Q: Problem Reports and Solutions Problem With Admin Privileges

Hello,

I've use Windows Vista on a laptop computer and have two accounts - a Standard account that I use everyday and an Administrative account.

I logged into my Administrative Account and clicked into Problems and Solutions and saw that the only thing I could click into on the left panel was "Change Settings."  Everything else is grayed out.  I clicked into Change Settings and saw a message with a pale yellow background that said, "Some settings are managed by your System Administrator."

I clicked into "Advanced Settings" and got the same message above with the yellow background.

Something is going on here and wonder if you can give me any information on how to change this back to me and tell me where I look to find out what/who has taken over as the Admin.

Thanks very much,
jenn59

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

Also let me mention the fact I use 1.5 GB DDR Ram in my system, Windows is giving me a Memory score of 2.4???????

Are you sure your memory is actuall running at DDR ? Some people buy the memory and never realize it sometimes does not "automatically" run at DDR. My motherboard requires that the memory go in certain slots. If you don't install it in the right place, it only runs at single-speed.

I keep hetting an error message and was browsing through my computer to see if I could find something to help. Under Control panel/System information I found a problem reports and solutions page.

Under the heading solutions to install there was nothing availiable but there was a secondary group called "information about other problems". There was a few availiable downloads here but when I tried to download a fix from the Intel page is siad that it wasnt for my particuliar system.

Also there is a download for a usb drive for my Garmin gps which I've never had a problem with.

I was wondering if these are neccessary things I need to download.

Can anyone tell me what the log file name is for all the problems reported? I am about to re-image a Toshiba, but want to print out the problems that were identified for the customer to see.

There area number of incompatible devices that have been used which have obviously de-stabilised the OP SYS.

A:issue with problem reports and solutions

Well, this may not be a solution but, have you tried using your Original CD Drivers?

If that doesn't work, I would boot in safe mode, uninstall the drivers for the mobo, restart and install from CD then since I am sure Vista will not be able to connect to the internet and look for the drivers since you won't have Ethernet capabilities. Once you load those drivers, it should let you connect and go to Asus site and download the new drivers then.

Another thing that we can do is upload the drivers for you in Rapidshare or any other host that you might be able to download from if everything else fails.

A:Never any solutions found for Problem Reports-Is it just me?

You will not get a personal answer just for you. Well I never have or have I heard of anybody ever getting a answer. My understanding of the way the system works is that Microsoft is gathering error information to analyze. If enough system have the same problem they will look for a cause and solution. These are just my thoughts and beliefs. I have no web sites or documentation to verify my thoughts and beliefs.
I'm kind of like Microsoft on this subject; don't have much useful information.

A:Error Message in Problem Reports and Solutions

Hi JazzMahn

Try seeing if System Restore can help. Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools- System Restore (or just type System Restore into the Start Search box on the Vista Start Menu, and press Enter). Choose a restore point from before ANY drivers for the Samsung were tried. Run the restore, and then see if Vista will recognize the camera -- just plug it in (don't provide any drivers, let Vista try things with it's built-in driver (that is likely what you downloaded from Samsung, but perhaps the download didn't go well - things can get corrupted).

If it still doesn't work, you can always enlist the aid of an inexpensive memory card reader (they only cost $5 to$10) --- here's an example --- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820609205 --- such readers are handy, as they can accept memory cards from all of your cameras. Just plug them in, insert your memory card - there you go.

Best of luck

To clear out your problem history the manual way go to
"C:\ProgamData\Microsoft\Windows\WER"

Inside you will see to folders - in which you simply delete the contents of both.

Check in the Action Center, under Maintenance. Look at Settings and Check for solutions.

Personally I don't think it makes any difference if you send the problem reports or not, so I've disabled it.
I'd worry more about the actual errors than that the problem reports aren't sent.

Hello,

The history doesn't seem to change. Looking at Event Viewer I see several ERROR level problems but I don't see them in the PR&S history.
I have these settings:
For all users turn Windows problem reporting on.
Choose a reporting setting for all users - Ask each time a problem occurs, is selected.
The block list is empty.
It is much easier to use PR&S than to scroll through event viewer's many logs.
How do I keep PR&S history current?
Thanks

If there's no software installed, where did the s385_drv.inf file come from? A google for this only reveals your post.

Is there any Samsung or Digimax software installed on your system? If so, remove it.
What does it say in Device Manger (go to start, type in "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter) about this device?
Have you tried to uninstall it in Device Manager?
There is also a possibility that this is an issue with the camera or the cord - can you try it in another computer to see if it works there (preferably a Vista system)?

The words opening solution... disappear and the screen is just blank with the Ask for help, Print Solution and check for solutions still there. The area where the solution should be is just blank and still says its loading when i mouse over it.

Hi.

The main (and only account) I have been using since the first beta came out had administrator privileges.

Today when I booted up I noticed that my account could no longer do things that are associated with an admin account, such as installing certain programs and writing to certain folders.

I created another account with admin rights and that account has the exact same problem. I tried removing the admin status on my account and putting it back on but that did not work.

Anyone else have this problem or have any advice on how to get my account seen as an admin account?

I'm having the same problem for quite a while now on Vista Home Premium. Problem Reports and Solutions can send error reports (I've already sent about 1400 of them), notifies me about new solutions to some problems it has found, but NEVER let me see the solution itself. How frustrating!!

I get the same gray screen as argi18.

Now some info about my investigations so far:
- it is not the firewall (tried with and without firewall running without success).
- It is not the internet connection (my laptop with the same version of vista connected to the same modem doesn't have that problem)
- Installing SP1 didn't solve the problem (I was secretly hoping it would...)

I really find this annoying because it is a quite helpful function. Also, looking over the internet for a solution, I found that more and more users are having this problem...

You cannot log in as an real admin. If UAC is not letting you past, there there is something wrong with the software or third party security software you may have installed. Where did you get this software and what is the name of it?

Open the security tab after right clicking on file or folder and choosing properties. Give your unique account permission by adding it. You have to actually type it and then check boxes too.

Then type.

I got a free computer via a local "Help" disability program (yeah me!) However, things are very different on this system (Win 7) than my old one (I have background from DOS 3.1 - Win XP). I don't know if I'm looking at Win 7 issues or something the computer providers set up (will call when I see replies to this post).

Although I am, as best I can tell, the Admin., several folders are not accessible to me (such as C:\Documents and Settings or C:\Users\All Users).

Do you folks believe that there is an Admin. setting that I fail to see or is it possible that my computer providers made some sort of master Admin. control setting?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

In Windows 7, Documents and Settings as well as several others in that folder are not real folders, they are Junctions that are there to allow legacy programs to interface to Windows 7's folder structure.

(Appdata is a hidden folder) to accomplish what Documents and Settings did in XP.

I am admin ( WIN 7 Pro 64 computer 4 years old): In admin user default account, any and ALL open, and .exe functions denied.

CMD right click 'run as admin' (net user admin etc.) has no effect. Checking all folders I show FULL permission. Right click 'run as admin' has no effect on any file.

Created new USER with ADMIN functions and all works in that account.

Q: How can I trouble shoot my normal ADMIN account (it has all of my 1000s of folders, programs etc.)
Q: Or how can I transfer all of my doc to my new user internally? (Without backup to external drive etc)

This happened after a Microsoft standard update weeks ago. I tried restore, but restore fails. By now I have done much on the computer and restore not an option.
I have not been able to open or run any program files.

Any help I would be grateful!

Wow. 2 days and not a single suggestion or reply?

Is this a really a simple common error? Is that why no replies? Or is there no help for it?

I searched the forums for hours over 2 days reading multiple posts and possible solutions and came up empty. Nothing applicable to my situation.

I have tried:
1. System restore. It always fails, even in SAFE mode or REPAIR mode.
2. Run as administrator (Both from right click and from CMD)
3. Sharing all folders (Although this ADMIN account has all privileges/permissions as it is anyway)
This created a 2nd ADMIN account. Don't know why.
4. Reset all privileges back to default settings.

Have not tried to re-install windows as I don't have a copy of Win 7. Plus I would like to avoid the reality of reinstalling so many programs and files.

Right now when the Original Admin user tries to run a .exe, I get a "Setup was unable to create the directory "...etc..." Error 5 access denied.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. It would at least get me moving trying some things. Thank you.

I left on vacation over the past weekend. Upon my arrival home, I went to my computer to check my mail. I noticed a second account but thought nothing of it on the log-in screen. Later, as I am trying to update my programs such as iTunes, I come to find out that my administrator privileges are gone. My roommate has confessed to changing adding an administrator account and demoting my account. However, the password he set was from a random password generator and is only recorded in a text file on the desktop of the admin account. How do I regain my administrative privileges on the computer and delete the other account?

Not a smart guy... that roommate of yours!

User Account Password - Change from WinRE

In step 7 do:

Code:
Now give the name_of_admin_account a new password so you can logon. Now you can give the other acount admin priviliges. You can delete the name_of_admin_account when logged on as admin account. Step 8 to 13 aren't needed of course

So if anyone has got a clue on how to fix this then please help me, I would appreciate it so much!

EDIT: It's exactly the same error for every program that I try to run. The only thing that isn't the same is the file path shown, it shows the program that I'm trying to run.

The prompt for Admin during installs is actually a good thing (that is the UAC and you REALLY want it to prompt) BUT you can almost always use any log in the Administrators Group

use CP->User Accounts

save and close

runas /user:$whatever$you$just$created cmd

it will then create the %profile% for that new user

From then on, you can reply with $whatever$you$just$created and its password

Hello.

I'm trying to inject an DLL with an old program, which worked fine before I re-installed. My old setup was Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 + All updates.

My current setup is the same, Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2 and all updates available through Windows Update. (except sp3)

However, it doesn't work. I think it's a privileges issue. My user account is "Administrator" and a part of the "Administrators" group. I've also enabled the "Debug Programs" privileges on my account, even though it's already on by default for administrators.

It fails on this function:

It just returns 0. Even though the HWND i'm passing to it is correct (checked, 100 times.)

any suggestions?

Is this possible? We have about 100 remote users who access our office network via VPN rather than RAS. All of these users are running either W2K or XP.

Our problem is that the internet settings on these laptops have been set (purposely) to automatically download updates from the Win Updates site. This bit works fine! But these updates cannot be installed as the users do not have administrator permissions on their local machine.

Is there a way of allowing these updates to install without giving the users full admin rights? (We REALLY don't want to give them these rights as suffice it to say that some of them are not as computer savvy as we would like.)

I have heard a little birdy say that there is a registry update which can bypass the above problem, but how and where?

Any advice on this will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks muchly.

Something has happened to our desktop.  Kaspersky has been unable to update databases; sent them a message and have attempted all steps they suggested but am unable to run anything.  Am not able to run or access anything as admin.  There latest email stated to send them screen shots of everything (have attached them)  Computer will not allow me to see users or change users.  Not sure what's going on.  Estimated to be having the problem for the past 2-3 weeks; coincidentally around the time Internet Explorer completely stopped working.

Hi

I seem to have lost admin rights/privileges on my account, even though it says i am an admin. I can't use windows update because of the following message. UAC is off.

I created another account and swapped admin privileges to that, and everything was ok, but as soon as i swap the privileges back to my original account, i get various 'this action requires admin rights' etc etc

I'm confused. I don't want to keep logging into another admin account just so i can use windows update.

I've tried this, but it said it couldn't fix all the problems. What can i try next folks?

Cheers

Just set up a new account. Give yourself privileges for the software in the first account. Make that the new account. The first account is corrupt

You can try this, too.

A:Running computer as someone without Admin privileges.

Not necessarily. A standard user account can be infected by some malware. But yes, it is a preventive measure and should be used.Read this : http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/create-new-user-account-in-windows-vista-7/I suggest, that you use Sandboxie and run your browser inside it. http://www.sandboxie.com/Sandboxie runs your programs (like your browser) in a totally isolated space, so even if a malicious site installs something, all you have to is clean the contents of Sandboxie. Some antivirus like avast! also have an inbuilt sandbox which run suspicious programs inside it automatically, preventing them to make actual changes to your computer.

Looked at User Accounts. Tried with and without User Account Control turned off.

Hallo,

I wrote a Script that uninstalls an application, move some files and install an Application.
The Script is working if I start it as Admin (right click - run as Admin ...).
Everything works fine.

But I want to have it working without the "run as".
The script is only used in a separated Test system,
so there is no problem if the Admin user name and password is in the script.
(also link wouldn't work, should also work if it moves to another station within the test domain)

Is there a way to manage that?

Batch command runas with a standard trick
it is NOT going to work, because the password should be entered manually.

If you do not mind clicking Yes in UAC window you can use Elevate.exe
With it you won't need writing password anywhere
"C:\yourFOLDER\elevate.exe" "C:\yourScriptFOLDER\yourScript.bat"
would be enough to start script with admin privileges (still need to click YES on UAC window).

When users with admin privileges have ownership of files and folders, do those files and folders remain, or are they deleted?

This question arises from having tried to copy my primary admin profile to that of a new (backup) admin user. During that tedious and unsuccessful process, I had to change ownership and privileges of a number of folders and files, and now some of my programs are having trouble finding needed files. So rather than wading through everything and changing the settings back, I'd prefer to delete the new admin user -- as long as I won't lose the files.

Does that even make sense? (It's way past my bedtime!)

Make copys of all the files you want to keep or use an admin account and pull the files onto the account you wish to keep then delete the old one. As long as you have a copy that you have privileges to on the account you are going to keep you should be fine, just make sure to keep a copy of all the files that you can get into.

First, on the admin account, enable (temporarily or otherwise) UAC: User Account Control - UAC - Change Notification Settings

Then go into the limited account and change whatever you would like, with your admin user name and password handy.

Hi everyone,

I need some help regarding removing restrictions on a secondary drive, drive D: on xp. I have admin privileges on the account i'm using. I was trying to restrict drive D for another user.. and instead it's my own account that got restricted!

This is what i've done,

1) Went to tools>folder options>view>unchecked simple file sharing

2)Then right clicked on drive D: > security tab and removed access from drive for that particular user..

now.. it's my own account that's restricted..

i created another account.. admin.. to see if the drive can be accessed from another one, and yes it can.. it's just mine that is restricted :/

I tried to change all the settings to full control on my account.. i changed the ownership too.. yet it's not working :s I'm lost and not tech savvy at all

would formatting remove the restrictions on that drive?

Of course I swapped out the real computer name and user name, and I've tried working with the existing shortcut pinned to the taskbar, so I know I've got the correct file path. Is there another way - that isn't too complicated - to do this?

All seems well except for the Account Unknown. I guess #1 is the hidden admin account, #'s 2 & 3 are the named user accts.

There was an account named updatususer. Research shows that this is an nvidea update service account. I removed it from the admin account (still can't create a new user).

in a cmd window, 'net user' returns only users #2 & #3. User #3 is the local admin account without privileges.

Any ideas as to what the Account Unknown user could be (if it's even pertinent to the issue)? I thought it might be the guest account, but it's not turned on.

Background:
XP Home got corrupted on my wife's laptop when I uninstalled SP2 after she unknowingly installed it via Windows Update and it started breaking stuff. I did a Repair using the OS CD-ROM provided by the laptop maker, and that fixed most of the problems. I have encountered a curious problem at work. All clients use limited users and in this case there's a Windows 7 on x64 on which I don't have privileged access at all. The normal behaviour, as far as I know, is that when I try to access something that needs administrator privileges, a window shows up and asks me for a privileged user's password. There are two users on the machine (a user called "Admin", the other one being the limited user) and I expect this behaviour (the password windows popping up) when trying access something that needs privileges - this is what happens at home, for instance, as I don't use a privileged user for security reasons.
Any suggestions on how to make that window pop up?

Hi,

I sometimes need to VNC to users machines to install Active X as I have admin rights while basic users dont. At present I log the user out and log in with my account and do the install.

Is there a way I can access my admin privileges without logging the current user out?

Regards
Paul

How to restore admin user privileges? Cannot download purchased McAfee software because admin user privileges are blocked by the MalwareBytes logo. McAfee techmaster advised me to contact HP to reset admin privileges. I was told I had to purchase their security system to fix it. HP advised me take PC to Office Max for them to reset; but I would lose all stored documents. Will I lose documents if I do a restore myself?

Hi this is my first post in the forum I hope this is in the right place.

My problem is that i have lots of laptop users off site and occasionally they'll need to install something.

To let them do this I've had to let them all have administrative privileges on their laptops and because of this they are downloading games and P2P software and all kinds of annoying things.

What i need is a way to be able to let them install off-site but only when i want them too, or maybe remotely doing it for them . I'm not really sure where to start at fixing this problem I'm hoping some of you have some ideas?

I'm going to let a technician have my Windows 7 64bit PC in order to do clone the HDD to a SSD and then replace the HDD with the SSD. I think the techn wants an admin level account. I am concerned that (s)he not gain access to confidential files etc that would be available to me were I logged in. Is there a way to let the tech have admin access (s)he wants w/o having to be concerned about the privacy of the info on it? Can you create an admin level account which deprives its user from gaining access to files on a certain directory under c:\users

Acerman why don't you clone the drive yourself it is really not that hard with Macrium Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

See my pic it shows the process but remember the drive you clone to has to be as large or larger than the drive you are cloning from.

There is a way of dragging and dropping the partitions into a smaller drive but it is not reliable enough for me.

The alternative is to image your drive slip a new one in - install the system using this
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 and then use the image to get back your data. As you seem to be concerned that you have data that you do not want to be copied or whatever. That is so easy if you know how and I can and I am not a techie so the shop bloke would be more than capable of doing that.
