Random FPS drops in LoL and Dota 2

Q: Random FPS drops in LoL and Dota 2

For the past couple of months, I've noticed an FPS drop across all my games. I usually play games like League of Legends and DotA 2 so they aren't really CPU heavy. I thought maybe it could be overheating. This is currently my fan status:

PC Specs:
Manufacturer: HP
Processor: AMD Phenom 8550 Triple-Core 2.20 GHz
Memory: 3GB RAM
HDD: 640GB
Video Card: GeForce 9500 GS

Not great, but it should be more than capable of running these types of games, they're not high end on graphics.

I've tried cleaning inside a couple of times.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is that reading at idle?

If so, you have some worryingly high GPU temperatures. You should try cleaning the dust from GPU fan/heatsink. The CPU temperatures are also pretty mediocre, so I'd clean the dust from that fan as well.

So basically how the title is.

My internet would drop out/freeze. Router doesn't indicate any change in service. I plug my laptop into the modem, and have prime speeds.

Restart the router. Works for awhile.
Reinstalled the firmware manually on the router.
Set the Channel off of "Auto" and put on various options of 9, 10, 11 to avoid clashes with other networks.

Freezes. Now the router indicates there's no connection. Drag the cord out of modem and test. Prime speeds.

Okay, screw this - I went and bought a new router yesterday because, sure, that Belkin one was 2-3 years old. Set it up with same channel settings, etc.
Same.
Freaking.
Thing.

I have a laptop that runs a VPN (for work) that uses it, plus multiple iphones (3) and ipads (2) an AppleTV and a Samsung smart TV.

Like, help me please here.

A:Internet Drops Out, Consistent Speed with Modem, New Router - no solution

OK, but lets solve on thing at a time 1) ignore the VPN at work and let's get the home router stabilized.
The mobile devices are difficult to diagnose, so 2) stick with the PC for now.

Standard questions:

did you update the ethernet & wifi drivers on the PC?
have you looked to ensure your new router has the latest firmware?
*if* you have a DSL connection to the ISP, do you have the line filters on EVERY device connected to the phone line EXCEPT the line to the modem? *MUST HAVE*
Got to get these right first.

THEN, find the MTU that's right for you AT HOME and set that into the new router:

get a command prompt
ping -l 1500 -f 8.8.8.8
as long as you see Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set., reduce the 1500 by 8 and iterate with the new number
:: record the MTU that works for your ISP at home
The router conf page is accessible using your browser and HTTP://your_router_address/
You need the router password
set the new MTU. Also set a new router password and save the settngs.

The wired connection should be solid at this point.

The wifi should also be better, as long as you avoid other stations with the same channel.
I assume you've see the post re inSSIDER for wifi setup.

Hi guys, so my internet has been dropping a lot more recently (I have had this issue for about 4 months now). The odd thing that I cant figure out, is that it only happens on my desktop. Every other computer and phone can connect and doesnt drop wifi like the desktop does. Also, this happens when im wired through an ethernet cord. I have reinstalled network drivers, bought a wireless usb card, tried troubleshooting everything I can that I know how to do. Any other things I could try?

Thanks

So a few days ago a problems started appearing.
I will play a game, and the game runs really smooth, at like 70-80 FPS on very high settings, but after a few mins it goes to like 20 FPS!!
and if I restart my computer, it will be the same, it will work smoothly for a few min, and after that it will start to stutter and play at like 20 FPS.
this happend to me in every game.
in war thunder, in wolfstien, in the witcher 2.
I start the computer, I play the game, it runs smoothly for a few mins, and then I am forced to lower the settings greatly because of the FPS drop.
I used to play war thunder on movie settings, and the FPS was on average 60+ in battles. now its 20-30 if I use these settings.

my system specs are:
Intel Core i5 4570 3.2Ghz (3.6Ghz Turbo) LGA1150 Tray

Intel Original LGA1155-1150 ???? ????? - ?? 95W
(???? ????? means Copper core-till 95W)

Gigabyte GA-B85M-HD3 for 1150

Silverstone Presicion PS08 USB3 + FSP 500W

Crucial 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz 1.5V CL11

Gigabyte Geforce GTX760 2GB RETAIL

Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 1TB SATA3

LG DVD-RW x22 Dual Layer Sata Black

Thanks in advance!

A:GTX 760 FPS drops

You did not mention what you have tried to do to resolve this issue, so here are a couple ideas:
Have you overclocked the graphics card? Possible bad settings if so. If you have, try lowering the overclock settings.
Have you tried un-installing the Graphics drivers and then re-installing the latest ones?
Have you opened up the computer and visually inspected all connections? Maybe re-seat the Graphics card? Check for dust while you are in there and clean it out, to include the fans.
What else do you have running while you game? There might be something else that is running in the background that could be slowing things down for you. Run a Malware and Virus check.

Hi all

I recently upgraded the CPU in my laptop (the specifics aren't important). It runs better than it ever has before! Well, at least it does for around 30 minutes. It's developed a lovely habit of randomly and unexpectedly shutting off.

Now, I know that the CPU is compatible with the motherboard; the fact that my laptop actually runs proves this.

I'm wondering what the issue could be?

My main suspicion is heat. The laptop is running at about 50-55 degrees on average; is this normal? I've cleaned out all of the airways and the fan; it's all running normally and the fan varies in speed depending on workload and temperature. This leads me to believe that the problem might lie somewhere else.

I've searched nearly every forum going but everyone just yells about overheating. Could someone please advise me to any theories they may have and help me fix the problem

A:Random Shut offs

Sounds pretty much as heat issues to me. I have also once upgraded a laptop cpu and even tho the clock speed increased by only 300MHz it got heat issues. I had to have a separate notebook cooler for that to run.
Anyways, the specs would help us to find what sort of temps your comp. should run on...and does it just randomly die when you idle or does it die after you have been using it for a while?

Hello

I sometimes get FPS drops when playing Diablo 3, its usually in the same places and its a lot of spells and stuff on the screen so it should be demanding more power but still, my rig should be able to handle it I think?

Usually when I play im on 130 FPS but when the FPS drop occur ( Which is not so often ) I can go down all the way to 12 FPS ...

I have the following :

AMD R9 290 TRI-X OC 4GB
i5 4570
8GB RAM

Is this just something that I have to live with that diablo 3 is more demanding then I thought or is there something wrong with my setup , settings?

I have latest drivers and so on..

A:FPS drops Diablo 3, is something wrong with my rig?

Diablo 3 isnt that demanding. It could be an issue with the R9 290/current drivers and Diablo 3. I would try the following solutions to see if they help.
Option 1) Turn on V-sync (this probably wont help but it is worth a try).
Option 2) Clean Install the drivers by doing the following: uninstall the current ones with Display Driver Uninstaller or AMD Clean Uninstall Utility (people dont always have the best luck with this tool so I would use the first one) and then download and install the latest 13.12 stable driver.
LAST RESORT: Option 3) Download and install the latest beta driver. This could fix issues with newer cards like the 290 and certain games. If you do resort to this option and it doesnt work, make sure to clean install the latest stable driver by proceeding with the steps mentioned in option 2.

I hope this helps.

About years ago I bought a laptop that I can use for college but also at home for gaming At first framerates were not what I expected from a laptop with my specs but I assumed it just had to do with hardware being less capable due to the fact that it s a laptop However I recently discovered that there was a problem with the onboard chipset where my laptop would automatically use the onboard chipset for all graphical processes instead of the more powerful GPU Having that solved with nVidia settings I now have a new problem During gaming sometimes my framerate drastically drops from about - to - fps This occurs randomly even while not doing anything in-game I have checked with the Windows Task Manager and it does not show a significant increase in processing while gaming drastically Framerate drops power only from about - to - which I believe should not lead Framerate drastically drops while gaming to such framerate drops I suspect this problem has something to do with thermals since CPU temperatures can easily reach - C - F and GPU temperatures easily reach - C - F measured with CoreTemp and SpeedFan If this is a thermal problem how can I fix it Normally I d blow out the dust but since it s a laptop I m not sure if that s easy possible If it s not a thermal problem what is is And how can I fix it Laptop specs Asus X QS series CPU Intel Core i QM GHz GPU nVidia GeForce GT M Memory GB DDR RAM OS Windows Home Premium bit Onboard chipset Intel HD Graphics nbsp

A:Framerate drastically drops while gaming

The CPU is definitely getting a bit toasty. You want it to be around 60-80 C. Open up the casing and use some compressed air to clean out the air vents.

If that doesnt work, tell me. Also, what GPU drivers are you running? Finally, why do you have DDR2 RAM with a modern CPU? That could be part of the problem.

A:Random 1 second disconnects

What were you doing prior to this started happening. You need to make sure you not infected by pest. First remove any Wired ethernet cord from the PC. Run a system virus check set to full scan. Let that run. If nothing turns up. Try setting your PC network adapter to static IP. This means you don't let the router setup the IP.

If that doesn't work then you have a bad network adapter. You could also try downloading newer drivers for your network adapter. Also any firmware updates for your router too.

Now am upgrading my PC soon any way but would like to find out if its something I can fix or its just how much I can get from games these days with this hardware

So, a few months ago I bought a Dell inspiron 5552 laptop and in the past month or two I have been dealing with problems which are becoming VERY frequent. At random times, especially when I'm gaming, my laptop switches off - even when my laptop is cool. I downloaded Piriform's Specci and here are the results I got for the following hardware (Celsius): CPU 51, Motherboard 52, Hard drive 38 - These are the results on balanced and Dell battery life extender enabled. I've seen videos of dusting a laptop's ventilation system however their temperatures didn't seem to make a significant difference so I didn't try it. Any ideas?

A:Random shut-downs

Most probable issue is still the cooling and secondly too much power drain via graphics adaptor.

Hi To get straight to the point I m having issues Extreme in FPS-drops games with fps in games I ve had this for some time now and I m not sure what started it After about a week of having this issue I decided to format my computer to see if that fixed the problem The problem persisted and It s getting increasingly annoying because it makes certain games almost impossible to play Games in which I have this issue until now League of Legends most important for me somewhat rare but I dip as low as fps Battlefield I m sure this is not hardware related because weeks ago I ran it - fps on high Dipping to - fps which is severely impairing in a game like this War Inc Battlezone the problem manifests itself most clearly in this game because it has an fps-display that shows when you get below I m having it like once Extreme FPS-drops in games every min Drops to about - Minecraft very rare but it does happen sometimes I go from v-synced fps to Above are all the games I ve installed and play currently so I don t know if I have it in others But the fact that I m having the problem in ALL currently installed games says enough for me to know there s a problem What have I tried to fix this problem I ve updated and installed all of the latest drivers for my hardware I Extreme FPS-drops in games also checked if any of those drivers any of my hardware were incompattible in some way I ve messed around with the settings in Catalyst Control Center as suggested on a forum Extreme FPS-drops in games about people having this problem nothing helped nothing changed I ve tried turning every other relevant software off to eliminate any imcompatibilities and other issues I ve tried turning video-settings to low or off in games mostly apparent in Battlefield While that upped my regular fps it did nothing to my fps during a drop After trying all the above things I went and checked which was the weakest part in my setup and I concluded it was my RAM memory being only DDR Fatal ty DDR Although it is the fastest gaming-quality DDR type it was still the weakest link My next step was to ask my friend with a beast-setup what his RAM-occupancy was during some of the above games All the games except War Inc because he doens t play that took up the same or even more percentage of his RAM memory Overall conclusion I don t know enough about RAM memory to say if that is the cause yes or no Also I m fairly confident that it is not a hardware-related issue because I have the same problems in games like Minecraft and War Inc both of which are absolutely not RAM-intensive Any help or suggestion is welcome and if anymore info is needed to fix the problem I d be more than happy to provide it Thanks in advance Marty nbsp

Hi there,

Here is my problem,
I game a lot, & if I disconnect from those games for 1 or 2 minutes I'll probably be dead and/or lost the game.
My connection drops randomly, this happens once every hour or so, a few minutes later I reconnect to the same internet. The internet hasnt shut down, I can still browse on my phone & on another computer., but those arent on when Im gaming.
I've had this problem for a while now and it also occurres on my other laptop when I gamed up there. I can solve this by going to controllpanel & troubleshoot problems with network adapter, but it is getting really annoying. Even when Im only browsing like now it just drops connection.
Can someone help me?

A:Connection drops randomly

Sounds like you're on a DSL connection - - are you?

I would log into the router and on the WAN side configuration, set the MTU to 1492.
This will stop tcp fragmentation and therefore avoid the necessity of reassembly, which can easily overflow buffers and break connections.

Might also reduce tcp ACK responses by applying this change.

Okay so to be precise, it is a Toshiba Satellite A305-S6857

The problem is that the computer will completely shut off at any given time. It will sometimes boot into windows but it will be a black screen with only the cursor until a blue screen pops up that I never have enough time to read through. It won't stay on trying to install a new OS or in the Setup Manager.
What I've tried:
Removing hardware one by one to see if it was the problem
Completely cleaned heatsink
Removed battery and ran only with power cord
Power drain
Replaced motherboard with a used but working one

Let me know if you need anymore information.

Ive only had the privledge (and by that, I mean, enough money) to build a single CPU (with my brother, it was his) in my life. I recall it has (still works apart from mobo, only recently replaced) a intel core 2 quad. I see people talking about bent pins and stuff on CPUs, but I dont remember pins being on the core 2 quad. that was the easiest part I recall, just literally placed the chip in the socket (the heatsink, that was a headache). I dont recall any pins. Are pins literally pins as in thin rods sticking out of the bottom, or what?

A:Sorta random CPU question (no problems, just a question)

Most modern CPU's (Intel at least) no longer have pins on the CPU, but instead the pins are on the socket.

The newer socket 1155 and 1366 (and 2011 for that matter) are just like the Socket 775 you are experienced with the Core 2 Quad you installed, just slightly larger sockets.

It is still very possible to bend pins though, but in this way, you damage the motherboard (with the CPU socket) vs. the CPU. You must be careful when inserting the CPU since dropping it on a corner into the socket CAN bend and damage pins.

So if you've built a system with Socket 775/Core 2 Quad, you should have no problem with Core i3/i5/i7 and newer Intel sockets if this is what you plan to do. Everything is basically the same... just slightly different socket and DDR3 memory vs. DDR2, which are also very similar and just snap in the DIMM slots similarly.

I hope that helps! Good luck!

A:Salt's random CPU blabber and some reading. Be prepared.

CPU's don't tick.
Probable culprits are:
PSU fan - see if any wires/cable are in close proximity to the PSU fan. No? Take out the PSU (or invert the chassis). What about now? If changing the orientation stops or decreases the sound then it's either a dry fan bearing or a loose wire or piece of insulation thats broken away and connecting with the fan blades.
Secondary culprit could be something (wiring/cabling) interfering with a chassis or graphics fans

Anyone think they can help me with this annoying issue? My internet at times will randomly drop
and reconnect after 30 seconds or so. Usually the error messages on my laptop or PC will say that a local cable has been unplugged, limit connectivity or a problem with the access point.

I'm running Windows XP on PC and Windows 7 on the laptop. I have a Dlink WBR-1310 router and it's secured with a WPA encryption. I honestly think it's a problem with my router, because I never had this issue before I first bought it.

A:Internet keeps dropping at random times

Reset the router to see if it will cure the problem.

Instructions on how to do so can be found here: http://www.dlink.com/us/en/home-sol...wbr-series-router-to-factory-default-settings

You might also want to try updating the firmware of the router.

You'll need to select the correct revision first...

A:FPS drops while play Counter-Strike / Warcraft

You do know there is no such thing as a legitimate copy of Windows XP SP3 Performance Edition. Only goodness knows what's included on that install, but the obvious issue is your video card. It's slightly better than a on-board video chip. That card is the kind used for extending a desktop over 2 monitors or watching a blu-ray movie on an HD monitor, it isn't the kind you play games on and expect to get great frame rates. Your frame rates drop because your video card is struggling to draw everything in your line of sight. Your memory is fine for XP. I used to have 2 GB of memory when I was using XP, just make sure you have less than five programs running in the system tray at any time. My anti-virus, sound and video driver appear in the system tray, so you may want something similar to that too.

Ok so I have a HD6950 unlocked with a 6970 bios, and I can play almost any game maxed out. But for some reason in Need for speed most wanted(one of my favorite games) The Frame rate goes from 85 to 1 in a second and back up to 85 again! It does that constantly! And it can be very annoying! Is there any way to fix this or will I just have to live with it?. P.S. my specs are:

i7 950 @ 3.8 ghz
6 GB of ram

A:Huge FPS drops in NFS MW

I don't see any apparent reason why your system wouldn't run that game maxed out.
Have you updated all of your drivers? Also check if your graphics card driver has any known compatibility issues with that game.
As a last resort you could try de-clocking your graphics card to see if that fixes the issue (if that's possible, I don't really know...).
I don't really have any other suggestions, maybe run a virus/malware scanner sometime, see if that delivers results.

Hi there I currently have a studio 1747 from Dell. I play some video games on it mostly from steam such has CS, CSS, the new CSGO TF2 etc. Lately ive been getting random FPS drops in game. I could be running fine at about 150fps for 5-20 mins then all of a sudden it drops to about 20. At first I thought it was caused by overheating but then I went out ad bought a cooling pad with three cooling fans to put underneath it and I'm still getting this problem. Im beginning to think that maybe this laptop just cant handle pc gaming? But my starting FPS is at about 120-125 before these drops. Any solutions would be great!

Hey. This is an awful issue for me I've been having.

I may open a browser and it will work fine for a while. Or I may be browsing and it takes 10 seconds just to highlight whatever I'm hovering my mouse over. I check CPU usage and it's at 100%...

Usually I will play a game of sc2 and it will be chugging along at 65-110 fps on lowest and then suddenly lag... freeze and jump. Then maybe 2 games later I play through a whole game at 90 fps.

I recently REFORMATED so it is NOT a virus issue or a ****ed up registry issue or similar.

I'm using AMD Athlon 64x2.

Windows Vista 32 bit. Service pack 2.

Please help me, this is killing me

I just built a new computer recently and it is running great with one big exception, I keep getting randomly disconnected from my wireless internet connection. I do not believe it has anything to do with signal strength because my laptop right next to my rig never has this issue of connectivity. Also seeing as it is a new comp it is not an issue of any malware ect. If i had to guess i would say the wireless card i got is the issue. It was a last minute purchase and cost about 20 dollars. My question is how do I uncover if the wireless card is the culprit and if it is what steps do i take to fix/replace it?

See if there is a newer driver. If so, uninstall the old one through Programs and Features and install the new one. Of course, make sure it is compatible with your version of Windows.

Hi,

Can anyone please help with this problem as it's driving me nuts. I am getting the DNS error when I try to go to certain websites ie. ebay.com. I've been in contact with my ISP but they don't seem to know how to fix the problem. My system consists of: WinXP Pro sp3, D-Link 2640R Router, wired connection. I'd be grateful any help. Thank you....

Verity25

I have managed to resolve this issue myself....

A:DNS error on random websites

Hmm, w/o more info, an inability to access common sites like "eBay" suggests your "Network Adapter" (not hardware, but a MS Networking driver) is corrupted. A number of things can cause this, but "AdWare" is the most common culprit. The problem has always been far too common with XP (and earlier). Much less of a problem since Vista/W7 made changes to those essential services far more unlikely.

If you can, I suggest you try connecting another PC to the same internet connection and see what you get. Or, if you're computer savvy enough, I recommend downloading a free copy of Ubuntu Linux and connecting to the Internet with the "Live CD" (a way to test the OS w/o installing it.) Both methods will rule out an issue with your ISP.

ok, I have installed some monitoring software for my CPU and graphics card and I can tell you that even with a game running, the graphics card doesn't even seem to be active.

A:Random FPS lag spikes

Just a quick note:

Run "DxDiag", "accept WHQL-signatures", go to the third tab up on the left - called "Monitor" or "Screen" or "Graphics" or something like that.

At this tab, you can see what GPU you have.
If you restored the PC to factory settings, but still experience lag, then this is at least not software-related.

- Have you re-installed the graphics drivers?

--------------------

The Acer Aspire X1301 I looked up on Google was a stationary PC, so I'm expecting that your PC is a stationary model.

You should check the CPU temperature in your BIOS, and if it doesn't void any kind of warranty, you should also check (only see, don't touch) the inside of your PC.
- Is it "very" dusty? Like a 1mm film of dust everywhere or equivalent?

Sounds like there could be an issue with your BIOS... either needs to be flashed to a newer version to fully support the X6 processor or the settings just need to be tweaked. Make sure your memory is running in accordance to factory spec and that your voltages for both CPU and RAM is within acceptable range.

I hope i have the right board. Anyway I have a sony viao laptop.
It plays random adverts all the time. It also happens when I click play on a youtube videos or the likes. It'll play over the video its very annoying.

I have scanned the laptop with fully updated AVG, NOD32, SPYBOT, MALWARE BYTES, SUPER ANTISPYWARE.
not all at once but installed them one at a time an updated them.
they all found absolutly nothing.

I've uninstalled most programs also to narrow it down but it seems to be none of them.

I've always had AVG up to date so I dont know how this happened.

Does anybody have any ideas? I'd hate to have to wipe the laptop cause im away from home for a few months and dont have discs and drivers etc.

Cheers

After I formatted my HDD, re-installed the same Windows 7 I had before I've been getting brief and random picture-freezes. They appear to be more often and last longer when playing a game or so forth, although they even pop up while using a browser or MSN. I have no idea what might be causing this, as the PC itself is fast as usual. If anyone can help me...I'd be eternally grateful.

Short and facty:
1) Brief picture freezes, more often when PC working hard
2) Just did a format
3) NEED THIS FIXED FAST =)

Hello there, I am looking to upgrade/replace my Ati radeon hd 5770, but I need to keep my upgrade's price to no more than 175$. Really the one I am looking at is the Ati radeon hd 5870. Although as you know it is unrealistic to expect to find one in my price range and I want the new gpu in time for October. Do you think there will be a price drop on the 5870 by then? I mean I know about how the new series of Ati and Nvidia gpus are coming this year but how much would you guess the price would drop on the 5870 or 5950?

Regards, Benjamin

A:Any idea on when price drops may happen for the 5870?

Short answer is they wont drop in price- at least not significantly or widespread.
Dropping the prices on 5870 and 5850 cards cannibalizes the potential sales of 6870 and 6850 cards. You will probably see spot specials from selected retail and etail stores but they will be of limited stock and for a limited time period (from a few days to a week duration) unless the manufacturer or vendor has excess stock to get rid of -such as MSI's undercutting of other board manufacturers recently.
For your $175 budget I would suggest you look at the Asus DCII 5850. A stock 5850 is around 12-17% slower than a 5870 - not a huge real world difference. The DCII also has very good overclocking potential, and should reach (or surpass) 5870 levels of performance without any difficulty. I would not expect 5850 prices to drop much below this price, and I doubt you will see sub-$200 prices for 5870's -a least not widespread, before both disappear from store shelves.

My advice, if you are looking for the best bang-per-buck is to keep checking back with the big etailers for these special deals, or to look at the secondhand market (if a 5870 is a must have) -make sure the seller has good sales feedback, and preferably that the card is still covered by warranty. Local pickup or buyers insurance (using PayPal or similar) would be in your best interest also. Steer clear of volt-modded cards- they tend to have had hard lives.

Hi,
I have just been through the process of cleaning malaware from my computer (with the help of your techs). It was a google redirect problem but I was also experiencing random disconnects from the internet and audio and I assumed they were all related. Everything is now fine except that I am still getting the occasional disconnect from the wireless. It's not happening as often as before. When I check my wireless connection it usually says that i'm connected. I usually disconnect and reconnect which works sometimes. Occasionally when I disconnect it says it cannot locate any wireless networks and I have to reboot. Sometimes hitting the Repair button on the computer icon in my tray works. Any suggestions?

Yesterday I started noticing that my computer randomly makes 2 quick noises in a row that sound like sandpaper being scratched together. The first is a longer noise, the second is the same type of noise but abbreviated.

It happens when I am using the computer at random times (maybe every 10 minutes) and also when I am not using the computer, just a few feet away perhaps.

Any ideas? ... This noise is annoying because I have the volume on quite a bit due to medical transcribing w/ sounds files.

A:Random strange noise from speakers/earphones

A click or buzz noise that happens every 10 or 15 minutes, could be coming from another electrical device on the same mains wiring, for instance, a fridge, or central heating thermostat.
Each time a fridge motor starts up, it puts a 'spike' of noise into the local mains wiring, which is amplified by items such as Hi-Fi or PC speakers. If that is the case, it is possible to buy for a few pounds (dollars), a small choke that will clip over the mains lead, near the plug, which will cut the interference down.
Also, there are mains extension cables with multiple outlets designed for HI-Fi of PC use, which have spike suppression built in. It is sometimes called 'mains conditioning'.
These are not the same thing as 5 extension 'gangs' !
The prices vary wildly, but here is one I found quickly. http://www.saverstore.com/product/2...-Mains-Extension-Lead-with-Power-Conditioning
Or try (if in UK) http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?tabid=1&criteria=usb&moduleno=219077&c=so&u=strat15

Also: From past experience with interference in a HIFi system, the problem turned out to be coming from the central heating boiler next door! In that case the fault has to be stopped at source. You might try fitting an RF filter to your speaker or headphone lead. I have a similar 'Choke' on my PC speakers. I bought a DAB radio this year, and a similar device is fitted to the mains adapter.
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=32799
These clip on ferrites are designed to go over the mains lead to prevent the interefence from running up the lead, but if you use headphones for transcribing work, or audio typing, it might be better to wind the headphone lead through this choke, several times over.

Hey shutdowns now random scanner suffers my fell and from My PC onto first post in need of advice So I knocked my tower over with a left elbow by accident falling off of my desk and onto my scanner My scanner is done for but the tower seemed fine - iTunes didn t skip a beat throughout My PC fell onto my scanner and now suffers from random shutdowns the split-second ordeal Upon its return to the desk the tower seemed fine Then about minutes later it shut down I waited and restarted it and it worked great for the rest of the evening I shut it down before going to bed Now this morning it ran CHKDSK on my Windows-installed drive C It deleted a few corrupt entries and then started normally I logged in and let it do its thing decided to just let it run and came back about minutes later and it was on the quot locked out quot screen I signed back in and everything was fine I opened up My Documents scrolled down and then boom - complete and utter shutdown I should point out that at some point during its construction I must have gotten a wire crossed because it will never ever stay turned off unless I turn the power supply off - if you just shut it down it will turn on after about seconds But this time it stays off And it actually takes about seconds to turn it back on Now I ve noticed that the shutdown only occurs when I try to run processes on it Leaving it idle will net no response but any attempt to open up a browser or program results in immediate shutdown I ve checked out everything with a mini mag light and I ve had to blow a lot of dust off it s really dirty I m lazy and haven t been cleaning it regularly There s also a fair amount of thermal paste on the chip and I m waiting to get some more thermal grease before cleaning it off So I think it could be one or more of three things the C disk is corrupt cracked loose my power supply is shorting or my chip is cracked I wouldn t think that thermal paste would be the complete answer but I imagine if it s heat-related that it has a hand in it Either way I m in need of help And if anyone knows why the never-stays-shut-down thing happens that d be swell too I should also add ASRock motherboard Intel chipset Western Digital blue caviar HDs can t remember the power supply offhand and currently running windows XP nbsp

A:My PC fell onto my scanner and now suffers from random shutdowns

If the CPU has sustained damage it wouldn't work at all.

I'm not really overly sure what the issue is, it sounds software related, but then I can't think of any process that would cause immediate shutdown of the PSU.

It could be heat related, but the computer would freeze from the CPU overheating under load and therefore thermally throttling down to reduce temperature. It wouldn't in my experience "order" the PSU to immediately cut all power, unless this is a safe guard through the motherboard I'm unaware of.

I would check the CPU cooler all the same. Does it still feel rigid on all 4 corners, or does the cooler frame now have play when you rock it side to side? Its possible the impact has dislodged one or more pins holding the cooler to the motherboard.

Hi I got a new system assembled in September this year Since the last two weeks there is a weird buzzing sound like that of a bee emanating from inside the system at random intervals It lasts for an intervals fan buzzing creates Computer at irritating random sound - seconds and then stops only to occur again Initially I ignored it Computer fan creates an irritating buzzing sound at random intervals But when it continued this way I opened up the CPU while the system was running Now there are two fans inside my CPU a big one mounted vertically at the back kind of like an exhaust fan and a smaller one screwed horizontally on a heat sink processor fan I suppose I discovered that the sound was emanating from the processor fan How did I know Well I waited for the buzzing sound to occur again and when it did I placed a finger on the center of the fan The fan stopped rotating and so did the buzzing sound The fan is screwed on to the heat sink Initially I thought that it might be due to friction fan rubbing against a rough surface So I unscrewed it and took a peek underneath But it seemed fine to me Then I cleaned the fan with a hair dryer It didn t have much of dust anyway as it s just months old I also used the hair dryer to clean the top of the heat sink then screwed the fan back on and started the system It was fine for a couple of minutes and then the buzzing sound materialized once again And this continues to occur at random intervals even now I have experienced noisy computers before and I do understand that it s normal for computers to be slightly noisy due to the cooling fans However this buzzing sound is something new to me Can anyone diagnose this problem and help me get rid of the buzzing sound It gets on my nerves especially at nights while I am surfing My system configuration is as below AMD Athlon II X Processor on MSI GMA-E motherboard with GB Corsair DDR RAM OS is Windows Ultimate Ed bit By the way I had enabled the quot AMD Cool n Quiet quot feature in my BIOS setup a long time ago I have tried disabling it But this did not stop the buzzing sound As this is a brand new system shouldn t the fan be running smoothly I do remember that the heat sink and fan were part of the AMD processor package kit nbsp

I've been having random internet drops for about 3 weeks now. Verizon tried everything from lowering my speed to sending a tech guy out, nothing helped. All of their line tests say nothing is wrong, which obviously isn't the case.

Can anyone save me from this hell? It would be appreciated greatly.
I've attached my HJT log so take a look.
Thanks.

I got a minor problem with my system. I highly doubt it is from the 9600GT card my friend give me. The symptom is: at random startup the screen will display artifacts, to be exact it actually looks like there are tiny glitters all over the screen randomly. and the display will shutoff intermittently.

always solved by a reboot. always. sometimes what i notice is, the fan is not as noisy as usual when startup, and the problem appear.

not a big deal, but getting quite irritating having to reboot to solve the problem. i've tried cleaning the card contact also of course clean the HSF and redo thermal gel.

anyone have any idea? and of course, drivers are 258.xx from nvidia web.

A:Need help with overheating temps (causing random shutdowns)

Those cpu temps are strange, (2 of the 4 pages are reading negative values) so I wouldn't know whether to trust them.

I'd be suspecting the cpu fan, assuming those temps are trustable. I'm sure someone with much more knowledge than me will be around soon to confirm it though.

Temp 1 could well be your northbridge or southbridge on your motherboard. Its not your GPU, or drives, as they're listed seperately, as are your two CPU cores.

Are you certain all your fans are running OK?

A:Random PC shutdown

Well generally pc shutdowns are due to the power supply being faulty or general overheating.
As you have replaced the power supply there is a small chance that this is the cause. Again you have checked the connections to the motherboard and they are fine too.

The only thing I can suggest without further thought is to check the cpu temperature. This can be accessed in some bios configuration screens. Generally you can enter this screen using the f1, f2 or delete key.

The temperature will be under the power tab and it will probably show the motherboard temp as well as the cpu's. between < 35 is great 35-45 is ok anything over 45 is starting to run hot etc. *Note AMD chips do run a little hotter so take this into account*

What cpu fan do you have? is it connected with thermal paste?

The motherboard could have a faulty connection point I once experienced this except the computer was in permanent sleep mode rather than sporadic shut downs.

My card is an ATI Radeon Now the damage? sign card - FPS drops of background I recently purchased Starcraft and the game has a well-known bug the menu screens don t have an FPS cap and thus your video card will render the bejeezus out of them to the point of getting fried if not stopped Being the foolhardy Starcraft addict I am I continued to play despite my computer s forced shutdowns I had figured that the shutdowns would always happen before the card reached dangerous temperatures so no damage to the card would occur Yes that is terrible logic but I really did want to play that game I ve seen a decrease in performance since I fixed the menu problem as in there are notable FPS drops while playing every - seconds I lowered my graphics settings yet this has been happening consistently I don t know if this is a cue that my card has been damaged and this could very well be terrible B net lag for all I know but the circumstances I just described make me a bit worried Are there any diagnostics I can run other tests to see if FPS drops - sign of card damage? my card has been physically damaged Thank you in advance for your help nbsp FPS drops - sign of card damage?

A:FPS drops - sign of card damage?

While I haven't encountered this so called bug, I would recommend reinstalling the drivers or trying a different set with your card. When video cards, and most other PC hardware, get hot you may notice performance drops. This is typically remedied with adjusting the fan speed or reapplying a thermal compound to the GPU core. While it is possible that the card could be damaged, it's unlikely unless it has been running extremely hot. Video memory (known as VRAM) is fairly sensitive to heat and isn't cooled like the core is.

A:Wired internet connection periodically drops out - using DrayTek router

Look for interference sources. Be sure none of the equipment is within 10 inches of any surface such as a wall, and is 12 inches or more from any corner... or heat source... or electrical fan or special lighting.

Some TV or video screens can also have an influence if within 20 inches.

Didn't see your screen grab.

Can we assume you have attempted to uninstall, then install to a different setting?

Hi everyone I m about at my wits and trouble on powering shutoffs Random end with this issue for a computer of mine and I can t figure out for the life of me what the issue Random shutoffs and trouble powering on is Here are the symptoms - If on the computer will randomly turn off will run anywhere from a few minutes to several hours at a time with no issues - If off the computer has trouble turning on eg hitting the power button often causes the fans to spin for a split second and sometimes the boot-sequence LED s begin their changes but it shuts off within - seconds no post no beep code errors though sometimes it will power on successfully - There are no warning messages from the mobo only the OS prompt saying quot Windows did not shut down properly quot if it managed to get to a booting booted Windows state so it seems like the computer doesn t realize it was screwing up - The machine will sometimes randomly power ON if it s currently off Here s what I ve done - I did manage to run a memTest which reported no errors - Tried a stripped down boot video card -stick of RAM swapped each of my and Mobo power with current PSU and a different one both produced this issue - Tried directly plugging the PSU into the wall instead of the power bar - Tried switching the power cord connecting the PSU to AC power - Tried removing the CMOS battery and replacing I have absolutely no idea what s causing this but it s driving me nuts Here are the system specs Intel Core Quad Q P Neo Mobo W Ultra Power Supply Nautilus Water Cooling Can t recall the Video Card specs but it s nothing spectacular more of a number crunching machine than a gaming one It should be mentioned that these issues mainly cropped up when I moved to a new PSU Case which is a Cooler Master HAF but I tested with the old PSU as mentioned above admittedly it only ran W The thing about the new case is that it has several more fans than the old one and while the transition took place I may have spilled a small amount of the coolant water mixture onto the video card a small amount of which dripped down onto the mobo However given that the machine has been capable of running for up to hours at a time since I don t know if this is really the cause of the problem If anyone has some ideas for what to try next or what could be the problem I d very much appreciate it nbsp

If you can, go back to the way it was setup before you started overclocking and underclocking...
this problem can be one weak component, or using memory modules that are not matched or not the best for your machine...
I would make a log and keep track of what is going on when it fails... because it is difficult to track down... can be anything... hard drive, memory, CPU cooling, poor quality cables or connectors, too much or too little thermal paste...
The age of your computer is a clue that you need to start upgrading components anyway

So recently I purchased a Sapphire Vapor-X and it's been working great so far, but today when playing both Team Fortress 2 and GTA IV I suffered severe lag. On Team Fortress 2 I was just running around with hardly anybody on the screen when my FPS kept jumping from 60-10FPS and this lasted for around 30 seconds, I had the exact same issue with GTA IV when walking through a building. I haven't overclocked and I'm using the 10.4 drivers

System specs:

AMD Athlon 630 x4 @ 2.8GHz
Geil 2GB DDR2 RAM
Biostar GF8100 Motherboard
Seagate 250GB HDD

i updated Acrobat reader, Java, and upgraded to ie9 platform. im still having a lil trouble with it, although it does seem to have improved a bit. i checked for updated drivers and i couldnt find anything.

A:Acer laptop drops wireless signal

I have had the same problem with a Acer Aspire 5920g, we narrowed it down to being a incompatible router. How long exactly can you stay connected for? Does it drop off after 5 minutes and then do you have to reconnect it or it will eventually reconnect itself?
The 5920g we had i personally believe went wrong because of the wireless n capable adapter it had which when we bought it was one of the first out!
One thing that i would recommend to try though, if you have (or can get hold of) a usb network adapter see if you have the same problem connecting your laptop through that. Then we may be able to narrow down if its hardware or software.

when i try to connect to the internet at home, it connects and before i could go into the internet browser, it drops again. this continues to happen for many times until i couldnt do anything with it.
what's the irony is that i have other laptops (vista OS) at home running with no problems , and when i am in school, my Lenovo laptop connects perfectly. no signs of dropping of connection at all.

A:Windows 7 connection drops frequently for no reason

get this free program called inSSIDer and run it on the laptop. Walk around your place and see where the drop it starts and ends. Then you need to buy a Repeater and place that in the dead drop zone. The repeater is 100% wireless no need for hard-wire cable from the router to it.

In the meantime make sure your router is reset and also have the latest firmware for it.

A:Random shutdown then power back on

What power supply do you have?

It's normal for motherboards to reboot after changing RAM settings, mine does.

The reason your machine may turn back on, is that it may be set to reboot after a power failure. If your power supply is shutting down because it's being overloaded, the motherboard sees that as power failure.

For the past month my internet seems to be randomly dropping out. After Reseting my modem, router, and adapter it would sometimes come back up.

I reset my router to Factory settings and re configured the whole thing.
I called my ISP and had them monitor my connection for drops.

They did not detect any drop so it has to be on my end. I usually have a Voip running. Either Ventrillo or Teamspeak. These are where i most regularly notice the disconnects.

I started uninstalling programs that i did not use anymore. I downloaded and reinstalled new drivers and had some success. Today however i started experiencing the disconnects again.

Its a realtek Ethernet adapter on a gigabyte board. GA-EP45T-UD3LR

I have ordered a new router to see if thats the issue. if not does anyone have any suggestions that i should try

When I set my screen saver to display photos from "My Pics" I get the option for it to select which photos to display at random. So I have selected this option and sure enough away it goes and does just that, almost. I notice that some photos turn up more often than others and some I have never seen at all. I have had this on my machine in different guises for quite a long time and I am certain that some photos just never get shown. So, my question is. How in Hades does this random thingy work. Thanks in advance, James.

A:Random Photo Selection

Well it randomly picks up the picture it want to show for the time specified, now depending upon time and power settings (as if the PC is on idle for too long it may go into standby or turn off monitor screen etc.), if you allow to run it for longer periods of time you may notice some of those pictures show up.

I have a few laptops, a desktop and a xbox 360, sometimes the same 2 laptops and my 360 disconnect from the internet all at the same time but the desktop and other laptop don't and are fine, they all connect through wireless.

I have since bought a Wireless N USB adapter for my laptop and it will now not disconnect when the 360 and other laptop disconnect, so I'm not sure if there is some kind of hardware conflict or the wireless adapters are outdated and haven't had the latest firmware etc.

My router has the latest firmware and is some D-Link router, i can get the exact model number if you need but I'm just wondering why I get these random disconnections.

To manually resolve the problem I just restart the router and modem and everything works fine apart from lag on the xbox 360 in-game, however this has become rather an hassle.

Thanks.

A:Random Wireless disconnections

Hi

random disconnections can be caused by heavy router traffic from nearby routers, such as neighbors etc, try going into the config and changing the channel it works on, you may have to try several times before finding a stable link.

Also live on the xbox can flood the router, causing slowdowns and lockups, as can downloading via things like utorrent and other torrent programs,

Let me start by saying I know very little of computers but what I do know I know very well It s pretty weird but unfortunately it almost always has to do with video games Anyway here s my problem The video I play skips randomly for a second or two The video will freeze but I can still hear sound and it ll suddenly skip to where it should be playing like normal until it skips again You can see why this is annoying What s more aggrivating is this ONLY happens when I m streaming videos like South Park Studios Family Guy X IllWillPress and YouTube But when I download a video from YouTube or somewhere else and play it back on my PC it plays fine Not a problem at all I could run ten of them and not have a problem If you have suggestions please be very clear Like I said I don t know these things too well so you have to be very simple with me And if you have something you think I d need I really need a link or a very specific name I really appreciate the help I just thought I d ask This is starting to bug me I have -no- idea if this matters but here s my info Windows edition Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack System Alienware Windows Experience Skipping Random Video AMD Phenom Quad-Core Processor GHz Sorry if this Random Video Skipping is vauge nbsp

A:Random Video Skipping

Let me start by saying that you need to run Windows Update and install about 5 years of critical and hardware updates... Then we can work on your problem easier

A:Random Reboots

So, I can't find my multimeter, but looking at my PSU it shows that I have 4 +12V rails and what they're designated to. The plugs for my PSU have the same indicators that are on the lable, such as pci-e 1 and pci-e 2. So I'm curious if those correlate to the rails or if that is just for ease of installation. Also, my graphics card has a 36 amperage requirement, and my 12V rails are rated at 18A, but since it's getting 2 it's ok? but one is possibly shared so it's bad? but it's worked for a year? please help

I m running a lenovo T thinkpad and it s relatively new - that is I bought it last winter - but recently I ve been having what seems to be a hardware problem Or at least that s what the guys over in the Virus and Malware removal section are telling me Because from time to time my laptop has decided it s just going to go shut T500 Random Thinkpad: downs? Lenovo ahead and shut itself down Completely No lights no Lenovo T500 Thinkpad: Random shut downs? nothing - pressing the power button doesn t do anything I almost always have it plugged into a socket and that light won t show either - I ve found that taking the battery out of the laptop and Lenovo T500 Thinkpad: Random shut downs? letting it sit for a little before putting the battery back in usually gets the laptop to work again It s only happened recently but it s happened twice in the past week - which is a little more than bothersome since Lenovo T500 Thinkpad: Random shut downs? the antivirus I have runs a full scan when it happens I ve noticed that my laptop gets a little hot - not too hot that I can t touch it - but as far as I know I ve never had a problem with overheating or anything similar which leaves me in the dark about this entire thing I m really hoping that this doesn t turn out to be a hardware problem I should still be on warranty but I m a little - okay that s a lie I m pretty damn - scared to try and open up my laptop and fiddle with anything Hope this is enough information for someone out there to give me some sort ve idea of what s going on - and maybe how I could go about fixing this Thanks so much in advance guys nbsp

A:Lenovo T500 Thinkpad: Random shut downs?

Hi

Under warranty = dont mess with it

send it back under the warranty and report the issue.
