I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,
Not sure if this is the right place to post it, but anyone know where's the cheapest place to buy Windows 7 Home Premium??

I need the full retail Windows 7 Ultimate but want to get a legit copy. I see everything from full price at the retailers to ~$175 on ebay to obviously pirated copies on Craigslist... anyone here have the lowdown on a discount non-sketchy source?

A:Cheapest place to buy??

Retailers are the only reliable source. Many of the ebay copies are pirated as well. I can locate upgrade ultimate's as low as 80 and even that is outlet level deal.

Sometimes there are super deals on software if someone knows where to find it, like Acronis True Image 11 someone here told me about for only $10.

Now I'm looking for Nero 9. I have version 7 Ultra so I think I qualify for their upgrade to 9 for $49.99; but, is there a cheaper way that anyone here knows of?

I need a version that runs on Vista Ultimate Service Pack 1.

A:Cheapest place/way to get Nero 9?

I don't think you are going to fing it cheaper.
Acronis 11 was sold at $10 because they were about to release version 12.

If you do have nero 7 ultra there is an update on the nero website

I need to get Office quickly. But I don't know the cheapest place to get it. At my college computer store, it's $65 for the 2007 Office Professsional version.
Or, is Office 2003 just as good? Because I would be fine with 2003.

Looking at ebay, it's probably more expensive buying from there. I only see 1 listing at < $65.

Would Walmart be cheaper? Is there a way I can get just Office, Powerpoint, and Excel?

A:Where would be the cheapest place to get Office?

Do you have to have Microsoft Office? The reason I ask is that you can download OpenOffice for free and it is compatible with Microsoft Office.

I found a year old thinkpad with 8 GB RAM and other nice specs for $320 and in perfect condition allegedly, but someone else snagged it before I could.

I know alienwares are good.. I found a m14x for $700. Is that good?

But looking at something and cheaper, maybe $500? (used or new) what would be good? Looking for lots of RAM and good processor/ video card. Something I could game on. Also something with a webcam and not design-flawed. (i.e, the fan built near the bottom so it over-heats unless it's raised up) Also something with long battery life would be ideal.

Thanks you for your advice.

I'm replacing the screen on my Y580 and I was wondering which LCDs I can use. I used the part number N156HGE-LA1 to search for new screens, but I found out that screen model is used in other laptops besides Y580 (such as HPs). That made me doubt whether it would work in my laptop or not. So then I tried another number from the screen: 209945U That one seems to be exclusive to the Y580. I found that screen for sale, but it's more expensive. Will the N156HGE-LA1 screen work for me even though Amazon is saying it's for a different laptop, or will I have to use the 209945U screen instead? Also, is there a certain brand someone could direct me to which makes this screen and you know is good quality? Thanks so much. - Brian

My laptop has two regular harddrives, one of which I rarely use. So I am thinking to transfer the files and documents that I don't regularly access to the unused harddrive and transfer the OS and programs to a 250 gb SSD that can be installed internally.

I have been looking online, but it seems that the cost of a 250gb ssd may not be low enough for my tastes. I am wondering if anyone knows what brands or models I should be focusing on and whether anyone is aware of very good deals.

A:Solved: blue screens black screens green screens

The issues sound a bit like a hardware failure, the blue STOP screen could be hardware or software.

The Black screen sounds like the PC has died, but the power supply continues to run. This could well be hardware.

Both issues could be something like overheating of the CPU (are all fans running, is the CPU fan dust clogged - shouldnt be if it's "new")?

If it's "new" and under warranty, take it back.

It would have helped to know if it was a desktop or laptop though.

Hi I've been reading threads for hours on Windows 7 installs but I can't find a specific answer for my scenario.

I am looking at buying a couple of Toshiba laptops that have a pre-installed version of Windows 7 Home Premium. I already own a Microsoft Action Pack which gives me 10 Windows 7 Professional licences. I want to be able to upgrade the OS on the laptops from the Home Edition to the Professional Edition. Because the laptops are already setup with all the toshiba software drivers etc installed I am reluctant to do a clean install. Is it possible to use the product key from my Action Pack to upgrade the laptops without having to wipe them and start again?

I'm not concerned about loosing the home premium licence I just want to upgrade to Professional Edition with minimum fuss.

I hope someone can help clarify this. Thanks.

I have my own computer repair shop, and there's a dude I know who despise me for no apparent reason. He has much more IT certifications than I do and I'm wondering if he is spying on me or sniffing my IP packets using a customer's PC which he could use as a "trojan horse" inside my house. He can get pretty dirty as he is known to have done so a couple of times!

If there are preventive practices that I could use it will be awesome if you share some!

A:white screens, black screens, blue screens... out of nowhere!

OK, I have read you last thread and sounds like you made some progress.

Lets see the details of the Blue Screen, follow this guide to attach it to your next post.

First locate your minidump files, they are usually found by clicking on your C: drive, in Windows Explorer, then click on Windows to view the contents. If your operating system is installed under a different drive letter then look there. They should be stored under a file called minidump. The files will have a .dmp extension.
Zip up at least 6 of the most recent files into one zip folder and save on your desktop (if there are less then just zip up what you have).
NOTE To zip up a file in Windows (all versions). Right-click the file or folder, click on Send To, and then click Compressed (zipped) Folder and save it to your desktop.
Open Windows Explorer, click on Desktop in the left column so you can see the zip file. In the left column click on C: > Windows > Minidump and then drag & drop any additional .dmp files into the zip folder.

• Below the Message Box click on Go Advanced. Then scroll down until you see a button, Manage Attachments. Click on that and a new window opens.
• Click on the Browse button, find the zip folder you made earlier and doubleclick on it.
• Now click on the Upload button. When done, click on the Close this window button at the bottom of the page.
• Enter your message-text in the message box, then click on Submit Message/Reply.Click to expand...

Just re-posting the link for your last thread as you didn't post it correctly:

Sort of URGENT wasn't paying attention and clicked cancel and confirm cancel on the following message saying quot DONT MESS WITH CRAP quot and now this partition isn't readable I've tried chkdsk f that says write protected I tried fixmbr which did nothing I have tried checking to see if I can install vista on another partition but it says g HD with free I tried DISKPART off the startup disk and it says that the filesystem shows up as raw I am in the gparted disk again looking through testdisk and it says there is no partition really Disk part shows me three partitions though volume and is around gigs so thats the partition I need but I can't access it or make it bootable I tried act to make it active but now when I load the system without any other disc in there it just repeats on a flashing cursor I'm not sure what else to do I really need to get this guys computer fixed but I'm in over my head here

One thing I can suggest is to use Recuva to try and recover the partition or the files from it...

please i did a mistake yesterday i place a magnet a very powerful magnet, near my pc at work last night and since den my pc is not booting
its telling me that hard drive not found
please what can i do?
somebody help!!

A:hello please i place magnet near my hard drive on laptop but its not working again

It would have had to be a very powerful magnet to erase the drive -- more likely is a coincidental drive failure.
Unplug the system, remove or disconnect the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec. Remove and reinstall the hard drive -- if it's then still not seen, replace it.

Is there anything at all I can do to make it look better? It does have an SVGA port on it but would just changing the S-Video to SVGA really make it so its not squished and fuzzy?

The kicker is the specs show - which means it should display just fine right?

I have Dell Inspiron N4050 Laptop with Integrated Webcam and running Windows 7 Ultimate edition - 64 bit..
I normally call using Gmail's Call phone service. I want to setup so that I can use Internal microphone in laptop to transmit my voice and hear the incoming call voice using external speakers.

**** I normally keep external speakers connected to laptop for listening to music, but whenever I have to make a call, I have to remove the speaker cables and connect headphone cables in audio jack. So, I am looking up for solution to do make audio/video calls using external speakers and without needing to connect headphones to transmit my voice to caller.

Could you help me with the setup please?
Thanks a lot!

A:Use external speakers in place of headphone and Laptop's microphone

Short answer, no. Because of the feedback problems, most users use a separate combination headset/mic to minimize feedback problems. Otherwise you will have to manually change things each time you speak or listen.

A:CPU replacement on a laptop

Hi there
While some things on a laptop are usually pretty easy to change -- for example swapping the HDD for an SSD , changing the keyboard (tricky but usually do-able) or adding more RAM - or even on an OLDER laptop changing the DVD device, I'd really leave this operation to a local repairer -- look in your equivalent of the ONLINE "Yellow pages" for these sorts of trades people. You would probably need to remove the motherboard which is a fairly NON TRIVIAL task on most laptops.

I've opened enough computers in my time -- and I've learned when to leave well alone - you might also need some specialized tools for this job too.

Note also just swapping the CPU for a faster one won't necessarily bring better results. Things like Internal Bus speed will limit the improvement - so just replacing an i5 with an i7 won't necessarily give you what you expect (apart from more heat and higher power consumption. - On almost ANY conceiveable laptop from a Netbook upwards the BEST performance you can get --always assuming there is sufficient RAM in the computer is to fit an SSD. !!)

Hi everyone!

I have an Hp zv5000. The hard-drive needs to be replaced, however, I know NOTHING about a laptop HD so I am now asking for help. How do you shop for laptop hard drives? Are they all standard like a desktops? Do certain brands work with certain models? Are the hook-ups (Pin Count) the same? Thanks for your help!

--Daniel L

A:Laptop HD Replacement

laptop hard drives fit in a caddy. You will need to power down your laptop, and unscrew the the caddy from the case. gently remove the caddy with the HD on it. Some makers like Toshiba also have an adapter that plugs into the pins on a hd. IF so, gently remove it. You will need it later.

When shopping for HDs for a laptop, speed is important. Most HDs on laptops are unbearably slow. Get a 7200 speed or faster. you will need to specifically shop for a LAPTOP HDs. Note the Size of your HD. Generally they're 2.5 in physical size.

the next important consideration is capacity. Since few laptops allow more than 1 internal HD, get a big HD. You can later partition this drive into small partitions if need be.

Faster hard drives also improve battery life when using batteries. Since they read faster, they access less thereby using less juice. You won't notice much of an improvement, but there is a tad improvement. To really boost battery life and performance overall, add RAM instead.

Generally you shouldn't have any issues with 3rd party brands, just remember, you will need to connect the adapter (if any) and the tray onto your new hard drive before sliding the tray and re-screwing it back in.

Once you have completed this operation, format and install your OS and files as normal.

There are some laptop hard drive makers that have converter kits. You basically clone your OS and files to your new HD before installing the HD. You then can use your old HD as an external, spare drive. These are nifty and I have one.

Ensure when you slide the caddy with your new HD into the computer to do it gently and not to bend the pins. USE the adapter if it has one. If you don't it won't work and in the worse case sceario, you'll bend or break your pins on your new HD. very bad.

good luck!

A:G42 Laptop HD Replacement

JKBlair You don't have to do anything special for the laptop to see the SSD -- just connect it in place of the HDD. Then, insert the first of the recovery disks into the DVD drive, close the drive door, and boot the PC. It should then present instructions for doing the restore. Since you are using recovery media, that should automatically reactivate Win7 one the restore is done and you connect again to the Internet. Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on my post to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

Long story short I got a version of Windows 7 and burned it to a DVD+R BOOTABLE DVD. SO i COnnected her new Hard drive and there is nothing on it so I figured that a bootable windows 7 CD+R would help install the new copy of windows on the new hard drive. All it does it make some noises like its trying to run the DVD and then says please insert bootable disk once again. It is a bootable disk i thought? I used powerISO burned windows 7 to DVD+R disk but still will not install windows on the fresh HD. Help? I think? Idk what else to do.

A:HP laptop New HD Replacement HELP!

It would be best to get a machine specific disk to re-install Windows on that machine, if you call HP they can supply it for you. Sometimes for a nominal fee.
If the machine has a Windows serial number on a sticker on the underside you could use a standard Windows image, but you will have to search for your drivers from the HP website.
Make sure you are creating a disk with your ISO image, not copying the data to disk. They are very different functions.

i am buying a laptop and an wonder what is the best screen for quality and crispness can you tell me the rang of best screens and what to look for in a screen for example samsung has SuperBright 300 nit Anti-reflective HD (1366 x 768) LED

A:laptop screens quality help

The screen size depends on the usage of your computer. If you want to use for browsing, MSOffice etc. then a 14" or 15" screen is sufficient. If you watch lots of movies then better go for a screen larger than 17" with 16:9 aspect ratio.

The Screen quality depends on your budget. If you have good budget, go for full HD (1080i) resolution screens with LED backlit. The latest LED backlit screens provide brighter images with low power consumption. Otherwise you can go for a (720p) screen for low cost. It is better to get a matt finish screens which are antireflective rather than glossy finish.

It installed fine, booted for the first time, i was tired so i shut it down and went to bed.

The next morning i turned it on it looked like it was booting fine but then it went straight to start up repair, the start up repair went for about 30 minutes and said no solution could be found. I tried a couple more times, every time the start up repair would take longer to say the same thing, until it simply started blue screening shortly after "Starting Windows".

So i decided to try reinstalling over the top, i put the installation disk in started the setup it loaded files and said "Starting Windows" shortly after it blue screened.

So now i had no clue what was happening, i managed to get into start up repair somehow, don't remember, and got into command prompt, from there i formatted the partition deleting all files on the disk. I then tried to boot to check if the format was successful and it said no bootmgr etc was found, so i determined the hard-drive was now clean.

So i put the installation disk in and booted from it, same thing loaded files, "Starting Windows", blue screen. I have no clue what is going on here and would appreciate any help, i am beginning to think it is a hardware error og some sort.

BTW it is windows 7 build 7068.

I had a similar problem with my Acer laptop with 7068, which seems to have been solved with 7077. If you don't want to download 7077, you might try a fresh burn and install of the 7068 DVD and see if that does the trick. Also, builds 7048 and 7057 behaved well with the Acer. Good luck!

In a PC? Yes. In a Laptop? No, unless you have experience. Most times you would be stuck replacing it with an exact duplicate of what you have now. Cases may look the same but on closer look there are differences in the cases according to model, and the cases are pretty much designed to have a particular motherboard installed.

The problem is I cracked the led screen that came with it. I ordered a replacement screen from and they sent me a samsung as opposed to a chi mei, which should be compatible. The problem now is that there doesnt seem to be any power getting to the LED backlight. I tested it with the cracked screen as well, and its backlight didn't work either. There is a very faint image of whatever is on the screen, so the video card is working properly.

What should I do? Is there something i could fix? a place i could send it to that would cost less than $400 to fix? I'd prefer to fix it on my own.

A:Laptop battery replacement

You need to use the same battery, and the same charger voltages. High capacity batteries usually have a higher mah figure, but I would replace them like for like.

Batteries are never cheap, and they do wear out - some faster than others, but eventually they all die and stop holding charge.

I have a Toshiba laptop - a Satellite A -S model replacement to it the Fan laptop does model? same for be - have It s an older laptop so the fan I want to replace is hard to find and expensive Is there any way a different model fan could be used in its place Perhaps just an A without having to match teh S part Or even a non-Toshiba fan altogether Problem is that although the computer starts up fine after a few moments it shuts down My sources tell me that it s almost certainly a fan issue that to keep it from overheating it just shuts it down I ve seen the Youtube videos of what it takes to replace the thing and I m not confident enough in myself Fan replacement for laptop - does it have to be the same model? to take the entire computer apart to swap it out But I don t want to pay full retail for a fan either that a repairman will charge So I thought I see if I could just buy the fan myself at the cheapest rate then get a repair guy to swap it out with me only paying a labor charge Btw what kind of rate would I expect to pay for a laptop fan replacement I have no idea nbsp

On my taskbar I have a message saying that a replacement battery is needed. My computer is so very slow and I am curious if this is the reason for the slowness? I haveto use the computer with it plugged in at all times otherwise I will lose power within 8 minutes.

I'm trying to work on solutions for a friend with a Toshiba A15 S127. The display has gone dark. I believe it is the backlight that has gone out since I can vaguely see the desktop when I shine a light on it and the funtion-f7 didn't make it brighter.

I have two concerns regarding purchasing a replacement display.

1) Is it relatively straight forward to replace. I have cracked the case on an old Thinkpad and a Mac laptop so I don't mind trying, I just want to understand the risks first.

2) Several online articles indicate that the inverter may also be the cause of this problem. Is the inverter part of the replacement display or part of the main casing internals? I hate to spend to much on a display only to find I have to spend more on an inverter or have I got this pattern backwards.

A:laptop display replacement

Could be either the inverter or the backlight, no easy way to tell except by replacement. That often means its cheaper to have it done in a shop, rather than buy both parts.

Grtting the laptop apart can be a problem unless you follow the disassembly instructions (if you can get them), but having it still work when reassembled is even more rare...

Has anyone here tried replacing the wireless card in their laptop with an 802.11n model? One fly in the ointment is that the laptop only has two antenna connections, and the 'n' card has three antennas. I see varying reports around the web of how this will effect the function of the card. Some say it'll still be better than an 802.11g card, others are not so sure.

It appears that the proper mini-PCI Express card is available, so it's really down to how effective the thing will be with two antennas vs. the three it should have. I have not found any 'n' mini-PCI Express cards with two antenna connections, though I have a D-Link 802.11n router that only has two.

Obviously, I don't want to spend $60 for the card if it's not going to be satisfactory.

I have 2 laptops-

Lenovo V570
HP Pavilion DV4T-1400

Lenovo V570 - Its not booting up. I tried Lenovo Bootable Diagnostic USB Tool. And ran all the scans. It showed FAN not available (it seems FAN is working fine as I can feel the air from the side & the laptop is not heating too) & bad sectors in HDD.
I am thinking of replacing the HDD with HP laptop HDD to see if Lenovo boots fine. Can I do this & any harm to HP HDD or the data on HDD doing this?
I dont know much about hardware. Can anyone tell me if both the laptop has same type HDD & the replacement can be tried?

A:Laptop HDD Replacement Info/Help

Laptop HDD's are 2.5" sizes, so they will work on any other laptop as they are all 2.5" and SATA.
You can put the faulty hard drive into a 2.5" USB enclosure to connect it to your HP laptop to access/backup the data.

If the Lenovo does not boot up and there are bad sectors it's probably a failing hard drive which is the problem, not the motherboard.

That said, yes you can put the HP hard drive into the Lenovo, just make sure the SATA connections are firm.

I purchased a replacement DVD R/W for my Dell Inspiron E1505. When I start up the computer the light comes on the drive and I am able to open the drive by pushing the button on the drive. my problem is the drive does not show up on "my computer" nor in the device manager. I updated my BIOS from the Dell website but that did not fix the problem.
The seller said he tested the drive on laptop the same model as min and that it worked. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Guys, just trying to get some info.

I need to change a HDD in a Vaio VGN-N130G

The system came originally with a 80GB with a 1.6GHz processor

I ve narrowed down the HDD to the following 2: ( to be honest mostly due to budged restraints!!)

Western Digital Scorpio Blue (WD1600BEVT) 160GB SATA 5400 RPM 8MB or

Seagate ST980813ASG Momentus 7200.2 Mobile Hard Drive - 80GB, 2.5", 7200RPM, 8MB, SATA-300

Now space considerations wise...I believe an 80GB would serve the purpose of the use of the computer more than adequately.....if so would u say the performance benefits of the seagate being a 7200rpm drive would be more advantageous...

or would the 7200 be more of a drain or create issues with cooling, resources etc..

many thanks for your time and view points on the issue..

A:Laptop HDD Replacement Choice

if space isn't an issue i'd go with the 7200RPM drive. you'll get a slightly noticeable performance boost. and in the future if you need more space the cost of external drives is dropping pretty quicly.

Hey guys & gals,

Someone brought me a Dell Inspirion 1150 and it looks as if the HD is shot. (I reinserted the HD several times and it still would not recognize it) The HD is an Hitachi 08K0851 with UDMA 100. Does the replacement drive have to be UDMA100 ? ATA or IDE won't work ? I'm just looking for suitable replacement.

A:Dell Laptop HD Replacement

That appears to be a bog standard 2.5" ATA 100 IDE drive.

I recently cracked the LCD on my Asus M50Vm version B4 laptop. Other than not being able to see the the damaged area of the monitor, it works fine. I purchased a replacement, being careful to match the specs: WXGA+, 1440 X 900, CCFL, 30-pin, 15.4". The replacement monitor was correctly installed, but it was completely blank. I returned that one, and purchased another from a different supplier - same thing, but the image was ever-so-slightly visible - (often a symptom of a bad inverter I believe). I re-installed the cracked LCD, and again, aside from the damaged area, it works fine.

So what's up? Did I manage to buy 2 DOA LCD's, or LCD's that fit but with the wrong specs? Or could this be indicative of some strange inverter issue?

I've heard that you can replace videocards on larger laptops, i've got a sager with a d900k motherboard and i'm wondering just how difficult is the install? is it as easy as in a desktop?

What model number is your laptop?
Generally speaking, VGA card replacement in laptops is not practical unless this thing is designed that way.
