DNS Look up fail error

Q: DNS Look up fail error

This is my first post and hope I am doing it right, if this is the wrong place to post...I apologize.
quite often when opening a web site I get the error "Error 105 (net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED): Unable to resolve the server's DNS address."
If I refresh the page usually I am able to open it. I am using chrome.

Thank You

Preferred Solution: DNS Look up fail error

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: DNS Look up fail error

Try this:
Go to the start menu and type in CMD-->Right click on CMD, and press "Run as Administrator"-->type this in exactly: ipconfig /flushdns

Tell me if this works out.

I have two Windows 7 64 bit systems that worked perfectly until approx two weeks ago. They started becoming unresponsive to various websites, such as b1015.com (unable to listen live). Both computers then started having problems opening sites through google searches.

Following this, most updates on both computers fail. Downloads from the internet fail. Updating flash on one - failed. downloading .net framework update - failed.

One computer has MSE - updated and ran scan - no threats found
One computer has AVast - updated and ran scan - no threats found

Tried to download malwarebytes on the computer with avast - failed
went to XP station - downloaded to thumb drive and installed from thumb drive and ran  - no threats found

from cmd prompt -  ran sfc /scannow on both computers  -  no problems found

Can anyone give me any ideas of where to go from here to get both of these computers working properly again

The first place to start is are you getting any error messages when the updates fail? What do the messages state -- for example, do you get any error codes? Please post that information here.

hi can someone help me please, a friend of mine just upgraded her laptop from XP to VISTA ultimate all went well except for an annoying pop-up when she reboots, its a small box in the middle off her screen with the word "fAIL" in the middle, there is no other words anywhere on the box or screen, it can be closed with no ill affects, i have ran a search and destroy and all seams well there, i know it sounds like a trivial thing as on first glance its not causing a problem but i would be gratefull if someone could come up with a reason and solution for it.
thanks everyone in advance

Hi l've been having a constant to to Updates Fail, Fail Slow Windows Service, Connect a Response, etc issue with my computer and I can't seem to get out of this trouble no matter how many times I reinstall and even wipe out my hard drive I wiped out everything in my hard drive and installed Updates Fail, Slow Response, Fail to Connect to a Windows Service, etc windows Ultimate for the ' th' time and the same problems happen every single time Right after the install it seems to work fine but as I install numerous windows updates as it recommended almost forced me to 'cause it does automatically my computer becomes so slow in everything It doesn't start up the menu and such looks as if I'm in a safe mode blocky and old looking even if I manage to start it up have to wait more than min or even hr for it to respond The situation I'm having now is the pop up message saying quot Failed to connect to a windows service windows couldn't connect to the System Event Notification Service service This prevents standard user from logging on to the system As an administrative user you can review the System Event Log for details about why the service didn't respond quot Also the computer has been failing at installing several updates such as Security Update for Microsoft NET Framework on Windows and Windows Server R SP for x -based Systems Update for Windows for x -based Systems KB KB KB KB KB Because of that it sometimes ran chkdsk on the boot screen and deleted fixed files I don't think it's caused by virus 'cause I wiped out every single file in my hard drive before I reinstalled windows And obviously my hard drive is almost empty because of that Is it possible that either motherboard or hard drive is damaged and not working Or do I need a new windows OS I don't understand why I'm having the same issues even after I reinstall and delete everything in my hard drive for the times in total as I repeated many times

A:Windows XP Crash Issues - Hard Drive fail, start up fail

Hi there
So what I gather is that you now cannot start your computer up at all, due to this issue. I'm actually unsure of the problem, it sounds to me like a Virus has been at your computer. It can't really be a hardware issue I don't think... I mean it is possible that what could have been happening is that your computer (Desktop or Laptop?) is overheating and its been damaged because of that... But that wouldn't really make sense, and also having Custom Built a computer I'm sure you'd have been smart enough to install a thoroughly capable cooling system.
It sounds to me like your hard drive has been corrupted though, BSOD usually means a pretty big issue. Thats why I was thinking hardware problem to begin with, you don't often get it for Virus's.
A couple of things we need to know:
Do you have any sort of Anti-Virus installed? If so, which one? How frequently did it scan? Did you find any virus's?
Also, how far into the boot process does the computer get before it loops? Are you able to enter BIOS settings before Blue Screen comes up and it loops? What happens when it loops?
And do you have a startup / boot disk for your computer. You certainly should do.

i believe that someone posted here recently (a few days back) about the same motherboard and a very similar problem. we never ended up solving the problem as i recall but i think hos problem was out of the blue the computer wouldnt post anymore. but all of your symptoms sound like a cpu error, for whatever reason it isnt working, it is not the mobo if you have bios and you are getting that error message. it also indicates the ram, psu and bios are working.

Which drive was the error on, "E" or "I" ?
I did an error check of the I drive using my computer-properties-tools-error check. The I drive was ok but I couldn't complete the E drive because i received a message that the drive is busy & it has to be dismounted. The message said to click "here" to dismount it but the dismount failed.

Can't be software issue if the diagnostics were run outside of Windows. I'd say if the diagnostics give you an error code then the drive is likely faulty.

I basically can't get past the screen with the error. It says press del to enter setup or f1 to continue. Neither worked. I also tried tapping del and/or f2 while it was turning on. Any ideas.

Friend of mine gave me her Acer Aspire 5742z-4813 because it fails to boot and eventually asks to repair, which it doesn't. Can't enter safe-mode, either.

Only thing she's said is that her daughter installed Norton 360 a few days before it crashed.

Things I've tried:

At command prompt, ran the following with no effect: bootrec.exe /FixMbr, bootrec.exe /FixBoot, bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd, chkdsk /f E:, and finally chkskd /f /r /x.

I also entered BIOS and changed HDD mode to IDE from ACHI. No joy.

Thanks in advance, guys.

Hi All,

I had recently bought an WD Elements 1.5TB External Hard Drive. In the last few weeks it has started to slow right down. Where now it takes about 30 minutes for my PC to recognise it and it is super slow to do anything. I did a scan with HDTune Pro and it showed it had a read rate average of 2.7MB/s. And another scan using WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics showed it had a Raw Read Error Rate (Fail). It still shows up and lets me access file but its not worth it as how slow it is. I wanted to know if this is fixable and what you out there would recommend I do.

Cheers
CC (Mup)

A:WD External HDD Raw Read Error Rate Fail

Welcome to TSG
Looking into large backup drives (I also bought recently one) I found that many of them don't work too well. Smaller are better and last longer.
If you still have warranty on it, exchange it, try to put everything back first onto your hard drive as not to loose your files.
Sorry I can't help you, I wonder if it has to do with the USB ports, because depending which one it is plugged in, it works (maybe) or it doesn't even show up or it is very slow.
If you Google, you'll see, it does not matter what brand it is.

I"m trying to make a system image of my laptop hard drive onto my new 1 TB Seagate internal HD using a Rocketfish case. Some time after it starts doing a data transfer, I get a "the backup failed" red bar. I've read online things about having to delete hidden system partitions, but it's all fuzzy and I'm not about to start deleting things without knowing what I'm doing.

This move is necessary for me, since my existing laptop HD is beginning to fail and I need to move its contents asap. I did run a system check on my laptop and it found no errors.

Any help appreciated. I've researched this online til I'm blue in the face. Thanks.

A:Backup to external HD fail error 0x8078002A

Maybe there is a problem with your laptop HD which you mentioned about "is beginning to fail" and Windows can not read all the sectors , so you got this error message.
If you want to make a backup and you know your HD is beginning to fail, so do a Copy instead of backup,
Ofcourse this is not the way to solve your problem but could prevent you to lose your critical data.

There's only one error in the SFC log -

(which shouldn't cause any major problems)

...and nothing in the CheckSUR log.

There's only one minor error in the rest of the normal CBS.log file data - which we can usually ignore - but since it's

Code:
2013-10-09 08:15:35, Error CBS Failed to shred identity: Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-LanguagePack [HRESULT = 0x80070057 - E_INVALIDARG]
maybe we should take a closer look

I'd be VERY surprised if fixing the tcpmon error actually cures the problem, but we'd better make the effort first.

I'll post the fix protocol for it later.

Please post your c:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file - it may hold a clue.

Hi,

My system make : Dell XPS 14
Bios Version : A13

A:Booting error 'Checking Media [Fail]'

I managed to see third option i.e Windows Boot Manager under UEFI Boot menu. What I did was

1) I changed SATA option to AHCI from Rapid Store technology
2)Then Windows Boot Manager  appreared in UEFI menu ,moved Windows Boot Manager to first position in the list
3)Then reverted SATA to Rapid Store technology
4)Exit & save settings
5)Reboot

Worked like a charm :)

Thank you very much once again

I've been trying to upgrade to Windows 10 for a while now, but I keep getting the error code 8004100E. Windows update seems to think it is downloading fine, but when it restarts in order to configure the windows 10 update, it just boots windows 7 as normal.

I've tried deleting everything in the softwaredistribution downloads folder, but that doesn't seem to help.
I've also tried using the windows 10 media creation tool to download it and create an iso, but this also fails.

I've noticed that when windows update thinks that the upgrade has downloaded and ready to be installed that there is only about 450mb in the downloads folder of C:windows/softwaredistribution where I figure it should be closer to 3GB.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi All,
I have in the past week been unable to install updates on my computer (HP Pavilion P6000 Series), running Windows 7 64 Bit Home Edition.
I am getting error codes:- 641,   80070641,   13EC.
I belive that these errors could indicate malware infection or file corruption (Windows Installer). I have run Kaspersky Internet Security (Latest Edition) and also I-Obit Advanced System Care 8. Both these have come up clean, and the problem is still there.
Any advice or solutions would be gratefully received. As it is now 23:11 UK time I am calling it a night, but will check back in tomorrow morning.
Thanks in advance.

You're not getting the error in Safe Mode because the Automatic Updates Service is not running in Safe Mode.

Try disabling Automatic Updates from the Services console and see if you continue to get this error message.

Click Start -> Run -> enter services.msc -> navigate to Automatic Updates -> right click it -> select Properties -> under Startup Type drop down box select Disabled

Bear with me, I'm new to posting these things. I just installed a new motherboard and I get the CPU ratio change fail error every time. I have tried everything I have read on all the forums and nothing seems to work. I have swapped the battery, selected and saved the optimized CMOS settings, reset the CMOS, swapped the ram. Everything I've tried fails. All I can get is the Windows start screen for a split second. I hope someone has some insight for me.
Here are my relevant system specs: (as far as I know)
Biostar P4M80-M4 motherboard
SL6VV Celeron processor 2.6Ghz (Northwood)
512MB-DDR PC333 ram
ATX 250W power supply

Thanks

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Your hard drive will have all the drivers on it for your old mobo and won`t work with the new mobo.

You can try doing a windows repair as per this thread HERE.

If that doesn`t work, you may have to consider a format and reinstall.

I have Windows 7 Home edition; Microsoft updates are problematic, have had to download individually to get important security updates installed, not all have installed, computer takes ages to create a Restore point and then does not always succeed in reconfiguring at reboot after install. Got error code 643, Have Norton 360, tried downloading the Norton Power Eraser but this failed, and got error code 0x80070005, n44, n66.

Can anyone help? Spent last two days trying to install MS security updates one by one and the last two simply will not install.

A:Windows 7 updates fail, error code 643

Download and install Malwarebytes, get it up to date, and do a scan.  When the scan finishes, click Quarantine all.  After that boot to Safe Mode and do a full system scan with your antivirus.

If you still have problems after that, do this.
Please download and run Speccy.  After running it click File -> Publish snapshot... Copy and paste the link it gives you into your next post.  Then download minitoolbox and run it with the following boxes checked:
List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions, and Memory size
List Minidump files
Copy the resulting log and paste into a reply here.

Good luck.

What started as Windows Updates hanging leaking memory and spiking CPU usage has now turned into an insane ordeal that after countless hours of troubleshooting I've not been able to pinpoint the source of I fixed the hanging issue by resetting the update components but that doesn't do a lot of good when they still fail to install anyways No matter what KB I'm trying to install or even non-KB things like C redists I am consistently greeted by an quot Update was not installed quot message at the mark with a x FFFF error cited as the reason sfc scannow found nothing in need of repair sans winsxs mfc dll's that have been missing since before I installed SP and haven't caused me any issues via their all fail 0x8000FFFF unexpected to .MSU's install and error with Any absence in the past All that CheckSUR found was an issue with KB a security fix for Internet Explorer which not only is unlikely to be the culprit but Any and all .MSU's fail to install with 0x8000FFFF unexpected error is also inconsequential to me as a Chrome user Running the Windows Update Troubleshooter told me it had a x error though after some attempted fixes it seems to now have a x error instead This error also appeared alongside x FFFF after attempting to install updates via Windows Updater instead of standalone msu's This was both after I fixed the hanging issue and encountered x FFFF on its own Also worth mentioning as I'm fairly certain it's related since it started happening at the same time is that every administrator prompt lists the publisher as Unknown instead of Microsoft No amount of searching these error codes has come up with any concrete answers or solutions so I'm hoping you fine folks here could help me get to the bottom of this Preferably before the th as I've avoided telemetry updates prior to this issue and would like to install Win on a separate harddrive while it's still free but it's really not the end of the world if I miss out

For starters:

At work we start all repairs with a set of diagnostics. Often they find problems that weren't even expected. It's a waste of time to try to fix software on a system that has hardware problems.
Please try these free diagnostics for starters: Initial Hardware Diagnostics
Also, please ensure that you have ALL available Windows Updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

If the system is still under warranty, I'd suggest having it repaired under warranty.

The CheckSUR error is a fairly major one! Unless we get lucky, the chances are that you'll have to do a repair install to fix this.

KB 2518869, KB2572077, KB2633873, KB2656356 repeatedly fail to install with errors 800B0100 and 80070308.

These four security patches have repeatedly failed to install since 23 March.
Win 7 SP1 was installed on 21 March 2012

I have run the Microsoft FixIt and the System Update Readiness Tool (KB947821) but no change.

Looking for any guidance on how to install these four updates.

Some background info...

Running Win7 Prof 64 bit SP1
The PC is 2+ years old (probably mid 2010)
Win7 was installed from scratch on the PC as new
IE9 was installed on 9 Feb 2012
Chrome and Firefox are both installed
MSE is installed

No other security/anti-virus tools have ever been installed

No registry cleaners have ever been used.

Thread started here (and the BSOD's should now be resolved: Unknown BSOD on Mother-in-laws system

I had 2 problems in that thread, the second led me through a Google search back to this forum in another thread here: Windows Check for updates keeps running-all installation/updates fail

After completing the steps in post 83, the issue is now worse. Instead of getting to 18% of a elevated scannow, it goes straight to "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

I have tried "Microsoft's System Update Readiness Tool" as advised here: Fix Windows Update and other problems with Microsoft's System Update Readiness Tool | Wilders Security Forums

I have the CBS log attached.

I have tried the solution here, however the key exists: Windows Modules Installer Error:126 - Microsoft Community

I have run Tweaking.com - Windows Repair to reset permissions, this hasn't helped.

Suggestions please.

Cheers

I am randomly getting a 0xc00000e error on startup for Windows, and looking at the BIOS after this happens, the BIOS does not see my Western Digital drive. However, after exiting the BIOS, the computer will usually boot. Is this a sign of the drive failing?

I have been attempting to upgrade windows 10 pro, from version 10240 to version 1607 (anniversary update). It looks like I have been stuck on 10240 so some time. I have tried both the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant and the media creation tool (ISO - both from the HDD and bootable USB). I get to 96% and, boom, every time it resets and restores my system to where it was before the upgrade started. The error I get is as follows:
0x8007042B - 0x4001E
The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during PRE_OOBE operation.
I have searched for an answer and haven't found one. I have tried to trouble shoot it as best I can by unplugging everything but my keyboard/mouse, updated chipset, etc.. MS techs haven't been much help. Any thoughts? I would rather not have to nuke the system. I hate having to reinstall programs (adobe is the worst). Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Hello,

I am having 7 Windows updates fail to install a system. All 7 of them come back with error 0x800f0900. The problematic updates are as follows:

(kb3000483)
(kb3031432)
(kb3004375)
(kb3097966)
(kb3060716)
(kb3033929)
(kb3071756)

I have:

1. Ran SURT
2. Ran the SFC Scan
3. Error is as follows: windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800f0900: security update for windows 7 for x64-based systems (kb3097966).
Note: All 7 give the same message.
4. Zip of CBS is attached, however, I had to remove most of the CAB files that were in the CBS folder, due to the large file size. If the other files are necessary, please let me know how I can get them to you.

CBS.zip

Thank you!

I changed my CMOS battery and replaced my WiFi card, then booted my computer and got this:

Floppy disk(s) fail (40)

It happens every time I start up now. I can press F1 and it will continue booting. I have a Shuttle AN35 Ultra motherboard with AwardBIOS v6.00PG. I don't have a floppy drive and I don't have it set anywhere in the boot order (it's just HDD-0, then CD-ROM and nothing else).

What in the world did I do?

EDIT: by the way, changing the battery reset all the settings, but I set all of them back again.

The message ?Fail to load module C:\Users\Ron Wolpa\AppData\Local\Icdrsoft\hpboidps.DLL? pops up just after Win 8 starts up.
It started to happen after AVG anti virus cleaned a possible threaten.
I was about to remove from registry then , before doing stupid things , I made up my mind to post a message here ; it is located @ HKEY_CURRENT_USER > SOFTWARE > MICROSOFT > WINDOWS > CURRENT VERSION > RUN under the name ICDRSOFT and data : regsvr32.exe "C:\Users\Ron Wolpa\AppData\Local\Icdrsoft\hpboidps.DLL".
If deleting from registry is not the solution what else can be done ?
Thank you for your support.

I tried updating Windows 7 and got this Error: Code 9C47.

My cbs log is attached to this post.

Thanks for any help, appreciated.

Odd - your SFC scan doesn't appear to have complete properly, either, although it does seem to have fixed one minor file error.

I have a suspicion I know what may be the problem - this may help isolate the cause....

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

Er No!!

Is the USB controller recognised? are there any drivers already installed? if so can you uninstall them

Can you turn USB 3 off in the BIOS? if yes do it, start your PC switch off the PC switch USB 3 back on again and try again

You could try using CCleaner both normal clean and registry don't forget to make a registry backup and then try installing it again
I hope this helps

"Edit" have a look here there are other drivers that I believe should work if you can install them; win 7 doesn't recognize NEC usb 3.0 driver

I recently used the built in restore provided by gateway, I picked the option to restore to factory defaults and save my data.

Upon attempting to apply the updates I am getting error code 80072F8F which states that there is an issue with time the machine not being correct. However, that is not the situation and the time is correct.

Next I tried to use the Microsoft repair update tool however it failed to run giving me the same error.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Your CBS logfiles are generating at a very high speed - and it's therefore likely that you have a huge amount of corruption.
There is no CheckSUR data in your upload - either you uploaded before it ran, or it failed before being able to generate a log.

please try again......

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and attach it to your reply.

Did the best I could reading the posting rules for the forum and the Update forums but please let me know if there's anything else I need to do I attached a screenshot of the Update that has failed to load for months now and the error code it gave me both are also in the post title I was unable to download the SURT as I didn't see the correct one for my system and I wouldn't want to download the wrong one For this reason I attached a screenshot of my system spec s so if I need this for you - - Fail 800B0100 Update Error: KB2472599 Windows to help me you can let me know which to download Also following the links on the Update posting rules took me to this Windows Update Fail - KB2472599 - Error: 800B0100 link I'm fairly certain my system is x based could be wrong which I don't see as an option System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows Windows Vista Windows Server R and Windows Server Also I'm not sure it helps but I saw that someone had had the Windows Update Fail - KB2472599 - Error: 800B0100 same Update fail but with different error code I doubt it helps but just in case here's a link to his thread KB won't install I did not follow those directions I just thought I'd mention that it had been on here before This has been a problem for a long time now that I've been ignoring and when I got annoyed with it I found this site I followed all steps in the Update posting guide except the aforementioned st but let me know if there's any other information needed Hopefully someone can help me out thanks so much in advance

Can you run this FixIt in aggressive mode please?
You receive a "0x80070002" or "0x80070003" error code after you download an update from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or from Windows Server Update Services
Then try updating and post the logs if it fails - which is shouldn't

Hi, first time poster here.  I work for a composer managing/troubleshooting his computers.  One of them recently started failing to reboot and I can't even get into Safemode.  Trying to system restore fails with the error 0x800700b7.  I read a few other threads having the same issue resolved by the Farbar Recovery scan then fix.  I downloaded FRST64.exe, put it on a USB stick, ran it and created the attached FRST.txt log.  Can someone help me with a Fixlist.txt solution as well?

Many many many thanks in advance!

A:Win 7 crash - SP1 fail - repair install fail

Last night I stumbled on to something that solved my inability to perform a repair reinstall of Win7 Ultimate. Keep in mind, my machine would not boot and that I had to restore my system from an image after none of the repair techniques would solve the problem. After restoring from the image I was able to boot up, but still could not perform a repair reinstall of Win7. Also, sfc still identified that there were corrupt files it could not repair.

I started to suspect something hardware related like mobo, RAM, or BIOS - not for any deep technical reason, just that nothing else seemed to work. I read something about 'bad RAM' or damaged RAM slots potentially causing problems. I pulled out 3 of the 4 1 GB Corsair CM2X1024-6400 sticks and ran a repair install.

The reinstall of Win7 Ultimate worked fine, no hitches. When I ran sfc after it indicated no problems. The automatic update downloaded a ton of MS files - all installed without a problem (I still haven't seen SP1 - and I not sure I'll try to install it yet, if it does show up.)

I'm going to reinstall the RAM one stick at a time and run memory diagnostics. I'd like to understand what happened. It's important for me to find out if it's a back stick, a bad socket, or something to do with mobo. Any suggestions or insights would be greatly appreciated.

One specific question: If I have to build a new computer - new mobo, cpu, and case - can I just rebuild the OS and apps from an image? The current computer is a Dell Inspiron 531. The original OS was preloaded Vista that was later upgraded to Win7 Ultimate.

I don't think those a really errors, only warnings. Windows is just telling you about all the things that can't be started in safe-mode. I'm 50% sure that if you boot into safe-mode on any computer you'll see a whole bunch of those warnings in the event viewer.

Wanted to report to the world that I was getting this failure during automatic updates for Windows XP Home edition.

After a day of trying to follow the Microsoft suggestions, I finally tried to execute the individual updates manually. When doing so, I had an error copying the file c:\.....\branches.inf.

I found a post on this site by MOXYLL (http://www.techsupportforum.com/show...t=branches.inf) in which she suggested changing the following file to read/write from read only:
c:\windows\inf\branches.inf.

Guess what?!?! It worked!! All my Windows Update failures went away.

Now if I could somehow reclaim my day! ... ARGH!

Hope this helps some frantic frustrated person out there!

Best,
Dan

download TFC by Old Timer TFC - Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer - Geeks to Go Forums and save it to your desktop.
Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista/Windows 7 right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.

TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder. It also cleans out the %systemroot%\temp folder and checks for .tmp files in the %systemdrive% root folder, %systemroot%, and the system32 folder (both 32bit and 64bit on 64bit OSs). It shows the amount removed for each location found (in bytes) and the total removed (in MB). Before running, it will stop Explorer and all other running apps. When finished, a reboot is required the user must reboot to finish clearing any in-use temp files.
