Custom router firmware

Q: Custom router firmware

Not sure if posting in the right place, but hope someone can help. I have a dlink dsl 2780 and a huawei hg533, I am wanting to put custom firmware on them both but not sure which one is best. after looking about I am all most sure they have broadcom chipsets in them. which dd-wrt says it will work on most broadcoms and also something called tomato. or will I be better using something else. thank you to anyone who offers advice.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Check the ddwrt compatibility list. If your router(s) are on that, then use ddwrt. I've ran it on 2 routers and been very pleased.

I have a Netgear WNDR3400 router and I would like to just dabble with it and see if I can't get any more performance out of it. I checked dd-wrt already and it isn't supported yet. Does anyone know of any other place to get custom firmware for my router type?

Hello all I have read around a Firmware RT-N56U Custom bit and according to the information I have gotten the custom firmware from https code google com p rt-n u seem to be better but as I have no previous experience with this I am left with some questions that I dont seem to be able to find using google How do I prepare RT-N56U Custom Firmware the router Read that I should reset it to factory then just upload the custom firmware is this correct If I want to return to default Asus Firmware Read that I could hard reset it by turning it off and then hold down the reset button while it turns on is this correct Reason for this is because I want to increase performance by being able to turn off as much as possible that I don't use which would decrease heat and lower heat would in return give better performance I have also seen people open it up and added heatsinks to the chips on the back Is there anyone that have either tried this custom firmware or added heatsinks that have any experience and pointers they could give me

A:RT-N56U Custom Firmware

According to the link you should first back up your wireless settings with the .cfg file, this can be done from the router's set up page where it says firmware update etc.

Yes you just upload the new firmware from the routers firmware page.

I'm not so sure that just a reset will restore the old firmware, usually you need to upload the old firmware but your router might be different in this respect.

I'm not so sure that turning off stuff on the router will increase performance although using the 802.11N Only settings along with channel bonding will allow for the best possible wireless connection speeds.

Is there any way to do a firmware downgrade on a Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless Broadband router? Ever since I upgraded the firmware, I have been having all kinds of problems with my connections quitting. I have tried logging onto the router to downgrade to the original firmware but it fails every time. I am getting sick of unplugging the router and restarting the modem every time this happens. My connection to the internet won't even last a day before it quits! If it is not possible to downgrade is there ANY way to fix my problem without going out and buying a new router?

There should be a reset button on the back of the router. This will reset everything to default so you'll need to reconfigure everything.

I looked around and installed DD-WRT, now it works great. I heard tomato is good too, so was just looking for feedback. Thanks

DD-WRT is great, but I would look into powerline adapters if you are streaming video. You get much better throughput and is less of a load on the router.

I just downloaded the latest version of firmware for my linksys wireless-B broadband router (BEFW11S4). The file that was downloaded is a .bin file. What do I do with it to update my router's firmware?

[Update] - Nevermind I figured it out. All I had to do was log onto the admin thingy and select the binary file to upgrade.

A:Router Firmware - BIN File?

go to your routers homepage Ex. http://192.168.x.x

Once your in your routers homepage go click on the administration tab , once the adminstration tab is clicked , a line below provides you several options to select from. Select the (firmware upgrade ).

in there it will say

Please select a file to upgrade ______________________ Browse

click on the browse button and locate where you saved your firmware bin file

i would usually save the bin file to my desktop for the simple reason its easy to locate.

once you locate your file scroll down and click on upgrade. This may take a few seconds and when the meter is done click on the continue button and u should have an updated firmware for your router

A:Router Firmware Question

A great thing to follow with computers and networking equipment is "If it is not broken, don't fix it." This is something that always gets me in trouble because I like to tinker with my computer, router, and etc.

If your router has been working just fine for the last 3 years then I think upgrading the firmware is optional. If you are comfortable reconfiguring the router if something goes wrong and you won't have anybody in the household attacking you because the internet is down, here is a how-to from DLinks website on how to upgrade the routers firmware: How do I update the firmware on my DSL router? | D-Link UK

Hi all,

I have a wrt54GL router, and I was wondering what people thought of various firmwares?

Right now I'm using X-wrt, but to be honest I don't really like some of it's gui.

What would people suggest? I was thinking about using Gargoyle, but I'm not too sure how stable it is: http://www.gargoyle-router.com. It seems to have a lot of nice features, such as an easy to use (unlike X/openwrt) QoS utility and bandwidth quotas.

Maybe DD-Wrt or tomato as well, but I wanted to get some input.

Thanks!

Hi all. I have a Linksys WRT54GL v1.1. I'm currently using the DD-WRT v23 SP1 firmware. I see that DD-WRT v24 SP1 is out, but that I'm actually recommended to use the SP2 beta.

Anyways, being a bit of a networking noob, I have one simple question:

Is there any point to me flashing and upgrading my router to the newest firmware builds? I'm experiencing no issues to speak of currently. Hoping there are some guru's here that can let me know what I should do.

A:Upgrading Router Firmware?

Honestly, if you aren't having problems and the new firmware version doesn't provide some sort of feature that you need...I wouldn't suggest it.

I once upgraded the firmware of my router to try to alleviate a problem I was having with dropped packed. It was a Linksys and I was using the Cisco based firmware. Well, once applied, the router rebooted everytime I ran a traceroute command. Which was real bad since my ISP was coming out the next day and would clearly have a case for blaming my router when a simple traceroute caused it to reboot. It took a few hours with Linksys on the phone to determine the problem was in the firmware and they got me back to the old firmware and the problem went away. And I've left it there to this day.

A:Firmware for Wireless Router

Hi there

The main reason for wireless slow downs is interference. To learn about channel interference SEE HERE. There is also a great article by Microsoft that proposes other sources of interference, and how to fix this HERE .
As for installing DD-WRT, just right click HERE , Save As... and save it somewhere where you will find it later. Then navigate to "Firmware Upgrade" in your router's configuration GUI. Select the file you downloaded and begin the firmware upgrade. After it finishes, go to Administration -> Factory Defaults, select YES to reset to defaults.

You can then proceed to install the standard or mega versions of DD-WRT by using the generic download files and following the same process as above.

Hi Bertison and welcome

You certainly can use the Vista instructions and installer if you install in compatibility mode.

To do that you simply right click the installer, go to properties, then compatibility. Choose Vista and install.

Does anyone know how to get the router back to life? How can I install firmware when I can't access the web interface? Do I now have a paper weight?

So I'm thinking my router is going bad, but I want to try a firmware upgrade before buying a new one. When I go to the netgear download site, it gives me instructions for installing the new firmware and among those instructions is:

Write down all settings that you entered when previously configuring. (Usually this includes information such as ISP configuration and wireless security settings.)

I actually have no idea what those settings are because A) it was years ago, and B) someone else did it. How do I find out these settings and get the new firmware to work properly?

i have always had netgear routers for wireless. i have mine plugged into a modem. if the router is really old u might be better off with a new one as they are a lot faster. my first one was 11mbs. my new one is 54mbs.if u decide to buy a new one just unplug the one wire from the computer and leave the rest plugged in and shut off the computer and modem and router and shut off the surge protector if its plugged into one. when u get the new router put the plug in that u saved from the old router that went into the computer and turn on the computer. then turn on your modem, then turn on the router. the instructions usually give u the correct order and im going from memory.if its done right u wont even need the install disk as it should find the router automatically.and u should have an internet.then if u want to have a password u can go to the website and add one. hope this helps u.

I upgraded the firmware on my network everywhere NWR04B wireless router. Now, I can't access it through 198.168.1.1 or whatever that number is, I can't connect through the internet. The reset switch does nothing and I have unplugged/reset everything! How do I take off this firmware upgrade and put the old one on?

A:Wireless firmware... router not working now?

If you have the user guide, their is somes intructions on how to recover a failed firmware upgrade, they mention to use the tftp program that came with the upgrade. You can try to reset you router to factory default (not sure if it will work)
to do so you have to press the reset button for 3 sec or more.
Also one recommendation: NEVER upgrade the firmware of a router thru a wireless connection, use a wired connection.

I recently decided to upgrade the firmware to my Linksys router. Although I wasn't technically experiencing any issues before the upgrade, my previous version did not include WPA encryption like the newest version.

Since I performed the upgrade, my connectivity is lost anywhere between 2 and 6 times a day. I have isolated this issue to the router by directly connection the computer to the cable modem (no problem then persists). Additionally, the WPA encryption never worked. Whenever I applied a WPA PSK, for some reason, the wireless signal would decrease to virtually non-existent.

Do I need to downgrade the firmware? Does anyone know how I go about doing that?

Thanks!

I was wondering how to remove the firmware from my router. I have heard about flashing it or something but I'm not sure how to get it to work. I need to remove the firmware because ever since I upgraded the firmware my internet randomly drops and won't reconnect for a day or so.

I may not be able to reply to the post for a day or so given my internet may drop again. So please any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Linksys BEFSR41 ver3 Cable/DSL firewall router.
I can access it OK, but each time I go to instal the most recent firmware, I get an error code..'incorrect host address' if I use the installer or error code 'Warning! upgrade file pattern error' if I upgrade through the router.

I have double checked to make sure I have the proper upgrade, and have sucessfully flashed this router in the past.
I reflashed the router with 1.05.00, which is what I started with and it accepted it.
But still does not accept 1.46.02

It seems the firmware version numbers have a bit of 'distance' between them and I do wonder if the Linksys posting is correct:

Any ideas on what might be wrong?

Hi

I am experiencing intermittant connectivity issues and am wondering, whether amongst other thing I should update firmware. ( Have downloaded the microsoft patch) For some reason my internet connection drops every 2/3 days

The version of firmware that I can see is running from the DLink control panel is R 2.01.b5nz. I have no idea if this is the latest. If I need to update, does anyone know how I should do it. I am rather reluctant to do this as I don't wont to "bomb" my computer.

Many thanks

We've recently installed a Level One FBR-1461 modem/router on a network with a fixed IP address. We need remote administration but that's not available with the early firmware version installed. A firmware update (via zip/afw file) was sent by Level One tech support in Germany, but not accepted by the router.

File is:

LevelOne-FBR-1461A-V1.35-RC24-180-80.3_sso_levelone.afw (about 3.5Mb)

I've tried shortening the file name to (perhaps) a more acceptable length, but the router will not accept the upgrade.

Has anyone else had problems or found a solution?

Not from the #1 name in alternative firmware; DD WRT!

Their website says this regarding support for that router:

Quote:
"Currently we cannot support this router due to the lack of driver support for the ethernet switch used in the router. We are currently in contact with Linksys and check if we can solve this issue but it's completely uncertain if and when. "

There are others out there such as OpenWRT, Tomatoe, and SveaSoft... but you will probably have the same issue with them that dd wrt describes above.

A:Router Firmware: Should I Upgrade for Access Point?

you said it already "if it aint broke ..."

get the A/P and wire it to one of the BEFSR41 ports. disable the DHCP service in it
and your wifi connections will be on the same subnet as the wired users.

if you want them isolated, leave DHCP active and change the A/P address to
something different than your BEFSR41; this will inhibit routing between the two
while still allowing both to have Internet access.

Hello.
I have been having a problem updating the firmware on my TRENDnet TEW-432BRP wireless router. When I try to update the firmware by going to the device webpage, I click on 'firmware' and click 'browse' to select the firmware file, the internet browser freezes and crashes. Any Ideas?

A:Solved: Router firmware update problem

Doesn't make much sense to me; as soon as you click on 'browse' it really has nothing to do with the router I think.

With your browser if you do File - Open File... - do you get the same crash? If yes you have some general browser problem. If you don't crash this way I have no idea what's going wrong, and would try a different browser.

FWIW I am using the same router and, at the moment, Firefox 10.0 in Windows XP SP3 and have no issues with 'browse' for a file.

I recently bought a Netgear FVG318 router. It seemed to slow down my network a bit and generally didn't behave perfectly.

I checked its firmware version and saw that it was over a year old. So I downloaded the latest firmware (.bin) file and used the http connection to upload it to the router. About halfway into the update process, the router crashed. I got a "unable to connect" message in my browser window and the router stopped functioning. When I turn the router on, all that happens is that all the green lights flash every five seconds.

There were further problems when I try to reset the router. After I press the reset button, the "Test" light starts blinking as it should, but it never stops. I kept it blinking for over an hour and then manually rebooted it. I get the same behavior as before.

Go to Start/Run and type control userpasswords and press enter. Here create a new user account with admin rights. Log out of your user profile and login as the new user. Do you still have these issues?
If so, you are missing some files from your OS, to proceed to fix this, you need to have an XP CD. You can borrow one, or you can get one on Ebay or Craigslist.
Then go to Start/Run and type SFC /scannow put the XP CD in and it will replace any missing files from the CD.

How to get internet access over second router and setup custom IP?

Relevancy 49.45%

Using a command prompt, how do I discover the internal IP of an unused router, which I set to a custom value and forgot? The router is not currently in use for internet access. I would like to access the control panel of the router without resetting it.

I attached my netbook to the router with an RJ45 cable and disabled the netbook's wireless adapter to avoid conflicts with my current network. Using an elevated command prompt, I did an "ipconfig /release", rebooted and ran "ipconfig /all", but the gateway entry is blank. An "arp -a" returns 169.254.190.120 as the only interface. A "netstat -a" returns 169.254.190.120:xx...'s, 127.0.0.1:xx...'s, and 0.0.0.0:xx...'s, but no router internal IP address.

Is there a way discover the attached device without resetting?

I am trying to coble together two non-working Zen Xtras into a working one. I receive a message: "Firmware Problem," and am instructed to reload the firmware. When I attempt to do so, the firware does not recognize the device although the device shows up in My Computer as a Zen Xtra. I have reloaded the drivers. When I attempt to reinstall the firmware, it states that it cannot detect the device and please connect it now. How do I resolve this lack of recognition?

I have a Westel Wirespeed modem/router that allows various firewall security levels. They also allow someone to custom configure a script. The script that is there already there is:
title [ Security Level 2 IN rules ]

begin

TTLDrop
drop match 3 8 { 01:FE } >> alert 4 [TTL of 0 or 1]

AddresDrop
drop from addr 0.0.0.0 >> done, alert 4 [ 0.0.0.0 Source IP Address]
pass protocol udp, to port 53 >> done
pass protocol udp, from port 53 >> done
pass icmp-type reply >> done
pass icmp-type unreachable >> done
pass icmp-type exceeded >> done
drop protocol icmp >> done, alert 4 [ Invalid ICMP Type ]

Rules
pass all
endClick to expand...

I know absolutely nothing about this scripting. What do I add/remove/change and exactly what would the script look like after defining one particular IP address as a safe address to accept incoming connections from?

To be clear, the remote connections will be coming from a remote computer miles away.

A:Making a custom firewall script in a Westel Wirespeed modem/router?

Not sure, but those are more like firewall or port forwarding commands. From the looks of it it is allowing DNS in and out, passing pings. Weird syntax though. Is there a graphical interface as well as the Telnet interface?

A:Easy Custom image + custom recovery OEM like system?

OKi.. update. I see now more how this program will work. shame its all working fine with .hta, .vbs and .bat.
ANyway, a full gui app will be present in windows 7 and lets a person set up all his wishes and desires for how he wishes ot have his recovery partitions system set up, incl. the option of other partitions to include in this.

When everything is done, a mikepe disk is created (a custom recovery disk which inclues a wimpe native application of this program ) which will run the precompiled settings from win 7 and will rebuild the partitions, all ready to go. It will also link this system to one single computer only (due to licensing issues and piracy protection.. I'm guessing the latter is easily hacked lol). Anyway, after that, it's all just some hours of installoing, setting up, and voila off to go.

A base windows 7 installation (no extra programs), will create a recovery partition of ~ 3 GB and will be redeploiyed all set to go with your own old account and password in less than 5 minutes.

If you add all your own programs etc, the rebuild can take up to 1 hour.

Still much faster than installing windows, changing all your settings, creating yoru account, installing all those programs... etc.

Will also I think add several boot options, as to recover damaged boot loaders, including support for adding boot entries and back up of linux, vista, xp any OS partitions. You will also be able to give the boot entries any name u fancy like:

my fancy win7 box
my rusty xp box
my crappy vista nostalgia
my lovely linux flavour
my recovery partition (SUCK)

What this program WILL NOT support (at least in 1st release) is:

support for dynamic disks
recovery of OEM partitions (well, only if it is intact, but only boot entry is corrupted, else this partition will be REMOVED, FORMATTED and REPLACED by your home recovery system).

pros: no need to pay lots when warranty has expired to reinstall a working recovery system
rebuild your boot manager
save installation time.. a one time configuration is all
option to use as a backup system of any or all partitions
rename drives and letter assignments consistently and safely
have ALL your custom programs installed in yoru recovery image instead of OEM defined layout and programs

(this is both a con/pro depending on which camp you are in?):
accessing low level kernel system, like antivirus progs, meaning meddling with the protection might lead ot serious damage of system (aka tampering with it/cracking it might be risky)

ps. ask hackers, I don't know how to hack and they seem to know it all so
cons
erm, I don't really know hmm, not compatible with OEM recovery system?
but then again, if you still have the recovery discs form OEM, they should be able to recover their system and
overwriting your own so no worries.

PPS. I have written to Microsoft to see if any licensing options to include a binary with this program, in which case, no need for WAIK either which is a bit annoying for an average home user (an additional 1.3 GB download just to get this all to run seemlessly)

Hi all,

I've been trying to find a way to add my own icons to libraries that I make. I have tried navigating to:

Code:
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries
And after right clicking the Library I made, I don't get an option to change the icon. Is there any way to do this? It would just be easier to tell the difference between user-created libraries if the icons could be changed, instead of only using the one default icon provided.

I've tried searching through the tutorials section, and looked through the first five pages or so of results that came up from a search here on the forums, and haven't been able to find the info I'm looking for.

Thanks for any help!

hi!

Can anyone tell me what is firmware?

A:what is a firmware?

Firmware - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
In electronic systems and computing, firmware is a term often used to denote the fixed, usually rather small, programs and/or data structures that internally control various electronic devices. Typical examples of devices containing firmware range from end-user products such as remote controls or calculators, through computer parts and devices like hard disks, keyboards, TFT screens or memory cards, all the way to scientific instrumentation and industrial robotics. Also more complex consumer devices, such as mobile phones, digital cameras, synthesizers, etc., contain firmware to enable the device's basic operation as well as implementing higher-level functions.

I am looking for Firmware for DI-614+ wireless router. When I use WEP encryption, no wireless client (laptop) can connect. I have also tried the latest firmware I can get from D-Link. I hoping to use this with my TFCko box or as my access point for my laptop.

If I cannot use it as wireless access point. Is there a firmware hack to make it a wireless client or a repeater?

Thanks for any ideas

Will this confuse the motherboard bios or Windows 7?

A:2 SSD's 2 Different firmware?

I don't think it will give any problems just because of firmwares. After all, it's entirely internal to each device. As long as each one has the proper drivers and the motherboard recognizes each one, they should work.

I am fresh out of college, and seem to have found a job where I am in way over my head. My employer knows it though, and just expects me to try my best.... anyway heres the question, even though it seems dumb...
When using C, does a hexadecimal Number refer to the memory address (AKA a register or part of the the memory or a port), or does it simply refer to the number itself?

Eg:
ulData = ulMemPos + 0x20;
does this mean add the hexadecimal value of 20-- or to add twenty memory addressing to it?

Firmware is half software, half hardware. Usually it is software embedded permanently into a piece of hardware. Such as the software that runs a digital camera, or drives a USB networking cable.

Dvd disk drive won't run DVD's. Makes alot of clicking, spinning noises but wont read disks. Went to HKEY areas and changed some things recom by other forums. Didn't work. Told needed firmware upgrade. Unable to find firmware for Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530A ATA Device because as near as I can find it's an OEM Device. Went back to Gateway(Notebook Manufacturer) and they don't have. Any suggestions? Ifu can't fix, I guess u install a new DVD Device or a new Notebook.
Was also told by Gateway I needed a Codec upgrade.

A:OEM DVD Firmware

The codec pack is easy enough- Techspot has what you need here http://www.techspot.com/downloads/775-klite-codec-pack-full.html
Install and then try running the discs.

How does the drive show up in the Device Manager ? No exclamation mark in a yellow triangle?
What DVD's won't it run-commercial (retail) movies, or discs you are attempting to burn ? If the latter, what brand of discs.

If it definitely requires a firmware update then it seem's you're out of luck as there are none as far as I can tell.

I have an Olympus Evolt-500 that won't update the firmware. I'm running XP pro with a DSL internet connection. I've talked to every tech support person Olympus has and they don't have a clue what's wrong.

It will recognize the camera and lenses but it will download from 50% to 83% of the firmware update, then a message pops up and says no connection to server and everything shuts off. They had me try the download with no firewall on and using just the modem no router. I've used Olympus Viewer, Olympus Master and Olympus Studio Trial version and they all download about the same amount before they shut down.

I'm open to suggestions at this point.

Hi all.

I have got a Linksys router (WAG354G) that has been playing up so I decided to upgrade the firmware. The problem is that when I go to select my router it has two firmware options.

I need to know what ďAnnex AĒ is about and also what version I should install. At the moment I'm using 1.01.03.

Any help appreciate.

A:Linksys firmware

I do not not know what “Annex A” is but it is for or WAG354G V1.0
Then there is a WAG354G V2.0.

So there only one firmware for your router. Your have to look at your router to see what version you have.
