I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The PCIe x16 slot is for GPUs, it is the highest bandwidth of them all. I can explain more later, I am in a rush now.

I currently have Motherboard Asus P5B-Plus Vista edition which has
1 x PCI-E x16, 3 x PCI-E x1, 3 x PCI 2.2

I plan to build a data server with this motherboard and buy Promise Supertrak EX8350 which is PCI-E x4 Raid controller card.

My question is. Instead of buying a new motherboard that has PCI-E x4 slot.
Can I just install the PCI-E x4 Raid controller card into PCI-E x16 slot which is normally for video card? And Just buy a cheap regular PCI video card for PCI 2.2 slot?

Hopefully someone could help me with this and I thank you in advance.

A:PCIe x4 Raid controller card into PCIe x16 slot

The 4X card has the long edge connector for the socket I assume, then yes. I have a second x16/4 slot that, iirc, they say will work as a 4x slot. That said, do they make a PCIE x1 videocard for the short slot?

Hi all

I have H61M-ITX board with 1 x PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot (blue @ x16 mode)

I wan to install there PCI Express x 4 card:

I made clean Win XP SP3 install + all MB drivers on top. After I inserted pcie x4 card and boot up. Win XP didn't detect the card (though leds on card are blinking from periodically)

I then tied LAN adapter I have to check if all is fine with MB. I took this one:

same behaviour - system doesn't see it but if I plug eth cable then leds on lan card blink.

please tell me what is wrong I do? I checked bios for anything related to PCIe and found nothing.

A:PCIe x4 card doesn't run in PCIe x16 slot

Have you tried updating your Intel chipset drivers? They can be found at in the download center. They would have updates for the PCIe drivers and other assorted H61 chipset features.

Hello guys, i'm having a bit of trouble with my Sound Blaster Xfi Fatal1ty titanium, the issue is as follows:

There's a huge heat sink that prevents the card fitting properly into the single pcie x1 slot on my board, so what i rly would like to know is if it is possible to have it working on a pcie x4, risk free ofc. I've done a few searches on this forum and i've read it is possible but i rly want to be sure before doing anything. Another doubt i have is if i need to make any changes on my bios cuz i'm not sure if pcie x1 and pcie x4 slots work on the same power specs.

Thx to all in advance

I am planning to upgrade my video card. I saw this one from Nvidia. Geforce GTS 450. I checked the specs and i saw the "bus" and it says PCI-E 2.0 x 16. My motherboard(Asus P5G41T-MLX3) has PCIe x16. I also have researched that the PCIE is backward compatible meaning the GTS 450 is compatible with my mobo. Now, my question is, will my mobo which has pcie 1.1 only be a bottleneck for GTS 450? if so, what video will you recommend so i can play new games like need for speed shift 2 unleashed?

I don't think different versions would bottleneck that much that you could notice.. What are your system specs and what resolution are you willing to play it?

Here is something I recently found out I have tired this and it works You can use a PCIe x card or a PCIe x card in a PCIe x slot They work fine So if you think you are short of PCI-e slots you may not be A shorter PCIe card works fine in a longer slot On PCIe X X and X slots the first pins are card x1 Using PCIe slot x16 in a PCIe a all wired the same so as long Using a PCIe x1 card in a PCIe x16 slot as the PCI-Express card fits in the PCI-Express slot it should work This is not the case for the legacy PCI -bit non-express slots that are not PCI-Express Those are not compatable with PCIe cards Picture of assorted PCIe and PCI slots The top four slots in the picture above are from the top to bottom PCIe x slot PCIe x slot PCIe x slot and another PCIe x slot A PCIe card that can physically fit in any of these slots will work even if it doesn't fill the entire slot The bottom th slot is a PCI legacy -bit slot PCIe express cards will not work in this slot It only accepts legacy PCI cards Here is the PCI-Express page on Wikipedia showing pinouts etc PCI Express - Wikipedia the free encyclopedia YouTube Video showing PCIe X card in a PCIe X slot x x pci Cards Fit Into x pci-e Slot - YouTube Here are links to discussions on this subject at Tom's Hardware quot Can I install a PCI-e x Wireless network card in a PCI-e x slot quot http www tomshardware com answers -x -slot html http www tomshardware com forum - -card-slot http www tomshardware com answers -x -slot html

I could be wrong but I seem to remember a manual switch on the motherboard for the second pci-e slot. If not then I believe you are right about the board and incidentally I also believe that baord was mass produced but had a myriad of issues so to get this much use out of it is a miracle.

@MikeNampui?, welcome to the forum. I can't find any specs for your computer.  The only information that I can find is the End of Life Disassembly instructions.  If you have a USB port on it, you can possible use a USB video adapter.  I am not certain that this would be any better than the integrated video, however.  It sounds like you are not satisfied with the integrated video performance.

I currently am running a Asus EN8800GT and have been for some time. However the PCIe X16 slot on my Foxconn motherboard says in the manual that is is a PCIe X16 (signal x1)...this concerns me.

Am I getting the full potential out of my vid card? Or is my PCIe slot restricting some of it's potential due to the signal x1 thing as I'm not sure what that means.

Would it be worth it to upgrade my mother board? I am also running 3gb ddr2 667 if it makes a difference.

I've seen many graphic cards and motherboards coming out this year. They support PCIe. I heard that PCIe slot is faster than AGP slot.

There are at least 3 slots of PCIe on many modern motherboards I've seen. (probably 1x,4x, 16x)
- I'm wondering what devices or hardware would use PCIe slot beside the graphic cards?
- Why modern motherboards (today) give you 3 or 4 slots of PCIe?
(Graphic card (single) would only need one slot of it.)
Sound card/modem/etc still use PCI slot, aren't they?
- Anyone knows any motherboard that gives you PCIe slots (2 or 3) and also more than 3 PCI slots? (mostly, I found only 3 PCI slots and PCIe slot on many motherboards)

Thank you for answers...

My thoughts

This "new" PCI-E name is very confuseing and hasn't lured me to update my
Motherboard, cpu and video card yet in order to find out.
I think it's just a way to sell new motherboards and video cards.
My 8x AGP 9600 XT will do for now.
I have yet to see anyone overwelled with their new PCI-X video.
Lets here from some.

i have a palit geforce 210 pcie 2.0 TO BE placed in a 1.0a pcie slot mobo

A:what will decrease if a pcie 2.0 gpu is placed in a 1.0a slot

Hello nfsworldrace,

The difference is the bus bandwidth speed that a PCI-E 2.0 and 1.0a can handle. Going to a 1.0a will reduce the performance of the graphics card due the smaller bus speed of 1.0a.

PCI Express - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

PCI-E 2.0 = about 4 Gbit/s max (500 MB/s)

PCE-E 1.0a = about 250 MB/s max (2 Gbit/s)

Hope this helps,

Do you want the bad news or the...... bad news.....

Your system does not have a PCIe x16 slot, nor does it have an AGP slot.

Your options for upgrading your graphics are extremely limited on that system. You can ONLY use PCI or PCIx1 graphics (not PCI-e x16).

Umm.... Welcome to Techspot? Wish it was with better news. So it goes with Dell....

A:Anyone overclocking the PCIe slot for video card?

I've seen it but always figured that it wouldn't do much but possibly cause instability, since I think the pci-e x16 slot already has more than enough bandwidth. Not sure though.

Hello all

i was just about finished my first build but noticed that there was a small slither of thermal paste that some how got into the primary PCIE 16x slot. Must've gotten got on when i pulled the thermal paste away from the CPU heat-spreader.

Anyway, only one single pin inside the slot got touched with a minute amount and the rest went around the slot housing itself, so no biggie there. The small amount was high enough on the pin for me to somewhat "lift" most of it off but there is a barely noticeable discoloration on it now.

If it makes a difference, it is a XFX 680i LT SLI mobo. Now my question is, is this MOBO good for scrap now? I haven't dared install my video cards yet in fear that I might fry something.

A:Thermal paste got into PCIE slot, do i bother using it now?

Hey techspot forums,

I am not sure if this is a problem, but aren't the Asus P5N-D motherboards' PCIE x16 slots supposed to run at 5000 MHz, rather then 2500? Mine runs at a stock 2500 MHz, and can be overclocked to 3000 which is the max.

I have read somewhere that since the slots are PCIE 2.0 it doubles from 2500 to 5000. But I have checked in GPUz and both slots are at PCIE x16 2.0.

Nvidia System tools report that the slot runs at 3000 max, once i have adjusted the base FSB from 100 to 120. So could the multiplier not be working properly for the PCIE bus?

A:PCIe slot clock speed 3000MHz

no... PCIe 2.0 slots are x16 speeds, which is 2500mhz. why are you looking to overclock the slots? those boards are unstable enough as is...

I'm not familiar with SM 5, but I believe that it is identical to DirectX 11 support.

This vendor only sells in the US and Canada, but it gives you some idea what exists: - Computer Hardware, Video Cards & Video Devices, Desktop Graphics / Video Cards, PCI Express x1, DirectX 11

Are you sure that your motherboard has no PCI-E X16 slot? The last person that I encountered here thought that his board had no PCI-E X16 slot, only X1, but he was mistaken.

A:Running PCIe 3.0 Graphics Card on PCIe 2.0?

PCIe 3.0 is still irrelevant at this point, there is simply no current card that can effectively make use of the full bandwidth of 2.0 let alone 3.0. It is overrated and offers no real life performance advantage over 2.0. Running any PCIe 3.0 card in a PCIe 2.0 slot will not affect performance, the benefits of PCIe3.0 are only visible while running intensive applications with a multi-GPU setup.

A:PCIe 2.0 to PCIe 1.0 Crossfire will there be any issues

You might need to be more specific.
I don't think I've heard of a motherboard that natively takes a 2.0 spec lane (500MB/sec upload/dl per lane) and splits it to 1.0 (250MB/sec upload/dl per lane) - that is usually the function of an onboard bridge chip (or lane extender) such as Nvidia's NF200.

Now, taking your comments at face value -although if you could post the motherboard vendor/model it would certainly help- then it is likely that the PCI-E lanes would be 1.0 spec.
The bright side is that, the HD5770 doesn't use enough bandwidth to make any difference whether the lanes are 1.0 or 2.0 (or 3.0 -soon to be added), unless the slot is labelled PCIe x16 but is actually x4 electrical (or lower).

A:Question about PCI-e slot below dual slot video card

My opinion ...

Yes, setting up like that will have an impact. The air flow to your GPU will be restricted so it will more than likely run hotter than it did. It may still stay withing recommended specs, but it will run hotter.

The motherboard has onboard sound (RealtekŪ ALC892 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC ), any particular reason why you don't use that? Onboard sound is perfectly good for gaming and the like now, its not like older machines where you needed a dedicated card for decent quality. In my opinion, you only need a dedicated card if you are doing a lot of detailed audio work (mixing, remastering and other specific audio work). This would totally remove the issue.

The type of memory doesn't matter, its the type of interface the computer supports among a few other things to watch for.

You likely have a PCI-Express slot, as long as it a x16 slot it doesn't really matter if its a version 1.1 or 2.0 slot.

Is this for your Dell or another computer? Whats you budget and what needs do you have for the video card?

You can't add a slot to a motherboard.

How old is this computer that it doesn't have a PCI slot? Those have been around for quite a while. Are you sure it doesn't have one? Even AGP is not new technology.

EDIT: After seeing your other thread, are you asking if you can purchase an AGP or PCI video card? That's a totally different question, and the answer would be yes depending on which slot your motherboard has. How much it costs depends on what you plan to use the computer for. A simple one is cheap, and high-end gaming cards can get expensive.

Which Is Best ? was easily the introduction of the PCI-E bus system which promised to deliver the ever increasingly powerful GPUs in graphics cards from the shackles of AGP but does it With its increased bus bandwidth PCI-E should allow the latest generation of graphics cards - almost little PCs within a PC nowadays to fully unleash their polygon crunching rendering and painting abilities It is a new technology though and like its siblings DDR and SATA it s aimed at providing performance increases in the long run development of components rather than in the immediate application of current hardware Bearing that in mind we take a look at two cutting edge gaming systems both armed with an ATI X XL card and a -bit Athlon CPU but each based on a different architecture It s time to find out how AGP fares against the current incarnations of PCI-E and whether the upgrade hype is justified Welcome to our crossed AGP PCI Nforce KT shootout Continue nbsp

Is this a trick question?

Maybe this is a totally noob question but I was wondering,

I am currently running a ATI Radeon HD 3870 x2 on a MA790FX DQ6 motherboard, do I need to change any settings to run the PCIE card in 2.0 or should it run itself.

I am under the impression that both products are 2.0 compatible?

How would I know that it is running in 2.0?

I have ran GPUZ v0.2.5, this says that it is running at x16, but doesn't mention 2.0.

Anyone help please

A:PCIe 2.0?

It should natively run at 2.0. Either way 2.0 isnt a huge advantage over regular pci e anyway, but I think you're fine.

Hey all-

I just recently acquired a ThinkCentre tower for the family to use. It's on the older side, but it's still decently powerful - enough to handle multiple users running multiple programs. However, I'm looking to boost its ability to run some of the games the kids want to play. So I'm looking for a fairly cheap PCIe 1.1 card (ATI would be preferable; nVidia is acceptable). I think the power supply is 300W - I couldn't find the wattage on the side, but I'm taking a stab given previous experience with older ThinkCentres. Looking for something in the sub-$50 range. Any recommendations?

EDIT: Oh yes, and I'm running Windows 7 Pro x64 on the desktop.

A:Looking for GPU for PCIe 1.1

This looks to be the best bet your circumstances/price:

DIAMOND 6450PE31GSB AMD Radeon HD 6450 1GB GDDR3 SDRAM PCI Express x16 Video Card -

The trouble is, if no card, then the PSU might be just enough for what it's running currently and not give ANY or very little room for watts needed by a video card, worse case you have to swap in a new PSU, it's probably due for one anyway, I'd get one rated 80 Plus Bronze or higher.

Looking at Getting a HyperX Predator PCI-e SSD for my HP Z600 Work Station. From What I've read online there are a few quirks about installing said device and was thinking that someone with experience might share what they know.  And by quirks I am refering to any drivers or Bios features that need to be modified for the drive to work. Any info would be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance!

I was also thinking about getting a HyperX Predator for my HP Z400 Workstation (same series, single processor machine, same BIOS). Here's what I found out after some research: according to the manufacturer and some reviews, the drive uses the AHCI protocol and contains an Option ROM which is needed by BIOS based systems to recognize the device. On Windows, msahci (Microsofts generic storage driver) does the work. Unfortunately, I could not find out if it's possible use it as system drive. For my project, installing Windows 7 onto the drive and booting from it was a must. The chance is 50/50, so I'm waiting to get some more info before placing an order. In theory, the workstation BIOS should be able to load the Option ROM, to identify the card and to integrate it into the bootable devices list. Maybe one of the tech guys here (Dan, are you around ???) can give more details about Zx00 Workstation BIOS. If you plan to use the SSD for data, you're good to go. Just make sure to not buy a NVMe drive because these are incompatible with legacy BIOS.Good luck P.S.: Article HyperX Predator SSD in a HP Z600High performance PCIe SSD | Strike3D

All the hot new graphic cards from ati and nvdia are supporting PCIE 2
So here is my question. How big impact (on performance) it will be using those cards in PCIE 1 slot vs using them in PCIE 2 ?
Is it worth to buy a new MB with PCIE 2 along with the new card ?

A:PCIE 2 in PCIE 1

PCIe 2.0 effectively doubles bandwidth and offers better flexibility, while maintaining compatibility with PCIe 1.1

Looks like the will fit PCIe 1.1 without an issue

I don't think you should rush out a purchse a new board though.

Q: PCIe x1

I was expecting PCIe x1 cards being released in 2004 when the technology was released. Was I foolish in thinking this? Why haven't we seen a great amount of cards using this new technology created?

A:PCIe x1

There are many products using PCI-E x1. Take a look here:

PCI-E is not the dominating interface because there is no real need for it.

PCI is more than adequate for most things, more and more peripherals come integrated to motherboards, mobos still ship with PCI slots and PCI-compatible chips are dirt cheap.

ok so im looking for new vedio cards i have a GeForce 9500GT and i am seeing 2.0 and 2.1 PCIe will both work in my GA-P45-UD3P MB? or do i have to look at 2.0 cards only?

A:PCIe 2.0 vs PCIe 2.1

yes, PCIe 2.1 is backward compatible with 2.0 and 1.x

I haven't come across any threads of PCIe SSD. Is any one using them. Can you boot from one?

Even compared to regular SSD drives they are mega expensive so I don't think too many people would run one in there personal PC. A company may run one in a high use server just for the performance advantage. I do believe you can install your primary OS to one, so yes they can be bootable. It's a controller and drive on the one board.

Hello everybody!
I have on my motherboard ( DFI LanPartyUT nF4 SLI-DR ) 2 PCIe x16 type sockets, meaning each x8 if SLI, one x16 and the other x2 if it's only one videocard inserted.
My problem is the chipset cooler which doesnt allow me to insert properly my videocard in the PCIe x16 socket (non-SLI). So I am wondering: what will happen (as performance) if I move the jumper for SLI, but using only the second socket which will have only x8 this way?
Thank you!

Makes no difference, you will not really see a performance difference between a 16x slot and an 8x slot. Most motherboard generally run cards when in dual mode (SLI/CFX) in 8x speed on both.

It will not matter unless you are running a Dual GPU card in an 8x slot.

Q: Pcie?

I have been looking for a new motherboard and CPU bundle and found this and im am new to PCIE and so if some one could please explain what it is and whether or not iit is compatible with my graphics card ATI Radeon 9250 (AGP)

Im New To PCIE So What I Said May Sound Like Utter Jiberish

how can i determin wether or not i have a PCIe slot or not? i know i have an AGP slot. i need to know because i need to buy a new graphics card to run can i find out if i have pci-e or can anyone reccomend a good agp video card that will run cod4?

A:PCI or PCIe?

PCI slots are white
PCI-E are black

If your motherboard is about a year or older, most likely it will be a PCI.

Hi...I'm shopping for a new motherboard and having trouble with the sloppy specs on both the mfg sites and dealer sites (ie, NewEgg, Tiger, etc). The Asus boards I'm considering are the P5KPL-AM or -CM which state PCIe, period. No mention 2.0. Same on the Asus site. I'm new to PCI express and wonder if "2.0" is implied just like 3Gb/sec SATA is implied when they say SATA 150/300, or the way Gigabit LAN is the same as 10/100/1000 Kbit LAN. In other words, is a PCIe slot version/rev 2.0 by definition on a current production board? The PCIe video cards I looked at state PCIe 2.0.

Does the PCIe 2.0 work in a regular PCIe slot? pretty easy question that i have not been able to find out in all those tech specs of pcie 2.0. thanks much

better question, will a pcie 2.0 card work in a pcie 1.1 slot?

A:PCIe 2.0

All PCI-E 2.0 cards work in 1.0b and 1.1 slots. Some of them have trouble in 1.0a slots. (nVidia models)

Right now I've bought a new graphics card. it's a Nvidia Geforce 9500 GT by EVGA and I wanted to install it into the computer. The problem is, it doesn't work. by that I mean that the computer doesn't detect it, the computer makes funny noises (and no, it's not the cpu fan or graphics card fan sound) also on top of that, I've went to future shop to get it fixed but they couldn't fix it.... I have no problem with my PSU (powersupply unit) because it's 650watt and the card only needs 350 watt. so That got me thinking. mabye it's the problem with the PCIe 1.0 slot. because it can't support that much power or mabye the motherboard is too old to support that much power.... can somone help please. I'm dying to know.....

thanks in advance.

please i need to know what is the PCIE SSD and why its petter than SSD ?

Can you help us help you? Happy to discuss computer theory in the abstract, but do you need specific help with a particular model? A desktop or a laptop? Only a few HP consumer models can use a pci-e M.2 mSSD but such a drive is roughly twice as fast as a standard SATA SSD or mSSD. Very broadly, the difference is that a pci-e device is closer to the processor and plugs right into the processor's main 6 lane highway with nothing in between. SATA on the other hand is a 2-lane side road off the main highway. Hope that helps.
