I upgraded to win10 from win7 and started having a problem so I reverted back to win7. The problems from the upgrade followed me back with the revert to win7. The problems have to do with files and folders. I cannot create a file (doc) and save it to my documents file folder. I get a message "you don't have permission to save to this location" contact administrator. Incidentally, I'm the only user of this computer and always have been. I also get a message when trying to open an existing file " document file is locked for editing by (me or unknown user)
I'm totally confused not knowing how to get by this "file locked for editing" and "administrator privilege" needed.
Please tell me how to get around this.
Thanks in advance for any and all advice.
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My guess is it's because you have an older laptop with Intel GMA 950 graphics. It only support up to DX9.http://www.intel.com/products/chips...http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-10/why-has-my-directx-reverted-back-to-9ex-after-win10-upgrade/93.html
I have an HP Pavilion laptop that came with Win 8.1 installed. Last year, I upgraded it to Win 10, and the upgrade went smoothly, but the HDMI out didn't work any more. Since I use that a lot, and I couldn't find an easy solution for it, I used the recover feature to revert back to Win 8.1.
I plan to try Win10 again when the new edition comes out in August, but I'm aware of the July 29 deadline to upgrade to Win 10 in order for the upgrade to be free.
Am I correct in assuming that when I upgraded to Win 10 last year, that I'm now permanently registered with Microsoft, and I can wait until August to upgrade to the new version? Or do I have to be running Win10 before July 29 in order for the new version to be free? I don't want to install the thing twice in two weeks if I don't have to.
Thanks for any help.
You "should" be fine. Can't say 100% now, but your PC should have gotten a digital entitlement for Windows 10, via the free upgrade. Assuming you upgraded and activated. You don't lose the digital entitlement when you do the rollback.http://www.tenforums.com/installation-setup/57058-upgraded-win10-then-reverted-back-am-i-still-registered.html
This is a new Dell Inspiron N5050 Computer and came with a discount coupon for the windows 8 upgrade. When I thought it was finished downloading - the screen went blank. I waited and waited and then rebooted. When it came back on it stated that the download failed and reloaded Windows 7. When it reverted back to Windows 7, the desktop time/temp icon is gone as well as the scrolling screen icons. I DO NOT WANT THE WINDOWS 8 NOW but I do want my computer to function as it did before. WHAT CAN I DO TO GET IT BACK TO WHAT IT WAS BEFORE? ( also, I do not understand much about computers) PLEASE HELP!!!!

It seems according to the update history, my computer is trying to upgrade itself to Windows 10 automatically. Can it actually do this without asking me? I didn't reserve the upgrade so it shouldn't be trying to upgrade. Did it fail noticing that I didn't reserve the upgrade?
Scared and Very Confused - Windows 10
I'm Frank, SC, US.
I really wrecked my HP laptop with Windows 8.1.
There is so many issues that I believe a system reset would be appropriate, I've done it many times on other machines and at least twice on this one. But no matter what I try, SYSTEM REFRESH nor SYSTEM RESET will not run. Various ACCESS DENIED errors, won't uninstall a program from the control panel, if I create a new word doc, I can't save the doc.
I have administrator access, most obvious goof is under THIS PC, LOCAL DISK (C:) properties shows 0 bytes used, 0 bytes free.
Please get back to me if you have any ideas.
Thank you in advance.
THIS PC, LOCAL DISK (C:) properties shows 0 bytes used, 0 bytes free.
Unless Windows is on a different drive letter, it is virtually impossible for C: to have 0 bytes. You can't boot into Window if there are no Windows files.
Go to Start/Search and type diskmgmt.msc, right click the diskmgmt results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Disk Management window, please take a screenshot of the lower pane of the Disk Management window and attach it in your next post.

Anytime. Glad to have been of assistance. Maybe try again before the free period expires. It is possible they will have worked out some bugs and release more updates to W10. After up grading my Aspire R3-471TG from Windows 8.1, my start button and winows button now do nothing, The Notifications (Action centre) doesnt open, I cant get to a Win 10 menu stuck in desktop and the sticky screen corners dont bring up menus any more. I tried running SFC from the command prompt, and apparently there are no corrupt files. Can any one tell me how to fix this ? or how to go back to Win 8.1 !!
Here is an article that should help you get your system back to Windows 8.1.
So I have gone through all the usual hoops I can find on the upgrade issues mostly based off the one error I have managed to get spit back xC - x This is partition prevents boot my or upgrade 7 win10 windows Something on usually found to be a driver error but after removing everything possible to no avail I said screw it and went for the clean install The install media would get stuck at the spinning dots even after booting directly to it that is until I removed the older hard drives namely the one with my win install I now have a clean win sitting pretty on an SSD but here goes my issue if I plug the win drive back in with computer off I get stuck on spinning dots again After restart I can get a repair screen which only leads to a black screen with a mouse Take out the Something on my windows 7 partition prevents win10 upgrade or boot one drive again and I can get in Fun stuff so far What is most curious I dropped in the drive when win was up yay sata hotswap and it read the other two partitions great But the win partition isn't read leading me to believe something is corrupted there Ultimately and ideally I would like to do an upgrade to Something on my windows 7 partition prevents win10 upgrade or boot keep my files around and not deal with restoring everything less ideally would be getting the win install to see the win install partition but I would bet these issues are one in the same I have run chkdsk and sfc scannow no errors on either For record is what I have in win and when I hotswap this drive in on C will not show up TIA

I received the free win 10 upgrade from an invitation to reserve the upgrade. The other day, a Ransomware hit me, and though I believe I may have immediately tracked & deleted all affected files I could find, I hardly believe I could be so skilled as to be successful.
I had this happen last year, and ended up formatting the unit, and reloading Win 7. I don't want to have to go back to 7, but how do I get another Win 10? Is there a key I need to find & save? A free site that I can get a copy on a flash drive to load from? Any help would be appreciated. I have no clue how to proceed since it's an online download, and once formatted, the unit won't be able to get online without the OS
you can download the newest build of windows 10 > http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softw...load/windows10
boot from the setup media - remove every partition (wipe) the HDD
and clean install widows 10
since you already had win7 and windows 10 on that PC - if asked for product key - just skip that screen
I am not sure if I have win 8.1 pro or win 8.1Says 8.1 pro in mscinfo but doesnt allow me to install win 8.1 pro features. Anyway that is not the issue I am writing about. Issue is , I had my laptop crashed 1 month after I installed Win 10. it required HD replacement by HP, at which stage I was told not to ugrade to win 10 as my laptop will not handle it. My Question is:free upgrade to wn 10 ends soon.what happens when my OS will no longer be supported by MSWhat is actually the problem that causes HP notebooks to crash? Is there a feature in win 10 that can be turned off to avoid causing the crash?Atleast we can keep up with the updates!! Need some help to understand what the actual issue is and if there has been some workaround found by now.SDhttp://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Win10-upgrade-deadline-arrived-cannot-upgrade-what-next/td-p/5688369
I have a friend who wants some help. She has a computer that was used by her grandson. It was Windows 8 when she got it but we upgraded it to 8.1 and set it up as her computer. She has been using it for about eight or nine months now with no problems, it seemed there was no trace of her grandson't stuff but she has just rung me to say that when she turns it on now, it goes to the log in part for her grandson and she also thinks it is now Windows 8. again, not 8.1. I have to help her tomorrow and would appreciate any suggestions of how it can be fixed. Has anyone else had this happen?
First off verify that it is in fact 8.0 and not 8.1. Open the System screen and see what it lists under Windows edition. On my PC in small print it says Windows 8.1, but the large blue text to the right just says Windows 8. If it is Windows 8.0, my guess is the grandson did a factory recovery to fix or cover up something he did. If it is just Windows 8.0, doing all the available Windows updates should make the upgrade to 8.1 available as an option in the Windows Store. You do the upgrade though the windows store. I have uninstalled hitman pro and malwarebytes and have ran a full scan with norton.dont understand why this has happened as my laptop was fine when I turned it off last night.*
Please help as I hate the fact something is wrong with my laptop as I have always looked after it. Anti virus defrag ccleaner etc.thanks in advance any advice would be really really*appreciated
Hi and Welcome to the forum.
Firtst off it really doesn't help to post three topics all the same, it will likely confuse the isse. Put a post on each of the the other threads to say your problem is being dealt with here!
Now try to boot into Safe Mode and try a system restore to a point before you installed FM 2014. Norton will stop a system restore in normal mode but Norton is disabled in Safe Mode.
After converting back to Windows 7 Pro, my Norton security provided by my Comcast account, thinks I am running Windows 10 and will only let me try to load a version for Windows 10.https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/811cd91b-7f22-40e0-8ba6-716a18fe8056/reverted-back-to-windows-7-norton-antivirus-thinks-i-am-running-windows-10?forum=W8ITProWTG

Hi there I recently purchased an Acer Aspire for the business amp I was very specific at time of purchase that it must NOT run Vista as the accounting software I run is not compatible with Vista All went well for about a month amp then the accounting software started to play up I contacted their tech support people amp they talked me through a few fixes however during these fixes we discovered latent COMPATIBILITY FOLDERS on the computer that simply should not be on a machine unless it is running Vista I contacted the store I bought it from amp they admitted that it had originally come with Vista but had been upgraded to run Windows Home Premium prior to purchase He told me to come in amp they would remove the components that had not been removed properly during upgrade I was unable to go in that day but told them to expect me within a day or two at the most however before I could get back the following night in FROM Windows After laptop TO reverted update, 7 Vista????? fact the computer ran some scheduled updates from Microsoft amp when I went to use it the next day it After update, laptop reverted FROM Windows 7 TO Vista????? was all sorts of wrong It didn't even look the same desktop amp files were missing or moved When I went to online help I kept getting diverted to Vista help rather than Windows help I contacted the computer store again amp they said that the update may have found these compatibility folders amp freaked out amp reverted the machine After update, laptop reverted FROM Windows 7 TO Vista????? back to Vista Anyway I have lost loads After update, laptop reverted FROM Windows 7 TO Vista????? of files that I had not yet backed up as I was planning to do this immediately prior to taking the laptop back to the shop so I had everything backed up amp my accounting software won't work The shop said they can restore Windows but probably can't restore any lost data as they are only retail So here are my questions Is what they saying happened even possible Is my data lost forever or can it be restored by a computer repair technician Any suggestions Cheers Skye
Sorry, but a Windows Update WILL NOT revert a upgraded Windows 7 back to Vista like that.
It sounds a lot more likely that the computer store messed up and did a factory restore from the recovery partition on your computer, and that is what restored Vista since that was on your computer from the factory.
If this is what they did, then that most likely may have also wiped out all data that was previously on your computer for good.
I wouldn't let them get away with trying to cover up their mistake with a BS line about it being caused by a Windows Update.
Ok so my laptop's interface for some reason has been changed somehow to the windows classic interface and I'm not able to change it back. There's not even an option for it when I right click on the desktop, go to properties and such. Also, I'm not able to pick up a signal to connect to the internet. Things are slow loading as well. I don't think it's a virus or anything so I didn't bother including a HJT log. I had installed the Firefox plug in for Windows Media Player recently, but even after that I wasn't having problems. After doing that I restarted like it told me. I don't know if that might have any sort of impact or not. It just happened randomly and abruptly. I would really appreciate any sort of help on this issue. Thanks guys.
Only one idea right off, try system restore to a time when things were right.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/318496/interface-reverted-back-to-windows-classic-on-xp/

Hi, Do you know what is the error message ? No error message we or Microsoft won't be able to help. Regards.http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/win10-upgrade/td-p/5610594
I have an older laptop (probably 6-7 years old, Dell Inspiron running Windows 7) and its been running fairly slow lately. I saw a notice that today is the last day to upgrade to Win10 for free. Just looking for some good advice on whether or not I should even consider upgrading.
My first thought is that, with an older machine, I probably have a lot of junk on my hard drive causing the slowness so I need to clean it up (which means I'll miss the "today is the last day" bit...but do I really care?). I also think maybe my processor won't be able to handle the new version, but not sure if that's really a concern or not.
Can I ask for some advice? Thanks

it not - July 2016 is
whats the exact model and also the service tag number
make sure there are windows 10 drivers available for the PC
you could always make a recovery set of DVDs (if you havent already , and i would advise you make them anyway) and do a windows 7 clean install
you may have a lot of startups or even malware on the PC slowing it down
When Win10 was released, I was offline.
Now I can't upgrade! I've reserved an upgrade, but it won't ask me to upgrade!
Welcome to the forum,
It hasn't asked me yet either, but that doesn't mean you can't upgrade.
You can do it manually, starting at step three here,

My wife's computer could not upgrade to win 10 cause it had an old video card. I upgrade motherboard and video card. Win 7 is registered, but can not upgrade. The free upgrade tool still shows the other video card. Tried the media creation tool and still goes back to the upgrade box with the old card. Is there anyway to erase that upgrade box and redue it?
Check for any left over files or drivers from your old video card. Windows is still finding it somewhere. Check your device manager 1st just to see if its listing 2 video cards, then check your program folders for any left overs. Also just for backup reasons, download a program on this forum called Showkey which will give you the information on your currant Windows Key, incase you need it to upgrade to Windows 10.
When I upgrade my 32 bit win 7 computer to win 10 can I choose to upgrade to 64 bit win 10?
You cannot do an in place upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit. Going from 32-bit to 64-bit requires a clean install.http://www.tenforums.com/installation-setup/56098-upgrade-32-bit-win-7-64-bit-win10.html
Has anyone upgraded to Windows 10 on the hp 110-414 have you got any problems or bugs with it and is it running well on it and do you think I should upgrade
Because you may find that you need to install the Windows 10 driver for it after upgrading. With most notebooks there are two or three different adapters that could be installed. It helps to what is installed in yours. Use the search functiion in the forum and search for windows 10 wifi driver. You will notice that many members did not take the time to either locate the driver or know what is installed.http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Operating-Systems-and-Recovery/Hp-110-414-Win10-Upgrade/td-p/5579588
I just found this on my Laptop.

Not sure why you wouldn't just use this to fill in your system spec's page instead of posting a pdf :/

I made the mistake of upgrading Windows to Windows on my Dell XPS X laptop before reading that Dell does NOT intend to upgrade drivers to support the laptop on the newer OS I reverted back to due to the fans running all the time and the laptop was always running hot The reversal process appeared to go fine without errors but almost every day since August the system will suddenly stop and reboot It always hangs on the welcome screen After looking up the issue on various forums I found that a temp fix that sometimes helps is to turn off the wireless lan card during hard shutdown and restart or sometimes booting to safe mode with a command prompt and running chkdsk f It did it again today and I started digging deeper I have turned off the automatic restart in properties and now it should BSOD me with a more specific error The error log indicates a LONG list of the same error I'm not savvy Windows random reverted to reboots, upgraded to locked 10, 7 7, up now enough to begin to understand this Thanks in advance Log Name System Source Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power Date PM Event ID Task Category Level Critical Keywords User SYSTEM Computer John-PCLaptop Description The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first This error could be caused if the system stopped responding crashed or lost power unexpectedly Event Xml lt Event xmlns quot http schemas microsoft com win events event quot gt lt System gt lt Provider Name quot Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power quot Guid quot C Windows 7 upgraded to 10, reverted to 7, now random reboots, locked up B A- - C -AC E- C D B quot gt lt EventID gt lt EventID gt lt Version gt lt Version gt lt Level gt lt Level gt lt Task gt lt Task gt lt Opcode gt lt Opcode gt lt Keywords gt x lt Keywords gt lt TimeCreated SystemTime quot - - T Z quot gt lt EventRecordID gt lt EventRecordID gt lt Correlation gt lt Execution ProcessID quot quot ThreadID quot quot gt lt Channel gt System lt Channel Windows 7 upgraded to 10, reverted to 7, now random reboots, locked up gt lt Computer gt John-PCLaptop lt Computer gt lt Security UserID quot S- - - quot gt Windows 7 upgraded to 10, reverted to 7, now random reboots, locked up lt System gt lt EventData gt lt Data Name quot BugcheckCode quot gt lt Data gt lt Data Name quot BugcheckParameter quot gt xffffffffc lt Data gt lt Data Name quot BugcheckParameter quot gt xfffff f ce lt Data gt lt Data Name quot BugcheckParameter quot gt xfffff c lt Data gt lt Data Name quot BugcheckParameter quot gt xfffff c b lt Data gt lt Data Name quot SleepInProgress quot gt false lt Data gt lt Data Name quot PowerButtonTimestamp quot gt lt Data gt lt EventData gt lt Event gt
Whatever you do to fix will never make your laptop run as it should.
- Backup all your data
- Do a clean install or use the Dell factory recover disk.
I installed Windows Live Mail but didn't like it. So, I uninstalled it and reverted back to Windows Mail. Now, when I select some pictures and right-click, send to> mail recipient I am allowed to set the size of the attached pictures but the mail client never opens. Instead the attachement sizer window just closes and I'm back to my desktop. I tried setting the defaults in Windows Mail but that didn't seem to help. Any ideas? Thanks.
1. In Vista... click "Start" (the orb with the flag, bottom left of your screen.
2. Click "Default Programs"
3. Click "Set your default programs"
4. Click "Windows Mail"
5. Click "Set this program as default
Now you should be able to right click your picture, click send and it will now open Windows Mail for you.
My wife's laptop auto updated to Windows 10 last week and everything had been working perfectly until yesterday. Suddenly her desktop/start menu reverted from the new Windows 10 start menu to the old Windows 8.1 desktop. I did some searching and supposedly if you go through control panel, appearance, taskbar and start menu properties there should be a start menu tab where you select which one you want. That tab doesn't exist on her machine or mine for that matter. I also verify that notebook mode was turned off.
How can I get her desktop/start menu back to the standard Windows 10 style?
Right-click the desktop and select personalize. Then select the default Windows 10 theme.
Also, are you running ClassicShell?
My current computer has a retail copy of Win8. I'm building a new PC this weekend and I want to utilize the free upgrade to Win10 from my current retail version of 8, but I understand the free upgrade is tied to hardware.
Would my best option be to migrate Win8 to the new PC and upgrade from there? Alternatively, would I be better to just upgrade to 10 now and then migrate to the new PC afterwards? I imagine I can just discover the product key using something like Belarc Advisor, but then I don't know if the key will be accepted for activation on the new hardware... Thoughts?
I am having issues with USB devices dropping since I upgraded to windows 10. I have tried updating device and use drivers, reinstalling devices and changing power settings for devices. This is a pain as I need to regularly make skype business calls and can't now via headset. Any help greatly appreciated.
Hi all, i have a Precision M4700 with windows 7 SP1 OEM, i'm confused, can i install windows 10 pro for free or do i have to purchase an upgrade license (if i do it now, before the 29th July) ?
Consider i work in an Enterprise environment but the license applied to my PC is the OEM, not the one under Corporate agreement.
Thanks for a clarification/confirmation.
Yes, you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free. You will also need to update the drivers to Windows 10 as well. Click the link below to download the drivers for your M4700.

I know someone with a Vista (Business) PC and he received a free upgrade notice to Win10. Is this correct and if so does it just mean that the OS will be installed without saving apps and files?
I know someone with a Vista (Business) PC and he received a free upgrade notice to Win10. Is this correct and if so does it just mean that the OS will be installed without saving apps and files?Click to expand...
The free upgrade applies to qualified computers that are running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8/8.1.
It does NOT apply to computers that are running Windows Vista.
Been a long time 5+ years since I reloaded windows. Is it better to reload it and go to Win10 or
Just go to Win 10 and hope for the best.... Only problem is the browsers are running a little slow
and have to be restarted
Going straight to Windows 7 and using Windows 7 key to activate it is generally more reliable than upgrading.http://www.tenforums.com/installation-setup/45754-win-7-scratch-before-win10-upgrade.html
Hi all trying to upgrade my desktop self-built from Win to Win but it keeps getting stuck at configuring settings Since at that point there is no task manager or anything and my system has Win10 at upgrade keeps stuck 86% getting no hdd activity light it's hard to tell if anything is still happening The system has an ssd so should not be slow I've updated several laptops also crappy Win10 upgrade keeps getting stuck at 86% ones with slow hdd and it worked for all of them never taking longer than couple of hours Now the upgrade on my desktop has been running for hrs mostly stuck at that point I tried to upgrade it once already last fall and then I did not have this issue But system was very unstable and hence unusable with win and hence reverted back to So what are my options to troubleshoot I only have keyboard and mouse attached both USB and no other USB devices There are lots of applications installed and configured dev environment for my personal projects so I would really really like to avoid a clean install If it matters it it win professional and there is enough free space on c drive Should I unplug mouse and keyboard or even display dvi-dhttp://www.tenforums.com/installation-setup/57202-win10-upgrade-keeps-getting-stuck-86-a.html

Hello i have a L50-B-1P1 laptop and i`m experiencing a few problems after windows 10 upgrade
1 R7 video driver missing so no catalyst present therefore i have low frames and frezess in games
2 Microphone producing garbeld voice when recording
I know that the series is discontinued but there should be some kind of fix for the problems i`m experiencing atm.
I don`t want to downgrade to wind 8.1/7
What are your exact spec, Processor, RAM and OS type 32 bit / 64 bit
Depending on what it is you may be able to use the new AMD Crimson drivers instead. I have a L50D-C-13G and I abandoned the catalyst drivers for Crimson drivers and my machine is running great. I have an A10-8700P Carrizo R6 with windows 8.1 and it works great for me. The driver lists compatible hardware, read through it and see if your machine is supported.

Hi everyone, this is my first visit and post and I hope you can assist
where others have failed. I have tried to install Win 10
on two machines and neither of them would work, both telling me that the CPU was not
good enough or words to that effect.
PC1 has Intel Pent G3220 3.00 GHz Haswell chip.
PC2 has Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00 GHz.
Both of these are way over the required
minimum spec so I cannot understand why Win10 will not install.
Welcome to the forum. Its likely either your cpu cant handle PAE, NX and SSE2 or its not set in the bios
To test for PAE, NX, and SSE2, download a program called "CPU-Z" and run it. On the main window, look under the "Instructions" heading for SSE2, EM64T (which also indicates the processor supports PAE) and either VT-d or VT-x, which is required for NX support. If you have all 3, then you are good to go.
I have now decided to bite the bullet and go for the Win10 upgrade. Before I do I would like to know more about the procedure, Can anyone direct me to a good source of information on the subject.
What version of windows are you currently running
Make a back up of all your data
Download the ISO file and upgrade from this site
i am runing a toshiba satelite using windows 7. the laptop originally came with windows 8, i couldnt bear the change so i switched back to 7 and today i want to get a legit copy of windows 10 -- that will last for over 1 year -- installed after reinstalling windows 8 (my win 7 isn't licensed). after running "ProduKey" i found a "windows BIOS OEM key" that apparently belongs to the OEM win 8.
can i install 8.1 with my win 8 OEM product key?
can i upgrade directly from windows 8 to 10 or do i need to update from 8 to 8.1 and from there upgrade to 10?
can i use the retail win 8 istallation files with an OEM product key or do i need the toshiba OEM installation files?
thank you very much for any help!
No need to install windows 8 - just install windows 8.1 via ISO and then upgrade to windows 10 via ISO
windows 10 just needs to see the activation of windows 7 or windows 8.1 to activate itself..
Up until a few days ago I could view thumbnails/icons of actual PDF files while in Windows Explorer. Now I only get the Adobe logo icon. Other file thumbnails are working.
I tried a system restore back to before this started but it didn't correct the problem. Prior to that I tried changing the file association to another program and back again but that didn't work either. Any other ideas?
Windows 7 spoiled me-- I really liked being able to see what the file looked like before I had to go opening several to find the one I want. (When I'm creating document graphic designs I usually make three or four different trial versions which can get confusing when I am away from my work for a day or two!)
I tried Googling the problem and found some discussions on other forums but still haven't found a satisfactory solution.

You were all so helpful in getting me through my last Win10 experience that I decided to give it another go
I just finished upgrading my kids' PC from Win7 to Win10, and since the upgrade the system has been hard-freezing -- no responsiveness from mouse or keyboard, screen frozen in place.
I'd heard that there may be issues with USB drivers (since the motherboard is fairly old), so I reinstalled the latest from Gigabyte earlier today, but no dice.
Any advice would as always be appreciated! Thanks in advance,
I've been hesitant to upgrade any of my PCs from 7 to 10, because it is not a clean install.
I want to be able to upgrade, but from a clean install, so that I have the ability to revert back to a windows 7 capture of my system if I find 10 to be unsavory.
Is there a way to register my hardware or obtain a windows 10 license key, via an upgrade without having to go through the process of having 10 installed on top of my 7 system?
I have multiple ThinkCentre M78-10BR workstations that I am upgrading to Windows 10 Pro 64-bit from Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. Some upgrade properly without any problems. I now have at least two stations that are having graphics problems. I can't seem to find a driver that is compatiblen with the on-board adapter.I have tried installing Radeon HD 8370D drivers from Windows Update, Lenovo Support, and from AMD's site. In all cases the system BSOD until I remove what was installed. I do have M78-10BR that upgrade perfectly with driver 15.200.1036.0. I am at the point where I am downloading random x64 drivers from the Windows Update catalog hoping one will work. I have three computers in family that were given upgrades on the win7 family plan. One was just informed it was eligible for win10 upgrade. I think I made the mistake of custom install (for a clean install) instead of an upgrade and, related to other problems with windows update, I might have lost my activation on win7. Long story short, when I got to the point where win10 was installed and asking for a key I knew I had done a no no as, if I had done it correctly, I should not have been asked for a key. Of course I have no key but the win7 key and the install just sits there with no options but to input the key, which I don't have. What's my best course of action here?
thanks in advance
If you haven't already, you should be able to enter the Windows 7 product key to activate Windows 10 if it's for the same edition and language.
Thinkpad W540 will not upgrade to Win10 via Windows Update. Have also downloaded Media Creation Tool and Win10 iso file. All are 64-bit as is my processor and current Win8.1 Pro w/ Media Center. Have tried running MCT and iso as administrator with no success. I'm running out of time for a free upgrade! System has 8GB RAM and plenty of free space on hard drive. All 8.1 updates and patches are installed. All drivers are updated. Please help!

OOPS -- saw you tried this already. ------------------------------------Have you tried obtaining the upgrade directly from Microsoft via their Win10 Media Creation tool? You will be able to download an entire .ISO file to burn a CD or create a bootable USB stick: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 This works better, sometimes, than the Windows upgrade pestering message. Good luck!----------------------------------------- How are you fixed for disk space? The upgrade needs qute a bit of extra room ~ 5 - 10 GB, at least, to store previous machine state.

I downloaded the upgrade by means of the "Windows10UpgraderApp", it completed the initial check and the whole download. At the second restart the installation got stuck at 32%. Switching off the pc, the previous release was automatically restored in few minutes.
It's an almost powerful laptop. I have large amount of RAM and HD space available. The current version is 1511, build SO 10586.589

A "client" has a problem with WLM 2012 after upgrade/roll back to Win10 - W7.
Here the existing pop account can receive mails but no mails are sent via smtp.
Also creation of a new/other e-mail (Gmail or pop) account is not possible.
Reinstallation of WLM 2012 did was not successful.
Installation and configration of Mozilla Thunderbird, everything work very well.
My "client" was satisfied with this solution.
I have a collegue helper, who has a simular problem (W7); no send/reply;
did WLM recovery function, deleted "Mail.MSMessageStore"; uninstalled WLM2012 cleaned up
revo uninstaller also registry; reinstalled WLM2012; but no success.
Thunderbird worked perfect, but his client likes to use WLM.
What can be done to get WLM working again?
Hi Guy's I have a Win laptop and a Win desktop I like a lot of what I've read about Win although not all But I was hoping that the laptop would be offered it first It's a refurb That I only recently bought My intention was to install slide shows of my art work and use it to show potential customers Anyway I was hoping to install Win on that and put it through it's paces That way I could decide before upgrading my main PC Unfotunately it hasn't worked out that way Yesterday Win downloaded to my desktop PC It said click here to upgrade I was panicing and got a tad twitchy But was pacified when but wants I now! upgrade to 'Win10' to it time need decide, it went on to say - Expect a second prep of your device - Review the licence agreement - Choose when to upgrade Phew it was number 'Win10' I need time to decide, but it wants to upgrade now! that made me relax Remembering I'd read you can wait for almost a year before 'Win10' I need time to decide, but it wants to upgrade now! making up your mind So I pressed the 'OK let's continue' button Did then now I'm faced with no problem I thought but hereby lies the rub Choose a date and time when you want to install the upgrade These are the choices I get HELP
Hi Graphicool1 I'm pretty sure you can just close the window and it'll wait until you launch the process manually to upgrade.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/586656/win10-i-need-time-to-decide-but-it-wants-to-upgrade-now/
I have a friend with WIN7 64 bit just like me. He received a message about upgrading to WIN10. He clicked on the X at the top right. It downloaded the update but he did not install it. It keeps asking about installing the upgrade.
What can he do to remove the WIN10 upgrade download?
What can we do to permanently remove any request to upgrade. Neither of us are computer gurus. We need a step by step simple procedure to stop any updates or requests for WIN10.
We have no desire for WIN10. Thanks, Bob.
The simplest way is to use a tool that automates the change of settings required to prevent the forced downgrade to Windows 10. Download the Never10 utility and it will disable the Win10 download. Extensive documentation and explanations are on its site.http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/396921-disabling-win10-upgrade-win7-64-bit.html
I've a A70 ThinkCentre initialy with W7.
Since the update (almost compulsory) towards Windows 10, my explorer of files closes alone, approximately every 53 seconds... To describe a little more my "breakdown" after my tries of this evening: it is the process " explorer Windows " that is reset doubt approximately the 50 seconds. So closes the explorer, the configuration panel, etc. Everything closes at the same time. The desk becomes black some milliseconds then re-appears.It occurs permanently, even if the explorer is not opened, the desk resets...As if something made the " end of spot "...What's to be done?
Is the A70 compatible with W10?
Mod: edited title to add system type and clarify problem
Go to Solution.
The A70 is not on the list of Lenovo Win 10 supported systems. Your Intel processor is several generations before official Win 10 starts.
There are ways to prevent Win 10 reminders and unwanted automatic downloads, Google for them.
I upgraded from win 8.1 to win 10, now I can't turn windows firewall, Tried fixing permissions, still no good. What do I do first?

Which ones are ON and which ones are OFF?
My laptop was victim of a virus that destroyed some register files and even System Restore could not fix it. My only choice is to format the hdd and reset to the OS in the chip which is Win 8, but I had already upgraded to Win 10. How can I recover my Win 10 Key so I can reinstall and activate Win 10?
Thanks / Arturo
There is no free key. If your computer came with Windows 8.x, the key is in the bios. If you wish to install from the iso, do the install without activation, then once you get into the GUI, then do the activation and it will go through.http://www.tenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/62231-how-recover-win10-key-free-upgrade-8-1-a.html
I'm still on Win7, I noticed that their pop up window to install Win10 has changed, there is no option to select another date for the install, it were only ever 3 days ahead anyhow.
I'm wondering, is the free offer coming to an end then?
Looking through some of the past threads on here, I see that some have reverted back to their old OS after dabbling with Win10, I'm wondering if I should even bother/risk trying it to be honest?.....Although I dare say that I'll be forced to in the end.
The offer is for a year - July 2016 (it was released on 29th July 2015)

Is it possible to upgrade a C875-15G to Win10? Currently it's not on the list of supported laptops on the Toshiba website, but Win10 compatibility check does not encounter any issues.
Did somebody tried to upgrade such a laptop already?
I tried to upgrade in 2014 but that didnt work.
Some problems with the taskbar and cpu tied up continuously.
I had the same problems with a dell running on w7. Recently I upgraded the last one again and it runs well now.
So I am planning to upgrade the C875-15G again tot W10 again shortely.
Are there any reports from successful installation on the C875-15G?
Downloaded Win10 to my Win 8.1 desktop. Received following error messages upon attempted install finish:
"The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation"
Have un-installed all security and all non-essential drivers and programs.
I experience a very frequent BSODs. I've searched the inet for the symptom, everyone blames Alcohool 120%. I've never had it.
I attach the system information file with 50 minidumps. I would be thankful if you could help me to identify the reason for these BSODS.
Thanks in advance.

Like in the topic. Please help; after upgrading to Win 10 there is no keys-backlight after using the FN + Z combination. in bios (after upgrading) everything is fine; so when I turn backlight ON or OFF backlight runs out, but there is problem with Toshiba Funcktion Key driver I think.
I did the reinstalation of this driver, have others toshiba drivers for Win 10 installed (Eco, system driver etc.). Toshiba Funckction key runs for several seconds after system bots up, and is blocked (?) by something after jus several seconds. Weird and very annoying. The fun is that combination for screen brightness (FN + F6 or F7) and for volume up/down (FN + 3 / 4) runs perfectly vell. Backlight
I think the problem is connected with Toshiba Funcktion Key program.
Please help ! Portege is the top class of Toshiba laptops.
I decided to try and upgrade my HP Pavilion n sa laptop to Win from win The GET Windows quot Check Your PC quot report says that PC will work with Win There is nothing incompatible All Items are ticked I booted from a USB copy of the ISO created as says on not it. upgrade laptop HP I MS has my can't tested win10 by the Media Creation toolkit downloaded from MS and which upgrade my Desktop machine with no problems I accepted the License set the language and currency to UK and choose Upgrade to keep my files and Apps intact After a while of it checking my Laptop it showed a message quot The computer Started using the Windows Installtion media remove the media and restart windows so that it restarts normally then insert media and restart the upgrade quot Which I follow to the Letter then I get the message quot This PC can't run windows you can't MS says I can't upgrade my laptop as HP has not tested win10 on it. install windows on a USB Flash Drive using setup quot I had MS on my laptop for well over hours yesterday checking my PC meets minimum requirements and recreating Win images to update my machine They tried using other tools to create USB Flash drive images using MS says I can't upgrade my laptop as HP has not tested win10 on it. ISO burned to DVD and when they could not get it to work they say HP has not tested it with Win and to get them to do that and go back to MS On the HP website it says quot Note If you have a PC newer than August there is a good chance that your product can be upgraded Continue to the Microsoft Upgrade experience quot I bought the machine in December Has any one had the same problems or updated with no problems Where do I go now Will a clean install work or not Thanks Pete
I'll take a stab at this one..
From my experience with HP they do drop support for some of the products and you get stuck with the last OS that was installed on it.,. for example I had a nice desktop and it only would support Win7. When I tried to run Win8 on it .. well it would work fine but when I went to shut it down for the night and restart it that's when it would fail. Seems HP will not provide the updates to support new OS's. And this also applies to other OEM's.
Now having said all of that here is one option you have. Make sure you can make a system backup and backup your personal data. When that's done make sure you can restore the system and you're comfortable with the process.
At this point you could perform a clean instillation of 10 and see what happens. IF it fails to work properly just restore your PC to the previous settings with the backup you made.
... yes.. complicated but that's the best advice I can offer at the moment
And welcome to the forums
I have a strange issue where after a full shut down in Windows 10, the motherboard is still delivering power to my connected devices such as my headset, keyboard, mouse and monitors i.e. all the lights on these devices are still on, whereas previously in Win7 they would all turn off.
I did an in-place upgrade from Win7-Win10 and adjusted no motherboard BIOS settings.
I've looked through the Win10 power options and can;t see anything relating to keeping devices on after a shut down. I assume this is so USB devices like phones and tablets can charge from USB when the PC is off? However I don;t need this feature if that's the intention.
Any ideas? Is windows 10 (vs win7) sending a different command back to the MB on a shutdown?
MB: Asrock P67 Extreme 6
CPU: Intel 2600k
Some motherboards have a USB power feature even when the computer is switched on.
This sound like your issue. This can be adjusted in the BIOS settings.
Look in the BIOS for an option called EUP Turn it off.
Or maybe ErP Ready. Turn it on.
Edit: One more thought... when you installed the motherboard chipset drivers you may have installed a small program that allows for the charging of USB devices when the PC is off.
I downloaded the upgrade as instructed and when it reached the 100% mark, everything stopped. The download took me 5 hours! (I don't have a very good ISP speed in my area). The problem is, where is the download now? I've searched the 'downloads' file and I cannot seem to find it. Maybe it has been placed in a separate file of its own. Could you please tell me what the name of the file might be and where I may be able to find it.

Greetings, Win 7 upgrades to Win 10 can be problematic with no easy way back to Win 7 unless you have a good image and bootable rescue media. The safest way to upgrade is to clone your existing Win 7 install to a second HDD or SSD. Connect only the cloned HDD to your PC to do the upgrade. Carefully read this entire article by Ed Bott to learn what needs to be done, and the time invested, if you have to rebuild Windows 7. Win 10 may have the correct WLAN driver as well as all other drivers needed to run correctly or the upgrade could choke. You still have the original Win 7 install on the first HDD and can move on with your computing life. Hi: I have the 8200 Elite CMT (i7-2600, BIOS J01, v2.28) and had no issues upgrading to W10. I would suggest you upgrade from the link below and see if it bypasses the hardware check. Three days ago my Windows 7 computer upgraded itself (without my permission) to Windows 10. Mostly this hasn't mattered as I've quickly found how to fix or do things that have altered. However my sound system is now unusable because of echo/reverberation. I have checked that all drivers for the sound components are up to date (the Win10 install did this automatically it seems from the dates shown). I have attached screen-grab images of the System and Sound components descriptions. I would appreciate help on how to fix this.
I was getting 1920x1080 pixel on Win 7 until I upgraded to win10, where the max I get is 1366x768. I've exhausted my search online so thought I'd ask the group for help. Is there a particular driver I need to install that is not on the Dell site? Thank you.http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3519/t/19681684
Hi I already had some problems on my Windows -bit machine due to Windows being installed on a small SSD GB - mainly that IE wasn't working - but now after upgrading to Windows it has expanded to a lot more MS-programs I have a second SSD drive of GB installed too Excel takes a long time to start from the menu If I start it by double-clicking an Excel-file after a long time it says quot There was a problem sending the command to the program quot If Excel is already open there's no problem with problems Win10 MS. and upgrade small SSD MS-programs on now only it Win10 upgrade on small SSD now problems with MS-programs and only MS. opens the file fast Word hasn't got the same problem and opens files quickly Enabling or disabling HW acceleration had no effect Edge I can start but not get to open any webpage Nothing happens when entering an address And IE doens't start at all Firefox works fine Edge dies if I try to open IE through it Outlook says quot Could not install the custom actions The form cache file quot C FRMCACHE DAT quot is not valid Contact your administrator quot when I try to create a new email but the forms file is present at the location and security good Outlook otherwise it works though I did have security problems with not being allowed to send and receive emails The Store doesn't open Just shows a blank page OneDrive doesn't work at all All my non-MS apps and programs works ironically fine without any problems with the upgradehttp://www.tenforums.com/software-apps/61230-win10-upgrade-small-ssd-now-problems-ms-programs-only-ms.html
i have a couple laptops that both came with windows 8.1 that im going to be selling. both were upgraded to win10 during the free upgrade period and both are currently on anniversary edition. when i look at the activation page, it says "Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your microsoft account". naturally, i will reset windows before sale so does this mean the new owner will not be able to activate windows 10 since it wont be done with my acct? do i need to track down restore media for each and put win8 back on?
That's actually very interesting because historically and even when I had my stint on Windows 10, the license is tied to the machine, not the user. What I would do is reset those laptops and set them up with a local account and see if the activation status is an issue.http://forums.windowscentral.com/windows-10/445645-free-win10-upgrade-transferable-another-owner.html
I have my DVD unit not working. It appears as unit, it starts but it does access the disks I insert (It makes some noise as it works, but keep repeating please insert a disk.
I understand that in windows 8.1 dvd drivers were with among the chipset ones, so that it was enough re-installing them.
How to do the same in windows 10 system? Any idea?
Hi all. MS apparently decided to upgrade my wife's comp from Win7 to 10 sometime in the early morning hours yesterday. Been on the black upgrading screen ever since - the upgrade is going along, but it's only at 25% (copying files is at 84%) and it's been about 24 hours now. Comp is about 4 years old, built with current parts for that time period, don't have it's details handy right now.
I've been dealing/building comps for over 30 years, and I've NEVER seen an install/upgrade take this long. Couple of questions:
What could be causing it to take so long?
Can I stop the upgrade without losing Win7 and her stuff, and how?
Thanks in advance!
