1st time build, so lost :P

Q: 1st time build, so lost :P

Ok so I m a first time builder here with a budget of I use my computer for web browsing with a million tabs so 1st time build, lost :P open I admit lol music recording editing normally about or so tracks only lite gaming minecraft with heavy skin packs and will be doing small video editing like boxes of video in one frame and watching movies both blue-ray and the occasional live stream I use Windows themes skins on my computer and have more rainmeter gadgets than I probably need I ve come across some good barebones kits for but they lack a few things which I may not even need lol I definitely need a wireless card no cable running to my room and obviously a blue-ray player I don t burn music or movies onto CDs if I need to I already have a burner I m looking for a minimum GB of RAM Do I really need an SSD My mind keeps saying quot YES quot but my wallet says quot nope not in the budget quot I do already have a TB drive for storage I would just like an SSD for the OS and programs But if that s not feasible I have no problem with a small HDD So what am I looking for that will meet the needs of my use and budget Mobo CPU GPU RAM PSU Case SSD-or-HDD Blue-Ray Player Wifi Card and after market cooler heatsink everyone always says stay away from OEM coolers go after market So if I m not all that crazy and this is feasible I appreciate any and all help and hope to learn a good bit in the process please feel free to teach so I actually learn something I m not loyal to any brand so I don t care about any of that at least not yet Thanks nbsp

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I would only make that recommendation based on whether the person will be overclocking. Neither Intel or AMD will package their CPU with a cooler that not sufficiently adequate under non-overclock conditions.

Have you assembled a parts list or are awaiting feedback first?

I built the PC and have all the hardware installed. The disc that came with the mother board is in the reader drive. No signal is detected by the monitor. I am unsure if it has a BIOS.
here is a link to my parts list

i have reseated everything twice with no results.

A:new PC build. first time build. no signal to monitor

have u plugged in the TWO power plugs on the motherboard
have u plugged the power for the video card
have u checked the case to mobo power wire is in the right spot
the video card u have requires a minimum of 500w power supply.......... u have purchased a corsair cx 500 which is not up to the job, while being a fine psu for onboard video........it is underpowered for your system

the motherboard u chose is a tad low end see reviews here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

A:First time build is this looking ok?

Is there any reason why you are matching the K version CPU with H77 motherboard chipset?

From what I hear the H77 is not very overclock friendly which is what the CPU K version represents.

Edit:
I would consider the nVidia GTX 660 Ti or wait a few weeks for the GTX 660 to be released. If the GTX 660 is too high a price the GTX 650 should release about the same time as the GTX 660. I'm not strickly nVidia, it has been awhile since I looked at AMD's offerings.

I'm building a PC, and I'd just like to know if all the parts are compatible, the video card is any good and weather I should get a better case than I already have. I'm looking to be able to play all current games and emulate PS2/GC (via a completely legal BIOS dump + using legit CDs). Also maybe a bit of overclocking, which I know I'll probably need some better cooling hardware, but that won't until later so I can pick it up as I need it rather than buying it now. As I've said I'm a bit iffy about the case, if I do find temperatures running a bit high, can I just mod it a bit for improved airflow/install a new fan & heatsink, or are there other problems to be concerned about.

Attached is a picture of what I have so far.

The parts list looks ok, except you need to remove one of the i5 CPUs from your shopping cart before checkout.

I am trying to build my own computer, using mostly new parts (mobo, graphics card, processor, memory) but using some parts from my old computer that are still in great working condition (Audigy 2 soundcard, one 120 GB hd and a 200 GB hd) but I have a problem. Most mother boards out there today have SATA connections and only one ATA100 connection on the mother board. Because I want to keep my old harddrives, I was wondering. If I plug my ATA133 hard drives into the ATA100 connection on the motherboard, what will happen? Will the speed decrease, or will the ATA133 harddrives be unable to communicate with the ATA100 connection on the motherboard? Thank you in advance for any help.

A:Need help with first time build please!

I have yet to get a motherboard that they have started to take decrease the number of IDE channels on a board just because they have Sata on there also. They are pretty much have two channels. One usually used for your HDD's and another for your CD Roms.

To answer your queestion though yes your HDD's will still work they will just be running at the ATA100 speed instead of ATA133.

I have an old SOYO Red Dragon PC which is getting pretty old and slow, compared to newer models. I would like to refurbish it as a second or back-up computer but don't want to spend a ton of money doing it. Can anyone recommend a motherboard that is 64 bit, but uses the intel processor, memory, power supply, etc from the old computer? Basically, I just want to swap the motherboard and as few other parts as possible to upgrade this machine. Thanks!

In the short term, I suggest you sign up for Email from Newegg; http://uh.urlgalleries.net/blog_gallery.php?id=2672047&t=3&g=medialink-79+(x20) Right now a Sony SATA DVD burner is on sale for 19 bucks, w/ free shipping.

Also, see if there's a "Microcenter" store in your area; http://www.microcenter.com/index.html

I guessing the the AMD 955 is a fine choice for the CPU. A quick look through Gigabyte's AMD motherboard should yield something with the features you need; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...007625 50001314 600007943&IsNodeId=1&name=AM3

There are others here with better insight on AMD's product, they'll be along shortly.

Hey there A few weeks back I posted in wanting some advise in how to build my i rig Well a few things changed and I don't have the i I got a few different parts here and there and just finally put the rig together last night But I seem to have an endless amount of problems now and I desperately need you help Here are my build! time First Specs Intel Core Extreme QX Ghz EVGA i cheesecake GB Patriot Viper BFG GTX OC Western Digital Caviar Blue GB Sata Ok so first thing is first My computer is saying my CPU is only Ghz It states the name of the chip but in the bios and benchmark test it says it's only running at Ghz What is the deal there How does that even happen Do I have a bad chip Or is my chip somehow being under clocked First time build! Now for the FUN stuff Ever since I first booted my computer up I've had COUNTLESS BSOD errors here and there By the way I'm running Vista Ultimate As well as the errors I've encountered I've been having some odd graphic errors too After around minutes of use all the images on my screen get changed back into like color mode instead of Millions of Colors so everything looks just horrible And things like clicking on the Start Menu give me only half the menu I thought maybe it was the Card overheating so I downloaded Riva Tunner and cranked the fan up to to test it out and I still get the same issues Then I figured it was my drivers since the ones that were on the CD were obviously old So when I try to go to Nvidia's site and download the correct drivers and install them Windows says that the EXE is corrupt And that happens no matter what no matter how many times I download the proper drivers Now for the good 'ol BSOD I've gotten different BSOD error messages so far and have no idea what the hell they mean These are the ones I've received E KMODE EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED A IRQ NOT LESS OR EQUAL NTFS FILE SYSTEM B SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION E KERNEL MODE EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED A MEMORY MANAGEMENT What on earth does that mean Is there always this many issues when building a computer

A:First time build!

I think you need to get into the BIOS and set a few things up. First being your memory. If you got DDR 667 memory and the BIOS is set up for DDR 400, this will create problems. I believe it is also clipping your CPU to 2.0Ghz. I would certainly look here. I do recall my XP computer that if the BIOS was set up to defaults, the CPU power reduced as a result of the BIOS looking for a particular RAM but my machine having a different RAM. I suggest you visit the mobo website and look for tips on tweaking the BIOS to see what hardware you have and it can then run correctly. BIOS setting at default are usually set to nonaggressive settings so we do not blow up are hardware. Emachine was famous for that and pretty much locked up the BIOS keeping us safe from ourselves.

I refer you to this thread were the computer did not recognize the mhz of the RAM installed producting BSOD. Read through it for some ideas.

Looks fine to me but I have 2 suggestions. Using an Intel cpu, I would be buying an Intel board as first choice, or another make but with an Intel chipset at least.
I would suggest WD hard drive. Seagate sata drives have been awful lately and I have seen many bad right out of the box, or shortly later.

ok, jumped in to my first build with both feet. but it appears i landed on my butt. lol... asus m5a88-v evo mobo...amd phenon II x 4 955 3.2g ame rt cpu. seems mobo specs do not support this processor. looked it up in asus site. that said, i havent found anyone that has a supported processor, acording to the support guide at asus. my problem is random crashes black screen, white screen yellow screen with viritcal brown lines, white screen with black vertical lines, and once a light blue screen. queston; could the onboard grafics card be dieing or is it because of the missmatched componants.

A:1st time build

If it says the processor is not supported, it won't work properly. There is a possibility that a BIOS update supports more processors, but read the release notes. Don't do anything that dangerous unless you are sure it adds the support you want.

So im considering of building my own pc (under 300?) and not buying one... So here are the specs and i need to know if anything is missing (and if you could help me find it and this is my first time building a pc!)
So i need the pc for general use and some gaming.
I will also need a very very very cheap monitor !
Here are the specs !

CPU:AMD A10-5800K (88,01?)
MOTHERBOARD:ASUS A88XM-PLUS (76,61?)
RAM:8GB RAM HYPERX DDR3 (52,50?)
PC CASE: DEEPCOOL SMARTER (LED) (23,80?)
POWER SUPPLY:CORSAIRV5350 (37,57?)
CPU COOLER:SPIRE SP526S7-1 (9,80?)
HDD STORAGE: HITACHI GST DESKTAR 7K 1000.C (39,00?)
Total: 328,19?

Edit: i changed most of the specs.

A:First time build pc !

What is this PC being used for? If you're not aiming for overall gaming an APU is fine. Otherwise you may want a dedicated GPU.

You are missing Memory Ram from your list. How much you need is heavily dependent on what you're doing.

You have no HDD/SDD for storage.

PSU I would likely change. Even more so if you're adding in something like a GPU.

Also, it being your first build you are choosing a very small form factor. The smaller you go the the more maneuvering you have to do in tight spaces. Add no experience to it and it may be a more problematic time.

If you have trouble finding matching parts I would suggest using PCPartPicker.com. It can compare prices and put together compatible components. In fact I will start you one, just press the edit parts list.
AMD A6-7400K - System Build - PCPartPicker United Kingdom

(I could not find your chassis in there listing, and I did not put in a PSU due to not knowing if you will be adding a GPU).

Go one step bigger and get an AMD64/3000 (with Venice core), Socket939, and a corresponding motherboard with AGP, such as MSI's K8N Neo2 Platinum.
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo2_Platinum&class=mb
In future you could e.g. upgrade just the CPU for a DualCore CPU.

And get a case with a better and more powerful PSU, like the Antec Sonata II.

You don't need an extra soundcard, it has it built-in.

The above changes should not cost you more than ca. 70.-

A:First time build, need help

I only see DDR2 1200MHz RAM as the standard for the mobo you've linked to. There is no DDR2 RAM that runs at 1333MHz stock AFAIK. You may have the FSB and RAM frequencies confused.

As for your build, everything looks good, except for the fact that you don't need the X38 board if you're buying a 9600GT, since it supports only Crossfire. If you don't want to use a dual-GPU setup, go for a cheaper board like the GA-EP45-DS3L or the GA-P45-DS3R. Also, you can get the TX650 for slightly cheaper from here.

The difference (i am pretty sure) between IDE and SATA is just the connectors, the physical harddrive platters are the same, so just go with SATA drives.
What matters most in power supplies is probably the wattage, the SeaSonic SS-300ES 300W ATX12V Ver.2.2 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply - OEM is a good low power powersupply.

I just finished building my computer. I turned it on for the first time. Only top fans worked, but rest didnt, but screen didn't display anything. Then remembered I forgot to put my ram in. Now computer turns on, but no fans work. Would anyone have suggestions?

A:New build won't boot first time.

Specs?

Do the fans spin up at all when you first press the power button? A lot of times the fans won't turn on until they're needed.

Power supply might be a big weak with the rest of your components installed...
And I would not use that brand of memory when modules by Crucial, Kingston, and Corsair which have a lifetime warranty are available.
but in theory all should be well.

I would like to build a computer that is up to date and should not need any major upgrades for years. I'm not going to use it for gaming. I use it for personal use and home buisness uses. I want to be able to install software programs for years without have to upgrade any time soon.
Is there any problems with this? Is there anything else I will need? Id like to keep it at $1000 or below.

A:First time gaming Build

Something like this is a good base. You can get a slightly lower motherboard, leave out the sound card, and put more money into GPU and PSU. Other people can help with that.

Do you need to purchase a Windows license, monitors, kb/mouse?

A:1st time build...not working

I recently built my box using the K8N Neo Platinum board and an AMD3400+. I had a similar problem, but it turned out that a connection was loose on the motherboard. You might want to check that. When the platinum screen comes up you should be able to go into post view, maybe that will give you some insight into whats actually happening as it freezes. Are you able to get into bios?

You may have to overclock the system in order to use the 1600 RAM. Will you be using an old optical drive? You didn't list one. Did you allow for the purchase of an operating system in your budget? 64 bit I presume?

I installed a new copy of Window7pro 64 bit onto the new build.

The event logs show several different error types, but I thought I would try to tackle them one by one.

The most persistent seems to be this type, which has just happened:

"A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the lmhosts service."

The computer had been idle for about five minutes (it is set to switch off screens after half an hour, and sleep after an hour.)
It spontaneously closed down.
Pressing the power button fired up the fans, but the screens did not come back. So I switched off the rocker power switch on the back of the case then on again, pressed the power button and it started up the fans but again no output to the screens.

Then I held in the power button on the front of the case and pressed it in again and the system rebooted normally.

lmhosts is a local configuration file that tells the computer where to look for certain internet ip's. You can search for it and open to examine it with note pad.

I suspect your network card or router is simply configured incorrectly

one way to tell is to go to stat>cmd>right click and run as admin>ipconfig /all

upload the output to us

A:Attempting a 1st time build

Heh, hey Tranch. Wow, you just opened a whole can'o'worms.

When attempting to put together a new machine, you can start from pretty much any point you want, but you kinda need to go through the compatibility tree from there. If, for instance, you start with "Hey, I want a computer that uses this motherboard.", then you will need to start with the types of connector it uses, what it's capabilities are. For instance, does it use AGP, PCIe 1.0, PCIe 2.0 or PCIe 3.0? Is it made for AMD or Intel processors, and which ones is it designed for? What type, speeds, and sizes of RAM does it accept? You'll pretty much need to do this for each and every part you're planning on putting into the case. Hard Drives, CD/DVD drives, sound cards...all of it.

Clock speeds aren't quite the issue that they once were, but they're a consideration, as well. If you stick with items on the motherboard's approved list you usually can't go wrong. And, generally, you can take backward-compatability into account as well. This is when, say, they motherboard lists PCIe 2.0 as its capability, it will generally also work with PCIe 1.0. Those numbers can usually go down (not always), never up. And, it's always considered as the motherboard in the lead...you can go down from *its* numbers, not the other way around.

Chances are pretty good that the case will work for most situations. Though small form-factor cases frequently won't work the larger motherboards and can get pretty crammed with stuff when you start getting into gaming rigs. If it's an ATX case, you're likely OK.

From there, then, you will want to consider the power supply. Chances are pretty good that your 1000W power supply will work with most anything you'll put together on a budget. Though, depending on its age, it may/not have all of the connectors you'd need for today's components.

Other than sitting down and doing all of this research on those items you've assembled, that's about all I can guide you with.

Frankly, there's still quite a bit that we could go over, but that should be more than enough for you to get started. If you have any more specific questions from there, just let me know.

Good Luck!

I have a Window 7 box that will not display on the monitor. This is a box that has worked for a long time. Switched out the video card (PCI express) for a new one still no video. Any suggestions or thoughts I would appreciate. Since I cannot see anything on the monitor, it is hard to diagnose.

I just finished building my new New boot priority first SSD and build: time Ivy Bridge system and it booted up fine The motherboard is a Gigabyte Z X-UD H I have installed a New build: first time SSD and boot priority Samsung SSD in SATA Port and a Samsung HDD is SATA Port In addition I have installed an Asus DVD drive The Bios recognizes all three drives in the System ATA - Port Information Serial ATA section of New build: first time SSD and boot priority the BIOS BUT in the Boot Options Priorities it recognizes only the Samsung as priority and the Asus DVD as Priority The Samsung hard drive is not listed If I am reading both the manual and other information correctly the Boot Option Priority section will only recognize the primary hard drive In this case it would be my SSD Am I correct and I can go ahead and load Windows or am I missing something Also I am assuming at this point that Windows will assign the SSD as the C drive Will I need to manually assign another letter for the hard drive Thanks nbsp

A:New build: first time SSD and boot priority

That is setting the boot priority for each type. You will need to set values for the specific boot types.

mb_manual_ga-z77x-ud3h_e.pdf

Hard Drive/CD/DVD ROM Drive/Floppy Drive/Network Device BBS Priorities

Specifies the boot order for a specific device type, such as hard drives, optical drives, floppy disk drives,
and devices that support Boot from LAN function, etc. Press <Enter> on this item to enter the submenu that
presents the devices of the same type that are connected. This item is present only if at least one device
for this type is installed.Click to expand...

If you look under the Hard Drive listing, you should see both HDD and SSD. Select which one you want to boot. The one you select should show in the priority list for booting to HDD.

I am hearing that this motherboard does not support the e8400, except with the newest bios update (rev 8a). I understand it is shipping with rev 7. I have also read from reviews at newegg that the board is recognizing the chip right out of the box.

Question: will the board refuse to post if the chip is not recognized, or would it post and say "chip not recognized" or some such?

Also: I do not have another, older lga 775 chip sitting around. Is it possible to update the bios some other way? Possibly contact gigabyte and have a new bios chip sent?

And: does anybody have a good suggestion as to what to do to troubleshoot short of completely disassembling the system?

Any advice is welcome

A:New Build specs, First time builder

WOW, thats a nice build!

Although I gotta ask, what is it you do that would require the 4x8GB memory modules? Unless you are doing something spectacular, 2x8GB would probably be more than you need for a very long time.

Since you have chosen a mSATA SSD, I take it you have done your homework and know the motherboard supports mSATA. I had to double check to make sure you wasn't making a mistake. As for the 1 SSD option instead of 1SSD/1HDD, you can make that decision at a later date if you so choose.

Hi guys My old PC died a long and slow death over the last few years and i decided what better way to comemorate it than by tearing its guts out and custom-building for the first time The looking time PC build, advice 1st on for parts. old pc was an alienware area yes overpriced etc etc i know I ve decided that i m keeping the PSU the 1st time PC build, looking for advice on parts. case itself the dvd-drive and the dvd-burner drive The PC i m looking to build will be used for a variety of tasks Internet music films etc But The primary focus will be for gaming Essentially i want it to run Crisis at max Possible parts i m looking at are Motherboard Gigabyte board with eax built in whatever the board lots of shiny usb slots are a must Ram gb mghtz x gb or gb mhz x gb Graphics gb ATI or nvidea Processor core i i Hard drives gb ssd for boot-up system files tb western digital rpm mb cache OS Windows bit professional premium Now i have several questions If the motherboard has EAX built in is there any point in buying a stand-alone sound card Would i notice 1st time PC build, looking for advice on parts. an appreciable difference in sound quality RAM If i were to be using the thing for mainly gaming what would be better gb of mhz or gb of mhz Would i notice an appreciable difference I have heard that graphics wise ATI performs better but is less stable What do you guys reccommend Also most games make crappy use of SLI or Crossfire so is there any point in getting two cards or just getting a big single card If it helps i have no interest in the new d craze Seeing as how i would be doing mostly reading from the hard-drive is getting a gb ssd only an option Processor I have been told conflicting stories on what would be better for gaming Some have told me that i is the best while others have told me actually i works better for gaming due to the way it handles threading etc What do you guys reckon PSU The machine currently has a watt efficiency PSU It is however years old with heavy use Would this thing be able to power all the stuff above or am i best off upgrading to a w supply I have read of some other dedicated cards that are meant to help gaming such as a physx card and akiller gaming network card but again i have been told conflicting stories on these some swear by it others say its makes no difference I have no interest in blu-ray and the vast majority of games i play are digital downloads steam etc so i m sceptical about the need to change my disk drives Now i realise that this is a lot of questions to be asking and that i may be dooming myself to a world of blue-screen but i reckon its best to thrash this all out before i ever start picking parts Thanks for any and all help guys Much appreciated Yours Roy nbsp

Hi I m Time Build Suggestions? Computer and Help First - building a PC in a few months and was wondering if the following would run First Time Computer Build - Help and Suggestions? fine or if i m even First Time Computer Build - Help and Suggestions? heading in the right direction I m not quite certain if the PSU is enough I m looking for this PC to play the latest games with ease ie Assassins Creed Bioshock Black and White etc and hold the ability for heavy multi-tasking XD as well as run Vista Basically an all-in-all good PC Here s what i ve planned out Note I ve tried to keep this as cheap as possible Australian Dollars without taking away too much from performance Though i suspect prices will fall over the next three months so i m open for suggestions for more expensive parts MOBO Gigabyte GA- P-S RAM Corsair Value Select GB x CPU Intel Quad Core Q VIDEO MB Gigabyte Nvidia GeForce GTS OPTICAL Asus x Lightscribe DVD Burner HD Seagate GB DISPLAY Dell quot Widescreen CASE Option - Thermaltake Soprano Black with W PSU Option - Thermaltake Soprano DX Black without PSU PSU I think that s about it for now Thanks in advance nbsp

A:First Time Computer Build - Help and Suggestions?

Use this Power Supply Calculator
It will give you an estimate of your required wattage.
I would recommend a PSU around the 600W range. Just to make your system open to newer upgrades.
PSU brands are really important in terms of reliability. Good PSU manufacturers include Antec, Thermaltake, Cooler Master, Seasonic, FSP, Enermax.

Your motherboard is a bit on the low side, especially since you are using it with the mighty Q6600.
First of all, you should not get the P965 chipset anymore, because it's being replaced by the newer one, the P35 chipset.
One excellent Gigabyte P35 mainstream board is the GA-P35-DS3R (the famous GA-P965-DS3 was its predecessor).

For the RAM, 2x1GB is a good amount, but you need to stay away from the Value series (it's for people who are on a really tight budget).
The Corsair XMS2 series is great mid/high-end RAM and would be perfect.
You should get regular DDR2 RAM (800MHz is enough). Get a 2GB dual channel kit and make sure the sticks have 4-4-4 timings.
Example:
Corsair XMS2 2x1GB DDR2-800MHz PC2-6400 (4-4-4-12)
Try to find the same one at the place you shop at.

For the video card, the 8600GTS doesn't exactly justify its price. It performs barely any better than the 8600GT, yet it costs $60-$100 more.
I would recommend that you either push your budget and get an 8800GTS-320MB (entry-level high-end card), or get the XFX 8600GT XXX-Edition (an overclocked 8600GT, more value for the money than the 8600GTS).

Hope this helps...I spent quite a while typing it

This machine has been running magnificiently as well as I can tell until this happened today.

I restarted the machine and had no further problems that I can tell.

I have attached the dump file and the system health report and my full spec's are located in "My System Spec's"

Thank you very much for your help!

Blamed on NETIO.sys. Often when this happens it is actually Zone Alarm. If so I would remove it and replace with microsoft Security essentials and the win 7 firewall. If not I would remove the AVG and replace with MSE.

So, I know what components I am going to buy, although with no experience, I fear that I may forget to purchase some essential equipment, things like anti-static wristbands. I'll put some questions in a list, which should make it easy. (antec 902, gtx 460, i5 760, 4 gb ram)

Will I need to purchase any additional wires for my system? (i.e. that don't come with the components themselves)
Does thermal paste come with the retail processor?
Are there any points of general advice you could give me?
If I was to buy only the components listed in the 'Enthusiast system' found in the PC building guide, what else would I need?

Thank you so much for any help.

Maybe. The case you purchase will come with the connectors it needs. Your PSU will come with them too. Your motherboard may well ship with things like SATA cables etc in the box. If not, you need one sata cable for each device (optical and hard disks).

Does thermal paste come with the retail processor?Click to expand...

It will likely come with it already applied, but you can apply better stuff yourself. I'll leave someone else to tell you the best stuff. I just use OCZ silver thermal stuff (can't remember proper name).

Are there any points of general advice you could give me?Click to expand...

Everyone has different way of doing things. It goes without saying that you should read the manual for the motherboard before doing anything.

This is how I build a system:
Unpack the motherboard
Fit the CPU and cooler (some people find this easier with the motherboard in place. I prefer to do it on the bench)
fit the RAM
Unpack the case, and remove the sides
Fit the power supply
fit the optical drive(s)
Fit the hard disk(s) (If I'm fitting a fan behind the disks I do this before the drives)
Fit the standoff's for the motherboard into the case
Fit the motherboard to the case and screw it down.
Fit the graphics card to the now fitted motherboard
Wire up all power connectors on the motherboard
Connect the SATA connectors to the optical and hard disks
Fit the silent, replacement and much better case fans
Have a cuppa
Then check absolutely everything from the start to the bottom

If I was to buy only the components listed in the 'Enthusiast system' found in the PC building guide, what else would I need?Click to expand...

Without looking you need the following as a minimum:

Motherboard
RAM
CPU & cooler (retail packs include both items)
Thermal grease if your replacing it
Graphics card (if your not using on-board graphics)
Optical drive
Hard disk
Power supply.
Case
Screen ( )
Operating system (its not hardware but its useless without it!)

Recommended:
Decent silent ball-bearing fans to fit your chosen case

It goes without saying that you should take your time, and finish something before doing something else. If its not fitting, don't force it!

If you have any specific questions by all means ask away and I/others can answer them.

Argh I?ve been contemplating on when to buy a new rig for a while now. I want one sooooo badlyyyyy... I've got about 2500 dollars in my wallet and really wanna get one... But anyways with Vista w/ DX10 and Conroe coming out and who knows what next year anybody have a suggestion as to when would be a good time to buy? (I need an answer better then never here... if possible...)

Conroe is coming out (July 23?) at surprisingly cheap prices I've been thinking now is the time to buy! However I wanna wait till DX10 cards become available and hopefully by then the prices on the Conroe processors and mobos will have dropped a bit. Anyways, is it a bad idea? Good idea? Why? and when do some of you folks plan on buying new rigs?

Hi,
This morning prior to going to church I received a notification that a major Update for my Windows 10 Home (x64-bit)was ready to download and install so I went ahead and installed (Build 10586).

Everything seemed to go smoothly. However, I just realized I lost half of my Favorites. I have all my original Favorites from 'A' to 'M' but all the ones from 'N' to 'Z' are gone.

Any ideas?

Thanks and regards,

A:Problem officer? First time computer build!

Your monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 906BW from the other thread) runs a max resolution of 1440 x 900 so unless you plan on changing it for a larger monitor which supports higher reoslution you can look at lower specification graphics cards and check their performance in reviews/Tomshardware/Anantech sites to see if it would be suitable for your gaming needs. I suggest looking at benchmarks and search for the graphics card you are considering and the games you play to see how it performs at the 1440x900 (or similar 1680 x 1050, 1366 x 768m etc.) resolution.

Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231277 Should i get 2 pairs, or just stay with the 4gb?Click to expand...

Just one, 4GB should be fine. Plus you can always get more later if you need it. For gaming anything over 8GB is generally considered overkill. I'd start with the 4GB.

Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115220 This is the most expensive item, should i stick with the i5, or can i go with an i3?Click to expand...

If I remember correctly i5 is a quad core (4 CPU cores in one) part. i3 is dual core, with this is in mind more and more games are utilizing multiple processor cores so I wouldn't recommend anything below a 4 core processor. If you want to save some money I'd go for an AMD quad core or 6 core CPU instead of the i3. You won't need the i5 for the games you have listed but it is a better performer. What you are looking at is from the first generation of Intel i processors (socket 1156). I would look at the i5 2400 (socket 1155) instead. ~$15 more for on average 20% better performance, but we can possibly make savings on your other choices.

For a cheaper option either and AMD Phenom II processor (X4 or X6, 4 or 6 core), or one of the new A8 ones with the Fusion core.
Phenom II X4 could be had for about ~$50 less than the i5 ($129.99) and a AM3+ motherboard for under $100 and give similar gaming performance in most current titles. And AMD will be releasing a new processor range(Bulldozer) that will use the same AM3+ socket so gives you room for upgrades in the future.

With the AMD A8 option (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103942 - $139.99) you could do what we discussed in the other thread and get that system without a graphics card and use the built in GPU, and get a graphics card later on if you felt you needed it. Only thing is I haven't really been that interested in the Fusion APU(combined CPU and GPU) series from AMD and have no knowledge of their roadmap for upgrades for the FM1 socket motherboards it is paired with.

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131783 nothing much to say about it, does it work with everything else?Click to expand...

You have picked out a socket 1155 motherboard so your original CPU choice (socket 1156) wouldn't have been compatible. It's a different version of the one I have in my computer (Asus P8P67 Pro). A good choice. Although you can get cheaper motherboards the Asus is a good choice in my opinion. I'd maybe look at the Z68 chipset motherboards. This is a newer intel chipset and allows for the use of the graphics core that comes on the i5 processor. I believe most motherboard manufacturers are producing boards with "graphics switching" that allows the use of the low power GPU core when just doing stuff in Windows/OS and the dedicated graphics card when gaming. This saves a little on your electricity bill and means you don't have to listen to graphcis cards fan spinning when your on facebook/email etc. It's not going to be good enough for gaming but it also gives you a relatively free backup in case anything goes wrong with your graphics card,

Hello ImmortalOne.

We have checked two of your latest crash dumps, and both of them are caused by BitBefender.

You need to uninstall BitDefender. Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.
Download, install and update those, and then run full system scans with both of them, one by one.

Also, there are some display related errors.

Select the “Startup” tab.

A:Is this a good time to buy? (proposed build inside)

Short on time here, may edit back later.
Now is a decent time to build, AMD, Nvidia, and Intel have thrown in their latest and greatest(?) into the market for a little while, enough time for prices to drop and newer midrange winners to come out.
Decent build, I would up the motherboard to maybe a 790GX or something if you are an over****er, and I would get a 945, and go with an AM3 motherboard since prices of AM3 and DDR3 are FAR lower, nearly DDR2 and AM2+ prices.
I do not think the CPU cooler is outstandingly good, i'm sure Rage_3K_Moiz or someone knowledgeable can recommend a sturdy cooler and thermal compound if you need it. You can certainly go down to a corsair 550, and should if you do not plan on adding in another graphics card.
Quad cores are, again I mention, not the best for gaming, though AM3 leaves many more upgrade paths than an intel dual core, the E8xxx series dual cores still dominate the gaming market, though a phenom IIx4 or x3 are good deals.
I personally may wait a little and see if AMD can throw out some speedy new 40nm 4870?s, but go ahead and order when we fix up your build if you want, 55nm -> 40nm is not going to bring a world of wonder, I don?t think.

I think AM3 may leave you some more room to upgrade later, and i7 is expensive, i5 will leave you more crippled. about directx11, I have absolutely no idea, but by the time DX11 comes out, DX12 may draw you in for another wait . AM3 and DDR3 is already so much cheaper than before.

Do you know when sc2 comes out? I don't think all the best starcraft players won't adapt to sc2 very quickly, the micro just seems far too warcraft3 style, I hated that game.

Hi,

I just want to surf the net. No high-speed where I live, just dial-up and I do not game. I have no intentions of over-clocking the system. Would the following be a good system to build?

case - Rosewill TU155 (no SATA - whatever that is???)
processor - E2140 Allendale 1.6 GHz - LGA-775 socket - dual core
OS - XP
motherboard - MSI G31M-F
ram - crucial - 2x240 pin - DDR2 800
HD - ATA100 - WD400JB

Will I need a video card or will one be on the MB? Also, will the MB have a modem for dial-up? What would be a good CD or DVD burner?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Yeto

This is my first attempt at putting something like this togather and then getting it to run will be another first.

This questions may seem silly but to some poor ***** who would rather be fishing, it really is important...

1. What is the "clock ratio" how do I figure what I want it set at or just ignore and accept the default (auto). Options are 100mhz + multiplier or "Auto". Anything over 18x it says to use auto. This is a GA7N400-L mobo and AMD 2700+ cpu

"Auto" says it supports 400/333/266 fsb cpu's. What does "support" mean? It sound like it will work but maybe not as effeciently as it could? Wrong mobo?

Is there place that describes clock ratio? Like "clock ratio for dummies"?

So far this is the most confusing I have come too, surely more will follow.

Thanks for any replies, Arlon.

A:First time build clock ratio question

Have it set at auto....This will automatically detect your fsb "clock ratio" if you want to be more specific the fsb on you CPU is 333mhz....but setting it at auto shough do the trick

From the activation of Windows 10, how many hours must elapse before Windows downloads its latest build?

It is possible to speed up this time so as to almost immediately download the latest build?

I believe it's a first come first serve basis via a queue. Therefore, there is no way to speed it up.

I want to build a computer that will be used for 3D content creation (Maya), visual effects (probably After Effects), and Adobe Creative Suite in general. This will be my first build. My primary question is: are all of the components I've selected compatible?

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=20861425

A minor question I have is about handling the components, especially the motherboard and CPU. While I have not seen in any of the do-it-yourself videos I've watched, anyone putting on, say, nitrile gloves, is it okay if I do? Or does that introduce more problems than it helps.

Can anybody out there help?

My first attempt at building a PC and it all going wrong.

OEM Vista Home Basic 64bit SP1
QX6700 Quad Extreme CPU
Asus P5KC mobo
1TB Samsung HDD
Geforce 9400GT graphics
4GB DDR2 RAM
Blu-ray drive
650W Corsair PSU

Everything is new, however mobo was bought from ebay, claimed to be new but can't be sure. I've updated the bios with latest version from Asus site and formated the HDD.

First attempt to install OS got me to the copying files screen, then BSOD, didn't get the error code.

Second attempt, got to the coloured screen before the keyboard language select screen and it hung up.

It hangs up at this point every time. I've tried reformatting the drive but still can't get any further.

Could it be the cd? I got it new, or is it hardware?

Please help

A:First Time Builder Seeking Critique on Final Build

I'd recommend stepping down to this CPU and getting your motherboard from here. Also, step down to this PSU and use the remaining money to upgrade to a GTX 260 or the HD 4870. Both perform on par but the ATI card runs hotter, so if you're worried about whether or not your case is ventilated enough, the GTX 260 is for you.

For a good guide, check this one out.

I get this problem off and on, and what happens is after a while my build slows down. The CPU is at like 49%. Other times it is faster and cpu is at 49%. Is this an error in Windows or what

Sierra's "Lost in Time" was a game I played when I had Windows 3.1. (I'm using Windows ME now) The game runs under MS DOS and requires a mouse.

I've installed the game and I can get into it...but the mouse pointer never shows up so I can't play the game at all.

I've read about loading up mouse drivers in MS DOS, the autoexe.bat and config.sys files but whatever I've tried, I just can't get the mouse to work in the game.

Any ideas?

As an Insider, assuming the upgrade was from an activated 10240 build with a logged in Insider MSA, then you should be OK - but ask in the Insider forum... I dropped out a long time ago.

The key and subsequent (blocked key) error code is irrelevant on such activations.

I run Vista Home premium HP Pavilion a6110n. I can't locate where to go to find my clock to put it back on the screen. There used to be a small screen I think ,been so long now, that had all kinds of little things you could put on the desktop including the clock, strange I can't remember any of the other little toys, but anyway, I could click it onto the desktop or click it off and I can't remember where to go to do that. The little screen used to come up every time it was rebooted, but I took it off the startup and can't remember what it was called. Don't really need the clock, but it was handy. Can you give me a clue where to look for these toys. RonT22

No extra string like winmain ---- etc as per previous builds.

Every night usually between 8-10pm my DSL goes down. This has been going on for several months now (never happens during the day). I have replaced the DSL modem and my NIC card. Sometimes I can power cycle the modem and it will bring it back up, somethings that doesn't work. My modem is connected to a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router which is very secure. I have called Earthlink about this issue numerous times ... and I have spoken with Linksys ... but the problem goes on!!!

Can the Norton Log ... or any other log on my system help me figure out what is going on? Does this seem like a problem with the local telephone company that Earthlink rents space from?

Your thoughts/ideas would be most welcomed!!! I would like to end my frustration on this issue!

Hello, now I've cooled down a bit, I'd like to let you what I need help with. I recently updated Windows to windows 8.1 and all of a sudden a lot programs were going much slower than they usually ran. I went around the internet for tech support and one solution was to create a new user and delete the previous user (which didn't work). Well, I lost a Doom wad that I had spent a few months on on my new computer and a 60 hour Skyrim save, along with a lot of personal information that I had written down. Is there any way to recover a deleted profile or at least recover the files that I've lost?

Note: I stupidly had my most up to date WAD file saved to the desktop.

Hello tialaree3, and  to Bleeping Computer!  We need to scan your computer with the Windows System File Checker:
The sfc /scannow command (System File Checker) scans the integrity of all protected Windows system files and replaces corrupted, modified, or incorrect versions with the correct versions if possible.Note: Be aware that if you have modified your system files as in theming explorer/system files, running sfc /scannow will revert the system files such as explorer.exe back to it's default state.Note: Make the appropriate backups of your system files that you have modified for theming if you wish to save them before running sfc /scannow.For Windows Vista / 7:
Click the Windows Start Orb in the bottom-left
In the search box, type cmd
Right-click on the search result cmd.exe then click Run as Administrator
Next:
Copy and paste the following line of text into the black box:note: to paste, right-click in the black box and choose Paste
sfc /scannow

Press Enter to run the commandnote: this scan may take a while to finish, and if SFC reports that it could not fix something, run the command again to see if it may be able to the next time. Sometimes it may take running the sfc /scannow command 3 or more times to completely fix everything that it is able to.
We need to retrieve the System File Checker log:
Click the Windows Start Orb in the bottom-left
In the search box, type cmd
Right-click on the search result cmd.exe then click Run as Administrator
Copy and paste the following line of text into the black box:note: to paste, right-click in the black box and choose Paste
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log > "%userprofile%\desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

Press Enter to run the command, a text file sfcdetails.txt will be created on your desktop
Please post the contents of this log in your next reply

I was downloading the upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro from Windows 8 Pro.

When I was at 40% download, my internet connection lost. So I waited, but it automatically restarted from 0%. What the hell? I downloaded that 40% by giving 10 hours of time. Now I have to start again from 0%. Assume I'll start downloading again and if this
time it will fail at 90%. So What should i do for complete the download

Can I install Icon Packs designed for Build 7600 to Build 7601?

An Icon Pack was saying install on to 7600 only and after I checked my regedit, I learned that I have 7601 (Probably SP1, I don't know).

Would I have any problems if I install the icon pack?

Thanks.

A:Can I install Icon Packs designed for Build 7600 on to Build 7601?

You can normally install icons anywhere you like, on any machine or system which uses them, they are merely small graphics of various types. Unless the "Icon-pack" is using software to install something else, ( in which case be careful what it does), you can install it anywhere.

Some "Icon-packs" make extensive changes to system files, are dependent on the system to which they are installed, and best avoided.
