Microsoft's new Atom-powered Surface 3 starts at $499

Q: Microsoft's new Atom-powered Surface 3 starts at $499

Much of the lure surrounding Microsoft's long-rumored Surface Mini was the notion that it'd come in at a lower price point compared to its full-sized brother. That project was ultimately scrapped and instead, we got the Surface Pro 3 -...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This was sounding so promising then I got to 2GB RAM....

Have a look at your PC now - if you are running next to nothing over standard windows services, then you are probably somewhere around 1.2GB. Add an email client, some virus software a few Chrome Tabs and you will already be swapping away to page file as the OS starts to worry about memory and things will start to grind. How much would 2 more MB cost? Shame as otherwise it sounds quite a capable little machine.

Hey guys and gals my names Alex I m in the market right now for what to get for myself as far as a mobile pc goes I ve been doing a lot of research on Microsoft Laptop Pro on Surface 3 Opinions or s Surface Pro and honestly I m really happy with the results What I m looking for is pretty much what the SP has mobility but power Now that s just my general needs honestly I could probably do without the SP but I m starting to get into D modelling and along with D modelling a little bit of art I don t and probably won t do it professionally but more-so as something to Opinions on Surface Pro 3 or Laptop do on the side for fun and maybe to help developer buddies of mine looking for models or art of some kind but still mostly for fun By the way the version of the SP I m looking at right now is the i variant with the gb of ram and gb SSD Read and believe it s the best price wise for the uses I ll Opinions on Surface Pro 3 or Laptop be using it for ie d modelling drawing light games Opinions on Surface Pro 3 or Laptop etc Explained more below And I ve read up on the Yoga a little as well and I ve found that it costs about the same as the Pro for just about the same components The pen for the SP looks really good and from what I ve heard works really well with the tablet But besides just being a good tablet I m wanting something that can work as a bit of a laptop I m a big gamer BUT When I m on the road I m not the kinda guy to be interested in playing HEAVY games really When I m on the sail boat or on the road or something I d much rather have lighter less battery required games like Dwarf Fortress or small rogue likes anything that s fun requires thought and can drag me away from the drive unless I m driving So I think the SP would be perfect for Dwarf Fort and other small games I play simply because usually they require more processor and near to no graphics with the occasional exception So I guess really a tablet would be my best option at least personally I really don t want to lose that ability to use a pen in favor of being able to more easily modify and repair a device such as a laptop I guess the next question is is the Surface Pro my best option for tablets So far it s the most highest rated one I ve seen as good for regular consumers go instead of just professionals So I guess my question is does anyone have their own opinions on the SP or other tablets possibly cheaper that are just about as good Please try to avoid being biased or putting a product down due to a defect or something I want good sturdy advice with someone that s had a lot of experience with the SP while doing the same things I do or at least similar Cheers Alex PS Money isn t that much of a problem for me really but being cheap whilst also strong performance wise is a really good thing for me Used to work on a really really slow PC and really don t want to go back in time Also I am pretty good with computers I ve spent a good portion of my life working on them myself and even have built the PC I m using right now myself not that that matters too much but it s more to say that if there are things I have to do to improve performance of the SP or something etc to help that kind of thing nbsp

A:Opinions on Surface Pro 3 or Laptop

I should mention, the main use for this PC is NOT gaming, if you haven't already figured that out. It's meant more for browsing on the side of my main PC, for browsing and other things when I'm on the road, modelling when I'm away from my main PC, etc. NOT gaming.

It started last summer, I'd be watching a movie or streaming my local news when the fan would kick in to cool it down inside so I'd point my fan towards the rear of the W7 tower & with it on high it never happened after that.I recently read an article in one of my pc newsletters about thermal paste so if that is what mine needs so the fan won't race, is it reasonably easy to do such?
I did take my tower outside last summer to blow out any dust bunnies & it helped, but it has recent;ly started up again. I might take it outside again this weekend to blow out any dust bunnies. TIA

I ran out of USB ports, so I went in for a powered USB hub.

One by one, all the USB ports went out of action, and then windows (XP) would not boot normally.

That was quite a scare.

I detached all devices attached to the USB ports and ran Device Cleaner (thanks to Lookin)

The PC began to boot normally, and all but one USB came alive.

Any explanation?

I have a Rosewill RC-215 PCI SATA card with an Asus SATA DVD/CD Rom drive hooked up to one of the SATA ports. When I boot up, the motherboard (Asus P4PE) bios doesn't recognize my DVD drive(Asus DRW-24B1ST) so I can't boot up from a repair CD/DVD disk. But once I'm in Win2000, the DVD drive (Asus DRW-24B1ST) is recognized and usable. And it shows up in My Computer, and Device Manager.

I need some advice so I can figure out how to be able to boot up from a DVD/CD when I need to.

A:DVD/CD ROM not recognized by bios, but works after Win2000 starts

You may have to spend a few bucks and get a PATA/IDE DVD drive. You have drivers for the SATA card loaded after 2000 boots, so that is why it works.

Have a look through your BIOS and see if there is any option that supports your SATA card. I remember this back on the A7V boards with the Promise ATA 100 controller vs the 33/66 that was 'included' with the motherboard.

I assume you have looked for that option in the BIOS. If you have, and it doesn't exist, I think you will have to pick up a non SATA drive.

Also, I think its pretty cool that someone is still running 2k.

"I connected it to an external monitor, which will only display once windows has loaded"... This is normal behavior because the video signal to the external monitor is not sent until Windows loads. If you can see normal video, the motherboard video chip is good

Previously used this phone with Zune on my now-deceased PC with Windows XP (although even that took a while to establish). Now have an HP laptop with Windows 7 but Zune consistently refuses to recognize it and just comes up with the usual 'disconnect, turn off and reconnect'. I have downloaded both Microsoft Fixes and neither of them find anything wrong; I have uninstalled/reinstalled countless times; I have been into my certificates and made changes and/or deletions - and I m now simply running out of options ...and patience if I'm honest.

Almost all the internet advice suggests the fix is easy. Would the fact I've worked on this for over a month now suggest I am a one-off?!!!

Recently bought a MS mouse.

Have found that when I move the scroll wheel up or down more than really slowly
a little round icon appears with an up arrow and a down arrow. If the cursor is
above the icon, the page automatically scrolls upward without stopping, and the reverse for the cursor being below that icon. It starts without warning and always goes farther than I want and it goes so fast it's difficult, at best, to react to it before I'm way past what I want to see.

When I click, the thing goes away.

Any way to totally delete this annoying feature other than throwing the mouse away and
getting another Logitech?

Had a quick question, I got a computer that will start up but the screen wont come on. Im thinking that the light for the screen might have broke, from dropping the computer. Is there anyway to fix it? if so how can I do this and how much will it cost, or would I be better off sending it to a local computer shop?

A:Computer starts, screen won't come on

Is this a laptop? Its possible the screen is broke. Or you may have broken something else, Either way you will need to have it service. Your best bet would be to have a local computer shop look at it and give you a price. Then you can decide if its worth fixing. Or just replacing. It really depends on what was damage after you dropped it.

I am sure someone here my be able to tell you the cost if you want to go that route.

A:Windows 7/Microsoft Lifecam

We would need the model number to tell you a reason to why it is not working, and if there is a fix.. If there is no supported driver for windows7, you may need to attempt to use a Windows Vista driver and run it in compatibility mode.

If these options are not possible, you may have to purchase a new one.

Some possible info surfacing at OBR (He of the supposed-fake-but-actually-on-the-money-Bulldozer-leaks).
The graphs look off from what I've seen on the intertubes, but the 15% improvement over GTX 580 in 3DMark11 seems on the money, which should translate to ~22-25% better performance than the HD 6970 in gaming. This would tend to add weight to the decision to allow board partners to have custom HD 7950 designs at launch, since it would seem that the 7950 isn't going to be the performance equal of GTX 580/ overclocked 570. Custom SKU's would allow overclocked performance to better match the Nvidia cards -much the same strategy as Nvidia employed with the GTX 560Ti.

PCGH are reporting that the 7970 will hit retail at a ?539-549 price point.

A:Computer starts and restart in a loop

Follow these steps:

1. Remove all components from the motherboard except the CPU and a single stick of RAM. (If you do not have onboard VGA then you will have to keep the graphics card in place. Do not connect the HDD.)

2. Take the motherboard out of the case and place it on an anti-static surface.

3. Connect only the required wires from the PSU to the mobo such that the attached components receive power. (20+4 pin power connector, 4 pin CPU connector, etc.)

4. Ensure that the CPU heatsink is firmly locked in place.

5. Power on the PC and see if it POSTs and if you're able to get to BIOS.

Report back with the results.

It could be a temperature issue. You may want to replace the thermal paste on the CPU. Also, when you were trying to put the network card in you might have shorted something.

Did you use motherboard standoffs? Your system must be overclocked to use that RAM effectively. Is its voltage set too low? Perhaps the PSU is defective.

Hi, I have a ASUS Crosshair motherboard. I upgraded from my old power supply that was 500w to a Antec TP-750 that is 750w . My MB worked for a couple of minutes and then shuts off instantly. I powered it on again and it shuts off instantly about 10 seconds after the boot screen. The MB don't want to stay on at all. Can anybody tell me what is going on with the motherboard?

A:My motherboard wont stay powered on

You can try using you old power supply again ( if it isn't defective ) and see if you MB works again. If so, there could be a problem with your new Power Supply

Shane Baxter is reporting that the GTX 470 (448SP) is a $US299 MSRP part, if/when it hits the retail channel. A 550 watt PSU is recommended.
Further details to emerge on the nVidia twitter feed today....I guess.

Here's hoping for some availability, if only to re-ignite some price cuts.

Just removing the battery and replacing the battery doesn't allow the accumulated charge in the board's capacitors to dissipate. Leaving the battery out of a few hours (or overnight) wil allow the charge to dissipate or the same result can be achieved by pressing and holding down the Power button (after turning off the power at the wall)

My usual procedure is:

Remove power from the system.
Hit the power button to discharge the capacitors.
Move the CCMOS jumper to the clear position. (or press the CMOS button)
Remove the battery from the motherboard.
Spend an hour doing stuff you wouldn't be neglecting if you didn't have a computer
Replace the battery.
Place the jumper back in the normal position.
Restore power and boot up immediately into BIOS.
Select "Load Optimized Defaults" and set the recommended voltage for your RAM
Save & exit.
On reboot, go directly into BIOS and set the recommended timings for your RAM and any other options you'd like to set (i.e. boot order, voltages, power saving etc.)

Hi, got a big problem here and need your help to solve it.

Computer Specifications:
Motherboard: ECS Elitegroup 671T-M
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad
Memory: DDR2 667 -> 2 GB OCZ Ram (2 x 1GB)
Graphics: GeForce 6800GT

Computer starts but does not show any display. I know it starts, because all fans are working fine. Process light is blinking; however, the "power light" does not turn on. The CPU is not heating up. I took off rams, but there is no sound from the motherboard. Connecting monitor cable directly to the motherboard instead of the video card also doesn't work.

Does anyone have any idea of what would be the problem?
I would really appreciate any help. I am desperate!

A:Computer starts but does not boot

One more thing:
I don't think there is any problem with config. Because I have been using this computer with same specs for 2 years. Today morning it suddenly stopped working.

I recently put in an upgrade to my ram from 512 mb to 768 total Ram. I went to turn it on and I saw a spark where the P1 is at, and now the screen will not turn on, but my hard drive still turns on or runs? Did I short circuit my motherboard? could it be my video graphics card? any help on getting it back to working condition? thanks

A:My computer starts up but my screen will not turn on

Make sure you unplug mains lead after you shutdown. Remove the upgrade ram and try starting again. when you say "where the P1 is at" do you mean the power connector to the Mainboard?.

Could be a few things but i suspect you have blown a ram module or the PSU.

I turned on my computer this morning and too my horror it shut down after about 2 seconds.

I have tried other ram and things, no difference, the hard drive is starting because it vibrates when you lift it, all the fans are starting up fine.

I tried taking out all the wires and re-seating them, and I have noticed something - you know the yellow and black came with the 4 pins that goes into the motherdrive, when I take that out the machine stays on but theres no graphics on screen, but when I plug it back in - it just shuts down again.

Anyone know what is going on? or how to fix this?

You mean the four pin plug that powers the CPU on the Motherboard?

Try having a check on the CPU fan, it may be faulty
To test it, you could unplug the CPU Fan, and try turning on the computer (do note that this will only be a few seconds test)

Other than that, I'd say Power Supply faulty

Hi people, hope everyone is well...

I just noticed a strange buzzing noise coming from my computer a few days ago in the middle of the night so I pulled the power cable out and that fixed it, or so I thought.
Now when i start it up, it powers up, goes through post etc, but doesn't even start booting windows, then a sort of like dull click is heard and it turns off. Then when I turn it on again, it asks if I want to boot using last know safe config etc, and using the last known config is the only way I can get it to boot. Works absolutely fine other than that.

This leads me to believe its probably not a hardware problem but I have no idea what it could possible be...

Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance,

I've had this computer for 2 yrs since I built it. Has a Asus M2N-SLI mobo with athlon 6400 x2. 4gigs ram, Nvidia 9800 gtx, 600W PS. Most of the time runs fine, no signs of problem. What type of PSU you got? That 8600 is pretty low powered and should only take about bout 350/400w min. Also, is your grfx card the 512mb version or the 1gb version? Also, the crashing during resource heavy games may be due to the 2gb of RAM. Most resource heavy games these days require at the very least 4gb of RAM, as they are >resource heavy< games.

Is this a sign of bad PSU or bad motherboard?

When my PC is shut down, after a few seconds later, the CPU fan starts twiching, then the chassis fan does the same. A little later, both fans start turning slowly.

When I turn the PC on, everything is normal. After shut off, the same thing.

I heard that sometimes a temperature sensor forces the fans to turn even when powered down. Is this it? But the fans keep turning indefinitely once they stop twitching and start turning.

The twitching noise is very annoying. I have to cut the power off from the switch at the back of the PSU. Of course that will drain my clock battery sooner and I now have to use two switches (one from PSU and one at the front as usual.)

while Corsair XMS2 has 5-5-5-18 timings and 19v listed.

Might want to set the timings to the 5-5-5-18 and 19v. Since it sounds like your overclocking the regular XMS2 ram which cannot handle it. Or maybe sell it on ebay and get Dominator. Mixing 2 high end rams with dif timings is not a good thing.

Will there be a way to do that? Will there be a way to deploy updates when they come out? Or just one or the other? Is that pretty much up to the individual vendor? Do they have to make a special package that we put on the server? Or can we make one ourselves? Would that be hard?

I just bought parts (over a period of time) for a new custom computer and I have been slaving away at pulling it together. I have everything set up, but the computer won't start. I tried stripping it so now I only have the CPU, PSU, hard drive, graphics card, and motherboard attached. It seems like as soon as the fan for the CPU starts, the whining--and the shutting down--starts. There's nothing in the way of the fan at all. Can anybody help me?

A:Computer starts up and then shuts right back down

Some motherboards have a 4 or 6 pin connector near the CPU socket. Make sure you have the correct power supply plug connected. It is easy to plug in the wrong connector. Even if your power supply has a 4 pin connector and the motherboard has a 6 pin plug, you can sometimes plug in the 4 pin plug and it will boot normally. There are many other things that can cause this symptom....

i tried to check the inside if some parts are loosen or not in its right place, they seem to be okay.

what should i do now?

before this happened, i was having a problem with the windows itself because it crashed when i downloaded something, it might be a virus. but the bios was okay and then the cpu fell to the floor now im not sure if the mobo is still fine. help me please...

A:Can't see anything when cpu starts?

Is the monitor getting any power? If not then try and reconnect everything again. Check that everything is well placed in the mobo.

If your monitor is getting power and still displays nothing it means there's a problem with the video adapter. If you have a video card, try and plug in the monitor tightly.

If nothing works, you may have damaged your CPU mate.

A:New Build won't stay powered on

Well you've boiled down the problem to either motherboard or power supply. Your testing suggests that the motherboard is bad, but I'd borrow a friends PSU and give it another whirl. If it works then you have a PSU problem and if it doesn't then the problem is the motherboard. Did you take the motherboard out of the case and try to start the computer in the box the motherboard came in? All you really need to do to start the thing up is to plug in the power supply, put the CPU and heatsink and fan back on (don't forget to plug in the fan) and then temporarily short the power switch pins for a second or so and your computer should start up. If you try the box method you then eliminate the case as a potential short.

Your computer isn't overheating, five seconds isn't enough time for your processor to overheat. And a working motherboard with a working brain (CPU) would give error codes, so I'm guessing that your motherboard is toast.

I currently have a pc that was windows 2000 that is now not working. I recently put a new hard drive into the pc and it currently store all my music (itunes) and document flies. I would like to if it is possible to take the hard drive out and connect it to my other computer externally. The only other issue is the other computer is running on vista. Is it possible to do this?

A:Can I make my internal HD external and I change the type of microsoft it runs with?

Yes, you can take that hard drive out of the 2k machine and read it just fine in Vista. What you can't do is take your OS drive from 2k and boot another machine with it, but I don't think that is what you were asking.

Are you getting the right drivers for your video card? Make sure if you have an onboard video card that its disabled in the BIOS. I can't really think of much since you tried certain things. If nothing helps I'd try calling NVIDIA or Dell.

Ok, so i got kinda a blue screen yeah . I tried to start a video chat on msn, well the computer decided not to like that. Anyway, now i get this message every time i try to install my sound drivers

"Microsoft bus should be loaded into your system before installing realteck HD audio driver"

My mobo

Using onboard sound.

Googled, read, looked around, ran windows repair, help? pls? thanks guys

A:Microsoft bus should be loaded into your system.... "error"

after googleing, i found 2 potential solutions:

Right click on My Computer, go to Properties, Hardware Tab, Device Manager. Look for any yellow bubbles next to the devices. If you see any, right click on it and click install driver. Select the option to find the drivers yourself, the next screen should allow you to browse and navigate to that folder. If the drivers still don't install then go to in IE and get any hardware updates you can get. The MS bus driver might be an update you need to get.Click to expand...

I installed WinXP once more, installed SP2 and then the Sound Driver.
Again it didnt work.

Then I remembered that i actually had changed a sound card setting in the bios. (No i did not diasble the soundcard )

The case i have installed this Mboard in has a front pannel.
And the Mboard has a front panel connector.

To connect the front pannel I had turned to the manual to get the rigtht pins set up.
The manual states on page 2-31 that:
"The default setting for this connector is legacy AC'97 audio, if you want to use the High Definition (Azalia) audio features, set the AC97 & Azalia Link A in the BIOS to Azalia."

Well this case does not use a high-definition audio front panel, so of course i had diasbled the Azalia Link i Bios.
(It was enabled in the Bios even when the manual said that the default setting was AC'97, ow well ... )

For "fun" i just tried to put it back to the setting it was when i installed the Mboard (Azalia), and then, bingo, the sound card worked in windows.Click to expand...

seems like a very rare problem.

Lots of valuable information in that file I'd like to access. I was able to create a new Outlook file in safe mode so I guess the program is OK.

It was suggested to me recently the cause may have been due to me having Microsoft Service Pack 1 at the time. I had not updated to Service Pak 2 (which I now believe has been updated to Service Pak 3). Has anyone had experience with this and, if so, do you think there's a chance that if I update my Service Pak that I might still have a chance of recovering the data I had in my original Outlook file?

A:Still unable to open Microsoft Outlook

I dont think just upgrading to service pack 3 would do any good.

May be you need some more luck there.

A:Microsoft ACPI compliant system? too many?

That is not a normal thing imo.

In Bios;

Make sure your Advanced setting for Plug and Play OS is set to Yes.

Then, under Power, set the ACPI APIC Support to Disabled for now.

Boot and see what, if anything, changes.

I just bought a Razer Reclusa keyboard and the only problem I'm having is that it does not "power up" so to speak until after post. If I needed to get into the BIOS I could press [del] a million times and nothing would happen. Once windows starts up, it works fine. Is this just the way the keyboard is? I'd appreciate any info.

A:Microsoft Razer Reclusa Keyboard

Haven't looked up that keyboard, but I think I know what it is (the fix) anyway.

You need to get into your BIOS (with another keyboard, ideally PS/2 if you have the connection)
Then set Enable for USB Keyboard/Mouse support

I think that may be a bit of a mind teaser to do, but I'm sure you'll work it out

My up, even blanks and determining this I noticed that the screen would blank and the system would halt whatever it was doing within mins of turning the computer on This nd problem didn t occur at the same time the video card went bad it happened about a few weeks afterwards I went ahead and got a new video card which fixed the initial graphics problem but the screen blanking is My display blanks and system locks up, even before windows starts. still continuing This even occurs if I m in My display blanks and system locks up, even before windows starts. the BIOS setup screen trying to see if maybe something screwy happened So now I effectively can t even use the system it doesn t matter if I boot it in Safe Mode and as I mentioned My display blanks and system locks up, even before windows starts. with the BIOS screen it doesn t even matter if windows has been loaded I have a battery backup so it s hard to believe that the video card and motherboard got fried somehow I tried about times in a row to at least attempt to backup some things on the main HD as I m thinking I should just wipe the thing and reinstalling everything But with it blanking out even in the BIOS screen I m wondering if it would do any good or if I d be wasting a lot of time and effort The only other thing that happened during this time was that iTunes locked up and I had been trying to reinstall it during the time I was using the bad video card the bad video card had constant and animated artificing all over the screen really annoying I seriously doubt iTunes had anything to do with it but it s the only other problem I can think of that occured Any help in narrowing down the problem would be greatly appreciated -Dae nbsp

Replace the power supply which is the usual cause, if the monitor works well on other systems... or buy a power supply tester, which will be invaluable for years and years.

You have to think about how much you have used this five year old computer. It may have too many over-used, or worn components, as well.

I have just recently bought a computer that someone else made. He told me that the only thing the computer needed was memory. Well I bought the correct memory from, stuck it in there, and when I start it up nothing appears on-screen. The motherboard is a Biostar M7VIG 400 and the memory is DDR PC3200 unbuffered, non-ECC. When I hit the power button, I hear the Hard drive start but that is it. In order for me to turn the computer off I have to hit the power switch on the power supply. If anyone knows how this can be fixed it would be greatly appreciated if you could tell me and ask if you need anymore information. Thanks.

A:Computer starts up, but nothing appears on-screen.

The memory said was compatible with my mobo was PC2700 not PC3200. Even though the lower density (256MB and 512MB) are PC3200 the 1 GB is PC2700. The man said that the only memory that will work with the mobo is PC3200 unbuffered, non-ECC, and CL3. I found that the memory gave me was PC2700, unbuffered, non-ECC and CL2.5. Will this have any effect?

A:Audio and desktop display starts skipping/jumping every second or so..

Try trading out everything to find out what hardware is defective... at this point you don't know where to begin, I suppose.
SAFE Mode: When you cold boot to Safe Mode, dos the problem appear? If not, your video graphics port may be bad.
Video Graphics: Try any different video graphics card. If you have integrated on-board video, try installing any video card... pci, agp, pci-e... whatever your computer motherboard allows.
Power Supply: Any power supply is capable of strange things, and Compaq power supplies are stranger than most. You might be able to borrow one to test... or replace yours for under $50
Optical Drive. These, too, can cause strange problems as they age. Disconnect what you have to test, or try another temporarily.
Hard Drive (try any other hard drive, install with your recovery disc, then see if the problem is still there.) This will tell you if it is a windows install problem or a hard drive in the midst of failing.
Audio socket? try any PCI audio card, if on integrated audio, or to test if current card is bad. )
Monitor... Does the problem occur when plugged into another monitor?
If you have a floppy drive, borrow a Windows 98 or Windows ME boot floppy, and see what happens... otherwise, boot to a CD.
Other hard ware item, if bad, can emit spurious responses to input... anything in a pci slot.
Likliest culprit, based on our work on a huge number of Compaqs would be the power supply. Second choice, the video port.
Good luck. Let us know what you determined the problem to be.

Hello, last night, I was having problems with my computer overheating while playing video games, and then I remembered, when it over heats, to make sure all dust is cleaned from your computer. So, therefore, this morning when I woke up, I took some q-tips, and proceeded to clean my computers fan, and RAM chip bus. Then, when I tried turing it back on, it wouldn't boot up. My OS would not boot up, and nothing would show on my screen. I checked for anything I must have unpluged, and re checked everything, but it's still not powering up. Does anyone have any suggestions? I think it has something to do with my RAM chip bus. SOmething musta burnt out. Any ideas would be perfect.

A:Seems like something isn't being powered up..

Qtips, and the motions of cleaning with the use of them, can introduce static electricity.
Go back to basics... the most fundamental setup you can create... power supply, video graphics port or card, one memory module, and a floppy disk with MSDOS or Windows 98 Boot/Startup, or if you have no hard drive, a boot to a CD-ROM such as Windows 98 or Windows ME. Boot to SAFE MODE if possible.
Does it boot? If not, you know you may have a problem. So change the optical drive, and try again./
If it does boot, change memory modules and try again. Still working?
Keep on adding one component at a time... then change to the hard drive, removing the discs from the floppy or opitcal drive.
Keep toying with the system to get something to boot, still keeping it as simple as you possibly can.
Progressively change and test. You can learn a lot in the process.

A:Help! Computer starts for 2 seconds then shuts off!

This going to sound real annoying to you.

But remove the motherboard again !
Check when removing that all posts and wires (bare) are not touching eachother
If possible (better to do this) "bench test"
ie nothing connected to back of motherboard except video (onboard preferably - if pos) and power, (and ram and cpu and heatsink/fan)
Short the power pins (screwdriver will do) and hopefully it turns on.
To turn off pull the power cord (or short the power pins for 3 secs)

If that worked, do one thing added at a time
Then re-install m/b and test again.

How about the ram chips, try removing one by one and use them intersectively, see if it will change anything, if it doesnt, then have the processor out and fireup the board, then after, insert the processor and fire it up without the ram, all that should give u a warning alarm, then after proving that the board is fine, with those alarms, then u can instert one ram, at a go, but make sure u interchange them.If it fails, let us know for further help.

MoBo: Soyo Dragon Plus 2 (ATX, 478 socket)
PSU: 350w w/ X-dreamer case
CPU: 2.6Ghz Intel P4

still had same problem. replaced PSU w/ 400w, same problem, replaced CPU w/ 2.4Ghz P4, same problem. thought it was a bad CPU because when start it up w/o the 4 pin connecter plugged into the motherboard, it runs the fans w/o powering down.

Providing you used fresh thermal paste and the heatsink is properly attached, I suspect a faulty cpu.
