Whining sound coming from speakers and headphones

Q: Whining sound coming from speakers and headphones

Okay so here s the history The other night I came home to a high pitch noise coming from my turtle beach headphones Upon removing the headphones from my computer I the sound started coming from my speakers I then shut off my computer I removed everything except the power cord I could hear a different yet similar whine Upon opening my computer I heard the noise coming from within I then took out the video card and started the beast back up Same thing After hours of browsing forums on my phone I decided it was either my CPU or PSU I then removed the PSU and jump started it to check whether or not it was making the sound Whining coming speakers from and headphones noise It ran fine and made no noise However upon connecting it to the motherboard and starting it I then heard the noise again When I listened closely to the CPU I heard nothing then I listened to the PSU which was outside of my case this time and I could hear not only the high pitched whine but also a slight crackling noise It was then that I jumped on newegg and ordered a new PSU http www newegg com Product Prod After long unbearable night and into the morning the PSU was here and I spent hours carefully setting it up and organizing the cords in and around my computer NOW THE GOOD STUFF Upon turning on my computer everything seemed fine I quickly jumped on youtube and started a video no sound coming from my headphones I then pulled out my headphones from the jack No sound coming from my speakers It was then I realized I could hear the ever so dim whine coming from my speakers As far as I can tell there is no noise coming from my new PSU I can hear the sound JUST fine when I plug in my samson go mic and plug my headphones into THAT microphone yeah I know it sounds weird but think of it as a little mini external sound card or something When I play youtube videos with my speakers plugged in I have Whining sound coming from speakers and headphones to crank the volume up on both the speakers and the computer and even then it s super quiet When I play videos with my headphones plugged in in the front of the computer it makes no noise until the volume is around but the sound is just a crackly distorted version of whatever I have playing I have never had an issue with my computer so far so I m honestly not too sure what s going on The sound seems to start when Windows starts loading I have run a CPU stress test and the sound remains the same throughout I have also tried switching which outlet I am using for my computer Here are my computer specs Intel i - k CPU GHz GB DDR RAM -bit Windows Ultimate Fatal ty Z Professional Gen http www asrock com mb overview asp Model Fatal ty Z Professional Gen Updated BIOS NVIDIA GeForce GTX GB OCZ Vector SSD with OS installed on it TB WD Drive TB External WD Drive COOLER MASTER HAF X http www newegg com Product Product aspx Item N E - Not that it really matters Here s my -bit DxDiag http pastebin com sF B rrJ So yeah aside from knowing my motherboard is failing what can you tell me to convince me otherwise lol I refuse to believe that it could be my motherboard because well its been a good board thus far and I haven t seen anything like this when searching google so I feel like it can t be so isolated The only thing I can think of is I just bought a Doctor Who levitating tardis which uses a magnet to make the TARDIS well levitate The magnet is inside the tardis itself and isn t really powerful at all The stand does something that keeps the magnet from reaching the top somehow Nevertheless this thing was on the top of my computer for a week before my computer started making these noises I don t think it s related to the issue as it wasn t exactly all that close to any of the parts nor do I believe it to be any stronger than magnets you might find in a speaker that sits near your computer If anything it s a lot weaker than that So I m guessing its not that but I figured I d at least add that in nbsp

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone. I have my headphones plugged in and am getting poor sound quality out of them. My computer says that the sound is coming through my speakers, but its not (its just coming through the headphones.) I've attached a picture of what the comp's showing me for reference. I've tried going to the Sound menu and making the headphones the default device, with no luck. This issue seemed to happen after I was done using Google video chat with my headphones plugged in. I am trying to get the sound quality in my headphones back to normal. They work with every other device. Please help!

Hi, I'm having trouble getting sounds to come out of my speakers. I downloaded the SB live drivers and turned digital output on and yet I'm getting no sound coming out for my speakers. However when I turn digital output off I get sounds from my headphones just fine. I checked all the volume controls to make sure nothing is muted yet no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, Most speakers for computers do not take a digital input so that is causing a problem some where. Where are you plugging the headphones and speakers?

Hi everyone, I bought a new computer recently and the sound doesn't seem to be working. I've tried updating the drivers, restarting the PC, downloading Windows Updates and none of them seem to work.

If anyone has a fix for this I'd be very grateful.

I've googled and googled and everything I've tried I either don't have the options or it didn't work. The issue is whenever I plug in my headset.. both my laptop's speakers and mic work.. as well as my headset's speakers and mic. I'm plugging the headset into the audio and mic jacks on the laptop.

My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5570-2052 (Came with Vista, I installed XP Home)

Under the Device Manager's Sound, video, and game controllers list I have:
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Realtek High Definition Audio
Video Codecs

I also have Realtek HD Audio Manager installed.

What I want to happen is when I plug in my headphone's mic and speaker jacks the laptop's mic/speaker turns off. I've tried messing with all kinds of stuff with no luck at all.

So Recently I got a new computer its an Acer It only has one jack for headphones and microphones and usually when I plug one in it works fine and asks me to clarify which I'd like to use I switch between headphones and microphone a lot so coming sound headphones but work No speakers from its a very useful tool for me Though recently when I plug it in it no longer gives me the option to choose and no sound plays from the headphones and it instead plays from the speakers whether its plugged in or not It also dims the sound a No sound coming from headphones but speakers work bit when they're plugged in so I think it decided I was mainly only going to use microphone and set it to a mic one regardless of what's plugged in I'm not very tech savvy but I tried my No sound coming from headphones but speakers work best to fix it I tried other headsets It is the same I tried half plugging it in or fiddling with it Its the same I tried going into the sound playback list and seeing if it was disabled and it is not It does not even show headphones as an option though it does show 'speaker's I tried messing around in those settings and restoring them to default and nothing worked I also tried going to the mic settings For the mic settings there is two different options 'microphone' which I assume is the one I usually plug in since I can just plug my mic in and it works now and stereo mix I'v tried disabling the mic and enabling stereo mix and vise verse and tried restoring to default and tried making it forget about the mic and putting it back on and nothing is working and I really would like to use my headset since I listen to very loud music and other things of course

A:No sound coming from headphones but speakers work

Try a reinstall and see if it fixes the problem. Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for your sound device (Could be Realtek, Conexant, etc) and then LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This fixes a lot of corruptions and may fix your problem.

In reference to the Stereo Mix, that should be set as the default Recording device. Then if you use the mic it will be heard, or if you want to record audio from the Internet you must have the Stereo Mix.

Hi I have a Dell Inspiron Q15R model. Recently the sound is coming only from my headphones, speakers don't work. I'm suspecting that I have a failed sense pin. Warranty is over. I have tried various solutions but they were all in vain. Is there a way how I can disable the headphone jack? Thanks for your response

mgau0047Is there a way how I can disable the headphone jack?
Hello. All of the workarounds I have heard about are in section 5 of the Headphone Jack FAQ.
mgau0047I have tried various solutions but they were all in vain.
Did you run the audio tests in the ePSA or PSA diagnostic utility to make sure the speakers are still working?
mgau0047Inspiron Q15R model
I'm not familiar with that model. I wonder if it is a variation of one of the Inspiron 15R models, which are 552, 5521, 5537, and N5110. I can't find a Q15R on the tech support pages.

Finally, what is the operating system. If Windows 10, recent "updates" have caused all kinds of audio problems, so it could be related to that.

Hi,

I have the following problem with Dell Inspiron N5010 with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit: When headphones are connected to the headphone jack, the laptop speakers will not disable.

The laptop recognizes headphones (test sounds are coming through) and they can be used for communications, e.g. Skype. The laptop has IDT High Definition Audio CODEC driver's latest version.

On the other hand, sound from softwares and games are coming from the speaker.

According to me, the problem would be that it is not possible to switch headphones as default device in control panel -> sound.
See the Attached pic, even if i click "Default Device" for headphones it does nothing, there is no tickmark even after clicking
Pls Help!

Apparently, This problem was caused after my motherboard and heatsink were replaced by dell service guy due to overheating.

On my HP ProBook 450 G2 which is running Windows 10 Pro with 3.88 GB of usable memory out of 4 GB with a 64 bit operating system --- regardless of it being speakers, headphones, etc., any device plugged into the headphones jack will not play sound through it. Hi Guys

When I plug my headphones in the sound comes from the headphones and laptop speakers. Obviously with headphones plugged in sound should only come from the headphones and not speakers aswell.

This didnt happen before. When I plugged my headphones in before I`d get a message saying "a jack has been plugged in" I no longer get that message when I plug them in.

I have windows vista and realtek HD audio manager, my laptop is an acer aspire 5050. Does anyone no why this is happening?

I appreciate your help

Hello I've got a Thinkpad T s Windows here and it's acting strangely Namely if I play a clip through the speakers, headphones Sound works but through not coming with laptop laptop's speakers I hear no sound but when I plug the headphones everything works nice and neat One thing I noticed is that computer actually recognises the sound because the volume mixer application at the lower right tray and it's volume bar shows me the green indicators jumping up and down as the music plays Of course Sound not coming through laptop speakers, but works with headphones I've tried reinstalling the drivers I've uninstalled the audio device in Device Manager and restarted the computer And yes the obvious things are also checked - nothing the applications is Sound not coming through laptop speakers, but works with headphones muted in the volume mixer default device is correct under playback devices Some have reported on the web that it might help to use toothpick for example and quot un-jam the sensor quot but that didn't help either I've also tried booting up the newest Linux Mint has pretty good multimedia support from the USB and I heard no sound through speakers So I'm out of ideas here It looks more and more like a hardware fault but how can I be absolutely sure Thanks for helping out starsplash

I have a rather annoying thingy with my laptop. When I do something on my laptop where noise is involved ( play games , play music , etc. etc. ) and I have ear plugs / headphones inserted , the sound is coming out of both my speakers and my headset.I do not know how long I already have the problem, I discovered it today when I took my headphones off for a moment.

Do any of you know how I can fix this? So that if I insert my headphones , the sound just goes through the headphones and not through the speakers at the same time. I Googled for a while now but I cant find a way to solve it. (Im not a PCs / laptops expert)

Hello. Please post your problem again, because half of your text has been chopped off. You might have to type it instead of paste.
Try switching to the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on the Creative Labs Recon driver.3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.[To get back to the Recon driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]If you only have the symptoms with one of the drivers, then the other is at fault. If you have the same symptoms with both audio drivers, then it is very probably not a driver issue, maybe hardware.

With Dell Support Assist microphone test -- earphone playback is good, on-board speaker is terribly scratchy. The sound card lists as "ATI high Definition Audio Device" and "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC."
The laptop is Dell Studio 15 (1555) running windows 7 Professional, 236GB used, 214GB free space, Intel P8700 2.53 GHz Processor, 64 bit OS, 4GB memoryThe built-in speakers used to sound good but now they are too scratchy to understand. However the headset and external speakers (both 3.5 mm jack interface) sound good and a HDMI connected projector sounds good.
I will appreciate advice.

A:On-board speakers are scratchy but external speakers & headphones sound good?

Hello. As a test, switch from the IDT audio driver to the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "IDT High Definition Audio Device".3. If not prompted, then no need to restart.[To get back to the IDT driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]
If you get the noise while using the native driver then it is not a driver issue, which would mean there is a strong chance of speaker failure, particularly since the noise is not in headphones. If you would like to replace the speakers I can point you to the service manual.

A:i have no sound coming from my headphones

Do you currently have sound on your computer? What is the make and model# of your computer? Where are you plugging your headphones in? Plug them into the Back Green Audio port out of the back of the computer. Unless you have audio ports in the front.
Go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager are there any yellow flags next to any devices? If so these devices need to have drivers installed. go to the manufacturers support/download drivers site and type in your service tag# or your make and model # and download the audio driver and any other drivers for your computer.
If you do have sound through your speakers, but you do not have the speaker Icon in your system tray in the lower right hand; Take note of the Sound device in the Device Manager (RealTek or whatever) Go to Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices. Put a check box in Put Volume Icon in System Tray. Go to the Audio tab make sure the default play back device is the same sound card in the Device Manager. Go to the Volume tab, make sure the volume is all the way up. Go to the Advanced button make sure nothing is muted. Go Speaker SettingsAdvanced choose Headphones.

I have a HP Pavillion G6 with Windows 7 (64-bit). The issue came randomly one day a couple of months ago, I turned on my laptop and there was no sound. I tried headphones, no sound. When I tried hooking up my laptop to my tv with a hdmi cord, it did work. I've tried re-downloading, uninstallling, updating, rolling back every driver I could find for my audio. I even restored my computer to factory settings. I am really out of ideas here, please help!

Hi everyone,
Sound is only coming out of my left speaker, the secondary speaker (the one without hte volume button, headphone slots etc.) Wiggling the cable used to make it work again but now it just doesn't work at all it seems. Is there anything I can do about it?
My speakers are Logitech Z323

A:Sound only coming out of one speaker, comes out of both headphones

Try making and un-making the connection and even a little blast of compressed air to try cleaning the receptacle. Does the other channel come on when you wiggle the plug?

Why would speakers sound scratchy, but headphones and external cabled speakers sound OK? I have a Dell Studio 15 (1555) running windows 7 Professional.

236GB used, 214GB free space
Intel P8700 2.53 GHz Processor
64 bit OS
4GB memory

The built-in speakers used to sound good but now they are too scratchy to understand. However the headset sound is good. According to the Dell Support Assist utility, the sound card is "ATI high Definition Audio Device" and "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC."
Microphone test -- earphone playback is OK, on-board speaker terrible.

A:Why would on-board speakers sound scratchy but headphones sound OK?

You Dell Studio 1555 laptop uses IDT HD audio driver for the built in laptop speakers.
The ATI HD audio driver is only used if an HDMI connection to an HDMI monitor (with an HDMI audio/video cable) is used.

possibly a driver conflict with IDT audio, built-in speakers may be malfunctioning or dirty (gotta have them repaired if it's a hardware problem and not a software problem). just listing the possible causes for the scratchy sound.

I had my computer recently restored after a virus problem, and now that it's back up, everything seems to be fine - except for the audio. I cannot receive any sounds from my headphones or speakers plugged into the jacks; however, when i plug in the same pair of headphones with a USB adapter, i can hear sound. How can i fix this problem?

Hi,

I have the Dell XPS 8300 with the onboard Realtek HD Audio.

I can't get any sound from speakers/headphones using any of the ports at the back and the front audio jack.

The speakers are fine as I have tested them on my mobile.

I have the latest drivers installed. Sound is working fine though HDMI on my TV but i'm guessing that's using my graphics card.

I have headphones/speaker selected in sound manager. Also realtek sound manager is detecting that my speakers are connected to the audio jacks at the back and front but still no sound.

In sound manager I can see the green bar moving up/down for Speakers/Headphones.

Could the sound chip on motherboard be fried?
Thanks for you help.

I plugged my headphones into the back and sound is working through them. Any suggestions?

How do I prevent sound from coming through both headphones and speakers at same time?

You will have to reconfigure your motherboards sound configuration. The Audio header has to be configured for HD (Hi-Definition)... You may have to contact HP tech support to do this

This problem is not new, I have had it for several months now. On my 5 year old Dell Inspiron E1505 I have sound through my speakers but not through any headphones, I tried 3 sets of headphones in all 4 USB ports and in the pin type jack, nothing. I tried everything I know of by downloading the latest Sigma Tel Driver from Dell, going into properties, disable, then enable after reboot, select headphones over laptop speakers, etc.

Anytime I would plug my headphones in, it would automatically switch over but it just stopped all of a sudden. However I do have a conflict in my Device Manager under Network Adapters called Other Devices with a yellow question mark with a file name underneath called BCM2045 with a yellow question mark that I disabled. This showed up shortly after my headphone problem started, not sure that would have anything to do with my headphones but it seems odd.

This probably is a really simple problem but I can't solve it. I run Windows XP pro. My speakers worked fine until I plugged in the headphones to use with Skype. Now sound only runs thru headphones and even if I unplug them there is no sound thru the speakers. All connections seem fine. I had the same problem on another pc and never was able to find the reason.

A:No sound thru speakers after using headphones

It could be that Skype made that headset your default sound device. Most people have Microphones that come built into their computers now lately. Try uninstalling Skype and reinstalling it.
Go into your Volume Control and check to see what the name of the device it is sending the sound to. If it says its your headset when they are not plugged in, it is the headsets problem.
START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>ENTERTAINMENT> VOLUME CONTROL

Also try your Device manager.
RIGHT CLICK MY COMPUTER> MANAGE> "In the left side menu click DEVICE MANAGER"
Make sure that your headset is not still working even though not plugged in. Right click the name of your headset and click disable.
Hope some of this will help.
After you do this try resetting and check by playing a song or something.

I'm renting from someone living in his house with 2 other people next room over. Audio plays out of my speakers whether my head phone is plugged in or not so I know its not the head phone age. I use the front jack for the headphone. The computer doesn't list my headphone either in the available unites when plugged in. I use realtek audio device. I've been all over the manager all over screen shots of advice and de installed than re installed real tek.. Same issue. Audio from the computer, not the headphone plugged in or not and not listed on the available devices or anything.

Any ideas other than driver updates or broken jack flack would be wonderful..

The sound on my computer is coming out of both the headphones and the onboard speakers. This is a new computer, right out of the box, so I don't know what exactly could be making it do this. All the drivers are up to date to my knowledge, but the computer doesn't seem to be recognizing the headphones when I put them into the jack.

Also, on a related note, if I turn up the volume high, I get high-pitched feedback.

I'm using an Asus U41S. Sound card is Realtek HD.

For months I have used my headphones without problem. At the weekend I unplugged them and connected my Phillips speakers which worked fine. Later that day I swapped back and the sound has vanished. I tried reconnecting the speakers and now they don't work either.

Hi,

I have the following problem with new Compaq 515 with Windows 7: when headphones are connected to the headphone jack, the laptop speakers will not disable and headphones or external speakers woun't work.

The laptop recognizes headphones (test sounds are coming through) and they can be used for communications, e.g. Skype. The laptop has IDT High Definition Audio CODEC driver's latest version.

Strangely, it is not possible to switch headphones as default device in control panel -> sound. The laptop has following options: Speakers/HP as default device and Headphones (RTC) appear as "Default Communications Device" when selected as default device. I'm not sure this is the problem but it seems strange enough.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

On my brand new Asus laptop, I have not been able to figure out how to get sound out of my headphones when I plug them in. On my old laptop, if I plugged in the headset, sound went there automatically. Not on the new computer. The headset I have has a USB plug. I was able to get sound out of them once- by disabling the speakers, Realtek Digital Output and Realtek HMDI Output--- if I just disable the speakers, the default goes to the Digital Output and I get no sound at all, so I had to disable everything. AND, in order to get all that back, I had to do a system restore to an earlier date because I have no idea how to get them back otherwise. Please help.

You need to select the "Speakers" as the default device if you have it set to "Digital Output" you wont get any sound at all, Go into Control Panel\Sound and rightclick on "Speakers" and select default device.

A:Latitude E7440 - Sound not coming through headphones

elizabeth1579 I am debating getting a USB adapter for my headphones, but I am not sure that would solve the problem if it is a software issue.
The usb jacks are very inexpensive and to me would be worth the risk that it might not work. You could test for hardware failure (or fix the software if it is a software issue) by resetting the laptop back to the original factory configuration, but for many people it would be worth a few dollars to try to avoid doing that.
Usually when headphones are not detected by the Realtek driver but are when using the native driver, the solution is to completely remove the Realtek software the way you did it and then install an earlier version of the Realtek driver. However it is hard to figure out your laptop's symptoms. Normally if there is the same symptom with both the vendor's driver and the native driver, that is strongly suggestive of hardware failure because both drivers are not likely to have the same bug at the same time. In your case though I wouldn't bet on it either way.

I have no applications running at all in Windows. I have the system sound muted, but I still have some sound coming out of the speakers. It sounds like some talk radio. I also have all networking disabled. I have no idea where this is coming from.

How can I tell if any process on my computer is accessing the sound drivers?

A:Solved: computer sound muted but sound is still coming from speakers

In some cases, if the speakers are cheaply made and not sheilded, they can acutally pickup radio waves (especially if you live near a radio tower). Does the "Talk radio" continue if the speakers are on, while the computer is off?

Hello I m having a little problem with my speakers down No after got) (headphones from shut sound speakers As written in my title my speakers has no sound I have No sound from speakers (headphones got) after shut down went through almost all the related forums on this kind of problems but it seems that almost everyone has problem with the speaker s sound AFTER they installed something or upgraded their software after i shut my computer down at night and on it back the next morning the speakers weren t working and when i play a mp avi rmvb or even youtube there is no sound at all However if i plug in my headphones they work just fine Everything else is working fine - The light on the speakers is light up - The wire is plugged into the green hole It hasn t been moved since about a year ago so i don t think thats the problem - The sound card is working fine There is sound through the headphones - There are no conflicting drives - There are no exclamation marks or crosses in the device manager - My audio isn t mute I m suspecting that my speakers is spoiled But i m hoping that someone could help me with it Because it just doesn t make sense how the speakers could be perfectly fine one moment and be spoilt after a shut down I can t use systerm restore because when i tried it it says that it couldn t return to the specific time and to solve that problem i cancel the system restore shut down and then enable it again Edit My speakers does have those buzzing sound those kind that signals the speakers is on when i on it and when i off it Which i presume means that the speaker should be able to work Or else it wouldn t be making noises like that right and there are really faint buzzing sounds when the speakers is on I m only able to hear it if i put the volume to the max and stick my ear to the speakers which also shows that it should be able to work right Please help and thank you nbsp

A:No sound from speakers (headphones got) after shut down

When you plug in the headphones are you plugging them into a front panel jack? Try removing the speaker plug from the green jack at the back and plug in the headphones there. If you get sound through the headphones, your sound card is probably okay but your speakers are not.

Because it just doesn't make sense how the speakers could be perfectly fine one moment, and be spoilt after a shut down.Click to expand...

But isn't that the nature of a component failure? It often works fine up until the moment it doesn't. You don't always get a gradual failure. When it fails, it fails.

I just reinstalled Windows XP and I ve updated it to SP My audio but from not Sound works speakers headphones hardware is a Sound Blaster Audigy ZS card I reinstalled all the device drivers from the Dell resource CD as well as Sound works from headphones but not speakers downloaded the latest driver for the audio card plus I got the AC- codec as well No sound comes from the speakers which are hooked up correctly When I run diagnostics and tests Windows seems Sound works from headphones but not speakers to miss the fact that it s not coming through the speakers I know there s no problem with the hardware as it functions just fine when I run linux The strange thing is that the sound works fine when I plug the headphones into the jack I had originally thought it was the Multimedia Audio Controller problem so many other people seemed to have when reinstalling Windows but after installing the Dell drivers and updating the Sound Blaster one the Multimedia Audio Controller isn t in the quot Other Drivers quot tab with a big question mark next to it so that doesn t seem to be the issue Then someone told me he had a similar problem and was able to fix it by going into Setup and enabling audio which Sound works from headphones but not speakers I tried but it was already enabled So I m stumped Any ideas I m running a Dell Dimension with a Sound Blaster Audigy ZS card Windows XP currently Service Pack nbsp

A:Sound works from headphones but not speakers

I'd hazard the guess that the problem still lies in the audio settings under XP inasmuch that the mic-in/headphone-out setting differs to mic-in/speakers out. Don't know your hardware but found on mine that I had to use a different audio (mini) jack-out for the speakers and then change audio settings. Do you have some additional output-mini jacks?

Very strange...I get sound when headphones are plugged in, but when they are not, no sound comes from the built-in computer speakers. I have had my computer for about 4 months, and the speakers worked previously; this just started within the last couple days. Any ideas?

Try a System Restore - How to. If it still doesn't work, have the laptop check as its just 4 months old, call HP to have the speakers replaced.

Strange problem! I have some sounds that play through my speakers when headphones are plugged in. For example, if I run Skype, the Skype will play through the headphones (properly), but iTunes will play through speakers, as will anything else.

This also happens when playing Borderlands - I have to unplug and replug headphones to get it to go back!

What gives? How to fix this?

I have IDT HDA as my sound card. Windows forced me to install NVIDIA HDA as well, so I have 2 sound drivers - NVIDIA HDA and IDT HDA AUDIO CODEC.

hi everybody

I recently bought Acer Aspire 4738 i5 (running 7 ultimate 32bit) and I love it so far. however there's a problem with sound when I plug in the headphone.

when I play it through the build-in speakers the sound is great and actually loud , I've tried another headphones (bought three already :/ ) and still the same thing.

updated the drive, checked the volume to max, tried about everything i could find but nothing seems to work.

I'm starting to think this is an OS issue,

1) Speakers + Redirected Headphones (currently default)
2) Independent (R.T.C.) Headphones 1
3) Independent (R.T.C.) Headphones 2
4) Digital Output Device (SPDIF Out)

I have tried using headphones with all four of these as default. The only way I can get any sound at all is to use the first option.

A:Playing sound from both speakers and headphones

What is the make and model of the computer? What operating system and sound card are you using? This information will help us narrow down the problem.

I would start by checking your Windows audio settings for anything you can mute or un-mute that would be related to the issue. I would check the sound card manufacturer's program as well if there is one, they usually have a lot of additional settings like "detect headphones when plugged in" that can cause this.

Hi any advice here would be helpful.

I have a Inspiron 15 5555 laptop which was purchased in March this year. Everything was running okay on it apart from the Graphics card which kept crashing but thats a whole different story. my issue is with the sound. a few days ago i turned my laptop on and it told me i had a device plugged in and was highlighting the headphones. Now i can't get sound from the speakers.i've plugged in and unplugged the headphones and nothing will happen. I ran a diagnostic F12 test and i could heard the bleeps from the speakers. I've uninstalled drivers and reinstalled them. Updated all windows 10 updates and windows diagnosis but still nothing so now i'm at my wits end.Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

A:No sound from speakers but headphones work!

naomio_5it told me i had a device plugged in and was highlighting the headphones.
It seems that the computer is falsely sensing that there is a plug in the headphone jack, which could mean that the sensor has failed. See the Headphone Jack FAQ.
Another test you could try is to switch between the Realtek audio driver and the Windows native driver. If the speakers don't work with either driver, that's a good sign of a hardware defect.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked [but SEE NOTE].7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, sometimes you have to restart, sometimes not.[To get back to the Realtek driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]
NOTE: if you have a 2-in-1 model and do not see a "High Definition Audio" option after step 6, then uncheck "Show compatible hardware". Then in step 7, if you see 2 "High Definition Audio" devices, select the 2nd one.If you only have the symptoms with one of the drivers, then the other is at fault. If you have the same symptoms with both audio drivers, then it is very probably not a driver issue.
Contact tech support to have it repaired. Be aware that sometimes Dell will deny support if any media player other than Windows Media Player is on the laptop, so remove any other players before contacting them, and don't tell them if you ever had any other players.

Hello,

I have a VIA HD on board sound card, with a Behringer Xenyx 1202fx mixer. Main out with RCA cables with a 3.5mm y-adapter plugged into the line-in on the sound card. I have Samson C01 Studio condenser Mic connected to the mixer. Since upgrading to Windows 10, I can no longer hear my mic sound through my headphones/speakers. I can still record, and record the sound. I have tried turning on "listen to this device" but that gives a slight lag, and it is very hard to sing when your voice is lagging in your ears. So that is not an option. Is there any way to get the sound back to the headphones from the line in?

Thanks

Try the Windows 7 ? or 8? Driver for the VIA HD you were using, if there isn't a newer one available , the Auto installed one from Windows Update/ in Win10, may not be 100% compatible with your Chip.

I get sound over the headphones no problem when listening to computer files using Windows Media

But if I want to share what i am listening to, say a radio broadcast, over the internal speakers, the file plays but no sound comes out.

The speakers have not been muted, and are set at a mid volume level

it has been this way three weeks now. About three weeks before this happened, I could not get my RealPlayer music files to play.

I wonder if there is something about my computer choosing a default (or maybe I chose one) What would be ideal for me is if this computer would let me alternate between programs - but it seems to prefer that I use one system or another (My old Windows '95 always let me alternate - I could use Windows Media for a half hour, the RealPlaye, then PlayJ.)

Any help appreciated

Is there any resolution for this except for taking the processor to a computer shop for repair???? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

is this a sound driver issue? or is it a coincidence that the jack has blown.

It might be so that the computers jack is too large for the headphones, so it doesn't recognize it. Jacks and ports wear over time.

I know some basics about computers but not enough to troubleshoot or fix this problem on my own.

Just recently I noticed my headphones' sound cutting out and coming back in (sound for a few seconds and silence for a few minutes). This problem hasn't gone away even after switching to my speakers. This hasn't happened before with the headphones or the speakers so I think it has to do with my soundcard.

I have no idea what is needed to troubleshoot, please tell me to add onto this:

Motherboard: Biostar TF 570 SLI
Sound Card: It's built into the motherboard
OS: Windows XP Professional x64 service pack 2
Device manager sound options is attached in a jpeg.

Hello,

I have a laptop - Asus GL551JW-DS71.

My speakers work fine but when I plug in my headphones, I can't hear any sound from the headphones. The headphones do work as I use them for my desktop.

I have tried updating the sound drivers from the device manager.
I have tried removing the drivers and redownloading the audio drivers from Acers website.
I have tried 'installing' audio driver with the default windows 10 audio driver instead of the realtek one.
I have tried adjusting the sample rate in the advanced properties tab.

What can I do to get sound working in my headphones again and not just the speakers.

A:No sound from headphones but speakers work.

Hi, what sort of headphones are they? Plain ordinary analogue.. USB..?
Do they require a driver? If so, is it installed ok?

There are several threads about headphone issues on this forum, so suggest you also try searching the forum for 'headphones'. May give you a clue.

Hello,
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T510 with Windows 7 and have noticed the sound when using headphones it quite low. The same headphones playing the same sound on an older computer turned up all the way is extremely loud, but on this one, you can sometimes barely hear it. Even when using desktop speakers, turned up all the way, playing something in VLC media player with that sound up 400%, it is still sometimes hard to hear, and pretty much any video online, which I can't turn up to 400%, is too low to hear very well. Is this an issue with the sound card? Is there any way to amplify it? Thanks!

Have you tried enabling the "Loudness Equalization" in Windows 7 ?

You can find this setting in the control panel.
Control Panel -> Hardware Sound - >Sound - > Speakers

My computer is Vista x64
Mobo: Asus P5NT-Deluxe
CPU:Intel Q9450 (according to CPU-Z that is, I thought it was Q9400)
Ram:4GB Corsair 800mz DDR2
Video Card:NVidea Geforce 9800GT
Not like any of that matters...

I have a set of Creative P580 5.1 speakers that work wonderfully. However I also want to play my music/games/other applications with my headphones in at times and my problem is that certain audio tracks are not working. For example I will be playing RedAlert3 or DevilMayCry4 and the backing music will play and so will explosions but the voices of the characters/tutorial will not.
I have tried plugging it into the headphone jack in the creative speakers, and unplugging the speakers and trying it in the front and back ports but it makes no difference.
