings, as the "change account settings" option greys out when I select "administrator".

I used to be able to update Windows 8 anytime I liked, and this is a recent change (within the last month).
Suggestions?

Hi -

ALL of your services cannot be disabled - or you would not even be able to boot, let alone get on the Internet.

SO which services are disabled and what problems are you having?

Hello,

I've been using Windows 8 for almost a month now and it's been great. But, since around 4am today (ICT), this popped out of nowhere: Windows goes to sleep despite the Power Options being set to disable sleep both while on AC power and on battery. I have also checked the Advanced Power Options as well, and it confirmed the settings. I only left the laptop for about half an hour just to come back and found out it has gone to sleep mode, and Event Viewer says the system went to sleep from being idle!! I've included a screenshot as well just to clarify that this isn't a sort of common mistakes. Please help!

Thanks!

A:windows goes to sleep DESPITE having been DISABLED

For a fail-safe stay awake I use Caffeine because windows INSISTS on being power efficient, which can be a good thing, but a pain.

Download Caffeine 1.5 Free - Prevent your PC from activating a screen saver or locking - Softpedia

I know this isn't a fix, but it's my preferred way of KNOWING 100% that it will not go to sleep.

This computer can't connect to any network via any adapter because all the networking services have been disabled. When I enable them and then attempt to start them I get the "error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start". When I reboot the services go back to disabled if I set them to automatic but if I set them to manual they remain manual but will not start.
I am sure there is a virus on this computer but Windows Defender has scanned and returned a "No viruses found" error.
It is not just the networking services that have stopped. I have attached an export of the services and their statuses see 20140804.txt

A:Windows 8 - Most services have been disabled

Windows Defender is basically for spyware/adware and is not a robust AV scanner. Download a portable AV and run that. You can find one here... http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/emsisoft-emergency-kit/ . You will need access to another PC to do this of course. Just copy it to a flash drive and move it to the PC in question.

I desperately require assistance. Ok, so it's not 'desperately', perhaps frustratedly (is that a word) is better.

Windows Vista 64

When I press the Windows Logo Key nothing happens.
Well, something happens, a small box above the task bar notifications comes up that indicates "Key Disabled".

I've tried just about everything I can think of:
Searched Microsoft
Searched countless sites
Tried a reg edit hack
Disabled UAC

I'm absolutly flabberghasted and down right disgusted with Microsoft. Not only for their idiotic implementation of such stupidity, but the total lack of documentation on the subject.

I kindly request your knowledge and technical assistance on this matter.

Thank you in advance, I appreciate you taking time out of your day to do what Microsoft should have already done.

Kind regards,

What major features/service did you turn off in W7?
System Protection (Restore) -> Until I get a bigger harddrive, I'll keep it off. It is space chewing and there are so many good free backup utilities there, I use Easeus backup personally and Macrium sometimes.

Windows Search (Indexing services) -> Search will be fast as long as your files are organized and the condition is okay.

Windows Defender -> NOD32 is fine.

How about you guys?
