I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

good luck. Generally motherboard parts are not repairable. You might find a willing shop to resolder or glue the broken part back.

I am building a computer for my first time and after choosing a motherboard, have no idea what RAM to buy. I know that I want 8 gigs of RAM, and the motherboard has slots for 4 RAM cards, but I don't know how to figure out how many pins should be on the RAM that I buy. The motherboard that I chose is an MSI ATX DDR3 2133 Motherboard 970. I would prefer a RAM card from Corsair, but thats just personal preference, not necessity. Help anyone?

Also, in case you need more info about my motherboard, I got it at this URL: http://www.amazon.com/MSI-DDR3-Moth..._n_feature_keywords_two_browse-bin:6159420011

A:What RAM should I purchase?

As described in the motherboard description - Memory: 4x DDR3-2133(OC)/ 1866/ 1600/ 1333/ 1066 DIMM Slots, Dual Channel, Max Capacity of 32GB.

This means your motherboard takes DDR3 memory. When an OC follows a number it means that in order for you to run 2133 memory you must overclock, I.e. add more voltage to get it to function at this speed. This is something you don't have to concern yourself with.

Before we move forward why this motherboard? Here are 2 questions that will help you in the process of building a PC:

1. What do you want your system to do?
2. What is your budget?

My Dell has been acting up pretty recently (6 months old and still under warranty), and the battery does not charge past 80%. Once it get's near the 80% charge, it immediately fills up to 100%.

I've remembered using the laptop for more than 6 hours under moderate use but now it barely lasts 2 hours.

Please give me some advice because I'm really dependent on this laptop.

I've been having an issue which started this morning. The previous night, I forgot to plug in my Dell Inspiron N5050 after using it. I woke up to find that my battery had died (obviously). I plugged in the laptop, running Windows 7 HE 64 bit, and turned it on. It booted normally and I was able to do all of my tasks as needed. Then I noticed my problem. The battery icon down on the taskbar showed that the device was plugged in, but was not charging. It has stayed at a constant 2% charge for more than 24 hours now. The Battery Meter stated that my battery is performing normally, so I ruled the battery out as the cause. The adapter I am using is the default one that came with the laptop when I bought it, and it appears to be functioning normally as well. What could be the cause of this incident, and what can I do to fix it?

A:Battery Stated as "Plugged in, Not Charging"

Most likely you have a bad battery. Dell has had whole series of batteries that they shipped out in a not fully functional state. I have an HP laptop (about 8 years old now) that the battery took a "steamy one" and it will no longer charge properly. You can try this trick (it may not work, but worth a try because did work for me a couple times): power down laptop and take the battery out for 30 minutes; replace battery and plug in charger but do not power on; wait 4 hours of charge and power on. I had it work a couple times that it gave a full 100% charge. Again, if it doesn't work then sorry, but at least you tried.

Hi you all!

I have an Asus Laptop, last generation i7, 8gb... almost nice. Code: N550LF

Problem: I have to work all day with my laptop, with graphic software and so on.
Almost 10/12 hours or more per day. In my old Dell (I had it for 5 years) I changed for this reason the battery every year.
It is extremely important for my work, even if not everyone cares about battery.

Requested solution: what can I do to preserve (as much as possible) the battery?

What others said: A friend of mine told me to always plug in the computer, because the computer doesn't charge the battery when it is full. In this way I can preserve the battery.
The Asus website doesn't give any advice about it.
The official support by mail told me to not plug the battery when it is 100% charged. This could be dangerous. So, no way to preserve it.

And in your opinion?

Thank you in advance

A:Battery advice

Batteries these days like to stay between 20% and 90% charge.
Leaving the laptop/device plugged in when it reaches 100% does no damage, as most devices have an automatic charge cut-off. So you won't over-charge your batteries.
The problem is, that you're keeping the battery between 98-100% charge all the time, when this is not a sweet spot for the battery at all. It will degrade very slightly faster.
Therefore, in order to keep maximum battery life, keep battery between 20-90% charge.

Hi,

I have been trying to find a replacement battery for my HP G70 laptop. On the old battery it says to replace with battery 485041-003 but there doesn't seem to be any HP batteries and the names on the batteries and, indeed, the companies who are selling them, are companies that I have never heard of. I have looked at the reviews for most of them and there are mixed renews but a lot saying the batteries do not last as long as the old one. Given that anyone can set up a ficticious company and call it co.uk, which company in the UK do you recommend?

I have an Acer laptop I bought last January Wear? Minimize Battery It s a Minimize Battery Wear? month laptop and someone told me that I should be removing the battery when I am using AC power I was hesitant at first so I installed a software called BatteryBar Pro Upon installing I was surprised that my battery wear was already at Minimize Battery Wear? I was surprised that I had already wore of my battery in just months Now I am worried that it will not last longer as expected I use my laptop for coding gaming and browsing mostly on gaming and I always run on AC power while the battery is plugged in I tried some suggestions like removing the battery while on AC but when I did my laptop did not power up It does not open if the battery is out and AC is plugged in I always put my laptop on an elevated stand I constructed when using it but is this enough Are there any other ways to minimize my battery wear Thank you nbsp

A:Minimize Battery Wear?

If your laptop allows you to, some laptops have an option to confine the battery to between 20% and 85% or something. That'll reduce wear if you can enable that. It'll also help if you manually do that as well.

Li-Ion/LiPo "wear" is well documented and the causes are well known for consumer chemistries.
Storing at high temperatures will increase degradation.
Storing at 4.2v/cell (fully charged) will increase degradation.
Keeping it below ~3.0v/cell (discharged) will degrade it.

So, in general, spend as little time as possible depleted or fully charged. If you fully charge it before leaving for the day, then start using it within a few hours, the wear is very minimal so you shouldn't worry about fully charging it if you're planning on using it soon, just don't store it for long periods fully charged.
Likewise if you leave it fully depleted for a long while, that will also accelerate wear.

If you need to store it, 40% charge (3.85v/cell) is commonly recommended but there is very little difference between storing it between 20% and 80% charge. Again the only times that storage can heavily degrade the battery is if it's fully charged (4.2v) or fully discharged (<3.3v resting)

Hey everyone I have an old laptop with a battery that lasts about h in quot Power Saving quot mode I m going to be stuck next week for about hours at a location with few available public outlets and need to stretch my battery life as much as possible I ve already for battery to Looking life extend ways "techie" done the obvious generic tips of quot defragging the hard drive quot quot dimming the screen quot quot using few no external devices quot quot tweaking my power usage settings quot etc but it s not enough I m looking for some good quot techie quot solutions now like quot underclocking the CPU quot or quot removing the CD drive quot All suggestions are appreciated I d love to try to squeeze another hours out of this battery if possible no I don t have another battery and don t need to buy one just for this one event Thx PS Another idea Removing HDD and booting from USB Flash drive nbsp

A:Looking for "techie" ways to extend battery life

Removing the HDD and booting from a flash drive is probably the worst decision you can make. Flash drives have very slow speeds (even though they are flash memory, they arent fast) and very little capacity. Keep the HDD.

There are only a few more ways to improve battery life other than dimming your screen and adjusting the power usage settings. Under-clocking the CPU is really done by the "power saving" mode.

Try these suggestions:
1) Run this tool: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_battery_power_settings
2) Turn of your network adapter. There is usually a switch on the side of the PC that toggles the network adapter on and off. That will save you a ton of power. Also make sure bluetooth is off. I dont think your older PC will have it, but just make sure.
3) Use this tool to remove any unnecessary processes from start up. This will speed up your computer while also reducing the amount of processes that run (thus reducing CPU and RAM usage).

I can suggest other options, I just need your OS. If it is Windows 7, it is easy too, if it is XP, I cant really help there since I forgot the OS.

Not sure if this is the right forum thread to post this. I'm replacing an Hp Pavillion P6597C and don't know what to purchase or where to purchase it from. I loved my Pavillion but it's crashed on me three times it's first year and again a few weeks ago under the extended warranty.

I'm not a gamer, but do work from home on my computer daily. All my printers are Hp as well as my laptop. I've contacted Tiger Direct and they've recommended an Hp Compaq Elite 8300 (item H24-2406), plus they had a Gateway that was comparable, but I've heard pros and cons about Gateway. A former boss of mine recommended I contact Newegg and PC Mall for pricing too.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. I'm told I should stick with at least 6GB and either an i5 (or i7) processor.

Thanks!

A:Recommendations on where to purchase a new desktop?

This forum is all about how to get the most out of your computing experience and we're always happy to help anyone to accomplish this, whatever their budget or intended use. We usually recommend building your own, because for the same money you'll have a better PC, with more reliable parts and a clear upgrade path. But not everyone has the time or confidence to pull it off, so for them a pre-built OEM system is the only viable option. If this describes your situation, then by all means you should go that route. But first, you should know this; the Elite 8300 and most other systems like it are built with proprietary power supplies and motherboards, so you're stuck with the cheap 320 watt power supply (but not cheap if you have to buy one from HP), and the motherboard doesn't even seem to have a standard 24 pin connector. If you click this link you'll see what I mean - http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c03612799/c03612799.pdf
There are OEMs that build with standard ATX parts, such as these - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2023376&Sku=SYX-1112 RF
http://www.ibuypower.com/lobby.aspx
I ran the ibuypower system configurator for a system geared towards your needs, and this is a screenshot of the result -

A little more than $600, but much better all around. Go to ibuypower.com and try the configurator yourself, the options are extensive, and you can easily configure a system for $600 if that's you budget cap. I started by clicking on the "Intel Z77 i5/i7 $959" button, but you could also click on "Intel Z77 i5 $719".
EDIT - I didn't include an operating system, so if you need one, be sure to select it in the configurator.
If you do decide to build your own, let me know and I'll help you choose components. Good luck!

Hello,
I am going to purchase a new dell laptop, so what are the basic points that should be kept in mind while purchasing it??
I am purchasig this laptop for the general purpose use at my home.
So, please give me some suggestions...

A:What are the basic points to purchase a laptop

Personally, there are just two things to be mindful of for me: SSD and IPS!
Everything else is secondary and for home use most things will work fine anyway and the ssd would be the biggest bottleneck IMO.

Hi;
I have a 11yr old Dell Inspiron 8100 Notebook computer. It started shutting down mysteriously while working, and sometimes shuts down a second or two after powering on.
I was planning to scrap the thing, maybe try to sell it for parts on Ebay, but decided to take one more look.
Today I found that the CMOS battery (reserve battery) is bad. It is leaking but has not damaged anything.
Could the fact that this battery is bad (maybe shorted) cause the computer to shut down as I described?
Since I have the whole thing dis-assembled I can replace the battery easily. I found them on Ebay but not sure I should buy one there, since it could be an old battery that is no good.
Any ideas?

Thanks

FW

A:Can bad CMOS battery cause laptop to shut down?

The CPU cooling fan may be worn out and the thermal pads and paste may be seriously burned and dried out. I doubt if the laptop parts would be worth much because of the age...

How old is the HP? If its been a few years since you bought it, you might try re calibrating the battery from the BIOS, most HP and Gateway computers have a utility inside the BIOS for calibrating the battery. If not, let me know and I'll see if I can find one.

Hi friends

Mine PC is running on a AMD quardracore, Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H, 4 GB DDR III 1600 Mhz Corsair Ram & Power supply along with 8400 GT nvidia . This PC has been OC to 3.2 ghz and is currently working at 3.2 ghz.

Recently I was getting BIOS notification to change the battery as everytime the BIOS had to be reset.

I changed the battery 3 days back but again after a day I again started getting the same notification of changing the battery.

Pls tell where could be the problem.

Regards

A:CMOS battery problem

Was the battery you replaced the bad one with brand new? Also make sure it is a 3V battery and to be safe, make sure it has the markings 'CR2032" on it (that is what mine has). Other batteries of the same size and voltage MAY be fine, but I can't really vouch for them. Also, if you have one, it might pay to check the batteries voltage with a multimeter.

Also, if you buy a new one, it might pay to make sure that it is meant for a computers motherboard, as some may or may not be, just to be on the safe side. I don't really know a great deal about these batteries.

I recently purchased an Asus N56V Series laptop. The laptop has impressive specs, including an i7 Core and a Nvidia GT 635M graphics adaptor, so I can understand it having a below average battery life. However, I am only getting 1 to 2 hours of battery life on it, even when I am not running processor and graphic intensive programs. Product review indicate that will battery life for this laptop is below average, the battery should still last 4 hours under normal conditions.

Is there any reason why my battery life is so limited? Has anyone else had similar problems with this model of laptop?

Thanks for the help.

I will plug in the power cord and try to boot with the battery in and nothing will happen. If I reach under the laptop and remove the battery and then try to boot up it comes on like normal. I can then put the battery back in but it makes no difference after that. The battery is completely dead. Does anyone know if this is a common problem with a bad battery or what. The computer is a Dell Latitude D630. If I knew that putting a good new battery in it would fix it I would without hesitation I just need to know if that is the problem or is it another glitch. If anyone knows the answer I would appreciate if they would pass it on. Thanks

Aye, maties!

I'm planning on getting my self a good netbook for my campus stuff. Here's the criteria:

1) With anything low on power usage (like the Atom), of course. Need the battery life. But something powerful enough to compile a Python code.
2) SSD. I'm usually not that clumsy, but for the occasional drop, I'd prefer something that doesn't have moving parts. Oh well, admitted, I just want the speed more.
3) Atleast wi-fi. My college has it, so I'll leech it.
4) Preferably no OEM OS installed. Recently-converted Linux lover (blame Leeky ) , so will arm it with my Backbox, but don't want to waste the Windows (likely) installation's warranty. Dual-booting a last resort.

Budget is upto $240 (USD). Hard-set, unfortunately. Ready for compromises.

Any recommendations?

A:Netbook purchase recommendations

I personally like Toshiba's line of Netbooks, we use one at home for a media center and it's quite nice. Although given your budget, I think you'll struggle to find something with Ivy and SSD at that price. That's what Ultrabooks are for, afterall

Something like this:

http://us.toshiba.com/computers/laptops/mini-notebook/NB500/NB505-N508BL

Only has second generation in it (Atom N455) but still a quality little machine. Second gen is still nice. You could always pop out the HDD and put your own SSD in at a later time when budget allows.

Others might have had experiences with other brand netbooks, but I've liked Toshiba's NB series since they launched. I play old games on mine all the time too, Like Fallout 1/2

Hope I'm not rambling at that this helps or gives you an idea. 30 dollars more than your budget too..

Hopefully one of you guys can explain something for me. I have fitted a new battery to my Toshiba laptop and since fitting it the keyboard and mousepad refuse to work. If I plug in a USB mouse that works OK but still no keyboard. If I boot into safe mode everything runs OK.
I took out the battery and ran just on mains and everything runs fine and cpu is back to normal, putting the old battery in also enables the laptop to run OK.
Thinking the high cpu usage might be malware I ran Malwarebytes and Combofix but they found nothing.
Has anyone any suggestions as to why the new battery is giving these issues, never had any problems with other batteries I have fitted to laptops.

There are LOTS of problems with new laptop batteries... one study reports anywhere from 6% to 11% of China batteries are unreliable or defective. you have no idea how long it has been sitting on the shelf or in a warehouse box in some shipping point.

I currently have a Lenovo laptop and have had it for 2 and a half years. The battery has always been pretty bad and last about 3 minutes unplugged. The hard drive is a temperamental one from an old laptop as the original broke for no apparent reason, probably didn't help I was constantly having to rebuild it too. I know it is stupid but when I got this laptop I was young and naive and didn't realise how essential recovery disks are.
I realise to replace all of these would be quite expensive so am wondering whether it is worth just buying a new laptop?

A:Worth replacing the hard drive, battery and buying recovery disks?

We need more information to comment.
There are at least 7 levels of Lenovo laptop... Is this a T-series... or just what is it? model and type.
In general, Lenovo laptops are among the most reliable...
This is not a good time to buy hard drives, due to the market over-adjusting to the hard drive factories under water in Thailand.
Batteries, good ones, can be found for $35 to $45
But you can get a 90 GB SATA hard drive for $90 or less.
Tell us the hard drive brand and size, the amount of memory installed.
All in all, we can rebuild a decent Lenovo for $140... and that is a lot less expensive than a new laptop. But a shop would have to charge you $205 or more.
A cheap laptop might cost you $500 to $600, but a good laptop could cost you $1200 to $1800. For long term reliability, I would want to invest at least $1000 to $1500

Tell us more so we can best advise you.

A:How to prolong your battery's life

Where did you get this information? Some of it I'd agree with, others I don't. It also reads like a post you copy pasted into lots of places around the internet - however a quick googling didn't return anything.

1.Store battery :
Put your batteries in a cool and dry place when you store it.
Yes, that is generally good practice for lots of things.

Do not charge your lithum batteries too full before storage.
Ok, no prob here either, although saying that doing so can decrease overall capacity of the battery would have made it a better statement.

After using the laptop battery ,please clean up the metal terminals with a soft dry clean cloth.
So, I should take the battery out of my laptop every time I've used the laptop while not plugged in. This is not practical on some laptops and ultrabooks, nor does it seem necessary since I have never seen a corroded laptop battery.

Before storage, you should confirm your is not fully depleted. If empty, charge for about 30 minutes . Usually a lithium-ion battery should be stored at about 40% state-of-charge.
I've seen 50% thrown around, but I'll accept 40%.

The suitable storage temperature for batteries is around 15°C
Ok. Haven't heard this, but I suppose it makes sense.

Please notice this: weak batteries charge faster and remain on 'ready' indicator longer than strong ones. Also it only be used for a short time.So do not buy a used battery even if it is very cheap because used battery usually means weak battery.
This is confusing. Should define "weak". What does "remain on 'ready' indicator longer than strong ones" mean? Why would this happen? There are programs like BatteryCare for Windows and Coconut Battery for OS X that you could use to get information on a used battery before purchasing. Its possible with those tools to make an informed decision on whether or not the battery is worth the price. Simply dismissing the possibility of purchasing a used battery is lazy.

2.Charge battery :
Most battery can be fully charged in about 3 hours so do not leave a battery in a charger for a long time.
Are we still talking about laptop lithium batteries? They are intelligently charged based on circuitry in the battery pack to charge without overcharging, leaving in longer will not damage. A majority of battery chargers for NiCD, NiMH, and NiZn sold in the last 5+ years are also smart chargers and would stop charging once they sense a (typically) 0.01V decrease. Basically overcharging isn't a problem today.

When you prepare to charge your battery ,make sure the temperature is around the room temperature.
Makes sense.

Especially need to pay attention is avoid over-charging and over-discharging.
See above.

Do not charged to higher voltages than its threshold voltage ,as it would become unsafe.
As I said above, things are charged on smart chargers now, this isn't going to happen. It seems that starting with your #2 section you are mixing up laptop batteries and regular rechargable batteries like you use in a flashlight.

Prepare a new battery for replacement if your battery get weak over time.
Ok. Or you could just continue to use it, laptop batteries are expensive. If someone needed to get 5+ hours and now they can't, then of course they'll buy a replacement, don't think they need to be told to do so.

Please notice this: It is not very distinct to reduce the charge time by increasing the charge current .
What? Again, possibly talking about other types of batteries than lithium laptop batteries, but even at that I think you used a wrong word or two.

3.Maintain battery :
Rechargeable batteries do not break suddenly but slowly get powerless over time.
All? NiZn batteries have been known to "break" suddenly and not be able to be recharged. Lead Acid batteries in cars often start a car just fine, then the next attempt at... Read more

A:Looking to purchase mobile gaming/work laptop

Blantantly ripped-off from two sources with modifications but it does the job:
1) What is your budget?

2) What size notebook would you prefer?

a. Netbook; 10? screen or less
b. Ultraportable; 11" - 12? screen
c. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
d. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
e. Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen
3) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?

a. Like:
b. Dislike:
4) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?

5) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?

6) What other games will you be playing besides SC2?

7) How many hours of battery life do you need?

8) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?

9) What screen resolution(s) would you prefer? Keep in mind screen size in conjunction with resolution will play a large role in overall viewing comfort level.

10) Do you want a Glossy/reflective screen or a Matte/non-glossy screen?

11) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?

12) When are you buying this laptop?

13) How long do you want this laptop to last?

14) How much hard drive space do you need; 80GB to 640GB? Do you want a SSD drive?

15) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?

looks pretty good. I would probably go with the GIGABYTE GA-Z68XP-UD3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard and Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s hard drive If I was building it but the hardware you selected is fine. Those are mostly personal preferences. I've always preferred gigabyte motherboards although I've heard most of the newer ASRock boards are decent (ASRock is owned by ASUS). The HDD I listed should improve performance since it has 64 mb cache and supports SATA 6gbps although it does cost $30 more.

I'm on the market for something mobile but I have a few questions.

I spend a lot of time using photoshop and dreamweaver. is 14" too small for production work?

Am I missing anything if I dont go for a 17" laptop, besides the obvious weight decrease?

I play some games every so often. SC II, Rift.

budget=1800.00usd. Doesn't have to max out my budget but it has to look good and do the things I need.

Please don't include anything made by apple

In my personal experience with Dell Inspiron E1505 ( 6400 ), it was so horrible that it kept killing my first, second and third power adapter for the laptop. Dell aren't that bad, except they're notoriously ignoring on improving the life of the power adapters, let alone of customers buying the $25 - $80 for new adapter once in every 3 - 6 months.

I do used the photoshop and lots of frontpage on that laptop, and i know for surely doing these things on 14" will be little too small for me. Have you considered Lenovo's or Toshiba? They're very solid and very reliable laptops than anything I touched in the past.

I have a new 12 cell battery for my acer 5535. Computer beeps a warning and shuts back down on start-up. Incorrect battery message. battery is a 12 cell, 10400mAh, AS09A41. The battery is made for an Acer 5517-5535. Does something need to be re-configured in the computer to accept the battery? The battery will run the computer if the computer is plugged in to the AC first and then the battery is installed, then unplugged from the wall. Both batteries are 11.1v

A user brought me her laptop (an Acer Aspire 4520) for start up speed issues. While dealing with that I noticed that after shut down, I couldn't power the machine back up by pressing the power button. I have to unplug the power chord and then I can power the machine up. Also, if the machine is in sleep mode the power button doesn't wake it whether it's plugged in or not. You have to unplug it AND pull the battery to bring it back to a state where it will power up.

I've tried every configuration provided to me be Vista to configure the power button behavior in the CP but no luck...

This is a Dell Latitude laptop with Windows XP
I let the battery die on it and when i plugged it in the next morning to turn it on I get that error message. I tried taking out the hard drive and putting it back in. The BIOS is not seeing any hard drive. It reads "<none>"
I am not sure if the battery discharging has anything to do with it or not.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

A:Internal hard disk drive not found after battery discharge

Faulty HDD Controller but I would have that laptop check out if you can. Most likely it's the MOBO that is to blame. MOBO = Motherboard. See if that was XP not seeing the HDD then you could re-install XP. But you said your BIOS is not seeing the HDD. It could also be your HDD as failed. Normally DELL has a tool that you run to test your system out. This tool is use by DELL Certified Techs to see where your issue is. HDD, MOBO, Battery. Most of the time the MOBO is replaced. Then HDD then the Battery to solve your issue.

A:Lenovo G560 battery charges but laptop won't run on it

The battery contacts could be corroded by the spilled water. It takes time for this corrosion to develop so that's why the time that the laptop worked. The water could have affected other internal circuits too over time. The laptop needs to be opened up and inspected

A:Laptop battery issuie

The first quick fix that I would recommend, as to see if we can get your battery to charge is this. Take your battery in your hand, carefully inspect the gold tipped connector points, where the battery makes it's electrical connection to the lap top. Inspect those ends, see if they have any dirt, dust, film or build up on them, if they don't shine as bright as a new penny, you then might want to clean of the end connectors. Take some rubbing alcohol, a couple q-tips, and carefully clean the tips off, allow 10-15 minutes to dry and then hook the battery back up to the lap top and see if it starts charging.

There's a couple more quick fixes up my sleeve, but I just want to see if this first one will do the trick.

Please let us know if this works or not!

Good luck.................

I'm a college student (58 years old). I'm in the market to purchase a moderately priced lap top. It needs to have windows 7, MS Word, Outlook, and excel. The system will not need a large hard drive. Will not need to have a high end video card. Initially I will be using the system only for my studies (no gaming) after graduation I would like it to be capable to make transition into a Master Automotive Technicians lifestyle complete with it being able to plug into vehicle OBD II scan tools. Can anyone steer me in the right direction as to a good laptop?

A:Student wishes to purchase laptop

All ODB II scan tools are not the same. I don't have extensive knowledge of all of them but some will connect to PCs via USB while some use a serial port. I have a couple of Equus hand held OBD II scanners and they both connect to the PC with a serial connector. Many of the desktops I've built for myself have a serial port or have a serial (COM) port header on the mobo or can be fitted with one so that's not a problem for me but a laptop might be a different story. I would imagine not many have a serial port anymore but some might still. Of course, there are USB to serial port adapters available so that might be an option as well.

While I don't know enough about laptops to recommend one, just be aware of the different scan tool interfaces and buy your equipment accordingly.

click start / windows
type power options and select it

go to battery
check the low and critical battery level and actions.

if those aren't set in 20% it probably means your battery is out of calibration.

I need a new battery or charger for toshiba laptop A105-S2101. The battery is a PA3451U-1BRS and its a DC 14.4v 2000mah.

Well first off the battery wont hold or take a charge. Everytime I unplug it from the wall the laptop goes off too. The lights do come on the laptop showing that its charging.

2nd thing is does voltage matter on battery replacement? I cant find 14.4 replacement thats cheap. All ones I find 10.? volt with 4000-4400mah on ebay.

A:Laptop battery replacement

You need to use the same battery, and the same charger voltages. High capacity batteries usually have a higher mah figure, but I would replace them like for like.

Batteries are never cheap, and they do wear out - some faster than others, but eventually they all die and stop holding charge.

I think 550w might be pushing it slightly, though I'm not entirely sure, so best wait for it to be confirmed by someone else.

Maybe dump the case (your Lian Li will be plenty good enough) and grab a couple of Spinpoint F3 1TB hard disks for storage?

Or get a decent aftermarket cooler for your new CPU?

I've been looking into purchasing a new Nvidia GPU that supports DX11.

I have an EVGA motherboard, however, the GPU does not have to be from that subsidiary company. I was looking between the 460 and the 470, and couldnt decide whether or not the extra hundred bucks for the 470 would be worth it or not. I will not be using 3D vision, so count that out.

I didn't want to get the 480 since thats around 500 bucks.

What are your opinions? I will be playing games such as Crysis 2 when that comes out, Battlefield BC2, Medal of Honor, Dirt 2, Metro 2033, Mafia II, etc.

My system specs are as follows:
EVGA P55V 120-LF-E651-TR Intel chipset motherboard
Intel i7-860 Quad CPU @ 2.8ghz
OCZ Gold 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 1333mz PC3 10666 (OCZ3G1333LV4G63581470)

Hi;
I have had my iPod 20Gig 4th gen for about 5 years, and as expected the battery no longer holds a good charge. I usually have about 2 hours of listening (mostly to audio books), but when it was new, it was more like 5 or 6 hours.

I have continued to use this iPod mostly at home, charging it frequently, and sometimes leaving it connected to the charger while using it.
I have a slight concern about the Lithium battery in the unit, and whether an old battery could be more susceptible to explode while being charged.
I have been leaving the unit on charge overnight, but have never detected any heat in the unit or the charger while it is connected.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

FW

A:Old iPod, weak battery

It is completely natural for the battery life to deteriorate over time. You most likely will be able to get the battery replaced at an apple store- here is a list of prices if you are interested:
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/#us

I would not worry about the battery exploding either. Although it happens on occasion, the number of cases I have heard of is in the single digits.

Yes, there's a battery and it's replaceable.

Hello
I'm new to this community. I needed some advice on what video card to purchase. I'm not much of a gamer so my budget is rather small(aroundRs3000). I've shortlisted a few cards - Nvidia(XFX) 8400gs(costs around Rs1800), 9400gt(512mb, 1gb), 9500gt(1gb).
Ati Radeon(XFX) HD4350(512mb, 1gb), HD4550(1gb), HD4650(512mb, 1gb).
There are other manufacturers as well such as ASUS, MSI to name a few. The ones I'm having difficulty in choosing are 8400gs and Ati HD4350(512mb or 1gb). I read a few posts about Ati HD4350 having overheating issues(something related to not having a fan), some installation issues as well.
My PC specs are: Intel D946GZIS, CORE 2 DUO 2.2 GHz, 2gb RAM.
(Hope I have posted in the right section)

A:Need advice on what video card to purchase

I just signed up on this thing and don't claim to know nothin' about nothin'. I'm not a big gamer either, but I'm big enough fan of one game to start the build hunt. What I've learned is research. Check out gpureview.com and you can compare each card against each other. I compared the 9500 GT (because it's cheap and seems like the best bang for your buck) to other cards of intrest and thought it beat comparative specs across the board, but I don't think its fast enough to play a lot of newer games. It did get great reviews, but the card itself is already 2 years + old.

Hi, I have a Gateway AJ2 that is acting up. If I have the battery installed, the computer runs on the battery, regardless if the AC adapter is plugged in or not. If the battery isn't installed, the computer runs on AC with no problems.

The battery does not charge. The computer is a little over a year old. I don't exactly recall when the problem started, but it might have been after a Windows Vista update or a bios update.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

A:Laptop runs on only battery or AC, not both

The battery is probably bad. They are consumables, just like paper is to a printer... Regardless of its age, it needs to be replaced if only to verify for a bad battery or not

Greetings. I am in the neighborhood for a Laptop. Our local Best Buy store has a Toshiba Laptop A665-S6050. among other things it comes with a 12 cell battery, 500 GB HDD, Core i-3 proc, 4 GB DDR3 RAM.

From what I have been told to look for, this has it all. The tech guys at work favor Dell or Toshiba. Consumer Reports shows favorable ratings for Dell, HP and Toshiba.

I am at the point of having over analyzed laptops and am temporarily burned out from looking.

My biggest concern is Customer Service/Tech Support. Toshiba has been beaten up since moving CS to Manila.
(My cynical side says all CS departments are likely equal depending on day and rep you talk to...)

A:Which laptop to purchase

I've you looked at QVC and HSN for laptop deals. They offer more CS/TS than you get from retail. QVC is more upscale they feature HP /DELL/ ACER as HSN ACER/Gateway. HSN is cheaper, price are 599 to 799 and QVC prices are 699 to 1099. Great part about them you don't have to pay full price if you got on the 4-6 months no interest flex pay deal and most have shipping for free and no tax depends on your state and if you order online. Delivery is quick!

HP are no. 1 in laptops sells followed by ACER (acer makes Gateway and emachine), then DELL and the rest.

What you're looking for is:

Intel i-core 3 or 5
500GB or better HDD
12-13 cell battery
4GB min 6GB for RAM
10/100/1000mb/s for wired NIC
802.11(a,b,g,n) for wireless NIC (note 802.11a is rare in a laptop and dual band also)
web cam
HDMI port
4 USB ports
15.6 min or 17.3 (1080p full HD)
LED/LCD Ultra-Brite Screen than the Matt type. On Blue-Ray laptop the screen is sharper
DVDRW or Blue-Ray

Get extra battery and power supply they do come in handly.
Also retail price deals not always as good as online or HSN or QVC deals.

If you going to buy it from BB, get HP or ACER. DELLs are good for business model Latitude.

what is this error when i boot my cusin portable it doest boot immediately error appears as" bad cmos battery -error date & time. it says there that i need to choose either f2 (utilities bios or press f1 .when press f2 it goes straight to bios of course! but the best option is to press f1 so it will bot normaly to the xp windows OS specs is WIN XP SP1. Do we need to replace the cmos battery now.

A:Bad CMOS battery

Does it do this on every boot up? Have you tried going F2, after your in the bios hit F10 (should prompt you to SAVE, if not, then exit and save) If it continues to do this then yes, you will need to replace the CMOS battery and hope that it is just the battery and not where it sits.

I have a Dell XPS M that turned one year last week During that week I made screenshots of the CPUID-information delivered to me I use this wonderful piece of software to monitor Battery development capacity a a over and year week, the temperature of the notoriously hot computer and after mye last harddrive-crash I found the new version contains information about the battery too I wonder How can Battery capacity development over a week, and a year the current full charge capacity swing so much on a day to day basis And is it normal that the battery has lost of its capacity during the first year Even though lithium batteries are not supposed to have a memory-effect I still cling to the quot empty first load thereafter quot -strategy and have had good success with that on cell phones But the Dell disappoints me as it does in any other respect anyway - new harddiscs new motherboard and a new battery already in week one are the results of the first year s use and maintenance need Never needed maintenance on any PC or notebook ever before PC-use since Best regards ungua nbsp

A:Battery capacity development over a week, and a year

16% loss after one year is reasonable. ok, so not all battery manufacturers have "accurate" battery wear level but i will post mine: i got 2 laptops with accurate battery so far (acer TM4000 and 5930G)

the latter, was bought in early dec 2008. so today, after about 1.5 years it has 31% wear level. now = 48988mwh. was = 71040mwh.

in my case, the level get worse if i use the laptop everyday on battery. once I kept the battery and use the laptop as a desktop replacement the level barely increase. one tip to keep it is that to "calibrate" your laptop battery as often as possible. In some cases I successfully decrease the wear level by doing that. It's clear that short discharge of battery actually worsen the age of the battery itself.

I saw few sony vaio & toshiba laptops, with battery wear level at 0% but battery dies within 5-10 minutes of usage.

Can a low bios battery cause slow computer operation? I am getting a low battery warning when booting up which probably is the reason the computer is slower than dirt. Thanks

A:Dell desktop BIOS battery question

i'd be more inclined to blame something else on poor performance, because all the BIOS battery does is keep CMOS settings. it's a small, low-voltage, button cell battery that powers the chip socket. if you are experiencing slow performance, try defragging your hard drive and scanning for viruses. if the computer is taking it's time starting up, check your startup list and disable everything that's not necessary.

People say that you should Overclock in increments, but what if you memorized the Overclocking settings and jump directly to them after a CMOS reset?

A:CMOS reset then OC'ing right after

It will either work or it wont... no real way of knowing until you try it. Every motherboard is different, and some even allow you to save your settings in profiles, so you might experience a problem or it might work just fine.

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop that is about 3 years old. Recently, the battery will only charge to 35%. It then will stop charging though it remains plugged in. I have tried letting the battery die completely and recharging it. Again, it will charge, but only to 35%. Is this indicative of the battery being old?

My friend's laptop won't turn on. It doesn't start to boot or anything. My first thought is it's either the battery or the A/C adapter but I'm not sure how to check those without having swappable pieces (which I don't have.)
I took the battery out and tried to power on with just the A/C adapter plugged in and same as with the battery in, only thing that happens is the little light with the lightening symbol flashes 3 times. Also the little light where you plug the charger in lights up while the charger is in. Would the laptop power up with just the A/C adapter plugged in and no battery?

I am in need of a new laptop which is not my primary computer. I need to keep cost down. I use laptop mostly for banking and surfing. I have a Dell Inspiron which is a royal pain from the day I purchased. Now it is a slug. Needless to say, Dell is not my American Idol. But, Costco has a deal for a Studio 15, with a V505 printer, for $600 plus shipping. I've looked at some Acer products with a relatively low price. Any suggestions?

A:New laptop purchase, mostly for banking and surfing

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear about your current laptop but I think the Dell Studio 15 is worth checking out. It has a 15.6" high-definition LED widescreen display and features optional Intel® Core? i7 mobile processors. With the printer included, it sounds like you are getting a pretty good deal! The Acer Aspire AS7740-5691 is a great laptop for productivity and multi-media. It has a a cinematic 17.3" HD+ LED-backlit display. The Acer Aspire AS5740-6491 is another option that has a smaller screen and excellent connectivity.

I hope this was helpful. Let me know if you have any questions!

I have an ASUS Eee pc 904hd - it just doesn't power up at all - the lights on the charger light up - but there is no power to the laptop.

1.Should this run on mains alone ?(thus indicating a dc jack problem)

2.Or is it more likley to be the battery ?

Any ideas how I can test - or if there is a guide to replacing DC jacks ?

Cheers Guys

A:Eee pc dead battery or DC jack how to tell ?

When I was in RS I use take the multi-meter and test the AC/DC adapter to if it was reading the correctly. The jack should be soldered in the motherboard. I know my ASUS Eee PC has tiny slot of the power. Got to handle it gentle. You could fix the issue but replacing the motherboard. I

Look at these pictures of your unit inside of it. Everything is on the MOBO soldered.
