Preferred Solution: DVD Burning problem - LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1693S

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

are the DVD-R discs certified to run at your recording speed or higher? you can attempt to lower the recording speed and see if that fixes the problem.

I have a problem with my unit, I can not read the small, 3" dvd used in camcorders. Can you help me??? any special program, driver????

A:Lite-on dvdrw sohw-1633s

Those camcorder discs are formatted in a special code probably created by Sony. You can't read them on a standard CD ROM.Try a Google search for something like "camcorder disc formats"... Or "reading camcorder discs on a PC"

about 3 weeks ago, i posted a problem i've had for many, many months after trying to upgrade my xp-home system to xp-professional. somewhere along the way, something was changed so that now my dvd/cd drive will not operate. no disc will load in or play. my system certifies that the drive is working properly. i even went as far as wiping out everything and reloaded my pc with its factory setting. i still have the problem. there is nothing wrong with the hardware. a friend placed the dvd/cd unit into one of his pc's and it worked fine. something has been changed in my pc that keeps me from being able to use my drive. can anyone help? -bill

Most optical drives have a short life. The more they are used, the shorter the life. When they are moved around, they quickly become out of alignment. Those internal alignments have such narrow tolerances that they can appear to work properly and will usually test ok but the reader and writer cannot work.
Luckily, they can be found for sale cheaply. Try, for instance, where good optical drives can be found for $22 to $29.
We recommend Plextor which is higher priced, then Pioneer, Philips, LG, LiteOn, Samsung, Asus, Toshiba, and very few others.
You might want to avoid Sony Nec, HP, HLDS, HL, Acer, and most others not listed above because they have a shorter life and a longer history of failures.
If you have a laptop, look for Toshiba or Teac.

need to update this driver but cannot find it, i have found info that says it uses microsoft default drivers but where the heck are they? i have been all over microsoft but cant find driver dwnloads for dvd burners. i clicked on the drivers link but still no luck, could someone point me in the right direction for a driver for the LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1633S dvd burner?

Microsoft default drivers means you only need what comes with Windows. So you aren't supposed to need anything else.
What version of Windows are you using and what problem are you having?

I was burning a copy of a dvd earlier and everything went great, then I started to do a second one a little while ago and the trouble started. The drive started making a clicking noise but continued to work then right before 98% it failed. I took out the dvdr and it was rough feeling on the burn side, and the disk was salvageable, I tryed again and the same thing. I troubleshot, but it said it was working properly. I even went to microsoft (LOL) to see if there was any help there, no luck.

I have just installed a new LiteOn DVDRW drive (SOHW-1633S), I noticed when I started my system up that there was no audio. None at all...winamp, WMP or cd. Even the windows sounds are missing. I unplugged the IDE from the dvdrw and rebooted and the audio returned. I have a C-media PCI sound card (CMI8738/C3DX). I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the card and the drivers. I switched the drive from slave to master (with my CDRW) and checked the settings in the BIOS. None of the volume controls seem to be muted, The Speakers only give me a little white noise, which changes volume when the speaker volume is changed. If anyone has any other ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

I can see that a lot of people have had problems with their DVD CD drives and Windows but I couldn't find one like my issue so here goes My DVDRW drive is a Lite-On SHW S A while ago I burned some pictures onto a disk using the Windows burn feature but didn't close DVDRW Lite-On with SHW-1635S Problem drive the session because I wanted to add Problem with Lite-On SHW-1635S DVDRW drive some more pictures later All was well at first - I Problem with Lite-On SHW-1635S DVDRW drive took out the disk and a few days later I put it back in and everything was fine I edited one of the files and then took out the disk That was a couple of weeks ago and I haven't used the drive until yesterday Now when I put the same disk in it says there is no disk inserted The drive itself shows up fine in Device Manager it says the drive Problem with Lite-On SHW-1635S DVDRW drive is enabled the Record tab is there etc but no matter what disk I put in it - DVD CD blank burned retail whatever - it says that there is no disk in the drive Sometimes it tries to read it and the light comes on steady at first then it starts blinking in series of three for a couple of passes and then stops altogether I'm assuming that is some kind of an error indicator but I haven't seen any reference to what that might mean in any of the stuff I've read regarding this problem I found some references here and there about having the correct entries in the registry but I haven't been able to find out what they should be for this drive and the Lite-On website is useless since they only have support for current products I ran the Microsoft Fix-It program and it told me that there was no readable media inserted I tried several different types of disk amp got the same result each time As far as software goes I just got this computer running a little over a month ago and I don't have very much installed on it other than Windows - just Avast Photoshop RealPlayer and the full Office suite I don't have any burning software such as Nero or Roxio installed and I don't have ITunes either so I think I can eliminate those kinds of issues - or maybe not I guess I don't know whether the problem is with the hardware or the software so I'm looking for a little guidance as to what to try next Any input would be greatly appreciated

Hi lizannel,

Welcome to SevenForums.

Your ODD seems to be of 2005 vintage and could have lived its life.

The best you can do is to try cleaning the lense with a CD lense cleaner.

If the problem persists, replace the drive.

yay! first post. please help.

I recently freshly reinstalled XP pro w/ SP2 and suddenly it has completely stopped recognizing my external burner.

I have yet to find why. All of my other devices are recognized fine. I previously had the upgrade version of XP, upgraded from 2K and I had no issues. To my knowledge there should not be any need for any special files and whatnot in order to use this burner.

I have not changed anything physically to the computer since reinstalling either. The only thing special is that my computer is normally used with the asian languages options.

Please help me solve this annoying problem it's wasting valuable burning time -_-'
I've read through the other threads here but they mostly talked about internal burners, but it seems that this is a rather common issue.

Do any other USB devices work in the USB ports? If not you probably need to load Chipset Drivers that came with the motherboard to get the USB ports to work. I had a similar problem and after installing the chipset drivers the USB ports worked.

This happens with diverent burning programs.
It was ok for two weeks and then it stopped. I allready tried some newer and older drivers for it but nothing seems to work.(sorry about my poor english,i am from the Netherlands ;-)

2 days ago, I downloaded a movie (1 Gb) and decided to write it into Verbatim x16 Advanced Azo+ dvd-r. Burn process started, went for 2% and then I was informed that "burn process failed".
My actions:
1) upgraded firmware from manufacturer's site. Tried to burn dvd - nothing
2) asked Verbatim's and Lite-on's support - no answer for 4 days.
3) ran disk defrag
4) checked for spyware (Lavasoft Adaware)
5) ran virus scan (Nod32)
6) checked for device conflicts: no conflicts in device manager.
7- i succeeded in writing to Acme dvd+r x16, but on my PC it shows no content.

I can play a sound dvd with no problems but when I try to play a dvd with both video and sound, all I get is the video without the sound.

I have tried to find a driver for the dvdrw player but have not found an actual link leading to an actual download. I found a lot of links that looked like they would lead to a download for the driver but all I got was taken to other pages. If the driver is the problem, can someone give me an actual link to an actual download.

The dvdrw player is a Lite-On DVDRW SHW-160P6S. According to the data in My Computer the current driver is by MS, date was 7/1/2001, and the version is 5.5.2535.0

I just installed a LiteOn 1693S DVD Dual Layer Burner in my computer. It burns DVDs fine, but it will not open them. I've tried double clicking on the icon in My Computer and right clicking open. Neither will work. It doesn't work with Auto-Play either. In My Computer, it says it is a DVD-RW Drive. When you put a DVD, the icon goes to a CD icon with DVD-ROM by it.

Does anyone know what is wrong?

I have recently had to buy basically all new components for a computer which were
Graphics Card

The problem is, is that when I try and burn a CD or DVD with my CDRW or my DVDRW drive(which worked perfectly before in my old PC) they only get to a certain percentage and then stop, however the elapsed time keeps on going so the program doesn't crash. Also depending on the size of the thing you are trying to download depends on the percentage it gets to, so say I burn something really small it may get to 50% and if I burn the same thing again it always gets up to the same percentage. I have tried:
Reinstalling Windows
Different Makes Of Disk
Burning At Different Speeds
Just Plugging In My CDRW And Not My DVDRW drive
Using Different Software

If anyone knows how to fix it could you please tell me

looks ok. When I put a DVDR in windows explorer shows
CD Drive then when I remove it, it shows DVD RAM drive.

I use Nero,Gburner and EZ cd creator.
I tried dvd -r +r, and duallayer dvds.

All of them do not recognize that
I have a dvdr. Gburner BURN option is grayed out and NERO
does not see the DVDR and wants to convert it to a .nrg file!

I cant burn anything. Do I have a virus. I virus scanned and came

If you were to spend $20 and purchase a IDE/LaptopIDE/SATA <->USB adapter, you could do a bit more testing with the drive.

I suggest trying the drive in another system. If the problem follows the drive, its likely that its a hardware problem with the drive.

You can also check with the drive manufacturer and download a new ROM for the device, if they have one available. ROM updates and help with problems such as you have described.

You can check the event log (start->control panel->administrative tools->event viewer) and also your burning application may have log files to consult. Error entries in these logs may give you a clue as to what is actually going on.

My CD/DVDRW is playing up and I can't complete the burn process on a CD I'm creating.
Sometimes it stops at the start of the burn proces and sometimes it stops towards the end. The same message keeps appearing 'Invalid address for write' but I'm unsure what this means.
On one occasion it did finish the burn process but nothing was wriytten to the disc

What info do you guys require from me in order to investigate this problem? Do I have to update my firmware? are there any programs that would be able to disagnose this problem?

Guys, a real basic question. I am looking at buying a new machine and have a choice of DVDRW/CDRW or DVDRW. The CD write and read speed (16 and 24) appears alot quicker than the DVD write and read speed (4 and 8). Is this a true comparison i.e. the CD reads 4 times quicker than the DVD or am I missing something. Will be using the laptop for a lot of CD reading for itunes and this is an important factor in my decision. All guidance appreciated. Cheers.

A:DVDRW/CDRW 'v' DVDRW Whats the difference between the read and write speeds???

Personally i would opt for the DVDRW/CDRW combo drive as it will give you the most burning options for backing up data/music.
If you are going to have an empty bay i would get a plain old CDR to play music on as they are dirt cheap now.
Reason being is burners run a lot hotter and i only use them strictly for burn projects. They will play your music fine but why subject them to the wear if not needed. After all their not as cheap to replace. My CDR is 54x and about 4 years old and still ticking. I found out the hard way about wearing out a burner.

You might 1st try Fix It here;

If that doesn't work try this.

If neither of the above work, do this.

Is the drive displayed in device manager?

If so, uninstall the drive. Reboot the machine and see if Windows finds the drive and reinstalls it. If Windows doesn't find and reinstall the drive, it is very likely a dead drive.

Check the Event Viewer for related errors (run eventvwr.msc)

Typically these would be Atapi or Disk errors.

Also open the Device Manager (devmgmt.msc) and look under IDE ATA/ATAP for the channel on which these devices are installed. Probably the secondary.

Look at the Advanced tab.

You want to see Ultra DMA Mode 2 at a minimum for the "current transfer mode".

If it is less than that, select the driver tab, uninstall it and reboot -- then check again.

If nothing here appears relevant, I would suspect the issue lies with some burning or related software for the devices.

Ok, I bought a new computer in March against my instinct, getting one that runs Vista. The DVDRW drive worked for a couple months or so, but then kept coming up with the same error. When checking Hardware Profiles, it tells me that the driver failed to load, and is either corrupt or missing. I keep telling it to reinstall the driver, and it fails to install. I went to the company's website, downloaded their driver, and it told me that I don't have that drive, yet my computer tells me I do, just no driver. I know it's the right driver, but nothing I've tried works. I don't know what all you need in the way of information to help me, but just ask and I'll try to provide it. Windows will not always identify blank media, nor will it always identify a drive properly...when i put a regular CD into my DVD burner Windows ID's that drive as a CDRom. This is common.
Your burning software however should have the capacity to identify blank media properly.

I have a Liteon DVD-16 DVD-ROM, which has been working fine for almost 8 months now. But today, it gave me a problem.

I was trying to copy a CD from it to a Plextor CD-RW using Easy CD Creator 4. The program was scanning the CD, but the DVD-ROM was not running. After a while, I cancelled the operation and closed Easy CD Creator (had to use End Task). After that, the DVD-ROM light started flashing. Windows could detect the DVD-ROM, but not the CD in the drive. I had to reboot the computer to eject the CD.

Now if I put in a CD, the DVD-ROM will make some small running noise or none at all, start blinking, and then Windows will freeze. I can't even use CTRL-ALT-DEL; I have to reboot the computer. I tried removing the device and having Windows reinstall it, but the problem continues. Any suggestions?

i'm no expert i got a 1633s a few weeks ago. try these basic steps. do a clean install of nero, using the clean up tools from the nero website. then reinstall nero. download the lastest updates and install them eg i found nero vision 2 a pain but version 3 works fine. there have been various updates released in the past week. finally install the latest firmware for your writer from the liteon website. forget lite-on's recommended media i found that my lite-on writer doesnt like ritek based discs and most suppliers have told me to avoid ritek.
i have had problems converting avi files and burning direct to dvd-r. nero fails to finalise the disc. to solve this i burn to a mitsubishi 2x dvd-rw and then copy this resultant dvd to a dvd-r, takes about 25 minutes extra time but no coasters. i found verbatim media works best. if you are in the uk you could try a trial pack of 12 discs from........

i uninstalled and reinstalled kazaa lite v2.4.1 and i had files being downloaded while i was uninstaling. I still have the DAT files in my shared folder.

How do i get those files to start downloading again?

because i dont want to have to redownload the files again.

A:Kazaa Lite Problem

Just Redownload the files, it doesn't really matter unless of course you have 56k which begs the question, "why would you be downloading in the first place?"

Has anyone had a problem with Diskeeper Lite leaving anywhere between 3 to 70 fragmented files? Running it several time doesn't get rid of them either. I found a work around by uninstalling Diskeeper Lite ..and deleting the Executive software folder from the programs folder..then running the original defragging program that came with Windows XP in safe mode...and then reinstalling Diskeeper lite and then running it and then it will come back with 0 fragmented files. Jumping thru the hoops to get it cleaned is a chore.. so any help will be appreciated

Can someone help me..when i d/l files off kazaa (mainly music) it wills how as being complete..yet when i look in my "my shared" folder the file will appear as a .dat file...why is this?

A:kazaa lite problem

it sounds like the file was corrupted in some why when it was being downloaded. You may want to try to delete the .dat file and download it again.

After I reinstalled xp sp2 I lost the ability to open, copy or write any files on this drive. Whichever disc I put in the message says:"disc contains read only files". It also shows that every rw cd is full and there is no space left(even for completely empty ones). My other drive(dvd-rw) is working fine. I reinstalled the driver few times but nothing changed. Could I change something in settings to make this thing work?

hi, i'm new to these forums, and i need help configuring kazaa lite. i had an old version, and i just upgraded, but it won't connect. my old one connected just fine, but now this new version is giving me headaches. what could be wrong? am i not opening up the right port or something? and if not, how do i do that? thanks in advance.

A:Kazaa lite problem

Hi jinger_angel,welcome to the forum, just what is the problem you are experiencing? are you saying it just sits there and doesnt connect you to Kazaalite? because it should do that automatically, usually after just a few seconds, and you dont need to do anything for it to do that, what version have you updated to? ........ The reason I am asking is that there are a few problems with the site at the moment and you may have a corrupted download, the new version of Kazaalite 2.1.1 is due out very shortly according to the site and it may be better waiting for that

Okay I downloaded this video called Friends-401-The one with the Jellyfish and I read the description. It says that its 22 minutes long. I finish downloading and I start to watch it and it is just some spiral design in the backround moving around and you can still hear it. Also somehow the video is 115 minutes long after I download and the description says 21:??. What codecs can I download to fix this. I already downloaded a bunch because every other video I have works fine. Please help.

Okay, my problem is that Kazaa Lite will not download anything. What happens is I can connect to Kazaa Lite, find files and get them so they appear in the 'traffic' area. However, the file won't download. I have no porblems with my firewall, I wiped my compy clean of spyware and viruses, and I have all the files in the right places. What am I doing wrong?

How are you doing this? There is no need to "install" anything. Just connect it, making sure that the jumpers are set correctly.

How are you connecting the drive (channel, master or slave)? Do you have both IDE channels enabled? Is it visible in BIOS setup?

I just bought this LiteOn DVD burner and it came with nero. I installed nero and the dvd burner software and updated both, then tried burning a movie to a verbatim dvd-r. Everything goes fine until it gets to the point where it says "Writing lead-in." It then makes no further progress and after about 10 minutes a error message pops up that says:

Burn Process Failed!
An error log file was created that can be very helpful in diagnosing problems. Would you like the save it?

Any suggestions?

I don't think kazaa can work behind a proxy becuase it needs to show your IP address. If you block your IP, then no-one on the network can see you and you won't be able to connect.

As soon as I put in a blank media it changes to "CD Drive F" and if I click on it I get the error "F is not acessable" I tried 3 different kinds of CD's and a DVD and they all do the same thing. I flashed the firmware .. and nothings changed?

Blank Media has no identifers or filesystem for windows to recognize.
You should only be concerned that windows recognizes what is on that media after it is formatted (RW media) or some data / music / movies are copied to 'write once media'

I downloaded/setup WinAmp 5.03a Lite, and have it set so I can download/play MP3's off the web. HOWEVER -- Winamp is NOT listed in the ZoneAlarm (Freewarre Version) "Program Control" list which I presume leave's a hole for Virii or Trojans.
How do I get ZoneAlarm (Freeware) to put WinAmp in its "Program Control" list?

A:WinAmp 5.03a Lite, & ZoneAlarm Freeware Problem

winamp needs to access the net - or try before u can add to zonealarms list.

Try and play a media file online & if winamp5 is the app defaulted to play - zonealarm should offer its usual request at wich time winamp will be added to the list.

I think thats right
