Preferred Solution: Memory stick data recovery

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have this old sony 128mb memory stick from a digital camera that I dug up. Is there a way to recover some deleted old pictures from it?

What kind of memory is it, and what kind of digital camera?
Some software can recover from flash memory, though I personally don't know what's good or not.

Any data recovery options? and from home and work This morning when I plugged it into the PC it came up like it was installing drivers for the device and said it failed to install almost immediately I thought this was strange so I removed it and reinsterted it This time it said it was installing drivers for a much longer time and finally said it installed drivers I let out a sigh of relief and went to find it in My Computer It wasnt there Oh no In the device manager it is listed as quot USB MEMORY BAR USB Device quot and in devices and printers it is listed as quot SM BC Memory Bar quot The status of the device is listed as quot Needs Troubleshooting quot Also in the device manager under portable devices the quot WPD FileSystem Volume Driver has a warning and the device status is quot This device cannot start Code quot If I pull up the computer management and go to disk management it appears to be listed as Disk Removable and shows all space as unallocated If I go to My Computer it shows up as a removable device as E however eventually the window will time out and tell me to insert a disk into drive E Stupid me did not back up the files from this weekend and I did a considerable amount of work I would like to be able to recover the data if possible Does anyone have any suggestions Thank you for your time

A:1GB memory stick appears corrupt. Any data recovery options?

As for me and recovery programs I purchased a copy of bad copy pro. It's a nice program but im sure you would like a free version.

Just from searching the web I found a program called "MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition"

Here is a download. Thank you for downloading MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition from CNET

I have heard that if windows cant recognize it than chanses of recovery are low. But we can always give it a shot right?

Edit: Hmm I just read somthing that says you can use bad copy pro to fix flash drives without buying it. Edit: Hmm, Not as sure now.

Go ahead and try bad copy pro. I personally have had good experiences with it.

And instructions on how to use it.

Yet another edit: The link says free evaluation version. In my case it would see if it could recover the files first. If it could than you would buy the program and it would save them, if it cant recover them than there is nothing anyone can do.

You don't have to buy it. It will just say weather or not it is recoverable or not. If it is recoverable we will look for a free solution for you.

Sorry i made this so complicated.

I am running a Dell Inspiron with Windows Vista.

A Kingston memory stick I have been using for a couple of months is now giving me trouble.

When I plug it in, it is recognised, and shows up in My Computer, but with no content. When I click on Properties, however, it tell me that I have 2.4Gb in 4,313 files on it.

The drive is also present in Disk Management.

File options are set to "show hidden".

I can also run AV scans on the drive without problem.

Any suggests for what I try next?

A:Cannot Read Data from USB Memory Stick

Just something to "try". Puppy Linux live cd found here: and Getting Started.htm Download Puppy, burn it to a iso, Plug your memory stick in, now boot to Puppy live cd(make sure the cd/dvd rom is first in boot order). See if your memory stick is recognized(it should be on the bottom left of the screen), if it is click on it(one click), see if you can see your files.

Does anyone know how I can recover lost data on a 64 meg memory stick? I was using to back up from my PDA (sony peg SJ20). Somehow the device seemed to go through a major crash. I thought that all was not lost, as I had backed up to the card recently. Sadly, none of the backup files show any more. There are still other files, viewable through MS Gate. I think the back ups are still there because the space used by the files visible on MS gate is much less than the total space listed as being occupied. How can I find out what is still on the card, and more importantly, how can I get it back.

Endless thanks to anyone who can help me.

My memory stick is fairly new, but just decided to die today. Am I at a total loss or are there some tricks for recovery??? Basically it is not physically broken or damaged in any way, but when I plug it in to the USB, the computer won't pick it up and the stick doesn't light up like it used to. Are there any tips or tricks out there??? Thanks!!!

I have an SD card, used in a Camera. I cannot access the data , (photos) that are on it. It seems to be full.

When I try to access the disk, I get "You may need to format the disk before you an use it".

Can anyone suggest / recommend a method of recovering my data?

I've looked at several commercial products but they seem to cost about £20. I only need to retrieve a few photos.

Thank you in advance.

This is not just for recovering photos. I store general data on flash memory, not just photo-related, on various types of media--usb flash, SD Cards, xD cards, CF, etc.

What is the best data recovery for this purpose under $40 -- or do I need to go to more $ to get a really effective program?

Free would be nice; but, usually, there are limitations to the uses of free programs.

I am running Windows XP in a Compaq Presario, with CD reader and CD/DVD burner.
My question: How do I get a DVD(with photos and sound) onto a Flash Memory stick or an SD card??

A:Transfer DVD to Memory Stick or Memory card

Simplest method:

Insert the Disc with photos and sound (close any autorun)
Go to My Computer
Right Click on the CD/DVD drive (with your photos and sound in) and select open
Click on Edit (in Toolbar) then Select all
Click on Edit (in Toolbar again) and select copy

Close the folder

Insert your Flash Memory stick and select Open folder to view the files
Click on Edit (in Toolbar again) and select paste

All done Copy and paste (some say I'm good at this !)

Completely new to this so apologies if barking up the wrong tree .... !

Rather than buying a 32 gb memory stick to upload some important jpg pictures into for safety's sake, I'm wondering if it's possible to upload and store them in a spare and unused 32gb memory card that I've got lying around instead ? Equally if it's then possible to download them safely later on ?

A:Possible to save to a memory card rather than a memory stick ?

Short answer is Yes. An SD card is very similar to a flash drive as far as the technology goes and can be used like an SD card for storing files. I would format it Fat32. And you can download (Copy) the files from the card at any time.

A:USB stick shows no data!

go the the "USB stick" Manufacturer's Website and see if they have a recovery tool for you to download. (if you cant figure that out then just post the manufacturer name and the model of your device.)
be aware that this may wipe the data, if you do not have another copy of this data elsewhere then you may have learned the hard way why backups are important, and also how USB Solid State Disk Drives are not a safe place to keep things, they're there mainly for transfering between unconnected computers.

good luck

Hi everone this may be in the wrong section
I have saved my XP info to a usb memory stick, now I have loaded windows 7, how do I retreive my XP info.I am using MS easy transfer tool to do this, but the computer says it cannot open the file, what is the next move please if anyone can help

A:download data from usb stick

Using EasyTransfer is not a good idea as it can result in data loss and doesn't always work.

It's much easier to just drag your files to the stick, then sort them into the User folders in Win7 explorer.

For example, from XP you'd open Documents folder, highlight the actual Documents and drag them to the Documents link in left-hand Explorer bar, holding the left click until it expands and confirms destination being copied into, using hypertext.

Then open your Pictures and do the same with them, any Music, Favorites, etc.

If your data is already zipped up into WET and not still available to be simply copied onto the stick and transferred manually, follow this guide to import them now into Win7: Migrate XP to Windows 7 with Easy Transfer and a USB Drive

Hello, hope I have put this on the right board. First time on here and I am reading thru the books Windows 8 in easy steps and easy windows 8 as a guide. I want to back up Windows 8 but in neither book do they say that you can use a USB stick or CDs only an external hard drive or a network. I've got an external hard drive that backs up my desktop (XP) can I use this as well for Windows 8 or should I just get another external hard drive solely for Windows 8 or can I use the USB Stick 32gb that I already have?

A:Can I back up data with a USB stick 32gb?

Speaking of built-in tools:
File history - yes
Legacy backup - no

Note that you can't use both, as they are mutually exclusive by design.

32GB may not be enough for file history, if you have a lot of files and update them often, because files aren't compressed. I'd say an external hard drive is a better option.

I reset my laptop to factory settings by using a USB stick which I prepared before.
But some days ago before recovery I used that USB for storing some of my files and I didn't delete them. I mean I had copied some personal folders into the recovery USB stick before and didn't delete them and did a PC reset with that USB.

The installation was ok. I'm sometimes having issues such as screen is freezing ect. This is a new laptop and many driver issues ect.
I'm not sure if these are related to extra folders in recovery USB.

My question is, when performing a recovery from USB or DVD; if there are some other unrelated files or folders in that media(USB or DVD) does it matter?

No it does not matter.. Unless you over-wrote on existing file in an existing recover folder

Well it seems you have multiple problems, possibly not related to the fitness of either device. If you can, try your optical in another computer and see if works.

As a new member it's always a good idea to post all your computers specs in your profile, so folks don't have to ask a bunch of questions to help in the diagnosis. What OS, what country, brand/model number of opticals and MOBO. Service packs etc.

There is really no way to run MemTest wrong and yes, there should be no errors whatsoever.

You can either take the memory back to where you bought it or RMA it directly to Kingston. You can find the RMA form on under support.

No ideas. I've often transferred WinZip via USB drive-never had any problem. Are you sure you're saving the downloaded file to the USB drive-if you try copying your installed version of WinZip you probably won't get it all. If it shows up under 'My Computer' when you insert it into your card reader, you should be able to right-click on it, and select 'Format' to completely wipe the card clean.

If 'Format' it doesn't appear in the right-click menu, click on 'Properties' and see if it's in there.

I have a USB1.1 memory stick that is a few years old. It has worked faithfully up until now. Yesterday when I insert it into a USB port, the computer (XP) does not detect it. There is no error message, there is no yellow question mark in the Device Manager. It does not appear on in My Computer, it doesn't work on another computer (Vista) and I have another USB Memory stick that does work with the computer so I am guessing that there is problem with the older stick.

Is there anything I can do to access the data on the stick and back it up before I replace it?

Just a casual question. I have three memory sticks, equal in capacity, which are used for transmitting files across to other computer and daily backups. The computer has a hard disk with no partitions and the usual CD/DVD-ROM drive.

Why, when I insert two of the memory sticks are they each recognised as the E drive, whilst the third memory stick is always recognised as the F drive. The memory sticks are used one at a time.

A:Memory stick

Memory modules, if the correct size, and type, should work out of the box.
Be sure you have the right stuff by going to and entering your computer brand and model, or the motherboard brand and model... for a list of what should work.
Then if you install it correctly so that it is firmly seated, the motherboard BIOS and Windows should detect it and accept it automatically.

Long story short: My new computer that had Vista on it originally crashed two weeks ago. I downgraded to XP. Now the internet doesn't work. My Network Drivers are missing.

So I hooked up my old computer (Windows ME) I upgraded it to XP. I got onto the HP website and the tech sent me 3 drivers: chipset, sound, and modem.

The CD burner on the old computer won't work. So I couldn't burn the drivers onto a cd and transfer.

I bought a USB Memory Stick. The computer recognized it, installed it. But it's not under 'My Computer'.

I went into Admin Tools and tried adding a new drive. It wouldn't work/I may not have done it right.

Will this tactic work?
If I transfer all my harddrive to a memory stick (the size is 4 Gigabytes) can I then plug it into a PC with Norton installed and scan it that way?
I ask because I cannot scan my pc at the moment because a virus(or a trojan or I know not what) is effectively blocking my internet access .
Again would Norton Antivirus be up to the task as someone (my ISP) said they thought it might be a trojan to be redirecting my outgoing traffic in the way that it is.

What is the difference between a USB flash drive and a USB pen drive? There is a difference in price but that is all i can work out at the moment. Please can you help.

A:Memory stick

Hi helenb102,

Welcome to TSG!

According to when I searched for usb flash drive, a USB flash drive and USB pen drive are one and the same:
Known By Many Names

Also known as a "flash drive," "pen drive," "keychain drive," "key drive," "USB key," "USB stick" and "memory key," ...

I already knew that, but wondered if indeed there actually was some difference - so, none!

They are sold with or without bootable software (Windows) depending on mfg. I have bought 512kb, 2GB and 4GB USB flash drives. SanDisk cruzer (512KB, 2GB, 4GB) comes with Windows compatible FAT16 (I think) bootable software. On a PNY Technologies (2GB) USB flash drive which does not come with any bootable software, I partitioned and laid in a compatible file system for Linux Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon which has the property (now) of persistent storage, so that any changes I install to it are not lost after I boot it up and install the changes - i.e. between reboots from it onto my desktop from it.

A:Minitool Power Data Recovery or Runtime Get Data Back, which

Both are good programs and i would recommend purchasing both ( if you can afford ). Both has it's own pros and cons.
"GetDataBack" is good at virtual reconstruction of damage/unrecognizable file systems but i personally found it weak at recovering image files. It recovers images but most of them seems to be corrupted in my testings. Also you need to purchase seperate versions for FAT and NTFS ( GetDataBack simple is garbage ).

On the other hand, "Power data Recovery" works with both FAT and NTFS and it is better at recovering image files. Another proven tools is "R-Studio" which has quiet good reputation among DR professionals. It's user interface is not newbie friendly but has lot's of options which no other tools offers.

Update: I'm letting go of this idea. I did manage to finally muddle through and performed a Clean install, which left me with having to download from Acer, Ethernet and wireless drivers onto my desktop PC then transfer to the laptop. All seems well!

A:Are the 4 Recovery Disk In ISO format, can they run from USB stick?

This almost never works unless you make the Recovery media in USB format to begin with. For example you can write the Recovery disk ISO to stick using UltraISO Software To Create Bootable USB Flash Drive but it only works rarely. If it does however for the first disk, then you can write each subsequent disk as it is requested in the same way and it should complete.

What is the problem with the disks not being recognized? Sometimes what works is booting the Win7 DVD or REpair CD to wipe the HD first from its Command Line with Diskpart Clean Command.

Since a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 is much superior install, perhaps we could help you resolve any issues you have with it since it is a specialty of these forums where we have helped countless thousands get perfect Clean Reinstalls.

My hard drive (XP) is so full the message pops up constantly, the cause seems to be lots of photos, iTunes and especially MS Office taking up space.
I need to transfer data or programs especialy MS Office to an 8Gb stick then remove them from the hard drive to free up space.
I no longer have teenagers at home to do this sort of thing and have very little computer knowledge myself.
All the obvious things have been done ie disc cleanup etc. there is just too much stuff stored, there is not enough space left to defragment.

A:Hard Drive Full - How do I move data to USB stick?

You cannot move programs such as MS Office to Flash drive because the program associated with data in the Registry and will be unusable after moved them.
But if you want to move photo or Documents or anything, go to search > All files and folders > All Hard Drives > in search box type in " *.[extension] " without quotes when [extension] mean extension of the files, example of use is :

this will search for all png pictures and word documents found on your drives. Note that extensions are separate with comma sign.
After you find your file, press Ctrl + A then Ctrl + X and go to your flash drive then press Ctrl + V.
Thank you.

That would possibly be down to the file type that the different programs can handle, look at the file and see what is on the end of the file name for files that play in each program, if the same then they should play in either program.

A:USB Memory Stick Not Visible

As far as I know, Windows has a maximum drive count of 26 (the # of letters in the alphabet). I believe this is why your USB Device isn't showing up when you connect it. If my count is correct, when connecting this device you already have 26 devices connected. As a workaround, you could simply make sure that you never connect all 27 devices at the same time, but I'd suggest that you merge a few of your partitions instead.

First, cut down your number of devices by a few so that you're not using all of the letters in the alphabet.

Next, I suggest that you manually assign drive letters to those devices so that they will connect properly at the same time. Here's how to do so:

Open the Computer Management program:
Start > Search for "Computer Management" > Enter

Click on the Disk Management option under Storage

Right click on the device(s) that are using the same drive letters and assign them to a new drive letter that isn't in use.

Hey guys, I upgraded my wife's PC a short while ago with a mobo/cpu/ram bundle. The ram I got was supposed to be PC2700. When I ran aide32pe last night to look at the ram type/speed it showed up in that program as PC3200. I pulled the cover off of thing just a few minutes ago and pulled out the stick of ram to look at it and here is what I could identify on it:

32X64 DDR266 OSLO002-3918528 CH810300 32X64dBOc8nMOS266 389002841101003bnm

Most of that doesn't make sense to me, but I would swear that the stickers on this stick of ram say it's PC2100 ram (DDR266). How can I know if the stickers are wrong or aide32pe is wrong? Is there any way to know? Maybe use another program like SiSandra to see what it says? Thanks for your help.

A USB pen-drive, if working properly, should register with Windows almost instantaneously with no discernable delay in response. The fact that yours is taking a while to respond is a sure sign that it's faulty and needs replacing. It's mainly for this reason that you should never use a pen-drive for backup purposes - they are too volatile & unreliable.

A:Memory stick storage

(I'm assuming that the 'memory stick' is not write-protected, because the available space was decreased after "the event")

Alright, I think I might've got the answer. But by 'memory stick' I presume that you mean either a USB-based flashdrive/thumbdrive, or a memory card like a Compact Flash card or a SD-card.

Because: my explanation will alter drastically if you mean that you actually tried storing a non-volatile piece of software on a volatile piece of hardware like a DDR RAM memory stick via 'pin modulation' etc.

Three explanations then, I'm assuming that you are using Windows. The explanation will be the same for most Macintosh and most Linux OS's (but not all).
"1." if you meant USB-drive instead of memory stick.
"2." if you meant memory card instead of memory stick.
"3." if you meant 'memory stick' as in RAM, Then my hat is off to you, sir.

1. You inserted a USB-drive, stored a file on it, removed it. Now the file is gone, but the space is occupied. How come?

Easy explanation:
Are you familiar with "Safely Remove Hardware"?

IF NOT: When you remove a USB-drive from the computer, you must (oftenmost) perform a 'Safe Removal'. If you look downright on your system tray when a USB-drive is inserted, you'll see a green arrow thingy called 'Safe Hardware Removal' or something like that. You will have to choose your USB-drive from a dropdown list when right-clicking this icon, in order to insure that your data stays on the disk when you remove it. A message will then pop up saying "It is now safe to remove your drive".

Take a look at this!

Are you sure you performed it? If you did, keep me posted!

More advanced explanation:
You see, when You wrote a file onto the memory, the cells inside the memory were charged in accordance with the data which you stored on the device. But keep in mind that the "name" of the file (more like the 'identity' of the file) is stored in a completely different way (in a volatile, non-permanent way) in order to enable a "possible" write of multiple files onto the device.

IF the device is removed without performing this "Safe Removal", then the data will stay intact, but the file's ID will end up as de-charged anti-neutrinos somewhere on the other side of cosmos. In other words: the PC will be un-able to identify the file, even though the data is there, and even though the data is occupying the total storage available.

You have now created something simply (and inaccurately) referred to as "Mémoire mort". Un-usable storage space, until reanimated using third-party software. Your file is there, but un-identifiable.

2. You inserted a memory card, stored a file on it, removed it. Now the file is gone, but the space is occupied. How come?

If you used an older OS like XP, this is something that happens from time to time as XP was not really designed with memory cards in mind (was it a kernel not being open enough? Never mind...).

If you simply removed the memory card as expected, but still cannot see the file, then you have not only lost the file's identity, but also the entire file.

Look at the advanced explanation on "1." -- but now instead of just the ID being stored in a completely different way, the entire file is stored in a volatile state. Without the 'Safe Removal' (which lacked serious support in XP for memory cards), the entire file is not written onto the memory chip/card. It also dissipates into anti-neutrinos unless I'm mistaken. BUT: the storage space which the file was used to 'inhabit', was 'reserved' for the file, and thus it was awaiting the file which didn't came = "Mé... Read more

I have an old Dell Dimension 4700. I'm running XP pro with a Pentium 4. I know, dark ages. It has two 256 K memory sticks in it currently. I was looking to replace them with two 512K chips but found that the ones I bought did not fit. So I put the 256K sticks back in but now the machine only recognizes one of them. It is not giving me any error messages either on boot or in the Event Viewer. I switched them around to various combinations in the four available slots, but no luck. Only showing 256K memory. Neither appears to be damages.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
