Future PC Architecture

Q: Future PC Architecture

Now here is something you dont hear a lot of croncrete stuff about....
Searched for a forum on this subject but found none, so here you have it.
Some questions if you please:
-Should we be going wider and/or faster, faster?
-Should we be standardising more?
-Should we be focusing on getting the OS completely right? Should it be free?
-Is the future of computing best left entirely in the hands of Corporates or should there be some Governance?
-What is the best all round PC architecture?
-Why do they still cost so much?
-Why cant I add my new system to my old system and get the power of both?

Many more where that came from but lets open the discussion......

Preferred Solution: Future PC Architecture

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Future PC Architecture

1)The faster new technology is brought to the mainstream market, the faster prices on the "older" tech drops so it's a cycle that will benefit the consumer.

2)Standardization might help in some cases, but then that would mean either everyone has a gaming PC or they do not. That would be pretty limiting IMO.

3)Getting OSes right would not need to be the focus, since Service Packs/updates would eventually fix all the issues present in them. But yes, I do think they should be made cheaper. Free? I don't think that would help, since it would not give anyone incentive to develop something that's better and even if they do, they wouldn't be able to/willing to share it with the rest of the world.

4)Governments usually mess up things since in the end, they are able to get away with everything. Corporations depend on the end user's satisfaction to survive, so that would be a better thing. But a merging of the two ideas, such as greater governmental control over corporations regarding research wouldn't be such a bad idea.

5)This is debatable and bound to change, according to the first question, so it really isn't valid.

6)PC costs have reduced quite a lot since the late 1990s. So I don't think they cost too much.

7)Well that's because new tech always phases out old tech since companies need to sell the new tech more to earn more money to research more "new tech" and recover the cost/make a profit off of producing the recently released "new tech" that is going to become "old tech" in some years' time. They don't want you to use the old parts with the new ones since the new ones "perform better" and also get them heftier profits. And so the cycle continues...

I don t know if this is the right place to put this so I appologize So my current computer specs are - Intel core i - k - Gigabyte Geforce GTX TI BOOST - Corsair Vengeance GB of RAM - Asus card for Upgrading games evolve future graphics the and P Z -V LX mother board - Corsair Gold AX PLUS Upgrading graphics card for evolve and the future games Power Supply So for the past days I ve been looking around at different graphic cards and I narrowed it down to these three EVGA GeForce GTX SC ACX GB G-P - -KR - - Must wait month Gigabyte GeForce GTX Ti GB Windforce - Can get it right now EVGA GeForce GTX Ti GB G-P - -KR - Can get it right now Now obvious reasons the is most likely the best of the three but also the most expensive one I would like to know if it s worth waiting month and get the if not bottle necked by other components or get one of the s instead Current games I play are Dying light and the reason I need a new card is for future games such as Evolve Batman Arkham knight etc I want to be able to stay frames Other suggestion are very much appreciated Also if you could explain why I should get that card would be awesome nbsp

I'm not sure if this the right forum since it's been upgraded. I am thinking of doing a new build of the AMD FM2+ and here is what I think that I want and I'm looking for any suggestions about this build in it's entirety. This is what I've picked at part pickers so far: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/oldguy55/saved/44ya , I'm not really a gamer, but I do a lot of video editing, converting, bluray/dvd recording and music cds. also keep in mind that I will probably be adding more hard drives to this build as my movie library is increasing.

A:Near Future New Build

Ok, so since you do a lot of video editing, I would make numerous changes:
1) I would go for an Intel platform rather than an AMD platform since Intel CPUs are dominant when it comes to video editing.
2) If you arent going to overclock the CPU much, I would tone down the cooler to something like a Hyper 212 Evo.
3) I would tone down the RAM to about 1600MHz since 2133MHz doesnt make much of a difference when video editing (or even gaming).
4) I would replace the Digital Black2 HDD/SSD combo with a pure SSD.
5) I would replace the AMD GPU with something more hefty and nVidia based. I say this because nVidia drivers are usually more consistent and nVidia GPUs are generally better for video editing. BUT, if you are working with programs such as Adobe CC, then I would stick with an AMD GPU (more powerful than a 250X) since Adobe products make use of OpenGL for the most part and AMD is dominant at that.
6) Case is your choice. I personally recommend Corsair cases.
7) The PSU can be toned down to a 750W (Corsair HX 750) possibly, but I wouldnt go any lower since you are hoping to add more HDDs.
8) I would find a Bluray reader and writer all in one rather than having 2.
9) There is really no advantage to having Windows 7 Ultimate over Professional or even Home Premium. Ultimate just really allows you to install language packs (there are some other features that arent really important).
10) You dont need a Wifi adapter as long as the motherboard supports Wifi, but it matters on the board. We can determine that once we figure out the specifics.
11) Keyboard looks fine. I personally recommend the Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750 ($60) since you never have to replace the batteries and the keys are more tactile. But it is your choice.
12) That mouse is made for laptops, just so you are aware .

Sorry for the long rant, but I want to get you the best rig possible . I just need you to answer some questions first though, what programs do you use? How hardcore of a video editor are you (professional?)? Are the projects you work with in very high resolutions such as 4K? What is your price range for this machine? <--- this will help determine which CPU and GPU you can purchase (along with other parts).

I hope this helps.

-JC

PCGH has thoughtfully provided some information regarding AMD's upcoming Vishera (Piledriver) range of consumer CPU's and APU's. The charts basically confirm the already leaked details circulating around the web.
One odd detail is that the top part, the FX-8350, appears to have a stock frequency of 4.0GHz, but turbo and maximum turbo are 4.1 and 4.2 respectively - You'd hope that these figures are for all four modules and not a single.

On a rather longer timeline, Theo Valich over at VR-Zone has outlined Intel's future server/workstation platforms - Brickland and Grantley- for Ivy Bridge-EX, Haswell-EX and Broadwell-EX, and are expected to serve through from 2013 to 2016.

I have been wanting to purchase the Thinkpad x120e, but I'm not sure if now is a good time, since it was released almost a year ago, and it is the first of it's kind to sport the new AMD e350 processor. I don't know if Lenovo plans on upgrading this soon (since it's been almost a year) and if it would be better to wait for the next gen of this class of non-netbook netbooks. I've got a Corsair 750TX and it runs two 1 gig overclocked Palit Sonic cards just fine, (see my specs above). Of course if you are planning for the future, I'd get a bigger one. Also a good place to check out how much power you need and compare it to other cards......

http://www.anandtech.com/show/3810/nvidias-geforce-gtx-460-part-2-the-vendor-cards/8

Oh, you can't run three of these cards in SLI, only two. Each card has only one place on top to put the SLI bridge, so, no three way. You could always use a third card for PhysX though.

Right now I have a build in mind for about 1,500 dollars, but If prices are going to drop I will DEFIANTLY wait. I'm wondering the most about the Core i7's, there motherboards and Nvidia graphics cards esp. in the GTX 285 range.

Just buy something with a socket that supports that processor. Since you only have one video card, you don't need to spend money on a pricey SLi board. That RAM will fit in most modern socket 775 boards so just look around. Abit, ASUS are probably my recommendation. Make sure the one you choose has plenty of SATA ports also.

A:Building a Future-proof Budget PC

First off you need to decide whether you want an AMD or Intel CPU. AMD is generally cheaper so if you want a fairly budget system then you may want to go with AMD.

This means you will need to get a socket AM2 motherboard (look for one with good reviews or see if anyone else can suggest one for you). Good AMD processors would be the Athlon 64 X2 5000+, 5600+ or 6000+ depending on how much speed you wanted. Respectively, these are 2.6, 2.8 and 3GHz per core. If you wanted to OC, then you could get the 5000+ Black Edition.

It is a good idea to get a GeForce 8 series card, you could either get the 8800GT or the 8800GTS rev. 2 when it comes out.

To go with this you will want to get good RAM and a decent PSU good enough to power all the parts and then some.

Without a budget it's hard to specify any parts other than what I've said already but i hope that helps.

Lots of things will probably change because I'll have to wait for the 9800 to come out but I want to know how much this hardware will approximately cost me.

A:I'm buying a new PC in the near future, what mobo should I get?

The ASUS P5K series is a good board. Are you going SLI with that? Did you want to wait until DDR3 mobos come down in price or just opt for a DDR2?(what the P5K series is)

Basically you're looking for any socket 775 mobo. Mobos come in so many flavors because they have various features:
Raid with IDE, no IDE etc.
1 Lan/2 Lan
On-board sound: good/bad/crappy.
SLI or not
and very important if choosing SLI mobo, the chipset like IC9H for example.

A:Suggestions on my future PC?

I'll show you pretty much the most powerful system currently possible and you can work your way down from there unless you want an insane system like this:

CPU - Core 2 Extreme QX6700 Quad-Core 2.66GHz - $1700
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115011

Motherboard - ASUS P5N32-E SLI - $300
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131073

RAM - 2X Corsair XMS2 2GB Dual Channel Kit (Total 4GB RAM) - $280x2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145590

Video Card - 2X Geforce 8800GTX SLI - $630x2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130072

That system could multitask like hell. Could probably run 2 instances of Oblivion at the same time and still get 20FPS+ in both of em. That can play ANY game (besides oblivion) at 80FPS+ @1280x1024 guaranteed. Total cost for those parts is $3,820. You also need hard drives ($100) and DVD Drives ($40), Case ($50-$200) Power supply (1000W PLUS ONLY) ($200+). So the total there comes to around $4,200. Of course if you don't want to pay that much, the best 2 things to do are to get rid of one of the 2 videocards and to get a cheaper CPU.

A:Future PC Specs .... good, bad?

Hey

First, I think you should upgrade from a normal 17" LCD monitor to a widescreen LCD monitor that's about 19". You'd be satisfied with that.

If you want your PC to be future-proof and be good for years to come, get about 2GB of RAM (2 x 1GB sticks). 1GB of memory is barely cutting it these days.

If you're building a PC around this time, a Core 2 Duo should be the optimal choice. Those other Intels you see that are cheaper and faster are not Core 2 Duos. You should pick a Core 2 Duo, because (to answer your question) yes, a Core 2 Duo is "faster" (not in the sense of clock speed, but other factors).

For your habit of multitasking, you just need enough RAM and a dual-core Processor, which should allow you to do many things at once.

For the motherboard, I would recommend a nice ASUS motherboard. Definately look for SLI support for future expansion. Make sure the chipset supports the C2D.

If your budget for a graphics card is around $500, then you should definately get a DX10 card. A GeForce 8800 GTS would be nice.

For your power supply, get something around the 600 Watt range, since your PC is going to be pretty high-end. With your budget, you should have enough money to get a high-end PSU, like the ones with more than two +12V rails, modular cabling, fancy lights, etc.

Finally, tell us what website you will get your stuff from, so we can provide a direct link to a product suggestion. Also, this being your first build, you should do quite a bit of research first (mainly regarding the products, since the "how to build it" part is pretty easy). An informed buyer is more likely to be a satisfied buyer.

Good luck with your build

A:NEW to comps. Need Help With Future Comp Selection.

First of all: nice config!
second: dump the 6200 TurboCache!!
you shuld never go for a TurboCache card because it has no memory so it "steals" the systems RAM!
The Gf 6600 is an preety old card, I recomend you take the GeForce 7600 GT, it's the current best buy. try the Leadtek PX7600GT, it costs around 160$ but it's worth it!
Or, if you want an ATI card you could go for a Radeon X1600XT it cheaper (130$) but also a bit weaker than the 7600GT.

A:Choosing a Decent PSU for my future 7800 GS

2 12V rails are usually used in most new PSUs. It's not a question of 2 or 1 rails, it just boils down to the total amps on both rails together or on the one rail. For the 7800GS, I would recommend at least 36A on two rails i.e. 18A on each rail. Enlight is not a bad brand, but I would recommend an Antec, Enermax, Fortron or Thermaltake. Where are u living. Assuming ur in the US, try this PSU out.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103937
It has 38A on the 12V rails so it will hande ur 7800GS with no problems.

my AXP1800+ (palimino core) uses a ddr-266 bus hence i have ddr-266 (pc2100) memory to run in "sync" with.

next cpu upgrade is likely to be the AXP2500+ or higher (barton core) running on a ddr-333 bus hence to run in "sync" with new pc2700 memory would be most beneficial as the ddr-266 memory would be lagging behind.

now here's the question, i'm essentially thinking 2 upgrades ahead by wondering if it would be a good idea to buy 512mb of PC3200 (ddr-400) soon for a few reasons:
1. backward compatiable with ddr-266/333 bus speeds
2. higher spec ram capable of more aggressive settings
3. will last me through to the eventual upgrade to a 400mhz bus when the athlon 64 goes mainstream
4. it's only ~80-90 for 512mb which is cheap imho.

Anyone agree it would be a good idea to stock up now for the future whilst mobo and cpu catch up in the mean time?

A:Upgrading now to DDR-400 for future usage

The price difference between 333 and 400 DDR is very small now anyway, so it makes no sense to go for Ram which is already becoming obsolete. However, I would recommend running 400Mhz DDR at 333Mhz but with more aggressive settings (i.e. 400Mhz Cas2.5 should run at 333Mhz Cas2), as running 400Mhz DDR with a 333Mhz CPU is currently slower on most boards (except NForce 2) than running 333Mhz RAM, since they are not running in sync.

Ummm, Nvidia dominates pc gaming gpu market so how could they loose? Do you have any figures to support theses claims? If anything G-sync wins if no real contender enters the arena. Would prefer if VESA thing was standard and all would use it but as I said Amd is at all time low with no hope in sight and when there's no other companies making these products there's no real competition for g-sync. Anyone who uses integrated graphic don't know or care about these things so intels move doesn't contribute one bit.

Hi, well cluster architecture (server based) is not what you are referring to, I assume you mean the allocation unit size cluster?

Why do you want to know, and what do you use your computer for? We have found that the default works for most users, there is pro's and con's to any changes. SSD's also make a difference.

If you are in the process of formatting, then the following will not be relevant.

To see what you have go to start search and type:- cmd right click on the returned cmd.exe and select "run as administrator" at the prompt copy paste:-

fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo c: > 0 & notepad 0 press enter ( this assumes the drive is C:, if not change), you can post the notepad outcome here if you like.

I'm very happy with 7 x64 and have no desiree to move to Windows 10, does anyone know how to avoid the windows 10 junk that is now coming up on Windows Updates, so far i have been able to avoid the junk (well no icon in corner etc) but who know knowing MS that may well put something through one day as "critical" and get me that way

I do not want to upgrade my Windows 7 to Windows 10.

I am providing a link to a program called GWX Control Panel which helps rid you of the update process.
The author gives plenty of information on this page (worth reading) and there is a download link to the right.
You just need to download the portable version and run it. No Install required.

Ultimate Outsider: Using GWX Control Panel (formerly GWX Stopper) to Permanently Remove the 'Get Windows 10' Icon

This will also help in the future if Microsoft changes tactics and tries to upgrade against your will.
Well worth running after each patch Tuesday to make sure nothing has changed.

Good luck

Edit. The program is signed by the author and checksums are provided to verify the download.

I've watched both talks on TED my Mikko and he is very good, plus he has the ability to draw you in to the conversation, and easy to understand. Whether or not a light bulb is a threat, but would be fun to mess around with neighbours lighting.

P.S. I'm never going to mess with the robotics used in the OR, didn't know a robot had killed someone.

The future of security software isn t just blacklisting Instead it will often be something more like whitelisting shifting from everything is allowed except known-bad stuff to everything is denied except known-good stuff More sophisticated tools should also harden the software we use blocking techniques attackers use rather than fighting the losing battle of constantly adding new definitions Antivirus should be a last-ditch line of defense not something you rely Future of The Security Software on to save you To stay safe online you should act as if you had no antimalware software on your computer at all Antivirus isn t the cure-all it s often considered Don t have a false sense of security because antimalware software is running on your computer Blacklisting Is Fighting a Losing Battle Antivirus The Future of Security Software software relies on blacklisting and heuristics and really heuristics are just another type of blacklisting Antimalware companies find malware in the wild analyze it and add definitions that antimalware software constantly downloads Whenever you run an application the antimalware software checks to see if it matches a definition and blocks it if it does Antimalware software also incorporates heuristics-based detection Heuristics check to see if a piece of software behaves similarly to known malware It can block new pieces of malware before definitions are available for them but heuristics aren t anywhere near perfect The problem with the blacklisting approach is that it assumes everything is safe by default and then attempts to pick out the known-bad things It would be more secure to flip this upside down assuming everything is dangerous and shouldn t run unless it s been more proven to be safe Antimalware software still works fairly well against random older malware you might encounter online But against newer and smarter attacks antimalware software often falls flat on its face Don t put all your trust in it to protect you READ MORE nbsp

A:The Future of Security Software

"The future of security software isn?t just blacklisting. Instead, it will often be something more like whitelisting" - I agree with this to a point, but yet again you must also look at the point of where technology is heading, computers & mobile devices may just be a myth one day while bio-technology has taken over (as I think it will...) I think a better security precaution should be in place for that, but yet again 40 years from now computers and mobile devices may still be a thing.... who knows...

I might be way off base with this but thought I'd throw the question out there and see what you think.

When a new OS is released (such as W7 from Vista, or W8/8.1 from W7 and so on, then OS specific software often doesn't run correctly. I've experienced that with backup software. What worked with W7 wasn't suited to W8.1, and that in turn would not run with W10.

Now W10 is radically different from all that has gone before because its very foundations can be altered with new builds that are appearing and that will continue to appear in the future.

Would it therefore be reasonable to think that software that is designed for W10 now has no guarantee of performing in the future ? I'm thinking specifically of the kind of program that out of necessity has to integrate itself with the OS at a fundamental level (such as imaging programs and security suites).

Any thoughts ?

A:W10 and its future interaction with 3rd party software.

I would not think so. My guess is that software that's designed for 10 will continue to work for some time to come.

A:What is the procedure to reinstall in the future?

Once you have upgraded to Windows 10 and activated, you are entitled to reinstall the Win 10 into the same computer as often as you want , whenever you want.
What you need to do then is to create a bootable Windows 10 media ( DVD or USB ) which you will use for re-installing.
For now the most current Windows 10 is 10586.
You can use one of the following links to download the ISO file, then burn the iso file to a bootable media,

A:Windows 10 and future CPUs

1 it reads like the processors will not run older Windows versions, but Windows 10 is not giving up support for those processors it runs on now.
2, When you hear that the remaining 9% of public service computers running XP have gone caput overnight in some final eXPloit then you should worry that the same fate will happen to 7. It hasn't, and it won't. If you use Windows 7 and no other vulnerable Windows product like Internet Explorer 10 and earlier, then your 3rd party antimalware etc., should protect you, unless you are an incautious internet user. How often do you get viruses up to now?
Finally, to use Mac OS legitimately you need to buy your hardware from them. If you want to run Linux, there will be little chance of finding new hardware that will not run it, or not finding older hardware that runs it too. If you buy new off the shelf hardware, it will likely have Windows (forget the 10) on it and you will be able to run older Windows on the machine in some capacity, probably as a virtual machine. There are alternative OS flavours, but do you really need another?

Then again, not all things go Microsoft's way, and there are more than one processor manufacturer for desktop, mobile and phone devices, so it will be up for grabs. Who knows what the next must-have revolution in edutainment-infocomms will be?

A:Backup Win 8.1 WITH updates and ?s for future resets

Personally, I have learned the hard way NOT to trust any built-in backup/restore function.

Instead, I would recommend using Macrium Reflect (MR) to do image backups. This provides a FREE version that can be used to image and restore partitions or entire drives.

What I recommend is the following:
1) Download and install Macrium Reflect (MR)
2) Run MR and choose the option: "Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows" to write a full backup to an external drive or USB stick
3) Use the option to create a boot USB stick or CD

I use this all the time and it typically takes less than 10 minutes to do the image backup and about the same time or less to do a restore. Plus, MR has the option to Add a Recovery Boot Menu entry. This allows you then to boot into WinRE, and you can then use that to do a restore -- when you can't boot into Windows!

NOW, you have the means to restore a full working system from the external drive or USB stick in only a few minutes.

Good Luck

Hi!

I'm in a bit of a dilemma. The current Tecra Z50 is extremely close to what I want in a notebook but the thing is, I currently don't really need it and I don't have the time to set it up. So I would buy one and have it lying around until late summer.

If I get one now and there's a new model out in summer, which I like even better, I would be very disappointed but on the other hand if I want to buy one in the summer and there's a new one with less connectors, a glossy screen with one of those extremely high resolutions or maybe without the pointing stick, it would be even worse!

So the question is: What can I expect from the Tecra Z50 in the future? I know that I probably won't get the information I need but I still had to post this.

Thanks!

A:The future of the Tecra Z50?

Future of Tecra Z50?
From my experience, Toshiba releases different notebook series within short spaces of time.
In most cases this applies to the ?everyday home? models like Satellite models.

The product life cycle of notebooks belonging to business segment like for example Tecra or Portege series is much longer? so from my point of few the Tecra Z50 should be available in the next couple of month.

But even if new models would be released, I think that older models should be still provided by some online dealers?

anyways I was looking for a new qosmio version but the latest is haswell+gtx770m which is old hardware for these days.

Is there anyone present on these forums that could give a estimation about when the new version will arrive to west-europe?
Then there is still to hope that the design is further improved with better cooling and the exaust left, the x70 cooling doesnt seem sufficient unless you live in siberia.

with kind regards,

Brian

A:Question about the future of Qosmio X series

Is there anyone present on these forums that could give a estimation about when the new version will arrive to west-europe?

New version?

As far as I know the latest Qosmio model which was released by Toshiba was Qosmio X70-B (in Europe) and X75-B (in USA)

For example the Qosmio X70-B-10T was quipped with an Intel Core i7-4720HQ quad-core CPU from the Haswell generation, AMD Radeon R9 M265X GPU, 17.3-inch full HD display, and DTS stereo speakers from Harman / Kardon. Qosmio X70-B-10T comes with a 1TB SSHD with 8GB of flash memory.

Furthermore the AMD Endure power management technology switches automatically between the dedicated GPU and the integrated Intel HD Graphics and this helps to increase the battery working time.

So from my personal opinion this is still very good gaming notebook… but let’s see what will happen end of 2015 and in 2016…

Has anyone tried installing 32 bit edition of XP on 64 bit architecture.

I'm assuming it would run fine and just not take advantage of the 64 bit.

Anyone know for sure?

A:Best anti virus ware for future laptop.

eset anti virus is very good and runs very light on the system. It has a built in firewall that can notify you when something tries to connect in or out of your computer.

Avg internet security will do the same thing as eset all in one, but used alittle more sytem resources. Its very good though.

Both of these are the paid for versions though. The free software, in my opinion, does not work well, and you will most likely get a virus

There?s some good news for Firefox fans, as Mozilla seems to have finally decided on officially launching a 64-bit version of its browser.

Mozilla has finally reached the conclusion that a non- x86 version of its popular browser is a good way to go. Citing the growing marketshare of x64 OS versions and the fact that both IE and Chrome now offer 64-bit versions, Mozilla will now focus on offering a similar version of Firefox.

Interestingly, another reason Mozilla gives for this change is the fear that Microsoft might retire the x86 version of its OS with the launch of Windows 10, which would leave Firefox behind its competitors.

first off i'm going to explain Why im having trouble removing this virus it was written by some hackers who MAKE their living coding botnets not just anybody and the fact of the matter is this code is not future botnet reinstallers? of the released anywhere yet nor has anyone exposed this new software yet reason being i think theyre keeping a lid on it because it doesnt yet work they way they want it to remember these hackers are in a cut-throat world where the more infected machines they can deliver on a month-by-month basis makes them more money and any they loose to 'competitors' costs them pay -- or even their lives so keep in mind the future of botnet reinstallers? if i have machines that i cant remove the virus from even with total formats there the future of botnet reinstallers? are going to be million machines running this software in the next - years yes i may be acting dramatic but this is a real virus and i cant pinpoint where its coming back from how it's spreading or anything other the future of botnet reinstallers? than certain firewalls can block it from the net at least in part and that it requires an ntfs filesystem to 'live' in most likely the reason it isnt popular yet is their having trouble making it install a full botnet application after re-infection none of my infected machines are having any problems since i installed comodo v firewalls and the one machine that has a few issues with older games im switching to a fat- format since the virus cant live in a fat filesystem yes it Lives in the ntfs filesystem not in a file that can be scanned but in the 'white space' of 'reserved' blocks imagine if av anti spyware had to have an NTFS block reader to detect a virus anyways the logs will be last in this post and sorry but Dss crashes perhaps because of the virus so i just did the panda scan and the hijackthis logs fwiw im running vmware as a webbrowser now ill paste what i put in on the comodo fourms Ok first off this mystery virus is infecting different machines of mine has XP Pro and is patched up to date has xp home full retail again patched up to date has xp home oem and i have drive patched up to date and drive i installed specificially to find out more about this virus that is at sp At the time my systems were first infected they were only at sp level and all of them had XP Corp edition yes very bad having hacked pirated oses so what not everyone has an extra - at the time they buy a computer to allocate to an os and yes computers are getting cheaper every day all of these systems are at least years old at the time they were infected they had file sharing enabled on all three machines and only machines ran quot AVG quot free antivirus the rd had no av software at all currently xp home full and XP pro machines run mcaffee suite and the other one xp home oem runs comodo av well its not even on the net anymore as i do not have internet at my appartment but w e at the time of original infection the primary firewall was a linksys wireless router with zone alarm installed on all machines under the current config all three machines run comodo ver firewall the only anti spyware we used before was lavasoft's free product currently they all have bo clean now for the symptoms first off when windows is installed even on fully low level formatted drive a chkdsk error under ntfs comes that does not go away it is as follows although sometimes they find other problems especially if you havent chkdsk in a while quot Chkdsk Discovered Free Space marked as allocated in the volume bitmap quot Secondly Auto run is disabled magically with no user input whatsoever thirdly when a low level format and reinstall has been done the USB driver goes offline and the system 'hangs' for about minute thereafter the associated chkdsk error pops up prior the the usb going offline the chkdsk returns no error this all happens within a minute of installing windows if i wasnt a gamer i probally wouldnt have gotten chkdsk to run before the eve... Read more

A:the future of botnet reinstallers?

just need to correct myself after ive teted my machines harder.

i did some more testing, there is a more descriptive set of chkdsk errors before the one that repeats forever, i missed it the first time but caught it the second time around.

"\Windows\Prefetch\chkdsk.exe-2cc4c59.pf first allocation unit is not valid. the entry will be truncated." and "\Windows\Prefetch\cmd.exe-087b4001.pf first allocation unit is not valid. the entry will be truncated."
secondly when retesting the 'autoplay' becoming disabled did not happen (i attached a usb hd that had been connected as well to my 3 main machines, i was using an old scrap hd from a long dead system) but the chkdsk errors were still occuring on all machines reguardless of exposure to infected data. i later realized that machine had been networked with the other 2 when i product activated/patched that hd. and that was when autoplay became disabled (if the chkdsk thing is not some wierd sp2 bug that ms is keeping a lid on then its not the 'full' virus that disables autoplay and caused alerts on comodo firewall)

on a side note 3 games which did not work with the patched/autoplay disabled machine work fine on the system where autoplay is not disabled, but still has chkdsk errors.

as for formatting to be specific of what i did i used a old freebsd 2.2.2 cd set to 'erase' the hd, since it replaces the mbr with bootez (a freebsd bootloader) but i do not know if their format util was truly erasing the hds. but remember, i put in a factory sealed drive and had the chkdsk problems. (one drive i bought ~2 years ago failed under warrenty, so they sent out a rmaed drive.) so i dont know that using seagate/maxtor tools to wipe the drive will return any better results. besides the 2 drives that i was using to test were from long ago pcs i used 5-7 years ago or more. kept in a spare parts box... if the chkdsk/cmd programs are being modified on load (the error seems to indicate they had to be truncated) then its either something wrong with windows itself (causing the chkdsk problem) or else the virus is living in some other piece of hardware.

but im pretty sure the virus that is causing games to crash etc was transmitted via the network now. i kept tabs and on the surface all the cmd.exe and chkdsk.exes looked and appeared to be the same, but if the virus is in the filesystem it doesnt need to replace cmd.exe or chkdsk.exe. and i cant figure out why chkdsk would always find that the .pf files for cmd.exe and chkdsk.exe needed to be truncated EVERY time windows was installed.

Hi everyone, I' m sorry I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask for help on this but here's the problem. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and my desktop BSOD'd on me. The last thing I installed on my PC before it BSOD'd was a Netgear wg111v3 Wireless Dongle. I did that about a day ago, so I'm not so sure it's the problem, but it's just the most probable cause.

My PC is custom built (i think i built it around February of this year), here are the specs:
CPU: Athlon IIx4 620 2.6ghz (I overclocked it once to 2.8 but then after a few months I had some problems so I restored it to original setting)
Motherboard: Asus M4A785-M
GPU: Palit GTS 250
RAM: 4GB (2x2) Kingston (i think)

Help please! Thanks!

hi, I know this forum is for infected pc users, but can't find a specific forum for this question.

The question is: if I've a pen disk that has been connected to an infected pc, maybe infected by a rootkit, does a disk formatting completely clean the usb drive or not ? If not what should I do for being sure the pen drive is clean? Can you give me an aswer please ?

Hi, I would like to ask your advice.

I had a "Brave sentry" attack yesterday, I looked up on the net (from another PC) to find out about "smitFraudFix", but it seems like the infected PC is too far gone, I can't download S.F.F, I can't access safe mode, the firewall is de-activated.

I think I will have to wipe & re-install the whole system now, so I was wondering what preventative measures can be taken for the future. I read that disabling "install on demand" is a good idea, I wonder what other advice might be given? What are good anti-virus & anti malware programs? What other defensive measures can be taken?

A:How Do I Avoid Future Virus/malware Infections?

hello and welcome to bleepingcomputerHere are some good anti-virus and anti-malware programs that I prefer and that you might want to download:Anti-virus:AVG antivirusAnti-spyware:superantispywareAnti-spyware:spywareblasterIt's always good to have more than one anti-spyware so if one misses a spyware the other one may catch itAd-aware:AD-awarealso if you want another firewall besides windows firewall you can download comodo firewall: comodo firewall
