I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Resolution too high and can't change it

First: Try changing resolution through Screen Resolution menu (Right-click on desktop)
Second: Try changing it through Nvidia Control Panel
Third: You monitor will have an auto-calibration function, accessible by the buttons under it, or any software provided by the manufacturer.

Ok - First off Im using a quot Dynex TV as a monitor hooked in through a VGA port on the TV When I start my computer the screen jumps around and it says 'detecting signal' settles on x during boot When - issue resolution from monitor resolution my I windows?? can outside change windows starts to open it jumps again for a moment and goes to x the right setting for it I was playing Metro and its too slow in so I reduced it to x which apparently the TV cant do it just went black so it reset to monitor resolution issue - can I change my resolution from outside windows?? I was trying various resolutions some were too wide too monitor resolution issue - can I change my resolution from outside windows?? skinny etc and accidentally clicked on again screen went black and this time didnt revert I restarted my computer and now after the phase in boot it doesnt go to like it should but at the opening to windows where you put in your password it switches to after it jumps to adjust a few times it goes black like in the game it tells me detecting signal normal then no signal detected which is what it tells me if I have it on say component with my xbox turned off or video with my dvd player off or even VGA with the computer off for that matter What Ive tried I tried turning the monitor off and on to see if I could adjust the settings back while it was adjusting before going black but it just stays black I started up in safe mode which was x and it was ugly but worked I tried resetting the resolution but it only gave the base options and that was only for safe mode it didnt hold when I selected or and restarted in regular it went back to and went black I tried going through the TVs menu options and theres no setting for resolution the tv detects it on its own I tried switching to component with my on hoping itd readjust for the settings which it did and then have to readjust going back to VGA but it stayed black Basically I think I need to access some file and tell windows to boot in and not in if it helps I still had vista installed hence me being able to even do this so I can do it either through command prompt or preferably through vista in notepad I have a nvidia geforce vid card if that helps Thanks SO much if you can help

A:monitor resolution issue - can I change my resolution from outside windows??

does the Nvidia card have any software which could manage screen resolutions? If so you can try that in safe mode....

Also, tap F8 on startup, but instead of safe mode chose "enable VGA mode" which should cause windows to boot normally, but in 800x600 (or something of the like, that just about all monitors and TV's support)

Hi all,

So I'm creating a program for a friend but we are having trouble trying to display things in a 1280 x 1024 resolution.

Is there any way to create a custom resolution on my laptop or monitor of 1280 x 1024? Our monitors don't have this resolution listed in the display settings, or is this a driver issue?

The resolution availability can be affected due to the graphics card installed. I will have a think about any other factors which may affect the resolution.

Hey Sevenforum.

Is it possible, that I am only able to go 1024 x 764 when running Win 7 with my MacBook Pro Alu 13' from October this year? It is running 2.53 ghz, 4 GB ram, and 9400M.

Hope you can answer me. I find it very annoying that I cannot run same, or even close, to the resolution i am running in OSX. Seems like my graphic performance has been slowed down dramaticly.

Hi michael

I suspect you just need the correct driver. open device manager by type device manager in search. go to the display tab. Is your device listed? does it have a yellow triangle on it? are there any "unknown devices"?

After switching to Windows 7, I can't choose native resolution for my display (1920x1200). The higher I can get is 1600x1200. I can't set custom resolution on any window - well, I can click on that options, but then i just can't apply any custom settings. It's really pain in the below, to watch 1600x1200 on 1920x1200 monitor, so I hope you can help me.

I tried, without succes, 195.62 from, 195.62 from (my GPU is Gainward 260GTX) and 195.81 beta. I even used third party software like Driver Cleaner and Driver Sweeper. Without any luck. My maximum resolution is still 1600x1200.

Have you tried updating your graphics card drivers? Go into Device Manage and click Update on you card. If it does not find new drivers, go to the card manufacturer's site and download drivers manually.

If you fill in your system specs, perhaps we can find drivers for you. Download Speccy if you don't know your hardware.

A:Laptop resolution too high

Go to a blank place on your desktop, right click on it, go to Properties.

Click on the Settings tab and adjust the resolution to 800x600. That should bring down the resolution and make the icons bigger.

If you need things to be bigger, go to Start -> Control Panel -> Assessibility Options -> Configure Windows for Vision and other needs.

Go through the wizard to adjust Windows to your liking.

So I just bought a new laptop which has a resolution of 1900 by 1080. However, thanks to the high definition, everything on screen looks so damn small!

I've tried searching for a slightly lower resolution option, but the next lowest option that retains the 16 by 9 aspect ratio is 1280 by 720, which makes everything so HUGE.

So I was wondering, is there anyway for me to increase the size of EVERYTHING (not just fonts, for example the buttons at the top of firefox are damn small, as is the address bar and stuff like that)? Preferably while maintaining my native resolution?

Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have a Radius Pressview 21" CRT monitor that I recently obtained and I decided to play WoW on it to try it out. In WoW video options the monitor can max out around 2560◊2048 which is much higher than my last monitor. If I try to run the game this high it looks beautiful accept for that only half of the picture shows up on the screen. I would love to play the game at a resolution close to this but it just will not center until the res reaches the 1200's. Am I just dreaming or is this just possible with my setup. It is inadvisable to run a monitor, be it CRT, LCD, TFT, PLASMA at a resolution that is not supported, especially one that is greater than that supported natively by the monitor. In some cases, severe damage may result and the monitor may stop working permanently.

Hello, I want to buy a new monitor, but I don't know which one.
The things I want:
-A high resolution, the maximum for my graphics card is 2560x1600. I want to utilize it as much as possible.
-the screen doesn't need to be too big, but not too small. I want a good size for sitting around 80-100 cm from my monitor.
-It doesn't need to have a lot of functions like USB and MicroSD slots.
-Paying more than 500 euro for a monitor is the max.
-I would like it if it has the same ratio as an A4 paper because that is more pleasant for your eyes instead a total rectangular display. This isn't 100% necessary.
I hope someone can help me with choosing a new monitor.
Kind regards,

First post to forum!

I've built myself a PC and run into some problems with the display resolution.

OS: Win 7 x64
Graphics Card: XFX/ATI Radeon HD 4550 512MB PCI-E 2.0 VGA/HDMI/Dual-Link DV
Monitor: Hanns G HZ194

Display Adapter: ATI Radeon HD 4550
Monitor: Generic PnP Monitor

Current Resolution (I guess) is 1024x768 although the settings show that I have selected the recommended 1366x768.
Everything is moderately big and chunky - not safe mode though.

My first thought - still fairly certain? - is that the Generic Monitor is causing the problem.
I spoke to HannG support and they tell me that they have no driver as it is a Plug and Play monitor.

Any ideas how I can get a sensible resolution. It's causing me some big problems as some of my applications don't fit on the screen properly and don't have effective resize/scroll bars.

I have a laptop with a 3200 x 1800 screen and the toolbars and menus of Illustrator and Photoshop are nearly illegible due to their minuscule size. Indesign displays normally, as does Lightroom.

On the adobe forums, two entries - Adobe Community: Photoshop CC on a High DPI display on Windows 8.1 and Adobe Community: Photoshop CC / Windows 8.1 HiDPI / Retina scaling support - suggest this is due to Microsoft not supplying required APIs (whatever these are...).

I appreciate that 3200 x 1800 is still new, but over four months have passed since the posts on the adobe forums and the problem endures. Surely a giant such as Microsoft should already have that loophole closed? It is quite astounding that such an issue should even exist in the first place.

Anyone knows whether we can expect anything soon that will resolve this issue?

A:converting jpeg into high resolution so as in printable format

You can't really just enlarge a low resolution photo and have it look good. The photo only contains so much "image information" and when that information is lacking, the enlargement shows the gaps.

Many photo editing suites have some compensation for that, such as reducing "sharpness" to effectively smudge the existing pixels to fill in the missing ones. But if you want a good, high resolution image, you need to start with a high resolution image.

I was back at over clocking my poor PC (probably all that looking at quad core intels and 8800 cards) and to see how my graphics were doing set half life to 1600 x 1200 which my monitor doesn't like and wont display. Now I can't undo it - there is no second chance unlike windows.. and suggestions? I've tried setting the resolution to 60hz in windows but that does not help - incidentally the monitor can support 1600 x 1024 at 100 hz but not 1600 x 1200 strange - its a Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 220 CRT.

Found this info on the steam site:

How do I set the autoconfig launch option?

The -autoconfig launch option will allow Steam to configure the game with the best settings for use on your machine.

Open Steam
Go to the "My Games" tab
Right-click the game which needs to be reconfigured
Select "Properties" from the menu
Click the "Set launch options..." button
Add -autoconfig at the end of the line, be sure to include a space before the "-" and anything before it.

If that doesn't work try and and put -w 800 instead of -autoconfig

give it a shot

For some time now, I see that the latest mice have a high resolution + are laser

I have to admit, I'm coping just fine with an old optical mouse

Resolutions where never mentioned before?
What does a higher resolution give to you more than an ordinary mouse?

Obviously better - but how and why?

A:Solved: Do I need an ultra sensitive high resolution laser mouse?

Laser is actually not better, it's just newer and cooler. And harmful, in some cases, to your eyes.
Higher resolution gives you, well, more accurately moving mouse. I'd say the best thing out there, just on general level is something like the Logitech MX518. Optical, high quality, nice resolution, back and forth (or mouse4 and 5) buttons, change of sensitivity on the fly. Nothing too fancy and extra. It is, of course a bit of a gaming mouse, something cheaper will do just perfect for office work, web browsing, photoshopping, etc etc.

We have a projection TV 53'' and are trying to hook up the pc through DVI. The only resolution we can get is 702 X 480, which means the image is cut at the bottom and the sides and we're not able to change the resolution in any way we try
The ATI graphic card is saying that the maximum resolution can go to 1920 X 1080 16X9.

Do you know if we are able to change this and how?

A:We can't change the resolution...

720 X 480 is standard NTSC resolution for TV. I believe you should be able to find a screen adjustment (overlay) setting in your driver to get the picture displayed correctly. If you change resolutions, the TV wouldn't accept the picture.

To answer your question. I sure it is possible but not sure what file .
The other question I have is why don't you let Win7 do it?
Right mouse click on desktop and select Screen Resolution.
Seems simple enough.

is it the monitor that wont allow that resolution?

It is quite possible that it is limited by the monitor. Especially if windows installed a generic monitor. Check the PB website and see if there is a download for your monitor that will allow you to reach the resolution you want.

Did you use the OEM CD that came with the pc? If you did not, the answer is yes you do and you will need to install all the drivers for your motherboard. If you did use the OEM CD that came with your pc, open Device Manager and see if there are any red x's or yellow flags next to anything in there. Again, if yes to this the install the drivers.

Try changing one thing at a time. Change the colors to 16-bit then restart. upon reboot, change the resolution & if it asks, reboot again. That should work unless you're constantly rebooting in safe mode.

I got to the list of brandds and mine is not on there because it's not a popular one.. it's an EMC... is there anything I can do to fix this without bringing it in???? do I need to find a install disk or something?

A:Monitar won't change Resolution!

There are two things that can make this happen.

1) Wrong video drivers

2) Wrong monitor type

For monitor type, you can just choose Standard on the left, then 800x600 on the right. If it works, great.

But the problem is usually number 1 - you have the wrong drivers in for your video card. You said you did a restore recently - do you know what kind of video card you have? Do have a driver disk for it?

A:Automatic Resolution Change

Hmm. Good Question. I wonder if there isn't a script file you could run to make all the settings you want, then launch the program's executable. Do the settings go back to "normal" when you are done, or do that automatically do that, as your thread implies ?

Meaning, is that what happens, or is that what you WANT to happen ?

I'm thinking, you might need a script to change them back when you are done, also.

She kept the 17" monitor from a, at the time, "state of the art" Gateway probably bought in 1994 or 1995.

The resolution setting is 640 X 480 and the arrow or control to change it to 800 X600, etc. is "grayed" out and can't be changed.
I have had PC's since the Commodore 64 but have never seen this problem-
Your suggestions are appreciated.

A:Monitor resolution - can't change !

It is either corrupt or uninstalled video drivers or more likely since the computer is new, the computer can not auto detect the capabilities of the monitor and needs drivers for the monitor installed. Check both and you should find the cause.

i cannot change my display resolution or color resolution from 16 bit, the only options i have r 2 color and 16 bit, how do i get to install/use higher resolution??, i recently formatted my hard drive and had to reinstall win 98, i installed a driver for sound card so i have sound again, but the resolution has me stumped, any suggestions??, thanks a million...shauna

A:display resolution cannot change

If you donít have a CD with your video driver on it you will have to download it from the manufacturerís site.

You normally install it through device manager Ė right click My Computer>Properties>Device manager and double left click on display adapters and then your card.

have an HP pavilion 7850 that I can not change the number of colors from 16 to anything else..even though 256 and 16 bit are showing as available. Also can't change the resolution from 640x480 to anything else. I have tried changing from the default monitor to plug and play.

This machine has also lost it's sound.

Check on the systems yellow icons..drivers say they are ok and working.

Ran a virus scan..nothing. Did get one message from Norton SystemWorks 2002 that a script "MSOOBE.exe was detected and stopped.

Any clues?
Thanks for the help.

A:screen resolution does not change

Hello Sujen, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You can uninstall the newer drivers in "Programs and Features", then install the ones you had before until another new one that comes out that works better for you.

Hope this helps,

I just reformatted the hard drive and installed Windows ME on a Protek computer that belongs to a friend. I am unable to change the screen resolution from 640X480 16 bits color. I am sure I need a driver for the video card, but I donít see one in the slot I believe that the VGA card is built on the motherboard.
How can I determine which driver I need?
Appreciate any help

A:Can't change resolution settings

Download and run this program. With the info provided go to your motherboard or system web site and download the driver that you need. Post back if you need help.

Due to some flaws in the Acoustica DVD Labeling software some of my DVD movie JPEGS don't display right and the techs have told me that I need to rescan them at a higher resolution, like 1200, before I import them into the labeling software. The one attached is 300.

I'm not really sure how to do this with my ReadIRIS scanning software, so if someone could help me out until I figure this out, it would be appreciated.

(5 mins later) Idiot Alert!...Actually I just learned that the Acoustica tech though I was scanning my movie JPEGS directly from the DVD, so since you can't change the resolution of a JPEG without it being re-scanned just disregard. Or can you do it without re-scanning?

I am using a 1600 x 1050 px screen, the computer was adjusted to this resolution, but when I open games like StarCraft which do not have resolution options or windowed mode options, half the time, when I quit, the screen goes blank and there is an Input Not Supported box. I always end-up manual resetting my PC

I know this means the resolution from the game is not supported when I am on my desktop.

All I want to know is:

Is there a way to make it so that the resolution auto-sets itself? Or some software, or registry file, or whatever that can stop this from happening?

(changing my desktop to 1024 x 768 px is not a good solution, it is very ugly, hurts my eyes, and also sometimes goes input not supported)

A:Cannot change screen resolution

Uninstall the current display drivers....reboot the system.

Your display resolution should then be the default, since no drivers are installed.

Install the display drivers, either from your drivers CD or via download from the appropriate site.

Hi! I just bought Asus K52f ex949 notebook and I have installed Windows 7 Home basic (32bit) and all the necessary drivers. But I only have 2 options for my screen resolution: 800x600 and 1024x768, and I need a better resolution (1366x768) because I have 15.6'' screen. My graphic card is Intel GMA4500MHD UMA but in the Device Manager-Displey adapter it says Standard VGA Graphics Adapter. When I tried to Update Driver it wouldn't allow me and it said: Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date. Please help me!!!

A:can't change resolution on my notebook

Ok, I may have found a solution, but I still need help. I should change some registry keys for Group policy settings, and I have found this: Download details: Group Policy Settings Reference for Windows and Windows Server
and I have downloaded it for Windows 7. I found there those 2 settings I need to change in order to prevent windows from automatically install it's own driver for my graphic card (number 173 and number 186 in the excel file) but I've never changed registry keys before. Can someone help me with that? All I know is I should use regedit program to do that...
