External hard disk not detected in My Computer and in Disk Management

Q: External hard disk not detected in My Computer and in Disk Management

I have a problem regarding my external Toshiba hard disk 500 GB where it can?t be detected in my computer and also disk management. I have formatted the external HD since I was asked to format it when an error popped up.
So I formatted it and after the formatting completed, I tried to connect the hard disk to my Windows Win 7 laptop. When I connect it to the laptop, it can?t be detected and yet the hard disk is blinking with its white light like it used to when it is connected to the laptop. I tried the disk management thingy, but it can?t detect my hard disk. I tried in other laptops but the result is same
What can I do to make it better? Please help me.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

First off, how old is your Toshiba external HDD? Also, when it starts to spin up, do you hear any sort of clicking or whining noise?

If you hear any noises that sound off, it's possible your external HDD is failing.

When you formatted it, what file system did you use to do so? Because sometimes even if Windows can't detect it, I have had success with booting with a Ubuntu Live CD, and then connecting the external HDD in order to format it that way. It all has to do with how Windows formats HDD's and how Ubuntu and other Linux systems do.

If you can I recommend downloading Ubuntu onto a CD and boot to it on one of your computers, in the Live CD mode, so it doesn't install anything. Once its loaded, plug in the Toshiba and try to format it as NTFS (this is important, because Ubuntu doesn't use it as a native file system, so you need to make sure that NTFS is selected on the format window, not EXT4 or the other types of Linux OS File Systems)

If it doesn't work, post back here, and I will see if I can help you some more. Also feel free to PM me if you have any other issues.

I have had the same Toshiba external hard drive for years and have never had any problems plugging and using from any machine, mac or pc. I recently had to reformat my hard drives and re-install windows 7, and ever since I have been unable to access my external from this machine. It still works fine on my laptop, and when I plug it in to my tower, it still recognizes that "External USB 3.0" has been plugged in and downloads the drivers. However, the drive appears neither under my computer nor disk management, nor diskpart -> list volume. It does show up in my device manager as USB mass storage but uninstalling the drivers and plugging it back in does nothing. Is there anything I can try before moving all my files off and formatting the drive, and will that even help? Thanks for reading.

A:No hard drives detected in Disk Management but C drive is in My Computer. ?

Can you post a screenshot from Disk Managment?

Logically...any connected drive should always appear in two places...the BIOS and Disk Management.

The only possible reason that I can think where this might not if two drives are assigned the same letter by Windows, only one can be reflected.

As for C: being reflected in Windows/My Compter...any version booted into appears as the C: drive, as any person who does multiboots will tell you. The C: drive is nothing but a designation for the O/S partition/drive booted into.

As for your XP Pro situation...there is no way around the requirement for the system files for the applicable O/S installed. XP Home is not Pro and vice versa.

USB drives dont show in BIOS.

The USB adaptor may be USB 2 and your USB may be usb1 and as such is having trouble seeing the drive.

Or your USB sockets or drivers are faulty, try another USB device in them

I have an external hard disk which got corrupted. When i connect the disk through USB it shows as an unknown device in the disk management with no option to format.

In My computer the device is showing as H: drive but unable to access it. It asks if i want to format or not but when i go for format it does not do it. I want to erase the disk completely as of now. What should i do??

I tried to load it from linux but there it shows as Device Error. Disk Failure is Imminent.

Can something be done or is it a hardware failure.

A:External Hard disk showing as RAW in disk management

Sounds like the drive is failing or the circuitry in the enclosure is faulty.

I would first remove the drive from the enclosure and hook it up as a slave to a desktop PC. See if you can then access it. If you can, then post back for further instructions with the version of your OS.

The Seagate Momentus 5400.6 hard drive I'm using is from my old laptop it has 4 disks.
After I put it in the (IT-CEO IT-700) enclosure, and connect it to my new laptop it does not show up in 'My Cumputer' and 'Disk Management', but displays in the 'device and printer' section of control pannel.
I also can't eject the hard drive, even when I'm not doing anything to it, the (IT-CEO IT-700) enclusre's blue signal light just keeps flashing for a while then goes off for a sec, then resume flashing again.
My laptop also keeps trying to install the hard drive.

I tried reinstall the hard drive's driver, but that did not solve the problem.

Please Help.

I have a Western Digital (WD) 250gb external hard drive and run Windows XP on my Asus Eeepc laptop.

One day I pulled my external hard drive straight out of my computer (didn't use "safely remove hardware"). From now on it isnt displayed in my computer, and it doesnt appear in disk management either. When I open device manager and then open my WD SES Device, it tells me the device is working properly. I have tried updating the driver and uninstalling it, but everytime I plug it in reinstalls itself and tells me it is working fine.

I am not a computer guy. I have read other forums and none have a solution for me. Does anybody know how to access my external hard drive? (please write responses in simple language with simple steps I can follow)

I've been having this problem for a few months now. I recently built my own computer, having been on a lap top for a couple of years, and found my old external hard drive. I plugged it in to the new computer, and it said something about needing to be formatted, which I promptly did due to nothing of importance being on it. I went to sleep, and woke up to see that it couldn't be formatted.

This is where my issue begins. It no longer appears in Computer, or Disk Management. Disk Management won't even load if I have the drive plugged in. There seems to be no way at all to format the drive, since Computer, and Disk Management both don't load when the drive is plugged in. Any help?

I have a Simple Tech Pininfarina 320 GB external hard drive that is no longer recognized by two different PCs, even under disk management. When plugged into the USB, the PCs do try to install the driver, but fails. It is recognized under Devices and Printers as Unspecified and with the information Model-Simple Drive, Category - Unknown, and Status-Software is installing for this drive. The troubleshooter searches for a driver, but does not find one. Basically I get the information that "There is a problem wiht the driver for USB Mass Storage Device. Reinstalling the driver might fix this problem." But I cannot find a driver for this hard drive.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance!

A:External hard drive not recognized in Disk Management

The system is telling you that there is a problem with a USB driver, check in the Device Manager for any yellow warnings. Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers you will see a driver for USB Mass Storage Devices, right click and uninstall it then reboot, Windows should reinstall it, or go to the motherboard's manufacturer's site and download and install the latest chipset drivers..

There are two other possibilities, the hard drive has failed or the circuitry in the enclosure has develpoed a fault.

Remove the hard drive from the enclosure and (if you have access to one) hook it up to the internal connections of a dektop PC. Or, purchase a USB Hard Drive Adapter (about ?10) from a computer store or eBay and then plug it into the USB connection on any computer and see if you can then access the drive.

I assume that if you start without the 1TB HD that everything works normally.

If this is true, when you connect the 1TB HD, do you get any indication that you have added new hardware? You should.

Is your connection to the 1TB HD via USB?

Never mind. One of your images shows that the Seagate is recognized. From that, I conclude that the USB interface is good

Hey everyone,
I just purchased a new external hard drive for my laptop. I have a Sony vaio, and the hard drive I bought is a Micronet Platinum XL 500gb. I turned it on and it didn't show up in My computer so I went into the disk management and noticed it was not activated. I activated it and then still nothing.

That was obvious because the drive had not been formatted. So I clicked create new partition and started formatting it. All was fine, it was late so I went to bed, got up in the morning to see how it completed and it said that the format was NOT successful. Now it won't show up in My Computer, nor will it show up in Disk Management. Should I just create a WIN98 bootdisk and format it from DOS, or is there something else I can do?

A:External hard drive not showing up in Disk Management

If it won't show up, I don't see how you can format it in DOS.

Anyway, check out Device Manager and tell us more.

Other suggestions:

1. Test your drive on another pc
2. Check your bios settings

good luck

Try it on another machine. It sounds like the drive is having some problem. Run chkdsk /r on it in the other machine and check for bad sectors.

Hopefully, the data was backed up recently. External drives are the most unreliable of all storage media. If not, you better make a fresh backup in case something is wrong with the drive.

I had my external hard disk connected to my laptop, and the wire accidentally came out for a second. But right away, it reconnected to my laptop. However, rather than working normally, my computer detected it as a new drive. And then I don't know what happened but it wouldn't be detected at all.
The light on the hard disk is on, so I know it's not an issue with the power. But I don't think it's being detected anywhere on my computer because no pop-up or anything appears to install a new hardware. Nor is the drive visible in My Computer.
I tried reinstalling but to no avail. I also tried disconnecting and reconnecting the hard disk a number of times. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've had my Acer Aspire 5310 laptop for a few months now with Windows Vista. I have an 80GB hard drive, partitioned into two drives as default.

Until now I've never noticed that the numbers didn't add up. I know when you buy and 80GB hard drive, it should actually show up as less due to bits and bytes and what not (80GB=74GB roughly) but I found something fishy in Disk Management. There is a drive showing up with no letter assigned to it which is nearly 10GB in size and after doing the math it accounts for the 10GB i lack after adding my two 32GB hard drives together.

So I have 2 x 32GB drives plus this weird drive which is 10.

I have attached the screenshot of disk management.

If anyone knows what is going on here I would very much appreciate it!

A:Problem with Vista Disk Management/Being robbed of hard disk space!

has this just recently appeared? This is a longshot, but if you have Kaspersky lap installed then that could be the problem. It autologs roughly 10 gigs of data without your permission, it is easy to get rid of, but annoying none the less.
However this doesn't seem to likely as what seems to have happened here is that you have accidently split one of your hard drives into two. Either that or a program like deamon tools has created a virtual drive. Do you use either deamon tools or alcohol 120?

A:Seagate external hard disk not detected in front panel USB port

Well not exactly knowing what type of a computer we are talking about here, I can only say, that what your are reporting is completely normal. Most computers I've ever touched have passive styled USB ports on the front of the computer, and aggressive USB ports off the back that can handle just about anything you can hook up to it.

So stop trying to connect that external hard drive off the front, not enough power and not enough data exchange rates. I would recommend that if you have all your USB ports off the back of the computer taken, I would start thinking seriously about an "amplified" 4 port USB HUB. Remember the HUB your looking for has it's own power source, and does not relying on the computer at all for it's power.

The following one is a good one, a friend of mine got her's about a month ago and has not yet reported any problems.

Hope this all helps....

A:Hard drive not recogized in my computer or disk management

Timemachine shouldn't automatically synchronise to the hard drive, unless told to do so. Also, in order for time machine to function on that drive, it requires it to be formatted in the MacOSX native filesystem.

In case your not aware, Timemachine is Apple's backup software, designed to backup Apple systems.

If the data on the hard disk is not of any consequence (e.g. it contains no essential data), it can be formatted as NTFS, which will then be read by Windows. Unless it has been formatted as a Mac OSX partition it should be read natively anyway. In other words, it should be NTFS still.

Lets go back to basics:

1. If it's an internal hard drive, does BIOS identify the hard disk?
2. Your positive disk management doesn't identify the hard disk?

You could use a bootable partition editor like GpartED to boot from the DVD drive and inspect all your connected partitions.

You could also boot from a Linux Live distribution like Ubuntu as well, which would enable you to check your connected partitions/drives.

The fact Windows is refusing to identify that hard disk is leading me to suspect its been re-formatted as a Mac OSX filesystem and as such can't be read from Windows. If its been re-formatted your data is already lost, in which case just formatting it will resolve your problem.

Hi chinu89,

As far as the icons go, the following tutorial covers the procedure to restore both the icons you mentioned: Desktop Icons.

Do your drives show up in Windows Explorer?

Please attach a screenshot of Disk Management so we can see what it looks like as things currently exist. It will be easier than asking a dozen questions about what is or isn't there. We can then proceed from there.

Also, please update and run a full AV scan with your security software. Also, download, install, update, and run a full scan with Malwarebytes: This type of problem can be caused by malware - so let's rule that out.

I hope this helps.

Thanks and good luck!

hello I need some help with a hard drive I just put into my system is this is the wrong part of the forum please let me know

I recently installed Vista with on this machine with this new HD deatched though it had previously been used in this computer running xp.

It is a IDE hard drive and although device manager recognizes it as a disk drive I cannot get windows explorer or disk management to notice it. It has a ntfs format.

Thanks please let me know any additional info I should post. my other drive is SATA drive

A:2nd HD (IDE) not detected by disk management

Hi Usurperr, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It sounds like you may not have you BIOS setup properly for the drive. Consult with your motherboard manual for this to help you also. You will need to check in BIOS to make sure that the port you plugged the new IDE hard drive into on the motherboard is set for IDE in the BIOS (CMOS or Integrated Peripherals) settings and not for SATA or RAID.

Also, double check you IDE ribbon cable and power connections to make that they are secure and fully connected.

This could be any issue causing your problem , software , usb drive may have errors on it / or ?
Imaging your 150 Gig via Usb will take time { Mine are about 40-50 Gig } Operating System And Programs Only.
I personally partition my main Drive eg: c:\ and d:\ and so only the operating system is on C;\
Then use the D;\ to store your personal files. , this way your c:\ wont keep growing in size as you are storing everything there.
If you cant actually do anything with the computer because of warranties as you stated "just serviced" , ask them why you cant Image Drive.
1/ Try another hard drive to backup to.{ Usb will always be slower } than directly connected to Mobo.
2/ Use Mini Tool Partition Wizard [ Free } to create another partition -
3/ Remove all Temp Files / Restore Points / etc with Ccleaner { Free ] -
this will reduce C:\ size to minimal size { defrag drive also }.
4/ Use any program to Image C:\ { I use Acronis }. to the D:\ Backup Folder.
5/ Then copy the image to any portable drive or external if need be.
6/ Use the D:\ for your personal files and folders as a backup also.
Sometimes you have to do things yourself - than rely on Service Centres and Costs.
If you run a Business then you claim all your costs incurred.
All this will take time but you will have backups and feel at ease.

hi all,

i would like to ask you a very basic question:

What is the difference between an external hard disk and an internal hard disk mounted on external enclosure?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure risky in terms of loosing the data?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure reliable to use?

kindly let me know as there is a vast difference in the price of these hard disks. The external hard disk is costing more and if i use internal hard disk in external enclosure price is very much reduced.

my only concern about using internal hard disk in external enclosure is the reliability.

thanks in advance,

I have run into a problem that has been causing me quite a bit of headache as of late. A week ago, my WD Elements External Hard Disk is not displaying under hard disk drives, but does display under Devices and Printers. This is what it shows under computer management:

I have tried to initialize the disk using MBR and GPT options but failed receiving I/O Disk Error.

Please help, thank you.

Couple of hours ago my Windows 7 could not recognize my external USB hard disk (Maxtor Basic). It came up on Disk Management and Device Manager but not on My Computer. However I fixed it (by deleting its line off regedit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices, plugging out the ext. HD and plugging back in). Windows automatically installed the drivers and I could access the drive.

But now Windows shows my Maxtor as a fixed disk drive, instead of "devices with removable storage". I still have the option to "Safely remove hardware and eject media" from taskbar, however I rather have Windows treating it as a Removable USB Storage so that the disk can sleep when not in use. I am pretty sure it has something to do with regedit, so any help would be appreciated.

A:USB external hard disk shows up as internal fixed disk

Welcome to Windows 7 Support Forums, Sactyr.
A word of caution! Its never a good idea to alter your register,
IMHO please review your device manager and check your devices for your disk drives, check for any warnings in the driver area.
I'm attaching my screenshot for comparison as I have a similar configuration.

If I am saving a backup to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 USB external hard disk

1. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 3.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

2. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 2.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

A:Speed of saving to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 external disk?

There's no definitive answer, it would all depend on which internal drives you had (SSD/HDD, SATA 6GB, SATA 3GB) and which external drives you had and their relative transfer speeds. It's all just guesswork without that info.

So i have been browsing for a few hours now trying to get this issue fixed but I have had no luck!

I have a Seagate 320gb external hardrive. I have had it for a few months now and has worked great every single time I used it. Now suddenly it is no longer recognized. (Windows 7)

I have tried doing a few things which i found throughout other topics but ran into a few problems.

The HD is not shown in My Computer nor does it show in Disk Management.
So I try it on a Vista machine and same results. It is not recognized anywhere not even in Device Manager.

I can hear the HD spin and the green light does turn on however it used to flash consistently and now just flashes once and then remains lit.

If anyone can give me some insight it would be much appreciated.

The hard disk gets ON and the LED on the hard disk blinks like normal.

Please do suggest any possible solutions ..

And also suggest some data recovery software that works good.

A:My computer hangs when I connect external hard disk?

Does the disk have an external power source, or is it just powered through USB?

Also, have you tried turning the laptop off, connecting the drive, and then turning the laptop on?

If the above does not work, test it on another computer, both with plugging it in while the computer is on, and if that does not work, plugging it in while off and turning it on.

I am experiencing problems as I try to extend dr O:\ 65GB of a portable HD to use all the unallocated space (9.77 GB) on my Disk 2.
Disk 2 also has dr M:\ @ 35GB.

My problem is the error message as seen in attachment #2.

I then made a Simple Volume and tried to extend O:\ but "extend" was grayed out and not offered. I then returned the 9.77 GB to an unallocated state. Everything is backed up so losing any data is not a likely risk.

I do not know what to do in Win and before I try to use cmd prompt I wanted to ask for advice.
I assume if I have to use cmd I will extend and the unallocated space will automatically be used up, correct?

The PC Magazine Vista book I have offers no help. The terminology is confusing me.

Any help is appreciated.
Regards, Mark..

A:external hd disk management extend problem

Hi Mark989. Welcome to BleepingComputer.Vista is not as good as Win7 for adjusting partitions so I would be inclined to use something like Partition Wizard which I have used successfully in the past.. As you are not booting from this drive, you can safely ignore the warning. In your case, what I would do is 1. Remove the new Drive N:. 2. Extend the M: drive into the spare space. 3. Shrink the M: drive into right hand side, leaving the unallocated space next to the O: drive, and then 4. Extend your O: drive.Do each of these tasks one at a time and reboot between each task. luck. Let us know how you get on.

Have external SCSI 3TB RAID - need to get it properly configured in Disk Management to actually show up in "My Computer" as connected drive. Running Win2K Pro OS. RAID contains 8 - 500GB drives, and has been initialized. Disk management shows as: Disk 1 Dynamic 2047.99GB Online and Disk 2 Dynamic 1209.22GB Online, but both are Unallocated. (I changed them to Dynamic from Basic - was that right?)I want them set as RAID-5, but am not computer tech and don't know where to go from here and don't want to mess it up. Please advise!

A:Set RAID 5 external SCSI in Disk Management

To use RAID 5 on Windows 2000 Pro you will need a separate RAID controller. Do you have this? Windows 2000 Pro does not support software RAID 5. To implement software RAID 5 you would need a server OS.

A:External HD Doesn't Show in Disk Management

I just discovered something. After you utilize "safely remove hardware" before disconnecting the HD, the next time you connect it it does not power up (the power light is on but you can't feel the disk spinning) until you hook up to the usb port).

Previously, I had not been using "safely remove hardware" at all so I'm guessing the disk was running when conneting to the usb and that's when it didn't work right. But when power is not running when you plug the cable into usb (and it wasn't just a moment ago) then eveything is normal (as it is right now).

At least I'm going to go on that assumption until proven wrong and you can consider this thread solved.

A:External HDD corrupting? Cannot view in Explorer or Disk Management

A problem I see in the picture is that it mentions "the type of file system is FAT32". The size of the drive is too large for FAT32 so would have to be formatted as NTFS but doing so will delete any files on it.

Hi All,

I've recently ran into an almost identical problem that was described (but not resolved) in this thread.

In my case, the drive worked perfectly with my system and only recently stopped appearing in My Computer. Also, my drive is still visible and accessible on Windows XP but is not visible on my Windows 7.

I'd be grateful for any useful advice how to restore the functionlity of this drive on Windows 7.

Please let me know if you require any additional information to help resolve this issue.

Thank you!

A:Unable to initialize external HDD in Disk Management due to I/O error

Hello, tommythecat.
Is the external drive used much? Is it aging? Damaged (from moisture, shock [dropping] or misuse)?
If you can, back-up all the data to another HDD.
Connect the problematic HDD to the troublesome PC.
Open an administrative command prompt > type diskpart > type list disk.
Is the drive listed?

Cheers - Happy Holidays.

I bought a brand new U12-43837 Ultra 500GB external hard drive but as soon as I hook it up to the computer, the computer recognizes the drive, installs the driver, makes the hardware insert sound, but the drive does not appear in My Computer, nor does it appear in Disk Management. A few threads on here say to do certain things with the drive in Disk Management i.e. change drive letter, but the drive doesn't even show up in Disk Management so I cannot do that. Where do I go from here?

A:brand new external drive not showing up (not even in disk management!)

Hi all, I am hoping someone would be able to help me out on this problem. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Windows detects my external HDD but doesn't show up in My Computer. Drive is detected in Disk Management, indicated as "not initialized". When I try to initialize the drive, it gives me the following error,

"The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

What I've tried doing:Do a clean instll of windows - Don't work
Uninstall external HDD driver, turned off power, turn it back on again, reinstalled driver - don't work
Tested the same external HDD on another Windows 7 system - No problems, detected and able to access
Tried plugging on different ports - Don't work

After hours of searching through the web and reading forums, I realized that this is quite a commonly faced issue. Thank you.

I got new Desktop recently, Lenovo K450e, and when I went to plug in my external HD, Seagate 500GB, it didn't show up in either My Computer or Disk Management and there are no exclamation points next to the drivers suggesting that I would need a driver update. I plugged it into other ports on my computer with no luck but when I plug it into my laptop it works fine. I have read so many different forums with no luck. My computer is a Windows 8.1 intel core I7 processer.

Thank you

Windows XP sp2 wont boot from hard disk.

After much to do turns out my computer doesnt recognise the hard disk.

I have a seagate 500Gb SATA hard drive, its about a year old, the computer doesnt get hot in the slightest and it shouldnt be dead. I checked the wiring, as far as i can see, its all fine.

only conclusion i come to is that my hard disk is kaput which it shouldnt be. Can anyone give me any other possible solutions to try out before i cry and/or spend money on a new one? theres a lot of data on it i dont want to lose.

If not, ill plug it in to another computer to check, i havent done that yet because it will take me hours - i can only unscrew the hard drive from one side without rearranging the room.

A:Hard disk boot failure -> computer won't recognise hard disk

Is your Seagate the 7200.11 series?

We've been seeing a lot of harddrive issues layely that has nothing to do with the drive itself but bad SATA cables aas the cause. Do you have another one you can switch out?

When you say the computer doesn't recognize it we're talking the BIOS here, correct?

Another suggestion is what you have already suggested but I would "slave" it in antother system and see if you can access it that way.

Yesterday, I started a download and kept the pc on with my Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex External HDD 1TB plugged in. After I woke up I realized that there was a power cut and the computer went off unexpectadly (I had no UPS or any backup system). And, I found that my Ext HDD was not seen in my computer anymore (It was working perfectly until before I went to bed).
In device manager, under 'Disks' it shows 'GoFlex Hard Disk', but in BIOS or Disk Manager there is no sign of this HDD.

I really need the data in the HDD badly. Please help me recover it.
P.S. I read somewhere that keeping the HDD in freezer might help and give a little more time. Is that true? Worth the risk?

A:External HDD gets detected in Device Manager but not Disk Manager or seen in 'My Computer'

Power outage probably killed something in the enclosure or its PSU. The drive in the enclosure is probably fine. I would remove the drive from the enclosure and put it in a dock or install it in a desktop computer before considering freezing it. Freezing is usually reserved for click of death drives, and a last ditch effort.

I have a 2,5" 500GB external hard-drive with a single partition (NTFS).
I can see it in the disk management utility (see attached screenshot) but it doesn't have a drive letter nor can't I assign one.

Attached to another PC running Windows XP it says "unknown partition" but also error-free and NTFS.

The problem could have been triggered by unplugging the harddrive without securely removing it.

how about putting it into slave and then you can use it to recover all files that have not been corrupted by the bad sectors. you can also get your HDD tables by formatting it when it's slave...

although its not clear why you didnt bother replacing the damaged boot file with the install disc, its only one or two files...and if your lazy like me put the install disc in and do a recovery install, it looks like a normal install but it replaces all the original files like bootloader and other things that i cant think of right now...

A:Can't format hard-disk nor do partition when using boot disk. Hard-disk failure

It sounds like it might be the bootable CD you've created is not picking up the HDD's/partitions.
To eliminate this as a posibility travel to bootdisk and grab the WinME bootdisk and boot from there. If it picks up the HDD you can FDISK and Format from there.
The other option is to boot using the XP CD and let it handle the formatting/partitioning duties...

If you are OK with data loss on disk 0 you can do the following,
diskpart> sel dis 0
diskpart> clean
diskpart> conv dyn
This would reactivate your disk.
Invalid occurs due to many reasons like on spanned volume,
suppose few sectors have gone bad. So you are going to lose that data and as such disk becomes invalid.

Hello, I've just gotten a new TB hard drive, installed it, and tried to partition it. I opened up the Windows Disk Management program and initialized the drive. Then I went to create a new partition (or whatever that process is called). I went through the wizard, selected how much storage I wanted on it (all of it) selected the letter drive it would be, and named it. Anyways, the program has decided to stop responding, and so I've been sitting here in 30 minutes of hope, but alas nothing has changed. I've already tried this, but the program stopped responding, so I had to stop it and that created a whole new slew of issues, and it took a while to start my computer up properly again. Anyways, what can I do? Should I close the partition program and download a third party one to format and partition the drive?

Thanks for any help!

Do you hear the drive spinning? Any noticeable ticking sounds?

I'm assuming based on your post that this is an external drive, if you take the drive to just about any service shop, they should be able to pop it out of the enclosure and into a sled to check the possibility that the enclosure itself is having problems. If that's not the case, I'd probably label it a bad drive. Happens a lot, head to western digital's website with the number of the drive to check your warranty status.

I purchased a GB drive about a year and a half ago to Show in Doesn't Hard Management Drive Disk hold my backups for my main GB drive Just about everytime I have to reboot my PC the GB does not show in Computer I them boot again and it shows and everything is fine I have attempted to sort this out but no luck yet Today I had to reboot and the GB did not show I have rebooted about four times but nothing I went into the Bios and did not see anything strange The shows up as it should The only unusual thing I see in the setup is that my main drive with the C and D partitions is Hard Drive Doesn't Show in Disk Management listed as drive while the GB with my backups is listed as drive I believe the reverse is the preferred but don't know if it really matters Here is my Disk Management and a prompt that says I must initialize it The two partitions on the GB are primary if that makes a difference and the prompt refers to Logical Any help is appreciated as to why the GB is not showing Thanks I just found out how to initialize the disk but it looks like I will lose my backups Not a big deal but I want this to not occur again Does it sound like a bad disk that might be causing this

A:Hard Drive Doesn't Show in Disk Management

Normally, one would expect to see the Windows drive on Sata 0, but I don't think it really matters that it's not.

Initializing the drive means it's asking for it to be partitioned and formatted, but the puzzling thing is why did it lose its partition in the first place?

Was the partition on Drive 0 a logical partition?

I'm off to do some investigating.

I'm back, you may find this of use:

I've a full system backup and 139 GBs of free disk space, but Disk Management won't allow me to create a new partition to restore the image because I don't have any unallocated disk space. Is my backup image useless?

A:No unallocated disk space in Disk Management and can't create new partition.

A:Disk Management - Online/Offline function/Dual Disk OS

You can go to Disk management and remove the drive letter for "D".
