When I open Windows Explorer I and go to my Picture File, the Thumbnails don't always show correctly. I can open Windows Explore and see no Thumbnails displayed but if I open another copy, it's better but not all come up. I have multiple folders, some display no thumbnails (a blank white sheet), others show a few and others show more. I also get a green bar at the top that never finishes. Sometimes, I open Explorer, and if I try to expand the Folder Tree on the left panel it won't expand, The Files are on an External Flash Drive. I've tried many troubleshooting searches for the problem so yes, I have the Folder Option, "View" set to "Display thumbnails." This is a recent problem. One last thing, the computer seems as it's freezing and not updating the thumbnails, but currently the CPU usage is only 4% under Task Manager.
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Did you make any changes to your Windows Operating System recently? Sounds like the aftermath of a "tune up" that went wrong.
That being said, the data that has no thumbnails.... can you open them and view the data, I'm curious to know if it's corrupted.
Windows explorer on my system cannot display all the thumbnails my photo folder. When the pictures are copied to a newly created folder, all are initially shown. However when I access the folder later, a lot of the thumbnails are gone : only the default
icons are shown.
I have set folder options to Always show icons, never thumbnails.
I have even tried deleting the thumbnail cache and rebuilding the cache but to no avail.
Could anyone help me on this please?
Thanks.

http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/223896-vista-64-not-showing-avi-thumbnails-explorer.htmlI have checked in the only two places I was aware of that would cause this:
Folder Options - View ....however, there is no option there to check show Thumbnails. I believe this option should be there at the top, but it isnt.
I also went to Properties of My Computer, Advanced, Performance. It is checked there to show Thumbnails.
But for whatever reason, I only see icons when I should see thumbnails. And yes, I have changed the view to Medium, large, extra large.
Hello Dave,
You might double check through each option in the tutorial below to see if it may help. It's for Windows 7, but it's the same in Windows 8 except "Windows Explorer" is "File Explorer" in OPITION FOUR instead.

Hi,
I know there are some threads about this. but I couldn't solve my problem using those. so I decided to make a new thread instead of bumping the old ones.
Well, Here is my problem:
recently I installed a fresh copy of windows 8 on my PC. it was nothing wrong with it till I installed Kaspersky Endpoint Security 10 (v. 10.1.0.867) & did a reboot.
Now non of my files including picture, audio & video files show thumbnails or even tags (ex mp3 files).
I've tried the solutions stated about turning thumbnails on & off with no luck. in my folder options the option "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is UNCHECKED.
Has anybody faced the problem?? Is the issue from Kaspersky?? Are there any workarounds??
I truly Appreciate any help.
PS. I also have some difficulties pinning folders to windows explorer taskbar icon since then.

I have Windows 7 ultimate 64bit, I just upgraded from professional, when I had professional, all of my videos had thumbnail previews. Now, just about zero do. Is there a way to get this back to the way it was before? For example, I use VLC as my default player to open vids and it is just the cone, no thumb. The same goes with WMP
Crap, there's a way to rebuild thumbnails, maybe that's it, but I forgot how, heh. You're not exceptionally low on disk space, are you? Give me a second I'll find out about refreshing the thumbnail cache.

Hey Man.
When Im having problems with the system i do this:
Open cmd as administrator and then type "sfc/scannow" press enter
I will check your system for missing systemfiles and problems.
Give it a try and let me hear from you
My original problem was this: whenever I double-clicked on a thumbnail in Windows Explorer, the picture would open up in Paint Shop Pro but when I wanted another picture to come up in the PSP application that was already open, it would open up another PSP instead.
I thought I found a solution to this after looking online (can't remember exactly what it was now but I entered something in start, run) only now I have another problem because I can't view any thumbnails in Windows Explorer.
Can anyone help me get my thumbnails back and also solve my problem with PSP opening up lots of times for every photo I want to view? Thanks!
Okay, I've found a solution to the thumbnails not showing up - did start, run and then regsvr32 thumbvw
I'm still having several PSP's opening up when I want to view several pictures though... any ideas anyone? Please?
For all my photos, unless I view them in "Windows Photo Gallery which is inconvenient -- I want to view them in Windows Explorer, I do not see real true thumbnails, I just see this default scene of water, green hills and sky. I have followed the instructions here Thumbnails in Windows Explorer here Default Programs - Program Default Associations (tho I wasn't thrilled about making Windows Photo Gallery my default program for JPG, I followed these instructions anyhow). I NEVER had a problem like this in XP. I'm beginning to understand why Vista has such a bad reputation. Using (or attempting to use) Vista Home Premium 64-bit, BTW, (much less important question) why doesn't my Photoshop Elements even show up as an option when I set default programs? Any help is appreciated. This problem was annoying before but to still have it after going thru all these forum instructions is really annoying.
Hello Angelag, and welcome to Vista Forums.
You can use Open With on the file type and browse to the Photoshop Elements exe file to have it open the file type with that program by default instead.
Have you checked the View settings in Windows Explorer to see if it is set to either Medium Icons, Large Icons, or Extra Large Icons to see a thumbnail preview of the file image as the icon?

How do i look at the actual images when i choose thumbnails in windows.
I used to be able to see the pictures when i chose the thumbnail options, but all i see now is the type of icon they are. for ex. the gif or jpeg icon.
I don't know if i did something or not.

Hi I have been fighting with this since I purchased this notebook with Windows Updating thumbnails in Explorer Windows in I do a lot of photo editing I may have around K image files on my computer When I am doing a lot Updating thumbnails in Windows Explorer of editing a problem arises as the thumbnails do not update in window explorer So if I am working on Updating thumbnails in Windows Explorer several images and will open and reopen files if I have made an improvement on a file the thumbnail will not update and it gets confusing trying to find a picture that I have just edited I have sought suggestions on this issue a dozen different times When I troll through forums this is a common problem Here's a spoiler alert cleaning the thumbnail cache does not fix the problem Matter of fact here is a classic cookbook recipe on how to fix this from another forum http www sevenforums com tutorials Updating thumbnails in Windows Explorer -thumbnail-cache-clear-reset html As usual the answer is never found and the solutions move from the sublime to the ridiculous Since Bleeping is my favorite stop I thought I would seek an answer here rather than letting Google find another false positive to my question Thanks
My experience is that the thumbnails reflected by Explorer view...only update when the folder/Explorer window is opened.
I suppose that using a photo album, rather than explorer, might result in the desired updated images you seek.
I tend to give any edited image a new filename, keeping track of them in that manner while also retaining my originals.
Louis
Not matter how many times I let Explorer build the thumbnails, after any reboot or shutdown/power-on the thumbnails get erased and I have to rebuild them again. It happens with all images and videos the same. Any idea why is this happening?
IMO, Windows 8 is definitely cool, but it has some rough edges that should've been ironed out before prime time.
I too experience these behaviour. everytime I open Explorer (File Explorer on Windows 8) it always loads the thumbnails it doesn't save...
any ideas guys?
Hi
Is there a way to view HDR's as thumbnails in Windows Explorer, seems you need to download the latest Directx SDK
I have Direct x11:
Operating System: Windows 7 ?dition Int?grale 64-bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 880 @ 3.07GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.1GHz
Memory: 12288MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 12248MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
Graphic: Geforce GTX 460
Any suggestions?
Thank you very much for your time
I don't see how DirectX is involved in displaying HDR images. Where are you getting that notion?
What are the extensions on the files you are trying to thumbnail?
When I click on thumbnail view in windows explorer I don't see the pictures just the name of the file and a placeholder?
What OS?
See if the link to restore thumbnails on the right side of this page helps...

It first started to happen only in my pictures but now has occurred in my documents or any other folder with pics or videos. If I view files in list view everything is ok but I don't like this view. When my documents open in thumbnail view, it takes only a few second for that "we are sorry for the inconvenience" message to show up and so I press don't send which closes windows explorer. I copied all files in my documents into a external hard drive and the same thing happened.
Is there a corrupt file causing this? is so then how do I find it. I have tried scannow in cmd which didn't work.
Or is the problem with windows xp files?
thanks
Things I've tried:
1. I have Haali Media Splitter installed (from CoreAVC) options>>explorer integration (yes)>>Thumbnails offset (10000)
2. WMP Playback Pack
3. DivX Preview
None of those worked. I'm running Windows 7 Professional. The KMPlayer is the default to play my MKV files (works great), but I can change that to Windows Media Player if needed to show the details and thumbnails. Any suggestions?
And I can't install DivX Plus Codec Pack like other people have recommend because my laptop isn't connected to the internet (no wireless). To install the other things I've just put the installer on a USB and then installed them from the USB onto my laptop.
They used to. Now all that appears when View is set to "thumbnails" is the Adobe PDF icon.
I used both Jaws PDF Creator and Acrobat 6 to create the PDFs, still no thumbnails appear in Windows Explorer, or in PowerDesk.
What might be the problem?
well, i think i remember in windows xp that whenever you had pictures in any folder, and you were in that folder using windows explorer, that you were able to see a thumbnail of the actual picture IN the folder....
but in windows vista, and now in windows 7 (i upgraded a while ago), i'm not able to see the thumbnail of the actual picture itself....all i see inside the pictures folder (or any folder with pics for that matter), is a little thumbnail of a blue mountain...
i have a bunch of pictures, and i dont like having to click on every single one until i find the one i'm looking for....it VERY inconvenient and time consuming.
so, does anyone know how to fix this? make it so i can see thumbnails of the ACTUAL PICTURE, and not of a blue mountain for every single picture?

Hi,
See if switching to Classic theme and then back to the original theme helps. If that does not work, follow these steps:
Press WinKey+R to bring up the Run menu.
Type the following command and hit ENTER:
CMD /C REG QUERY "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics" |CLIP
The output is copied to the clipboard. Paste the data along with your reply.

I'm never the one to ask, but I don't know what happened. I tried looking online but I couldn't find any solutions. It seems like all my icons (including folders) are not showing up in windows explorer, taskbar, or the desktop anymore. This isn't too big a problem, but navigating through my picture library is very complicated without thumbnails.
My PC is pretty heavily customized.
I also cannot open the start menu from the taskbar anymore. I click the startorb and nothing appears.
Screenshots
Also, while I was uploaded the three screenshots to imgur, the icons showed up on the popup to windows explorer.
start off with a SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker and restart when finished.

For PDF format I applied this fix, for mobi this one, but now I need to also extend thumbnail view to djvu and epub ebook formats, and I don't recall how I managed to do it in Windows 7. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks.
(since I have a backup of my previous Windows 7 PC, is there a way to export the corresponding registry keys and import them in my current Windows 8.1 PC?)

Well now, aint that some way to spoil your customers!
Heres what.
I ve got folders with images and I do a lot of sorting and moving around and when I used XP I could see little fancy tumbnail previews of the images inside the folder, ON the folder icon.
Windows 7 does this too but in an inept, I-need-to-be-different-for-differents-sake kinda way.
Now, why the heck would MS want to go changin stuff around that aint needin no changin around I wonder.
Then I wonder if theres somewhere I can change this around to a practical setting but soon realize theres no such setting anywhere.
... hence I ve arrived here.
Is there a hack/tool/whatever around someplace that will let me fix Windows Explorer tomake it useful to me once again?
What's wrong with the way Windows 7 folders display their pictures?
I've actually found that it works pretty well when I have my thumbnails set somewhere between "Large Icons" and "Extra Large Icons":
I got a new computer with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and I find it very annoying that in all the Open File dialog boxes and even Windows Explorer there does not seem to be a selection under the View menu to show thumbnails of image files. Even when I select Contents and highlight the file it still only shows a generic icon. Can anyone please tell me if there is a way to fix this?
Thanks for any help
Hello David, and welcome to Seven Forums.
Double check using the tutorial below to make sure that you have thumbnail previews enabled.Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable
If you do, then double check to make sure that you have Windows Photo Viewer set as the default program with all of it's associations.Default Programs - Set a Program's Default Associations

I found no solution in Windows Explorer's View menu, Options, and Help.
I would suspect it was due to me shutting down some 'process' or 'service' (2 weeks ago), but as far as I can see, all possibly-relevant processes and services are now running.
A related issue was raised by someone else and responded to by me here: Can't Rate Media in Explorer (Vista Home).
Quote:
A few days ago I was able to rate my mp3's and videos in Windows Explorer (0 to 5 star ratings), at the bottom of the window pane. You give it a rating, hit the save button, and there you go! But now I can't anymore.
I'm using:
Vista Home Premium SP1
I usually just read here but I'm stumped (and no tech!) So thanks in advance for any suggestions!
On my USB external drive, when I connect it to either an XP desktop or a W7 laptop, the video files show as thumbs ie: small pictures of the content. Yet when I connect it to the other W7 desktop, I see generic boxes marked "WMV", "AVI", or whatever. I matched the view properties as far as I can see and am using the same MPC player on them. Any thoughts on how to get the thumbnails to appear?
Set the folder view to "Thumbnails".
http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f217/solved-no-thumbnails-showing-703839.htmlThere is a website I used to browse. In this website, there are thumbnails of pic files which I download to my PC. Recently, I've found that all these thumbnails are not showing. In their place, I see a white box with an 'X' across it.
I also encounter this problem at some websites. Can anyone tell me how to resolve this problem? Is there some other 3rd party stuff I need to install with my IE6 / Windows XP?

When I download pictures at times it appears that a shade is over part of the picture. I can correct it by rotating the picture. Here is a sample:
I have tried cleaning the thumbnail cache.
See here: Thumbnail Cache - Clear and Reset
See if that helps.
Like the title says.
I read that the K-Lite codec pack is a solution but if that is so then does anyone know a secure download site for the file. I have had bad experiences with infected codec packs in the past.
Thanks in advance.
I use majorgeeks.com for downloads and have never had any problems, another safe codec pack is Shark007.
http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/50650-mov-thumbnails-not-showing-win-8-1-64bit.htmlAs the title says. It happened all of a sudden.
I've tried going into folder options and unticking and ticking.
I've ran disk clean up
I've ran sfc /scannow
I've installed some codecs
I did find something about editing the registry but when I was following the instructions I couldn't find the specified area mentioned in the article. So I haven't actually change anything in my registry yet.
Thanks,

Is your aero theme turned on?
right click your desktop > personalize > scroll up to aero themes section and select one.
It's possible you don't have your drivers installed, but i'd hope a shop would have the forethought to install your drivers after a format.

I've downloaded a lot of .FLV tutorial files and it would help greatly if I could see the file thumbnails for reference but none are visible.
I've been into Advanced System settings and made sure 'Show thumbnails instead of icons' is checked. I'm playing the vids in WMP and that's working fine but no flv thumbnails.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. (In simple terms if poss)

Hello Sommarblond,
Double check in Default Programs to make sure that Windows Media Player is set as the default program with all of it's associations set to it as well. One or more of the associations may not be set for WMP.
What file extension type is the for?
Hope this helps,
Shawn

There is a registry issue where sometimes the explorer cannot locate the thumbnails
and there for when browsing through the folder some files dont have a thumbnail but
a generic symbol for the type of folder it is, You can fix it by following the next procedure
1) Save the Registry Fix file as Registry.cmd
2) Then run the batch file with elevated administrator privileges.
And you should see an improvement,

I read somewhere that all you have to do to see thumbnails on the desktop is to right click on a clear area of the desktop -> View -> Thumbnails
But I don't have View when I right click on my desktop not even in grayed out, so how do I enable thumbnails on my desktop?
I do have thumbnails everywhere else and when I go to the desktop with Explore I get thumbnails there but not on my actual desktop. I set my folder options to custom view for all folders.
Thanks for helping out,

I'm running Windows 2000, and I want to be able to see JPEG images when I select "Thumbnails" under the View menu. Currently, the only images that display are Windows bit map images (BMP). I know it's possible to see JPEG windows as thumbnails under Windows 2000 because I used to have a different computer that ran 2000 and did display JPEGs. However, I got a new computer that doesn't. I'm assuming there is a way to tell Windows 2000 to display JPEG images in thumbnails, but I can't find any reference to thumbnail views in Windows help or on the Microsoft website.
Any suggestions, please?

I had Windows Vista since last year and everything was fine. Yesterday, my icons/thumbnails on the internet disappeared and show a box with symbols. I can tell what the box says when I scroll over but how do I get the icons back. I restored the firewall to its default setting and the icons came back but now they're gone again. Please help.

Some of the thumbnails aren't showing up windows explorer even though they are the same file type. There will be 12 episodes of a show in .AVI or .MKV, and only 9 will have thumbnails, the other 3 don't. I have the Haali Media Splitter on to show thumbnails and I installed the Windows Service Pack to to it too (not sure which one is actually working, if I had to guess I'd say it's Haali).
To enable the thumbnails on Haali Media Splitter I click it, the went: options → explorer integration → show thumbnails (yes) → thumbnails offset (10000)
Not sure what is wrong...can anyone help?
And this is a problem with pretty much all the file types, some thumbnails showing and some not when they're in the same folder and I got them from the same source (all the files in a folder are either AVI or MKV, but the problem happens with both)
Just within the past week or so, when viewing pics in windows explorer, only some of the thumbnails will show the image they are representing. Some won't. I tried rebuilding the library and doing Disk Cleanup to delete them so they'd rebuild; I've checked/unchecked the "show icons not thumbs" to see if that would kick it into showing it. Nothing has helped.
Also, maybe related, when opening up any Windows explorer window, the green bar at the top is very slow to load all the way to the right, sometimes never getting to the other side.

Unfortunately, I never really explored the full possibilities but maybe yours might work that way as well.

This isn't about the big thumbnail picture but the little icon in the thumbnail which shows the shortcut picture or the norton 360 back up icon on the thumbnail of music files.

http://www.tenforums.com/software-apps/44934-vlc-not-showing-thumbnails-view-video-file.htmlHello. The thumbnails in my music folder don't display correctly for some of my subfolders.
I've Googled this before and I haven't found any useful solutions. It seems most people just clear their thumbnail cache, but that only seems to work on the C: drive. My music folder is on a separate partition.
Anyway, this is the problem .... I have my music folder, and all subfolders, "optimized" for music. In an artist folder, the album folders will usually show the proper album artwork.
However, when I go up a level, the artist folder doesn't show the album thumbnails in it. In this picture, you can see Barenaked Ladies doesn't display properly--- but their neighbor, Band of Horses, displays just fine. It's this inconsistency that really confuses me.
Anyone have any ideas?
I previously had a computer with Vista on it. I purchased a new computer with Windows 7 and installed MS Office 2010. I transferred all my files from my old computer to my new computer and now when I go to insert pictures into my website, the pictures are not showing up as thumbnails so I can view all at the same time. They just show that little icon.
I have went through a lot of the threads in response to this problem and have tried them all without any success. Could it be old settings that transferred over and are not compatible. Thank you to anyone that can help me.

Hi,
few questions:
what Antivirus are you using
how long has it been since the date of install of the OS
do you use any registry cleaner or similar of this sort
start with SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker and restart upon finding violations and post back.
Hey all!!
On my desktop the album covers show up in my music directories when in thumbnail view, but on my laptop they do not.
Any ideas why?
Regards,
Odysseus
Well, after adding all my MP3s to WMP some show up and some don't. These are 90% albums that I ripped myself from my own CDs.
Confusing.
I inadvertantly semi installed a photo editor prog off the Office Premium disk (i have now uninstalled it) this meant all my JPEG files then wanted the Office CD to open the file.
I have since put the file association back to normal (IE) but now the Thumbnails view is not working for JPEGS in the My Picture folder.
Bitmaps work but in the JPEG boxes I just get the JPEG file icon and not the actual thumbnail,
any ideas?
go to view menu and select thumbnails.
Hello I don't know if I should post this problem on Firefox forum because I use FF as my main browser or adobe forum but I'd like to post it here first to get some suggestions Basically starting from few days ago thumbnails won't show for some videos on Japanese video steaming site called Nico Nico Douga Here are some of the examples on Firefox highlighted in red rectangles http i imgur com DH lbOp jpg http i imgur com CTwKEXT jpg Also (NicoNicoDouga: Japanese showing site) Video not thumbnails it won't show on IE as well as you can see from the screenshots below http i imgur com SuFDpmj jpg http i imgur com wrGj jpg However the problem is not permanent as when I refresh the page it shows the thumbnails Though when I refresh the page again other videos will not show the thumbnails and so on So it's very random and it only happens to few random videos as there are no Video thumbnails not showing (NicoNicoDouga: Japanese site) specific pattern for certain videos Video thumbnails not showing (NicoNicoDouga: Japanese site) I know it might be hard to pinpoint the cause of this problem as it's not a well known site like youtube however I suspect the way it works i e video thumbnails using same flash player etc is similar Video thumbnails not showing (NicoNicoDouga: Japanese site) to each other
It displays fine on my FF, so if it is indeed a FF problem, it may come down to one of your addons. Try running FF ins it's safe mode and see if it displays correctly.

Hi hollyw,
Welcome to Vista Forums!
Here's a tutorial on how to do this in a variety of ways. Try them in the order presented as that's from the simplest to the most complex (even though I imagine you tried the first few already). Note the comment (and link to the procedure) near the top to set the default program to Windows Photo Gallery if none of the other options work (which you may or may not want to consider - or perhaps at least try to see if it works - let us know either way - and change it back if you don't want that as the default): Thumbnails in Windows Explorer.
If that doesn't work, try rebuilding the Icon Cache: Icon Cache - Rebuild to see if that helps.
If that doesn't work, you may want to clear the thumbnail cache (it won't delete anything but the cache and will rebuild itself when you open folders though it may take more time the first time you do so as it needs to do this first). Here's how: Thumbnail Cache.
I hope this helps. If not, post back with results of what you tried and we'll try some different options.
Good luck!
Hi everyone. I am having this problem with the My Music folder. I am using Windows XP Professional. Basically, whenever I select to view the folders as thumbnails, the title of the folder does not show up. This happened the other day. I think I hit some kind of key combination wrong or something and it caused it to do that. How do I fix it?

Cannot keep "thumbnails" as default viewing option throughout Windows Explorer programs & functions
Running XP Home, Version 2002, SP2
All my folders are set to thumbnail in windows explorer, but when I go to send a picture on msn or open in another application the pictures are in list view.
This requires an extra step to view the thumbnail, having to go to "view menu" then check thumbnails to preview files before opening/sending.
I have scoured the internet for a solution, to no avail.
Anyone be so kind as to lend any expertise on the issue?
Thank you.
was hoping someone might have some insight, thank you for your time.
Have done a reinstall of Win onto my SSD C drive Decided to continue cleaning my PC by doing a disk clean with Diskpart command on my D drive - carefully following the steps in Brink's Disk - in Explorer Not HDD Windows Showing Clean and Clean All With Diskpart Command tutorial The procedure failed with the error message quot Clean is not allowed on the disk containing the current boot systems pagefile crashdump or hibernation volume quot This is odd since status in the Computer Management Disk Management window shows it as quot Healthy Primary Partition quot without mention of boot pageflie crash dump or hibernation vol Those are shown for the C Drive I will add that I was very conscientious in identifying the correct drive for the Clean I exited the elevated command prompt subsequently checked my computer explorer and found my D drive is no HDD Not Showing in Windows Explorer longer listed The disk is still listed as in Computer Management Disk Management window with two partitions System Reserved MB NTFS Healthy System Active Primary Partition and Volume GB NTFS Healthy Primary Partition The disk also shows up in device manager under Disk Dives as working properly How do I now restore my D drive
The mistake you seem to have done is reinstalling Windows 7 on the SSD with the other drive also connected.
Just disconnect the other drive and try to boot your system. If it does not boot, then definitely the boot files are on the other drive.
Simplest solution I would perform is to reinstall Windows 7 on the SSD after disconnecting the other drive.
Confirm you are able to boot into the system and then groom your Windows 7 on it.
Afterwards you can connect the other drive and format it the way you like.

This is why when you install Acdsee, you do a custom install and DON'T associate Jpeg files with it.
But anyway, open Regedit, and navigate to "HKCR\.jpe\PersistentHandler"
Is the default value "{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"? Check the same for .JPG and .JPEG
Make a backup of whatever values are there, and change them too the value I gave above. Reboot, and see if your thumbnail views are back. If not, then restore the default values for PersistenHandler to whatever value they where, and then uninstall ACDsee to see if that will restore them.
If uninstalling ACDSee worked, then install it again but DON'T associate JPG files with it. I have ACDSe Pro 2 installed, and thumbnails show just fine here.
For sometime now, I have been unable to get thumbnails to work for most video formats. .avi is the only one that shows thumbs. .mov, .mpg, .mpeg, .mpeg4, etc, show only icons. .mov shows QT icon, and the rest show WMP icon. I USED to have thumbs, but not for while.
Yes, Thumbnails is selected under view. And I have already checked the ShellEx registry key under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mpegfile and it is setup correctly. I also ran a script to reset thumbnail views

Hello,
Can anyone out there tell me why when I go to pull up a tech article or some such document that has images as part of the article, the images only show as a box with an "X"? The images tend to support the explanation of the text, but they aren't there. Is there a box within Windows Explorer or something in my Zone Alarm that I have to set in order to get these to show properly?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
Bobby
Here's a routine to run for the infamous "Red X" problem:

In Windows 7 Explorer, the Computer icon is not showing in the left pane--neither in the default view or the 'show all folders' view.
You can see from the screen captures that I have Explorer set to open to Computer, but no Computer in left pane, and no drives are accessible directly through Explorer.
The drives are fine (from using alternate Explorer alternatives).
How can I get the Computer icon back in the left pane?
Make a shortcut to windows explorer and in properties for the shortcut,
place the following in the target line.
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n,/e,C:\
This might or might not be what you want to see.

Hi icehammer, welcome to Eightforums!
As far as I understand your question, you want to be able to see the artwork of your m4a music files when browsing with Windows Explorer.
I myself have most of my music in m4a format and I can see all the albumart in Windows Explorer.
The ONLY thing I did was installing K-Lite Codec Pack. I don't use other codec packs, K-Lite worked for me.
Here is the downloadlink ==> Download K-Lite Codec Pack
Just remember, if you run a x64 Windows you MUST install the x64 codecpack AFTER you install the NORMAL codecpack. If you have other codec packs installed please uninstall them first!
Goodluck trying and hopefully enjoying the albumart in Windows Explorer

Have you looked in the Device Manager to see if there are any problems with the drivers?
Start> right click on My Computer> Manage> Device Manager.
The Universal Serial Bus controllers should be at the bottom of the list.
Everytime I try to open windows explorer in vista, it shows up blank. I think it's after I've tried to right click on a video file in a folder. I read somewhere that it happens when you try to right click something, but found no solutions anywhere.
Basically I went to copy a video file and move it to another folder, but then both folders would stop working. I would try to open up other folders like "Computer" and "Control Panel" but then they pop up blank and all they say is "Windows Explorer"

Welcome to SevenForums Balian,
Can you make a screen shot or use the snipping tool of what it looks like in
Windows Explorer ?

I am running windows XP and for some reason when I look at windows explorer it shows I have a C and D drive, both with the same name and same files. I am afraid to erase the D drive because I don't want to accidentally erase the C drive. I have looked on microsofts site and found nothing. I am running an HP pavilion.
Hi pbman41
to BleepingComputer.
On my Pavilion, the D: drive is the Recovery partition on the main C: drive. This is the area which will restore your computer back to factory condition if everything goes wrong. GUARD IT WITH YOUR LIFE, and do not add or delete anything from it.
If that is not what it is on your PC, it may be a backup created by some program on your machine.
Cheers
I have a problem where the left pane of the windows explorer bar is greyed out and it shows nothing. The right pane however works fine.
I have seen the article in relation to how to fix this problem on a Windows 95 and 98 machine but not a Windows 2000 machine as the registry key mentioned does not exist in Win2k.
Any idea anyone ?
Hi Jeeviz....See if this site is any help http://searchsystemsmanagement.techtarget.com/ateQuestionNResponse/0,289625,sid20_cid461699_tax287574,00.html
I have attached a copy of he dumpfile. Please let me know if you require any other information. The user cannot replicate the issue, it happens at random times and she isnt starting or stopping any programs around the time of the crash.
Welcome to Seven Forums,
Have you gone through these troubleshooting steps?
My explorer large icons doesn't work, but instead just produce blank invisible square as shown on the picture below.
Here's what I tried and didn't help:Assigning the correct PATH variables
Delete the icons cache/reboot
No system restore point
Also the desktop background can't be set.
Thank you in advance!
Hello djvisage,
In addition, reset and clear the thumbnail cache to see if that may help.
Thumbnail Cache - Clear and Reset
Hi,
I recently upgraded to Windows 8 on my Boot Camp partition (i'm aware that Apple hasn't officially released drivers for 8 yet, i'm still running the Windows 7 Boot Camp drivers and so far it seems stable).
I've ran into a little problem in the Explorer. As i'm using an SSD, i have my Windows partition fairly small (~50GB) so i keep all of my photos on my Mac partition and don't duplicate them over.
When trying to browse through these photos on the Windows side, i can see the file name and the icon, and they open perfectly in Windows Picture Viewer, but within Explorer they all show the same default Windows "Mountain by the lake" icon.
I've been into Folder Preferences and told it only to display thumbnails and not the icon but still no luck...
Does anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks for your help
I am going to say that because the pics actually reside on OSX, windows is unable to create a thumnail cache. It does this to speed up the viewing time, however your windows really doesn't "own" the pics folder on OSX and may not be able to build this cache properly and therefore you would not have any thumnails. here is an excert from the mighty Wikipedia about it:
"Beginning with Windows Vista, thumbnail previews are stored in a centralized location on the system. This provides the system with access to images independent of their location, and addresses issues with the locality of Thumbs.db files. The cache is stored at %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer as a number of files with the label thumbcache_xxx.db (numbered by size); as well as an index used to find thumbnails in each sized database.
However, when browsing network shares with write permission, Windows Vista and Windows 7 store a Thumbs.db file in the remote directory instead of using the (local) central thumbnail cache. This can cause issues when deleting remote shares, as the directory will become locked for a period of time when selected as Windows Explorer automatically creates a remote Thumbs.db file.
Creating Thumbs.db files on remote shares can be disabled with a Group Policy setting"
Hope that makes some sense, it would seem that is the problem to me any way.
Geeve
Edit: you could just grab a couple of pics and move them over to the windows side and see if it gives you your preview, that would at least test the cache theory anyway.
Hi
in explorer i set thumbnails very big/large
is there a tweak to make them bigger?
thanks
cheers
Hello Drugo,
Sorry, but the icons view will only go up to Extra Large Icons. However, you could turn on the Preview Pane, and adjust it's border and the window's border to change the size of supported images in the preview pane like below.
Hope this helps some,
Shawn
recently I have noticed that explorer does not show thumbnails for either my mpg or mpeg files. it works fine for avi however. I checked the shellex registry keys for both file types and they are the same as on my laptop which does not have the problem.
any ideas?
https://forums.techguy.org/threads/no-thumbnails-for-mpg-mpeg-in-explorer.543851/
I have read similar problems on this forum, but, unfortunately, did not solve mine.
After installing a software (I'm not sure which, it could be VLC or ffdshow codecs or videopad), video thumbnails in Windows Explorer would not show a frame from the video, just the icons. I then downloaded a .reg file which restored the video thumbnails, but now it only shows the first frame of the video, which is usually blank. So now all my videos show a blank black picture, which was not so earlier. Before the problem started, it would pick up a random frame from the video...
Could anyone help out, please?

Icon Cache - Rebuild
Hi, when browsing a directory of images I'm not able to see thumbnails. I cannot remember installing any program around the time this occurred to screw up my associations.
Can you help me fix this? (Specs are in my profile)
Go to Start > Search > type Disk Cleanup > click on the the disk cleanup app, check Thumbnails then click OK.
This will clean, and rebuild your thumbnail cache.
Hey guys,
Did a quick search and only found posts about windows re-doing thumbnails, not when they are gone altogether!
Any ideas? As far as I can remember this happened totally randomly!
Max
UPDATE: I've just realised that this is ALL files, not just images and it doesnt matter if they are on the desktop / pendrive / google drive etc..
Hello darksupernova,
Double check using the tutorial below to make sure that you have thumbnail previews enabled.

I got a problem with my baracuda HDD.
It's a 500GB HDD and I divided it in 2 partition.
1st partition shows up, but the second one is not.
The 2nd partition is already a formated partition ( Primary ) and it's healthy.
The problem is It doesn't show and I can't access my data on it. It has no letter, and it's active.
Please help me out guys. This problem persists after I reinstalled my windows on new system HDD
Hi,
Did you create the partition using a Linux operating system? If you did, then that's why it's not showing up.
To get it to show, go into your Disk Management (Start>Search "Disk Management">Create and format disk partitions), and delete the partition. Then, create it again and format it. It should now show up. Reply if you have any concerns or problems.
