Preferred Solution: Messing around in BIOS... to no avail

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You have an unlocked multiplier, are you pushing the front side bus up or are you changing the multiplier to something higher than default?

I have onboard video in my system. I just purchased a PCI Express card with 512 MB and installed it to get ready for Win7. I did not do anything to disable the onboard video as I figured that would be done automatically. I just ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor again and it still says my card does not meet Win7 specifications. I was thinking that I might need to disable the onboard in the Bios. The only thing I see in there is under "PCI/PnP Setup". Under "Init Display First" there are two options. A "PCI" and a "PCI Express". It is set on PCI. Since my card is in the PCI Express slot, would this be the option I would need to change to make my system recognize the video card under the Win7 Upgrade Advisor? If I am completely off base with this, please straighten me out.

A:Help Needed Messing Up Bios

The location of the control varies from bios to bios.

On my PC it is under Advanced and then "Video Configuration".

I would keep digging and look from something more clearly named, but it's possible you have it. No problem in trying it, because you can always get back in the bios and change it back.

I tried to remove this virus and i cannot so i turn to help here. It takes up the middle of the screen and won't let you do anything like click on popups to install anything because they go to the middle of the screen.
It is a HP PC with windows 8.1. I have used Spybot , Malewarebytes , ADWcleaner. They all find something and i have them remove it but the popup still happens as soon as the computer loads in from startup. doesnt seem to affect the computer except that pop up stays there and is over everything you pull up IE web browser and computer browser. Also it doesnt allow you to use CTR ALT DLT. it says soemthing about administrator blocked but this is the only and admin account.

I checked the advanced settings too and this options isn't available. Any idea how I might be able to fix this. Right now I'm running at 1024x768 but would really like to run in the wide screen mode.

I bought a ideapad 305, Windows 10, in the box is says it's equiped with 16GB of RAM, the BIOS reports 16GB installed, Windows System says it has 16GB but only 7GB are usable, SYSTEMINFO reports 7GB of total phyisical memory. The task manager reports 16.0GB but the gauge shows 7.0GB as the upper limit. I already made sure "Maximum memory" under MSCONFIG->Boot->Advanced Options is unchequed. If I force the system to use more than 7GB of RAM the computer screen becomes black and it seem like the hard disk starts working steadly... for several minutes. If you can post screen captures of all the relevent screens, that would help.

And download and burn a CD with MemTest86 (the free version, turn UEFI boot on in the BIOS to run v6 and not v4), run 2 passes.   You can then be confident that your memory hardware is good afterwards.    From a setup screen option, make note of what DIMMs it has, and how much memory it sees.

Hey - I have been trying to upgrade my RAM to 16GB, rather than the stock 6GB, and it's not working.

I'm running an Intel Core i5 5200U 2.20GHz CPU, currently with 6GB (4+2) DDR3 RAM @ 798MHz (11-11-11-28). My OS is 8.1.

I bought a 16GB RAM set (8+8) which is DDR3 (11-11-11-28) and is compatible with 1066, 1333, and 1600MHz. I have tried several different setups and arrangements of the cards, but my computer is just not recognising either of the new cards. I've heard you need to change the BIOS to accommodate a RAM upgrade - and I tried that, but my BIOS isn't changeable. I can see it, but I can't change the RAM settings.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Does anyone have any advice?

I am running
Windows 7 Ulimited X64

I have had the computer for about five years now. I upgraded to windows 7 about 10 months ago. The computer worked fine. Then recently I start having BSOD, The two problems I kept seeing was ntkrnlpa.exe and nvlddmkm.sys. So today I install a fresh copy of Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I updated my video driver and that seem to fix it for about 8 hours. Now I am having a problem with ntkrnlmp.exe. Not sure what else to do. I am attaching the dump file and a health report.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Would you folks recommend HP for a Desktop, or is there a consensus now for a better quality Desktop ?

Sometime ago I did I was searching for duplicate files on 2TB HDD. This went on for some time and along the way windows asked me to run CHKDSK on it. I ignored it a few times until I finally let it run and it managed to find some problems and proceeded with necessary fixes. Now computer shows it as 1.7TB free where as before it was quite the opposite at about 300MB free. Now I am able to gain access to the folders but unless I get permission to do so. Windows asks to empty the recycle bin for the HDD because it is corrupt but I never proceed with that because I am afraid it may delete all of the files in the HDD. What should I do? Is there an app for this situation? HDD is a ST320006 41AS.

- Compaq Presario
- 56k modem

What is happening is the driver shows it is loaded but when you do a diagnostics test with the more information button or when you try and connect to the internet it gives you a message like Com Port not available.
I looked at what port it is on and it is Port-1 which is also the printer port I noticed....
Do I need to change the port? if so How?

Thanks....

A:Com Port not avail message....

The printer should be on LPT1 not com1, if this is older PC your mouse may be interferring (be on the same com as the modem)

To change the modem port... go into control panel---> modems. In there there should be an option to change the com port the modem resides on. Try a different one.

If this is an old modem, you may have to change the jumper settings on the modem itself... lets hope its not that old.

If you having trouble, post back the Operating system.

Good luck,
G

Yesterday I had no problem going to MSN via IE 11. Today nothing works. Everytime I go MSN and log in, a blue ribbion covers the top of the MSN page telling me to "Let's Start Windows 10" which I try to go around & go to Outlook. Bam, get a message that MSN has lost connection and needs to recover the page.

I am running the following hardware:

Anyone have a suggestion as to what's causing this to happen? I can use GMail with no problem. It's just trying to use MSN. Is this a result of all of the "Windows 10" hype?

Thanks!

So a while back I had a really bad crash on boot there were a bunch of errors popping up on occasion nothing that prevented the computer from operating MOST of the time under MOST circumstances Just random things now and again usually dealing with dll files and other system files For instance OSK exe on screen keyboard will no longer pop up on boot and will not function I was an idiot and do not have an uncorrupted backup I have been working on this computer for a very long time so the amount of time to install a clean OS and reinstall all of those random little programs Frighteningly large I would like to avoid that at all costs so what can I do I have Win ultimate no SFC Ran crash! avail. times to Bad 30 Help! about x I Bad crash! Ran SFC about 30 times to no avail. Help! ran the SFC program as per reccomendation from another forum user however after no shit around scans Bad crash! Ran SFC about 30 times to no avail. Help! it continued to quot find quot errors to fix that required reboot as well as ones that it identified as unrepairable I saved the log that it created but its thousands of lines long and too large a txt file to upload here unless I zip it What are my options I'm at wits end Thanks to all in advance

Did you first disinfect? Run a full scan with Malwarebytes | Free Anti-Malware & Internet Security Software in Safe Mode if necessary, followed by SUPERAntiSpyware - Downloads, declining their trial version when installing to use them only as free scanners.

Then try SFC again to see if it gains any traction.

Other steps to go over your install thoroughly are in Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 including if necessary a Repair Install.

A:Vista-XP Routing no AVAIL

First off, you need a router to allow independent connections. That DSL modem might be a router, what is the exact make/model of the unit. If it's a DSL modem only, then a separate broadband router is the ticket here.

Hello I have a major problem a couple of no to Trying restore desktop Avail!! my pc to months ago Trying to restore my desktop pc to no Avail!! I ordered restore discs for my gatewat fx desktop pc recieved my discs and restored my pc and it worked fine for a short while until it just stopped working again I tried using my restore discs but they didnt do the job it wouldnt restore I realized after some testing of certain things in my pc that my hard drive was no good I went and bought a new hard drive installed it and reused the restore discs they went thru the whole process and restored my pc supposedly and then it told me to restart my pc when I did I get a message that says quot windows could not complete the installation To install windows on this computer restart the application quot no matter how many times i try to restore it I just keep getting the same message Is it possible I need to buy a windows or Vista in the store maybe the restore discs didnt come with vista I just dont know if any one can help me I would greatly appreciate it

A:Trying to restore my desktop pc to no Avail!!

Try Gateway support. If they charge to call on the phone, try the web site. It should have a support section. Tell them you had to replace the drive. Chances are the restore discs are hard-wired to only go on the HD that came standard with the machine.

If it seems like it's going to take a while, if you can access broadband, you can download a Windows install DVD and install it with no product key. It will let you evaluate it for some period of time with everything enabled. You have nothing to lose since if you get the restore CDs to work they will wipe everything anyway.

You might as well play with Windows7 while you're waiting.

It does require extra effort. The uninstall information (what to run to properly uninstall) and control of those buttons is in the registry in an uninstall section. All buttons can be added, removed, just one, display both, etc. but we are not allowed to go there in this forum. For example, IE7 shows up in Add/Remove Programs but has no uninstall button. This is easily explained and on purpose and you could make an uninstall button appear if you know how, but it is missing on purpose and that example is uninstalled (usually) a different way.During your troubleshooting, do you recall uninstalling any Yahoo! things - like Yahoo! Browser Service, etc. It has been reported that can sometimes leave the programs in the list for display, but remove the buttons. It is not that the buttons themselves have been "removed", they are just made not to show up anymore.Ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) has a Tools section has it's own uninstall button for programs it finds but if you use it, it will just try to run the same uninstall information contained in the registry without you having to go through the XP Add/Remove programs. A popular "solution" that will uninstall (maybe) but does nothing to fix the real problem which is missing buttons.Another solution is to reinstall the program, but if the program still works (do yours), why reinstall it? Instead, fix the missing button problem.First, run the malware scans.Next, answer about a possible removal of anything Yahoo! related connection.Identify a program or two that you see in Add/Remove programs that you think should have buttons, but does not (IE does not count). Then we can focus on one thing at a time. Finally, after you install MBAM and SAS, they should both have Remove buttons - see if these newly installed programs have Remove buttons and only your other programs do not. I will bet you are running "homegroup" for networking. Homegroup uses IPv6 and is designed for win 7 only networks. Homegroup has various issues especially on older hardware. You can test to see if that is the problem by creating a new network connection using "workgroup" instead. Today my wireless adapter stopped working and there is an error when trying to print. It just never ends........... Thanks If the hard drive is damaged, there's nothing system restore can do. Also You should have got a system restore disk allowing you to restore your system back to "store bought status." If you didn't get one, it "might" have been on a hidden partition on your hard drive. Since "you" partitioned your hard drive, you may have inadvently deleted the partiton containing the restore image. Therefore... I would highly suggest you talk to the manufacture of the laptop/PC about your problem, and have them replace the hard drive, if that's the problem, or get some advice from them as to your best course of action to your problem. I went down your list and tried a few of your techniques required to post a topic regarding a slow computer, still I'm having no luck, recently it started randomly crashing.

I was wondering if there was any further help I could request, perhaps a stronger program might be helpful, but as advised I didn't want to run anything I might cause further damage with.

I've used this forum once before in the past with optimum results so I thought I'd come back.

Also, after this problem is fixed, I was wondering if anyone knows of a decent free antivirus that will actually do it's job. If not I'm considering just buying one. If so, which one would you recommend to buy?

Thank you so much

~Sarah

active x wont load MS update
When I try to get an update from Microsoft it tells me the following:

Install the ActiveX control required to view the website
The website will not display correctly on your computer without this control. To install it:
1. Right-click the Internet Explorer Information Bar. It's located just below the address bar.
2. In the right-click menu, click Install ActiveX Control.
3. In the Security Warning dialog box, click Install.

Note: If the Information Bar doesn't appear, or if you've installed the control but still can't use the website, take these steps to solve the problem.

I have no"bar" to clik below the explorer bar. I have seen it pop up before but it doesn't with this website. This is keeping me from getting updates. Any suggestions???

I have a trojan that Stinger calls "FakeAlert!PCVirusless" lurking in C:\Windows\System32\atl71.dll.I cannot even find that said file, only one close in name, atl.dll.I have attempted to delete this virus with McCaffee (worthless program), Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Stinger, and even tried the assistance of RKill. RKill can't even locate the damn thing, McCaffee tells me it's there but won't tell me where and can't remove it, and Stinger tells me what it is and where it found it, but it can't remove it and the exact file name it gives me cannot be found. I have tried to do many of the things this forum has suggested except for the HiJackThis program. That program, which I have downloaded, is completely foreign to me.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:I have a trojan virus. I have attempted to use these forums, but to no avail.

Well, I'm running McAfee's Stinger right now, and it's just found (it says) the fakealert!pcvirusless Trojan in file C:\Windows\System32\atl71.dll - and deleted the file. I wanted to know what this Trojan was, so I Googled for it - and found this thread. My main concern was that this might have been a false positive, but now I'm thinking maybe there really was something there. I've had no symptoms of any malware infection, so I would never have known I had this Trojan were it not for the Stinger.

It seems to work (for me anyway), so if you haven't tried it you might want to give it a go. It's free, at least.

One thing : I still don't know what this (alleged) Trojan does. Anyone know?

A:My Issue, tried antispyware and antivirus programs to no avail...

Hi and welcome to TSF.

My name is Iain and I will be helping you clean your system.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers or live internet connections when you are following the procedures below.

Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your logs are clean. Remember that although your symptoms may vanish, this does NOT mean that your system is clean.

If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes.

Please ensure that you follow the instructions in the order I have them listed.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

Referring to the images below

When saving the file, you must rename the file as Combo-Fix.exe

1. Close any open browsers and physically disconnect from the Internet.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
See here for a guide to disabling AV, Firewall and Anti-malware programmes.

NOTE: ComboFix will disconnect your system from the Internet - do not attempt to re-connect until it has finshed scanning.
Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the log C:\ComboFix.txt along with a fresh HijackThis Log for further review.

Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. This may cause it to stall.

** If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then manually restart your computer to restore the connection. **

A:Expensive ASUS BSOD, even upgraded OS to no avail

Hello! Excuse my age on the forums, but I know a decent bit about this stuff. Both Dump files point to wdf0100.sys, but with no STOP code as the dump did not complete properly it appears. wdf0100.sys points to 'hardware problems' or more specifically, computer mice. However, it can sometimes (rarely I would say) be caused by kernel corruption. If it is the mouse/touch pad (as your computer is a Laptop), go into device manager and try to update all drivers for the mouse or uninstall them all, reboot, and they will re install on their own. Based on the fact that the crash occurred around 24 minutes in (for the first dump), you should be able to do this. In some BIOS'es (for me it is F2 for setup), there is an option to disable it, and in windows, there is always an option to do so. Hope this helps!

Hi. I have 2 Hds in my pc, my prim master is a 40g WD that I had my win98SE on and my 2nd HD is a 30g Maxtor that is partitioned into my d: & e: drives. Last week I installed WinXP on my e: and was quite happy w/ my dual o/s boot option.

Last night, I reformatted my c: and did a clean install of win98se and now I no longer have the dual o/s boot option. The system just straight boots into win98se.

My e: is also not recognized by win98se.

Thanks..

Alright, so, recently I've posted about my front USB ports and with further examination, multimedia card reader, crapping out on me.

If the picture link works correctly, here is a screen-shot of what the device manager is showing...

And then here is what it says once I click on Multimedia Card Reader:

It was mentioned to me recently that the components inside the actual tower itself, may have simply burnt out and need to be replaced.

However, if at all possible, do you think it could simply be fixed without going in for repair?

A:USB/multimedia Card Reader etc. still on fritz, new information avail.

I just moved and am trying have installed D-Link AirPlus G Wireless PCI adapter DWL-G510 into an e-machine W2260 AMD Athlon XP 2200+ 1.79 Ghz 992 MB ram desktop. I followed directions for installation and the computer recognizes the new hardware but the hardware does not see any available networks. I am writing this from a laptop in the same room as the computer in question. The laptop is connected to the internet via my homes wireless which lets me know that there is not a problem with my connection. I have tried having the computer in question look for available networks but it still doesn't see any. The power light is visible on the adapter and it keeps switching between the power and data lights on the adapter. Any ideas?

A:[SOLVED] Wireless adapter doesn't see avail. networks

Go to the Device Manager under Network Adapters and make sure there are no yellow marks for the wireless adapter. If so, then you need to install the driver from the CD or there web site. If the driver is working then try uninstalling it and reinstall. Also, try downloading a newer driver from there web site.

Samsung confirmed there is no driver for the Samsung SyncMaster 216BW monitor with Windows 7. There has to be a work around, and perhaps someone on this thread can tell me how to do it. I'm not a techie and geek speak will be hard for me to follow.

My machine worked just fine with the monitor when it was XP, then Vista.

ISSUE: I've recently installed Win7 and the VGA(Graphics) (Driver) (ver.1.0) from Samsung's driver downloads. When I plug in the monitor, my machine no longer acknowledges an external monitor.

Anyone out there willing to walk me through manipulating the XP/Vista driver so I can use my beautiful monitor with this Win7 machine?

Many thanks!
JeannaCa

A:Samsung 216BW monitor driver not avail for Win7?

They only made a Vista driver, but you can install it in compatibility mode.

Samsung

Download the exe file to your desktop. Right click on the exe and choose troubleshoot compatibility. When the choices come up, try the Try Recommended Settings. See if it doesn't do the trick. If not post back and we'll try something else. A Guy

Server:
NTServer 4.0 SP6a 128 bit
Exchange Server 5.5 SP3

Clients:
Various Win95/98 using Outlook 98/2000.

Problem:
We are able to connect to our Exchange server without any problems. However, once we lose our internet connection, the Exchange server becomes "not available" when we try to start up Outlook. I've changed the Exchange server name to the IP address rather than the name, but still no luck. All clients are running TCP/IP and IPX/SPX (no NetBIOS over IPX), and the server is just running TCP/IP. All clients have TCP/IP set as the default protocol.

Can anyone help out?

A:{Advice Offered} - Exchange Server 5.5 SP3 not avail when net connection lost

Greetings

It sounds like you are having a name resolution problem when the internet connection goes down. Do you have a local DNS server? And, do you have a local WINS server? You may need to configure these to make sure internal communication is still occuring when the internet connection goes down. The way to test this: When the internet goes down, ping on the name of your Exchange server. If the ping takes forever to get started, it is a name resolution problem. To prove it conclusively, is to then ping the IP address for the server. If the ping starts straight away, you know it is a name resolution problem. (BTW, I think if you add the server's IP address in the clients mail profile it will automatically put in the server's name... D'Oh!)
First problem you need to solve is "Why do we lose Internet Connection?" If you are supposed to have a constant connection, then it needs to be constant. You may want to look into an alternative form of connection.

Next, you need to solve the problem of "What do we do if the internet connection fails?" For this, I suggest making sure that a WINS server is setup locally, and that the DHCP server is configured to send the IP address for this WINS server when it sends an IP address.

If the webmail component is not installed, you can install it on a seperate IIS server (from the Exchange installation program, just Select Web Mail Component... it will then ask where the Exchange server is, and you can give the IP address; Dont forget to also install SP3).

Hope that helps

Hi,

Shame we are to meet under these circumstances...

I downloaded a flac to mp3 converter for a friend and it appears to have put a virus on my computer. After instalation I received false virus warnings of a system restore virus. I tried to follow removal proceedures found on here but after running malwarebytes, a couple hours into it it just freezes and a (not responding) comes across the top bar of the program window.

Stressed beyond belief and am not sure where to turn to. .. ...

If you may be able to point me in the right direction it would be a lifesaver!

Kind Regards,

Jon

A:Tried to remove system restore virus but to no avail - mbam freezes

Just a couple other points to add..

I don't have firefox remember my bank and Paypal passwords for me, they are typed in each time.
My main concern are all the graphic files on my computer that are for my work. Mostly all are Adobe Illustrator, so maybe to save a lot of grief and as long as it is safe to do so??, just copy off all my work files and then wipe/fresh install the computer?

Or could any malicious files be 'piggybacking' on some of these files or hidden from view in the folders??

Kind Regards,

Jon

The institution has an arrangement with MS to download one copy of Windows Professional to each student. The school IT folks tell me I have to go into the boot menu (f2) and boot from the DVD containing the school's licensed Windows Professional copy. There is no "product key" that I can find, unless it is somewhere on the DVD embedded in another file. Can someone provide clear, concise and simple instructions to an old pilot to get this thing downloaded?

A:Installing institution-avail Windows Professional over Home Premium

Lemme try.

A computer can boot from a variety of devices such as the hard disk or a dvd or a usb drive. But what it looks for FIRST to boot from can be defined in the bios. Now, when you press F2 at boot, you'll get into the bios main screen. Here, when you click on the Boot tab, you'll see a list saying 1st boot device, 2nd boot device and so on. The device that you define here as the 1st boot device is what your computer will boot from by default.

So what your institution is saying is that it wants you to boot from dvd. You can do this by moving the optical drive (dvd drive) upwards in that screen till it becomes the first boot device (normally by highlighting it then pressing +).

As for the product key, the institutional pro edition will likely be KMS activated. This means when you first go online, your computer will connect to the institution network and validate with its server.

But there are other aspects here. Installing pro with that disk will likely wipe all your data, so make sure any critical data is backed up before you start. You must also be prepared to reinstall all drivers and apps.
