Replacing a Windows 2003 AD DS server with a 2008 R2 AD DS server

Q: Replacing a Windows 2003 AD DS server with a 2008 R2 AD DS server

We had:

1) 1 Windows Server 2003 running Active Directory services to manage logon and permissions for file sharing.
2) 15 workstations.

We now want to have:

1) 1 Windows Server 2008 R2 server running Active Directory services to manage logon and permissions for file sharing.
2) 15 same workstations, with their same user profiles.

So I joined the 2008 R2 server to the domain, and then used the dcpromo tool to make it a domain controller.

Problem is, whenever I take the old server offline, (the 2003 one) everything flips out, logons are slow, and the 2008 server gives people trying to access shared files weird errors like that the server that authenticated them cannot be contacted, and asks them to log in again with their username and password before accessing shared files on the server.

What did I do wrong? I must be forgetting something.

Preferred Solution: Replacing a Windows 2003 AD DS server with a 2008 R2 AD DS server

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

1. Transfer all FSMO roles to your 2008 R2 server
2. Uninstall AD on 2003 server
3. You can now permanently take 2003 server offline

Hello I created the following performance counter using logman exe nbsp logman exe counters incorrectly Server Windows correctly creates performance on 2003 but Server Windows Logman 2008/2012 on create counter US Triton Perf Log -b -e -r -s server -si frequence -cf folder server txt -f logtype nbsp -o C local logs Perfout Server --a -v mmddhhmm nbsp -rf nbsp max Logman creates performance counters on Windows Server 2008/2012 correctly but incorrectly on Windows Server 2003 duration When I do this across multiple servers specifically for Windows Servers the counter is created to repeat and run everyday at PM and stops running everyday at PM This works perfectly fine as intended However When I do this for a Windows server my created counter is very different For example in this case I have set to the counters to start at AM and end at PM because I have set a maximum duration of hours the job terminates and begins on the next day since Logman creates performance counters on Windows Server 2008/2012 correctly but incorrectly on Windows Server 2003 I have the repeat option on However this does not apply to our server logman creates the job to run once a week in this case it would be on a Wednesday In addiiton I noticed that the job doesn't not even start at it's indented time It actually does not start at all I also notice that the jobs on all windows servers are created in a pending status which then prevents me from removing Logman creates performance counters on Windows Server 2008/2012 correctly but incorrectly on Windows Server 2003 the counter remotely nbsp I would like to know if windows is capable of working like my win servers using logman and if historically the job has to be kicked off through scheduled task nbsp Both Jobs are using the same criteria but are created differently The top photo was created on a windows server and the bottom photo was created on windows server Am I missing something here FYI I have a script to automate across servers so when I deployed this it turned out about servers were actually running as intended and a whole bunch of them were in pending status and all stopped nbsp I appreciate any response on this issue

Downloaded RC1 to install it on an IBM R40 (1GB RAM), which had previously held Windows Server 2003.

Select booting from optical drive through the Access IBM button and selecting the optical drive; DVD boot fails, and Server 2003 comes up again despite selecting boot from optical.

Erase the hard drive with EASUS, reformating to FAT32 (so I know it's wiped).

Booting again from the DVD with RC1 fails, with the code Sfh> onscreen.

How do I install RC1?

Hi All,

I am planning to buy Dell Precision 650/670 with approximately the following configuration:

DELL PRECISON 650
Intel Processor XEON 2.8GHZx2 (Dual)
Intel Motherboard 7505 CHIPSET
2 GB ECC DDR1 RAM
Supported Interfaces : IDE/SATA/SCSI
Harddisk: Optional
Optical : Optional
AGP Graphic Card
300 Watt POWER SUPPLY

I plan to run a server application on these machines, on either Windows 2003 or 2008 Enterprise Server.

I have searched the dell.com website and cannot find any drivers for these models for Windows 2003/2008 operating system.

So I just want to know that are there any working drivers (for all the system components) available for these models for Windows 2003/2008 operating system.

Has anyone been using these systems in a similar setup/environment.

Please share the drivers/links any other performance considerations necessary.

Thanks for your help and guidance.

Hi,

I have a set of 5 machines - 2 desktops (one being a thin client and the other to function as a 'server' ) and 3 notebooks. I was wondering what was the difference b/w the 2 versions Windows Server 2003 and Windows Small Business Server 2003. Is it true one cannot use a thin client but need a regular cpu setup to use Small Business Server 2003 ?

There is a difference in costs and since i have windows 2000 on the desktops and xp on the notebooks wondered if i needed to shell out so much more $$ for the Windows Server 2003 . I plan to put in a wireless networking system to link all the 5 machines.

Thanks in advance for any and all advise.

A:Solved: Difference b/w Windows Server 2003 and Small Business Server 2003

Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server has the following restrictions:
- Only one computer in a domain can be running Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server.
- Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server must be the root of the Active Directory® forest.
- Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server cannot trust any other domains.
- A Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server domain cannot have any child domains.
- Each additional server must have a Windows Small Business Server 2003 client access license (CAL). You can use CALs for each user or for each device.
The standard edition of Windows Small Business Server 2003 includes Windows Server 2003 technologies, including fax service, firewall service, and remote-access service. Additionally, it includes Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, enhanced tools for server monitoring and administration, and an out-of-the-box solution for internal Web sites. The standard edition is ideal for customers who do not require the higher-level functionality included in the premium edition

The premium edition includes everything in the standard edition, plus Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000, and Microsoft FrontPage® 2003. The premium edition is ideal for small businesses with more demanding IT needs, such as data-intensive line-of-business applications, or advanced firewall and Web-caching capabilities

The standard edition has most of the stuffs inside.

Hi guys What free Antivirus software for servers What free anti-malware would NOT be a good idea Info My friend has purchased a Poweredge server to act as a fileserver for a private network not connected to the internet He uses laptops at the most to access files on the server However at some points he will update Windows Server Server ? Free Antivirus e.g. for Server Windows 2008 plus odd bits by temporaily hooking up to the Internet and obviously leave himself open Free Server Antivirus ? e.g. for Windows Server 2008 to malware etc for a short time The cost Free Server Antivirus ? e.g. for Windows Server 2008 of server Antivirus is very high and usually effective for workstations upwards and obviously he would appreciate keeping costs down Questions I would appreciate thoughts on ideas for avoiding a costly solution Also if he got Malware on it e g Rootkit or Delta would current Bleeping Computer tools e g Rkill RogueKiller etc still work on the server - or does it require another approach I am asking fior advice BEFORE he gets started while options are open Thanks in advance guys

A:Free Server Antivirus ? e.g. for Windows Server 2008

The answer is fairly simple. Just read the details on the site -
Microsoft Security Essentials is available for small businesses with up to 10 PCs.

• Microsoft Security Essentials:
Microsoft updated it’s free Anti-Virus solution at the end of 2010 to support Windows 2008/R2.
This is easily one of the better free offerings as Microsoft has updated this solution to complete directly with some of the biggest solutions, such as Mcafee and Symantec paid versions.

When downloading, simply choose Windows Vista / Windows 7, as Microsoft has yet to update the website.http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

I'm trying to decide between Windows Home Server and Windows Server 2008 R2 for my home server PC. Ordinarily it would be a clear cut choice, but I've got a free copy of Server 2008 R2 through my academic MSDN subscription. I'd like to avoid spending extra money if Server 2008 R2 would do the job. But I'm willing to buy Home Server should it prove necesary. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

A:Windows home server vs Server 2008 R2

Server 2008 R2 is a more fully functional product. You will be able to do similar things, but it might be a little more involved getting it set up and working. Plus, if you are interested in IT, you could use the Server 2008 R2 experience....but you won't get hired for your knowledge on Windows Home Server.

My vote is Server 2008 R2 without a doubt.

Hi all Have been a LONG LONG user of Linux as a server hosting VM's XP W mix and file print sharing I used to avoid MS like the plague as far as SERVER environments are concerned - probably because my first experince was Windows NT Windows NeanderThal or Windows No Thanks which was SO HORRIBLE that it put me off Windows servers for ages Note I'm using a server in a HOME for server Linux Windows or Server 2008 environment where we have around machines most of which are actually mine for testing -- not a corporate environment which has other considerations The problem now with the latest Linux distros that they are trying to be quot A Better Windows 2008 Server or Linux for server Windows than Windows quot You can of course customize them but I haven't got the time or patience to do this any more To select what packages to install leave out now is a pain and if Windows 2008 Server or Linux for server you do it wrong the chances are the system will give errors I've looked at the new SUSE -- slick and polished - bit I don't NEED quot an alternative Windows quot I've just been looking at Windows Server R got it from Technet and I'm REALLY IMPRESSED Windows 2008 Server or Linux for server with it so far I've installed the STANDARD version - you don't need datacenter or Enterprise version for a home server It runs vmware server on it just fine although I might go the whole hog and use the Hyper-V virtualisation -- need to do a bit more research I'm quite happy letting MS do the updates than having to mess around with Kernel compiles etc Incidentally as a HOME server there are some considerations that you might want to do to make it more like a Desktop OS than a pure server for example add multi-media to it This guy does a great job at this Convert your Windows Server R to a Workstation - Multiboot Installation W VM's run just fine on W server they should as there is a lot of common code Cheers jimbo

A:Help choose: Windows Home Server 2011 vs. Windows Server 2008 R2

Honestly, I use both in their proper settings, and unless you have a domain at home with multiple users, Windows Server 2008 R2 is overkill...and would require much more tweaking and add-in apps to do what you want. Given your write-up, WHS 2011 is the way to go. It does much of what you want out of the box, and is designed for people who don't want to become server admins (or at least not be forced to).

A:Redirecting of desktop using GPO from server 2003/2008 won't work

I believe what you are referring to is your roaming profiles aren't being pulled down onto the windows 7 machines? If that's the case, this is expected behavior if you haven't set it up yet. The configuration for roaming profiles for a windows 7 machine is not the same as it has been in the past and requires a few extra steps. Also of note, a users XP profile will not push down to a 7 machine and vice versa. If they'll be logging in to both 7 and XP machines, they'll need two different roaming profiles created and maintained. One for XP, and one for Win7.

Currently we are on an NT network with a few 2000 servers tossed in. Today I learned that the plan is to migrate everything to Linux. Lets assume that this only applies to the servers and that the users will still operate with 98/nt/2000/xp. What are your thoughts on this?

I put this in this forum for a reason. Because I'd rather get the advice from 2000 and 2003 experts who know what Linux cannot replace than to hear the Linux fanboys and anti-Microsoft activists praise it to the high heavens.

What would your concerns be if this was done on your network? What problems have you encountered if you'd tried this? Or what successes? Know of any businesses that have done this successfully?

Please give me your feedback

Thanks!

A:Non Admin not able to connect OPC server in Windows Server 2003

From what I've read on this thread, you'll need to set computer-wide DCOM security permissions. You'll want to peruse that thread.

On another note, this isn't really the best spot for this question. An error message isn't a crash, hang or bsod, and the situation is more relevant to specifically the Windows Server section (even though OPC servers can and often do exist in many client versions of Windows). You'll be able to receive more help there, as it's pertinent to your needs.

We have a Windows 7 Pro laptop that can't see any of the 300 or so Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Machines.

It can, however, see all (around 13) Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7 Machines that are on the network. Using \\ServerName\Share doesn't connect, and they don't show up on the network map.

It can ping the servers though. They ping by hostname and by ip address. Other Windows 7 Pro Laptops don't have this same problem!

Additional Info:
They are all joined to the domain; servers, laptaps, etc.

A:Windows 7 Computer can't see Server 2003 Server

My problem is when i join in 2003 domain server i get the msag

"An attempat to resolve the DNS name of a domain controller in the domain being joined has failed.
Please verf=ify this client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resolve DNS names name in
the target domain. for information about network troubleshooting, see windows help "

tell me what i have to do! 10Q

Just set up server 2008 r2 on a older box I had that I was using for a few things. Tried Linux but became tThanks of a pain for such simple tasks. Here is what I'm using it for.

Csgo server
Mumble server
File/backup
Media server?

My main concern was for media server to stream to few devices in the house. I was thinking plex. Does anyone have any other ways I can go about it.

Thankd

A:Server 2008 for home server... Opinions please.

Not sure what opinions you want. All I can say is that you don't need server 2008 R2 to complete your desired tasks. Any basic Windows client OS should work.

EDIT: It should be noted that Windows Server OS's are enterprise standards therefore a lot of home license applications will not install unless it is open source. You will need to purchase enterprise licenses of software for them to be installed on the server. This is particularly important with Anti-Virus solutions.

Hello all I m not sure if this is an operating system question or more of a software development question Anyway I have a legacy COM service a COM server 2003 Server execution Windows - connecting when on service DCOM "Server failed" that runs as a windows service that was written for Windows NT I have managed to use the service on both Windows and Windows XP unchanged However I now wish to run the service on a Windows Server machine and I can t seem to DCOM service on Windows Server 2003 - "Server execution failed" when connecting get it to work This is what happens - Install the service and set it to log on using a domain account Start the service from the services msc applet Start the client application and connect to the service At this stagte the client applicaiton freezes for approximately seconds and DCOM service on Windows Server 2003 - "Server execution failed" when connecting then returns with the error message quot Server execution failed quot I ve also tried using the client whilst the service is stopped In this case when I connect the service is started but I get the same error The development team also provided a standalone application that hosts the exact same COM objects mainly for debugging purposes If I use the standalone application everything works fine Its all very strange Does anyone have any idea what the cause might be And preferably a solution Thanks Kep nbsp

A:DCOM service on Windows Server 2003 - "Server execution failed" when connecting

I found the answer.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroup...-DC48AB0DA5C9&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us

The above discussion says that a service must enter a running state before a COM server calls CoRergisterClassObject. So I guess its a development problem.

Not sure why it only manifests on Windows Server 2003 though.

A:Windows Server 2003 as VPN server

Information for how to configure a Windows2003 VPN server can be found at:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/w3k_vpn_server.htm

You don't need to make any changes or additions to shares in regards to VPN client's being able to access previous shares on the server. Whatever you have assigned for the LAN access can work for VPN.

A:Offline Folder sync issue, Win 7 Client Server 2003 Flie Server.

I've seen the complaints about this problem but with no clear resolution. There are some hot fixes listed that may help, updating to Windows 7 SP1 is supposed to help in some cases but nothing seems for certain.

No way for me to recreate this problem but apparently others have the same problem.

I'm having issues finding the location of en expired certificate that one of my LDAP servers responds with during an LDAPS bind attempt.

I'm using Linux's ldapsearch to perform specific tasks during user creation but recently discovered the certificate expired. I have renewed said certificate and placed it in the personal store on that ldapserver but after debugging the SSL connection it still responds with the previously expired certificate.

Can anyone tell me where this certificate would be stored on Windows Server 2003. I've found multiple post regarding the store in 2008 but that does not exist in 2003. I've searched the whole store using certutil trying to match the serial on this certificate but can't find it anywhere.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

A:Setting up Pix 515E in front of ISA Server 2004 and Exchange Server 2003

Here, I scrapped your config. NAT bad/static bad/conduit bad/access-list bad.

no fixup protocol smtp
nameif int xxx outside security 0
nameif int xxx inside security 100
nameif int xxx dmz security 80
icmp permit any outside echo-reply
icmp permit any outside unreachable
icmp permit any inside
icmp permit any dmz
global (outside) 1 int
nat (inside) 1 172.17.0.0 255.255.0.0 32768 16483
route outside 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 65.77.78.1 1
static (inside,dmz) 172.17.0.0 172.17.0.0 255.255.0.0
static (dmz,outside) 172.18.0.2 65.77.78.48 netmask 255.255.255.255 << Can't have same IP as interface**
access-list internet permit tcp any host 65.77.78.48 eq 80
access-list internet permit tcp any host 65.77.78.48 eq 443
access-list internet permit tcp any host 65.77.78.48 eq 25
access-list internet permit icmp any any eq echo
access-list internet permit icmp any any eq echo-reply
access-list internet permit icmp any any eq unreachable
access-list internet permit icmp any any eq source-quench
access-group internet in interface outside
access-list dmz permit ip host 172.18.0.2 any << *Read note 1
access-group dmz in interface dmz
access-list inside permit ip any any
access-group inside in interface inside

The above config will nat 172.18.0.2 to 65.77.78.48. You can't static NAT an entire IP to the same as a global (your interface). You can only do this if you NAT specific ports.

The above config will allow internet to reach 65.77.78.48 via TCP 80/443/25. I can only assume you're using ISA for EFE server, and maybe proxy. (Not an ISA fan)

The above config allows your ISA server carte-blanche access. In essence, it's a DMZ by name only. Don't fool yourself.

Don't use conduits, they're deprecated.

Don't use a firewall to permit "any" to your ISA server, actually use it to block inbound ports.

Also, your ISA server shouldn't/can't have two NIC's in the same subnet. That's a bad idea on 10 different levels. IF you're using your ISA server (blech) as EFE / reverse proxy for OWA, and outbound proxy - you might as well keep it on the same subnet as your Exchange server (inside, I'm assuming.) Again, 10 different reasons why it's a flawed security plan.

If this is simply an EFE server or reverse proxy, make sure you don't keep the ISA server part of any AD domain, stick it in the DMZ, and restrict what hosts it's allowed to see on the network that you're trying to protect.

Regards.

I have done the MS Support site "recommendations", but the Server is pointing to itself for the DNS and the IP address and all that are fine. Not sure why or what is going on here. I can't seem to stop it.

Well we're finally upgrading our server from Windows NT to Windows 2003. Is there any way to import/export all of my data onto the new server? Or should I just share everything I have on NT and then just copy/cut all the information and paste it onto 2003? I'm just trying to figure out what will be the easiest way to move everything since I have about 700 users on NT lol. I really don't want to type all the names in again on 2003....Thanks in advance! :approve:

I have two domain controllers with different domain names but on the same subnet and with active directory installed. One domain controller is win 2000 and the other is win 2003. The computers are in a workgroup the users don't log on but are connected to the win 2000 box with shares to a program. If I take active directory off the win 2000 box and demote will that affect the computers that are In a workgroup connected to the shares? I want to install all the programs and shares on the new win 2003 box but one computer win not let me log on to the win 2003 box it says no domain available. What can I do to slowly migrate the programs and shares to the new server?

A:FTP and VPN into Windows Server 2008

the Virtual server is run under a specific user-id; I think you need that id and password

<ctl><alt>del will get the task manager and the column name User Name is what you need.

scroll to the process controlling the VM

you may need to alter the settings for the VM to force it to run under another
specific user which you can set the pwd
create new account
set new password for it
login to that account to create the %profile% areathen assign the VM to run under that login

Can I install Windows server 2008 R2 on my external hard drive so that I can use it as means to practice network on my laptop?

A:Windows Server 2008 R2

Windows switches from the bios usb drivers to it's
own during boot, which would cause a usb drive
installation to crash.
I would suggest you consider using some virtual machine
software so you can run it from an image on your windows drive.

A:windows server 2008 rc

There are lots of differences. One is a client (win7) and 1 is designed to be a server (2008). The server offers various basic network services such as DHCP, DNS, WINS, VPN, Active Directory, Certificate Services, IIS Web Server, FTP Server, etc. Server 2008 is far more expensive to buy licenses for.

Click Start, right-click Computer [or My Computer], click Properties, should tell what you have and will include whether it's a 32-bit or 64-bit version. A 64-bit computer can run either 32-bit or 64-bit OS [not at the same time] and either 32-bit or 64-bit programs but a 32-bit machine is limited to 32-bit software.

Hello all,

I am the new IT guy for a small business, and their server doesn't have an AV program. I'm wondering if there are any worthwhile free AV programs (which I would much prefer) for Windows Server 2008 , or if I should ask the owner to invest in one. Currently the company has AVG (some free and some licensed, I guess) on most client machines. Their system as a whole is a mess, but it's a new server domain that hosts some shared files and I'd like to keep it protected. Advice?

Thanks!

Looking for some advice regarding adding an email client to our server. Rather than just jump in and install a copy of Outlook, I wanted to check if there are any similar/better alternatives I could look at. We have recently installed some Project Management software that requires this for raising invoices, so integration across all users is important, in case that makes a difference to what options I can consider

Hello,

I have a dedicated windows server 2008 r2 enterprise.

I am running an SSTP VPN but only have 2 IP address to connect to the internet on.

My issue is that one of the IPs is for the IIS7 etc and the other is for VPN use.

How can I apply the same IP to more than one user allowing them to connect all at one.

There are in total about 5 users who want to use the VPN service and I dont really want to pay

For extra IPs due to the price.

Question?

How do I apply the same IP to all accounts and allow them to connect and all use the same IP at once.

want to make communicate all the clients of "Server B" with "Server A".....

A:Multiple Windows Server 2008 R2

Make sure Routing is enabled on Server B - https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...(v=ws.10).aspx

Then if still not working (I believe it should), try adding the static route on Server B (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...(v=ws.10).aspx):

Command is:

Code:
route add destination mask subnetmask gateway metric costmetric if interface
route add -p ServerA-IP-towards-Internal-A-Network mask Internal-A-subnetmask ServerB-IP-towards-Internal-A-Network

Just an example would be, assuming IPs are set like this for your network
route add -p 172.20.0.1 mask 255.255.0.0 172.20.0.254

It is an 0xD1 error citing tcpip.sys (which is windows network stack driver system file); It would be prudent if you attach at least five of latest minidumps for analysis with your next post. In the interim, please check whether your network (NIC) drivers are upto date.

Hi I hope I'm posting in the right section Especiall since this is windows based forum I had near the same dilemma a few years back and now I have the opportunity to get a server and some client computers for cheap from an office closing I'm being offered either a dual core work station that have windows server loaded or a quad 2008 Windows r2, or server 2011 core server with server small business Then some workstations with windows I pretty much need some advice and path of direction because I'm beyond rusty with server and I only helped a friend installed it a while back What I want accomplished is to be able to do the following Log off one workstation as a certain user account then log back on through another workstation with the same account and have access to all my previously saved work Windows server 2008 r2, or 2011 maybe virtualization have certain network drives setup for each user account Setup a vpn to synchronize certain folders Have the user accounts and data on the server setup printing limits Pretty much Even though I'm not there yet in the real world I'm trying to emulate an office network Currently I have routers Windows server 2008 r2, or 2011 and a switch The main router has on dd-wrt and handles dhcp and the other router is pretty much an extension Any advice and help is appreciated I'm leaning towards the dual because it's cheaper but I can try to sell my laptop to get some money for the quad core Can I also create quot guest quot like accounts that have no access to certain items and will not attach all drives Do I have to install the programs on the local computer or should I install them on the server Is this something I should do in another os like linux I was thinking windows server since its pretty much a windows network and since it's being included So far what i'm thinking for the network drives is a logon script but don't know where to have it set up on I'm thinking that if everything is done through the server then I can deploy it via the active directory user list maybe They also have some terminals there but since I have a few desktops I don't think I'm interested I do have a bit of curiosity on how those are setup

Boot from your Windows 7 DVD and do a Startup Repair.

You might also try EasyBCD (it helps manage dual boots). Download and install on your working OS. Use Advanced settings to add Windows 7 and configure it as a dual boot

Hello Guys This is a great forum and I'm really glad to be a part of it So far I've just Server Windows 2008 Installation been just reading posts but never really posted but I thought it's Windows Server 2008 Installation time I did since I need some guidance I'm a Technical Analyst so I'm pretty technical However I've never worked with Windows Server In other words I have done my MCSE and know how to work around Windows Server I might sound dumb but I have to ask this question I'm running Windows Build RC x as my main OS I have a powerful laptop so I'm not worried about the requirements I also have tons of important data on this laptop so it's important that I do not erase any data while installing Server My question to you guys is - How do I install Windows Server Dual Boot i e Create a partition and install it on that Virtualize Install Vmware Server or use Microsoft Virtual PC The reason why I want to install Windows Server is because I want to test it out play around with it and learn more as I plan to be a Network Administrator so this is my first time pretty much building or installing a server On the other hand I downloaded VMware Server but unfortunately I'm unable to install it as I keep getting the following error - Setup cannot continue The Microsoft runtime DLL installer failed to complete installation Please advise Thanks in advance - lukybandit

A:Windows Server 2008 Installation

My preference with multi-booting any OSs is to only install one OS per harddrive, with all other harddrives disconnected during the installation. This permits using the F8 boot menu as a means of selecting the OS to boot to. I have tried a number of boot loader programs, and every one of them caused problems, and when a boot loader goes wrong, it can effect all OSs, not just one.

I have heard alot of people that were happy with VMWare, and it may be just fine...I don't know, because I have never used it. The only way that I might, is if I had insufficient harddrives to handle the load.

I followed the helpful guides on here to get a bootable USB flash drive that installs any version of Windows 7, either platform, and it's been working out great.

Now, am I crazy for thinking I've seen a guide on how to add Windows Server 2008 R2 to the mix? For some reason, I thought it was possible, but I'm not seeing any guides for it.

I have installed Windows Server 2008 on one of my hard drives. It works and feels awesome. However there is one issue that I cannot resolve.

I have two PC's in my home that share the same internet connection. When running XP Pro both computers are able to access the internet with no problems however when I switch to the Windows Server 2008 on the host computer the PC that is running XP Pro can not access the internet.

The problem is when I look at the NICs the one for the other PC says "Network Cable is Unplugged" but it's not. Like I stated before it works fine if I reboot and use Windows XP.

Is there some setting within server 2008 that I need to change to correct this? The NIC card in question is using NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller and the drivers that Windows server has assigned.

Someone with some knowledge please help

Thanks

I have a client who has an existing Server 2000 domain. He is running two Windows 2000 servers in his domain. What he's looking to do is to replace the master domain controller,(the server which was first brought up and hence contains the master copy of the domain database).

I believe that since this is going to be a completely new server and running Server 2003 standard edtiion I believe, that I'll need to first take everyone out of the domain, demote the second domain controller to a stand-alone and then demote the master domain controller which effectively dissolves the domain. Then after bringing the brand new server up, recreate the domain and then the secondary domain controller and join everyone back into domain (new SID but same domain name).

Does this sound correct-could anyone confirm whether this is correct?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Not sure if this is the correct forum. In the past I could use SCOPY to move users files from a File server (NT4 server) to a Windows 2000 server. From what I understand SCOPY does not work properly with 2003. Does Server 2003 have a similar utility to pring in files and retain security permissions ?

Hello.
I've encountered a problem with my little home server. Sometimes (Mostly when i'm not even using the server) it just crashes to BSOD.
Some weeks ago i borrowed a server Network Controller. It didn't fit properly in PCI slot. It was longer than the slot. But i was told that it would work just fine.. It did, until this happened. I thought 'Okay - i doesn't work', so i took out the card again, i jumped CMOS, but the problem persisted. I've tried to format, but it didn't make anything different.
It would be awesome if can put the Server Network Controller back into the machine.

I run Windows Server 2008 r2 x64 on this machine.

Here's a .dmb report: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2anelfk3v6l2k5e/bsod1.txt

Hi,

I recently got my hands on a copy of Windows Server 2008. I currently have it set up as a DNS Server and Active Directory. I have two laptops running XP Professional as a client and joined the the servers domain. I have no problem logging in with User names on both but some policy's don't get applied like Software Deployment and Mounting Network Drives. I have the server set up as a Windows Server 2003 or higher server.

A:BSOD Windows 2008 Server - minidumps

The two most important dumps out of the recent 5 you provided are 0x4E: PFN_LIST_CORRUPT and 0x1: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT.

The former is probably the strongest error code that points to corrupted memory and that is exactly what it stated as your system crashes.

The second error cited hardware_RAM as the cause. So between the two you need to test your memory with Memtest 86+. Do you have an IT department that can do this? It's not difficult to use at all if you don't.

The general availability of Windows Server 2008 R2 has brought to the table a variety of complex offerings in terms of pricing and licensing which customers might find difficult to navigate. In this regard, Microsoft has taken the necessary steps in order to ensure that companies looking to leverage the latest iteration of Windows Server for their infrastructures will be able to benefit from an insight into purchase costs as well as the license options available. ?Windows Server 2008 R2 Licensing Overview? is a guide put together by the company and offered via the Microsoft Download Center.

Hi there
available if you want to test it you can get a download via TECHNET SUBSCRIPTION.

Of course you can't use the technet download in a commercial organisation - but for developers etc who want experience in using etc etc then a technet subscription ~250 - 300 USD is a NO BRAINER IMO.

Also good for HOME users who want to learn about installing and using Servers.

If you look for promo codes you can probably get a discount too on your technet subscription.

Incidentally Students *might* be able to get a free or cheap version of W2008 Server too - same conditions not for commercial use of course.

Note the download from Technet doesn't have an expiry unlike the Free Trial download and you can use several copies.

Cheers
jimbo

A:Windows Server 2008 AD & WSUS Errors

Hi acurasd,

Improper DNS configuration in your Server causes a lot of networking issue including GPO and other things.
Make sure that DHCP is enabled and configured from your Win08 Server, disable DHCP from your router if you have not.

For your Server (Main DC), here's a proper config:
192.168.1.5 --> Static IP of Server
255.255.255.0 --> Subnet
192.168.1.1 - Default Gateway

192.168.1.5 - DNS - You have to point the DNS Address to the Server itself.

In DNS Manager from your Win08 Server, right click on the Server Name, choose Properties, locate Forwarders Tab and add the DNS Resolvers here. If you don't know those DNS's you may call your ISP.

Assign DHCP to all Client PC's on your network, match the ipconfig /all from your Server, make sure that the Client PC has a DNS of 192.168.1.5, Def. Gateway of 192.168.1.1 and Subnet of 255.255.255.0.

Now, test your GPO and WSUS, see if issue persist. Pls. keep us posted.

We have since found with some help a dodgy service.  Here is the techs report.

we found the following:

Unverified file running as a service:
C:\Windows\SYSWOW64\scclient.exe
This is most likely a dodgy file, have renamed it to VIRUSscclient.exe.zz It was running as a service called "Network. Tcp Port Sharing Service". This is disabled now.

Startup looks ok.

I have changed the security permissions on the following folders from C:\Windows :

download
claymore
mng
victoria
ric

They all have DENY permissions for everything except CREATOR USER

We'll keep an eye on it to see if it's clean.

Prior to this I found an ftp process running in taskmanager with files located in c:\windows\download.  as soon as I killed the service the files vanished.

Hey guys and ladies So i have scoured the forums looking for answers to my problem and have yet to get a definitive fix It may just be 2008 Windows Profiles Server with in User Help me though lol So I am an IT technician for some schools and i have just implemented a new server It is running Windows Server My client machines are running windows in the domain I have created all my user accounts already Help with User Profiles in Windows Server 2008 and set everything up However i have created one universal Student Account for all students to login with Heres my issue The students only have access to computers in our computer lab We have about machines in there and they run Windows Pro So lets say one student logs in and adds a bunch of items and shortcuts to the desktop Now all client machines also have these junk icons on their desktops when another user logs in on any machines in the Help with User Profiles in Windows Server 2008 lab under the student profile Is there something i can do to fix this And since i have already created the Student Account can anything i apply help to reverse what they have already done ie added a pile of shortcuts to the desktop etc I tried logging into a client machine under the student profile and in their default roaming profile deleted all the desktop icons i even tried locally changing the ntuser dat to ntuser man after i had deleted the icons but as soon as i log out and back in the icons all return I assume this is because the roaming profile desktop changes are stored server side on the share So I also tried locating the ntuser dat file for the student profile on the network path where i assumed the profiles are stored in Student V but there is no ntuser dat at that location only an ntuser ini file just need some help to figure out what im doin wrong Ideally i would like to prevent the student account from being able to edit anything on the desktop or delete anything off it as well I have no problem creating a new student account as well since no important info has been stored yet on this profile but i would like to do it correctly this time so any info is greatly appreciated And if i didn't explain things very well feel free to ask me any additional questions if it will help you guys help me Thanks for your time P S i hope that even though this is a server question its ok in the windows forums If not i apologize

The reason the Icons return is because i believe you are using a Citrix environment, if you was to look into your Citrix server farm under the Server they are connecting to have a look at there roaming profile there, it may be a wise idea to limit their privileges so they cannot save stuff on their desktop.
