Microsoft's new Atom-powered Surface 3 starts at $499

Q: Microsoft's new Atom-powered Surface 3 starts at $499

Much of the lure surrounding Microsoft's long-rumored Surface Mini was the notion that it'd come in at a lower price point compared to its full-sized brother. That project was ultimately scrapped and instead, we got the Surface Pro 3 -...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This was sounding so promising then I got to 2GB RAM....

Have a look at your PC now - if you are running next to nothing over standard windows services, then you are probably somewhere around 1.2GB. Add an email client, some virus software a few Chrome Tabs and you will already be swapping away to page file as the OS starts to worry about memory and things will start to grind. How much would 2 more MB cost? Shame as otherwise it sounds quite a capable little machine.

Hi ,which of the following two devices you would recommend
- Surface pro 4 Core M3-6Y30 HDD 128GB RAM 4GB or
- Surface 3 Atom x7-Z8700 HDD 128GB RAM 4GB
I have Surface Pro first edition with Intel Core i5, but would like more light and thin tablet with long lasting battery. I do not game nor draw, thus consider that the power of the above two would be just fine for using MS office, Inet browsing and HD videos (incl. MKV files).
What do you think?

A:Surface pro 4 Core M3-6Y30 or Surface 3 Atom x7-Z8700 ?

The Surface pro 4 is in fact the better device. The only possible argument is that some people might want the ability to add LTE connectivity, prefer the smaller screen and or smaller price of the Surface 3.
SP4 Pros
-------
The Core M processor is going to be better than an Atom Processor
Larger (higher resolution) Screen and Smaller bezel
Better keyboard that has space between keys and larger (glass) trackpad
Windows Hello Iris Scanner
Gorilla Glass 4
8 megapixel rear shooter and 5 megapixel front shooter
----------
But if you do not care about the above advantages and or prefer LTE capability, a smaller display, and a smaller price then by all means the Surface 3 is probably for you

Hello,

My cool game (freeware!) that uses OpenGL for 3D has problems with Windows 7. It runs perfectly on my GMA 950 but runs slowly on a netbook with GMA 500 and Intel ATOM processor.

I know that there was drivers problems. Do you know if they are solved or if there is a way to get rid with them? Or if demanding features like fullscreen antialiasing are enabled by default?

I can't try to find solutions by myself because I don't own this netbook, it is a player who posted on my forum. If you want to test it to try helping, the game is here: http://www.in-poculis.com and I have attached a screenshot.

Thanks in advance.

Trying to figure out if The HP Envy x360 is compatible with the Microsoft Surface Pens via Bluetooth connection. When looking to the bottom right corner of my screen after a recent update there is a Pen Icon and after clicking this and then clicking a link that said something along the lines of "Don't have a stylus? You can get one here!" I was brought to a Microsoft store page with the Surface Pen on it and am trying to figure out if this would actually be compatible the computer I have. Thanks

I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 256GB that experienced a BSOD this morning. It has a clean install of Windows 10, and has been running for a few months without issue. It was stuck at the Surface logo screen with no circling dots, so I had to do the volume and power button procedure to get it to reboot. I have attached the zip file.

Hi Chrisfl94,

Welcome to the 10forums

The crash was caused by a Symantec heuristics driver, though unless you get another crash soon you have nothing to worry Windows handles single BSOD's by itself.

Hi There,

I currently have a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 connected to one of these docks:
When connected to a dual screen setup the screen flickers bad and it is very annoying to work with.

Once I unplug the dock and plug one monitor straight into the surface itself the screen never flickers.

I have provided a video of the issue below:

Hi, I'm in the market to buy a Microsoft Surface and I noticed it says its running on Windows 8.1 RT. I was wondering if this was just a fancy name for the tablet version of Windows 8.1 on desktops/laptops or is it really that different?

I've searched around for info on the net but there seem to be mixed feelings about it, especially with it running Windows 8.1 RT. Can anyone tell me if its worth getting one? For the record, I have another tablet, a Samsung Galaxy Tab, which I use for personal stuff. The reason why I want to get a Microsoft Surface was because I noticed that it has MS Office on it, which I need for work. I don't like lugging around a laptop when I move from place to place, so the Microsoft Surface made sense to me since it would be easy to carry.

Any thoughts or suggestions? It would be much appreciated. Thanks!

A:Need info about Windows 8.1 RT (and Microsoft Surface)

Hello Teitoku, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Basically RT doesn't allow you to install desktop type programs. Instead, you will only be able to install modern Store apps.

If you wanted a full Windows 8.1, then you would want to get a Surface Pro model instead.

Here's a comparison chart of features between them to help.

A:Microsoft Surface Book - who said Laptop was dead

I just bought one for a coworker. He wanted the Surface Pro 4, but wanted to keep using his computer on the train rides home. My only real complaint about it is the cost. It works upright like a regular laptop, but still has the same tablet capabilities. I used to have a Surface Pro 3 before switching jobs and I really liked that, especially since I used it with a dock. The keyboard flexed a lot, so it is nice to see the Surface Book having a sturdier keyboard. So far so good.

A problem occurred while creating the recovery drive"

Hallo, Microsoft? WTF is this supposed to mean? Why can't I create me such a safety net on a brand new plain vanilla SP4? I haven't done or installed anything, yet, that could possible interfere with that process. So why is this not working as one would expect?

And why is there not the slightest hint WHY this is not working or what kind of error occurred here and what one could possibly do to fix this?

One of the steps to fix the quot Can't create recovery medium quot is to check for system file corruption Just out of curiosity I ran an SFC SCANNOW and it reported quot Windows corrupted 4 Surface ||-( - SFC files Microsoft Brand new Pro claims Resource Protection found corrupted files but was unable to fix some of them quot If SFC doesn't run through without an error on a brand new system when then This so ridiculous The only Brand new Microsoft Surface Pro 4 - SFC claims corrupted files ||-( thing that ever ran on that system was a windows update right after doing the initial setup But I doubt that there is really anything foul on the system since I have that exact same report on about other systems as well some old some new SFC ALWAYS finds some quot corrupted files quot that it is unable to fix and so I know by now that this entire mechanism is just a PoS and a waste of time MS - get your act together You constantly introduce mechanisms into Windows that might be originally well-intended but don't work Why don't you at least removed those once you know they are useless And even worse why is this SFC SCANNOW part of almost every advice one can find in the knowledge base if that mechanism is since years well known to not help or fix anything

Scenario:
* Surface Pro tablets used in a financial institution will be decommissioned and raffled off to employees
* Secure wiping is required while retaining the OS

Route A:
* Do full reset via OS, then use CCleaner to wipe free space, and perform another full reset

Route B:
* Utilize Microsoft Surface Data Eraser Utility

Question on Route B:
* Does this utility automatically reload the OS as well? I can't find any information about this. It's recommended to use if you are selling the tablet. OK, so you run it, but what about the OS? How can you sell it if there's no OS?

Route B is good *enough*. Microsoft claims that it is a good way to decommission old devices. Personally, I would still use Blancco 5 or something similar and reinstall Windows 10. Surface Tools SHOULD remove everything except for the OS and do it in a way where the data is no longer recoverable.

By the way, its good to see you're still around. Sounds like things are working out well.

Sure, Google Chrome Frame increases the Microsoft IE attack surface?

? but there?s more to the issue than what?s currently being bickered about.
Google?s Chrome Frame plugin for Internet Explorer is meant to incorporate web 2.0 functionality that the IE browser currently does not support. As reported in [1] Microsoft fired back claiming that Google?s plugin will double the threat landscape for Internet Explorer users and that they would not recommend this plugin to their relatives. While Microsoft?s statement has some theoretical truth to it ? in the superficial conjecture that more code means more vulnerabilities ? it naively discounts the beneficial security features the plugin can add to the system.

I just recieved my new dell inspiron 13 5000 which is a 2in1 and I haven't used it much until today at school. I received it last Monday. When I have to almost closed 45 degree angle the bottom right hand corner does not wobble but when I open it more than that or 90 degrees normal typing angle the bottom right corner of the laptop lifts up above the table and it wobbles when I type unless I hold it down. I would like to know if this is faulty or supposed to be like this becuase it's really annoying. Could I get an exchange for non faulty one?

You can return a system for replacement for any reason within 21 days of the date of shipment.  It sounds like the chassis is not in tolerance.

Hi,

I've a little problem, when I start Word 2003, it takes around 20 seconds and then I can use it.
Some times there is even a force close. (then the word 2003 freezes)

And if I type: winword /a in Start it starts up directly.
So now my default program for .doc files = winword. (which is slow)
I can't change it to /a.
(/a is add-ins??? so winword /a = word without add-ins?)
Can i disable those add-ins?

My Pc specs = the 2nd in my computer specification
vista home premium x64
4gb ram
640gb harddisk

Thanks in advance

After searching through google and the forums for a solution, I thought i'd come here and ask. First off, is Microsoft Office 2007 compatible with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002? I know it is for regular XP but for whatever reason, Microsoft made that horrible version. Anyways, I go to install it, enter my key, click install and it goes to the install screen. The bar doesn't fill at all. After a few seconds.. i hear the HDD click a bit and then it says it encountered an error during setup. I've tried many google suggestions. No other version of office installed. Tried installing to a different folder, and even to a different HDD. Any suggestions? Like I said, it doesn't even start the installation...

I've tried installing XP Pro SP3 on to an ATOM Tablet, after the files have been copied to the hard drive and the unit reboots, I get the message "Missing or Corrupt hal.dll". Is this due to XP not discovering the hardware correctly?

I'm only downgrading due to the graphics chip struggling under Windows 7 Home Premium. It's an Intel GMA 500 so should work better than I've seen under Win 7.

IT should run a 64 bit OS. If it will run it well is another thing though, you'd have to try it.
Download this tool to see if it's 64 bit enabled, some PC makers disable it.

I'm a bit torn between the two as I have decided to upgrade my Surface Pro 3. Price is not an issue, so im just looking at specs. Surface Pro 4 Core i7 256 GB HD 16 GB RAM Surface Book Core i7 256 GB HD 8 GB RAM I loved my SP3 and getting a Pro 4 with double the RAM and faster processor sounds like a no brainer. But looking at the Book and getting the NVIDIA GPU sounds pretty awesome even if it's only 8 GB of RAM. I loved the portability of the SP3 and I feel the Book although it is portable won't be the same with the added keyboard it brings. Then again the Book keyboard would be better than the Touch keyboard I have now. Any opinions/suggestions would be helpful (:

A:Surface Pro 4 or Surface Book

Laptop that can double as a tablet or a tablet that can double as a laptop? You're probably going to keep the Book in laptop mode most of the time.
Also, I think, assuming you don't do crazy memory-intensive things, that adding discrete graphics is much more useful than extra RAM. I got myself a ThinkPad with a Core i7 (Pro 3 generation), 8 GB/256 GB and the only things I really think would be nice is more hard drive space and better graphics.

Why would you want Windows 7 on it? the biggest issue will be the 8GB of hard drive space available. You don't want a solid state drive running near full capacity for performance reasons and Win7 is going to pretty much fill that thing up on install.

hey guys i m actually confused coz intel atom (1.7ghz) is supposed to be same in termss of speed but how can intel i7 1.7ghz be different with intel atom .....plz help

A:What is the difference between atom 1.7ghz and i7 1.7 ghz

the speed of cpus in terms of ghz is almost irrelevant these days.

its all about architecture. a core i7 is probably 1000x faster in terms of speed compared to an atom. arom processors arw low powered portable cpus. i7 is top of the range all out speedy speed.

a 3.2ghz core i5 for example is still much faster than an AMD equivalent at say 4ghz.

a formula 1 car has a 1 .6lt engine, it would be a darn sight faster than any run of the mill 2.5lt+ car!!

Hi, everyone-
We had an Asus EEE, until a toddler spilled a drink on it, killing the keyboard and mainboard. Asus decalred repair cost to be about what I paid, so I said, just send it back to me so I can scavange.

Are there good websites for info on building an Atom-based computer? Newegg does not seem to have a lot of MBs. Who does?

What else can I scavange off this dead EEE? Thx.

The following was copied pasted from https forum palemoon org viewtopic php t amp p p We currently have a specialized Atom-optimized build to serve both Windows discontinue to Atom/XP the PaleMoon version XP and Atom CPU machines specifically as a courtesy to people running those operating systems or hardware In preliminary performance testing it PaleMoon to discontinue the Atom/XP version became clear that likely because of the complexity and size of our code base Atom-optimized binaries don t perform significantly better than regular builds of our next milestone v and as such we won t be continuing this specialized build from the next milestone release forward This will make things significantly less complex both for us and for the user and allows us to focus on a single path with no special exceptions or workarounds for problems ultimately leading to a better browser because we no longer have to maintain multiple branches as we do now Remark nbsp nbsp PaleMoon now joins IE and Google Chrome in finally dropping support for XP nbsp nbsp That leaves only Firefox nbsp nbsp It will be interesting to see how long FF will continue to support XP Opera still offers security and stability updates for XP Vista nbsp nbsp but not feature updates

According to all reports the Atom N570 is a dual-core 64-bit processor.....granted its not powerful but is it better to install WIN7 64-BIT on it rather than 32-bit?

A:can you run WNDOWS 7 64-bit on an Atom N570 processor?

It is used in alot of netbook, and is compatible with Win7 x64.
You will get more out of the basic OS manouvers when installing x64, however x86 applications needs to be emulated to run. (Not to worry, not really noticable speed-wise).

Some applications does not run well on x64 platforms, so you should really check with the specific applications that you are using. However I would recommend installing the x64 version.

1. You need the latest bios

2. Dismantle your netbook

3. Get some liquid nitrogen

4. NO POINT AT ALL

Hi all,

I am currently using an Acer Aspire One D255 netbook, with 1GB of RAM and a dual-core Intel Atom processor (@1.66GHz per core).

I would like to install VirtualBox to do some simple virtualization tasks, such as running Windows XP and some Android distros...

I posted this thread because I would like some advice if my processor and amount of RAM is good enough for VirtualBox.

Thanks

A:Intel Atom and 1GB of RAM good enough for VirtualBox?

It might be bit slow with that CPU, but give it a try.

Also, you will need a valid XP license for each VM... not an OEM license.

As far as RAM goes, that is where you will just have to test for yourself. Different CPU instruction sets can impact the minimum RAM required for XP to run "well". With an Intel i5, I can take XP's allocated RAM down to 28MB - so the VirtualBox app is only using ~45MB of RAM from the host computer. Now you would not be able to run very many XP's apps with that setting, but it proves that you don't need much RAM assigned to the Virtual Machine.

With other CPUs (that did not directly support the VT instruction set) I had to use 82MB of RAM - but the results are pretty subjective. I might have just been seeing XP responding faster with less RAM on the i5 because the CPU was faster.

Your mileage may vary - since the XP VMs that I work with are...
...for a very specific task,
...only run a few minutes each day,
...have most of the OS services disabled,
...not patched and
...have no anti-virus (AV) app installed.
They are frozen snapshots that lose any changes (infections) once the VM is turned off. If you are going to be putting the XP VM on the internet, then you'll want more RAM assigned, OS patches installed and an AV app.

If you need/want XP's SP3 installed, you might need more RAM.

I am just curious and want to know is the intel atom 1.6GHZ greater or equal to the speed of older P4 1.7GHZ processors.Like core to duo 1.7GHZ greater than P4 1.7GHZ as C2D has two cores. So is atom superior than P4 processors?

Those mini's are designed to use less power, so they shouldn't run that hot. Is the mini malfunctioning?

Trying to install windows 10 32 bit onto an HP Mini running an Atom 32 bit processor.
Created a win 10 32 bit bootable DVD which begins to load at which point it throws an error stating it is trying to run a 64 bit application on a 32 bit system.
The file is winload.exe and the error code is 0xc000035a.
I've tried it via USB and DVD now definitely with the x86 version of win 10 (unless it somehow creates an x86/64 bit hybrid) and still throws the same error.
Ram is 2 GB, HDD is 500 GB (upgraded from 160GB) and processor is 1.6 Ghz atom - shouldn't be a problem.
Any suggestion is appreciated.

The newer mini laptops, they mainly run on atom processors, right?

Are these enough (given adequte ram) to run applications?

I'm thinking Word mainly. Yet even on the older P4 processors, Word didn't exactly open in a snap. In fact it was pulling through an outright slumber just to announce itself. Say for the later version P4's, roughly 2004 or thereabouts, have these new atoms reached the same levels of processing or maybe even surpassed them? The machine will likely stay offline.

I do understand that the atom's take only about 4 watts of power, to conserve battery life which is important for my uses. But I need a machine that runs dependably and without much worry and lights a decent resolution screen viewable to many angles, prompted by a full size keypad. Oh and yes, one that I can replace the batteries on.

- Any tips appreciated. I've gotten some great help here.

A:shopping mini laptops/atom processors

My 9" Dell Mini came with Open Office and performs more than adequately as a word processing machine. I do have a full-size wireless keyboard and mouse attached, but that might not be necessary with a 10" machine.
I would consider thus computer near worthless if it wasn't online.

Basically what the title says. I have a new computer which I spent about 1300 dollars on. I built it myself and everything ran fine for about 6 months until I tried to overclock it. The bios and overclocking are pretty ***** proof since the motherboard is fairly new. You literally hit one button from normal to overclock. Since then when I boot the computer up the computer comes on for about 3 seconds, the monitor doesn't react at all, then it shuts itself off for another 3 seconds then boots up normally. Any ideas what the problem is or how to fix it? I've seen some similar cases on here but they aren't exactly the same.

A:I overclocked now my computer starts, turns itself off, then starts back up fine

Yes, turn off overclocking!

Hello all I have been looking for several days and I have yet to find any machines for sale that offer dual NIC support I have tried looking at the typical sites including Google but to no avail So I figured I would look for help here Ideally I need a box that uses the atom processor low power dual network cards and has a relatively large hard drive GB Anyone have for Atom w/2 large & NICs Linux Server HDD Intel Looking any suggestions I looked here http Looking for Linux Intel Atom Server w/2 NICs & large HDD www newegg com Product Product aspx Item N E and found an almost perfect match The only problem is that it does not have dual lan which is a requirement for me I could go and purchase a USB network adapter like this one http www newegg com Product Product aspx Item N E but I don t see that as an ideal solution compared to dual onboard network ports So reaching out to see if anyone knows of a Looking for Linux Intel Atom Server w/2 NICs & large HDD box like this that has dual NICs for a reasonable price under US Thanks nbsp

A:Looking for Linux Intel Atom Server w/2 NICs & large HDD

I'm not sure I know of any Atom based units that have dual-NICs. A machine you might want to consider is something like the Acer Revo 3610 (I'm thinking of getting one of these - since you're in the US it'll probably be half the price over there). The unit comes with an dual core Atom 330 (I believe this shows up as 4 CPUs because it has hyper-threading on each core, or so I've been told), 4GB or RAM, and a 500GB HDD. You could then purchase a USB-to-RJ45 adapter.

Please let me know which unit you buy, as I'm very interested in doing the same (I want a low power consumption Ubuntu server).

So my dad decided it was a good idea to upgrade his Netbook which he takes everywhere with him with an SSD so naturally I made sure I let him know beforehand that an SSD was not going to perform as advertised on his Netbook given that it only has a SATA Gb s interface and a pretty low end Intel Atom based CPU He agreed and still took a chance with it The problem is even in my low expectations I was sure it was still going to improve things quite a bit but the Netbook runs almost exactly the same with it which was pretty unexpected The SSD is a Crucial MX GB So Is there I'm missing is there a software I need to be running in order to get SSD Installed Netbook, an Atom-based on performance issues the most out of Crucial SSD's I'm running a Plextor SSD Installed SSD on an Atom-based Netbook, performance issues on my main gaming rig and it runs absolutely beastly without any software etc EDIT I made sure I changed the SATA Mode to ACHI before installing Windows Also I did not install any Intel Chipset drivers or anything on the Netbook given how old it is Windows should have the latest drivers for it I did run Windows Update Please I need your help guys thanks

A:Installed SSD on an Atom-based Netbook, performance issues

Did you apply all updates? Also, be sure to "optimize" the SSD, using Win8.1's disk tools. EVERY PC I've ever put an SSD into, even those with SATA 2 support, are much, much faster then they were. Your SSD may be bad... I've had this happen a few times.
