Changing Dell desktops to removable drives

Q: Changing Dell desktops to removable drives

Hi,

I have several Dell desktops (745, 755, GX260, T5500, Etc) all Win7 and Server 2008, that have factory hard drives; I want to make them removable drives. In the past

I have special ordered desktops with T-7 units from Dell.

Now, I need to make about 20 desktops removable drive desktops, any ideas, Dell says I can't really add a Dell sponsored caddy / cage.

My other issue is I have to add whole disk encryption to it, TrueCrypt is perfect.

I also have to add USB tape backup unit. Q: does anyone have an USB portable tape backup unit and encrypting the hard drive and tape?

Thanks

Mn19~

Preferred Solution: Changing Dell desktops to removable drives

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi we have a Supermicro server with an Intel C series controller and we would like to use some of the ports and their disks as removable devices to allow to copy media from one server to another I mean - The controller has ports with disk on each disks in total - The first ports will remain the same not removable OS in Raid Media in Raid - The other ports - will be used with SATA SSD drives and we need to remove them via Eject hardware as an attached hard drive and then being able to attach them to the backup server to read the media So far as I know there's a DWORD I may need to add in the registry but a little help would be more than welcome to solve this This is the opposite way to not allow the HDD to be ejected HKEY LOCAL MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet services asahci Controller Channel quot TreatAsInternalPort quot dword HKEY LOCAL MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet services asahci Controller Channel quot TreatAsInternalPort quot dword Thanks in advance

I was cleaning a PC that was infected with a tough rootkit and eventually rebuilt w/ OS to ensure all was well. During the attempted cleaning, I had a external hard drive and a flash drive connected to the PC. My question is ... can rootkits and their similar counterparts spread to attached drives such as these [and eventually infect the next PC they are attached to]?

I have since used the flash drive in a new Dell PC w/ Win7 and it is acting a bit strange all of a sudden after sitting overnight.

Thanks much!
Brian

A:Are Rootkits able to jump to external drives or removable drives?

Yes,that is quite easy,especially with .exe files.You ned to clean the drive and scan what ever iy connected to.Were they both Win7?EDIT:You can download and use Autorun Eater or Autorun USB Virus Finder which will allow removal of any suspicious 'autorun.inf' files they find. Panda USB Vaccine. Computer Vaccination will prevent any AutoRun file from running, regardless of whether the removable device is infected or not. USB Vaccination disables the autorun file so it cannot be read, modified or replaced and creates an AUTORUN_.INF as protection against malicious code. The Panda Resarch Blog advises that once USB drives have been vaccinated, they cannot be reversed except with a format. If you do this, be sure to back up your data files first or they will be lost during the formatting process.Another option for XP users is Flash_Disinfector by sUBs. Please read About Flash Disinfector by Papakid and USB/Flash Drive Safety by TheJoker.Finally, always scan USB flash drives and any external storage media after they have been used in other computer systems, even your own. An easy way to do this is to download "ClamWin Portable Antivirus", put it on your USB Flash Drive, update its definition files and perform a scan.{borrowed from our quietman7}

I have a HP computer with a cdrom and a cdwriter...my problem is My computer folder lists these as removable drives. I have sought other help, done numerous things...such as removing the cdroms from device manager and letting Windows 98 re-install them. I can't read these in Windows Explorer either.
I have Adaptech Cd Creator 4.0 and in this program under cd info....the contents of both drives can be seen, also I can test these 2 drives, and they work perfectly under the tests. Any ideas why My Computer and Explorer see these drives as removable? I have exhausted my ideas on this one?????

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 with some problems. I have another newer Dell in the office that is not being used that has more resources. Both are running XP Professional. Instead of trying to re-load files and programs, can I just swap out the hard drives? Thanks.

A:Can I swap hard drives in 2 PC desktops?

You can't swap HDD's unless they are both EXACTLY the same.
What you could do however is install the HDD from your 4600 into an external enclosure and access it that way.

Assuming the drives are the same type ...

I doubt it .. The operating system in a Dell is probably married to the computer and will not work in another computer.

Even if it does work ..
It is licensed to the computer it's installed in .. And will be illegal in another computer ...
You will not be able to validate it .. or update it.

But .. You may be able to change the product key to match the computer it's installed in.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- cut after this line --------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"
-------------------------- cut before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

I would like to change the default icon for one of my removable disks in explorer from the default hard drive icon to something of my choosing. How would I go about doing this. I have tried writing a autorun file and put it in the root, but it didn't seem to work. Is there a registry setting to change or maybe some sort of program like Tweak UI that I could download? I did find a place in the registry where it looks like you can change it, but when I plug in my iPod it sometimes shows up as drive K,L,M, or N depending on what else I have plugged in. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking at a few Dell desktop PC's for a client of mine, who wants me to upgrade them from Windows XP to 7 and then to 10, and I use a KVM switch to switch from my own computer to his ones.  However, today, for the first one I am doing, I had to plug in an external keyboard and mouse, as, despite USB Legacy Devices being enabled or turned on in the BIOS, my KVM keyboard and mouse aren't working!  I went into the Device Manager to check for any driver updates on the USB devices and hubs, and there weren't any, and then Windows told me the USB device could not be recognised!
Ironically, I did look at the same desktop (Dimension e520) for him a few years ago, and the KVM was recognised perfectly.
Also, my Seagate External drive isn't being recognized either!  Any clues?

First-off I want to say Hello!  I am new to this site.

I recently purchased a few Dell Desktop computers to scrap for the precious materials.  Some of these were in working condition when removed from service, but had hard drive wiped.  I don't know what OS they had before but I would like to have Windows 7 or newer in them.  What would I need to do to make these whole again and running?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  These are Dell Optiplex GX110.

A:Making Dell Desktops whole again.

Hi freddiefan I just looked up the drivers webpage for your computer model on Dell website, here:http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/optiplex-gx110/driversIt seems that the only support Windows XP for the most recent Windows OS, which means that they won't have any drivers that are compatible past Windows XP, so no Vista, 7, 8 or 8.1. Therefore, I guess that it won't be possible for you to install Windows 7 (or newer like you say) on these computers. On top of that, I can easily image these computers being under spec'd, which a really small HDD, close to no RAM, etc. I guess the best thing you can do with them is to install a really light-weight Linux distro (like Puppy Linux) on them or completely scrap them, since I doubt you'll be able to do anything useful with these.

It's common if you're using AHCI.

There may be a BIOS setting to set the internal drives as not removable. It's not universal, though.

A:Which Removable Hard Drives are Best

I think it would be a bad idea to have a C: drive that slides out, although there are caddies that allow this. It's not shock proofed like a portable, You'll drop it. You'll move it when it's still spinning. You'll lose the data.

It shouldn't be too hard to fgure out why data is getting written to both your C: and your external drives. It's probably not a bad idea anyway to have them backed up in two places. What if you lost the Lacie. If you install password protection on those files (and you should anyway if your Lacie were to get lost), then they would be safe from casual snoops. A user password on the PC would also do that.

And you might also consider USB thumb drives with password protection for your financial data.

Check Device Manager for red/ yellow flags -

Go to system manufacturer's support site and see if updated drivers are available.

OK. Now, I'm fed up. Vista has some serious problems with removal drives (flash drives). I would connect my Sansa E250 to my computer to recharge its battery before going to bed and in the morning, before going out, I would safely remove it from power. BUT! Vista says that something is using it! WTF! I've only plugged it onto the computer to recharge my portable music player device! I haven't done anything else. WTF Vista is thinking?

A:Vista & Removable Drives

I've had that happen.
When I connect an external hard disk via a USB adapter, the Safely Remove Hardware thing from the tray sometimes works OK and sometimes not. It depends what's on the particular hard disk, such as whether it only has data files or also has a Windows OS on it.

I don't know of any solution except just don't use the Remove Hardware tray icon. If you are sure there is no reading or writing happening on the USB device, it's probably safe to just unplug it. If that seems too risky, you could put the computer into Sleep mode, then unplug the device.

My sister's computer is a HPW17E and is running on Windows VISTA. All of her removable disk drives I, H, F, G, and E are full. Her C drive is a fourth full and D drive about 3/4 full. I believe she may have a virus. They were using Trend Micro Antivirus 2008 plus antispyware. They did not renew there antivirus software when it expired. Will the old virus software still work except for any new viruses except for any new viruses not being detected, or when the old software expires would they no longer have any kind of virus protection? The screen on the computer had went black. After leaving it off they are able to get back on finally. What are your suggestions to fixing the full drives? They have a ton of pictures, not backed up. Any suggestions to prevent from losing these pictures? Any helps appreciated!

A:Removable drives i, h, f, g, and e are full

You should check out under General Security what freeware is recommended for Internet Security and virus protection. As far as I know, when a program is not updated, you are not protected.
Are all those drives harddrives built in? Or USB drives? If you can, get an external drive to backup each drive. If they are usb drives, only plug one at a time in, then you shouldn't have a problem.
Is this a desktop or a laptop? Laptops overheat when too much is plugged in and shut down. Also when a virus checker (even if outdated) first runs, it can get stalled by too many drives to be checked. I unplug my USB sticks and then everything works fine.
Updating memory also helps, since you didn't clarify what component the computer has, every bit of informations helps the volunteers to come up with an answer.
And Welcome to TSG,

Hi, this is my first post LOL.

A:Cant open removable drives

Hello N.P

This could just be a glitch or the result of a malware infection.
Try the drive association fix here
Scroll down to
?Frequently used Tips & fixes for Windows XP?
Select the ?Drive association fix for XP?

If that does not help
Open Windows Explorer
Tools/Folder Options/View

Put a check at ?Show hidden files and folders?
Remove check from ?Hide extensions for known file types?

Remove check from ?Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)?
Apply
OK

Now look for "Autorun.inf" in the root of the drive. By this I mean H:\ etc

If you can`t see it
Start and select "Search" and search for
"autorun.inf" (Search the computer including hidden files)

Can you see a file "Autorun.inf"
If so rename it to a "a *.bak" file. (Right click/Rename)
It then becomes "AutoRun.bak"
Reboot and check if fixed.

You can delete the file later if all is well.

How to prevent removable drive from being a carrier of viruses and malware?

1)Sometime you have to transfer data from removable drive to your PC for work and projects. If the PC is infected how do you prevent it from infecting your removable drive?

2)how do you prevent infected removable drive from infecting your PC?

Is there any way to spot it?

Hi guys I am trying to recover some deleted files from my android phone (samsung galaxy s3) but the file recovery software I am using only detects removable devices yet the S3 Shows up as a portable device. Is there a way to override this, because in the file recovery software it only detects drive letters.

Hope someone can help I really want to recover deleted photos

A:Changing portable device to removable storage

If the phone is rooted, you can try this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...51bmRlbGV0ZSJd

Or, on Windows, this: NTFS Undelete — Easy to use undelete software

You might be unsuccessfull though, because on flash drives, the empty space is flushed occasionally to speed up writing operations, since flash memory cannot simply be overwritten like harddisks, but the deletion of the old content is a separate operation. This is why the TRIM command is used by many OSs when accessing flash disks.

Hi guys,

This is another minor annoyance. When I insert any removable drive (USB, SD cards, etc) the device shows up twice in Explorer. Once under "This PC" tree and the other as a device. See attached pic (USB Drive H):

I remember hearing about this being the way it's designed to work, but frankly it's a bit silly - I only need to see a single entry for the drive/device...

Is there any way to get rid of one of these entries without stuffing up some other Explorer feature?

Cheers,

So I basically explained what I wanted to do with the title: I want to add desktop icons of removable drives whenever I insert a flashdrive/memorystick/or some other kind of drive. I also want it to disappear once that drive is removed.

This is probably the one feature I want from Macs that Vista doesn't have. The dock is the second, although that's an easy fix with so many dock programs around.

So am I asking for too much with this small feature? Already I have shortcuts of the drive icons on my desktop, but it looks a bit ugly, especially when an icon has a question mark sign on it. And I'm trying to keep my desktop as clean as possible. Last, I'd prefer that the program is free. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving Day.

If you plug in a USB memory stick, or other removable drive, XP automatically opens an explorer window to show you what's on the drive.

How can I STOP this from happening.

We are using our memory sticks as a USB key (login) for software and don't want that window to appear forcing the user to close it.

ps Yes, we've worked out a way of securing the file and preventing it from being useful if copied to another stick, so duplicating keys is not an issue.

We just don't want that explorer window to pop up when the computer sees the USB memory stick!

I think this first started being an annoyance to be back around the launch of Windows 7. I've got an entire array of drives in use on my PC at any given moment, disbonded on my task or needs. With the advent of much larger USB thumbdrives, I've had less and less need for swapping/moving USB HDD's all the time.

SO this is what I want...I would like to be able to tell DeviceManager that these USB drives are just plain old drives and not Portable Devices (Clip1).
It makes me insane in the file explorer where under This PC:> that when I expand, displays a whole collection of my drives nested under This PC but them shows them again independently/redundantly (Clip2)

Cool article, but there's an easier way that does not disable Shell Hardware Detection or AutoPlay!.

When using removable media, instead of simply yanking the device out (as most people do), use the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon in the Taskbar Notification area:

That way, you won't screwup the filesystem of the device, and you'll never see the "Scan and Fix" prompt...

My wife just recently got a flash-based MP3 player that can just plug in like a flash drive. She also has her existing flash drive. When both devices are plugged into our Win2k system, they both show up as "Removable Drive" just with differing drive letters.

She's already labeled the flash drive with a unique name (My Computer-->Right clicked on the drive-->Properties-->Typed in "MyStuff" as the label-->OK), and the label stays (even after she unplugs/replugs the drive), but Windows won't display the label, it just says "Removable Drive". This gets awfully confusing when both the flash drive and MP3 player are plugged in and they both are shown as "Removable Drive"!!

How do I get the label(s) to show for these devices?

A:Labels for removable (flash) drives

Go to Device Manager, and assign each of the drives a unique drive letter. When you plug them in, they'll always be assigned that drive letter. This should help you tell them apart. FWIW, when I label my FLASH drives, they show up in My Computer with the volume name, just like any other drive.

Hi,

I have a Compaq V4310NR with XP Home. Recently, it stopped reading any removable drive such as USB Flash or via the 9-in-1 card reader for SD cards. Once inserted, the drive is shown, but when you double-click it says "disk in drive d is not formatted would u like to format it now?"

And the thing is that these are perfectly fine in other computers. I've tested repeatedly with USB and SD card. Also, if the card is in camera which is then attached via USB, it can usually see the data (not tested in all configs).

Is this work of some virus, or some settings gone bad? Please help, and thanks in advance...

A:Laptop not reading removable drives

First step, Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Create a restore point and name it something like "Before USB Fix". This is to bail you out if something goes wrong during the following process and makes things worse.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG

-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------
REGEDIT4
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"

-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function. I don't have one yet, so I haven't had time to modify the instructions.

The only way to activate the drive is reboot the server. Then go to management and inport foreign. This works fine this way. Hmm, grayed out would seem to indicated that it is showing the empty drive letters for a memory card reader instead of hiding them. You might try one of the other options in the tutorial to hide them to see if it may work better.

From one the BitLocker tutorials below, Win10 uses the new XTS AES.
My question is, if I use XTS-AES for Removable Flash Drives, will it also work on older Windows OSs like Win7 and Win8?
In case I need to access my USB flash drive running the XTS mode while I am on travel and need to insert it on my friends or family's PC running Win7 or Win8, will it work?
Or, will I have to just set the encryption method setting for flash drives to CBC instead of XTS mode?

Windows 10 uses XTS-AES 128 bit by default for operating system drives as well as fixed data drives, and uses AES-CBC 128 bit by default for removable data drives.

I just completed an update installation on a desktop PC running Windows 7. Now my hard drives show up as removable drives.

Normally this is due to the need to install an AHCI driver. And that is normally the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver for Intel chipsets. The driver was installed in Windows 7.

Is this a case where I need to manually install a new IRST Driver for Windows 10?
If so, should I uninstall the existing first, or will the new one overwrite the old?

A:New W10 Install - Hard Drives Show Up As Removable

OK dudes and dudettes - I solved this problem.

I had to reinstall the ICH10R SATA AHCI Driver for my motherboard (Asus P6T).

Trouble was, the most recent Intel driver version was showing for the Intel ICH10R SATA AHCI Controller device in Device Manager.
I started by going to the Asus P6T website and downloaded the current driver package (for Windows 7 64 bit - the newest OS available), and unzipped it to a file on the desktop.

Then in Device Manager I went to Properties for the Controller > Update Driver >
Initial attempts resulted in "The best driver is installed"
Now I selected "Browse my Computer" and I then went beyond that to "Let me pick from a list of drivers for this device" > selected the SATA AHCI device > Next
This installed the generic Windows 10 driver (10.0.10586.0). > Restart > problem remains.

Back in Device Manager > Search my computer > navigate to the folder on the desktop > highlight driver folder > Next > Restart

Problem solved. Intel Driver installed. No more removable drives.

The driver version is the same as it was, but now the AHCI part is working as expected.
Go figure.

So I can leave IRST alone (uninstalled), as I have read that Windows 10 does not need it.

I'm pretty sure I have a virus on my PC itself and on my flash drive. CA keeps popping up every 10 seconds or so telling me that a virus has been detected and deleted on my removable drive. It's called INF/Slenfbot.GT and it's on my Autorun.inf file on my drive. Need help please!

A:Help have virus INF/Slenfbot.GT on removable drives, CA pops up every 10 secs

Most likely the virus is on the PC, it is trying to replicate by copying itself to the flash drive so it can infect any PC it is plugged into. I suggest formatting the flash drive and remove it immediately after it is done formatting, then clean the PC of the virus.

Go to this board, read the first "Sticky" at the top very carefully, then post your HJ log on that board for expert help in removing the virus.

I've just bought a Samsung SATA DVD drive, model SH-S223L/RSMN. It appears in Device Manager as TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223L ATA Device. Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit.

It seems to be working fine, but in Windows Explorer (Tiles, Group by Type) it appears in the Hard Disk Drives group, and not under Removable Storage.

The only change I have made since installing it is to add an UpperFilters entry to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} to make iTunes start without complaining. I don't think this is related.

Any ideas how to get it back in the right group?

Hi.For the past few days various folders have been appearing on any removable media that I plug into my main laptop. On other computers/devices I can see folders like "women73321","womengomed" and an autorun.inf pointing to "womengomed/bionce.exe".On my laptop they are all hidden even when I have "show hidden files and folders" turned on.The Internet on the laptop (56K TelstraClear NZ dial-up connection) also slows down noticeably and disconnects randomly. Also,The "bionce.exe" file has not been uploaded to VirusTotal before.I uploaded it as "bionce-not-for-execution.obsc" and here are the results. The Laptop is running Windows Vista SP1 32-bit and the make&model is a Compaq presario CQ60.

Hello your Virustotal link is broken,do you still have the link? Please run this also.Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Download Link 1Download Link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen:Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.Exit MBAM when done.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.Troubleshoot Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

First off.... im running XP SP3 and have no other problems that i know of. Can't find any viruses when i scan with AVG. This just randomly happened.

Every time i plug in a removable device (USB stick, external HDD, etc) i get the autoplay dialogue box but when i click open folder to view files nothing happens. If i go to My Computer the device shows up as an empty folder instead of a drive...

If i double click the icon the loading timer shows but then does nothing. I can only access the files by right-clicking and clicking 'explore'. Everything looks fine in the disk manager.

Im confused, im usually pretty good with computers but this has me baffled, anyone seen anything like this and know what to do?

Thanks in advance

How many eSATA ports does your motherboard have? Will that external enclosure actually hold 4 drives? If it required drivers to be installed to work, I would re-install them. If it's still under warranty you may want to return it. If it's not under warranty can you open it without breaking it to have a look inside?

I own a Dell XPS 8900 desktop computer purchased in late 2015. It came pre-installed with Windows 10 Home. Just this past week, using a legitimate  product key, I upgraded the OS to Windows 10 Pro.
However, I later realized (by way of some quick internet research) that whatever product key was used to activate the Windows 10 Home system that came with the host was actually injected into the motherboard. I did not obtain this information before upgrading to Windows 10 Pro.
My question is this...If for some reason I wanted to go back to Windows 10 Home (by re-installing it from scratch or using some kind of downgrading process), would I need to know what that original product key was or would my instance of Windows 10 be automatically activated due to the built in key in the motherboard?
Note: I tried to use a special utility to extract this key but I wasn't successful.

A:Dell Desktops, Microsoft Windows OS product keys and Windows 10 Home

MCFARI,
You would have no problem activating Windows 10 home if you decided to go back to that OS. The key code is still embedded in the motherboard.

How can I reset the new drive so that it will register as a LOCAL DRIVE and not as a removable drive? Reformatting didn't help. And I couldn't change things with Computer Management...
Suggestions?

It looks as if the new drive, unlike the others, does NOT have an MBR partition. Could this be the problem? How can I change the partition? Will fdisk do the trick?

A:resetting removable drive as basic rather than removable

MBR is not the problem, thats Master Boot Record, you have absolutely no reason for that on a hard drive that isn't booting an OS.

Make sure the drive is in DMA mode rather than PIO.

I have a HP PC computer with a SATA c: drive with Windows xp and I'd like to change that drive out with an old larger existing hard drive which also has Windows xp. Can I do this without damaging anything?

So I installed a second Hard drive this weekend. And I want to create a new partition on the new hard drive, which will hold my boot files. So I want a partition of my second hard drive to be my main boot device. (Like 20gb)

Then I?m going to combine my first hard drive, and the remaining space left into 1 partition.

My Local disk has my Boot, Page file, and Crash dump. I want to move this to my new partition. (Second HD)

I tried moving the entire windows file in my local disk to the second hard drive, half way through it wouldn?t allow me to move all of the files.

How do I do this without re-installing windows?

Hi, I have a desktop computer which just blew up and was using xp professional. I have aquired another desktop computer which is using xp home . I am trying to switch the hard drive from the old computer into the latest computer. I have transferred the hard drive to the latest computer but cannot get it to boot up. It tries to start but just goes rounds in circles. Any ideas how to rectify ?

You cannot simply transfer a hard drive between computers, it would be much easier to acquire a Windows XP Pro CD and re-install it using the original COA on the machine you are putting it in.

It also is not technically legal either. The installation of Windows on a specific computer that uses the COA sticker on it is meant for that specific machine and is not supposed to be transferred.

Basically my problem is that when i installed windows 7 i installed it onto a 150gb hard drive. I soon realised that this was not large enough for my needs and was begining to run incredibly slowly. So i decided to upgrade to a Seagate Barracuda 1TB hard disk. I wanted to copy all of my file over to the new disk and keep the OS, i was told that cloning was the easiest way to do it, so i cloned my old disk. However, when i took out my old disk and booted up the computer i got the error message "NTDLR is missing". Please Help me

During the BIOS post splash screen, tap F8. This will bring you to the system recovery environment. Choose "Repair Your Computer".
