Do I need to replace my CPU?

Q: Do I need to replace my CPU?

At random, XP will restart on its own. The computer was built less than 2 years ago and I'm not quite sure if it's a software or hardware issue. AMD 2600+, 1.9 ghz, 512mb RAM, windows XP, radeon 9600 graphics card.

I find the computer crashes when it's put under a heavy workload. For instance, I opened Spy Bot S&D to rule out any infections and within 30 seconds of running the application the computer restarted. This occured back to back just moments ago. Other times I am using WORD or browsing. This has been occuring for more than 4 months now.

I've ran a CPU application to max it out and again the computer restarts. It occurs everytime I run the program.

I also monitored my RAM while it performed and only 50% was being utilized.

How do I know it's the CPU and not the Motherboard or HD?

Preferred Solution: Do I need to replace my CPU?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Spobot Killed the Computer in the Den with the Fireplace Poker

This isn't "Clue" we're paying, you say?

Spybot uses 100% of the CPU. Your box could be entering thermal cutoff.
Use canned air to clean out the CPU/ heatsink, and just for good measure the rest of the insides as well.
Find out if your board has hardware monitoring and find what the critical zone temperatures are. You may have to install either the board manufacturers monitoring software or a utility like "Speedfan', available here at Techspot.

I'm replacing a motherboard for a HP laptop. I need to replace this backplate for the CPU heatsink to the new motherboard. I've tried to pull it out but it seems to be glued onto the motherboard.
If I manage to pull it out, should I replace the glue, double-sided tape or whatever is underneath?

HP G62-b80SS laptop.
Intel Core i3 CPU.
Thank you

A:How can I remove/replace this CPU heatsink backplate (where the CPU socket is screwed)?

It is probably double stick tape used to insure it stays in place. Replacing it is your call. As long as the heatsink is mounted correctly, it really doesn't matter if the backplate is loose or stuck in place. Sticking the backplate simply makes mounting the heatsink easier to manage.

I currently have 2 x 4GB sticks to equal 8GB but I want to upgrade to 16GB total. Initially I was going to buy the same 2 x 4GB sticks again since I have 2 RAM slots spare, but then I read about dual channel/quad channel etc and basically want to know if it would be better to add 2 more 4 GB sticks, or buy 2 x new 8GB sticks. Thinking performance wise, the price isn't too different.
I have MSI Z77A-GD55 mobo, and my RAM is Kingston 8GB 1600MHz DDR3

Thanks in advance for advice

A:Upgrading my RAM, better to add, or replace?

For DDR3 there is no quad channel, either way would work fine, go for the cheaper.

I have an old router. It's a D-link DIR-625. Lately it seems like browsing on my laptop and tablet have been sluggish. Could it be wearing out or has technology passed it by? I'm wondering if I should replace it.

A:When to replace a router

There are numerous other things that could effect Internet traffic. Of the most common in my area is bad service from ISP (bad lines or equipment).

Resetting your router could help if it is the router causing the issue. Simply unplugging it is not enough to do a full reset of all settings.

I dont think im getitng a CPU upgrade in awhile so i need to know how often should i replace my CPU thermal paste. I dont think i replaced the paste in like 6 years (Day my dad bought)
Any suggestions and will it improve my performance

A:How often should I replace my thermal paste?

As long as the temps are not too high there will not be any performance loss. I wouldn't worry about replacing thermal compound, unless you are experiencing temperature issues.

If you are wondering what your temps are. Download Core Temp and watch your CPU temps.

I have a HP a1020n Pavilion I use to do audio reconditioning on, it's running WinXP. I've maxed the memory and have a terabyte drive installed already. My question is; should I bother to try to upgrade to Win7 and add a DirectX 9 video card and a better audio card to replace the onboard chip or just junk it and buy something newer with Win7 packaged with it? I've read one thread here by someone trying to install an upgraded video (Upgrading video card on HP Pavilion a1020n with ATI Radeon X1600 Pro PCI-e) and it doesn't paint a very good picture of trying to do any of this. Any thoughts/advice are appreciated.

A:To Replace or Upgrade?

It isn't worth the money to upgrade in exchange for the performance increase you would get.

What do you audio reconditioning with? What software? Potentially you could scrap XP, install Linux and use Audacity. Only costs you your time, no money.

I've done a fair bit of audio reconditioning of speeches recorded on cassette tapes with Audacity.

Holy s*** mate, that is an extremely high end build.

The only thing I can see not working here is the two Ares GPUs. They both have water-coolers, so it might be a bit difficult to install them together.

The only thing I can say is, you better know what you are doing, or have somebody around who knows what they are doing, before you consider putting together such expensive components.

Hi guys

Hope you can help here. I'm building a box with an I7 CPU and an NH-D14 cooler. The cooler is so big it obscures the RAM stick slots, so I took it off, put the sticks in, put it back on. Given that the machine has never been switched on - it's never even made it as far as the case - and given the components are the same with the same orientation, is it really necessary to clean/remove and reapply the thermal paste?

Thanks in advance all

A:Do I need to replace thermal paste on a CPU that's never been on?

Opinions will vary, but as long as you haven't fully fitted the cooler and the thermal paste is okay then its fine to re-fit it.

It doesn't matter if the CPU has been powered, the issue is whether the thermal paste will still function correctly having been disturbed when you removed it. If you're in any doubt I'd remove, clean and add more paste.

Do they all fit? Is any of this proprietary? There is a Corsair CX 450 for 30 bucks I can pick up will it fit? The noob

A:Need to replace PSU in a Dell Vostro 200 Slimline

They are not proprietary, however they are TFX form factor rather than the standard ATX form factor which severely limits your options. High wattage units are non-existent in this form factor due to size constraints.

Here are some options:
FSP Group FSP300-60GHT 300W = $35
SeaSonic SS-300TFX Bronze 300W = $43

That would be the idea if you have it set to boot from disk in the system BIOS. The CD/DVD must have first priority over the HDD to boot.

Good afternoon.

I have a system that is a few years old and am looking to replace the motherboard, CPU and ram. the tower has a sata HDD and a PATA optical drive but the motherbaord has fried and im looking to upgrade to a more up to date setup.

Im not after anything extreme as I dont game and im only really interested in having a decent speed for internet use and word processing other than that im not overly bothered about being super fast.

I was thinking of an AMD CPU Phenom II 555 Black Edition Dual Core Processor but would like suggestions on a motherboard that would support such a processor and not cause me a lot of problems with the HDD being compatible

My thanks for any suggestions on this topic

A:Sugestions required to replace mobo and CPU

Here are a few reccomendations:
ASRock A770DE+ (Full ATX uses DDR2) = $54
ASRock M3A770DE (Same board but uses DDR3) = $60
ASRock 880GM-LE (Micro-ATX, DDR3) = $55
ASRock A785GM-LE (Micro-ATX, DDR2) = $59

These are all good boards and have SATA and PATA support it is just a matter of what form factor you want/need and whether you want DDR2 or DDR3 memory. With DDR2 you may be able to reuse your current memory but if you want to upgrade your memory DDR3 is a better option since it is faster and cheaper. If you have not heard of ASRock they are ASUS's budget brand and tend to have allot of Legacy ports (PATA, FDD, PS2, etc.) making them good options if you plan to reuse older hardware.

Built a computer for my son to game on. I have a MSIK8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI mobo. I have been running two Nvidia NX7600GT's. One of them blew the other night. Any suggestions on what to upgrade to? I have a 600w power supply so I think I'm pretty good there.

I'm kind of new to the building and compatibility part; so any help would be wonderful and well appreciated.

Also, probably a stupid question but here goes. I assume that since I'm running dual cards now, I will continue to run dual cards? Would like to stay with Nvidia products.

Thank you in advance!

A:Need to replace video card

From what I can remember you have a few options:

- Run single new card, Nvidia GTX 460 or the 550Ti cards would offer decent performance at a mid to lower end price range. Or spend more for the top end Nvidia offerings GTX 580, not sure their minimum PSU recommendations, but at least require 2 x PCIe Power connectors.
- Run dual cards, 1 new, 1 old 7600GT as NVIDIA® PhysX® processor, offloading that processing from the main new card.
- Bin the old working card and run 2 x New. GTX 460s are nice in SLi but all others above this can run SLi too.

Just because it is an SLi motherboard it doesn't mean you have to run 2 cards. It will happily run one card, it just has support to also run 2.

Today I burned 3 DVD-R DL and I get theses issues:

data to be burned: total 7.89 GB
all discs same brand
disk 1 just burned 0.47 GB using MagicISO
disk 2 burned 7.89 GB using MagicISO
disk 3 burned 7.89 GB using Nero Burning ROM 10

disk 1 was unable to be read it, obviously, it was an incomplete burn
disk 2 and 3 were readable but when I try to copy them to the HDD
the transfer rate was very low like 200-300 KB/s and remaining copy
time showed 7 hours.
Later I put 2 other DVD-R DL that I burned a long time ago with these results:
disk A copy 100% with transfer rate 4-5 MB/s
disk B copy was almost imposible since the transfer rate was 150 KB/s
and remaining copy time showed 1 day
So my DVD burner is in bad state?
Should I replace it ASAP?

I don't want to lose more DVD-R DL

I have a computer case and it has this pretty blue lite fan in the front but the down side is as of recently it makes a lot of noise. A ton on boot up and then it calms to about half the noise but none the less still loud. I'm looking to buy a replacement, hopefully one that is silent, problem is that I don't know the first thing about PC case fans, how to replace them, how to tell which is a good replacement. I also don't know what kind of case I have so I can't look it up and just figure out the fan size that way.

Help would be appreciated.

A:Looking to replace noisy case fan

Fans are really a 'you get what you pay for ' proposition. The key is in the bearing type. sleeve, rifle, ball FDB (fluid dynamic bearing) HDB, etc. generally if you wnt quiet, choose one that is not a 'hyper fan' in that it moves a massive amount of air, or one that comes with a controller so you can adjust the speed a 120 mm fan for example will typically move arounfd 45-60 CFM. For longer life stay away from 'sleeve' bearings.

as a rule of thumb, i like to use at least a 450-500w power supply for any video card that requires external power directly from the power supply (minus the enthusiast grade cards of course, which will require more). you may be able to get away with a 400w unit with the 5570 but i don't know the power requirements off the top of my head. is there any specific reason you are looking to upgrade the graphics?

i would like to point out though that for an extra ~$75-90 you could get a 5770 which would be much more powerful than the 5570.

I have a seven year old presario 2511EA laptop. She works but she is slow. Norton 2010 running on it does not help. Is there any to speed her up such software, changing cpu speeds ( currently 2.4Ghz P4) or replacng either memory, cpu or whole motherboard ?

A:Should/can I replace motherboard/memory/CPU Presario 2511EA

Motherboard replacements that fit that case are also slow. You are limited by the maximum of 1 GB of pc2700 memory in two 512 MB modules... and it is the memory that makes the biggest difference... Not the CPU speed.
You cannot find a motherboard that will be faster and still fit all the ports and plugs on the case... There are some mighty decent laptops that will be much faster and run at least 2 GB of memory that would be a better choice... Dell, some Acer, Lenovo, Asus... as well as newer Compaqs or HP's.
Prices will be low for the rest of the summer after high school and college graduations are over... and some sellers will give you a significant discount to reduce inventory. The prices will go back up, but with new models that are faster and run 4 GB of memory or more.
Treat yourself to a Windows 7 machine with the potential to run 4 or 8 G B of memory... a quality build will last you anlother seven years.

It's always best to do a clean install of your OS when changing the motherboard in order to prevent any sort of driver / hardware conflict.

However, there are ways to avoid a full install of the OS. Read through the following links:

Well after much screwing around with my second computer system I have concluded that the GeForce 7200GS I bought a year ago is dying. So I'm looking to replace it.

I don't need anything spectacular, I don't even use the computer. Just let me roommate use it and the most demanding thing she does is play some WoW.

Looking to spend no more than $50.00. Its going in a PCIe slot. And I would prefer something with a fan. Not big on passive cooling, at least with the case its in. Not the best airflow. I don't need dual monitor out or TV out or anything fancy.

the PSU I have is a 500w Antec.
right now I'm kinda eying this card:

boot the cd, go to Hardware test section and run the eurosoft tests.
its a comprehensive set of tests for all your hardware. you will then know what is causing the problem. (use winrar to extract the image, you only need to download the three parts from one of the sites)

I reccommend that you only perform the Non Distructive tests.

This is a PURELY physical problem - up until I dropped my laptop on it's side on a table the other day, my DVD/CD drive read disks beautifully.

It opens and shuts smoothly and fine, but when I try and start up sims or play a DVD, it says there is no disk. I restarted my computer, and it is not responding accordingly. I will attempt this again, but first I would like to know if fixing it without replacing is even possible. I examined the disk holder bit and nothing seems crooked or broken. If it's misaligned, how do I tell?

If I can't figure out how to fix the damn thing, how would I go about ordering a new part?

A:Broke my Cd-Drive Fix/replace?

with most laptops the type of connection to thte board is via one plug affixed to the back of the drive (not like a desktop with power and then data) so if you're getting power to open the drive you probably have the connection you need. The lens that reads the disc is probably broken or way off line. Surely someone has a broken one of those laptops that you can get the drive pretty cheap used off ebay

My girlfriend recently dropped her laptop while the dvd tray was out which bent it and it won't open now. Is it possible to change the DVD-Drive on a Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5874. If so where I can purchase the part from so I don't have to pay the heinous repair costs. I have done a lot of work with desktop computers and some with laptops I just don't know where to locate this info.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

A:Can you replace a DVD Drive on this Laptop

Yes. There are several available on eBay... Most of the drives are of equal quality and work well, but you may have to change the peripheral hardware to fit... If handy with small tools and logic, you can do it yourself... otherwise find a talented tech friend.
You should totally remove the optical drive and partially disassemble the Toshiba to make sure nothing else is damaged that will make repairs difficult.
Any impact damage great enough to bend parts in an optical drive, could have done other very severe damage.

1. What type of hard drive do I need to replace it (found many on ebay) the original is 30 gb.

2. Is there any problem with replacing it with say a larger hard drive (60 or 120 gb)?

3. Will it come with windows xp already on it or can I simply load it from the disk that came with the computer?

A:Can I replace a Celeron Chip with a P4?

Actually it really depends on the Motherboard specifications

Please put your System Specs information in your Profile

If you have a proprietory computer like Dell; HP; Acer etc, please manually write this in the mobo field (ie Dell Dimension 3100 - as an example)

A:Replace the power jack or replace the adapter?

AND/OR inside the case the the jack is soldered directly to the motherboard. Is also possible that
1) It's already cracked
2) If not yet, it's gonna crack

So look to see what connection looks like between power jack and motherboard, If you feel u wanna/can re-solder yourself or the typically price to redo the whole power thing seems to run $125 parts/labor/warranty if you take it somewhere. So how much is it all worth to you?

Thanks to everyone that takes the time to read this. I want to replace my OEM MSI MS-6577 mobo that came with my HP for another version of the MSI MS-6577 mobo but the new one would have an AGPx4 slot and the current one only has PCI slots. I read that replacing the motherboard on OEM systems with Windows XP like mine has, will cause big problems unless it for the exact same make and model motherboard. In my situation, it is the exact same make and model but a different version of the mobo that would have an additional AGP slot. Would this give me BSOD or would the swap go smoothly? I am also hoping not to have to reinstall Windows XP without having to go buy a copy as I read you can't do that off recovery discs with OEM Windows XP builds. Thank you everyone again.:grinthumb

A:Can I replace my OEM mobo with the same make & model but different version?

The problem would be with Microsoft

I believe you could put a different version of motherboard on there, heck, you could put an entirely different make of motherboard if you wanted as long as it fits the case's form factor. Simply, the screw holes on the motherboard have to align with the holes on the case.

The trouble you will run into is with Microsoft. Your copy of XP is associated with the serial number, model, and make of your present motherboard, and it's recorded in Microsoft's database. That's what happens when you activate a Microsoft product. The operating system or software will get your motherboard's information and record it. Now here comes the problem...

If you put in a new motherboard, the operating system on your hard drive is going to look up your previous motherboard's information when it boots up. If it sees a new motherboard, it will say, "I'm not associated with you, so I must not be licensed with you!" and it will tell you to contact Microsoft or buy a new copy of Windows.

What you have to do then is call Microsoft and ask them if you can associate your copy of Windows with a new motherboard. They will want to know why. Usually, they will only do that if your motherboard failed, exploded, or somehow became destroyed so you had to replace it. I don't know about motherboard upgrades. To Microsoft, each and every motherboard is a separate computer, and you are only licensed for one computer.

So, what I would do if I were you is to call Microsoft and ask them if you can move your license to a new motherboard before you do anything else.

Replace a dead processor to get Hard Drive data or just that you like the old machine

Ok. I don't know why none of you responded. I would have thought you had that knowledge at your fingertips.

It took another two days but I found that the only thing you really need to match is the socket type and chipset. For what I was doing, the socket 478 supported chipset 865PE so that was ok.

You can get the socket type off the motherboard or just by inspection by someone knowledgable. Or if you have any BIOS data you can look it up.

Discretionary is the clock (processor) speed, the cache, the bus speed, max temp...
But faster IS better.

To get to old hard drive data, in general any machine running the same OS ought to work. But in the case of XP, I found since I had a password OR because I was trying a HD with XP Pro as slave and a machine running XP Home, I could not get to my data.

I never tried the Linux solution in my original post. That would have only gotten me the data though, and NOT the setup it took so long to build up just the way I wanted it.

Intel has a processor finder that is helpful. Terminology varies upon manufacturer and common usage. It's confusing. Articles I found helpful can be found at
the intel product comparison chart

So to find what I wanted I used Excel to build a spreadsheet of (Intel terminology) sSpec, SOCKET (aka pin type), CHIPSET, processor type, clock speed (in GHz), bus speed (in MHz), bus/core ratio, L2 cache, L2 speed, technology (aka architecture, in nM or micro tech), therm design (in W), therm spec (in degrees C), hyper thread, dual/single core, core step, and CPU ID.

You can also find out what each of these are, but for most people they are not important. Just be sure you match the socket (and chipset) to your motherboard.
As far as Intel goes the sSpec is the most important. If you know that you can retrieve the socket info. I found mine in the archived stuff - which was hard to find.

Now go forth in eBay!

So now I have passed on a small bit of knowledge gained. Funny. If someone has replied ("just match the socket and you'll be fine") I would have missed the chance to learn alot. Let me know if my understanding is incorrect. I think it would be nice for one of you to write up a small guide or point people to other sites at the top of this forum. Any takers?

A:Which ATX mobo should I get to replace with my emachine mobo

The tricky part of this is you will probably have to not only replace the motherboard, but also the power supply, processor and memory

Here's an example:

The power supply is old and you wouldn't want to damage a new motherboard would you. The old memory is DDR. The new board takes DDR2 memory. You may be able to use the old CPU or processor

They should be fine, the heads aren't above the platters like they are if you drop/bump it while its running. If they were in the box when they fell then I'm sure you will be fine, they are packaged to take a beating during shipping.

Even if they aren't you could either return them to the store, or RMA them.

As you have access to another PC, find and download the diagnostics software from the makers website (maxtor is now seagate)
this will confirm if I am right! Do not keep trying to access the drive as it usually makes it worse and limits the chances of data recovery.
Hope you have a backup -

Hi, I currently have an ATI Radeon X300 Series 128MB Video Card and I need to know if I can now replace it with a card thats DDR2?
This is my current video card specs taken from ATI Catalyst:

Graphics Card Manufacturer Powered by ATI
Graphics Chipset RADEON X300 Series

Bus TypeCI Express
Current Bus SettingCI Express

Memory Size 128 MB

Core Clock in MHz 324 MHz
Memory Clock in MHz 196 MHz

The card i'm thinking about getting is:
XFX GeForce 7300 GT / 512MB DDR2 / SLI Ready / PCI Express / DVI / VGA / HDTV / Video Card

NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE / 256MB DDR2 / Supporting 512MB with Turbocache / PCI Express / DVI / VGA / TV Out / OEM / Low Profile / Video Card

Would It work?

I recently purchased a HP DV6648SE laptop from Bestbuy.

I was wondering if anyone has successfully removed Vista and installed XP Pro and have everything working fine.

I tried but it is not recognizing the hard drive at the start of the XP installation process.

If anyone knows a fix for that then I can continue on trying to get Windows XP Pro installed successfully.

A:HP DV6648SE - Replace Vista with XP - Has anyone done it yet?

A number of people have done that !

Are you sure you want to remove Vista completely ?

Think about cloning the Vista partition first - HERE (preliminary boot hack).

or maybe dual booting could be an option - HERE (you may need a Vista DVD)

If your determined to replace Vista, you`ll need an DOS boot disk and XP CD - HERE

That`s assuming you don`t have a Vista DVD,of course

Great post.

Go HERE and follow the instructions. See if that helps at all.

If it doesn`t attach 5 or 6 of your latest minidumps and we`ll see what we can come up with.

It might also be a good idea to physically disconnect anything not required to run your system and see if it becomes stable. if it does, then adding one thing at a time and testing, may reveal the culprit, if it`s hardware related.

My motherboard is Intel 915GAV. where there are only one IDE channel. Now When I use my Hard Disk (Samsung 80GB, 72000 RPM) with this mother board its ok. But when I add any other harddisk or DVD/CD ROM with it as a slave, then it says "Pri Master hard Disk S.M.A.R.T. status BAD, Backup and Replace" during boot up and wait for "Press <F4>..." and after I press "F4" it takes much time to load OS(WinXP Sp2). And after loading if I check with Intel desktop Utilities there it pops up "ERR_SMART" or in details of Dard disk says "Status: Error ID=02". Now I think my hard disk is ok. Now please tell anyone how to solve this problem. If you need any more information please tell me. I will be waiting for your response. Thanks in advance.

A:Pri Master hard Disk S.M.A.R.T. status BAD, Backup and Replace

Do you have any jumpers on your hard drive? Are they set correctly? It should be Master and Slave Present (if possible). The slave drive should be set to slave of course.

If you are using a 80-connector IDE cable, then it does matter which plug goes where. Black is master and grey is slave.

How about replacing your IDE cable?

In BIOS, have you set all your IDE devices and attributes to "auto"?

If your BIOS version is earlier than 0457, then you could try updating to the latest version.

I have a compaq presario SR1010NX. When I upgraded my computer to Vista, the pins holding my heatsink/fan on top of my processor broke. I have to place my tower on it's side in order for the fan to be running. When I place it upright, the cpu shuts down and the fan doesn't work. As long as I have it on it's side, it will work perfectly. My 40 gig burped then chkdsk deleted EVERYTHING. I'm assuming the 40 gig drive was the root of the problem an want to replace it with a Seagate 160 gig but have concerns about war stories I've read in various forums about doing this. Are any of these true?

1. Is there something called a "STAMP" on the eMachine motherboard that prevents installation of any hard drive that isn't purchased from eMachine?

2. The restore CD for the 40 gig eMachine won't work on the new 160 gig upgrade? I've even heard that it can't even be done with a brand new Windows XP SP2 home installation. What gives?

I've heard some horrible stories about upgrading eMachine laptop hard drives. I'm searching info before buying the new Seagate 160 gig drive.

A:Want to replace eMachine M2105 laptop 40gig with Seagate 160gig

Good luck to you. We have repaired a number of these with new drives. They don't remain fixed, crashing after three months. We suspect the cooling channels are too small... and when they fill with dust and hair, the M105 overheats.
We have NOT had any trouble using the restore discs to install windows on a Seagate or Western Digital 80 GB hard drive. We also have not had trouble installing WXP OEM on a larger drive up to 120 GB.
However, they do not stay fixed... due to some problem with the computer which we never bothered to understand.
We ordered a new 3-Disc recovery set from eMachines... and had no trouble installing it on a number of machines.
The problem with the other sizes is due to restrictions by Microsoft, not by eMachines... and eMachines tech support has been willing to help us reset tje system.

If it involves sending it off to a technician does anyone know the avg cost to replace the white clamp or complete pci express slot? Hello and welcome to Techspot.

You should be able to disable the S.M.A.R.T function in your bios settings.

You can usually get to these by pressing the delete or F2 key at bootup.

It would seem that your HDD is getting ready to fail. This may not happen for a while, but nonetheless it is deffinitely a good time to backup all your important data.

A:I need your opinion / hint to get a new MoBo (to replace my current damaged one).

what mobo u should get

well im relativeley new to this membership but i have been a technician for years, and in my 6 years' experience working with modern systems Intel has been the best mobo maker, followed by Gigabyte. An Intel D865PE board, with any options you want, would be your best option. they are currently inexpensive, but as Toms Hardware guide said, very well designed and built. the performance excels that of competetor's products, and it can overpower the expensive 875 series. it was also the last intel board to have a genuine raid controller on it. here in chicago it is listed for around 100 us dollars, 120 when i bought it in sept. 2003. it is also the last line of chipsets that will support your current CPU. rival products from Gigabyte are rumored to have equal performance and reliability, but gigabyte has a history of cheating on benchmarks and selling you a deliberately overclocked system unbeknownst to you. i have said intel board with all the features and am very, very pleased with it's performance and reliability. especially good is it's audio, IEEE 1394, and ram support.

A:Want to replace my motherboard, processor, and ram need help.

you have another post stating that you want to get another socket-754 processor for you existing motherboard.

now this post states that you want to get a new mobo too?

honestly I would not suggest getting another processor for a socket-754 system because it will still be bottlenecked by the slower hypertransport bus and single channel ram.

if you still want to use your AGP card and still have the ability to uprade to PCI-E in the future, consider this mobo I used it myself until a month ago and it worked great. and it has gotten very good reviews. it also lets you upgrade to AM2 when it eventually is worth it to do so (i.e. K8L)

I have a Dell Precision 330 about 5 years old. The HDD controller appears to be acting flaky. First off, the BIOS won't recognize the new 300G ATA HDD I plugged in. Second, there are parity and other disk errors reported in Event Log.
The system is running Windows XP Pro with SP2.

If I buy any MOBO, say from Asus, will theirs fit the Dell case?
It looks as though it would, but knowing OEM's I have my doubts.

But then, one may argue as to why I would need to keep that behemoth of a case anyway... well, I'm not sure. Perhaps I would be better off with a whole new system... from Dell, or to build myself.

What is your advice?

A:Need to replace MOBO in Dell Precision 330

my advice would be to build one yourself. don't buy another Dell. for the same price or less as a new Dell would cost you could build one yourself which will be better quality and more upgradable.

you can replace the mobo if you want. the dimensions series use standard microATX motherboards and an ATX power supply, I don't know if the "precisions" are the same.

I dont want to install a pirated home edition but is there anything we can do other than buying another copy of xp since they already bought a copy with their emachine or hp? Thanks guys! This has been bugging me for some time now!

Clifnotes: I cant use the restore CD's on Emachines/HP's with these new replacement motherboards, so how do I work around/fix this?

A:When you guys replace mb's on hp/emachines, what do you do about the OS?

I wonder that myself as well, is there a way to 'restore' everything back on a different mobo in HPs?

My specs are in my signature below I just recently picked up oblivion and BF and am finding that my video solicited---want card, replace 9800 pro Advice to suggestions? AGP is lagging My Sapphire mb pro has Advice solicited---want to replace AGP 9800 pro card, suggestions? done a good job for me thus far but I think it s time to trade it in I m not ready to get into the whole PCI express thing because my mobo only has an AGP slot and I m looking at keeping my computer in its current config for at least another year So I m just looking to upgrade to a better AGP card The market has changed so much since I bought my last card that I m sort of in the dark I m probably looking to spend about - at the max otherwise my wife would have a cow I m not sure I can even get a better card then what I already have for that kind of money but it can t hurt to look I don t really care whether it s nVidia or ATI Suggestions appreciated nbsp

A:Advice solicited---want to replace AGP 9800 pro card, suggestions?

is there a reason to upgrade the card?
There is no real software out there that would justify buying a newer AGP card. PCI-E has been out for quite a while now.

I still have my FX-5500 card (AGP) and it plays doom3 just fine. I have no real reason to upgrade myself as my 'pooter does everything I want it to. (And its still fast enough.)

A:Looking to replace broken LCD screen on Compaq 700 series laptop. Any Tips?

Easy to do

Its not a complicated item to change.. You will need a T-9 Torx driver.. Pull the rubber pads off the Bezel.. (all 5 4 small corner and the one long center top) Then the rest is downhill.. If you need a screen I have one here..

I've a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M 7400 Notebook, with Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter. I want to replace this with Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2200 BG Adapter.

Please advise if I can do that myself, and if yes, how to open the laptop, and where to find the adapter in there to replace.

A:Replace Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card

Hi, welcome to TechSpot

Since nobody has answered this thread, i will give a generic how-to-guide...
i have no experience with a fujitsu, but if it's like most laptops, there will be an access panel on the bottom of the case. it's usually a just 1 screw then it pulls up and out which will give you access to your mini PCI card.

mini-PCI cards lock in similar to laptop RAM sticks, there will be 2 locking tabs toward the top of the card, release them both at the same time and the card should "pop" up, then simply pull it out. it will be the opposite procedure to instal the new one

hope this helps... good luck

I am having troubles with my usb ports. Everytime I plug a camera or mp3 player to my always says an error that no device was found. Do I need to replace the port? If so how do I go about it.

A:I think I need to replace my USB port...

did you install the drivers for those devices? If not, it won't recognize the device.

Hey, all. I have an emachined W1640 here, and in 3 days have had one intelligent conversation with the BIOS, and otherwise blank screens. Tried a AGP video card - gave me my one encounter with the bios - but after the one time, can't even get the floppy to cycle once.

DO I have any options beside a new motherboard or computer? What's the cheapest solution to fix this beast?

Thanks, ed

A:replace AM37L in emachines?

Those older emachines seem to be having an epidemic of power supply failures. You can get a PS tester for under $15. But the motherboard can be damaged when the PS fails. You can replace the PS with any ATX model, you dont have to get the replacement from emaxhines.
