I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am in quite a situation. I have a Toshiba external hard drive that I bought a couple years ago, but had hardly used until the last couple months. Well today it suddenly stopped working and I have tons of important stuff on it. Is there any way possible I can retrieve all of the stuff on it? I usually use it with my Gateway Laptop that runs Windows XP Home and have never had trouble with it before. I hope someone can help me at least get the stuff off of it.

Hi,

I have an external hard drive that has stopped working......

The hard drive is a laptop hard drive that has a small attachment on it so I can plug a usb in to it, this small attachment has a light on, green usually means it's working normally.....

When I plug the hard drive in to the USB, the stays constant amber and i can hear the drive spinning, the drive spins for around 10 seconds then stops then does the same again, after a few attempts at this the drive then doesn't spin at all and the light stays constant green but the drive isn't showing on the laptop.

Any suggestions?

Many Thanks

Andrew

Test on another PC. If it's not recognized on both PC's, I'd suspect a faulty HDD or the cable/adapter.

A:IOMEGA external hard drive has just stopped working

Have you tried the drive in another computer?
Do you have any other external drives or USB devices and do they work ok?
What OS are you running?

I would definitely recommend taking the drive to a shop or tech to have a look, if you aren't familiar with data recovery.

The problem could be a corrupt partition table, or other data related - not physical, problem. A reformat will "fix" your drive, but you will lose data. In situations like these, taking the drive to an experienced person will be the best option to avoid making matters "worse", and as a worse case scenario, data recovery software should get your most if not all of your data back.

Most likely, the integrity of the drive has been affected, but the drive itself still holds the data.

It shows up as drive e in the device management. I have assigned another drive letter but with no success. I have removed and reinstalled with no success. It just will not show up in the my computer part. The drive makes no noise and the light does not flash but is receiving power. When I removed the item it did reinstall again no joy. I am now worrying as I have important data on it. My virus scanner also recognises the device and when I run this it finds nothing to scan. Can anyone help?

A:Iomega Prestige external hard drive stopped working

Use the Disk Manager to view the partition - - there should be some info if you click on the device. If not, the partition damaged.

Alright I have a whole bunch of my music and videos on my external hard drive and I got a new Dell XPS yesterday I had been using my external hard drive just fine for the past - yeas now with different laptops working fine I plugged it yesterday to transfer all my music to my new computer and it seemed to be working fine There was an error as the copy rate External Local -- won't open Disk as only working, shows drive hard stopped up slowwed so I decided to delete and try again I did that about times and then decided to just copy the music album by album Eventually I don External hard drive stopped working, only shows up as Local Disk -- won't open t know how it ended up happening instead of the Hard Drive coming up as Seagate on the My Computer Tab it started showing up as Local Disk J on my Dell and Local Disk E on my laptop now It doesn t matter where I plug it in Not only that it won t open when I try to open it It will get loaded and then just pause and stop responding I m completely lost My hard drive is Seagate GB nbsp

A:External hard drive stopped working, only shows up as Local Disk -- won't open

Hi, first I would run the Seagate diagnostics to check the hard drive is still healthy following this guide.

Identify the make of your hard drive and then use one of the links below to get the manufacturers diagnostic for ISO CD. Burn the image file to a CD, boot the PC with the disc in the drive and run the diagnostics. You first need to set the CD drive to 1st in the boot order in the Bios setup.

If you do not have an image burner use this free software to make the CD.

If you have a Toshiba hard drive I would suggest the use of the diagnostics from the Seagate link as this will work on all makes of drive and on any OS.Click to expand...

It sounds likely that the circuitry in the drive enclosure is failing (or the drive), if the test won't run then remove the drive from the enclosure and purchase a USB Hard Drive adapter, or use the internal connections in a desktop PC to connect the drive. This should allow you to run the test and/or extract all the files.

If the test runs ok with the drive connected to another PC internally, or with a USB adapter then you will know for sure that it is the enclosure that has failed.

Hi I have an ageing Dell laptop running Windows XP As it has a fairly small GB internal IDE hard-drive that is pretty full XP all Windows My recognising/working stopped has external with laptop hard-drives my I use a couple of external drives for non-essential stuff like music videos etc A few days ago I switched on one the external drives and nothing happened I usually access my external drives by going into My Computer and clicking on it there but the icon simply didn t appear At first I thought it was a problem with the drive My Windows XP laptop has stopped recognising/working with all my external hard-drives itself but when I tried another drive the same thing happened So far I ve tried mains-powered external drives portable drives and several USB flash-drives and I can t access any of them I have since tested most of my external memory devices on a relative s laptop notebook and they work just fine so it seems to be a problem with the USB ports and or Window XP missing drivers If I go into Device Manager the connected HDDs appear okay and it states that everything is working normally Also I have checked XP s Disc Management program and they show up in there too but as unformatted drives hence why the no-show in My Computer When I plug in a USB flash-drive it does show up in My Computer but when I try to access it I get a message saying the drive isn t formatted But as I have already mentioned I have tested the drives on another computer and they all still work fine Help The funny thing is my wireless mouse that uses a USB dongle is still functioning perfectly as is my digital camera SD card when connected via USB So it seems to be a problem specifically with external HDDs and memory sticks Any expert assistance with this perplexing issue would be greatly appreciated nbsp

I went to connect my external drive last night and nothing as happened apart from whenever I connected the computer made a noise that something had been connected but there is nothing in My Computer. Any ideas what is wrong

A:External hard drive not working with Windows 7

Type 'Partition' into Windows Search, then your external hard drive should show as 'Disk 1'? Right click that and click 'Change letter and drive'. Change it to say D:/ and hopefully it should show in Windows Explorer.

I have two 1-TB external drives which were working perfectly until 10 min ago. I have already tried uninstalling them from the Device Manager, and restarted the PC but it didn't help. My motherboard is Gigabyte Ultradurable 3. I am out of opinions, so thanks a lot for any helps in advance.

A:External Hard Drives Stopped Working

Does the drive turn on at all? Try using another USB cable and see if that works. If that doesn't work: If you are willing, open the hard drive and try to connect it to the motherboard. Then try to boot into Windows and see if it shows up. If not, try UBCD to boot into hard drive diagnose of the brand of the HDD and do short and long test on the drive.
You can download UBCD from Ultimate Boot CD - Overview if you don't already have a copy.
Best of luck!

Hey,

Yesterday, I was working with my PC while my 1TB Seagate external hard (http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeAgent-Ultra-Portable-External-STAA1000101/dp/B0045JLPMO) was plugged in via USB. The USB connection was a little bit loose.

Then when I was plugging a USB flash memory in, I noticed that the external hard was disconnected.
I connected it again, but it didn't appear in My Computer.
Here is the state in Disk Management and Device Manager:

After that, I plugged out the "SATA to USB converter" from the hard and connected it directly to SATA cable inside the PC case (like internal HDD), but this time nothing showed up in Disk Management, Device Manager and BIOS. However, it took a long time for the system to boot.

I searched and read lots of threads and tested some other stuff:

(It didn't appear in Minitool Partion Wizad).

I've got a lot of data on this HDD which really matters to me.
Any help is really appreciated.

Hi there Sedhadi,

If your HDD is failing the manufacturer's tests it is probably dead. IF you need to get your data back look for a reputable data recovery company in the area.
Hope that helps.

A:External Hard Drive Enclosure Stopped Being Detected

It's my experience that enclosures are less reliable than the HDs that we put in them ..
Assuming you get a good brand of HD .. (WD Black series are my favorite)

Sounds like you've tried every thing except try the HD in another enclosure.
For this reason .. I always have a spare enclosure.

Answers to your questions:
1) The only way that MIGHT work is if you buy a new enclosure
2) No
3) no
4) Just break the case open, then you can connect it via SATA, and if that doesn't work it is un-salvageable

A:External hard drive stopped showing up in My Computer

"I hear a weird intermittent constant "Sound" and it's NOT loud, MAYBE It's a "Clicking" sound, But I'm not sure."

Maybe a soft click or a sliding sound? The drive should normally do nothing more than hum.

"I connected it to another PC, it didn't work there too."

Dang it didn't past the test here either. When things go wrong in my computers I often try them in another machine. If it works in the second machine then I know it's still working. If it doesn't work in the second machine then I usually consider the device dead. I'd try a third machine if you have that resource.

If the data are that important I'd consult a data recovery specialist.

Hi,

I have had an Iomega external hard for a year now and it used to work perfectly, until suddenly, my computer (Mac) won't detect it anymore.

When I turn it on, the blue light comes on and I can hear the disk spinning inside, but there is no trace of any external device connected to my mac. I've connected through USB and Firewire with no success. Going to disk utility, only my internal hard drive appears.

It simply just stopped showing up on my computer. Does anybody have any advice to get my hard drive working again?

A:Iomega External Hard Drive stopped being detected

Try a different usb & firewire port physically on your mac & try a different cable. If no dice try it on a different mac or even on a PC, see if the other computer detects it. many times w/ external hard drives the enclosure fails but the drive is ok. worse case scenario the enclosure is bad & you can remove drive to put in another enclosure, or the whole thing could be hosed. try this, post back. thanks!

I'm using Windows xp sp2 and a couple of days ago I tried to copy a wav music track from a cd in my cd drive onto one of my hard drives(not the hard drive with windows on it) it gave a message saying unable to complete due to hardware connection being interrupted
since then the Cd drive and Harddrive I was copying too work only intermittently and for a short time. If you try and copy anything too or from the drive it will start working and then stop.
I think this is a virus problem but aren't completely sure as I've run spyware doctor which found a couple of viruses, but the problem continues despite removing them
thanks. hope someone can help

Hello and welcome blindaussie mate you can fix this drive with Partition Wizard or through a command prompt .
Disk - Clean and Clean All with Diskpart Command

Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.

personally I get rid of any software these drives come with as they are more trouble than they are worth IMHO anyway.

Either way takes a fair while to do and you need to make sure the drive is formatted afterwards.

A:Toshiba 1TB Hard drive stopped working on mac

Hello Badluckkat,

First if you can give us a model number that would be fantastic!
as Toshiba makes a lot of XHDs

As for the device no longer registering;

do you know what your teacher did on your dive is anything?

And then you said your plugging it into your desktop - is that a PC or MAC too?

As for a fix right now I would say restart your macbook boot it up w/out the drive connected then connect the drive when the macbook is fully booted and tell me how that goes

IF THE MATERIAL IS IMPORTANT NEVER TRY ANYTHING THAT WOULD WIPE DATA = THERE IS ALWAYS RECOVERY OPTIONS

First time posting something here so sorry if I forget to post something. I have a Asus Notebook K60IJ Series Model and my OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Recently my boyfriend gave me his WD external hard drive because he didn't need it anymore. I tried plugging it in on my laptop and nothing comes up. No pop-up, sound or notice. I tried plugging it in all my USB ports and nothing. I already checked my USB ports to see if any are corrupt and they are all working. It did work on my friend's laptop though. Is there anything I can do to get it working on mine?

A:WD External Hard Drive not working

What's the exact model of your hard drive?

Try putting your computer into safe mode and see if it works then. Also, if it came with some sort of driver CD, try installing the drivers using the CD. Windows Vista and 7 should be able to pull drivers right off most devices you plug in, but if you have the CD, try it anyway. Might help.

I have a Western Digital external Hard drive that belongs to a friend. I was using it to edit a video that was saved in his HD. i've used it on my computer once before and began to copy the files into my computer but had to stop because of time. the device was removed properly. However now, my computer won't recognize the HD. I've tried the port and other devices i have work and i've tried the usb cord with another HD and that worked fine as well. I've also tried plugging in the HD to 4 other computers and none of them seem to be recognizing it. Physical damage seems unlikely as the hard drive has not been removed from my table. Also it does turn on when the power cord is plugged into an outlet. What could be the problem and are there any suggestions to fixing it?

You're best bet is to take it to a recovery pro, though that costs thousands since they must have a cleanroom and move the platters to another hard drive. Software probably won't work. How much is your data on that worth to you?

My Samsung m3 portable hard drive has started beeping when I plug it in and isn't being recognized. The blue light is still coming on though. I'm struggling to open the case too to get inside it.

Any thoughts on whether it's totally broken much appreciated!!

Well the only way to really tell is to extract it from the housing and connect it directly, however if it is still under warranty you should contact the manufacturer first because cracking open the case will surely void it.

Hello,

My external hard drive recently became unreadable. I've had it for a few years now and it worked fine up until now.

When I plug it in, it makes a clicking sound for a few seconds and then stops.

Here is what I see under Disk Management:

If I choose to initialize it (2nd image below), will this delete everything on the hard drive? If yes, I don't want to do this because I have important data on there.

What are my options for recovering my data?
Sorry for the long images in the post - I tried using a different image file hosting service but the URL was blocked for some reason.
Thanks

Most often the clicking is one sign of a failing harddrive. SpinRite is an excellent tool, but isn't cheap. So, depending on the importance of the data, it may or may not be worth making the investment.

Would like to recover the data on this hard drive. When I plug it in (usb) it powers on, it tries to spin for a second, then stops for a few seconds, then tries again, this repeats and then every minute or so sounds like it is actually in a full spin mode, but only for a couple of seconds then goes back to trying to spin for a second, and the cycle continues. Is there any way I can try to repair this on my own? Or a way to recover the data? Thanks. Joan

Hey, I'm currently using Windows 7 and when I turned on my computer today it said something about needing to scan my hard drive. I let it begin but after 30 minutes I decided to turn my computer off because I had to get onto it to reply to an important email. When I rebooted it, I checked the hard drive and its now empty. In disk management it shows up and says its active and healthy, however if I right click onto it I have the option to format it. Also, if I try to drag a file onto it, a window pops up saying "could not find this item, this is no longer allocated in Computer. Verify the items location and try again."

Is there any way to get my files back?

I have a WD 3,5 Hard drive and I bought I case so I could make it external.

However, when I connect it to my laptop, running on Vista Home Premium x64 SP2 it does not work.

The drive is seen by Vista (it shows up in the Disk Management section in Computer Management) but it does not show up in

As I have all my info there a soluyion that requires a format is not an option.

Try the following. In Disk Managment, right click on where it says Disk1 and Initialize. Then right click on the right side (next to where it says Disk1) and say Format (best in NTFS) and assign a drive letter. See whether that works.

A:External hard drive suddenly not working

The external hard drive could be failing, or there could be corruption (partition table etc...) It's possible that data recovery software can recover the files that are currently on the drive. Since the drive can't be detected at all in Windows, that may be your only option.

By the way, it's possible that the drive itself is still intact, but could have corruption of some type causing the drive not to be detected (for example; a corrupt partition table). In that situation, data recovery to backup the data is needed, then a re-format of the drive should return it to proper working condition.

A:Sata To Usb External Hard Drive Not Working

There's many things that can cause this problem. But the most likely problem is that the hard drive is dead.

Other problems could be:
- the case is broken/defective
- the computer does not recognize the device
- the computer has assigned the wrong drive letter to the hard drive

Does the drive show in Disk Management? If not, then I'd highly suspect that the drive is dead. You'll have to reinstall the drive in a computer and then run a bootable diagnostic to test it.

When you delete something from external HDD it won't go to Trash, at least on Windows.

If that data was really important for you, I would probably advice for professional data recovery services. If you are feeling somewhat brave and adventurous, you can try to recover those files your self. Search for data recovery software, read reviews and pick one (free or commercial). I had some success with Recover My Files. But that's just me, I'm sure there a lot of decent options out there, just do some research.

hi my seagate external hard drive and my and hard working stick external not 8.1 win usb drive USB kingston usb stick suddenly stopped working on my win notebook i have been using them both for months without any problems and they still work perfectly fine on other windows and vista computers My notebooks hardware should be fine because my samsung galaxy s connected to my win notebook USB external hard drive and usb stick win 8.1 not working via usb as media device works i suspect this sudden change of behavior is related to currently released windows updates which got installed some days ago - but i am not sure i also found some people experiencing similar usb storage device related problems since last week and or last windows updates on the web for example here and here more detailed description of problem when i connect the external hard drive to my notebook via usb it gets powered up it starts spinning but shortly after that gets powered off shut down when i connect my usb stick its led does not start to light or flash blinking both are showing up in the device manager folder quot Other devices quot with yellow exclamation mark as quot Desktop quot which is the hd and quot DT Rubber quot the stick the hardwareIDs are USB VID BC amp PID amp REV hd and USB VID amp PID E amp REV stick UPDATE i uninstalled all recent windows updates including the ones dating back to date published now my usb hd and stick are working again so i really think that one of this updates is responsible i'll try to determine which one is it exactly and post it here when i find out thx for your time

A:USB external hard drive and usb stick win 8.1 not working

UPDATE 2:

i installed all the updates including the most recent ones again except following one:

November 2014 update rollup for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2

this is a 800 MB optional, not important update. in the update description there are some mentions about USB stuff. as my usb hd and stick are now working perfectly fine (with all updates installed except this one) i am going to assume that this update really caused the problem.

i mark this as solved

I recently purchased a hotway hd usb enclosure and installed a 2.5" 500gb western digital drive to it. the drive is recognized in device manager and that it is working properly, but when i open my computer it's not there, i have another external drive which shows up when i switch it on so there is no reason why this one shouldn't work; the drive powers up alright and i can feel the drive working.
There is a 5v DC socket next to the usb port but no dc transformer was supplied with the enclosure so i don't know if i need to buy one
Any help would be appreciated

I have a Noontec Sunlite External HDD drive and it was working fine until the other day. I have Windows 7 on the PC and Windows 7 Starter on my laptop, and on each one, when I plug the usb connected to the external into the computer it does not get recognised in any way. It doesn't even make that noise that says a usb has been recognised. It's not in windows explorer and it's not in the device manager. Can someone help?

A:External Hard Drive no longer working

Sounds like the drive has failed. This could be due to the circuitry in the enclosure or the hard drive itself.

To diagnose this, remove the hard drive from the enclosure and hook it up to the internal wiring in a desktop PC. Alternatively buy a USB Hard Drive Adapter (about €10 from Ebay), this will allow you to connect it to any PC by USB. Then see if you can access it.

I have an external hard drive that has stopped working.

It is actually an internal hard drive in an external enclosure. Here are the details:

Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 400 GB. Model # ST3400632A. Adaptec enclosure. I believe that it is about 4 years old.

The hard drive does not seem to be working at all. When it worked, you could hear it spinning and the enclosure would get warm. Neither occurs now. Further, the indicator light on the enclosure flashes from blue to purple.

I am less concerned about it working again as I had already planned to buy a bigger hard drive. But, at minimum, I need to get the data off of it.

Any suggestions?

This hard drive originally was in my brother's computer. He had XP installed, went to install Windows 7 and after the first reboot, it would just hang on the bios screen.

I played with the jumper settings and such, nothin'. Put it in a few other computers, nothin'.

I was just curious, is it something that can be fixed or should I lay it on my desk to hold down some papers?

BTW... there is a green light on as well, but it doesn't blink, I am assuming that light just means it is on

I have an external hard drive - ClickFree 527B3, 500GB. It doesn't have warranty. Whenever I try to write files to it it will stop working, and show up as empty, after 16GB have been written. I reformatted it and the same thing happened. I tried creating two (primary) NTFS partitions and only one worked in Disk Managment. Is there any hope for this drive?

A:External Hard Drive stops working after 16GB

Your ClickFree is a speciality product used to automatically backup the content of the PC to which it is plugged in. We may not know how it is configured to achieve that goal.

In general,

You may have to stick to the procedures laid down for the device on how to format it through ClickFree interface and how to use it.

I also understand you have a Master Reset facility that will reset the drive to factory defaults.

If all these do not resolve your problem you may have to take up the matter with the Tech Support for ClickFree.

You may also check Clickfree and Kooboodle Forums on some troubleshooting tips and other discussions.

You may also post a screenshot of how your ClickFree shows up in Windows Disk Management. ( Please click on the Show/Hide Console Tree and Show/Hide Action Pane icons on the tool bar of Windows Disk Management screen so that we get a full screen view without any truncation.)

A:External Hard (WD Passport 0740) drive not working.

Is the drive listed in Device Manager? Is the drive listed in Drive Manager? ...and if so, what is the drive status.

Test the drive on another computer.

Most common cause is hardware failure, typically the external enclosure USB controller board or the drive has become corrupted (several possible causes).

If the drive works on another computer, then you have a PC issue. But most likely, the drive also won't work on another computer, in which case, you have a drive issue as noted above.

You will have to open the case and make sure the hard drive is still securely attached to the inside interface SATA or IDE connector. If everything looks ok, the drive may be damaged

Hello.

I have an external hard drive. I did the check for errors thing from properties>tools. I checked the options "automatically fix file system errors" and "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors". After some time I thought the scan froze up so I hit cancel and not the disk is unusable. It says "X:\ is not accessible. Access is denied." Same message if I try the error checking option again.

Please help.

A:External hard drive not working after failed disk scan

I think first you need to check for possible drive failure before trying anything else, since if does turn out to be drive failure that's end of story -- new drive required. Download the Diagnostic Software (installable Windows version) from the drive manufacturer's website. The links are here: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

A:Previously Recognized External Hard Drive No Longer Working

I had a similar issue with an external drive when another USB device was plugged in. The hard drive worked fine in my desktop or in the laptop with no other USB devices connected but not when another device was plugged in. Probably a power issue or something. Could that be the issue with yours as well?

The other thing is, just in case your hard drive is on the brink, it might be best to back anything important up in that other system that can still read it.

I have a 320GB I/O Magic external hard drive that I copied all my data to for moving to my new Windows 7 machine (which I just purchased today). Only problem is the new machine is either not recognizing the drive or it's not working with Windows 7. At first it showed as the I drive but when I clicked on it to access my files it just clocked and clocked and My Computer eventually stopped responding. Then it didn't show up as a drive at all. Then it was there again, and so on. Been playing with it all day with no success.

Drive has been plugged into an XP Home machine and there are several applications installed on it because the hard drive on my old machine was full.

Any suggestions?

A:I/O Magic 320GB External Hard Drive Not Working/Recognized

Are you using a powered adapter for your drive or depending on the USB connection to supply the power? If you are depending on the USB it may be due to too much power already being used and not enough to power it sufficiently for the drive to work correctly, if powered by its own adapter check it on another USB port known to be working, these are what I would try if this was something I was needing to troubleshoot on a system I owned or was working on, good luck.

Hi there,

I won't get too deeply into the harrowing saga of how two external hard drives of mine died within days of each other. Rather, I'll just say that I would like to do a virus scan on several external hard drives (including/especially the one I just got to replace the others). In other words, I want to find out if there was a virus or something in the material that I'm putting on the hard drives that makes them die. Could this be possible? If so, how can I conduct a virus scan specifically on the external drives?

Thanks!

Hi,

I am trying to re-install xp pro on my Toshiba Notebook with an external DVD drive. I am able to boot from the drive and the blue "windows setup" screen begins to load.

After I press enter to set up Window XP, it says "setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your comptuer...Press F3 to quit.

I am stumped. If I quit setup and I can reboot and load my original windows. Therefore, the hard disk is present and works fine.

How do I get the windows setup to see the hard drive and proceed with setup?

Thanks.

A:Solved: Install Windows with External Dvd Drive - Hard drive not found?

It is usually because the installation cannot recognise the SATA driver for the hard disc
If you have a usb drive load from Toshiba the sata controller drivers
so on the screen for the install you press F6 load drivers and then load the sata driver from the usb - I say usb as I presume you do not have a floppy drive
OR you can include them in a reburnt CD using nLite but that is a longer way round the problem
Nlite

http://www.nliteos.com/guide/part2.html

OR you can TRY try this

Enter your BIOS/Setup Utility
Locate the Serial ATA or SATA configuration section
I’ve seen this section called ‘On Chip Config’ on some Phoenix Award BIOS

On Lenovo/IBM ThinkPads it’s in Config > Serial ATA (Sata)
Change the mode of the SATA controller from AHCI to IDE or Compatibility
Save & Exit
Reboot and begin the Windows Setup again.
If Windows Setup successfully detects your hard disk this time then go ahead and perform the Windows Setup.
When Windows setup completes change the mode back to AHCI in the BIOS

I had an Iomega 80gb from my XP computer and an AData 500gb from my windows 7 laptop plugged in my windows 7 desktop and they worked just fine. One day I went to retrieve some data from both of them, only to find, that the same error messages popped up for both of them. The first one for both said I need to format it. The second message says the the drive is not accessible, but to make sure the right drivers are loaded and that the drive is not corrupted. Furthermore, I tried the drives on other computers and the same messages are given.
I did reformat the AData drive and lost everything, which is not that bad because it was backup for my backup. However the older Iomega drive has stuff on it that I would like to recover. Does anyone have any answers
Thanks

i'm using windows 7, my external hard drive shows up in my devices and printers section but it won't show up as a drive, so i can't view any files in that external hard drive. if i put a memory card in, it shows up as a drive and a flag shows up for when i want to unplug that drive and it asks if i want to remove my external hard drive too.

normally when i turn on the external hard drive it autoplays but it doesn't do that anymore.

i don't understand why it shows up in my devices and printers but not as a drive when i open windows explorer.

i've looked into the external hard drives properties and it all says that the device is working properly.

A:problem with external hard drive not showing as a drive in windows 7

Go into Control Panel (classic view) ---> Administrative Tools ---> Computer Management ---> Disk Management.

In bottom-right pane, if you see a horizontal band representing a drive with no drive-letter assigned to it, that's the cause of your problem. You need to give it a drive-letter:

Right-click that horizontal band and choose "Change drive letter and paths".

Dell Inspiron 14 3000 Series
I have this laptop. My question is why would you sell a computer with 32GB hard drive when you know the OS will take up 20GB? How am I supposed to use this computer? I can't upgrade the HD and why should I buy an external drive for a laptop?
I am so utterly confused.
Thanks

A:Can't use laptop because Windows 10 is using 90% of the hard drive, what can I do besides using an external drive?

This isn't a true notebook - it's a glorified tablet/internet appliance.  It's fine as a Windows substitute for a chromebook, but forget running anything demanding on it -- it's designed for a single purpose:  to be inexpensive.

I installed windows 7, I'm only done phase 2 and I can't even start phase 3 because my disk drive doesn't work. When I load up My Computer I can see the drive, but when I put in a disk it disappears and I get a message:
"Storage Device Connected
A storage device was connected. If this device is a port multiplier, only port 0 of the port multiplier will be active."
From the Intel(R) Matrix Storage Console.
I've checked for driver updates, and reinstalled the driver.
The disk drive is WDC WD3200BEVT -22ZCT0

Please help me Seven Forums you're my only hope.

A:Disk Drive stopped working after installing windows 7

Is your drive actually not working or are you just getting that message?

There was an issue with that message popping up on occasion even though the drive was still working. Here's the fix for it, although there was an April update as well.

Here's teh april update and the older fix:

Is it usb powered? If so does the hard drive spin up? Are there any clicking noises from the drive?

A:How to run windows 8 from external hard drive?

Why not just wipe the drive so it's blank, delete all the partitions on it. There is no point in trying to keep the Windows 8 install that is on it. You can't sell a preinstalled OS like that, not legally anyway. It's going to fail activation anyway when put in another PC that has different hardware in it than the one it was originally installed on.
Windows To Go will run from a USB drive but you have to have Windows 8 Enterprise to create the drive. Your normal Windows 8 install isn't meant to run like that.

Windows XP Sp2 on Compaq Presario with 2.67GHz CPU, 1GB RAM. Purchased new WD My Book Essentials 500GB External USB HD. Installed per instructions. Reformatted from FAT32 to NTSF per instructions with Windows Drive Manager. Shut down all, rebooted. Drive Manager, Device Manager, TuneUp Utilities, and Diskeeper all see the "H" Drive just fine and indentify it correctly. BUT, My Computer and Windows Explorer do not see it at all!

Changed drive letter fron H to W - made no difference. Emailed WD but have had no response. If I figure my time at minimum wage, I've spent more trying to make the @#%#@$ work than I paid for it! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thnx.

A:Usb External Hard Drive & Windows Xp Sp2

You may have already tried this, but in Device Manager, uninstall the drive, reboot and let Windows XP find the drive and then it should reinstall. That's all I can think of, there are people here a lot smarter than me and hopefully one will show up with a cure if this does not work..

Edit, ooops, failed to notice the USB part of the drive. But you can try to boot with the drive hooked up and see what happens...
This happened to me once and I went into Admin tools, but I don't remember what I did. Sorry.

I was told that i could test Windows 8.1 by installing it to an external hard drive and running it through my PC. I tried using a program called Win2USB or something like that. I had created a new partition and managed to copy the files from the Windows 8.1 disk to the partition, the copy i presumed was bootable. So what would i do now? I am running Windows 7 and want to plug in the external and have it boot up Windows 8.1 as i start up my PC. Thanks.

A:Using Windows 8.1 from external hard drive

WinToUSB > WinToUSB - Install & Run Windows/WinPE on a USB drive!

Does all the work for you - you do not need to copy any files over to the USB manually...
So your usage of the program may be flawed.. You could use a 16GB USB, but a 32GB is better...

Not knowing your partition selection and setup process, it is hard to say, but with the USB plugged into the PC you would then have to bring up your BootMenu (usually F12) and select the USB as your Boot Device..
---------------------------------------
There is another program (that I use) to do the same thing WinToUSB does, But this program does it better and offers more options..

I have a 250gb internal Ultra ATA hard drive enclosed in a 2.0 Usb external case. I installed it and did the formatting and was displayed that the formatting was not complete. I have not been able to re-format the disk or do anything else. My computer does not recognize the drive but I can locate the drive on the control panel where I can "safely remove items." I am running windows xp2 on HP computer originally 40gb SATA. The package instructions said to leave the external drive on master so I left it at that.
During formatting and initializing I was able to name my new drive as k:.
I have read several other threads with my same problem but none of them mention how to fix it when it is not recognized in disk management.
