Quick question about XP Home laptop

Q: Quick question about XP Home laptop

A friend of mine is taking a class & she needs to know how to disable an XP wireless laptop? Can she do such with the Task Manager?
Evidently the other students will have to fix it once they're disabled.
If I get more info from her, I'll add it. TIA.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Quick question about XP Home laptop

Disable the laptop???
Or disable the wireless?
For the later, one easy approach is in the Control Panel... Network Settings...
you can disable your Lan, Wireless, Firewire, all right there.

Another approach is to Right Click on My Computer,
Select Properties, the select the Hardware Tab, find the Wireless Network adapter and disable it there.

There are other things that could be done, but I am hesitant to mention them, lest this is really in the realm of a malicious prank. There are reasons to sometimes disable the wireless as I have mentioned above... but not usually by other methods.

I've been looking into this Dell Inspiron Laptop with Intel? Pentium? Processor
If you have any opinions or info on this laptop, please let me know!

Anyway, it comes with windows 7 home premium, and I was wondering, does that have the compatibility mode?
because in the comparison on the Windows 7 website, It says it doesn't have the feature,
"Run many Windows XP productivity programs in Windows XP Mode."
But Im not completely sure if that means that it wont have the compatibility mode

A:Quick question about windows 7 Home premium

It has compatibility mode (as in run this program in Windows Vista Mode or Windows XP Mode)

What it doesn't have is stated above...the Virtual XP Mode where you have a full copy of XP running subsequently with your 7 Home Premium

Is it normal for it to take a while to connect from one computer to another (connected through router, both XP), and almost freeze up? But once connected, the speed is fine. Is this normal or is there something off?

A:Quick question about home networking speed

If you're talking about the 30 second pause when you first browse to a computer in Network Places, that's an issue that comes up with XP at times.

Delete the following key from the Registry (after saving)

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace\{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

Apparently Windows spends ages looking for "scheduled tasks" on other computers when you browse them thru' Network Neighborhood.

There are other causes for the delays, but this fixes it for me in many cases.

I purchased a Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade in 2009 in Fort Myers Fl. I returned home installed it and used it for several months but the PC failed and was returned to Costco where it was sent back to the manufacturer for refurbishing.

My question is am I able to re-use the Windows upgrade on another PC?

Thank you in advance.

I bought a Laptop from BestBuy around months ago It s a Gateway Not sure of the model number off my head Since day there is a very annoying fan type of sound when it s used I figured it was just a bad design flaw from Gateway I mean there is no way you would use this machine in any type of board room meeting due to Laptop Question Quick the sound being so loud and annoying they would probably ask you to turn the freak n thing off Now the night at home which is where it stays I used it for hours My wife asked me why the laptop wasn t making that quot grinding quot noise I told her quot Ya know Laptop Quick Question your right it hasn t quot I figured that maybe something was in a bind and finally freed up and the noise was gone Last night it started again I ve spoken with Gateway customer support and all I ever get from them via e-mail is quot All of our equipement Laptop Quick Question is tested before being shipped out quot crap I ve never spoken with one on the phone and let them listen to it I actually had a DSL tech on the phone the other night and he asked me what that noise was OK my question Do you think there is actually something wrong with the hardware or a bad design flaw on the machine I m wondering if BestBuy will give me any support on it as well after they hear it Suggestions nbsp

A:Laptop Quick Question

It definitely shouldn't be making a "grinding" noise. When the fan is on you should be hearing a "whoosh". But laptop vendors are very dodgy in answering questions about when you should or should not hear the fan, in my experience. Some will tell you that it's normal for the fan to be on just about any time.

I have a Dell laptop -- and the only time I ever hear the fan is when I boot intot the "Recovery Console" which does not load Windows at all. Very odd.

You can try monitoring the temperatures with an application like Speed Fan (which may actually give you some control over it).

http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

Or just use PC Wizard, which is a comprehensive System Information Utility:

http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php

If it is really making a "grinding" noise I would take back to Best Buy and let them listen to it.

I have an inspiron 2650 and need more ram. This site: http://www.1stchoicememory.com/catalog/configurator.asp?b=Dell&m=39400&p=C394001492

says that the ram it uses that works with a 2650 is DDR SO-DIMM PC2100 333MHz. But this site:http://www.memorystock.com/memory/DellInspiron2650Series.html says that it is 266MHz. does the speed matter, or is one of these incompatible?

Is there any reason, running a Dell E1505 laptop that is less than 2.5 years old, that I couldn't install more than 2 1gb 667mhz ram, I went through the upgrade helper thing on dell and the highest it listed was 2 1gb chips and I was curious if I could get 2 2gb chips. I have 2 512mb chips now.

A:Laptop Ram quick question

Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-4200 or DDR2 PC2-5300 (if they are all the same) with a maximum of 1GB per slot* for a total of 2,048 MB.

*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.

You definitely cannot do what you described. It may not work at all... probably will not boot, and could even damage the motherboard... though usually it just refuses to work.

I am purchasing a laptop and would like to know what is the difference between "14.1XGA" and "14.1SXGA+" display.
Thanks

A:very quick laptop question, Urgent

The difference is the screen resolution, the number of dots the screen uses to make up the display. Sxga+ is higher. The higher the resolution, the more stuff you can fit on your screen.

just got a pcg-z1wamp sony vaio with a 512 RAM and I have an HP DV9000 with a broken motherboard.

I wonder if I could take the HP's 1gig memory and slap it in the vaio? would that work?

on a similar note, what can else can I salvage from the HP? probably not the hard disk right?

A:quick laptop memory question

From what I found, the Sony maxes out at 1 GB RAM. If the HP has 2 x 512 MB DIMMs, you may be able to add one. You've only got one slot available for extra memory.

You may be able to hang on to the HDD as a spare. You cannot have two running internally, though you can get a case for external use via USB.

Hi,

I have a fairly old Compaq Armada M700 laptop which does the job except its slow, it only has 2 sticks of 64Mb RAM

I read I can upgrade to 2 sticks of 256Mb which I would like to do, but the sticks currently in the laptop are PC100, all I seem able to find now is PC133 on the net

Will PC133 work? There is also some installed RAM so I don't want a conflict.

Help appreciated before I spend $$ stupidly

So, I bought this laptop with Vista Home Premium on it a couple years ago I think, it was a graduation gift so idk), but it only had 1gb of RAM, why they did that is beyond me, anyways, I found the type of RAM I need to buy, but my question is would it even support 2 sticks of 2gb RAM or no? I can't find anything on the model of the laptop so I'm not sure.

It's an HP dv6000 series laptop, 2 memory slots with 512mb each slot. I'm thinking of getting 2 2gb sticks for it and using Vista Ultimate x64. Will that work or is over 2gb of memory unsupported for my laptop?

I have a client that wants VPN access to his LAN but absolutely insists that I not change the OS on his "server". I know I'm grasping at straws here, but are there any tweaks, registry edits, etc. that would somehow enable the VPN service on XP Home installations? Hello I have one weird problem one that I tired to fix with a clean install but the problem still exists Whenever I try to install games or software it will either give me quot Error quot or it will tell me that quot The Data on the CD does not match the Data in the setup file quot The last message popped up on the game quot Spore quot As I said before this is a brand new install and ALL of the drivers are up-to-date Is the Hard drive going or is my XP CD gone bad ADDED DETAILS This is the third time I had to reformat my hard drive because of an error on the hard drive all three I had nothing to do with they just corrupted on their own This problem has me at a loss I've never experience Quick question? anything like it before Quick question? I've fixed a lot of computers in my time but never had more problems crop up until the HDD corrupted the very first time BTW My XP CD is one that I had to burn off my computer through the Dell thingy as the CD did not come with the computer on a CD it came on it It had to be burned off to a CD this is why I hate dell I regret buying a quot pre-made quot PC quot It's a lot easier just to buy quot I said Oh how dumb I was I have another Windows XP Home Edition CD that came with another computer could I reformat and use that one instead of the one that quot came quot with this computer if it's the XP CD

A:Quick question?

Your two possibilities are possible (XP CD bad and/or HD bad), but I think it's more likely that your CD-Drive is bad.

Also, you can burn another disk and try it. But if the optical drive is bad, the CD it makes will be too. A sub-catagory of the "bad optical drive" is a bad cable. Both IDE and SATA cables can go bad.

Did you have any errors during the installation ?

If your XP Home is the Retail version, you can use it on this computer as long as it is not installed on another computer. There's some tricky caveat in the Rules about this; I think you are allowed to have it on one desktop and one laptop, as long as one or the other doesn't connect to the internet or something. Anyways, Retail version lets you do something like this.

OEM does not. It's a one-time shot. Technically, the OEM disk won't know that it was (or is) installed on a previous computer, but MS will know when you run Windows Update. There is a hardware code registered with MS the first time a XP installation visits Windows Update, and if the hardware on the original machine changes signficantly, so does the code and MS "knows" the hardware has changed. Sometimes changing a hard drive or motherboard will result in MS flagging the XP installation, and then you have to call MS's toll-free number and explain to them that you changed the HD or the motherboard or whatever. Then they "revalidate" your O/S and you are able to run normally.

This forum does not allow discussion of subject matter that falls outside what they consider to be "the law", so be careful how you respond to this post, and any others on this subject.

Hello all....for my classes I converted the pages into printed PDF pages so I can have the book as an ebook but when I try to do OCR recognition within PDF it says "Acrobat could not perform recognition (OCR) on this page because: This page has graphics other than images or text on it. It cannot be captured"

To go around this; I want to do a "fake scan" or scan it from the PDF files themselves rather than scan the pages on an actual scanner (since I have the files already on PDF on my computer) so I can then do the OCR text recognition. Does anyone know a way to do this?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Whats better, NVIDIA GEForce 210 or NVIDIA GEForce 8800 GTS, or are they even the same thing?

A:Quick Question

On paper, the 8800 is better. Assuming it's clocked to what Nvidia have on their site of course. In my experience most of the cards I've had are underclocked. The memory bandwidth alone is almost 5x better on an 8800 though.

NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
NVIDIA Geforce 210

From experience, I have had a 210, and it really depends what you want from it. It is definitely not a gaming card, but if you want a decent entry level card that can play some older games, and watch HD video, then it is not bad at all. I've never had an 8800 so can't comment.

Hello, all.

Right, I only have a 400W PSU at the minute, and I fear this is not enough to properly power my machine. I intend to buy a new one at 750W some time soon, but I wonder if there is a way to determine if my current PSU is a little too weak for my system?

I have attached a snip of SpeedFan's power section, in case that could be an indicator.

A:Quick question about my PSU.

Those voltages don't look right. The +5V lines are well out of spec. What figures do you get on the appropriate page in the BIOS?

The voltages should lie within the following ranges (we can ignore the negative rails, as these are not used any more):

Loose Tolerance -10%/+8%:

3.3V 2.97V / 3.63V
5.0V 4.5V / 5.4V
12.0V 10.8V / 12.9V

Tight Tolerance -5%/+5%

3.3V 3.135V / 3.465V
5.0V 4.75V / 5.25V
12.0V 11.4V / 12.6V

Your +5V line is reporting a deviation from the nominal level of +37% in the first column and -28% in the second, both figures are well out of the tolerance ranges.

I need to know whether or not I can use the OS on a HDD which was in a prebuilt computer for an upgrade. I would be keeping the HDD because there is nothing wrong with it and it has all of my data on it. The parts I would be replacing would be the motherboard, CPU, Case, and RAM. I'd be keeping the sound card, HDD, Optical drive, and GPU (yes, it works fine).

A:Quick Question.

Once you replace the motherboard, that ends the use of that operating system while there are times a call to Microsoft and a "sob story" may get some sympathy, legally the answer is no. Now a retail version of Windows, that you bought if it is a retail version is another story but the code in it carries whether it is oem (original equipment manufacturer) or retail.

If I had a virus in quarantine could it still be active? I have been fighting with a "virus" for weeks causing internet connectivity issues. I recently updated MBAM one more time and figured I would run it. When I opened it I randomly clicked to the quarantine tab and saw a virus in there (trojan I wish I had taken down the name) and decided to actually delete it. Since then I seem to be running okay...weird? Let me know some thoughts on that...Thanks

A:Quick question I think!

When an anti-virus or security program quarantines a file and moves it into a virus vault (chest) or a dedicated Quarantine folder, that file is safely held there and no longer a threat. The file is essentially disabled and prevented from causing any harm to your system through proprietary security routines which may copy, rename, encrypt and password protect the file as part of the moving process. Quarantine is just an added safety measure which allows you to view and investigate the files while keeping them from harming your computer. One reason for doing this is to prevent deletion of a legitimate file file that may have been flagged as a "false positive" especially if the scanner uses heuristic analysis technology. Heuristics is the ability of a scanning program to detect possible new variants of malware before the vendor can get samples and update the program's definitions for detection. Heuristics uses non-specific detection methods to find new or unknown malware which allows the anti-virus to detect and stop if before doing any harm to your system. The disadvantage to using heuristics is that it is not as reliable as signature-based detection (blacklisting) and can potentially increase the chances that a non-malicious program is flagged as suspicious or infected. If that is the case, then you can restore the file and add it to the exclusion or ignore list. When the quarantined file is known to be malicious, you can delete it at any time by launching the program which removed it, going to the Quarantine tab, and choosing the option to delete.Keep in mind, however, that if these files are left in quarantine, other scanning programs and security tools may flag them as a threat while in the quarantined area so don't be alarmed if you see such an alert. Just delete the quarantined items after confirming they are malware and subsequent scans should no longer detect them.Clean, Quarantine, or Delete?

Hey guys, My bro has XP on his comp and its slow as all hell. What i do to clear out my comps, or my current comp with 98, is start up and go to c promt, and just do format c:q ... I do it with the 98 upgrade disk and the 95 disk as proof i own a Operating system. My question is, I dont have a XP disk, but is there anyway to do format c:q without owning the actually XP disk...? or is there any otehr way i can just erase everything, and still have the OS.

A:quick question.....

If you do not have the xp disk or a recovery disk, I would not format the system drive. Some computers come with a hidden partition on the disk. This is the recovery partition.

If you bought the computer [and the license for xp] you are entitled to have the os. It can be a real cd, a recovery cd, a hidden partition, however the seller of the computer should have given it to you.

If you are having problems with the computer running slowly, run spybot, do a disk cleanup, and then defrag the system. See how it runs after that.

I have 1gb memory now. 2x512. I used the crucial scanner to figure out what I need. I want one more GB. They are showing the 2x512 as the reccomended upgrade, which costs $53. But I also noticed that there is 1gb of a single stick of 1gb for $42. Does it make a difference if I install one 1gb, or 2 512s? Are they just trying to get me to buy the more expensive package? It does say the 1gb is compatible, but reccomends the 2 sticks. It also says, "Your system requires that you install memory in pairs." I have 4 banks with 2 slots each. Does this mean that both slots in a bank have to be full? That I cant just place the 1gb in there instead of two 5x12s?

Two more 512 sticks is better. Because that way your memory will still be in dual channel mode while adding just another 1GB stick forces you to run in single channel, which is slower.

So, i got my highspeed connection hooked up here (DSL) and I have 3 comps hooked up to a router with the dsl modem hooked up to the router as well. So basically the comps connect through the router wich connects to the modem.

I was told that a router works best because it regenerates the signal rather than just diving it amongst the computers. I didnt really wana do any research on it cuz i was just looking for a quick answer.

If all three comps are running and surfing the web, will that mean 1 comp will have higher speeds than the other or are all connected at the same speed (if so is it the highest speed or is it divided amongst 3 comps).

Yes, you can reinstall from that same disc and you can easily reactivate it over and over again.

Better yet, navigate into the backup app, and make a system image and then you can just this to put your machine back to the way that it is right now in just a matter of minutes without having to reinstall.

The max for VCD burning onto a dvd is 700mb. You can't burn raw avi's onto that because they take up alot more space. The quality is about the same as VHS tape. I would recommend that you consider buying a DVD rw (they are very cheap), converting your files to mpegs and burn to DVD.

I'm not sure what you mean by crosshair. Are you asking if your current set of memory would work with the same type, only a smaller capacity? If so, then yes, the memory will work fine together, all assuming your motherboard is capable of using that much memory.

On another note, are you really sure you are doing something with the computer that will utilize 20 GB of memory?

Ok, I was wondering how to change the size of my "title bar". It is really short and small. I'll attach a picture so you can see what it looks like.

I bet this is an easy thing to fix but I looked on Google and i couldn't find how to.

Hello, I recently bought windows 7 upgrade home premium online and installed it "fresh". Now if I upgrade my computer ie motherboard or hardrive or reformat later down the road, can I reinstall windows 7? Do I have to call up and let them know I upgraded or reformated like I had to with xp? Do they do that with windows 7?

A:Quick Question

Hello Freeman, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Yes, you can reinstall on your computer as many times as you like. If online activation should fail since you updated the motherboard, then you can just do a phone activation instead.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I recently bought a much more powerful UPS for my main machine. The manual says to put the UPS at least 2 feet from my monitor meaning it puts out a good amount of EMI. While keeping it away from my monitors isn't a problem, keeping it 2ft from any one machine is ( I have 3). The best I can do is about 1ft. Will the EMI affect my machine and if so, how? My old backup was a 600v UPS and was pretty much right next to my machine and I never had any trouble. Any info is appreciated.

A:Quick Question Regarding EMI

Two feet from the monitor seems realistic but I see no problem with less than the two foot rule for the machine(s). The EMI could pose a problem with some components theoretically but in the real world you should be OK.

You helped me fix some things on my computer the other day. All has gone well except I have had to run Ada ware and other programs just to keep it clean if I go on the internet at all. Anyway, I have noticed something new, last one on the bottom of the list, so would you check it all out again to see if it is still clean. Thanks.....for all you do for everyone.

A:A quick question

threestar

You didn't post the new log. Anyway once the system is clean steps need to be taken to make it harder for that crap to get installed. If you simply went through the removal process without taking preventive steps..you'll get it all back in a matter of days. Please read through the spyware prevention section on how to protect yourself from spyware/adware Here

Take heed...and use the programs and methods recommended.

I'm converting a bunch of DVD files to MKV and expect it to take quite a bit of time. My 8yr old daughter has her own user account, and uses the computer a lot for school and games, and obviously I don't want her to accidentally disturb the running task.. If I switch from my user account to hers, will the task on my account keep running, or will it suspend until I log back on again?

Thanks..

A:Quick Question...

Code:
If you click the Switch User button, all active programs and network connections will continue to run (the session remains active), and you will return to the Welcome screen, where other users can log on. The user's session will remain active until the computer is restarted or the user is logged off of the session.
I will test it real quick starting a clean of some sort.
Update: IT will continue running, your daughter might slow the process, and she might have some laggy issues or something depending on how fast your pc is nd how heavy the process running is. But it will work.

I bought my PC last year and I was running Trend Micro Antivirus and webroot spyware. Both Subscriptions are up and I just renewed the Trend and the new software from trend has both virus and spyware. Do I need the webroot anymore?

So is there really a reason to have both the programs since the trend does both?

I think its a good idea to have more than one layer of protection. However it will probebly slow your machine down quite a bit. If you have a fast system then why not? Even if you disable the on access scanner and just use one to run a scan everyday instead of realtime protection that would be good too.

Hi,

This is just a quick question about something I've been curious about for a while now.

What is the difference between:

**sfc /scannow

**Going to "local disc" > properties > tools > Error Checking and clicking the "check now" button

**Inserting the Windows XP CD and choosing "repair" and then typing "chkdsk /r

Or are they all really the same thing, just different ways to do it?

What is the line I have to type on Command Prompt to instantly end all the process of 1 program (closing it)?

A:Quick Question

AFAIK, there is no command in XP to do this. You would need to use Task Manager.

Hi, i don't know where to post this but i'm still having a problem with my laptop network.

I have been using Windows Vista for over 8 years now. I still have IE 7 installed. The problem is, I'm beginning to have trouble accessing most sites with it anymore (I dont really use it. I just connect to the Internet with it and then launch Firefox to do my browsing). I decided to finally upgrade to IE 9. If there is any problems with this update can I simply restore my computer to go back to the way everything was?

A:Just a quick question

I'm not sure what you mean by this. You don't need to launch Internet Explorer to connect to the internet - you can simply launch Mozilla Firefox and you're good to go.

Glad to hear it. I suggest downloading and installing all available updates from Microsoft for additional fixes of bugs, security patches, etc.

As for being able to revert back, yes, you can. You would have a couple options: 1) Perform a System Restore 2) Disable IE9 through Programs and Features.

Kindly correct me if I'm wrong but looking at this link http://www.techspot.com/news/61562-windows-10-download-available-now-heres-how.html
it says : If you don?t want to wait around for Microsoft to get to you, you can simply download a 32- or 64-bit copy of Windows 10 right now. & it gives this link http://www.techspot.com/downloads/6734-windows-10-installation-tool.html so my question is if I download from that link & put it on a thumb/flash drive & install from there, is that all I need to do to get W10? I know, I am impatient, but curious also. If this is incorrect, I'll wait Yes, I know my product key TIA

A:One quick W10 question

There's no need for a thumb drive. The software will take care of the installation including its activation. You won't be asked for a key.

Recently spent many days fixing my brother's laptop computer, attempting to save some personal files before doing a Dell "system restore to new" action. I saw in his bios that the computer would boot from a USB device. Is it practical or possible to have a USB flash disk and load Windows Vista on it to boot from? How about a USB external drive? Thanks for your time.
