Hello everyone I'm new here but I have a problem and need some help. I have a Dell latitude D505 when I turn it on I get a white screen that says:

Any thought? Thanks in advance....

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Welcome to TSG forums.
Try clicking on use the Win key + R. type in command (or cmd) then type in "ipconfig /all" without the ". also not a space between the g&/. Next type in ipconfig /flushdns. see if this helps.
You might also clean your temporary ie files:
Open IE click on tools>internet options. Under the general tab open browsing history, view files. When that open click on edtit>select all, (this highlights the list) then click on file>delete.

I attempted to start up my dell this morning, and it's been a frustrating experience ever since. Each time I hit the power button, the power light and hard drive lights come on for only a couple of seconds, and then it shuts off completely. I have looked at other threads similar to this topic and have also tried some things I've read to no avail. I took the battery out and it still does the same thing when plugged directly into the wall. Your help or any input is greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

A:My Dell Latitude D505 will not stay on

Usual cause is hard drive failure. How old is the drive. Second caus in that dell is memory failure. Others are too little, or dried out thermal past, failing modem (even if not in use), and plain ol dust, dirt, and hair plugging cooling channels.

Hello there the following message keeps coming up on my laptop

The instruction at "0x5ba06ela" referenced memory at "0x5ba06ela". The required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status of "0xc000009c".

The laptop is slower than normal. Everything else seems to work apart from the internet and msn messenger, which will load up to begin with, but is slow, but then when something is typed into google or i put my information into msn messenger to log on it freezes and says they are not responding to send error report.

I have not downloaded anything different onto my laptop or made any changes that i am aware of.

I would really appreciate your help please.

Thank you

A:Dell Latitude D505 I/O error message coming up?

Test your memory.

Download this file, unzip it to a folder of choice, there will be an ISO file, burn this to a CD as an ISO (Image)

Boot from the CD you made and let the memory test run for a couple hours, see if you get memory test errors, if you do you have a bad memory module that needs replaced.

I want to install an SSD into my Dell Latitude D505 14" laptop, but I'm not sure if it will fit. I don't want to get a 128GB one, that's just longer I'll have to wait to save money for. My Dell laptop currently has a 40GB Hard Disk Drive.

Note: Don't go saying 'Upgrade laptops' or anything like that. I don't want to hear about it. I'm aware of how old this laptop is, about 8 years to be exact.

Hello. My dell latitude D505 laptop was making a loud winding noise underneath(facing me) the left side closest to the screen. Underneath that location is a fan. Why it was making such a loud winding noise, It sounded similar to an old tape player rewinding a cassette. I don't know but I do know it's never done that before.

Does anyone know what this could be and is it safe to use my computer even though the winding noise stopped? It lasted for at least a few hours, then suddenly stopped.

Thank you.

A:My Dell Latitude D505 laptop was making strange winding sound

Is it warm or hot in that location? It's either the HDD or CPU Fan?
If it's the CPU Fan that needs to be replaced.
If it's the HDD then backup your data or clone the HDD as the HDD is starting to go.
Normally if it's the HDD it will make clunking noises.

Whoever reinstalled Windows for you probably formatted the entire disk, wiping out the Dell recovery partition. Never mind - you don't need it for just one problem.

Whilst opening a page in Firefox or IE, right click the Taskbar and click on Task Manager. Click the Processes tab and then the box at the head of the column marked CPU. That should bring to the top, the process using the most resources so note which those are and post the details back here.

I have got two laptops Dell Latitude D600 and Latitude D505,,,when I tried to configure wireless card for D505 at home to recognize the ADSL Linksys WAG354G it can not recognize it.

But I have got no problem with D600,,,,,this is proof that there is no problem with ADSL router.

If I took the same laptop (D505) to work, the wireless card can recognize the Access Point at work (Nortel),,,,this is proof that there is no problem with the driver of wireless card,,,if there is problem with the wireless's driver it should not have worked with AP at work.

If F12 does not get you into the Diagnostic partition on the hard drive do you have the Dell drivers and utilities disk the hard drive diagnostic can be run from the disk.

Or you could try running SeaTools for Dos which you D/L burn to a disk and boot from to check the hard drive.

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums, jpgundersen!

I am typing this on my Dell D505 with 7 Home Premium. I am using the graphics driver for Vista from the Vista installation DVD. Here is a link to another post where you might get the file if you do not have the Vista DVD:

To install this driver, create a new folder on the C: drive
and copy these files to the Dell folder

Right click on the desktop and open Screen Resolution

Click on Advanced settings, then Properties

Select the Drivers tab, then Update Driver

Select Browse my computer

and browse to C:\Dell

Windows 7 should update the video driver from this file.

Before you reboot, according to the link posted at the top of this post,
you should go back to this screen and select "List all Modes"

Select resolution 1024 X 768 at 256 colors.

Reboot your computer and set your screen resolution to 32 bit colors.

Please let us know if this works OK for you?

I am facing unique problem. I have a Dell Latitude D505 which used to work fine till last week. Since then it give wierd problem

1. it does not boot when Main batterry is inserted.
2. If the battery is taken out, then it can boot on the Secondary battery or AC supply
3. after starting the machine, if I insert battery the system hangs.
4. Secondary battery does not get recharged when inserted in the laptop.

How can I fix the problem?

A:Dell D505 - does not boot when Main batterry is inserted.

this situation tells us, that your battery is dead. the explanation is: most likely the bq8020 isn't responding via SMbus, so the KBC hangs up and the notebook hangs up too. however you can apply a "theurapetic methods" like update your bios and EC/KBC firmware. of course you sholud do that actions WITHOUT main battery. 10% chance that it will helps.

First things first - welcome to BC !
Does this laptop have a recovery partition built in and do you have access, even if it is a friend's, to another computer ?
I think you have reached the stage where, if you are going to continue with XP (but see all the various warnings about MS support for XP ending next month) you are going to have to do a system rebuild. If you decide to change operating systems you will effectively be doing that anyway.
But FIRST, you need to recover your data from this computer. Probably as simple a way as any is to use a lightweight Linux like Puppy together with an external USB hard drive. Linux Puppy creates a bootable disc which you can then use to copy data to the external hard drive. You can get Puppy from here, along with instructions on how to use it :-
Note that the download is an .ISO file and you will need something like ImageBurn to turn the downloaded file into a usable and bootable disc. It is very easy to use and makes no permanent changes to your existing OS. I have used it several times very successfully to salvage data.
Once you have saved your data, you can then go on either to rebuild your XP or install a different OS. The simplest way to re-set your computer would be if it has a recovery partition. This will re-set it to the state it came from the manufacturer's in. If you have a COA attached to your computer (the MS activation code, which should be on a sticker somewhere) then you can use any XP install disc that is the same version as the one you have already installed. If you decide you don't wish to re-install XP, then your choices are reasonably wide open.
Your laptop is fairly old, and may well not run either Win 7 or 8. You can check here, if you can get it to start :
If it won't run the newer Windows systems, then you are probably going to have to go with one flavour or other of Linux. Take a look in the Linux section on BC for opinions and advice.

Your XP CD is your rescue CD. You can slipstream the drivers your product key and SP3 into your Windows CD with nLIte Once you have created your new SP3 disc, then boot off of disc and get to the Partition information. Delete the previous partition, Create a new partition, Format the Partition NTFS, Install Windows. Once that is complete, check in Device Manager for any drivers you missed, then go to Windows Update, you will probably need to install all of the .Net Frameworks as they are not included in the SP's.

Joseph mate best leave as is after all it was made to function as it came. Now for the compound and copper shim personally I would not bother with the copper shim I can see no good reason for it the dual pipe again if it was made to work with one pipe then leave alone.

It is better if you renew the compound using a decent cleaner and compound and I can recommend these for that job

Arctic Silver Incorporated - ArctiClean for thorough cleaning and preparation and Arctic Silver Incorporated - Arctic Silver 5 for the compound.

Now it depends on who you listen to but I always use these products and after the old compound is thoroughly cleaned off and the surfaces prepped I spread the compound very thinly and across the both entire surface of the CPU and the heatsink with my finger inside a vinyl or latex glove and then place a rice grain sized piece of compound on the CPU and replace the heatsink. If you touch the surfaces after clean and prep then redo it.

While you are in there do make sure the fan and the radiator are really spotless and I sometimes relube the fan bearings to make sure the fan is running at full tilt when needed.

A:Dell D505 beeps twice and writes "Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run setup..."

Some component of the hardware is bad... could be anything... and the beep codes help tell what it is. There is a list of beep codes posted by tipstir, I believe, elsewhere on this TechSpot site.

Have you tried booting to SAFE MODE by repeately depressing the <F8> key as soon as you depress the power button? If it boots to SAFE MODE you know it is repairable.

Otherwise, trouble shoot for power supply failure, hard drive failure, cpu fan failing, modem or ethernet socket, video graphics card... ore even sound card... any defective component can cause an alert.
Or it could be overheating due to lint, dirt, dust in the fan or cooling channels.
When you try booting without the HDD, at least put a bootable CD into the optical drive.
Good luck. Let us know your diagnosis.

Pretty much what the title says - Dell's new, recently-released ControlVault driver (version A19) does not successfully install on a Dell Latitude E6330.  I followed the driver installation order from the "Dell Business Client Re-Image 'How-To' Guide" and installed the Dell ControlVault driver last.  It did not work.
Attached is a screenshot of what I got, and the Windows Installer log.

I installed Windows 7 64-bit on my Latitude E6400. I cannot seem to find any way to install Dell Control Point. I got the Driver Pack to install. I found one download of Security Manager that worked, but I would like the Power Manager one.

I've looked on this forum a few times and any links I click on just redirect me to the Drivers and Downloads page. I get errors saying that my service pack is not supported.....I'm on Windows 7 Service Pack 1. I also got some 32-bit errors, but that's my fault for downloading the 32-bit version.

Does anybody have a link to the full Dell Control Point package (Power Manager, Connection Manager, Security Manager) that will work on 64-bit Windows 7?

A:(Dell Latitude E6400) Dell Control Point on Windows 7 64-bit

Here is a good article on reimaging the Latitude E6400
The Win 7  Control Point System Manager files are a bit tricky to find, but they can be downloaded from the following link.
This should help if you have installed the correct drivers in the correct order.

and which is newer

A:which is better dell latitude e5440 or dell latiude e6430

The E6430 has a metal case and is more robust, but uses an older CPU and chipset.
The E5440 is a plainer chassis with a newer generation CPU and chipset.
The E6440 is the concurrent update to the E5440.
There are too many possible configurations to definitively say which is better -- it depends on the CPU, GPU, etc. in the specific model (or that you choose when you order one, but since the E6430 isn't a current model,  you may be looking at used systems).

I own a Dell Latitude E6430.   I am looking for a Dell Companion 12000mAh or 18000mAh type of device to power and charge my Dell Lattitude E6430 when I am traveling (no outlet available).   When I view the compatibility list for both the Dell Companion 12000mAh and the 18000mAh I don't see the Dell Latitude E6430 in either list.  I went and purchased the 12000mAh and I am attempting to use this to charge and power my Dell Latitude E6430.  It powers my Dell Laptop for about a minute and then quits.   Is there a solution for this problem?   And/or is there another Dell Companion type device that I can purchase that is listed as 100% compatible with the Dell Latitude E6430?   I would like to either get this solution working or purchase the product that is listed as 100% compatible.

Thats a normal problem for those keyboards. You could probably have gotten those keys working again by reseating the cable from the motherboard to the keyboard. Now it sounds like you need a new keyboard. You can probably get one from Dell or possibly find a used one from ebay. Replacements can also be found online like this.

HERE is the Dell Lattitude XT drivers. They have Win 7 64 bit and 32 bit drivers. Select the OS bit you have.

Keep in mind the correct and required install sequence for a Dell (and many others) is (1) Install Windows (2) Install Dell Laptop System Software (3) Install motherboard chipset drivers (4) Install device drivers including video, sound, ethernet, etc.

Hi, I have just brought a Dell Latitude CPx back from the dead and it is working wonderfully apart from the fact that the Function (FN) keys don't 'function'.
Any ideas please?

A:Dell Latitude CPx

Humm... old.

When you say you brought it back from the dead, how so? Did you have a Dell recovery disk, or did you install an OS from a box into it? Was the keyboard okay before hand, or was it part of the reason for it being DOA originally?

The CPx series were one of those 'semi'-Dell machines, since the same notebook could be purchased in a number of liveries, including HP and Gateway (your machine looks exactly like my Solo 1400). If you loaded an operating system into it that wasn't from a recovery disk, then you probably need to download the drivers from the Dell website into it. Otherwise, the keyboad may be out of sorts, and may need replacing.

If you can find the service tag number (on Dell laptops, they tend to be on a thin white label and are only 6 to 8 digits long), you can punch it in here ( to find out what was on this beastie originally, and what can be downloaded to it.

A:Old Dell Latitude XPi - very hot

If your new hard drive is higher RPM than the old drive, then that would explain the heat. Your old drive was probably 4500 RPM, and the new one 5400 or 7200. If that is true, there's not much you can do about it short of buying a new drive.

My daughter asked me to fix her Dell Latitude cpi which she uses for her college work. That was the easy bit it was a dodgy on/off button. Then she asked me to get it connected to the internet through her cable modem. I thought that would be easy too but I have spent hours on the internet trying to find what sort of adapter is needed because there is no direct socket connection to fit the modem. I would be eternally grateful for any help you can offer and it would make me look good in my daughter's eyes.

Sorry to be so long answering, ive been a bit busy, usual cause is faulty memory chips or ones that have just worked loose, if you have 2 chips try either in DImm1 socket and see if it works, failing that the board is going bad, do an Ebay search on the board and see what it costs to replace it.

A friend of mine gave me a Dell Latitude C640 to check out. It looks like a decent clean laptop and it sounds that it's going to boot up but after it gets to the Dell and Windows XP screens, it immediately goes to the "Windows did not start successfully" screen and gives me the option of starting windows normally, going to safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, or last known good configuration.

Unfortunately, no matter what I choose, it always comes back to that "Windows did not start successfully" screen. I thought maybe the OS was corrupted, so I tried repairing it or even just reinstalling the OS from CD but nothing works. I'm not sure if it's a hardware problem or an OS problem.

Any one have any idea on what the problem is?

I have just bought a Dell Latitude LS laptop (used) and I want to upgrade the RAM. It only has 128 MB. How do I take it apart and put more RAM in and where can I get the RAM cheap? Also, would it be possible to upgrade the processor eventualy? (it has a pentiun III as of right now).

A:Dell Latitude LS Laptop Help

You can go to Dell support, enter your notebook model or identification code and navigate to replace hardware for a guide on replaceing the memory. If you go to system specs on the same site, it will tell you what kind of memory it uses and how much it will hold . .

You can also use the Memory Configuration at to get the same info. Dell's do not handle cheap memory well so stick with Crucial . . price is competitive and they gurantee it will work in the notebook.

Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to upgrade processors on todays notebooks . . dammit! You can upgrade memory and hard drive but nothing else.

Nothing on the screen. When I try to turn it on without being plugged in, the power light blinks and screen still black. A:dell latitude d620

No. Only a version from Dell will work with his product key. And the one found by Jelly Bean is the wrong one - it is used on all Dell machines of that model and won't reinstall from the Dell disk. You need to use the number on the sticker on the machine. If his recovery partition is still there, restore using that.

then before you do anything with your computer you need to get a lot more RAM

you probably need to provide a bit more info on your computer to determine if this is a good idea to upgrade if this laptop is really old.

Upon pressing the start button, the green 'power' light comes on and the 'disk' light, (this is what I call it, it looks like a stack of platters, and is located right beside the power light) comes on very briefly, maybe 1.5 secs and then goes off. A:Dell Latitude d400

Hi jkswimmer and welcome to Vista Forums

Sorry, but I don't recommend this. With a desktop system, then possibly. However, with laptops things are much more complicated. Power consumption and heat dissipation are the greatest concern and they are optimised for the current processor in the system. A replacement processor, if it is not identical, might have different power and thermal characteristics, in which case the system would fail to keep it within its normal working range. In addition to that, simply accessing the processor on a laptop is much more complicated than simply removing the side panel as you would on a desktop. You literally have to strip the laptop right down, being carefull not to lose the various small screws or damage the wiring and its connectors. And then, of course, you will need to repeat the procedure in reverse to reassemble it.
Personally, I would leave your laptop as it is, with one exception. To improve its performance, make sure that you have installed the maximum amount of memory that it supports (see manual for details).

A:Dell Latitude 600 cannot boot up

" unmountable_boot_volume""Failed the DST Short Status test""Log contains previous errors"Put those 3 statements together & it's very likely your hard drive has failed. Hopefully you have backup copies of any important data because you may not be able to recover it. Try running a diagnostics test to confirm the hard drive's status. edited by riider

I got a dell latitude e6430 around a year ago as a present and since yesterday (7/09/14) I couldn't get on it. It starts but it keeps going on startup repair (I've done this around 5 times) and the message that comes up with...

"if you have recently attached a device to this computer, such as a camera or portable music player, remove it and restart your computer. If you continue to see this message, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance"

I click finish and still when I turn it on again it doesn't work. I've attached my photo memory card but I done it ages ago with no problem and nothing new has been attached.

If someone knows how to fix it I would be so grateful

this is about a laptop, a classmate of mine, is selling, which reads "Dell Latitude 7400" and my friend is planning to buy that. but i cant find it over the net! i've tried searching with the model number but the search returns absolutely no result about it. [ finds other 7400s ] it has a little "centrino 2" sticker on it. so could it be very new or sth to be online?

A:Dell Latitude 7400

Are you sure it's not a Latitude V740 or E6400? There is no "7400" model.

I'm looking into buying an affordable small travel notebook/laptop. My budget is fairly low, only consisting of a few hundred Dollars.
I have found this specification list from a local used store:
I haven't found any new condition sellers so far. Also, a few questions I had were:
- Is this notebook capable of running Windows 10?
- As I'm a designer, can this notebook run Photoshop cloud edition?
- Is shipping notebooks overseas possible and safe?
it is really hard for me to determine what's wise or not. Because I'm inexperienced in the hardware field.

A:DELL Latitude E6400

This is a nice reliable computer. Unfortunately, there are no Windows 10 drivers available for download. That does not mean it may not run it. It is that Dell did not verify this computer to run Windows 10 and did not create any drivers.
Looking at the system requirements to run Photoshop Cloud software; the computer meets the requirements.
As far as shipping notebooks overseas it should be fine as long as it is packaged well toh avoid being damaged.
Dell has some reasonable priced laptops that may meet your budget located on our Dell Outlet website below., Even with Windows 10.

Also, check our sales site in the section labeled "Deals" at the link below. Plus, they come with warranties.,  **Do an internet search for discount coupons on Dell Computers**

Well its like this, all is not good at this point !!!!!!!
1: can't boot up from disk , all I get is it asking for the location of the COMMAND.COM INTERPRETER
2: Once I do get it to boot what do I need to get dos to recognize the external CD ROM that is connect to the USB port, so that I am able to install Win XP.
3: Or is there another way to connect the external ROM to the laptop rather than using the usb port.

Your help on this matter would be greatly accepted.
cheers CODAN

Howdy codan...

You might try here Bootdisk, download the XP boot disks, once downloaded, double click on the downloaded file to create the floppies...

My laptop connected perfectly months ago to my home wireless network. Then my son borrowed it to game on and changed settings to connect to his pc as a monitor or something. When he gave it back, i can click and see my home wireless listed, however, when I click connect it will not connect. The only way I can connect is by connecting an ethernet. I am disabled so sitting on the floor is getting hard. Can anyone help me get back to wireless again?
Yes, the wireless switch is slid on, on the side.
Yes, i have rebooted.
I have tried to restore to a previous point, however it only shows 2 recent dates....
Thanks for your help in advance.

A:Dell Latitude D630

First you need to contact that son of yours and give him a bit of your mind after he tells you what he changed.
He should come back and undo those changes.

Can you see the network name being listed in the wireless drop down?
Or any network in the drop down listing?

I have a Dell Latitude D520 Laptop and am having problems with the display... I am running Windows XP SP3. When I switch the Laptop on all starts fine and all the Icons appear as they should. However, after approx 5 mins the Display goes off and no matter what I do I can't get it to come back on. After Restart the same thing happens. I don't think this is a Software Issue as it all starts as it should and the problem persists after I've tried re installing Windows onto it. When the screen Dims it is still possible to see everything very dimly in the background.

Any help would be greatly appreciated????

A:Dell Latitude D520 HELP!!!!

Is the power adapter attached when this happens? Laptops by default dim after 5 minutes of inactivity when the power adapter is not attached to save power but it should come back on by either pressing the power button once, or tapping the Enter key. Is the battery being recharged when the power adapter is attached? You can try this without the battery in, and just using the Power Adapter to test if the battery is the problem.
You can adjust the power settings by right clicking a blank space on the desktop/Properties/Screen Save/Power. You can change the time and what the power button does. (ex) pressing power button once to wake from sleep etc.

I had to reinstall windows xp professional home edition on a Dell Latitude D800. It works perfectly for the moment. The instant I try to install netzero dial up internet it starts freezing and I can't even get it to connect to the internet. When I cancel out of the netzero install/setup, it will still freeze just by clicking on something as simple as the start menu. I have reinstalled windows a few times, and every time I get the same result. Does anyone know what could be causing it to do that? Is it possible that the xp professional home edition is too much for the laptop to handle? Or is it that I might not have all the drivers installed that I need? Any help is greatly appreciated.

A:Dell Latitude D800

Hi Cappi106, you said you reinstalled XP but did you formatt it first? You also say as soon as you try to install.............the software, have you first installed all of your drivers? e.g. audio, video and network drivers? Here is the link to Dell, you will have to go through and find what you need.
