Preferred Solution: WD Raptor died, need data recovery

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I want to recover if possible, not only my emails, documents, videos, and photos. I also want to recover my browser bookmarks, tabs, and history, and my programs, particularly some shareware I have.

I have had a firm in California recommended to me.

My WD Raptor HD has my OS on it. It won't boot up, appears to be seriously hosed. I installed the OS on my second HD, made it the boot drive. While both OS show up in the bios the crashed drive does not show up when I boot up in the other HD. Is there any software I can get to recover the data from the crashed drive? My OS is Windows 7.

I have a Dell laptop and was running XP Pro when I started having problems (this computer has been running perfectly for two years, I guess I was due). It is missing a .dll file (hal.dll) and will not load the OS, not even in safe mode. I ran the recovery console and tried "bootcfg /rebuild" and recieved a message that the rebuild was not successful, and should run chkdsk. I did this and recieved and message that there were unrecoverable errors. Basically, it sounds like I am screwed. My problem now is this: I haven't backed up in a while (my bad, I know) and there are some files I would like to recover. Can someone recommend a third-party software for me, or suggest a course of action? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

My toshiba harddrive died after a few months of receiving it. I got it for Christmas last year. The original harddrive died in June and was replaced with a new one within two weeks. In September the new harddrive crashed and died. I took it to a local shop to get the data, but they were unable to get the data.

I really need this data back. It has a lot of important files. What can I do to get the data?

A:My Toshbia Harddrive died. How can I get the data back?

That's really bad luck!
Assuming the drive is still in the computer and will spin up you could try booting to a live linux CD. A good free one would be puppy linux.
Get a friend to download it and burn to a CD. Boot your laptop from the CD and see if you can browse to the "dead" HDD and pull files off to an external USB HDD.
There are businesses that recover data but I think it is an expensive service.

Hi,

Before you write more data or attempt to read data from the drive through Windows, I would suggest using a Live CD like SysRescueCD to boot from and access the HDD.

I don't know where this thread properly belongs -- but I suspect the question may be too esoteric for most here.

Since it involves data recovery from a hard drive I'm going to move it to Hardware, I think "all other software" is not likely to have anyone with this type of experience.

A:Minitool Power Data Recovery or Runtime Get Data Back, which

Hi

Both are good programs and i would recommend purchasing both ( if you can afford ). Both has it's own pros and cons.
"GetDataBack" is good at virtual reconstruction of damage/unrecognizable file systems but i personally found it weak at recovering image files. It recovers images but most of them seems to be corrupted in my testings. Also you need to purchase seperate versions for FAT and NTFS ( GetDataBack simple is garbage ).

On the other hand, "Power data Recovery" works with both FAT and NTFS and it is better at recovering image files. Another proven tools is "R-Studio" which has quiet good reputation among DR professionals. It's user interface is not newbie friendly but has lot's of options which no other tools offers.

A:Acer-Aspire V3 laptop hard-drive died, no recovery disk

The Windows 8 key is embedded in the BIOS, there is no COA sticker.

I believe you will have to wait for the recovery disk if you want Windows 8 as you will not be able to download a Windows 8 ISO without a retail key. Microsoft really screwed this up and has made no attempts to fix it.

You can do a clean install of a Windows 7 upgrade disc, see here: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version - Windows 7 Help Forums

I booted up my Win 7 computer today and ChkDsk said my Ex HDD may have been corrupted and proceeded to delete some files. Those were some very important files - how can I get them back? (Video and Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 files)

I prefer free methods on this - I know I can buy software to do this, but I currently don't have the money. Or a very cheap method, if nothing else.

It's ironic that today was the day I was going to back up this drive.

Please help!

You will most likely need to restore those files from a backup. But don't do anything until you've made sure the virus is gone. Don't want to reinfect the files.

Hi,

I have a larged data drive that failed a disk check. It stalls when starting stage two (I belive that is the verification of indexing). I have been able to back-up all of the folders except for a large folder of raw video. The PC locks up when I attempt to access/copy this folder (it appears to be part of the problem). I want to make an attempt to recover this data before reformatting the drive.

The check disk fails both at start up or if I run from the desktop both in regular and safe mode. Does anyone have tips for recoverying this data?

A:Data Recovery of data drive

You could try using a 98 boot disk and then run ntfsdos from there to access the ntfs partitions. Then try an xcopy of that file to another drive.

Another method could be to use Winrar to create a multipart archive and store it on another drive. This might chunk it up enuff.

Or boot to recovery console from the CD and then run chkdsk /r which marks any sectors that are corrupt as bad so they will not be used again, even after format. All take some time, but they are readily availalble fixes.

Alternatively, you could create an image of the drive and save that somewhere else, then run your drive manufacturers disk utility to check integrity of the disk.

Hope this helps

A:Recommend Data Recovery Company not Data Software Company

Best Data Recovery Company

I have visited many data recovery websites and evaluated their product.

But my experience with one data recovery is almost excellent.

Nucleus Data Recovery, the leading data recovery company having biggest range of professional data recovery software.

Their support is also excellent you drop a email for any help they will respond within 5 minutes.

To recover your data try Kernel Recovery for FAT+NTFS.

The DEMO allows you to preview the recoverable contents and you can check whether the file is recovered correctly or not by double clicking on it.

I tried to update my USB drivers on my old computer running XP Pro and royally jacked it up- BSOD and unable to recover using safe mode, or any other recovery disk etc. That's not so much my problem, I have since started using a newer computer (Gateway 825 GM running XP Pro) and recently bought a HDD Enclosure so I can recover the data on my old HDD.

I have got the old HDD working through the external adapter but I'm unable to access certain directories due to the security settings I had on my old computer user profile. Is there any way to access the secure directories on the old HDD now? I'm logged in to the new computer under a user profile with administrator privileges already.

I'd really like to get the data in these directories because there are a lot of pictures of a recently deceased loved one in there.

A:Data recovery

It's a permissions issue. You'll need to take Ownership of the folders and sub-folders in order to access them. In XP Pro, you can access the "Security" tab in "Properties" of the folder(s) in question, but in XP Home, you can only access the "Security" tab in Safe Mode.

Remove the name of the old Owner, and let Administrator be the new Owner, and apply the settings to all sub-folders.

Things aren't progressing well with my dead hard drive, so I wondered if - worst case - anyone has data recovery places that they'd recommend, preferably in New York City.

:dead:

A:Data recovery in NYC?

The average cost really begins at $450 despite their "free estimates" or $279 flat fee claims. Is your damage at that value? If the plates are cracked or the magnetic material peeled off, or the bearings welded together, it still costs you $450 for no data rescued.
We recommend a place in Ontario, Canada as they best you can find.
Have you tried installing the drive in a USB enclosure that has its own power supply to see what you can see, or if the drive turns?

Some of these may not still be in business. Some data here is from my two-year old book, but these were good when last used.

Well it all started when I tried installing an old CD drive onto my system. I then got the error message "missing or corrupt hal.dll file". One thing led to another and what I thought was a REPAIR install of Windows XP, actually erased my whole hard drive leaving only a partially completed Windows subdirectory.

I plugged the hard drive into another computer as a secondary drive and all it's showing is just that Windows subdirectory. I've tried a data recovery program, but it is not showing anything on the hard drive.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
My life is on this hard drive and I haven't done any recent backups (including an important project I've been working on)

Thanks,
Leee

Hello guys.
This morning I performed a routine re-installation of Windows XP on my sister's laptop to start off fresh. But this time I screwed up big time!
During the installation process, at the screen where it asks you whether to format the drive. Instead of choosing 'Leave the current drive intact (no changes)', I messed up in chose 'Format the drive using the NTFS filesystem (Quick)'. As a result all files on the C drive was wiped out including the files in the My Documents, among them were some very important documents relating to my sister's work.
So please, does anybody know if I can recover those files? Or they are lost forever?

A:Need help with data recovery

you say you chose the quick format...well, if your lucky all hope is not lost. There is a free data recovery software i can recommend that should be able to recover most of the data as long as you don't fill up the hard-drive with anything else until it finishes recovering the files...

here's the download page

here's the description

here's the disclaimer

hope this helps...and please be patient, it takes a bit of time to scan your hard-drive...

Hello there people, any ideas on the best Data Recovery Software, hopefully easy to use  also, is there any software around that the equivilant of VLC for Photos, I mean software that'll open anything

A:Data Recovery

IMO...the "best" data recovery software I have used...is a paid version of Get Data Back - NTFS.  But...I have a small sample size, since I've only had to use such software less than 5 times in my 19 years of playing with computers.  So..."best" really doesn't mean much when you are speaking to me...whatever works for a given user is often considered "the best" by said member.  It's probably NOT the best, since "the best" recovery would probably be done by a professional entity and would cost more than most of us are willing to spend.

But I can suggest a number of options.

My question is that was there any possibilities that the software might recovered some files from my internal drive(which I have not selected) simultaneously?

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

You mean your personal drive?

Chances are low, but always a possibility. If you told it to recover a certain drive/partition, then it should just recover that drive.

so this drive which has data on it will not run. I have a bytecc usb 2.0 drive mate

that I plugged the drive into and I would not spin up.

now oddly, the bytecc usb 2.0 drive mate used to have a red light indicating power and a green light indicating connection. now the red light does not work, however I tried another drive and it spins and was recognized by the bytecc usb 2.0 drive mate.

so... assuming its only the LED red light that burnt out on the bytecc usb 2.0 drive mate then I assume its the drive motor itself.

SO...

can I open the drive,

take out the disk and put that disk in another drive which I know works in order to read the info on the dead disk? will that work or am I going to encounter more problems?

Hi,

Just wondering if you guys could give me advice please.

Ironically my backup hard drive appears to have given up the ghost & i was wondering if retrieving my date is possible.
It is actually a network drive, Iomega 1tb, it became undiscovered so i removed the Seagate Barracuda from it's case & tried it in a sata drive dock. It runs quietly and sounds like it is spinning but doesn't show in my computer.
It shows as disk 6 in disk management as well as online & healthy but will not initialize, so no drive letter.

Am i wasting my time?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I was looking for suggestions for Data Recovery Software to recover data from a hard drive that looks to have been reformatted. I was considering using R-Studio or RecoverMyFiles, but was wondering if anyone had suggestions on others or experiences using either of these. Any suggestions or advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Im not sure if this really belongs here, but any way..

I had to format a computer, and installed Windows again...but first I had to copy the files over..well, I overlooked the desktop and didnt copy those files..

Is there any software out there that will recover these files even after a format has been done? Im willing to pay, but Im not willing to pay to send it to a company to do it. I've tried with Smart File Recovery, but they put each file as 1,492kb. I really need to get these excel and word docs back. They are the courts lol.

Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

An extremely great program to recover files that were deleted. The program is so small you can run it from a floppy disk. You could take it anywhere and access the program on any machine????????????? The program is free and it works like a dream. It is called Restoration 2.5.14. Thanks to Brian Kato for his great work. The website is located at http://hccweb1.bai.ne.jp/~hcj58401/

Good Luck!

I have a problem. I have to add computers to a domain at work that are currently part of a workgroup. My first computer went well. When I did the second PC I may have copied the new profile into the old one instead of the other way around. Now I can not find any data that used to be in the my documents folder from the old profile. Is there a way to recover lost data? Since I didn't technically delete the old profile I was hoping it was still on the hard drive somewhere. Thanks.

A:Data Recovery

You could try using a program like: http://www.officerecovery.com/freeundelete/

Which is free undelete, because of the way windows "deletes" files even when having deleted you can recover the files, If you over-wrote the profiles etc, then this may/may not be possible but give it a go and post back with your results...

Cheers,
Jamey

Security Permission issue http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/security/permissions.mspx

Right click the folder you want to open and choose Properties>Security. Make sure their is a group named "Everyone". If not click Add>Advanced>"Find Now" and choose everyone. Click OK and you should no longer get those nasty Access Denied messages. (refer to the above link to allow specifically your user account to access the old Hard Drive folders)

Note: in Windows Xp Home, the "Security" menu will not show. Just start your computer in Safe Mode (continuously press F8 function key on computer Startup then select Safe Mode)
Also confirm that you are running an Administrator privlidged account. (Check Users in Control Panel)

Here's my situation.

Recently my hdd would stop windows boot up and give me an error code and there was no fix you unless reformat it. So I went ahead and pulled the harddrive out and got an eSATA usb adapter and plugged it in to another computer. Problem is power wasn't being pulled (through the wall obviously) and I couldn't get the hdd running for the computer to recognize it. I tried another hdd to test the cable and it worked fine.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to get my data back. I don't want to spend a fortune.

Hi fenix9158,

Welcome to SevenForums.

Can you please clarify

1. Which is "your HDD"? If it is an external HDD the make and model and also how it was connected to the PC, esata/usb ? ( I have atleast five or six HDDs, two inside my PC, the rest externals outside and all are "my HDDs" )

2. If it was preventing Windows from booting, how did you get the error message that it needs to be formatted?

3. Is your ASUS PC/Desktop fully functional?

about a year ago i backed up all my family pictures onto a CD using Nero Burning ROM. As i remember it an error came up just as the disc was finishing (ive had this happen a few times over the years of using Nero Burning ROM and never thought anything of it; the data/music etc. that i put on the disc was always fine).
However, i recently had a hard drive fail and ive lost all my family pictures and when i try to get them from the backup disc my entire computer freezes until i eject the CD. i can open explorer and see the folders on the disc (e.g. Mum + Dad, Holiday 1995) but its only when i click on them to view the pictures inside that the computer freezes.

Is there anyway i can get my incredibly important (to me personally) back??

When you startup through the boot menu, or when you select the corrupted install as your operating system, does it give you the same error/message every time?

I just used O&O's Disk Recovery 6, trying to reover from files from a drive that I had repartitioned. It works modestly well, as far as actually recovering the files, once you sort through all of the possible files that it finds, but like in the case at hand, there are over 300,000 files, and the version that I use only lets me recover 1000 at a time. I know that they have a newer version without this limit, but even so it would still require endless rummaging to find exactly what you want, because it scans the entire drive, without letting one set a search zone, and it labels all of the files with it own numbering system, rather than the files original identity.

This makes me wonder if there is a recovery program available that would be easier to use?

Try Zero Assumption Recovery (ZAR). I have it on one of my XP machines. It's not free (except the photo recovery) but you can use it is as a trial and test. It used to have a three or four folder trial limit but I think that has been increased. Give it try. The link below is to the tutorials page of ZAR. It shows what's available.

A:Data Recovery

Hello and Welcome to TSF

This problem occurs on disks that do not contain a media descriptor byte in the BIOS parameter block (BPB) of the boot sector. Some older preformatted floppy disks do not contain a media descriptor byte. Older product disks may also not have the media descriptor byte. You might try the workaround in the below link. Hopefully you had your data backed up elsewhere also.

Is anyone aware of a data recovery programe l may be able to use to recover music from a damaged mp3 player.
The player will not operate because of moisture damage but l would be very keen to recover about 5Gb of the music it has stored.

A:Data Recovery

i dont own a mp3 player but they can be plugged into the computer i know that, when you plug them in does windows recognize the device as a drive? and allow you to search threw the files by going to lets say my computer > mp3 player > music??? if so you might be able to get away with using a recovery program such as recover my files (the best one on the market that i have seen takes a while to run gets alota stuff back... just set it to only search for mp3s... uncheck all otehrs or you can try a freeware tool there out there just not as good, if nothing else you should be able to play parts of the songs that were deleted if there not too corrupt & or you could get the old file name which can help you re download the files if the issue is more that you couldnt rember all 1000 file names you had on there, let me know how it turns out

Hi all,

So my laptop died [I do know a dead one when I see one] during a writing session. Totally dead. 2 uninterrupted hours of stream-of-consciousness with background saves every 5 minutes so I guessed I lost 5 minutes worth, max.

How wrong am I? My problem is that the old days seem to be gone - I take the drive out, put it into other machines/external boxes and try ALL my old tricks.

No data. Zip.

All help/suggestions greatly appreciated.

Spinrite? Does the hard drive spin up at all?

Pro and Con arguments ref. condensation (internal) and putting it in a fridge/freezer. I suppose with progressive temperature reduction and dessicants you could reduce the risk and gain the chance of some recovery.

It all depends on the value of the data vs the effort (and expense with commercial data recovery) you wish to expend.

Somewhat disconcerting that both the laptop and drive are dead- suggests significant power problem.

i have posted here before as mom2techsupport but lost my password. so, hello everybody --and i have a question--

i hope someone can help here--i am attempting to recover some pictures of a harddrive. it's a situation i have never run into before and i am completely lost--

drive spins, can hear it.

windows and linux both see a drive, but don't see anything in it. couldn't select repair disk.

the most information i got was from active boot. the drive is 20gigs but was formatted into five partitions. one is 90mb, three are 1 gig each.

and now the weird part--that first partition is formatted in fat12.

any ideas?

for the record, i don't care about the drive itself, my hope is to retrieve pictures for the family that owned it.

Here's a few different tools to try to attempt partition repair and/or partiition data recovery. People have reported good results when using the tools but the result (and certainly quaility of the result) may vary by situation.

Gparted and TestDisk (freeware)
Partition Doctor (free to try, see what it finds, subscription required to apply any fixes
Active File Recovery (free to try, free version limits recovery to files 64KB or less.

For paid software tools, i'd say i've seen more feedback on Partition Doctor. It also appears it knows hot to try and "fix" things in a number of different ways

Hello,

my computer has gone away last year and I recovered its hard disk with all my data.

I bought a Serial ATA 2.5 external enclosure in order to read and recover the data, but the problem is that when I used my old PC I put a password for entering in my account, and now with the new PC every time I read my old hard disk it appears a message (attached) saying that I have not the authorisation to enter in the files, and it does not let me put the password.

For your info in the old PC I used windows vista.

I always thought that the best way to secure files is to put it on a CD or DVD because it would be there safely for a lifetime, keeping in mind that you should protect it from scratches or any form of physical damage to the CD. Just this morning I came across with an article saying that older CDs or DVDs will eventually have reading problems until the files are completely unrecoverable. It did not totally changed my way of thinking but somehow put a doubt on it. If this is true then we should recover the files on those media (CD/DVD) and transfer it into a new one. The same article also gave an overview on a couple of software to aid in recovery. Here's the link to that article:http://www.ghacks.net/2010/09/20/cd-dvd-data-recovery-software-overview/I hope that you would find this helpful.

A:CD DVD Data Recovery

Real-life (not accelerated aging) tests have revealed that some CD-Rs degrade quickly even if stored normally. The quality of a CD-R disc has a large and direct influence on longevity?low quality discs should not be expected to last very long. According to research conducted by J. Perdereau, CD-Rs are expected to have an average life expectancy of 10 years.Branding isn't a reliable guide to quality, because many brands (major as well as no name) do not manufacture their own discs. Instead they are sourced from different manufacturers of varying quality. For best results, the actual manufacturer and material components of each batch of discs should be verified. An example of a CD-R burned in 2000 showing dye degradation in 2008. Part of the data on it has been lost.Burned CD-Rs suffer from material degradation, just like most writable media. CD-R media have an internal layer of dye used to store data. In a CD-RW disc, the recording layer is made of an alloy of silver and other metals?indium, antimony, and tellurium. In CD-R media, the dye itself can degrade, causing data to become unreadable. As well as degradation of the dye, failure of a CD-R can be due to the reflective surface. While silver is less expensive and more widely used, it is more prone to oxidation resulting in a non-reflecting surface. Gold on the other hand, although more expensive and no longer widely used, is an inactive material, so gold-based CD-Rs do not suffer from this problem. - WikiSo as long you use "good quality" media, you're set for around 10 years.

I have a hard disk here that died right in front of me. We had identified some bad surface area and were in process of copying the data to backup in preparation for replacing it.

We restarted the computer and it came up with "Missing Operating System". The boot sector seems to be gone along with the partition table. I've run Active Partition Recovery to no avail. I'm sure that if I were skilled at direct disk editing, I could correct the problem well enough to recover something; but, I have no expertise there.

Utilities that run under Windows probably won't help as the data is in an area that is seen by Windows as "unallocated space".

What utilities are there that might help?

Hi All

Dont know if this thread is in the right forum but here goes ...

What is wrong with my HDD? It displays all the files and folders on the drive but only some files have filesizes and the rest of the files haves filesizes that are equal to zero.
I can copy files to the drive and read files from the drive. The HDD is NTFS done through windows.

I think my HDD is ... BROKEN but I cannot say die! To many valuable files on the drive as you all can imagine.

How do I fix or recover the files?

Thanks in advance

Do you mean the data recovery software shows this, or Windows shows this?

Anyway please try this:

Manual steps to run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer

Open My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
Click Properties, and then click Tools.
Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed
Use one of the following procedures:

? To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start.
? To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start. (tick)
? To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box.

Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:

The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?Click to expand...

Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

Wait until Chkdsk finishes Checking / Repairing any faults
Windows will then either restart your computer or continue loading Normally.

Hi All,

I just realized that I neglected to back up some data after replacing windows vista with XP pro. Is there any way that I might recover it?

I formatted the entire hard drive with the "quick format" option during installation. That means that my old data was not completely erased, right?

In the meantime, I`m not adding any extra data to the hard drive, for fear of overwriting potentially retrievable deleted files.

Thanks for your time!
