Restarting computer, not fault of XP?

Q: Restarting computer, not fault of XP?

My computer has begun to restart itself every time I turn it on. Sometimes it waits until I get into windows and sometimes its while its booting up. Does any one have any suggestions on what could be causing this problem? Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Restarting computer, not fault of XP?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi

Faulty OS,
Faulty PSU
Faulty Board.

Check the board capacitors for any that look bubbled on the top and rusty marks on them, sure sign they are failing.

Swap out the PSU.

Press F8 after the PC Post screen and before the XP logo and from the menu choose safemode and see if it restarts in that. If it doesn't its definately an OS fault, if it does refer to above.

Remove all devices apart from one stick of memory and the VGA card and the bootable drive, now see if it does it, if it doesnt then one of the items removed may be responsible, if it does refer to above

Just some suggestions...

Hello I have had this same computer running just fine for a while now I updated the BIOS and now the computer restarts after windows loading Reverting to the old BIOS did not fix the problem I had some issues with the rig when I first assembled it and they were solved by tweaking BIOS settings Since the update reset my settings I m guessing this might be the case again The problem in detail The computer boots normally and gets to Windows loading screen The windows logo manages to fully load stays for a while then computer restarts When trying to boot into safemode loading. after at fault? How do I restart windows XP without restarting my computer?

The reason I ask is I suspect that auto shut off monitor gets tired of going on then off then on again.

A:Restarting Windows XP without restarting computer

You can't actuall restart XP without restarting the computer. You can logoff, but that will still wake up the monitor.

If you want to turn off the monitor auto-shutoff, go to your control panel and open up power options.

You can get use the presentation mode to not turn off the monitor.

I bought a new iPod 6th Generation .. and I came home to connect it to my computer.. My computer did not see it there on none of my USB's... I made sure the USB are updated in Device Manager. So then I go and connect it to my MA's computer, (Also Windows 7) and her computer recognizes it and displays a bubble saying its installing drivers.. and it was recognized in her iTunes as well and I restored it.. Well.. My computer has all my 1,000 songs.. so I need it to work here... I don't understand and as you can imagine it is very frustrating..

I really think its my computers problem because my ma's computer see it just fine.. Help? (:

Dear all,

My computer has been resetting itself quite frequently and randomly, and when i get back to Win XP, it says Windows have recovered from a serious error, and i clicked on more info, it gave me this:

Can anyone tell me where the problem lies? I'm quite sick of those random restarts while working on a project or playing my game...

Thanks in advance for your help!

A:Computer restarts itself randomly - Win XP fault?

Those type of errors are very often a hardware incompatibility problem or a driver incompatibility problem. Here is a mskb article that explains your problem.

Could really do with some advise I have looked around but I cannot find anyone that has posted about HD a computer, a think New Problems to driver moveing with fault i it having this problem So I bought a computer about a year ago And now I am upgrading to a new build so my brother can have the st computer But as I wanted to keep all my programs files etc I want to just move my hard drive over So everything has changed in the computer apart from the Problems with moveing HD to a New computer, i think it a driver fault RAM my brother doesn t need GB I have even changed from a AMD to Intel Processor Now this is where it gets interesting the motherboard in the st computer is an ASUS I bought an ASRock motherboard for the new computer put it all together and it worked fine all I had to do was install the new mother board drivers but I Problems with moveing HD to a New computer, i think it a driver fault noticed that I had only put in one GB RAM card one I added the other it wouldn t boot turns out it was Dr debug code a common problem that is a manufacture fault so I returned it and got my money back So now I have bought a new motherboard this one is an ASUS board After Putting it all together and turning it on it starts to load the windows image animation shows and just before it would usually go to the login page it takes you to the black and white screen I forget the name that you get on start-up saying that windows has failed to start and I have two options run windows repair Start windows normally Starting windows normally simply restarts the process Running windows repair runs for about half an hour then says its finished and restarts the computer after restart it just does the same again So I then put the HD back into the old computer and rolled it back to before I installed the ASRock MB thinking that there may be some limit of motherboard drivers it can hold or something stupid This didn t change anything I think that what has happened is that as the Computer is booting with the new ASUS MB it thinks it already has the drivers for it because the old MB was also ASUS And as it loads it figures out that they aren t the rite drivers and panics So that s where I am now I have backed everything up and don t mind reformatting the HD and starting from new but I don t know how to do that I would prefer to just remove all Drivers and the move it to the new computer because then I would still have all my programs but I don t know how to do that and I don t even know it will work P S sorry its a long read

A:Problems with moveing HD to a New computer, i think it a driver fault

With the different hardware, Windows is confused. You can try startup repair but I doubt that it will fix it. Your best option is a clean install (reformat the hard drive and reinstall everything). But, before you do that you will need to backup the user data on the drive so you can recover that after you rebuild the hard drive. Copy the user files to another hard drive or some other media. You will have to reinstall all programs after you do the clean Windows install, you can't just copy programs.

Here is the info on a clean install from our Windows 7 guru's. Clean Install Windows 7

Lets say that i downloaded a pdf file. If i put that file on to the desktop it will be there. But when you restart your computer or shut down your computer, you log back on and its not there. If i download poweriso, i install it into c: drive and it will work. But when you turn the computer off or reboot it, you log back on and its not thereI know its not a virus. Its like a school computer you can only save it into your drive. If you save it into a desktop it wont be thereI think someone put a system restore or a default. so when you turn it off it will reset it to the what you had when you turned it onI have a dell computer running windows 10

Was this system ever joined to a corporate or a school network? It might be a group policy that is making your user profile act this way.

As the title states my computer froze. It has frozen two times within 3 or 4 hours now, and on the last restart i had a BSOD straight after entering my password and logging into windows(Did not get the desktop).
After another restart I've had no problems. Did a scan with Microsoft Security Essentials which was clean.

The freezes started randomly while watching youtube videos, I've had no problems with this in the past(Except for Flash player crashing a few times).

I've included a zip file from the SF Diagnostics Tool as instucted.

A:Computer Freezing for a short time (Hardware Fault)

Identical problem here.. hard drive light goes solid and pc just stops for 1 min, still able to move the mouse cursor but cannot slect anything or alt-tab etc. Any alt tab or double clicking is cached up and then all fired off at once when the minute freeze is up.

I'm pretty certain now it's down to my Asus P5K-E motherboard (which is what I assume the original poster has)

I'm looking towards M/Board now as I have swapped drives and changed CPU from Q6600 to Q8200 also switched from Vista 32bit to Win7 64bit and still get the issue.

I alleviated it for a while by switching my SATA 300 drive down to 150 mode by setting the jumpers.

Have flashed the P5K to the latest bios with no joy.

Full specs are..
Q8200 Quad
Asus P5K-E Wifi Premium
500GB Samsung SATA300
4GB Ram
lightscribe 20x DVDRW
Sony Bluray Drive (installed after problem had already appeared)
2 x ATI HD3870's in crossfire config.

Hi, and thank you for taking your time to help me

So each night I take my computer along with monitors etc. out of the power plug in the wall.
When I but the power plug back in to start the computer up, my keyboard instantly powers on, the same goes with my two monitors.
When I then turn on the computer nothing really happens. All of the fans and lights turn on (The MoBo fan spins insanely), but nothing comes on the monitor screen. The monitors keeps searching for a unit but won't find the computer.

Sometimes after waiting a few minutes the screen suddenly shows the startup of windows and I can use it normally.

I think it's an hardware related problem but I'm not entirely sure.
I use windows 10.

Hope you can help me

Please post complete specs of the system in question including PSU type/model etc.

Stress test your graphic card with OCCT, and RAM with memtest (you can find it in techspot's download section). Run minimum of 8 passes on each individual RAM Module.

Also ensure that your RAM's specs are correctly set in BIOS.

A:My computer keeps restarting

Hi Juancho19,

System restarting randomly could be due to a 'hardware or a software' issue. However, since it works fine in 'Safe Mode' it appears to be 'software related'. Would like to know if you've performed an 'anti-virus' scan. If not, please try doing it and see if any infections are detected. Also observe the system in 'normal mode' to see if any definite pattern is evident while it shuts down/restarts. Try to check if that happens when a specific application is in use. Also check if there are any symptoms of 'overheat'.

Please follow the steps in this tutorial to capture all necessary information for proper investigation of the issue: Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions

Do reply with the findings; will take it forward from there.

Just recently I was playing Men of Valor untill my computer restarted, I thought it was no problem and just shut of my computer and went to sleep. The next morning I woke up and my CMOS battery was reset so I put back the boot sequence and started up Windows. I try to play Men of Valor again and after a couple of minutes a blue screen pops up for a split second and my computer restarts. My computer keeps restarting when I try to play my games. I've just recently upgraded some parts on my computer; I replaced my Ti4200 64mb to a Ti4400 128mb and added 256mb (making my total memory to 768). Anyone have any ideas to what is causing my computer to keep restarting?

Athlon XP 1800 (stock cooling) @ 1.15Ghz
756MB of RAM

I am having some problems with a computer. I have finally gotten it to start in normal mode. It has done and update, and now wants to restart. I would like to run some other things before I do that, but I know as soon as I turn my back (which is what I intend to do), the computer will restart itself, killing whatever application I am trying to run, and possibly keeping me from getting the computer fixed.

Please help

A:Computer keeps restarting.

Navigate to C:/Windows/Minidump
post 5-6 of the most recent ones here, and someone will analyze it for you.

If its power, are you sure your PSU is meeting the requirements of the PC's total hardware? use this calculator to find out your minimum (add 50w for headroom)

Check the motherboard itself for any signs of damage/shorting like burn marks, stains, popped capacitors etc. If not already done so, update drivers for your motherboard..

A:computer restarting

Quite a few reasons why a computer might randomly restart.

1. Overheating - Check the inside of yer case and verify all cooling fans are operational and that the system is dust free. If you see a blanket in there thats probabaly yer issue.
2. Motherboard failing.....faulty capacitors. These are the little cylinders all over the motherboard. The most common sign of fault will be signs of leakage or the tops are split open. Check the video card for this condition as well.
3. Ram failing.... Download memtest86 http://www.memtest86.com/download.html and test it.
4. Power supply failing...... this one isn't real easy to check if yer not handy with a multimeter. Best thing in this case is to just try and swap it out.

A:computer restarting itself

It could be a software infection like malware, spyware, virus or harware issue like CPU overheating, video card problem or PSU issue.

Try downloading hwmonitor, speedfan or use bios to monitor your cpu heat. try running antivirus/antispyware program in both normal mode and safe mode.

Please post also your computer specs if possible.

The windows memory diagnostic isn't very good I would retest it with memtest. You should also test you HDD while your at it, the ultimatebootcd has both memory and HDD utilities on it so you can do those tests. Another thing that comes to mind is the PSU, if you've got a meter you can check it to a certain extent. Also inspect the motherboard see if there are any bulging or burst capacitors.

There're only 2 things which will not give you error logs or BSOD messages.

1_ NMI (non-maskable interrupt) - This is the cold boot sequence every PC compatible performed upon boot, the pointer address entry for this interrupt is all high as in "FFF..." which is the top most address of the ROMBIOS in your PC. Many hardware problems can return an NMI pointer causing the computer to instantly reboot without messages of any kind.

For example, a hardware device latency delay reading back data in Tri-Stated conditions will do so, Tri-Stated conditions by default is a "high" logic resulting in "FFF..." for return pointer values.

But the delay must be fairly large as most slight delays will only cause corrupted pointers, which ending up with typical guru meditations the likes of "greater than or not equal to" for out of range or invalid interrupt pointer addresses which all of them are "maskable", logable, and loopable.

2_ Logic Voltage drop out conditions - self explanatory, no power, no logic, no computing, no messages.

Normally for anything similar to your case I would suggest power defficiency, however that is a world famous VIA chipset mobo you have therefore you can't discount that it is not being VIA's world famous latency hardware engineering as your problem.

A:A bug??...computer keeps restarting

You're most definitely infected.

Click here to download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Install Ewido.
During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
Launch ewido.
It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen.
On the left side of the main screen click update.
Click on Start and let it update.
DO NOT run a scan yet.

Restart your computer into Safe Mode now.
(Start tapping the F8 key at Startup, before the Windows logo screen).
Perform the following steps in Safe Mode:

* Run Ewido:
Click on scanner
Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK.
When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
Save the report to your desktop.

Reboot.

Post a new Hijack This log (from Normal Mode) and the results of the Ewido scan.

Hi ppl... I'm new to this forum and have a question about some problems I'm having with my computer. I've been on other forums and I figured out that it's not a virus that's been screwing with my computer. It seems like it's a hardware thing but I'm not sure which part of my computer is the problem. Anyhow, my computer restarts at the WinXP logo screen and gives me a blue screen with an error on it. The errors vary sometimes but one I've seen regularly is an IRQL_NOT_LESS_ THAN type of error. Can't get the exact wording right off the top of my head. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Savahria welcome to TSG. Can you post back here in your next reply the make and model of the Graphics Card and the Make, Model, Wattage and +12V rail amerage (found on a sticker on the unit) of your Power Supply Unit. Have you checked your temps lately? Go HERE and Download and run the HWMonitor (free version) and then post a screenshot BEFORE and AFTER you are playing a game.

Hi. I built a computer for my brother a few years back. (windows 2k). He moved to a new apartment with it. After a few months he began to have problems with it randomly resetting. He'll be in the middle of something and it'll just reset.

Do you think it's a virus? Maybe a heat issue and the computer just resets itself to cool off? (It doesn't have as much space around the tower in the new apartment) Any suggestions?

I'm probably going to go down and try to fix it in a few weeks, but I don't have access to it yet, so I figured I'd ask around so I could be prepared.

Thanks
-Andrew

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Please update your version of hijackthis and move it to it's own folder on the root drive (C:\HJT). Since your having issues in normal mode...you may need to download the tools and programs I'm going to ask you to use from another PC..and transphere them to the infected PC. We will do most of the fixs in safe mode anyway.

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run ad-aware SE with VX2 add-on cleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy (with updated database) and CWShredder as these programs will clean a lot of the crap out first. All links to programs are in my signature. Ok..on to the log?..

Download Winsock2Fix and unzip it. Then double-click on it to run it.

Download and install CleanUp http://cleanup.stevengould.org/

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also. Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Open add/remove programs and remove the following if listed.

WildTangent
WeatherBug

Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be but make sure)

C:\Documents and Settings\BRIAN J. AMBROSI\Application Data\polr.exe

Check and fix the following in HijackThis if they still exist (make sure you do not miss an entry)

My computer started being pretty annoying. After having it on for about 5-8 hours, it restarts itself. Now I am not sure if it's a program I am running... I checked my DVD ripping program and it isn't that... and that was the only program I was running. Now this is a family computer, therefore anyone in my house could of screwed with some computer settings...

Anyways, please help!

A:Computer restarting itself

There are many reasons a system will restart. First of all tell it not to restart on errors. This will give you a bsod [blue screen of death] with error info on the screen. This can help with finding the problem. This setting is in control panel>system>advanced>startup and recovery. Note I assume you are using xp so that is from memory. It might be in a slightly different spot; look around and you will find it.

Next check your temps in the bios and post those here along with the type of cpu. If a system is overheating, it will restart.

There are many more things to check however that should keep you busy for a while. Post back with results.

My computer is restarting every 50 seconds or so and I can't do anything about it. I've tried all the tips I know to get through with this but nothing worked out. I tried re-installing Windows-xp believing that if some files are damaged that could solve the problem, but the installation could not be completed, first several .dll files could not be copied then the catalog products and after skipping all this the installation shuts down 7 min before the end with an error message that notifies me of an sntf.sys file that cannot be installed. So, in brief, I can't complete the installation, it does that every time I try.
I just hope someone can help!

my computer is restarting by itself even when im onot doing anything on it, how do i stoip this?

A:computer restarting by itself

if its xp
however caution if this is continous

is the PC / CPU hot - sometimes you have software to monitor temp - or you can read in bios

you may also find some info in the event viewer
control panel>
admin tools>
event viewer>
goto
control panel>
system>
advanced tab>
startup and recovery - settings>
under the title - system failure
untick - automatically restart

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320299

now when it crashes - it willnot restart and the blue screen should stay on the screen
post the info on the screen
it will give the errorcodes and a filename, if caused by a driver.

in the meantime
you may want to try running a memeory test

Hi all. Would appreciate some help on this.

My computer keeps restarting when i open certain programs or attempt to go into certain folders. I keep restoring windows to an earlier time and things seem to work for a while, but then the problem comes back. It happens usually when i open some programs like photoshop or attempt to go into files like documents and settings/ application data etc. does anyone know what the problem is?
btw, i also get this blue screen before logon saying 'Regrun partizan root killer (c) graetis software'. I have no idea what this is or of this is causing the problem.

Thanks in advance.

A:Computer Keeps Restarting

Greetings bluesfan1 and to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum. My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you!===================================================Ground Rules:First, I would also like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met. Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance. Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence. Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me about it.
When you post your reply, do not use the button but use the button instead.
In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response. If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.Now let's get started ===================================================Please allow me some time to review the information you have provided. I will post back as soon as possible.

over and over..so the cd didn't work for me :( i haven't tried recovery console yet..so idk if i should do that? i have important files that i haven't backed up
yet. anyone who can tell me what to do? :(

*note* i have windows xp pro updated with current service pack

Rather than the repair CD, if you have the OS CD see what happens if you put it in, but don't make a selection. As far as the Recovery Console, read this first:

I think you its your power supply. If you built the computer yourself and used a free with case PSU then that is likely the problem.

Is the computer getting enough ventilation? Putting computers in a closet can sometimes lead to overheating issues.

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster. NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of hartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer. NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.Security CheckDownload Security Check by screen317 from here.Save it to your Desktop.Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.Run Combofix:You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal. You can download Combofix from one of these links.Link 1Link 2Link 31. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts. When finished, it will produce a report for you. Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stallNote 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer"information and logs"In your next post I need the following

I read a post about someones computer restarting randomly. I am having that problems, not as often as the person in the post, but it is still annoying. Someone told her to try something on the web that tests the harddrive to tell you if it's going bad. Could I try this? I didn't wanna follow advice meant for someone else before asking here. If I can could someone direct me to where this test can be found?
Thank You
-Cheryl

A:Restarting Computer...

There is more than one Hard Drive Diagnostic tool you could use, so I couldn't tell you which one you are talking about. Do you remember what thread it was? If you do post the link.

You should also post exactly what is going on with your computer. Maybe someone can solve the problem in this thread.

Hello,

Hey I got this problem about the computer just restarts itself right before it even shows the "Welcome" screen, and never even reaches the desktop! I only see a black screen where in fact it should display the welcome screen, and it restarts! So far, currently I'm on Safe mode with networking. There were no error messages whatsoever but this all happened after I installed Comodo Internet Security and BitDefender 10. I doubt this is a overheating problem because it happens everytime I boot normally and I have 2 fans, 1 is a cpu fan and a fan behind the cpu.

My system is Intel Pentium IV, Windows XP (Service Pack 2), 364mb ram, 32GB hard-drive with 2 partitions. My video card is nVidia GeForce MX series. It's currently 4 years old.

Any help would be appreciated.

so does anyone know what i have to do?

A:Computer keeps restarting,

You could try different drivers on that. Also, how much ram are you running? It seems like something in your machine is getting overloaded and needing to reboot because it's in need of relief.

Hi,

New to the group and I hope you can help. My husband has a Dell Laptop Inspiron 5100 and it went kaput. I know my way around a computer and I'm at a loss. It keeps restarting. You get the Dell logo logging in and then the Windoows XP loading with the blue bar at the bottom and then it just keeps doing those 2 steps over and over again. I put the bootable cd that I have to restore windows but it doesn't detect it. I went into the bios and made sure that the cd was set to load first and still...nothing. I'm hoping someone can help me?

Thanks
Shari

A:Computer Keeps Restarting

How old is this machine out of curiosity?

Could you please turn off the computer, and unplug the AC Adapter and Remove the battery.
Leave the Laptop this way for about a minute, then plug in the AC Adapter only, leave the
battery out. We want to see if the battery is causing some issue. If this works, all the better.
If it fails, you may have some dying hardware in which case you would contact Dell for further
options.

Let us know what you find.

A:Computer Restarting Need Help

first provide your system specs and ill see what i can do to help you out even more.

one thing you can do is to test your ram for any errors. check out www.majorgeeks.com and download memtest86 and put the program on a floppy or cd. then you will need to boot off of memtest86. first though you will need to go into the bios and change the first boot device to "floppy" or "cdrom"

save settings, exit the bios and the computer should boot to memtest86. then the program will begin testing out you ram for any errors. let memtest86 go for about 10passes minimum and see if it detects any errors with your ram.

also how much power supply are you running? is this fairly new system?

another thing you can do is to scan your hdd for any errors. if your hdd didnt come with a diagnostics utility then download it off from the manufacturer's website. boot with the diagnostics utility, follow the on-screen instructions, and then test your hdd for any errors.

good luck and post back if you need more help.

My computer has been running a bit strange lately.
Randomly the monitor will go black and then an error message will occur telling me that a stop error has occured your system has stopped for safety reasons.

I am running a
Pentium 4 3.0ghz HT
512 DDR 400
Windows Home SP2
Segate 200g Hard Drive

A:My Computer Keeps Restarting

Safety reason? I think it would not restart if there's no "danger" involved lol. Nvm, but it is relater to a "overheating"? we need to know what does the error message tell you about, so that we could help you better.

btw, if your computer is so called quite old (2-3 years old or more), such little problem like dust could affect your system stability.

A:Computer keeps restarting

One thing is to make sure your computer meets the games system requirements.. it sorta sounds like either an overheating issue or incompatibilty.
Does your video card have a heat sink and/or a fan? Make sure the fan is spinning at boot and that the fan is free of dust build-up

I think a good place to go is the BSOD section. Follow the instructions here, then post in the forum there. They can help you find out the cause of your Blue Screen of Deaths.

So my computer just restarted out of the blue, I'm a little scared because I just had to rebuild my computer because of the startup loop virus, and restarting was what was happening before.

I went to the Event Viewer and found this under SYSTEM under SAVE DUMP:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x100000c5 (0x000006a8, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x8054c0b9). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini052808-01.dmp.

What exactly is a bugcheck?

A:Computer Restarting

An explaination here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bug_checkAs to the cause of the problem, the above topic mentions kernal drivers as the cause of these problems, but who knows it may be something else altogether.

Ok so my computer was working fine and had no problems until I turned it off the other day and then tried to turn it on the next day and it would not turn on. When I press the on button it goes to the screen that has the options for safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command, last good configuration, and start normally. I tried all of theses options and everytime I click on the option it goes to the Window XP screen and right after that it turns right back off and does that process all over again. Can some one help me fix this probably I really need it to turn on cause it has all of my information on it. HELP!!!!
