Core i7-920 vs Phenom II x4 3.7GHz for gaming

Q: Core i7-920 vs Phenom II x4 3.7GHz for gaming

I can either get a i7 920 or phenom II. Which one should I get?
I am using then for gaming.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Which stepping is the i7 920? The D0 overclocks much better than the C0 stepping.
But if they're the same price (including the price of the motherboard) I'd say go for the i7 920, mine still plays all modern games without any problems. Or if you can find an i5 2500K or 3570K for around the same price then go for those because the 920 is already 2 generations old and a bit of a power hog.

Hi guys I was wondering what your thoughts are on this plan of mine to buy one of these i5 X4 BE, II vs AMD 955 Phenom Core recommendations? processors and to compare a Biostar mobo to an MSI one which seemingly have very similar features I have a small table comparing their Core i5 vs AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE, recommendations? price points but I need an expert opinion on which one is better to spend my money on because I am limited to a budget of CAD - Also I need to know whether in the future I can count on processor upgrades from either without having to switch boards and what are my options I am hinting at core processors for both Intel and AMD that are planned for release this year I really appreciate your thoughts guys PS I already own a GTX core and an Earthwatts W PSU cert My Case contains fans of which are LED and out of them are Thermaltake Blue smart fans I wasn t sure if that info would be a factor in choosing the correct CPU Mobo combo nbsp

A:Core i5 vs AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE, recommendations?

The Core i5 750 is definitely a better processor. However, being an AMD fan, I also love the the Phenom II 955BE. If your budget permits, then go for the i5 setup.

Both the Phenom II and the i5 cater to each manufacturer's flagship socket. The LGA 1156 from Intel and the AM3 from AMD are here to stay. So you wouldn't really have to switch boards if you upgrade the CPU in the near future. However, in this regard AMD is more reserved. Intel seems to come up with new sockets fairly quickly.

The 6 core processors are Intel's Gulftown and AMD's Thuban. The Gulftown will be based on the LGA 1366 socket. The Thuban will be AM3. So if you would like to upgrade to a 6 core system without swapping the motherboard, AMD is the way to go.

All looks fine in your system. Just feel that you may be cutting it a little close with that PSU.

So I have a little question, which one would you choose and why?

I'm building a new computer but I cant decide which one to use,
the price is the same so it's even harder to decide...I think I would
take the Phenom but which would You choose?

AMD Phenom II 1090T Black Edition (HDT90ZFBGRBOX)

Inte Core i7 930 (BX80601930)

A:AMD Phenom II x6 or Intel Core i7

I am an AMD convert and own the 1090T, so guess which way I recommend .
If you are into overclocking, these things are great. Had mine running @ 4.5ghz and will run 4.0ghz 24/7 on 1.35 vcore.
It may depend on what motherboard, RAM etc costs are. i7 uses triple channel RAM so the costs will be more for that. Mobo's are generally more expensive for the i7 series too.

So I'm looking into building my first computer, and saw that Phenom II 6-core was much better than a Core i7 quad core, plus it cost much less? I'm wondering why this is. The links for both:

Phenom II 1055T x6

Core i7 920 Bloomfield x4

I know there's something I must be missing, but I can't quite tell.

A:A question about Phenom II vs Core i7

Don't believe all of the marketing hype. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, and the fanbois of each will tell you why one is better than the other.

The i7 has eight virtual cores, the Phenom has 6. The Intel will perform better at certain tasks than the Phenom. In the end, it's a price/performance issue.

My personal machine has a Phenom in it. The machines I spec for work have i7's in them. If I had the money, my own machine would have an i7, simply for the multi-threading features and better resource usage. Intels also run cooler in my experience.

I consider myself fairly unbiased, so there's my $.02

EDIT: As stormy13 has pointed out, my statement that the i7 has eight virtual cores is incorrect. I often mistakenly think of it as an 8 core CPU. In reality, the i7 920 has 4 physical cores, and 4 virtual cores, not 8 as I have stated above.

I was just wondering: I read it is possible to unclock the 4th core, but I also read that
only some bios versions and motherboards supported it. So my question is, Does my motherboard (M4N78 SE) support unclocking that core?

And if it supports it, how would I be able to unclock it?

I am working on building a new PC for myself I tried to be very careful when I installed AMD Phenom Installation Core Quad CPU the heat sink I slipped slightly causing a slight side and maybe a little up down movement after the heat sink thermal compound had touched down on the CPU Question Should I try the PC for a while with it like it is It is my understanding that modern motherboards will shut down the PC automatically if the CPU gets too hot I am thinking to give it a try tomorrow evening and watch the CPU temperature in the BIOS for a while on first boot Common sense says that although the CPU installation may not be perfect that the thermal compound will over time spread into any gaps that may be present I am sure that people that build PC s for a living occasionally slip when installing a heat sink on a CPU I have some Artic Silver on hand in the Fridge I am just trying to get out of extra work Thank You In Advance nbsp

A:AMD Quad Core Phenom CPU Installation

It will be OK , for a little side slippage happens. The close proximity of heat sink and cpu surface is paper thin, so it will be fine, as long as you started with a good compound layer. When using a tube of thermal compound, I only spread it on the surface of the cpu. The thermal compound will fill the slight gaps. Everyone should re-apply new compound every two years, for it hardens with heat over time.

I recently bought Phenom II x4 960t, and I asked someone to install it for me.
She accidentally bent 1 of the pins in the processor. We manage to straighten the pin and the processor works fine.

Now, when I'm starting my PC, BIOS shows that it has 4 cores, but in CPU-Z and MSCONFIG it only shows 1 core. In MSCONFIG>BOOT>ADVANCE OPTIONS.., there is no options for the number of processors. My Motherboard is ASROCK N68 S3 UCC,

Thank you!

I'm sorry, but CPU-Z should show 4 cores and 4 threads. If it doesn't the bent pin may indeed be the problem.

AMD's six-core Phenom II X6 CPUs will underclock three cores and automatically overclock the other three

Posted by Sean Portnoy @ 7:57 pm

More details have emerged about how AMD?s forthcoming six-core desktop CPUs, the Phenom II X6 lineup (a.k.a. Thuban), plan to handle all that processing power when most applications still can?t make use of four cores.

So I purchased a new CPU a couple months ago and didn t bother to mess with the Bios after installing it Anyway the CPU I purchased was an AMD Phenom II X BE which as I understand is supposed to have all four cores unlocked from start with no need to do anything yourself Anyway some time had passed and about a month ago I was in my Bios messing around with some settings and noticed that under CPU Settings it showed something like this Core - Unlocked Core - Unlocked Core - Unlocked Core - Locked I started up my computer without making changes to check what my computer said and sure enough in task manager it only showed three cores I m almost positive that I d remembered seeing four cores in the task manage on multiple occasions before but of course couldn t be sure So I m not sure if it was always like this from when I installed the CPU or if something changed it for the first month or two I had it installed Anyway went back into Bios and changed it to Unlocked and now all four cores show as unlocked and my computer seems to be running fine but now I am unable to see the temperature readouts for each of my cores--which I understand is a side effect from unlocking cores though I shouldn t be having that problem considering the BE is supposed to come with all four cores unlocked AFAIK I m not too concerned about the temperature thing really but I m just wondering if this would have any effect on my computer or if it could mean that the CPU is faulty or something along those lines I appreciate mean CPU 965 locked core, had BE AMD a faulty? this Phenom X4 is could my II any help thanks nbsp

A:AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE had a locked core, could this mean my CPU is faulty?

I think the the X4 BE is supposed to have 6 cores, with 2 of them locked out. It almost sounds like you have an X3, with 1 of 4 cores locked out. My 970 BE showed 6 cores, with 2 locked out, when I first got it. But I think I may have over-cooked it, or something, when I enabled all 6 cores, and overclocked it, because now it only shows 4 cores. None are locked, though. It runs fine at 4GHz, with 1.5V to it, and 17V to the cooling fan.

Assuming that they are in working condition, those two guys are good general-purpose CPUs although not anywhere near the top of the scale. 15 bucks apiece is a low price for them.
Look here. Use their score to compare to other CPUs you have that they benchmarked. Your current processor is here.

Also, from here there are more comparisons. It appears to be around 1/3 the power of a modern top-dog CPU.

Still, please note that they are compatible with AM2+ and maybe AM3 sockets ONLY (being from AMD), so you won't be able to place them in your current PC nor use your current CPU cooler on them.
Then again, good AM2+ boards can be found for pretty damn cheap in thrift shops (look inside the used PCs they have too) or on ebay.

i have a Intel E5400 Overclocked to 3.23GHz and was going to upgrade to a Q9400 quad and was wondering as i mainly use my PC for high end gaming is quad core as important as it is used more for multitasking and i was told dual would be better for gaming is this true?

A:What is better for PC gaming Dual Core or Quad Core?

It's a little confusing. I'd say in general, quad-core processors are more powerful than dual core; however, that doesn't necessarily mean faster.

Certain programs are written to take advantage of multi-core processors, like many games and power-hungry programs such as Photoshop.

However, not all are. Windows does its best to distribute the load evenly, but it's not the same.

Furthermore, many quad core processors are clocked at a lower rate than dual core. Your dual-core processor is clocked at 3.23GHz; the quad is clocked at 2.66.

Bottom line: if the programs you will be running can make use of all the cores, you will very likely see a performance increase. If they are not designed that way, there is a good chance your performance will actually decrease.

In your case, I suspect the programs you will be running can make use of the 4 cores well; many games do. But use your judgment!

Hi guys.

I had definitely decided on getting myself a Phenom II X4 940 BE the coming week. However today I noticed some gaming benchmarks in which the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 came out on top over the Phenom II 940.

By getting the Phenom will I be compromising on gaming performance? I'm buying the new processor as I don't get very playable frame rates in Crysis / Assassin's Creed with my XFX 9800 GT as I'm still using a Pentium 4 2.93 GHz.

A:Intel E8400 And AMD Phenom II X4 940 BE Gaming Performance

Either chip will do fine in gaming. The big question is what type of motherboard do you currently have? If it is one that supports the e8400, I would just go that route and save money. Otherwise you would have to buy a new motherboard to go with the phenom. The e8400 is also very overclockable, I have mine at 3.8ghz for 24/7 use, and my mb is what is holding it back. If you need to buy a new motherboard regardless, you can't go wrong either way. Most games today won't fully utilize more than 2 cores, but future games may use more cores. I would even suggest even looking at a q8400/q9400 if your motherboard supports them.

Between the two, it is a no brainer. Get the 940. Next IMO you use an amd chipset board for an amd build and an intel chipset board for an intel build.

When you use third party chipset boards ie nvidia, sis, or via, you are asking for problems.
Nvidia makes fine video cards; their motherboard chipsets.... that is another matter.

With that kind of a budget you are gonna have a killer rig.

As always prices come down witn the next advance in technology on processors. But thats the thing. The next best is always right around the corner. You could be waiting forever.

You have made a good choice with the processor type. But i would go with the 6400 and overclock it. As for quad cores. It will scream depending on the application being run. But most apps won't use 4 cores as it stands right now. I think dual core will be it for a well rounded machine as it stands right now and for approx 2 years.

The video card is tough. For that i would say stick with your existing cards and hold off until the DX10 compliant cards are available. Otherwise get yourself a single 7950X2.

Hello everyone, am new here and thinking about an you can imagine. Wanted to know if running a single game application on a 3Ghz HT would be as good as some of the newer CPUS?
Any advice would be useful? Have a Herc 256 Graphics, and decent Hard disk.

A:Dual core versus 3Ghz HT for gaming?

Depends on the game. Any of the Intel Core 2 Duo\Pentium Dual-Core and AMD Athlon 64\X2 range will provide a significant performance boost compared to a Pentium 4 HT processor in games that stress the CPU more than the GPU, which is most often not the case. But the HT processor will cause a bottleneck in the system if paired with a very fast card such as an 8800GT and this will limit the card's performance quite a lot. You would see noticeable improvement but if you're not going to play very demanding games like Crysis or Unreal Tournament 3, then there's no point, unless you're upgrading after a good 3-4 years.

I'd highly recommend an E8400 processor and to not go with the P5N-D... horrible board

also, HD48xx cards are selling pretty cheap these days... i would probably recommend at least a 4850 for DX10 gaming

Hi I Solved: worth Quad for gaming? Core it really m looking at building a new gaming PC I m Solved: Quad Core really worth it for gaming? trying to stay under and only need A SLI mobo - preferably ASUS P W maybe looking into NForce i A CPU - currently looking at Q but I might go with a duo RAM - GB minimum wanted to go DDR compatible but looks too expensive Graphics card My First question is I ve been reading alot of reviews and such and most say that quad core really doesn t do much because most programs are not designed to take advantage of it yet Also I m wondering what your thoughts are on the setup I m looking at building Links to sites are welcome as long as they don t somehow break the forum rules Something I pulled from wikipedia quot Single or dual-threaded applications alone including many games do not benefit from the second pair of cores of a quad-core CPU over an equally clocked dual-core CPU For example the quad-core Extreme QX Kentsfield did not process those applications faster than the older dual-core Extreme X Conroe XE core because its FSB s speed was the same and it was clocked slightly slower Nevertheless a simultaneous running of several processor-intensive single dual-threaded applications on the quad-core CPU is generally much faster than on equally clocked dual-core CPU The quad-core CPU is useful also to run both the client and server processes of a game without noticeable lag in either thread since each instance up to four could be running on a different core Furthermore multi-threaded games see Crysis and Gears of War benefit from the quad-core CPUs because as Cervat Yerli of Crytek said four cores will make for better frame rates and gameplay since audio physics and AI and other things are all offloaded to separate cores quot Any suggestions would be appreciated thanks nbsp

Okay sorry bout my last post, but i did buy a new computer now ^w^

Though anyways im asking this, I noticed that you can set up a gaming server (Dedicated of course) And leave it running, Though of course my new computer could do pretty well with it, i though the task would be best kept with it running on it's own on my older Core 2 Duo E7300

The program im likely going to be using for running the gaming server is SRCDS (source/valve games of course) And if the core 2 duo is good enough im hopefully going to be wanting to runnn, say 2-3 servers at once if it can cope?

(RAM is 4GB btw)

I also got the thing as i noticed a post around someone saying they ran a server fine with a ancient athlon or something like that.

A:Running a Gaming server using a core 2 duo computer?

Your server will be mostly limited by your internet bandwidth.

My computer is fairly powerfull, at least enough to run a sever 24/7.
However my connection is barely 5Mbps, this only lets me support 4 players in say. A minecraft server, if anymore join lag and tearing appears for my users.

Since I don't want to pay extra to get more speed, paying someone else to host my server is way cheaper at a month to month basis. 10 dollars a month.

Something to consider.

Intel's Core i7-980X EE shows up in a slew of gaming rigs.

Spending upwards of $999 on the latest and greatest Intel processor might be overkill in most people's book, especially for the marginal performance gains you get compared to the next model down. But that isn't stopping a deluge of system builders from announcing products based on the recently announced Core i7-980X EE. The six-core, twelve-threaded part has already made its way onto gaming rigs by Alienware, Origin PC, CyberPower and Maingear -- among others.

Prices vary from around $2,600 to $5,000 and beyond depending on your configuration. Alienware, for example, has updated its Area-51 line to include the six-core option with a starting price of $3,000, while Origin PC is offering not just the standard 3.33Ghz clocked version but one that's overclocked all the way up to 4.3Ghz.

This CPU is unnecesssary, even for gaming - a Phenom 965 will give you all the performance you need at a fraction of the price. Sure, Intel is faster, but you don't need it.

Does anyone here actually have, or know someone who has, one of these computers?
It sounds like a good buy (WalMart), and I read the various reviews but of course I have no way of knowing if they are real/true or not.
The sealed liquid cooling, does that mean no maintenance ever?
I do not normally do a lot of internal work/replacement other than upgrading video cards and so the limited upgrades would probably not bother me very much.

Can I upgrade to a Dual Core without replacing everything?? Looking for inexpensive ideas Thanks

I've got a Gateway thats about 3 years old. The chipset is an Intel i845 with 384mb ram. Not much of a gamer, but I like to create & burn DVD's and the system is slow w/ video editing and creating dvd files. I image the problem is the processor as my 3.2 Ghz HT P4 flies when I do this stuff. So...

What I'm wondering is do you think upgrading the processor will help? How good of a processor can I stick in there (or can you show me a place online where I can check it out myself)?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Not long ago I wanted to get my CPU up to 3.7Ghz by O.C. a bit more. However, I kept getting frequent BSOD's with different error messages. So my question is, are the BSOD's coming directly from the unstable overclock or are they coming from something else? I went back to 3.66Ghz and the BSOD's were rare, however I don't think that an O.C. to 3.7Ghz causes instability. I have a great CPU cooler so temps are not an issue.

A:Frequent BSOD's after getting to 3.7Ghz

BSODs are just of the things you'll encounter with an unstable system due to overclocking. So, the BSODs you are encountering is evidence that you still have some tweaking to do in order to get your system to become stable at 3.7 GHz.

Thermalright AX-7
Thermalright SK 7/SLK800 (which is the latest? Im a bit confused)
Swiftech MCX462-U w/ Thermaltake 80mm Smart Fan II

Which would you say would be the one to get? BTW, what are shims for/what do they do?

Thermalright SLK-800, most definitely.

Shims help you from cracking/chipping/breaking the core of your CPU. They offer no special thermal conduction.

the speed of cpus in terms of ghz is almost irrelevant these days.

its all about architecture. a core i7 is probably 1000x faster in terms of speed compared to an atom. arom processors arw low powered portable cpus. i7 is top of the range all out speedy speed.

a 3.2ghz core i5 for example is still much faster than an AMD equivalent at say 4ghz.

a formula 1 car has a 1 .6lt engine, it would be a darn sight faster than any run of the mill 2.5lt+ car!!

Welcome to 3dspotlight forums but please use meaningful non-pleading topics

Does it drop and stay at 30/50? Or just flicker between that and higher levels?
What resolution are you running CS in?
Is this problem only visable in CS?
Do you have antialiasing or antistropic filtering switched on in the OpenGL or DirectX drivers? Infact which are you using in CS?
If your not using OpenGL I suggest trying those.
What motherboard are you using? Is it SDRAM that you have?

When posting problems like this its useful to have the whole picture as strange things like motherboard chipset problems can often be the cause. Without a full picture forum members could run round in circles guessing at what the guilty component is when it would be plainly obvious if we had the complete details...

A:I need a new Processor for a Socket A Current 1.7ghz

With AMD processors, clock speed doesn't matter (there may be no difference between a 1.7GHz and a 2.0GHz), you need to go by the PR rating (i.e. 2500+), if you're going to stick with socketA, then get the highest PR rating you can find (Barton cores are the best performing socket A's)

... but since you are going to replace almost everything else, then i would suggest that you also get a new mobo and go with a socket939 setup instead of an outdated socketA setup.

i think you meant PCI-E, not PCI, all motherboards have PCI, and no socketA motherboard (that I know of at least) has PCI-E.

Ok i know that pentium processors are better than AMD for work related stuff well thats what i got told but i use my AMD for games and i just wanted to know which processor you guys think is better.

AMD Sempron +2400 1.7ghz

Pentium m 1.4ghz

I know some of you might be thinking why im asking because obviously the 1.7ghz is the best but is that true because i ran a program to test CPU and the pentium m won on CPU passmark getting 305 and AMD getting 295 but the AMD won on other tests i have attached the test results to this thread so you can see for yourself.

I guess my real question is how good are AMD sempron processors?

A:AMD sempron +2400 1.7ghz VS Pentium m 1.4ghz

Nothing is better than others OVERALL.

AMD excels at gaming. Pentium wins in video/audio de/en-coding. Also, the chipset plays a role in benchmarking. SiS is no way better than nForce, for example. Like my family's PC, its PC3200 RAM is the same as mine in my PC, but their benchy wins in RAM dept. Their RAM or Intel chipset is better than mine.

I am going to upgrade to a new processor soon and I was just wondering if my motherboard will run a Phenom II processor. It will run a Phenom processor and also Phenom FX, which hasn't even been released yet, so it seems like it would run most new AMD processors.

Here is the motherboard:

A:Will a motherboard that will run Phenom also run Phenom II?

It most propably won't. You will at least need a BIOS update. Actually it will. :O
Go here: search for your motherboard, choose WinXP (or any other, as it doesn't even matter), choose BIOS [BIOS history], choose the latest, 1001, BIOS, download. Then... I'm not sure, but you might need a floppy drive to update the BIOS, though some newer board can be done with a USB drive.

Core 2 Duo wins. It's a much more efficient processor, so even at 1.86ghz, it will be faster than a 3.2 pentium d.

A:AMD A4-5000 "Quad Core" vs Intel Core i3-4005U Dual Core

Hmm, I guess you should read some reviews. But just from the specs the AMD has 6 GB ram instead of 4. Has a DVD burner where the Intel shows no optical drive. It only has W8 8.0 where the Intel has 8.1. But some people may prefer 8.0.

Read reviews. See how each performs. If you don't wish to use it to burn DVD then the optical drive, or lack thereof may not matter to you.

Edit: Oh, and the AMD is about $80 cheaper.

I'm buying a new computer with Vista home premium (32 bit), and I can't decide whether I should get a 2.4 quad core or a faster dual core (since it's cheaper).

I've searched about this but all the results I've got were from 2007, so I'm not sure if things changed much now.

So what do you think? will I benefit from the additional cores? or shall I go with faster dual cores?
appreciate your help

Hi, Currently I'm using a dual core 6850 and I'm thinking about buying a quad core. I have a PSU of 500 W as spare.

Can i replace the CPU to a Quad Core without changing the cooling system?

A:replace dual core CPU by quad core what about heatsink? in Mini Tower 755 Optiplex

These are the specs of the spare PSU. Aren't they better than the original Dell PSU?
That power supply is ATX and not EPS12V
Better is not the issue.  Dell power supplys are 80 percent efficient not 70 percent ATX.  The -5v rail is an issue as well as this may cause a motherboard fire or damage your system.  Its a dead giveaway that this is a power supply from 1990 to 2000.
What current is on which rails is not trivial. There is a single 12V RAIL on that unit and its max is 17A
EPS 12V units have multiple rails of 12V @ 18 amps each.  MAX Power on the 12V rails is 264w not 204w
That unit has a lot more on the 5V and 3.3V rails at the expense of the 12V rails and CPU 4 pin connector. So no that spare unit is not likely to work well if at all.

Recommended update or replacement is EVGA 750B1

Hey all,
I have some proprietary software that works great on a single-core processor. When I try to run it on a dual-core or above, the software loads, works once, and then messes up.

The software uses modems to dial out to our payphones. We found a work-around by turning off one processor in the bios, but then, what's the point of having a dual-core processor.

Please help. The software is doing this on Windows XP.

Hello friends,
I m very eager to know that whats the actual difference between a Core 2 Duo processor and a Pentium Dual Core processor, other than their proceesing architecture?

According to most benchmarking sites including Tom's Hardware, Core 2 Duo E4300 or 6300 performs better than Pentium Dual Core 820 in almost all benchmarks.....whereas C2D E4300 or E6300(1.8 and 1.86 Ghz respectievely) are having MUCH lower clock speeds than Pentium D 820(2.8Ghz). Why like this???

I have 2 systems, one with C2D E4300 1.86 Ghz and another(from which I am writing this thread) is Pentium D 820 2.8Ghz. But I dont see any MUCH performance difference in reality, although in multi-tasking and gaming C2D system still performs better.

Can anybody please explain me in details.....
Thanks in advance.

A:Why Core 2 Duo outperforms Pentium Dual Core even when C2D has lower clock Speed??

The Core 2 Duo doesn't share the same architecture as the older NetBurst architecture of the Pentium D, which is also shared by the Pentium 4. The Pentium D is effectively a pair of Pentium 4 CPUs on one die. The Core 2 Duo architecture allows for a lot more processing to be done in one cycle, hence more information can be pushed in, say, 1 million cycles by the Core 2 Duo than the Pentium D. As for 'reality', there obviously won't be much difference when both systems are used for stuff like playing music etc. But the real differences will show up when you tax them, such as when playing an HD video without a video card supporting HD-decoding where the Core 2 Duo will be able to process information much more quicker than the Pentium D and so you will have a smoother image. Check on Wikipedia for more in-depth details.

I am looking to build my own PC as I can't afford £1,000+ to get someone to make one for me, I will be using it for gaming and communication and a little college work, I will probably be using Bullguard to protect it and OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office with a Win 7 64bit OS.

Bearing this in mind what would be the best Processor for the Intel Core i5 3.4 GHz Quad-Core (BX80637I53570K) Processor and what would be the maximum Memory and Storage I could attach to it? ( I preferably want 8GB of Memory and 1tb of storage ) but I can be flexible.

A:What would be the best motherboard for a Intel Core i5 3.4 GHz Quad-Core (BX80637I53570K) Processor?

The CPU you want is the i5 3570K. That runs on the socket LGA 1155. When you are on a budget, any mid range mobo will suit your needs. Use the savings from the mobo towards a better HDD or even an SSD. You will also need a GPU.

I would recommend the ASUS P8Z77-V LK motherboard. As for RAM, 8GB is enough. As for the HDD, 1TB is great. I recommend the WD Caviar Black 1TB HDD.

Make sure you can get in a GPU.

Out of those 3, the E6300 is the best. Conroe's new architecture is so efficient, that easily outperforms Netburst based CPU´s (P4, PD, Celeron D), and even manages to outperform AMD CPU's.

You can see by yourself HERE. All Conroe CPU's perform excellent. And you can overclock them very easily, and that way, your 1.8GHZ Conroe overclocked to 2000-2400 MHZ will completely trash the other CPU's.

I have two laptops made by the same manufacturer and same year, but one is a dual core laptop with an SSD harddrive and the other is a quad core laptop with a regular hard drive. Both laptops run Windows 8.

I would like to transfer my programs and files from the dual core to the quad core. However, obviously the quad core has different hardware.

I am wondering if I simply remove the SSD from the dual core and put it into the quad core (replacing the quad's primary hard drive with the SSD) and simply boot up the quad core, would that be sufficient? Will the quad core recognize the hardware mismatch and automatically correct the drivers, while keeping my programs and files?

Or is there some other, efficient way to make the transfer? I really want to avoid having to reinstall all my programs.

Thank you

A:Transfer programs and files from Dual Core to Quad Core

There are a lot of third party tools designed to move a Windows installation to new hardware. I prefer using native Windows tool Sysprep for this, mainly because the method is the one and only Microsoft supports and recommends but also because it has never failed me.

The method is described in this tutorial on our sister site the Seven Forums and works also with Windows 8: Windows 7 Installation - Transfer to a New Computer - Windows 7 Help Forums. Method One in tutorial would be ideal for you for moving the SSD to new computer.

Read the information and warnings in the beginning of the tutorial carefully, especially the warning about Windows needing to be reactivated is important. Come back if you have any questions.

Hello Timmah,
Everything is running OK, you drop in the new CPU, then you start getting problems.
Have you double checked all the connections and power leads, plus all the data cables ?.
Is there a Bios update that will address the issue ?, it may be worth checking the MB manufacturers site.
Hope this helps, good luck and post your results.
