I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Problem with slow (impossible) disk image making on USB 2.0 external hard disk

This could be any issue causing your problem , software , usb drive may have errors on it / or ?
Imaging your 150 Gig via Usb will take time { Mine are about 40-50 Gig } Operating System And Programs Only.
I personally partition my main Drive eg: c:\ and d:\ and so only the operating system is on C;\
Then use the D;\ to store your personal files. , this way your c:\ wont keep growing in size as you are storing everything there.
If you cant actually do anything with the computer because of warranties as you stated "just serviced" , ask them why you cant Image Drive.
1/ Try another hard drive to backup to.{ Usb will always be slower } than directly connected to Mobo.
2/ Use Mini Tool Partition Wizard [ Free } to create another partition -
3/ Remove all Temp Files / Restore Points / etc with Ccleaner { Free ] -
this will reduce C:\ size to minimal size { defrag drive also }.
4/ Use any program to Image C:\ { I use Acronis }. to the D:\ Backup Folder.
5/ Then copy the image to any portable drive or external if need be.
6/ Use the D:\ for your personal files and folders as a backup also.
Sometimes you have to do things yourself - than rely on Service Centres and Costs.
If you run a Business then you claim all your costs incurred.
All this will take time but you will have backups and feel at ease.

I just recently backed up my desktop PC hard drive to a disk image on a second hdd using Macrium Reflect software However since I ve never tried restoring this data I really have no idea whether it will work should it be necessary Would it be practical to do a test Disk External Drive? Hard Image to Restoring restore to an external hdd I know these are relatively slow but it s just a test I only have about gb total including WinXP Pro SP I simply want to confirm that the restore will actually work The external hdd s ultimate use would be to simply host disk images Restoring Disk Image to External Hard Drive? Historically I ve only backed up what I considered critical data to a second hard drive I was willing to reinstall OS and programs on a new drive if it ever became necessary However since getting a notebook I was faced with the prospect of having to restore from a set of OEM recovery disks WinVista disk not included separately which would take forever as it installed tons of factory bloatware and other crappy stuff that I would end up having to remove I finally decided the time was right to back up both computers to disk images on an external hdd since this seemed a viable solution to avoiding the notebook recovery scenario The entire purpose of this drive would be to archive disk images from both computers with my desktop PC s second hdd used to backup the external drive This seems like a logical game plan but am I missing any potential pitfalls Opinions welcome nbsp

I use Windows 7 professional 64 bit edition. Im a novice user who is doing this for the 1st time.
I intend to use Macrium Reflect Free edition to store an image of my C drive which is the only partition I have, (931 GB ( of which 537 GB is free) ) on an external HDD which is of Sony, 1TB & Fat32 formatter.

But am I supposed to format the external HDD before attempting to create an image on it? The external HDD already has nearly 400 GB contents on it, & i cant wipe it off. Does the imaging process wipe it off? Or am i expected to do it, before starting the imaging process??

& also how much space is the image going to occupy roughly??

I'd be highly thankful if someone could guide me on this.. Please..

Hi, im having a problem trying to create a system image and store it in my external hdd.
This isnt the first time i use the windows backup to create a system image, ive done it before using this external hdd with no problems at all.
But now, for some reason it wont detect this hard drive, it only gives me the option to store the image on a dvd, i dont know why?, i tested the hard drive on a different computer and IT WORKS, i tried to create an image and it does work.

Heres a picture so you guys can see the problem:

sorry the image is kinda big, but as you can see on the left, windows DOES detect the hard drive, BUT when i try to create the image, it simply doesnt, it only gives me the dvd option.
i hope you guys can help me here, thanks a lot

A:Create system image won't detect external hard disk

You have not stated the App you are using to create the sysrem image. Please tell us.

I have experienced the same thing once in a way with Acronis but the issue always gets resolved by restarting Acronis. You may try to restart your imaging App to see if the matter gets resolved. But I suspect that you may have already done that to no effect.

The next thing to do would be to change your image back-up App. This might succeed. Please try it out and let us have the results.

Ok here is the deal and I don't know why it happened If someone can explain why this happens I'd be grateful For some reason the system hung froze at the Windows flag logo during start-up I know what caused it but I don't know why and would like to understand why I made a backup of the system image and backed it up on an external hard disk I restarted the computer and it hung at the Windows flag log The flag animation froze and the system become completely unresponsive The only way to shut the power down was pushing the power button to force computer to do a hard shut down Ie started the computer back up and it booted into the Windows Error Recovery screen I first chose the Start Windows Normally option and it froze at the Windows flag logo again I forced Image Startup? at Disk External Freeze on Forces Hard System the system to shut down by pushing the power button and chose the Launch System Image on External Hard Disk Forces Freeze at Startup? Startup Repair option when the computer booted back up Windows System Image on External Hard Disk Forces Freeze at Startup? was unable to repair the computer after two attempts and the computer recommended that I use a Restore Point to fix the error I chose the most recent restore point that I created earlier I System Image on External Hard Disk Forces Freeze at Startup? rebooted the computer and loaded into Windows just fine But to make sure everything was O K I restarted the computer again and it froze again at the Windows flag logo I shut the computer down and restarted it and the Windows Error Recovery screen appeared again The computer failed to repair the program chose my restore point again and when the computer booted back up I deleted the system image on the back-up hard disk and restarted the computer again and it booted up just fine I did this three times to see if we would get the same results every time For some reason the backed-up system image on the external hard disk would refuse to allow Windows to boot up and load properly Anyone know why this happened

Maybe your hdd have a lot of files so windows need a time to read it all.And try defragmenting it.

I have XP Pro; 1Gb RAM; Pentium III/700. Everything is going pretty well, but I have tried to perform a chkdsk. My internal hard disk is partioned as C and D; they "accepted" perfectly chkdsk in "normal times", but the 80 G external, that as a matter of fact, behaves perfectly, has taken more than three hours (until I stopped it) in the last revewing: the "files" = it practically stops in "2%"; other previous three ones's reviews took normal time. Is it just for the hard disk's size, or is it the sign that something is going wrong? Many thanks and greetings

Im getting really slow transfer speeds to external usb hard disk.
Transfering a big file it starts off quite quick and gets up to 5% or so quite quickly.
Then it starts to slow down until it settles at around 5MB/s

Im at a loss i was expecting around 40MB/s maybe on USB 2 ?

My specs are (taken from CPUID)
Gigabyte GA-MA780G-UD3H motherboard
8GB DD2 4-4-4-12 @401Mhz
AMD Phenom II x4 940 @ 3013Mhz

Im at a loss. Is it a driver issue? When connected it shows under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" as "USB Mass Storage Device"

any ideas please?

A:Slow transfer speed to external USB Hard disk?

For normal external USB 2 HDD I might expect ~30MB/s for a sequential file transfer.
What type of USB HDD are you using?

You could download CrystalDiskMark and post the performance figures.
Download Center - Crystal Dew World

Running the test on another HDD as well would be useful if you can get your hands on one. Might indicate a drive specific issue.

hi all,

i would like to ask you a very basic question:

What is the difference between an external hard disk and an internal hard disk mounted on external enclosure?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure risky in terms of loosing the data?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure reliable to use?

kindly let me know as there is a vast difference in the price of these hard disks. The external hard disk is costing more and if i use internal hard disk in external enclosure price is very much reduced.

my only concern about using internal hard disk in external enclosure is the reliability.

thanks in advance,

If I am saving a backup to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 USB external hard disk

1. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 3.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

2. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 2.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

A:Speed of saving to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 external disk?

There's no definitive answer, it would all depend on which internal drives you had (SSD/HDD, SATA 6GB, SATA 3GB) and which external drives you had and their relative transfer speeds. It's all just guesswork without that info.

Couple of hours ago my Windows 7 could not recognize my external USB hard disk (Maxtor Basic). It came up on Disk Management and Device Manager but not on My Computer. However I fixed it (by deleting its line off regedit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices, plugging out the ext. HD and plugging back in). Windows automatically installed the drivers and I could access the drive.

But now Windows shows my Maxtor as a fixed disk drive, instead of "devices with removable storage". I still have the option to "Safely remove hardware and eject media" from taskbar, however I rather have Windows treating it as a Removable USB Storage so that the disk can sleep when not in use. I am pretty sure it has something to do with regedit, so any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to Windows 7 Support Forums, Sactyr.
A word of caution! Its never a good idea to alter your register,
IMHO please review your device manager and check your devices for your disk drives, check for any warnings in the driver area.
I'm attaching my screenshot for comparison as I have a similar configuration.

I have a problem regarding my external Toshiba hard disk 500 GB where it can?t be detected in my computer and also disk management. I have formatted the external HD since I was asked to format it when an error popped up.
So I formatted it and after the formatting completed, I tried to connect the hard disk to my Windows Win 7 laptop. When I connect it to the laptop, it can?t be detected and yet the hard disk is blinking with its white light like it used to when it is connected to the laptop. I tried the disk management thingy, but it can?t detect my hard disk. I tried in other laptops but the result is same
What can I do to make it better? Please help me.

A:External hard disk not detected in My Computer and in Disk Management

First off, how old is your Toshiba external HDD? Also, when it starts to spin up, do you hear any sort of clicking or whining noise?

If you hear any noises that sound off, it's possible your external HDD is failing.

When you formatted it, what file system did you use to do so? Because sometimes even if Windows can't detect it, I have had success with booting with a Ubuntu Live CD, and then connecting the external HDD in order to format it that way. It all has to do with how Windows formats HDD's and how Ubuntu and other Linux systems do.

If you can I recommend downloading Ubuntu onto a CD and boot to it on one of your computers, in the Live CD mode, so it doesn't install anything. Once its loaded, plug in the Toshiba and try to format it as NTFS (this is important, because Ubuntu doesn't use it as a native file system, so you need to make sure that NTFS is selected on the format window, not EXT4 or the other types of Linux OS File Systems)

If it doesn't work, post back here, and I will see if I can help you some more. Also feel free to PM me if you have any other issues.

I have an external hard disk which got corrupted. When i connect the disk through USB it shows as an unknown device in the disk management with no option to format.

In My computer the device is showing as H: drive but unable to access it. It asks if i want to format or not but when i go for format it does not do it. I want to erase the disk completely as of now. What should i do??

I tried to load it from linux but there it shows as Device Error. Disk Failure is Imminent.

Can something be done or is it a hardware failure.

A:External Hard disk showing as RAW in disk management

Sounds like the drive is failing or the circuitry in the enclosure is faulty.

I would first remove the drive from the enclosure and hook it up as a slave to a desktop PC. See if you can then access it. If you can, then post back for further instructions with the version of your OS.

Hi guys,
need some help, everytime I try to remove a USB hard disk I get a message saying it is not possible because some program is using it.
There is no program (to my knowledge) using the disk, I've tried to wait about half an hour then I got the same message again.
I disabled write-caching for the disk so I can (in theory) unplug the disk without safe-removing it, nonetheless I'd really like to know what is causing the problem and fix it.
The disk is connected to the PC via a USB hub.
I have no issue in removing USB flash drives.
Any suggestion?

This is usually due to a process accessing the drive. See this excellent post by jcgriff2 on tracking down the process that may be causing the problem.

A:Laptop Hard Disk to Hard Disk transfer Extremely Slow

My experience with file transfers of the type you that the number of files doesn't matter...what matters is how large the files are.  Video files take much longer than text or document files.
Slow transfer rates between partitions/drives...can indicate a problem with either the partititon or the drive, IMO.

Dear frnds,

I have been using my external hard disk(WD My Passport Essential SE) 1 Tb, since last 6 months, but after a recent virus scan, my laptop is not showing the external hard disk, i have tried using My computer, Manage and Disk management.

I am unable to find external hard disk even in Disk management i.e. it is not showing.
So please can anyone help me in this concern......
I would really appreciate and thanks in advance

A:Problem with my external WD 1TB My Passport hard disk

First, try accessing it from another computer to be sure it can be accessed elsewhere. The Western Digital Passport Essential has had a pretty high failure rate as seen in our shop... so the unavailable external hard disk may not have anything to do with the virus scan may have nothing to do with the problem.

In other cases, I would attempt to reinstall the Passport drive. You do not usually cause any damage to the data on the drive when you do this.

I have restarted my computer now and it became shown in my comupter. However, it still has a question mark on it in the other devices list in the devices manager.

A:Toshiba external hard disk problem?

The best way to test the drive is to remove it from its case and connect it to the internal wiring of a desktop PC and see if it operates OK. Often the problem is simply the power supply or a failure in the circuitry in the external box.

A:Problem while connecting external hard disk

What type of external HDD are you trying to connect? Is it a 2.5" laptop style hard drive or a 3.5" desktop style hard drive? All 3.5" desktop hard drives will require an external power source to connect them via USB. Your computer seems to be a newer computer so power at the USB ports should not be a problem for a 2.5" laptop hard drive. You can try a power boosting Y-cable like this:
USB 2 0 A Female to 2 Dual USB Male Hub Power Adapter Y Splitter Cable Cord SGCC | eBay

That will split the power draw between two USB ports if you have two USB ports next to each other on the computer.

Even the Y-cable will not work for a 3.5" hard drive, though, it requires it's own real power supply.

Okay so here goes,
I purchased a seagate freeagent 320 gig external. Its working well but I have a problem ejecting it. I right click on the remove hardware, I click on stop and then comes an error... cannot eject generic volume, please try again(something of that sort) (made sure no other hard drive or usb pen drive was connected), This happened several times, I also made sure no other program was making use of this disk... then i dirctly unplugged it out of frustration

A:Solved: Problem with my external hard disk

Did you try running a program to verify no files are being used by the drive when you try to remove it?

If not try OpenedFilesView:

"OpenedFilesView displays the list of all opened files on your system. For each opened file, additional information is displayed: handle value, read/write/delete access, file position, the process that opened the file, and more... "

You can click the column header of open files to alpha sort all them - which should make it easier to identify files on the drive in question since they will be sorted by drive letter.

Hi folks,

There is a tutorial on the forums which shows how to use windows 7 (i presume) to make a full disk image backup for restore purposes.

My first question: is this disk image the same as one which would be produced by say norton ghost?

Is win7 the first Microsoft os to
Have this feature built in?

If so i presume there is no longer a need for 3rd party ghosting apps (other than those folks not using 7?)

Basically I need to make an image of a drive before I install win 7 so does anyone have any recommendations of a good ghosting prog - preferably free. Otherwise I guess I'll need to buy one online tonight

A:Making a disk image - for backup

The disk image created by Win 7 is not the same as that created by Ghost in that the two images would not be identical bit-for-bit. However, when images are restored by their respective programs the end result would be the same, a fully restored disk.

As far as I know, Win 7 is the 1st MS OS to include disk imaging but I'm not 100% certain of that.

There will always be a need for 3rd party apps because they have different features or they're faster, better interface, more intuitive, etc...

One free imaging program that gets recommended a lot on these forums is Macrium Reflect. I've never used it but I understand it's pretty decent.

I've had my Acer Aspire 5310 laptop for a few months now with Windows Vista. I have an 80GB hard drive, partitioned into two drives as default.

Until now I've never noticed that the numbers didn't add up. I know when you buy and 80GB hard drive, it should actually show up as less due to bits and bytes and what not (80GB=74GB roughly) but I found something fishy in Disk Management. There is a drive showing up with no letter assigned to it which is nearly 10GB in size and after doing the math it accounts for the 10GB i lack after adding my two 32GB hard drives together.

So I have 2 x 32GB drives plus this weird drive which is 10.

I have attached the screenshot of disk management.

If anyone knows what is going on here I would very much appreciate it!

Cheers, Darren (newbie)

A:Problem with Vista Disk Management/Being robbed of hard disk space!

has this just recently appeared? This is a longshot, but if you have Kaspersky lap installed then that could be the problem. It autologs roughly 10 gigs of data without your permission, it is easy to get rid of, but annoying none the less.
However this doesn't seem to likely as what seems to have happened here is that you have accidently split one of your hard drives into two. Either that or a program like deamon tools has created a virtual drive. Do you use either deamon tools or alcohol 120?

A:Can't format hard-disk nor do partition when using boot disk. Hard-disk failure

It sounds like it might be the bootable CD you've created is not picking up the HDD's/partitions.
To eliminate this as a posibility travel to bootdisk and grab the WinME bootdisk and boot from there. If it picks up the HDD you can FDISK and Format from there.
The other option is to boot using the XP CD and let it handle the formatting/partitioning duties...

Yes, it's possible. Navigate to the file/folder you want to create a shortcut to. Right click, on the popup look for "Send To". See if your other drive is an option. If so, click it. It it's not, then choose "Create Shortcut". That shortcut will appear. Then right click that shortcut and "Cut". Navigate to where you want the shortcut and then "Paste". You can then (If you want) right click the shortcut and "Rename".

my pc is so slow in internet browsing and gaming because of high disk usage.

so i checked resource monitor and found out more than half of my ram goes to standby and only 1 mb in free

so is there anyway to disable standby memory?

A:page file causes high disk usage and making my pc slow

I would let windows manage your physical memory and page file it's very good at that and put the page file back it can be important for physical memory allocation sometimes .

Windows 10 page file to ram compression allocated size is insignificant anyway .

You didn't mention if all this web browser drama was during multitasking ,what browser and how many tabs open or what other conditions are present like GTA 5 which can use up a decent Core X or AMD FX CPU on high settings ? all these variables can even stall (nearly so ) my Haswell core i5 @ 8 GB ram on an SDD if taken to an extreme .

OTOH an SSD with a windows boot drive would be a stonking good upgrade on a core i3,i5,i7 ,AMD FX or any PC (even on an old PC with only 300 GB/s SATA II maximums and move things along considerably faster with less stalling and hanging , rember also that SSD will speed up any data written to or cached to the SDD or fetched off a metal HDD like this Haswell Core i5 Sata III 6GB/s dual boot PC in my specs ,yours is ofc SATA III 6 GB/s potential also but not anthing close to half of that on metal here is my SDD I/O :

I have Windows 7.

A:How to image Windows from hard disk to another

Hm, I'd double check with someone more senior than I but it sounds like you want to start by repartitioning Drive #1 to accomodate the migrated partition from Drive #2. Once you have a nice little nest to copy #2 to, go ahead and use some drive imaging software - I personally use a copy of HDClone (I think the only difference between free and pro is free copies ridiculously slow - but that just insures a good copy, eh?) to clone your partition from #2 to #1. Once there, you're most likely going to have to run fixmbr from a Windows repair prompt to make sure your boot.ini reflects the new drive and partitioning scheme.

Hope that was clear!

was wondering if there is any software that can backup and make a bootable image of a partition of hard disk - everything - including OS / installed programs / folders.

Important part is making bootable image. So in case OS goes corrupt/ hdd fails - just running that bootable image can restore everything. Once you keep a secure copy. you do not have to worry anymore.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Yes Inspiron15 you can create an image of your C drive completly. Most image creation programs also create a bootable cd/dvd that will then allow you to restore your saved image to your c drive.

There are a few free ones, I use acronis image backup and windows 7 comes with an image backup program that works.

All of the image creation programs require you to boot a cd/dvd that is created by the program to do a restore.

Most will clone a drive to an external one so that you can just replace your c drive with the clone and your back in business.

This is dheeraj kulal. i have a problem with external hard drive.

I copied all the data from my pc to an external hard drive(FAT 32). Then i formatted the PC hard disk and created 5 partition with 50GB each. Installed windows xp SP2.
External hard disk is of 500GB. Had nearly 250GB of data in it before copying data from my PC hard drive. After copying data from PC hard drive only 30GB of free space left in external hard disk.
Now the actual problem is the external hard not showing any of the files that i copied on to it. and few of the files already in it are missing too. But when check the property of external hard disk it shows only 30GB is free that means remaining are the data in it.

please help me,, files are very very very important for me... wt to do

for PC's there is a event viewer, what about external harddisk's?

A:how to know when was my external hard disk was used?

Hello and welcome to the sevens forum.

First I don't think you can tell when your external hard drive was used, unless you have something on your system that would tell you if it was used or messed with your kind a out of luck so to speak.

You can always set up a password on your external hard drive to lock people out.

hello guys,
first of all im using win 8,1 64 bit .
its been some time that i cant install the windows updates.
when i hit install and it says that is downloading the updates it freezes.
so without the new updates i see that i cant safely remove my hard disk(external)
so im removing my external hard drive just like that
and today my 2tb seagate external became raw(one of the two partitions)
i really need your help here to restore the disk to its normal status and find a solution with win updates cause i dont want this to happen again.
wating asap for your answer
thanks in advance

A:raw external hard disk

Firstly, I would not have the external drive attached when doing updates.
That being said I would download Testdisk for Windows and unzip the file to a folder on your desktop. Run Testdisk and do a QuickSearch. After a QuickSearch does it detect both partitions on the external drive? Highlight the RAW partition and press the "P" key. Do you see your files on the RAW partition?
Windows  This is the file to download
If doing a QuickSearch does not detect both partitions then do a deeper Search.
Do you have enough space on your internal drive to copy the files from the RAW partition?

Even though it appears you're having the same problem, please start a new thread. It's very difficult to keep two problems straight and who's working on what in a single thread. Thanks for your cooperation.

Please post complete details on your environment and we'll be glad to help you out.

If it's just a formatting question, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management, and you can partition and format the drive there.

well, my external hard disk was working just fine then it started showing as "local disk E" and i couldn't open it. I searched online for a solution and did the "chkdsk" thing and it worked again. few hours later the problem game back.. this time what i did before didn't solve it. it only made the contents of the hard disk appear but i couldn't use it .. so i copied some of the small files i needed from my 300 gb of data on it. now it's back to the "local disk e" thing and i can't even use cmd while the hard is connected. is there a way to solve it or at least copy my files from it?
Edit: now i can't even use cmd or disk management or my computer when the disk is connected

The instructions say I should stop it when closing down pc but when I select it on remove hardware icon it just says 'this device cannot be stopped now, try later' even though I have no programs open that are using the disc. Will it cause damage if I leave it on and just close down. Have done this a couple of times but wonder if I will damage it.

You may like it for it's ease of use and abilities. You may not want it because you feel Win 8 should work as you want without it. Decision is yours. I just give the info.

I have a Sony VAIO Model # PCV-RS530G...It came with a 120GB Hard Drive
Partitioned into C&D...C Drive is 13.9GB with 900MB Free.
D Drive is 129 GB with 17GB Free.
I purchased a second Hard Drive to expand my storage capabilities. It is a WD 160GB Hard Drive. I made 2 Partions J Drive 80GB and K drive 69GB...
My goal is to mirror my C Drive onto the J Drive Then make the New Hard Disk the master so that it now becomes the C drive and I would then have more Free space on my C Drive. Then once that is complete, format the original drive and create Just 1 partition (120GB) for Storage. I tried using True Image but it wants to mirror the entire Hard Disk. Is there a way to do what Im trying to accomplish and if so what software can I use?

A:Solved: Trying to Image C Drive to new Hard Disk

Open up your case and see if you have a second connector between your hard drive and your motherboard.
If so, insert your new drive in and connect as slave.
Grab a copy of xxClone and clone C onto J. Be sure to use the CoolTools section to make J bootable.
Upon completion, switch your drives, go to Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools and use Disk Management on your new slave to redo the drive.

Hi, I realized that my usb 3.0 external WD hard drive gets disconnected upon an attempt to transfer files into or out of it. Tried connecting a usb 2.0 external WD hard drive and it worked with no issue. Worst off, the 3.0 drive was unable to be detected by the computer although it is rotating with its light indicator ON. I have tried various power management adjustment based on a google search. But the problem still persists. Any advise? Thanks.

hello guys ,
i have a 1 tb external HD and it used to work perfectly until 5 days ago . the HD takes forever to load and if i didn't wait for it to fully load and tried to enter one of the files it tells me that windows explorer is not responding and everything disappears for like 20 seconds ( i can only see my wallpaper). the HD fell down from me but it wasn't a hard fall and the problems didn't start right after the fall .
so guys can anyone help ?
and sorry for the terrible english.

A:problems with my external hard disk

You might want to run a diagnostic check on your external hard drive to see if that fall damaged it. You could check on the manufacturer's website for a diagnostic tool or you could run SeaTools from Seagate.

SeaTools for Windows | Seagate

If any issues are discovered it may be time to save your data and replace the hard drive.

I have problem with my SATA disk. I used to connect it by USB to my hp530 (notebook) in Windows 7.
But now it needs formatting and type is not NTFS but RAW. And it has no size! I tried program TestDisk, but it writes: "the harddisk (750 GB / 698 GiB) seems too small! ((1500 GB / 1397 Gib). Check the harddisk size: HD jumpers settings, BIOS detection... and that cannot be recovered". Problem was caused probably by voltage in USB (no viruses, no new installs). I tried another computers.

This HDD is 750 GB, not 1500 (I donīt understand, why is there 1500). I donīt want help how to save data or how to format this disk. I need you help to get disk back useful and with no change in data. I hoped that testdisk will help me, but I donīt know what can I do with that "harddisk seems too small".

Can somebody help me? :-(

What is the safest way to protect data on an external hard drive, when using the hard drive on computers other than your own.

Is there a good recommended software I can use to encrypt my hard drive and have it available to be decrypted on another computer and to keep all the encryption software on the same drive?

I have heard of some simple security programs that come with some hard drives, but I'm looking for an open source or similar solution that is well documented in terms of security.

I would like to take a 1 terabyte hard drive around to different places and I want to protect my information.

My home computer is Windows 7 Professional and I will use windows computers elsewhere also. What kind of portable software is available?

Or ... did I answer my question. Is the best bet, to simply encrypt files with something like pgp?

A:Safe use of external hard disk

I am not one of the security people, but I have learned a trick and use it myself. If possible turn off the Hard Drive at night. Those creeps out there writing, virus and trying to steal information often work at night, because you are probably asleep and will not notice unusual activity on your computer. In addition if you turn off the hard drive at night, and when not in use, less chance that a virus caught will spread to the hard drive, when you initially catch it.
