Will it affect my earlier desktop settings?

Q: Will it affect my earlier desktop settings?

Dear friends,
I was wanting to open up my desktop CPU, with the case. I wud be disconnecting all the input wires to avoid any kind of shocks. But, I thought, if I wud be removing all its parts I.e. HDD RAMdisk, motherboard... , and if I join them back to its earlier locations (just to get an insight of my CPU in detail), wud it affect my earlier work done on my Desktop? Wud I have to re- install the OS? Will it change any of my earlier used settings in the Desktop?
Please advice...

Preferred Solution: Will it affect my earlier desktop settings?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Will it affect my earlier desktop settings?

Doing this could cause the computer not to "see" the hard drive any longer, thus not being able to boot up properly. Is it really worth doing this?

I am currently on Windows XP sp1, home, and have been unsure about upgrading to sp2.

My ISP is ATT/Yahoo DSL and I have a wireless home network. My desktop connects directly to the router and the laptop connects via wireless. My printer which is connected to the desktop is also accessed by the laptop.

My question is this. Will upgrading to sp2 affect any of my network or ISP settings? Not knowing how my network will be affected is what is keeping me from upgrading both the desktop and laptop.

Do vista power settings on laptops affect just the screen brightness and when it turns off, or does it effect performance itself, such as the processor speed? If they do affect processor speed, by approximately how much (i.e. a percentage).

I'm running a dell xps 1330 with 2gb ram and 2.2 Ghz processor.

Thanks as always,

A:Does changing power settings actually affect performance?

On computers that have processors with SpeedStep (Intel) or Cool'n'Quiet (AMD) it will clock down the CPU when not under load. It can also power down hard drives, etc. It will not slow a computer down in regards to performance.

Edit- You want max battery on your laptop though and having the higher power setting over performance will keep your laptop cooler as well.

Ok I have not done an official backup of win7, although after I get this mess straightened out, I will be using Acronis.

Now I seemed to really messed up trying to delete Adobe Reader & Acrobat and instead of using their uninstall programs, I used Windows Install Cleaner & well, it left some things behind that is prohibiting me from doing a clean install of Acrobat.

So I was wondering if there was any type of default registry in win7 that allows me to reset the computer to an earlier date before my goof up?

A:Best way to reset win7 settings to an earlier date?

control panel \ backup and restore, then pick "recover system settings or your computer" and open System Restore, then just pick a point before you installed adobe acrobat

If you only use acrobat for viewing PDF can I suggest something a bit less obtrusive such as perfect pdf reader

Hi. Sony Vaio, running slowly; I've tried most things suggested here (and thanks!). One post implied that if you have a lot of icons on your desktop, it could slow things down. Is this true? I have 39. Would it improve computer speed/response if I were to consolidate them into a new folder? Many thanks for help!

A:Do desktop icons affect speed?

Yes, I recall from a list of "optimization tweaks" that getting rid of as many desktop icons as possible was an easy way to speed up the boot.

A:Can a virus that affect Windows affect a linux partition on the same PC

(Admins delete my post if I'm not allowed to respond to this topic)

I don't think it can, unless it's a cross-platform malware like the Boonana trojan. Windows malware downloaded on Ubuntu can affect Windows, though (not sure it it has to be moved to the Windows partition manually or not).

I think since Wine is virtualization, it shouldn't affect Ubuntu, and because Ubuntu is a linux/unix distro, it shouldn't be able to run anyway (but don't take my word on that).

Not sure about the last question.

Ok, so we got this used computer and are trying to fix it for my daughter to use. It's an HP, about 3 years old. Running XP. When I turn it on, it comes up fine, then all the icons show up, then BAM! Active Desktop error. Can't click on anything, it's all locked up. So, I tried to restore it to an earlier version, which there are about 10 different bold dates I can choose from. I've tried every one of them, it thinks about it...then says it is unable to restore to that date. Of course, I don't have the original disks that came with it, it was a freebie! Any ideas? I wanted to just format the drive and start over, but how do I get it to dos without going into windows first? Please be gentle with your explainations, I'm not stupid, but I'm not a programmer either.

Using windows10 build 10240 upgraded from each and every single one since the tech preview came out. That means that my account has "hold over" settings from old builds. Currently this account is using a 4x tile grid on the start menu (official default is 3x) and my desktop icons have disappeared. I have created a new account and it seems to be working flawlessly (probably not the right word given win10 is full of bugs, many I just haven't ecountered). So I know creating a new account will fix my problems but I'd like to fix and keep my old account. Does anyone know how to fix those two issues (4x tile grid, no desktop icons) on an account that has been upgraded from earlier builds?Truth can become lie, but if lies become truth we're in trouble.

I have a problem with a change having been made to my desktop, whereby all my icons are permanently highlighted, and there is a new small image on the desktop.

The above occured after I tried copying a weblink to my desktop, and I got a dialog box asking if I wanted an active desktop component or some such. Foolishly I clicked yes.

Can anyone advise me how to undo this change ?

From Googling I have tried right clck / properties / desktop / customise desktop - no luck.

Also control panel / system / advanced / performance / settings / use drop down shadows - this item is unchecked.

Neither have rectified this.

I'm running XP SP2 on a Dell Dimension 8400. When I first set it up, I changed my desktop appearance to Windows Classic and Large fonts. But after I reboot, it sometimes resets itself to the Windows XP default appearance and Normal font size. I use Themes to set everything back when I lose the settings, but it's kind of annoying to have to manually reset the desktop all the time.

Is there something I can change to stop this from happening? I thought it might be a virus or something, but Norton AntiVirus finds nothing. I also use Registry Mechanic and AdAware. Can anyone help?

Hi arat, welcome to TSF...

please try the attached registry tweak as it may help fix the problem. Just unzip it and double click it to merge with your registry then reboot. After you have rebooted, set your desktop and quick launch as you want them to be then reboot again.

I have the WORST TIME with my NVIDIA Control Panel to adjust the desktop color, contrast, video and other settings!! One scene on the monitor, it's too dark so I lighten it. Then, the next page, it's too light, so I darken it! I've never seen ANY "program" where just about all the things I see on my monitor must be independently adjusted. Talk about a nuisance! Is this NVIDIA the ONLY option I have? Is there not a much BETTER way to adjust all the things (that need to be adjusted for lightness, darkness, color, contrast, etc.) by doing it ONE TIME and never have to worry about it again? Or, is this asking for too much? Just a very BIG annoyance.

I have a Toshiba laptop with Windows 8. Whenever I shut it down and restart, the desktop settings get reset. For example, there's a Touch Keyboard option on my taskbar and I choose to remove it. I right-click the taskbar>properties>toolbars>uncheck touch keyboard
After a restart, it comes back. How do I keep that from happening?

A:Desktop settings keep resetting.

This seems like quite unusual behaviour, it is most likely caused by some setting by one of the manufacturer's programs.
You might want to look firstly in the programs installed already by toshiba for the preference that is casuing this, otherwise, a quick fix that may help in your situation would be to just prevent the adding/removal of toolbars.
Beforehand, adjust the toolbar's to the way you want them, with the one you dont want removed. After that, proceed with the steps below.
Search > Right Click gpedit.msc > Open it
In the Local Group Policy Editor. Go to the following directory: User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Desktop
Once there find the option called  "Prevent adding, dragging, dropping and close the Taskbar's toolbars".
Right click this option and click edit
Click the enable checkbox and click ok
That toolbar should no longer appear after restart. If you need to add or remove a different toolbar in the future, just disable, make the changes and re-enable.
Hope this helped.

Good Morning,

I have a Dell Laptop running XP Professional. Occasionally (and I think moreso after shutting my computer into "Standby" mode), it will startup (after putting in unsername and PW) and say "cannot find local settings... [or something similar]" it then boots up a different (the original) desktop background and a limited number of program icons on the desktop, bluetooth settings are not saved, etc.

In the past, when this happened (randomly, maybe once/twice a month), if I had completely shutdown the computer and re-booted it, it would then start up fine...custom desktop background, all my program icons, documents/etc. that I saved to the desktop come up fine, my bluetooth settings are restored, etc....

Well, today, it did the same thing but now did not revert back to my usual desktop/settings upon a simple shutoff/reboot...

Thoughts on what is going on here and a fix?

Thanks in advance!!!

Hi all

My Dad has a new laptop and he is having trouble with his desktop icons.

He likes My Computer on the desktop, so I did the right click 'Show on Desktop' routine, but after a reboot it disappeared.

Also, all of his folder icons disappeared from the desktop.

Auto arrange doesn't stay on either.

I have Windows 7 myself and I didn't have any of these issues.

I advised him not to get Norton but the salesman was very persuasive; he has various Norton stuff running all the time (as they do). Could it be this? It probably isn't in my opinion.

Any help would be great.

I want him to start to enjoy his machine.

A:Please help my Dad - Desktop Icons and General Settings

Hmm, that is indeed a bit strange. But

1. I doubt that Norton has anything to do with it. I use Norton since many years and never had such a problem.

2. Try this - after the 'show on desktop', right click on the icon on the desktop and create a shortcut. Maybe that will stay.

3. If nothing else, arrange the shortcuts in a toolbar. Then they are easily accessible, you can properly arrange them by subject and they will definitely stay around. Toolbars - How to Use in Windows 7 and Vista

Please help. Somehow the desktop area is very low and I can't see it all. When I go to change it through properties>settings>, I can't get to the button because of the size of the screen. The button is just below the bottom of the screen and I cant reach it. I can "move" that window up to see the button, but as soon as i touch the mouse or a key to move the cursor, it returns to the way it was and I can't reach the button again. Is there another way to change it?

There are two options that I can think of. 1) Edit the registry 2) Repair the computer with your installation CD.

A:Desktop tab missing in display settings

There are a few reasons why this might be happening.

You are right - Home does not have a way to adjust Group Policy with a Group Policy Editor, but it the registry still has all the pieces to manipulate even though it must be done through regedit instead of letting the Group Policy Editor manipulate the registry for you.

The .reg file you downloaded and ran addresses one possible reason by adjusting a value in HKCU, but there are other things to check. Remember, malware is sneaky and likes hide and seek.

If you preform a Google seach for: xp desktop tab missing

You will get some hits that include the fix you downloaded, and a couple other registry values that you can check. One more in HKCU and one in HKLM, and some others that I did not try. Some involve using the Group Policy Editor (which you don't have anyway) so skip those!
Reinstallation (or System Restore - which is not a time machine) is a little drastic... Too many easy things to check.

The last time I responded with detailed registry adjustments here, I was advised to please not to do that again, which I understand .

Let us know what you find.

Or; you're being dropped by FW.

If you can (or have the remote user do this) see if you're receiving the packet on the remote end with TCPDUMP.

Stupid question alert:

A:Change desktop settings from laptop?

You might be able to do that with Remote Desktop. Not totally sure, just a hunch. I can instruct you on how to disable Remote Desktop if you like. It enables another Windows user to log in to a different machine and use it as if he or she were actually in front of the remote machine. It can be super-handy, but also a security risk.

The other possibility is an infection.

A:Desktop/settings reset on update

I tried to delete the old admin account, but the computer says built-in accounts cannot be deleted.

After restarting, the original account is still completely ruined -- hardly functions, doesn't load desktop/theme, didn't load transparency, can't install files, etc. It also constantly links itself to C:\Users\TEMP because it is broken.

The new account works fine, but I want to find a way to fix the other account. It cannot be deleted, so I can either just ignore it or find a way to fix it.

Hi All,

New user and my first question to the forum, 1 of PC's at work is having
an issue with RDC, normally I'm able to to log into this computer
from other computers from my work site but I noticed yesterday
I was not able to do this anymore.
After having a look I noticed when you right click on computer
than click on remote settings, under advanced tab there
should be
Remote Desktop
Click an option, and than specify who can connect, if needed.
and than follow by the options, but now it's blank with nothing there.
(see photo) Nothing has been changed to the PC and I'm puzzled to
why this has happened.
Need to get this sorted ASAP so if anyone could help that would be great.

My question is relating to RDC on Windows XP but I'm hoping it applies he same to Windows 7.
I have a server which I usually login to remotely. The server sits on a desk in the office. When I physically login to the server at the desk, I have a screensaver which comes on with a message like "do not turn off", but when I connect remotely,
the screensaver resets to Windows XP logo. The only way to change it back is to login physically at the desktop again and then it works.

I know there are other methods for warning users not to switch off a PC, but is there any known way to ensure the server keeps the same screensaver when it is logged into remotely?

I imagine this is a known issue: I use the desktop view more than the tile view. I set the desktop icon view to "small" and arrange them the way I like. somewhere in the next boot cycle or two, the view reverts to where it was before I tried to arrange it MY way.
is there a cure?

I was working with geekstogo and I used a combofix app and when the popup to paste and send the file for review, it automatically was sent to bleepingcomputer. Can you help?

file was:

C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Administrator\Desktop.\[4][email protected]

A:C:\documents And Settings\compaq_administrator\desktop.\[4][email protected]

You have posted a hijackthis log here and you are receiving assistance.Your HJT Trusted Helper is aware of the file submission and will provide you with instructions as you continue with the malware removal process. There is no need to post about the upload here. That file was submitted to special channel where it will be reviewed by the creator of Combofix. Please refrain from asking for help from others while you are being instructed by someone helping you with a hijackthis log elsewhere. Following advice outside of that post may cause confusion for the Helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. If you had posted your log here, similar rules would apply. We would ask that you refrain from asking for help elsewhere. To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. If you still need assistance after your log has been reviewed and you have been cleared, please start a new topic. If you have any questions or if the poster of the other log is not you, please PM me or another moderator and we will re-open this topic. Thanks for your cooperation and good luck.

Hello everyone,

First to all sorry for my poor english. I'm installing and configuring truecrypt on windows 7 home premium. Truecrypt as you know is use for maintain secure the data for the user so i implemented truecrypt in the partition D. I have installed windows 7 in the drive C. I moved the folder desktop, documents, pictures and downloads of windows 7 to this drive D that belongs now to truecrypt. My problem comes when i restart the system i can not keep the taskbar with my shortcuts of chrome, thunderbird and others programs. I found out ins this forum some tools to restore and backup the taskbar but it doesn't work well because at the end i see the shortcuts but it doesn't work any one of them.

Please help,

A:Backup and restore desktop settings in truecrypt

The shorcuts (on C: drive) will not work because the targets (documents, pictures, download folders) reside in the encrypted volume on D: drive. You need to mount the encrypted volume after booting the computer in order for the shortcuts to access the targets.

All of my view settings seem to stick fine, except when I choose File - Open - Desktop in some application. Then it's Tiles view instead of my Details view, as saved for every other folder.

Win 7 x64
I already tried resetting Folder view options as per Folder View - Set a Default for All Folders

A:remember view settings for File - Open - Desktop

try to restore windows and see if that helps
