Preferred Solution: What things I should keep in mind when buying used things?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: What things I should keep in mind when buying used things?

Suppose the answer changes based on who you are buying from. A lot of these things either work or they don't...

HDD - you could use something like Crystal Disk Info and hope everything shows up green. Or run a Long DST with Seatools (will take 5+ hours on large disks)
GPU - Visually inspect that it is clean, if possible have them run some benchmarks on it and monitor the temperature to make sure its reasonable and there is not artifacting or crashing happening.
Processor - If its less than 7 years old and hasn't been heavily overclocked it has an extremely high chance of being fine.
Motherboard - This is probably fine too if it is shown to work at all, check the caps to see none are bulging or leaking.
RAM - Nothing quick you can do here, ask them if it has passed multiple passes of memtest, you could have them show you, but it will take at least overnight before you get a real answer.
DVD Drive - if it burns disks and reads its fine. If it dies on you, not much you can do, things are like $16 new anyway, don't put a lot of thought into this.
PSU - just find out what one it is and google if it is any good. This really depends on how demanding your system is.

Basically you just have to have a little faith in who you are buying from and ask them if something doesn't work right away if you can return it.

A:What things i should keep in mind when buying 2nd hand things???

1. Make sure they work and are compatible with the OS. You can check Windows Compatibility Center. (Win8)
2. Check to see if current drivers are available for the GPU.
3. See if updates are available for the Motherboard BIOS and chipset (INF files).
4. Make sure the memory modules are compatible with the Motherboard. (Speed, type, voltage, etc.)
5. Replace the Motherboard battery.
6. Verify that the PSU will support your hardware.

Good luck!

Heya,
Im thinking about buying a new computer tower/case/chasis whichever you prefer (or is preferred). OK, so should I be aware of anything like whether my power supply from my old case will fit, or if everything else will fit (im considering getting a bigger tower so im sure it will... umm just anything in general about this kinda thing. To clarify, all Im doing is moving all my old stuff from my tower now into a new one and am curious if I should be aware of anything. Sorry for the repetition Thanks for any help!

A:Buying a new tower.. any things i should be aware of?

You could transfer everything into a new case without hesitation.
It would be advisable however, to buy a larger (min. 400 Watt) powersupply like Enermax, in case you want to upgrade anything else in the near future

Alternatively, look at the Antec Sonata case (available from www.overclock.co.uk) for about 90.- which includes a quiet powersupply and rubber suspension for your HD's making it an extremely quiet case.

When transferring your old gear, watch out for static and be extra careful when mounting the MoBo.

I recently had a pretty badly infected computer that was sorted out over at the PCPitstop Forums see thread here http forums pcpitstop com index php show amp st Now that I am presumably clean I have some other issues During the repair to my system I was told to update my Java as well as uninstall old versions I got a few notices that I couldn t because of admin things but they uninstalled anyway it looked like but then when I tried to install the latest jre- u -windows-i exe it says quot The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation quot Thing is I am the only user and have full administrator access Doing some Can't or MSConfig (Admin things Install things in problems) change searching I found the trying the MSInstaller clean up utility could help but that give the Can't Install things or change things in MSConfig (Admin problems) same message when I try Can't Install things or change things in MSConfig (Admin problems) it Then I saw I could check msconfig to make sure it was running MSConfig shows it as Stopped but the box is checked next to it Trying to check and uncheck then apply it says quot An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service You may need to log on using an administrator account to make the specified changes quot I also tried to update iTunes today and it failed to install as well Some information Dell Inspiron E Windows XP Media Center Edition SP Running Trend Micro PC-Cillin SAS Ad-AwareI don t know if the cleaning messed up something or if I am still infected

A:Can't Install things or change things in MSConfig (Admin problems)

MSConfig shows it as Stopped, but the box is checked next to it. Trying to check and uncheck, then apply, it says "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an administrator account to make the specified changes."Do you have an HP printer? The msconfig isssue can be caused by HP printers. If you do have an HP printer:Make your change in msconfig. When you get the error message, click OK.Another box may open, do the same thing, click OK.Everything will close out, you will be asked if you want to restart the computer.More information can be found here: http://www.pchell.com/support/msconfig_acc...ied_error.shtmlThere is a way to get rid of it, but it involves editing the registry.IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE WITH EDITING THE REGISTRY, DON'T DO IT.You'll have to live with the message each time you use msconfig.

Hi. . .You mentioned a BSOD with bugcheck 0x76, but I don't see any mini kernel memory dump files in the attached zip. Did you run an app similar to CCleaner that may have deleted the dumps?Systeminfo output shows Windows 7 installed (or system 1st boot) in October 2010:Original Install Date: 10/20/2010, 12:53:02 PMIt also shows 403 Windows Updates installed.I went through the Event Viewer logs and found 13 BSODs listed. The first one I saw - bugcheck 0xc4 - Driver Verifier/ VERIFIER_ENABLED -

If Driver Verifier named a Microsoft Windows OS driver, "unknown hardware failure" is the likely cause. What exactly happened when you ran the BIOS update that failed?  Was there any additional info besides "BIOS update failed" (or similar)?  Is this the BIOS update you attempted? I would recommend that you start backing up your files in preparation for a Windows reinstall. A fresh install could end up breathing new life in your system &/or it may help figure out if hardware failure is in fact the cause of your BSODs.If a fresh Windows install BSODs before you've had a chance to install anything else, it is extremely likely that hardware failure is at fault.Regards. . .jcgriff2

I installed W8CP on an old notebook and gave it to my 13 year old daughter..
She loves it!

One thing: we noticed www.wizard101.com works fine in the normal
IE on the desktop, but does NOT work with the metro IE.. Not sure why..

Is there any way to get wizard101 working and pinnable?

EDIT: also, how do you see a history of links in metro IE?
In regular IE you click and hold the backbutton.. but
holding the backbutton in metro IE seems to do nothing..

The title pretty much says it all, just today my laptop has been acting really weird and I noticed someone tried to install a keylogger on my laptop but I can't delete the setup for it or even move it to a different folder. A box pops up telling me "windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I even tried enabling my built in administrator account to delete it from that still wouldn't budge though. My anti virus doesn't seem too bothered by it but I don't want it there! lol please help -_- I am running Windows 7 home premium, pretty much brand new dell xps 15z.

First I leave my pc on over night Starting a few weeks ago this started I would wake up everyday and my pc has restarted by itself I was up late one night and noticed it was windows update causing this why is it doing it every single night and how to I get this to stop I feel like I've had nothing but problems with it Second thing is about days ago I had a pop up from my ISP comcast that said I could download norton anti virus since my mcafee was expired I did this and had no problems with it so far Now since yesterday I can't go on certain websites Nike com is one of them it just shows a black 2 need please... I with help things page and thats on internet explorer I also cannot even get firefox to open at all and the same thing with AIM Another problem I've noticed is the windows side bar where you can add the widgets like weather etc doesn't work the weather widget shows a white box instead and above my gmail widget it has a little loading icon and says secure Is there anyway I can fix any of this Could norton have done something to the firewall or something I wouldn't know about I'm running windows vistaThank youSorry about the big paragraph but for 2 things I need help with please... some reason when I post the message it all joins together instead of having seperate paragraphs After editing as well

A:2 things I need help with please...

Hello,

Go to Control Panel > Security > Windows Updates > In the top left corner there should be "Change Settings" Click that. Then set the "important updates" drop list to "Check for updates, but let me choose whether to download and install them"

This should fix the restarting problems you are having. Just make sure you install updates when you can though, Updates make your computer more secure, and have better performance.

And about your Antivirus, You should download Microsoft Security Essentials. It's a free antivirus service, simple interface, but powerful protection. I use it myself with Windows Firewall. I recommend it to everyone.

LINK: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
Then.. About your web browser problems. It kinda sounds like a virus, or a plugin got disabled. I would do a System Restore to the time where you knew everything was working right and then install MSE. Scan for viruses, and then if nothing comes up, I think you may be missing a plug-in to view the website, such as Adobe Flash, or Adobe shockwave. I'm really certain what Nike.com uses, but I think it's adobe flash.

Ok I see all these help topics around the net on various sites about answering are things There to go few over a certain things about Windows such as getting to the Control Panel and things One of the instructions are to There are a few things to go over go to my computer and right click or right click on the desktop icon of my computer If you have one and do it from there That s all well and good but that doesn t do the person reading it any good when they have to locate the MY computer option that no one has bothered to explain how to locate The point I m making is if people are going to post how to instructions stop missing steps that are needed in order to be able to finish following the instructions If I want to access the control panel to shut off the UAC USER ACCOUNT CONTROL I shouldn t have to open the search and type Control panel to locate it user accounts This is something that should be accessible from the settings start menu in this mess now people will no doubt start posting how to access it multiple ways but there is no point considering I already accessed it and also explained how I accessed it Instead what people should be doing with their efforts is either explaining how to attach the control panel to this metro start menu or at least trying to figure out how to access things a lot easier Because even though the metro UI takes a bit to getting used to For those not used to it I don t think i have to explain how irritating it is to have to go through so much trouble to find something that should already just be there Hell just about every other thing is Another annoying aspect I want to complain about is how even after shutting off the UAC Just like in Windows xp Vista and and Me being the administrator why is it everything i run through Windows won t run unless I go to the icon I want to launch in the Start menu right click it and then select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR option and if I don t it doesn t let me run half the crap I want to run If the UAC is shut off and I am the administrator then there is absolutely no reason for this to still require me to run something as administrator

A:There are a few things to go over

...Another annoying aspect I want to complain about is how even after shutting off the UAC (Just like in Windows xp, Vista, and 7) and Me being the administrator, why is it everything i run through Windows 8 won't run unless I go to the icon I want to launch in the Start menu, right click it, and then select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR option, and if I don't, it doesn't let me run half the crap I want to run.If the UAC is shut off, and I am the administrator, then there is absolutely no reason for this to still require me to run something as administrator....It's done to improve security and to prevent you from having bigger problems. Suppose every app you run is run with administrator privileges by default. This would be fine with most 'safe' apps but if an app with malicious intent makes it's way onto your computer totally undetected by any anti-virus/anti-malware software and you run it with administrator privileges(since it's default), it can do whatever the hell it wants to do with your computer, anything really - from installing backdoors, keyloggers to deleting your personal files. In short - one single rogue app could screw up your entire system and personal files.By preventing this and by not running apps with administrator privileges by default, apps are run in a restricted environment and thus any major damage to you(and your system) would be prevented even if a certain app decides to go rogue. And this isn't just for Windows, Linux one of the most secure(also widely used) operating systems is stricter on this matter. And that's a good thing. Ok I see all these help topics around the net on various sites about answering certain things about Windows 8 such as getting to the Control Panel and things:One of the instructions are to go to my computer and right click, or right click on the desktop icon of my computer (If you have one) and do it from there. That's all well and good but that doesn't do the person reading it any good when they have to locate the MY computer option that no one has bothered to explain how to locate. The point I'm making is if people are going to post how to instructions, stop missing steps that are needed in order to be able to finish following the instructions. If I want to access the control panel to shut off the UAC (USER ACCOUNT CONTROL), I shouldn't have to open the search and type Control panel to locate it user accounts. This is something that should be accessible from the settings/start menu in this mess. now people will no doubt start posting how to access it multiple ways, but there is no point, considering I already accessed it and also explained how I accessed it.Instead what people should be doing with their efforts is either explaining how to attach the control panel to this metro start menu, or at least trying to figure out how to access things a lot easier. Because even though the metro UI takes a bit to getting used to (For those not used to it) I don't think i have to explain how irritating it is to have to go through so much trouble to find something that should already just be there..Hell just about every other thing is.You don't pay those people to help you - and hence they have no moral or legal obligation to explain everything to you just the way you want. People provide all this help to you for free.Still, if you want more help - if you ask in forums like this one or such other places then people will most likely help you and explain things to you in a way you understand. People are that good, be grateful for that.

A:Need Help with few things

the only thing that comes to mind on that sound since you are using a laptop is the bleep that the battery alarm would make when the battery is getting low that would come form the motherboard mounted speaker not the actual speakers for normal sound stuff.

the memory card reader not sure on that one I would try to uninstall it completely from device manager and there is probably something in ad remove programs for that as well reboot and let windows redetect it download the driver/software if need be to reinstall it.

get trojanhunter from trojanhunter.com

its amazing and has helped me a lot

download it and install it

then continue evaluation and then run the scan and it will find stuff and when its xddone it will ask u to clean what it has found and have the boxes checked next to what it finds then clean it....

also i recommend u getting ad-aware

its amazing

get ad-aware here: ftp://ftp.download.com/pub/win95/utilities/aaw6181.exe
when u get it

install it

and then run it

then first go to the world icon and check for updates

if there are updates click yes and then click finish after its done and then

go to the purple icon and click it and set the setting as follows:

Now do the following:
- Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine:
check: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

- Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Cleaning Engine:
Check: "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
Press "Scan Now"
- Check option "Use Custom scanning options"
- Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan"
- Press "Select drives\folders to scan"
- Select the active partition which is usually C:

Now press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives...
It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys.
Right-click in that pane and choose "select all"
Now press "Next" again.
It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.

Finally, close Ad-Aware, and reboot.

Mini Dump files are needed if you get a BSOD (screen turns blue, it is used to help Diagnose the cause). If you did not have a BSOD delete them. You would know if you had one
When you install a new program set up log files are created in case there is an installation problem. If you did not experience such problems they are safe to delete
memory dump
Answers.com - What is memory dump error
Error files can be deleted, if no problems are encountered on the computer. They record errors. Take a look at them. Go to search type event viewer and you will see errors etc. Go to administrative tab.
Dump files are really useful when you need to troubleshoot BSOD, application crashes, freezing, and any problem a Windows box maybe exhibiting.
In the absence of these problems they are safe to delete.

If you are not having problems it is safe to clean up the error report files.
You can turn off error reporting, but not suggested as you may have problems in the future.

debug dump files in Vista

Bottom line feel free to delete the files if you are not experiencing problems.

Hi Everyone,

I had this problem before but i fixed it way back when and now its happening again but this time i have no clue what to do...

When i open certain programs, or when i'm installing programs the box the normally says ok, or cancel is blank...The box is there and you can click it but the words aren't there

Its also happening with some other programs when the box is there and i can still click it, but i cant' see the OK or Cancel

Its even affecting msn, where i can't see certain peoples' font

I'm not sure what to do so i decided to ask for help, since i got no clue where to start!

Thanks,
Brown Panther

Hi! I'm sorry to bother you guys but I was wondering whether any of you could help me? My computer broke and now all my settings and programs have been reset. It has the newest version of Internet Explorer on it but there are some things I don't like about it which I would like to change. I was wondering whether any of you knew how to solve any of my problems?

I have provided a picture to help make my problem clearer:

Problem number 1: I don't like that some of the address is grayed out. Is there a way to make it black like the rest of the address?

Problem number 2: Is there a way to get rid of this "Live Search" toolbar?

Problem number 3: Can I move the highlighted toolbar to the top, where the arrow is pointing?

A:Three Things

Problem 2: Do you want to remove it or just change it to another search engine? To change to another search engine just click the arrow and go from there... To remove it, you can install a add-on called IE7Pro. It will give you the option to take it off. It will also give you other nice stuff...

Problem 3: This one can be solved the same way with IE7Pro. (Although it's called IE7Pro it works with IE8.)

If you don't want to install anything there is at least one other way to fix those two problems.

My roommate is damned lucky i don't charge him for the stuff i have to fix on his gateway He even has the nerve to give me attitude when i am trying to help him He got a bunch of adware and i removed all that i recognized Anyway here are the problems he is facing right now He has windows ME if that makes any things Two difference He is still getting pop-ups He said that he did a scan with up-to-date definitions with norton corporate and scanned for adware and spyware with ad-aware and spybot S amp D He cannot login to his yahoo account Two things or any other account for that matter He types in his password and account into the forms but he has been getting invalid password responses He logs in on my comp and he is able to log in He just deleted his temporary internet files on his own too if that makes any difference Any help would be appreciated apparently only by me and not my roommate

A:Two things

Hmmm...

1. I don't know if I can help the first issue. Perhaps it's a Windows Messenger problem - make sure that is off at startup. Also, try CWShredder to check for spyware. Finally, look at installing Process Explorer and Codestuff Starter (found at www.snapfiles.com). Both can be invaluable for spyware/virus issues.

2. As for the logon issue, check the IE security settings. I've seen times that when it's set to High, it won't log on to Yahoo or other message boards. Beyond that, I have no idea.

my computer was recently infected with a virtumonde trojan. i seemed to have gotten rid of the virtumonde even though it was a huge pain. i know a little bit about computers, but im no expert by any means. i deleted the infection after a long hard fought battle against it. however, when my computer was rebooted, the whole bar at the bottom has disappeared. i think you call it the task bar, im not positive. its the bar that shows your windows that are open, the system tray, and the start menu button. i can still open up all the programs with icons on the desktop, but i also have no sound. i have no idea how to get it back and usually i would check the sound card driver, but i cant get to the control panel. if anyone can assist my situation in anyway i would be extremely greatful.

So, this is the second time this has happened.
My sidebar just completely shut down.
Won't open at all.
And when my dad fixes it, it stays fixed for like,
a week, maybe. Then, messes up again.
And when my sidebar isn't working, my task bar freezes a lot.

Help, anyone?

A:Need help with a few things..

Hi Tiffani click the link in my sig and do everyhing it says there. Then click the windows start orb and type %localappdata%\microsoft\Windows Sidebar and hit enter. This will open a windows with a file called Settings.ini rename that file to Settings.ini.old

Reboot your pc and start vista sidebar

My AS software keeps finding Altnet, which evidently came from Kazaa which I used about a year ago and haven't been since. I've found it in the registry but it says "error deleting value" when I delete it.

Also, I unistalled my F-Secure AV software because I didn't not like it. Now when I run HJT I'm getting this F-Secure Backweb plugin thing that will also not go away no matter how many times I try to fix it.

Help Please

I use vista ultimate and it has wallpapers.
At first they look like photos, really natural like.
When you look at them after a while you realise they're not real photos
and there's lots of faces hidden in the pictures.
Some are obvious.
Or should I see a doctor?

A:my HJT log - need to get rid of several things

Please do the following:

Download & immediately run - L2MFix.exe
Click "Install" to extract the contents to a newly created folder.

Close all other opened programs before running this tool

From within the newly created folder, locate & run L2mfix.bat
Select option #1 - Run Find Log - by typing 1
This will scan your computer and it may appear as if nothing is happening for a period of few minutes. When it has finished, you will be presented with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

If you receive an error - \system32\Autoexec.nt is not suitable for running MS-Dos applications, you will need to visit this website to download additional files.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

A:help with things

Thanks!

You have a LOT of baddies there.

Do the following:

In Hijack This, check ALL of the following items. Doublecheck so as to be sure not to miss a single one.
Next, shut down all browser Windows, and have HT fix all checked.

You NEED to restart your computer when you're done.

After going through the tutorials on this website/forums I decided I wanted to refresh my install of WDP. The reason was I unpinned a lot of the apps, or even uninstalled them.

1) The problem is that whenever I tried to refresh WDP it always failed. I tried refreshing it by mounting the iso to the native Windows program, USB HDD (way I installed it.

2) I uninstalled apps also, so can I get them back by refreshing or would a system restore or something else be needed to be done.

3) One More thing, some of the apps that were already installed when installing WDP did not run for me..I wanted to try things like flashcards and such but it just would not run from the Metro UI

Not sure if this is HARDWARE but seem like just about everything my problems involve is I think I ve spent more time here in HARDWARE than in my own living room I got up this morning thinking quot maybe there are little things with the various computer problems I ve had in the past two months I m not noticing or thinking things? Little are important quot As I learn more about it I see this more Examples I Little things? don t have a lot of computer repair experience and even fewer quot successes quot at this point Few years ago the A drive went on my ProTech first computer I Little things? had I was devistated thinking I needed a new tower till I learned they are replaceable I mean who knows that till they find out I got another one My daughter s boyfriend who claimed to have worked on computers not recently since Windows so he knows Little things? the parts but not settings etc took mine apart put in the new A drive When he got it back together the monitor wouldn t go on he reached inside PC pushing on connections and such and it worked Shortly after this I didn t connect it at the time and it might not be relevant the PC started to quot go off quot The whole thing It would flash and go off and restart when dialing up Not everytime sometimes days would go by and it would work fine Sometimes it would take hours of trying to get it to quot connect quot Once online it was okay We used it like this for months and it finally wouldn t go on at all The lights and fan came on but the hd wouldn t quot start quot I ve had someone test it by replacing parts who ended up saying quot it s some problem in the motherboard quot Now I know more I wonder could this be something about shorting something with static electricity Reaching in and doing things without being grounded it doesn t really matter now but I was just thinking of the seemingly LITTLE things that might make a big difference At the time I bought the A drive they told me at the computer store it was easy to put in just don t drop the screws and to leave it plugged into the plugstip but the power turned off so it would be grounded Since then I ve been told to touch the metal case first to discharge static electricity I never heard of that at the time Okay then the Packard Bell past few months I took out WIN put in tried modems many drivers settings etc It kept saying it didn t detect the modem Still doesn t I gave up on it quot for now quot till I learn more When I was first taking it apart and taking modems in and out I was turning it on it s side I later learned to turn it upside down to make it REALLY easier and being gentle with it Once when I did this right after taking the case off a little piece of white plastic fell out onto the table Just plain tiny squre of plastic bigger and thicker than what I could see on the circuit boards etc NOt as tiny as a jumper which are black It didn t have any writing or markings on it Looked more like it had broken off something than been quot wired quot on I couldn t see anything it might have fallen off or from inside the PC I thought maybe it was something under one of the case parts that had broken off and just falling out Now I m thinking could this have been something important part of a connection or something That might be keeping the modems from working I don t even know where the piece of plastic went But again it might have been something that made a difference Now I have another computer someone gave my daughter and the A drive doesn t work Though the person said he fixed it up and everything worked we ve yet to track him down and ask him about it Maybe it s something like a loose connection inside Maybe the A drive just quot died quot between the time he checked it out and brought it here and we hooked it up My point trying to define it clearly is it could be something that seemed tiny insignificiant or we miss because it seems too obvious and tiny insignificiant but would be enough to keep something from working Remember I m ... Hi and Welcome to TSF!

We are going to need a lot more infomation from you.

What is the make and model number of your computer? What do you mean by the screen keeps rolling? Can you see anything else besides your cursor?

So, my new computer has a ethernet card, video card, and sound card built into the motherboard, but I have a better sound card, video card, and ethernet card that I put in. Right now I do not get any sound or ethernet, and my video settings are stuck at absolute minimum. So, my question is, how do I go into the computer, pick the sound card, ethernet card, and video card I want, and turn off the others so that everything ends up working? Thanks for any help I receive.

Peter

A:Two of things

Check in your bios for options to turn the onboard off.

Go into device manager, on all of the onboard items go to the properties and check the disable in this hardware profile box, reboot and hope.

okie dokie. i've been building comps now for about half a year, but there is still some i guess basic stuff that i don't know. can any of you answer these questions for me? i do know some of it, but some of it i would like to have as a print out to give to any of my clients who aren't too computer literate.

before answering, take this into consideration- a: what does the part do and b: how important is it to the power of the system-

1. the difference between 32 and 64 bit systems, what's up here?

2. the gigahertz of the cpu?

3. the fsb?

4. the cache?

5. the pins?

oh, and please add some more basic termanology if you will. the more i learn the better i am at tackling problems.

A:can somebody go over a few things about cpu's for me?

1. When processors went from 16-bit to 32-bit, there was no gain in performance unless you were running software that was written for the 32-bit path. I imagine the same is true for 32- to 64-bit. I don't think there is much out there for users like us in 64-bit.

2. This is the speed at which the processor oscillates. Think of it as strokes of a pump. 1000 strokes will pump twice as much as 500 strokes. But, don't get hung up on the clock speed. That isn't all there is to it. For instance, AMD processors can do more work per cycle than an Intel processor. So, an AMD processor running at 1533 MHz can do about the same work as an Intel processor running at 1800. That is why the AMD processor that runs at 1533 is labeled 1800+. They do that to compete and so people have an idea which AMD processor compares to which Intel.

3. The faster the FSB the better. Two processors may have the same top speed, say, 2000-MHz (2-GHz); but, one may have a 200-MHz FSB and the other a 500-MHz. All other things being equal, the one with the 500-MHz FSB will slightly out-perform the 200.

4. Outside of the speed of the processor, cache is the next largest factor in speed. A powerful processor with very little cache will be a slow processor. I have a board that allows me to turn off all cache in the BIOS. See if you have one that will allow you to do the same. If you do, go in and turn off all the cache and reboot. It will slow to a crawl. Restricting a processor to a small amount of cache would be sort of like restricting its thinking space. It cramps the process.

5. Not really relevant except that you have to match the processor to the socket on the board. It's just the method of connection.

That's about as basic as I can make it.

Well between the new computer and trying to figure out this forum I'm going bananas LOL I have just figured out how to ask a question post as you can see I just hope I find the answer to my post if one is posted I do not have MS Word but do have Open Office That will open doc and ppt documents that are already on my computer but Windows Live Mail says such New around all things documents are quot dangerous quot New things all around and I can not access them when they are sent to me as attachments I have gone to a doc already on my computer and told the computer to use Open Office to open any of these documents but I still can't open attached ones I sent a document from my husbands computer to myself and I still can't do anything New things all around with them when they arrive as an email When I right click the quot dangerous quot attachment all of the options are grayed out Since I just uploaded the Open Office on my new computer I would think I have the latest version and so a version issue should not be the problem since usually new versions will open older version documents I really need to be able to do this because I am getting documents from people relative to a show I am the chairperson for Thanks Susan

Save the file attachment and then open it from the location where you saved it. Don't try to open it from inside the mail program.

A:Win Min and other things

Hi Bob and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Download CWShredder and click on Fix (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you). If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up).

Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

C:\windows\jufqohf.exe

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

A:Two things

Hi
Well to get this topic up and running, here's my 2 pence worth - As to your first question - not 100% on that, so possibly someone else will help,
But to question 2: Fences - A desktop organizer with floating portable placement directories, I find it a great tool for keeping a clear desktop, there's a free version By Stardock, it's worth trying, great results

Fences Download - By Stardock - Clean up your desktop clutter

Best regards

A:Can you help me get rid of pop ups and other odd things?

Hi bargainmom10 and
Еliminate IE is not recommended as it part of Windows is.I prefer Firefox.About Kaspersky I agree.
Rating is based on the slowest part that`s why.

Download Screen317 Security Check HERE and save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt
* Please post the contents of that document.
Note:: If any security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so
Please download MiniToolBox HERE to your desktop to run it.
Checkmark the following boxes:
* List content of Hosts
* Flush DNS
* Report IE Proxy Settings
* Reset IE Proxy Settings
* Report FF Proxy Settings
* Reset FF Proxy Settings
* List last 10 Event Viewer log
* List Installed Programs
* List Devices (do NOT change any settings here)
* List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.
Click Go and Copy / Paste the result. (result.txt)

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) HERE and run it on the computer with the issue.
Make sure the following options are checked:
        Internet Services
        Windows Firewall
        System Restore
        Security Center/Action Center
        Windows Update
        Windows Defender
        Other Services
    Press "Scan".
It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Thank you!

Q: things

i got a trojen virus on my computer just resently i have norton and avg but i would like to now what programs are good to have to to keep things safe. thanks

A:things

first you cant have two antivirus programs ..they will fight...
get rid of norton..its a resource hog
get these

Install Javacool's SpywareBlaster

It will protect you from most spy/foistware in it's database by blocking installation of their ActiveX objects.

Download and install, download the latest updates, and you'll see a list of all spyware programs covered by the program (NOTE: this is NOT spyware found on your computer)
Press "Enable All Protection", and you're done.
The spyware that you told Spywareblaster to set the "kill bit" for won't be a hazard to you any longer.
Although it won't protect you from every form of spyware known to man, it is a very potent extra layer of protection.
Don't forget to check for updates every week or so.

Let's also not forget that Spybot Search & Destroy has the Immunize feature which works roughly the same way. Another feature within Spybot is the TeaTimer option. This option immediately detects known malicious processes wanting to start and terminates them. TeaTimer also detects when something wants to change some critical registry keys and gives you an option to allow them or not.

Download this tool(AVP tool)http://majorgeeks.com/Kaspersky_Virus_Remo...Tool_d4515.htmlandDrWebCureit to a clean computer and burn to CD on a clean computer and transfer to the infected computerThe AVP tool should run in normal modeBefore we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page. Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:Double-click on launch.exe to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current versionRead the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs. The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders). If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window. If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All.When complete, click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
(This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)Now put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media. In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Ok.Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo. When the scan is complete, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.Click "Yes to all" if asked to cure or move the file(s) and select "Move incurable".In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot. After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)With some of these infections the best thing is just reloadYou'll definitely need to reinstall java and maybe FireFox

Hi there I have always formatted my computers about once a year just to keep them clean But now I have bought a HP and it had Windows XP Home installed from the factory and I have no disk for XP There is alot of things that HP has installed on the computer that I really don t want and NEVER use and I think the best way to get rid of them is just to format and FDisk the drive and install Windows clean You can make recovery disks from a program installed from HP but it also saves all the programs that I don t want Is there anyway to just make a windows backup install disk from the quot quot quot quot To Things! Want Rid Get Of Some folder that should have all the things Want To Get Rid Of Some Things! to install windows because that is where all the drivers and windows info is kept right or wrong Last what is the best way to format the hard drive can I use the boot floppy from my win SE

A:Want To Get Rid Of Some Things!

Yes you can.You sure need to burn the recovery CD's should something go wrong though.Compliments or Michael Stevens MS-MVPSee:Scroll down till you find this section:http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.htmlA lot of people appear to be unaware of the fact that you do NOT need the 4 or 5 setup disks in order to install Windows 2000 and XP. A common Win98 boot disk such as the Boot Disk Essentials diskette below can be used to install these OS's. This is what the Win XP System Setup Disk above does. Here's how to do it:Start the computer with your chosen boot disk. Change to the cd rom drive. Go into the \i386 directory on the cd rom. Run WINNT.EXE to begin the install process. The above was copied from Dr. D's web site.If a bootdisk other than the essentials is used, smartdrv.exe must be added and loaded manually before running WINNT.EXESee:http://www.easydesksoftware.com/I386.htm

A:Pop Up Things

It depends what's causing them.Do you have a firewall and is it operating? What do the windows look like? Do they look like windows messenger windows with just writing or do they have pictures like a small web page?If it has what looks like IE spawning popups you are infected with malware - adware.Do you have any anti-spyware programs like Adaware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Microsoft anti-spyware?If not, download, install them, update and run the following anti-malware programs in SAFE MODE.*AdAware SE: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/*Spybot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html *the two most important to have! Microsoft Antispyware Beta: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/s...re/default.mspxSet them to fix what they find. After running all three, run the following web based scans using Internet Explorer:Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scannerhttp://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400#betatestPanda Activescan (IE only)http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co...n_principal.htmTrend Micro antivirus and malware scan:http://housecall-beta.trendmicro.com/en/st...orp.asp?id=scanEtrust Anti-virus web scannerhttp://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx.Windows Security Trojanscanhttp://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/trojanscan.aspLet us know the results.

that really bug me. I'm searching numerous lengthy documents from the net for one word. About 50% of the time, when I hit CTRL/F, I get the search box from "Search" in the toolbar. This is really slowing me down. I've never heard of this error before. Anyone have an idea how to get CTRL/F to open 100% of the time? Will appreciate your help. Thanks.

Hello let's get a second opinion.Next run MBAM:Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.32) and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2If you have a previous version of MBAM, remove it via Add/Remove Programs and download a fresh copy.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen:Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

A:Things not quite right

Hi Have a look at this and try the removal tool:

http://sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.istbar.html

Try an online scan or two:

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

If you have never used them, both of those scans will take a while to get the Active X controls loaded and then scan all files....I would estimate a good 2 hours and have seen it take quite a lot longer. Not much you can do...

Set the settings to scan all files, Scan the whole computer, all hard drives...whatever each has. AUTOCLEAN should be checked, too. You don't get to scan unless you let the ActiveX control load, that is what gets tiring, but it should finish> it does seem to stop but you should wait and scan!

panda will let you save a report if anything is found> it will be called activescan.txt post the contents of that file along with a HJT log here when you are ready to reply.

You don't have these two programs or the latest versions? You need them both:

You will need both of these programs, and these versions...though you might have both, one or the other may be older than what I am posting and will not be as effective as they can be! You need to check the Build of AdAware you have, it's right on the main window, we are using AdAware SE personal edition (the free one) v. 1.05 now, and even though you are just installing it, it will have some detection updates just after you install it, unless you get very lucky!

SpyBot Search and Destroy v. 1.3> is the latest. The older versions are abandoned and will not give you any more updates!

Both of those programs are available here:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

Here are the directions for installing, updating, and using them:
AdAware:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Restart your computer.

SpyBot 1.3:

Install the program and launch it.

Before scanning press Online and Search for Updates .

Put a check mark at and install all updates.

Click Check for Problems and when the scan is finished let Spybot fix/remove all it finds marked in RED.

Restart your computer.

I think my wife downloaded some viruses.

If I power off the computer let it sit and turn it back on 50% of the time a cursor will be blinking in the top left and will not progress until I reset the computer a second time and finally it gets to the XP loading screen.

Also, I have a few games I still play that are a little old (Command and Conquer Generals & Stronghold) and now they will not run. C&C loads up until I pick a saved game and then it terminates and a message pops up saying that I either have a virus or my hardware is not sufficient to run the program. I know I have the hardware so methinks it is a virus.

I ran stopzilla and it found 27 problems and I had it fix them, however I rebooted the system and all the problems are still there, Help!

My OS is XP

Please print out and follow these instructions: "How to use SDFix". When using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with "Administrative rights"Disconnect from the Internet and temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any real time protection programs before performing a scan. When done, the SDFix report log will open in notepad and automatically be saved in the SDFix folder as Report.txt.If SDFix is unable to run after rebooting from Safe Mode, run SDFix in either Mode, and type F, then press Enter for it to finish the final stage and produce the report. Please copy and paste the contents of Report.txt in your next reply.Be sure to renable you anti-virus and and other security programs before connecting to the Internet.-- If the computer has been infected with the VirusAlert! malware warning from the clock and the Start Menu icons or drives are not visible, open the SDFix folder, right-click on either the XP_VirusAlert_Repair.inf or W2K VirusAlert_Repair.inf (depending on your version of Windows) and select Install from the Context menu. Then reboot to apply the changes. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. Reagardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

First off I got what I thought was gonna be a screensaver and background online, but the file is on my computer and I can't do anything with it. I can't move delete it, move it, rename it. Even if I right Click on it, nothing comes up. I've ran norton and nothing came up and the file just seems to be stuck in the folder it's in, I can't even move it to the recycle bin. If anyone has any advice I'd be grateful.

Also, I'm looking for a program to minimize my .mpeg and .mpg files so the size is smaller. I heard about a NVS program by nullsoft, but when I downloaded it, it didn't work. If anyone knows of a program that does this or one similar, please help.

Thanks!

Hi there! I am new here, and just got Win7 Ultimate RC 7137, and so far it?s been pretty sweet (: I?ve upgraded from Vista Ultimate, and everything went well. But there are two things I would like to answer:

First is: Is there a way for me to change that "Welcome Screen"? I mean that blue background in the start. And second is that I just CAN?t save my login and password to connect to my ISP! I click there, fill my login, my pass, and select "remember this password", check the option "anyone who uses this computer", and connect. Then if I disconnect, and try again, it asks for my login and pass. Any ideas? thank you very much. Great forum btw. (:

Sorry about the first question, just used the search here (:

A:Help with 2 things pls

1. Log On Screen - Change will help with changing the login screen.

Hey, i think it was probally a mistake by me due to fiddling, but i changed the icon for my hard drive and now when i double click to access it a new window appears to search. this happens on both the icon for my internal and external hard drives, its jus a little thing but it is quite annoying to have to right click and then go to open every time.

December rd I got a brand new HP after my dell wouldn't turn on anymore Sadly different things. few A my only choice in OS was windows It's been nothing but problems from the A few different things. start The problems I'm most concerned with It won't let me choose Eastern Time US amp Canada Instead it keeps putting it back to Pacific It's highly annoying I tried changing it and it says I have to log in to my Microsoft account and VERIFY my account Which I did the first day I got the computer I am set up as administrator last time I looked I was anyways So what could be causing this other than Microsoft screwed up when they made Windows The last issue I have is there is times my Chrome icon goes missing I search the computer for it only to find it's no longer there Same thing with Minecraft and a webcam application Not sure why it does that But it's just as annoying as all the rest Any help will be GREATLY appreciated It's more tempting each day to go back to Linux or at least partition the drive Only reason i haven't yet is because a GHZ quad core with AMD graphics can run any game I want It's nice having that option

I couldnt find a thread about this, probably just cant find it. Sorry if dupplicated.

Here are some of the things I like about it....and why I pre-ordered it.

#1. Its not Vista
#2. It is Vista (Done Right!)
#3. Pretty Like Vista, yet Fast and Stable Like XP!
#4. Drivers for Vista usually work for W7 (in a pinch).
#5. Works well with Games (even older COD2)
#6. It really uses all my Ram, XP just kept loading up page file and would
have 3 Gig Ram Free!
#7. Stayed fast after installing all my games and programs!
#8. Pre order pricing!

Side note on stability, I noticed much better handling of errors even with overclocking. I have a dual boot and while testing OC settings XP would BSOD frequently when system was unstable, W7 would close a program or tell me a driver stopped responding and kick me back to desktop, rare BSOD I think I have only seen 1 or 2 the entire time with RC!

A:Many Things

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster. NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of hartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer. NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.DeFogger: Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
The application window will appear Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers Click Yes to continue A 'Finished!' message will appear Click OKDeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OKDo not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.Security CheckDownload Security Check by screen317 from here.Save it to your Desktop.Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.Download DDS:Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

I happened to go to bitdefender.com to do an online scan. I love that place by the way lol. Well it found a trojan or some type of virus in notepad.exe and since it deleted the file, it deleted notepad!

Can you tell me how that could have happened, and could you tell me what I can do to get it back?

A:Help on 2 things

Hi,

As you haven't told use your O/S ect. I am just telling you roughly what to do, as the way I am describing is for Win 98se. Also the name of the virus would be handy..Cheers

Click start -> Run -> type: sfc then press enter. This command will put you to the system file checker scan for notepad using this tool and install it.

You will need your origional Windows CD-ROM for this. This is one way, I'm sure there will be other ways, if so someone will assist.

First off, i'm kinda new to this board, so if I am posting something in the wrong area I apologise, but I kind of need to know what's going on here.

First of all, I have a file that WON'T delete or move, no matter what. It says its being used but Ive checked everything and nothing is using the file.

Here's what i get -

http://img430.imageshack.us/img430/5...rmoving5jn.png

Second, my computer is really slow, and I have no idea how to make it faster. I have a 60 gig hard drive with 7.10 gigs of space left, and have 248 mb of RAM.

also I have NO idea how to burn CDs, i've tried Nero, CD Burner XP (not sure what it's called exactly), windows media player, etc. and they just give me random errors. It's not the CDs i have either, those work. is there some kind of codec i would need for this?

thanks

A:A few things...

Hi and welcome to TSF.

What is the name of the file you are trying to delete? Have you tried Safe Mode?

Have you tried clearing out Temp files, Temp Internet files and defragging the drive? (watch because you're getting near the limit for defragging - 15% free space required I think).

Have you run virus scans? Try some of the tools in my sig below.

248MB is a bit low for XP - you'd be better off with 512MB.

I'm not a CD expert so perhaps someone else will pick that up for you.

ok so theres two things here, i use mozilla firefox as my web browser but randomly my internet explorer always opens for no reason.

the second thing is i cant close system processes in the task manager. it says unable to terminate process

A:Two Things

"the second thing is i cant close system processes in the task manager. it says unable to terminate process"

Your system is using these processes to work, if you terminated them your PC would crash.

Some programs automatically use IE to access the web. You can't really do much about this unless you can find an option to change.

Cheers

Every so often some unsolicited, unwanted thing just appears. The latest is some sort of backup that appeared on the external hard drive where I store photos.
As you can see from the screen shot, when I highlight the icon it says the folder is empty. But when I try to delete it, it says it's too large for the Recycle bin.
1. How can I stop all this Win 7 stuff from appearing?
2. How can I delete the folder in question?

A:Unwanted things appear

You have scanned for viruses, malware, spyware and what not.. Hav'nt you.

I only ask as from first look, its as if you have been hijacked.

Hi TSF community,

I am experiencing a problem where I can't click on anything in the control panel nor can I click on avalable wifi networks when I open avalable connections from the toolbar. With these two problems combined I am not able to connect to the wifi (I am currently on my phone). I don't believe this to be a problem with my mouse becuase I can click on other things and have it work. I have tried restarting and booting in safe mode. I am not extremely tech savy, but I'm not horrible with computers. Any help or ideas would be welcome.

Thanks,
Kpache32

Hello, I am trying to improve my ability to maintain my computer and care for the OS better, I ran the Hijackthis, but this is a new tool for me. I read through the tutorial and went to http://www.systemlookup.com to check the items that came back as 018.Mod Edit: Removed HJT log data, as this is an outdated malware tool...and this forum does not analyze HJT or any number of malware tools which a member may post - Hamluis.

A:How do I read this log to fix things?

As noted above, the Win 7 forum is not the place to received instructions on using malware tools...it is for Windows 7 problems and situations, not for tutoring on how to use tools such as HJT.See Announcement At Main Forum Webpage. .If you have a malware problem that you want assistance with...please follow the Preparation Guide, Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html , taking note that the forum for handling malware logs is linked to in the Prep Guide. Thanks .Louis

I have 2 questions to ask

1- in the display properties and appearance tab where I select a color schemes I only have 3 choices - thought there should be more - is my computer missing them if not where can I go to get some that are free so I can change the look - my old windows 98 use to have a lot to choose from ?

2 - Also is there a way when my welcome screen shows up that I can lock people out of my computer where they will need a password in order to get on to my desktop - I should mention that I have microsoft windows xp home edition version 2002 with service pack 2

On my other computer I can lock people out at the welcome screen but can not figure it out on my other computer ?

Thank you in advance for any help

Dear Forum Often I go surfing web sites and scroll down the vertical side bar with my mouse pointer bringing the small rectangle to the bottom to bring up additional Things OverSized test pictures and stories from quot beneath quot the screen The problem is that I usually scroll down very fast because these sites have a great deal of information OK but an added problem is that when I go back a page to study something further and then return to page in question that page doesn t necessarily begin where I left off but begins at the very start Then I have to scroll down all over again from the beginning to where I left off earlier That s just one issue Well OverSized Things lately I ve been getting impatient with that and so I got into the habit of scrolling down zippity-do-dah like a dozen times in just OverSized Things a few seconds Sometimes my screen goes blank when I do that because desktop loses information and I must restart my desktop manually I should have learned my lesson Last night I did it again but I think I also did it when Microsoft was downloading new stuff for Windows at the same time When I tried to restart my desktop it indicated that Windows had a lot of new updates that were undergoing download Be patient don t turn off your computer so forth Anyway before that I got a triangular warning message with an exclamation mark while was zipping through the latest site telling me to leave the web site because desktop was in danger of losing information So I left the website immediately But I guess I wasn t quick enough All of a sudden my screen the fonts titles title pages EVERYTHING became quite enlarged The icons on the Desktop page became very large and spread out everywhere some off the page One icon in particular was a jumbled mass and incomprehensible until I realized that I only needed to drag icons of other sites off of it because there seemed to a hundred other site icons that were sitting on the lap of that one icon OK so I did that I ve tried to reduce font site The computer is telling me through Control Panel that everything is already in size Apparently is the smallest the next size up is No matter how I try to reset things working the screen things don t get smaller My Start option is working so I m able to get to Windows stuff like Control Panel and things like that The ONLY thing that has worked so far is Holding down the CTRL button and rotating the vertical wheel backward on my mouse at the same time Problem is I have to do that for each page I m not sure exactly how I messed up but I sure could use some advice Thanks I neglected to mention that some pages have to be actually expanded if I have made the fonts too small I have a SamsungSyncMaster B and a GetForce GT Nvidia driver I may have also tried to alter settings with that when I opened its page to see if I could change things to fix things I ACCIDENTLY REPOSTED THIS MESSAGE UNDERNEATH BEFORE I ADDED MOST OF THE LAST PARAGRAPH SORRY PEOPLE Comtrain nbsp

Are there any general rules about what to include in Start-Up?
eg - I may be starting programs I don't often use ...
so they could be deleted from the start-up list.
- Does a large Start-Up list slow down the computer and add work?
- Where can I find out what entries actually are?
In the capture attached is a list of this laptop's Start-Up.
Quite honestly I don't have a clue what they mean?
Look fwd to yr imput.

A:Start Up - What are all these things?

It would be my advice not to tweek the start up items, if you are not sure of their function. Some are obvious by the name, but the benefit of turning them off are nominal. All you need to do is follow the astute advice in this tutorial. You may follow the steps regarding startup if you feel that you have the expertise to do so.
Optimize Windows 7

In addition, here is a great post from my favorite meerkat regarding mainteance.
