I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Hi: Run this free hardware analyzer that I have zipped up and attached below. Run the file, close the summary window and on the left side of the window, click to expand the Drives section. Then click to expand the sata/atapi drives section. Click on your hard drive name listed there. The first line will be the Drive Controller spec. It will report the hard drive type running at a certain speed. For example Serial ATA 6 Gb/s @ 6 Gb/s. If your notebook only has a SATA II port, it might report Serial ATA 6 Gb/s @ 3 Gb/s, or Serial ATA 3 Gb/s @ 3 Gb/s.

Do you see anything on the screen when you switch on? Any fan noise? It should start briefly then find the hard drive missing, as long as there is power(?)

How to reset TCP/IP by using the NetShell utility
Guys I am looking for a new notebook, and I have general idea of what I want, but I am unable to find anything comparable so far (in reasonable price range, I.e. about 1,500$). Here are the specs which I've in mind:

GT760M (or similar range GPU)
SSD Boot drive + 1 TB HDD
15.x 1080p display
I have no preference for any brand, although, in last few years I've bought HP notebooks, generally because I have good connections there in case there is some issues
Specify dual or quad core CPU.

Did this laptop come with Windows 7 Ultimate or did you purchase the OS and thus installed it?
Best bet for you is to get the HP Recovery CD or DVD for your model it will have all the drivers needed for your model. Basically it will install the HP Factory Windows 7 along with everything that's suppose to go with it. This process takes a few hours to run.
So contact HP Tech support tell them you need the Recovery CD/DVD for Model HP laptop. There is a cost for this so be aware. Then you won't have these issues saying graphic driver stopped because you don't have the correct drivers etc. The HP recovery will have all those installed.
Also with every HP system you get recovery with it but it's on the HD in it's own partition so whatever got installed might have blown out that partition and now you have an issue.

Hi, I have run chkdsk couple times and keep getting about 4 bad sectors. With bad sectors I cannot backup my image on any backup program even windows. It will fail about half way through it. Does anyone know of a program that will bypass the bad sectors and back it up. Thanks. I am open for any solutions here.
Hi all just need a little help from you smarter people.
I have lots of devices on my wireless all work fine until this Hp notebook starts it seems to kick everything else off the network. So now called the death machine by all the family. Is this just a setting on the notebook that causes this? It happens on all networks that it joins to and stops as soon as the computer goes back into sleep.
Any help would be most appreciated
Likely you have an IP address conflict - - two machines with the same address.
This will cause problems with everything attached to that same router (wifi or wired).
Make sure ALL devices do not use manual settings but rather use automatic DHCP for both IP and DNS

I don't think I could do that. Too much of a gamble.
You'd also need a new battery, the screen has issues that can't be fixed, and a couple of 'should be ok' comments in there too.
That's my two yen.
I powered down the machine yesterday (Shut Down) and now this morning the computer will not boot.
When I try to boot the machine the BIOS screen does not appear, the HD light flickers on but then stays off. All other lights on the machine are on as normal. The fan kicks in within 30 seconds and sounds like it's running at maximum revs.
I did a hard reset and reseated the HD and the RAM and replaced the RTC battery without fixing the issue.
I will disassemble the unit and make sure the fan is not clogged, in the meantime does anyone have any thoughts ?
The motherboard has probably failed do to consistent overheating over time...
I'm using Windows 7 and a ASUS X54C Notebook.
While my laptop is charged, no matter how I shutdown, whether it be on start command or closing the lid, the laptop refuses to shut all the way off, the power just stays on. I already set the options to shut it down whether the power is being charged or not when closing the lid.
Try doing a factory restore, after backing up your important files
I'm using Windows 7, a ASUS X54C Notebook and a DLink WBR-1310 router.
For some reason when I reboot my notebook, the wireless compatibility doen't want to automatically connect to my wireless access point. I have to manually click the wireless icon on the task bar to let the troubleshooter connect my notebook to the internet.
I already have the options under properties and services.msc via WLAN AutoConfig enabled to connect automatically at start up, but that doesn't seem to help.
Anyone have any ideas?

I fixed a friends W7 wireless connection last week but don't remember the steps, good luck.
I have a HP Presario CQ62 notebook that just totally died.
I closed it up after using it normally, came back and opened the lid and it was dead. No lights, not even power supply indicator light. Nothing happens when the power button is pushed of course.
I thought and hoped it was a faulty power supply and a flat battery, but I have a spare power supply so this was able to be ruled out.
Not that it's relevant here, but it's running Windows 7 64 bit.
Anyone got any ideas where to look for a solution to this? As it won't fire up on battery or power it has to be after those.
Remove the memory and re install it... Remove the battery and try AC power only. With the battery out and AC out, hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Re install the battery and see if the laptop powers up
Hi, so I have a very basic Notebook very cheap MSI A6300 nothing amazing.
So any way It needed a wipe I did, and now it can't find its graphics card, it should say ATI Radeon HD 4270 but it just says Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.
I am thinking its come loose or its been hit or something, I have run MSI Live Update 5 with no hope. It can't find it either.
Should I take a look inside? (Never rlly messed with laptops/Notebooks before, I do all my work on a desktop)
If you need anymore information or specs then I will get them asap! =D
You might be just missing the driver for your graphics card, try searching Techspot (or Google) for "MSI A6300 drivers", download the the video drivers for your notebook.
Hope this helps.
I am having trouble fixing an HP G60 230CA Notebook PC. The Laptop uses a 32 bit Windows Vista OS. It takes about 4 min to Start up and it takes about 2 min to open or close any programs.
In safe mode it runs normally for about 45 sec then enters the same state as normal mode.
I removed the hard drive and used a SATA to USB wire to connect it to another PC to run Malware bytes. Malware Bytes detected and removed a trojan but the problem hasn't changed.
How ole is the computer. How old is the hard drive? How much memory is installed? What scans have you already run to search out the cause of the problem?
First thing I would do is save all my data and images to recoverable media, and run a clean re-install.
I have a HP Pavillion dv5000 and would like to replace the cmos battery due to charging issues. I can't find the darn thing. I removed the keyboard and the wifi card and NO battery. I removed the ram sticks also to see and still no battery. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Seems easy but you try lookin in this machine lol

I have a Hp Pavilion with a 4.2 score, AMD Turion II P560 Dual-Core 2.50GHz, 4gb ram 300 gb storage, and a AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250. I can play games like minecraft well on High performance and HD, 3D graphics but I want to play more games like Battlefield and Black Ops, MW2 MW3 -Beta. I use Game booster but it only seems to end my processes, how can i run my laptop to be faster for gaming without lag?
go into battery settings and change to high performance, also most the time with laptops specs dont handle like there advertised due to battery and "saving space" issues. On top of that just try doing the normal, clear off empty hdd space, and use a good defrag program like auslogics and optimize to read the data faster. Trust me gaming is hard enough with just BF2 on my dinosaur of a laptop stuck to windowed resolutions of 800x600
it possible to place a ATI Radeon HD 5750 in a HP pavillion slimline?
I want to know because i just bought just cause 2 for pc and i dont have the right Graphics card so im planning to buy the graphics card.
btw im 13 so i cant afford everything.
thanks for your help
UPDATE: the version of the PC is S3330f
From the information I could gather 8800GT is 9" long and roughly 4.7" high. Whereas, this XFX HD 5750 is 7.9" by 4.4". So if these measurements are true to your existing system, you should be ok with this card.
I'm looking for a little 10-inch laptop for schoolwork and browsing, not gaming or anything intense like that.
Looking for what recommended minimum specs I should be on the lookout for.
I'm considering this little Samsung 10.1" Netbook featuring Intel Atom N455 Processor (N145)
My local pc folks are selling it for $400 CAD tax included, including $73 upgrade from 1G ram to 4G.
I'd rather buy from a local store than purchase online, if not for reliability of purchase and continued support options.
What is the ratio between Canada and US when it comes to money? According to that link the system is on sale until 8/11 for $219.00.
The biggest issues for me would be that the Best Buy offer only has a) Windows 7 Starter installed; not even Home Premium, b) no need for 4 gigs if the operating system is only 32-bit because only a 64-bit OS will utilize 4 gigs and more RAM, c) the Intel Atom is slow.
So, IMO, it isn't worth $400 locally as is and again no need for 4 gigs if the OS is 32-bit. Shop around more and search for a Lenovo x120e system.
Im not very good with computers, I only really know how to turn it on and type.
I got a HP Pavilion dv4 1465dx notebook last year. The RAM is 4.00 GB, and the Harddrive is 194GB free of 286 GB. It uses Windows Vista.
My sister has all of Sims2 games and expansions.
I always try and diskcleanup and get rid of unneccessary things when I can, but ive always wanted to play games with my friends but couldnt since I got it and BEFORE my sis put sims on it. Often I feel like my older desktop is faster than this.
I was wondering if there was anything I can do? When i googled many people said 4.00 GB RAM was enough to play games so im not really sure why its so slow.
Download and run free Surperantispyware and tell us what it finds. What antivirus program is installed?

Hey Techspotters I recently acquired a new Compaq Presario CQ - SA notebook with a year warranty Problem is after two weeks the display appeared with vertical and cracked internally CQ56 notebook Compaq LCD 101SA horizontal white lines and in the top left hand corner a bright white and blue blobbed image appeared and has gotten bigger from top left heading to bottom right I immediately informed Compaq Compaq CQ56 101SA notebook cracked LCD internally HP who arranged to have my laptop collected and sent for repair under warranty I subsequently received a call from HP Engineering Dept that the LCD screen had been cracked inside there is no physical external damage Compaq CQ56 101SA notebook cracked LCD internally due to undue pressure or knock to the screen and that it was deemed as accidental damage and not covered under warranty Now I can categorically say that to my knowledge nothing untoward has happened to this laptop it is weeks old I open it and then I close it and it has had normal use for the weeks that i have had it HP wanted to fix it Compaq CQ56 101SA notebook cracked LCD internally or alternatively return it free of charge unfixed No amount of persuasive talk from me would change her mind so I opted to have the notebook returned to me Now I could fix this as a new LCD screen is relatively cheap to purchase - online but I fear that if I do this it will invalidate my year warranty Has anyone else had any similar issues with Compaq and HP notebooks or have I just been extremely unlucky here and suffered a night gremlin notebook attack I would very much appreciate advice on what my rights are or if anyone else has had similar with HP Compaq Many thanks for taking the time to read reply Regards nbsp
I've had to install a new lcd screen in a toshiba about 3 years ago. I was very careful to not leave striped screws or scratched paint near any of the screw holes. a year later my hdd died and my laptop was still under warranty( extended which i purchased) and they installed a new hdd.
That was a few years ago and a different company. I'm not sure about other experiences, but in mine I believe since I didn't visibly damage anything they couldn't have known if I opened it or not at any time.
I need to find a way to cause the display to rotate into portrait orientation automatically when the screen is flipped from notebook to tablet mode The trick is I need to do this WITHOUT running Dell s quot Control Point quot utility The reason DCP also spits out annoying how to auto-rotate? screen - Dell make Tablet/notebook XT2 popups saying that the battery is charging normally however you may need to replace it soon quot Soon quot being the halfway point from quot brand new quot to quot really need to replace it quot In other words there s still plenty of time Dell says the users can just ignore it until the message changes to quot Your battery life is decreasing quot at life Not helpful I found that DCP was responsible for generating the popups and shut it off Unfortunately it also stopped the auto-rotate feature SO what I need to figure out is how to stop DCP from spitting out Dell XT2 Tablet/notebook - how to make screen auto-rotate? the popups quot It will be fixed in the next release quot Says Dell OR I need to find some utility setting whatever that will turn the auto-rotate feature back on without having to have DCP running all the time These are vista machines BTW Thanks in advance for any suggestions nbsphttp://www.techspot.com/community/topics/dell-xt2-tablet-notebook-how-to-make-screen-auto-rotate.159253/

The primary internal battery might be the motherboard CMOS battery. Sounds like the hard drive may have gone bad... Once you get the laptop to boot, you can address the weak CMOS battery. Can you get into the boot devices in the bios at all?
Hi - I have a Gateway EC18 with a very loud fan and wouldn't you know it, the warranty just expired.
So I went to the gateway support site and typed in the serial number and looked at the vendors for parts but no fan is listed.
Where should I look for a replacement fan?
do you think this is what you are looking for?
There isn't any picture, but the model number matches up. I'm not sure how easy it will be to take apart. I have broken down a few laptops and they are complicated. In the mean time, I recommend you get a laptop cooling stand.
Okay so I'm not technologically savvy but I'm guessing to make most of the games that I download to actually run, I need a better graphics card?
Whenever I play games with decent to good graphics, my system just won't function right. They lag until my computer freezes and stuff. So I just wanna know what I can do to actually play games.

Processor: Intel (R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5450 @ 1.66GHz 1.67GHz

Windows Vista Home Premium
I'm not sure what other info I would need to show you guys
I'm willing to spend around 150 or less dollars on stuff I would need to make this computer run better for games

Hi I need to replace a screen on the above laptop - however I am unsure which screen I need - there seems to be one with a dual back light - and a 17.3" screen size as wellas the 17" - any ideas how I could find out which part I need ?
Look on the back of the screen itself there should be some numbers on the back of the screen type model number from the back of the screen into google or eBay that will give you the correct screen.
hello im new member to this forum.. i hope i will get a appropriate solution to my problem
The problem is my brand new laptop (acer d260) dont turn on.. its brand new. using it for first time. never switched on before.. dont even see the power light glowing after i plugin the batter charging Adapter..
Are you sure your wall socket is getting power?
my lap top freezes when i turn it on. the only thing i get is a black screen with hp invent in the middle. i put a disc in with windows xp home edition on it to try to swipe the computer but when i turn it on i cant even get to boot from disc. any ideas?
That unit is old enough to have begun some problems with the hard drive... or heat from dust, dirt, fiber...
Clean out thoroughly with canned air and denatured alcohol.
Can you put the drive in an external USB enclosure to see if you can access the data on another computer? If so, look for the SMART test results.
HP has used in that model Hitachi, Samsung, Western Digital, and Seagate... so it would be helpful to know more about the hard drive installed.
Luckily hard drives are very low cost nowadays... so I would look for another at Frys, NewEgg, Directron, CDW, Zipzoomfly, or other supplier and see if you can install windows to it... If you need help, let us know.
But there have been a lot of system board failure reports... due to excess heat.
What is the age of that laptop and components.?
my acer powered down by itself like the power had run out but it hadnt....so i had to force shutdown...since then it wont switch back on the connection light just flashes twice slowly instead of several times like normal and the screen remains black... i have tried all the remove battery and ac tricks and nothing is working ,,,,any ideas ?????????
Have you wiped the RAM and the deep sleep settings by unplugging it from the AC adapter and also removing the battery, then waiting half an hour?
Before going to work this morning I put my computer on hibernate, when I came back my wifi networking was down. It is not that I am connected to a network but cannot open internet, my wifi network does not start up. The little red light does not turn blue! I have no idea why it is not working, any suggestions appreciated.
Hey, reasons for the light not to turn blue could be a problem with the physical hardware itself, being that it somehow shorted or something along those lines.
Another reason could be that it is not being supplied power, once a computer goes into hibernation mode it is given the right to stop power to that device, and possibly once starting back up, there was no power given to the Wireless? Have you tried to shutdown the computer normally and try it again? Another reason would be that the wireless settings and everything are all controlled by a service, and maybe the service failed to start. Rather then get you to go to the exact spot and try and turn on the service, just restart the computer. If that doesn't work and you want to try and manually start the service, reply back that you would like to do so and I will try and step you through it.
Other things to try - Reinstall the drivers for the wireless adapter, you will need to go to HP's website, type in your DV9500 as well as the other numbers on the bottom of the laptop on a white sticker, located near your prodocut key usually...
if you are comfortable with opening the laptop up, on the bottom side of the laptop, one of the covers will likely have the wireless card in side, it is connected by 2 wires, a black and a white, if you go to take the card out remember where each cord goes. You can take the card out, boot up the computer, shut it down, reseat the card, and boot up the computer, see if anything comes up..
WARNING: If attempting to remove the wireless adapter card, please be aware that if the card is not damaged, you could damage the card, make sure you are grounded when working inside of the laptop, as well make sure that there is NO POWER to the laptop, this means Remove both the battery and the power cord..
Nothing else comes to mind of what it could be...
If you can't get it to work, try safe mode with networking, if still nothing, I would suggest to bring it to a shop to see if they have a way to test the physical card in a similar laptop or possibly have a new card to test in yours..
EDIT: This is something I found on the Mobile section of this forum where a fix was found on other HP Dv**** Models,
WARNING:Please read the full post that suggests the fix, as it does warn that this CAN cause further damage. This test raises the computers core temperature as well as other components to try and warm them up if there are any cold joints on it, But may damage components due to high temperatures. WARNING
i have an hp pavillion dv 6 entertainment notebook ? can i enhance it with new 3 d card?? it has a built it mobile chip set !
General speaking, you cannot upgrade the video card or GPU in a laptop.
my laptop stopped picking up wireless network, it wont' recognized the wireless assistant, I tried every possible solution online (updating bios, reinstalling the drivers, changed the network card) and still nothing. any suggestions? will buying a usb wireless adapter give me the option to connect to wireless networks?
Welcome to the club and I don't say that sarcastically; I feel your pain. This is quite a well known problem with HP's DV 6000 series; a series that had MAJOR failures with their motherboards due to poor cooling. Their 9000 series also had epic fails. One tech guy that I know told me that in their shop the wireless card failing was the beginning sign of motherboard issues.
Its not your wireless card per se though. I speak from personal experience as my daughter's wireless connection died as well. I even replaced the card and it still didn't work. I also did everything you mentioned plus I followed HP's instructions. I even contacted them and the cost to fix was rediculous. They even said it most likely is a motherboard issue after I did everything they instructed to resolve the issue.
So to answer your last question: Yes, a USB wireless adapter will work. It did for my daughter and we hope this system will last us till she graduates this coming May.

It almost sounds as though Windows no longer detects a sound card....
Check your BIOS. Is there any setting Enable / Disable Onboard Audio?
Report on any BIOS settings, then Generate a Problem Device report
Make sure all your devices are connected and powered on
Click Start->Run, enter: msinfo32. Click the + sign next to Components to expand it
Click Problem Devices. Anything appear?
If yes, click on it, Ctrl-A to select all, Ctrl-C to copy it, Ctrl-V to paste into next post
Generate and attach a DirectX report
click Start->Run, enter dxdiag
Notice progress in lower left window corner
When done, click Save Information button and save to your Desktop
In TechSpot, use the paper clip icon to attach the report. (If you don't see icon you may need to first click Go Advanced)
I own a Hp Pavillion dv6700 laptop and recently it wouldn't turn on for more than a few seconds. I tried troubleshooting by removing the battery and turning it on just with the powersupply, no difference. Vice versa.
I purchased another charger to see if that would help. Despite trying different combinations with chargers, batter in/out, the computer still only turns on for a few seconds(nothing comes up on the screen) and then turns itself off.
Reading some other forums similiar to this problem has yielded no help.
Another thing - the port that I plug the power supply into it seems like the cord can move around a bit.

We figured it out finally. We had to reset the router to factory settings and then connect the hp laptop first and now everything is online.

probably opened the machine and messed up with the video card.
Wondering if anyone can help me?
My old notebook's (XP) screen died, so I bought a new ASUS one running Windows 7.
I put the old notebook's hdd into a USB to IDE enclosure hoping to get bookmarks, music etc off it.
When it's plugged in, "USB to IDE" shows up in devices, and it is also an option when disconnecting USB devices, but I can't see the drive in order to access it in "Computer" and see what's on it.
Anyone know how to get the stuff off the old drive?
Look in Disk Management to see if the old drive is visible there. It may just need to have a drive letter assigned to it.
We have a laptop that we use downstairs that died and needs to be replaced. I have been looking at netbooks my husband at notebooks.
What we really need it to do is:
connect to our network
I would like to run victuals on it but not a deal breaker
use for very lite travel mostly by car
lite pic editing (resizing and little things)
I am thinking a netbook would be perfect, won't take up too much space and easy to travel with ( and...well they are so darnn cute!) Hubby wants small notebook. His one complaint is he has heard the video is bad on netbooks. I have seen a few and don't think it is too bad, I mean it isn't great for watching movies but how often does anyone watch a movie on a computer?
Anyone have an opinion net or note? Any bad net experiences?
I own two myself but I am having issues with ASUS one. The one I am not having issue is ACER. Both are pretty much the same in features. They can run Office 2010, Play Youtube Videos up to 480p. Best you get one with 802.11g,n and the latest N450 suppose to handle HD better. Slight improvement from last year models. Best to get 2GB of RAM 160GB is standard most of 250GB. Small screen though to view though lite enough to carry anywhere. if you get one the battery with 6 to 9 cell is better than 3 cell. Otherwise you'll have to keep it plugged in for power to have it charged.
hi well i im planing to buy a logitech x540 sound system but it needs a sound card 5.1 or somthing i use vista and i have a emachines e625 laptop can please tell me how to find out or what it is im a noob i only know the basics but this is the first time i have really wonderd about my sound card thanks for your help and support
p.s i posted on the rang forum can admin or mod delete it please thanks again and sorry
on your laptop you got only one output and one input
the output is for headset and may be used with stereo speakers, or 2.1 system, means there are 2 speakers for left and right and a sub.
but now comes your problem.
what you are plannig to buy is a 5.1 speaker system and means it got 5 speakers and a sub.
that means it have more than one connector. it haves tree connectors:
one for sub and the center speaker,
one for the front speakers left and right,
and the last one for the rear speakers left and right.
you will need a 5.1 usb sound card if you still want to have the logitech x540 speaker system and use it on you're laptop.
ok so i have a dv hp pavillion with win vista home premium actually the laptop is a series but that shouldnt matter to much just for some of you to pinpoint the problem more accurately First of all thanks for reading and trying to diagnose this wierd problem Problem is as states i originally found a problem with my laptop shortly turning it off one day the problem was that when i closed the lid on the laptop shortly after it would shut down as in not sleep but i could hear the hdd awkardly turn on hear the fan then it would kick off and power problem hp pavillion Laptop lid dv9000 i could hear the hdd loose power like if you were to unplug a from a usb connection passed it as a power issue and quickly went into the power settings to make sure that hybrid hybernation was turned off that sleep was the only option for lid Laptop dv9000 hp pavillion lid power problem closings and there were no timers on and everything is how it should have been and dismissed the problem once again shortly after noticing this problem it the power issue when i close the lid became more of an instant thing like it would try to sleep only to have the computer go into a state loosing power all together as i shut the lid or something to that effect so i thought that the lid option or some sys driver may have failed or became corrupt over several years of using my laptop so i decided to venture into the old manual and box get the system restore disks and proceed unfortuantely this didnt fix the problem either so i have elimenated several things so far one itts not the power options two its not the OS itself so i thought it may be something else and started to just shut the computer down when i had to close the lid but to my suprise even if i shut the comptuer down via the Fn Fx button or the start shutdown option and waited untill the computer fully shut down and then closed the lid it still did the same thing as i would close the lid it would power on only briefly then shut off as if it would totally loose power so now i am at a standstill and am asking for some help as i have no idea what this is other than the lid switch or something more familiar with these laptop models and it being something more of the internal hardware any help will work and i can post any type of diagnostic data needed thanks ps the laptop is officially a dv cl with a C D ghz processor gb of ddr mhz two hdds one has been replaced the os drive a gb wd black mb cache and the second is the factory installed hitatchi gb storage drive both independent from each other nbsp
Have you tried restoring the laptop to the original purchased state? Or even doing a Windows Restore to an earlier time?
So my laptop can't boot...or it can't even get the power on, the "power" / "charging" light blinks 8 times and nothing...
where can I find some instructions or do someone know what's the problem?
Did you check the HP forum?
So I'm having problems installing Windows XP on my HP laptop.
Thew windows setups says that it can't find a hdd?! -same **** that the bios says
The only little thingy with it is that the laptop can boot from the hdd with vista...so why
can't it find the hdd?!
I have tried with an other hdd and there is still the same problem :/
So what to do?
Try resetting the bios to its default settings, or even try a bios update, using a USB stick
I have an HP Pavilion dv5000 CTO Notebook. It had been working pretty good for a while and all of a sudden, I picked up a virus. I got rid of the virus but after a few reboots, I notice I could not evern get to the Windows XP splash screen without it freezing. I've tried hitting F8 to login to Safe mode. I have tried putting in my recovery CD. Nothing works. It freezes and I am forced to do a hard shut down and start all over again. I am taking any and all suggestions (that make sense) at this point. Thanks in advance
laptops are notoriously hard to pinpoint a fault with, from what you say it sounds like a HDD issue,
download the makers test tool and run checks on the drive, it may be coincidental that the virus hit at the same time the drive was on its way out.
Yes the laptop will look for the HDD before booting from a cd/dvd and will freeze if it cant find it...

Hello, at Christmas i bought a notebook PC. It had features like a webcam, and they did not work. So we took it back and bought a hp pavilion dv6 PC. It has a 64-bit operating system, GB free local disk with 396 free and windows 7 for an operating system. i download some music, i have messenger, and i have internet explore to browse and use Facebook, yet it my PC is working like a piece of crap, Ive been in my recycling bin and deleting everything i get a chance at. My browsing history is deleted, i have Norton if that could be the case but i have the "NEW" Norton which is suppose to be better the sales man told me. Please post a comment when you get a chance .
Please follow these 8-steps and post all the logs here for review and further advice.
This laptop came with home basic - but the install is in such a state. I want to reinstall it. Unfortunatley I don't have a home basic install DVD and the recovery partition has been deleted.
I was trying to install xp - but it blue screens - there is no option in the bios for AHCI - which usually does the trick. Interestingly the bois lists the HDD as IDE but per the gateway web site this model has a PATA hard drive ? (confused)
So does anybody have any idea how I can install xp pro on this Laptop.
Or does anyone know where I can get a copy of home basic - as I have a valid license key ?
If you are reinstalling it would be good idea to delete your old partition; then create a new one/format it during xp setup and reinstall. If there is no hardware related issue then this should work. Goodluck
i need to upgrade my notebook from gateway its a solo2500
What is the current configuration? Particularly, how much memory do you have?
You re gonna love this one no ANY 6000 now HP display of gone. Disabled recognition driver, Pavillion graphics Lots of quirks along the way So get a laptop from my mom HP Pavillion 6000 display gone. Disabled driver, now no recognition of ANY graphics It was her old one It had been wiped clean It came preloaded with Vista she put XP on it and got frustrated and gave it HP Pavillion 6000 display gone. Disabled driver, now no recognition of ANY graphics to me All the drivers worked great except the graphics driver From searching it appears to be an NVidia Go series Believe I tried the full install from NVidia and the short driver install from HP the only one for this laptop no luck Keeps telling me no drivers are HP Pavillion 6000 display gone. Disabled driver, now no recognition of ANY graphics recognized In my hissy fit I turned off the vgasafe in properties gt Settings gt Advanced gt Monitor Okay no graphics at all Runs great still I use narrator and go into the same settings but as I go through I hear my monkey man speak out that the resolution is x x with no options I continue to advanced where there s nothing The advanced button no longer works So I head to the run command and bring up the Device Manager to enable that way Display Adapter is gone completely I even did a walkthrough to enable from the display Device Manager I try all the boot modes my BIOS has no area for graphics settings Safe with out command sticks at mup sys The other modes leave me black screened I go back in try to install basic and NVidia drivers from a CDRom with Narrator s help again Still says no hardware for NVidia found and the other kept erroring out Here s the quirks I have no Win CD I just got it Ma trashed the disc when I took the laptop and it s XP Home which meant I needed to burn a disc before it died Even so it seems the Recovery solution hasn t worked in the very limited info I ve been Googling for the last hours Display adapter is completely missing Advanced button in the desktop settings doesn t go anywhere I would install my copy of Win XP Pro to get it going but from again the limited info this does not fix the problem either Is the only solution at this point to completely reformat with my own Win XP From there it still seems that the drivers never worked with XP even though HP says they do Am I stuck forever in cheesy blur mode if I stick with XP Thanks in advance hopefully there s some more detailed advice here than what I ve been able to find nbsp
it seams to me what you need to to do is reinstall windows vista and then go from there, if you have some money then go buy windows 7
I have a cnmbook, I just recently charged the screen, when i switched it on the screen is just white with no graphics, I have many of these mini book, the ones that are fully working I taken out the screen's when I put them back they all appear to be white screens, am not sure what it is, I tried unplugging the cables, dose anyone know any thing about this model and how I can resolve the problem
In any case - you have a no POST issue?
Hy, I have now spend more then 20 hours searching for a solution to reset my bios password. I forgot the password as it my old laptop and I need to login to bios to adjust few things. First thing I did was pulling out the cmos battery, the date and time is reset but bios password survives. I tried unlock 6 based on my system hash code 03377 with no luck. Does anyone have any suggestion what else could I do ?
There is a password that cannot be reset by normal means built into the CMOS as an anti-theft measure. There are options on how to reset this password but it is tricky. The best thing you can do is to contact HP support to get it reset.
My almost 3 year old Asus X52 F3SV Notebook suddenly froze and shut itself down today. It will not boot past the 'Asus' logo screen. The furthest it got was 'loading windows', but quickly rebooted once that screen showed up.
It has been running quite hot lately, but i cleaned the fan out last weekend, and it had been running without problem since then.
I'm running Windows Vista Premium, with no other real problems until now, with up to date windows updates and regular Spybot and anti-virus scans.
There were random multicoloured lines running through the Asus screen on the first reboot after freezing. Could it be my graphics card? (Nvidia 8600m). I did not hear any crackling/popping sounds, so I really hope it's not dead yet.
I've looked around these forums, but couldn't find a similar problem/solution.
Try running Bios defaults
This settings area can be called:
even just Setup
You can enter it by pressing the keyboard key that is displayed on your screen when first turning on your computer
A Fn Button like F1, or F2, or F10 or some other Fn key
(whatever the computer states on screen when you first turn on your computer)
Once in Bios Setup, locate Setup Defaults (sometimes called Optimized Defaults)
Apply it, then Save and Exit Bios Settings (which is usually F10, but it will tell you in the Bios Settings screen)
If that doesn't help try reming and re-seating your Ram cards (even your hard drive)
You can download your Manual to find the locations of these components, but they are usually located under the laptop, under the covers
If it is your Video card (onboard) then that was be a big concern
You may need to locate the disassemble guide online, then blow out all internal dust
It may also require a CheckDisk scan
You can read HERE on how to do that outside Windows
Hello I m in the market for a new PC laptop and I m curious about my options for the -- question new graphics cards about Getting notebook graphics card The laptop I m getting will be high-end around to most Getting new notebook -- question about graphics cards likely and of all the sites I ve checked out mainly HP Sony and Dell the best graphics card that I ve seen available for any notebook is the GB Nvidia GeForce GT M there s also the GB ATI Mobility Radeon but I ve read that the GB GeForce is better So my question is -- is the GB GeForce the best graphics card out there that a notebook PC can use or are there better ones that I could buy separately and install myself or have someone install If so I have two other questions First what is Getting new notebook -- question about graphics cards the best or some of the best graphics cards out there that I could buy and have installed on my laptop when I get it and where can I find them Second how would I go about having the graphics card that I purchased separately installed Could I do it myself -- remove the one the came with the laptop and install the one I bought separately or can you install more than one on a single laptop Or would I have to take it to a shop to have them install it for me Any help regarding all or any of these questions will be very very much appreciated Thanks in advance nbsp
I would suggest checking out Alienware (http://www.alienware.com). They are probably the most well known power-house computer manufacture. Check out their M17X laptop and all of the upgrade options.
With regard to installing your own graphics card, I think it really depends on the laptop you get, and from who. A lot of companies are making it easier to get at certain laptop parts, with individual panels on the bottom. I know it's often pretty easy to swap out RAM and I think even hard drives, but I'm not too sure about graphics cards.
Find a laptop you like, and maybe check out some articles about it on the web, or possibly some youtube videos. Many reviewers (including here on Techspot) will give you a picture or two of the bottom, and show you how accessible things are.
I know this didn't fully answer your question, but I hope it helped some
Hello I m in the process of searching for a new PC notebook I m in the market for a to inch display and I ve come across a couple laptops that mention having an quot extra-wide quot display or a quot -degree ultra-wide viewing angle quot and things to that effect I wanted to ask some questions about this Does this extra-wide display entail a better picture or resolution or something like that or is it just wider Will an extra-wide display like this make widescreen bars the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen when watching a movie more likely Will the wider display cause these bars to be bigger or appear more often on movies or games or anything else where they wouldn t have on a regular width display My computer will have a - inch display it will be p and will be Need notebook help "extra-wide" displays with PC Blu-ray enabled I m very concerned with getting the best picture possible so I d like to know if the extra-wide display will contribute to that but I m also heavily Need help with "extra-wide" PC notebook displays annoyed by widescreen bars at the top and bottom of my movies and whatnot so if the primary effect of the extra-wide display is simply a wider screen that will have more bars more often then I d like to know that Any help here is greatly appreciated Thanks in advance nbsp
It really depends as much on the graphics card as the screen itself, and there is no reliable way to know. You have to see it setup and play with the display settings.
However, If you select a true high end laptop should be fine. Others will make the images look stretched, but user quickly get used to it. One would think that 1080p would be a guarantee of good screen performance, but it is not.
If you are getting a computer that is in the upper third of its price and model range, you usually get the good screen combination in my experience... HP, Dell, Sony, and Lenovo anyway. You will have to avoid budget laptops.
I tried to install windows onto my laptop. It went through the set up process, but when it got to the install part, I got an error message stating that Windows could not find a HDD installed on my computer. So, thinking something was wrong with the HDD, I bought a new Wester Digital HDD. After installing the new HDD, I again tried installing windows, with the same outcome. Someone has told me that Compaq is bad about putting "blinder" codes in their BIOS to hide the HDD from being overwritten. I called Compaq Tech Support, but because my warranty is out, they wanted an arm and a leg to "help". Is there any truth to this? Does anyone have a solution for this problem?
If this is a SATA hard drive, you need to install SATA controller drivers at the F6 prompt. Since this procedure needs a floppy drive and you probably don't have one, go into the BIOS and see if you can change the controller from SATA or AHCI mode to IDE mode. If have this option, then Setup should continue.
hi my name is thomas has anyone come across this fault
hp pavillion dv 6500 blank screen
It is an issue that has been reported before. How old is your DV6500? And what is the model number from the label on the back?
My HP Pavillion Laptop has stopped booting. I only get the blue powerlights to flash briefly once. I have tried removing the battery, disconnecting the bios battery - all to no avail.
Following hp's troubleshooting guides, this points to a cpu failure - is it worth replacing the CPU (AMD) - or does the whole motherboard need replacing.
There have been huge issues with that series of HP laptops... I suggest you call HP and discuss the problem. HP has recently admitted some of these problems and has accommodated some owners with repairs, even out of warranty repairs.
It is my understanding that it is a motherboard problem, and the CPU is fine... but my info is all second hand... so call HP and be persistent.
HP DV6000 notebook,
has a nvidia go 7200 vid card
was having issues with secondary monitor, so went to reinstall the drivers. a bunch of posts suggested using these custom video drivers from http://www.tweakforce.com and i foolishly figured it couldn't break anything.
Restarted after install to no image and post beeps: one long and 3 short which im assuming is something video related.
I pulled the hd figuring i would just delete the driver files, but even with the hd unplugged i get the same beep which leads me to believe that the driver install somehow altered the bios.
Suggestions? i don't even know a way to reset a notebook bios.
I should note that i think it had a phoenix bios, though not 100%
I am working on a HP laptop with a Wireless-G Notebook Adapter. It shows I am connected to a wireless network. The lights are on on the card its self but I can not connect to the internet. The laptop is running XP. Any help would be great.
What encryption are you using on your router?
Is there any messages in the system tray like "limited or no connectivity"?
What router are you using?

Nice machine and configuration.
I would first try removing two memory modules, and attempting a boot with the third.. then if that doesn't work, change modules until you have tried all three.
It is difficult to trouble-shoot a machine like that... but we are seeing a LOT of ealy failures in the large laptops hard drives from 250 GB to 500 GB, so suspect that your hard drive might be bad. A good test would be to try any other known good hard drive from 80 GB on up to 500 GB... can you borrow one, then try to format and install it.
If still dead when you change memory and hard drive, it is time to get it back to HP for warranty work.
Anything you do that is not memory and not a hard drive will void your warranty.
Hi and let me just thank anyone who reads this beforehand I recently purchased a Gateway P- u laptop Operating System Windows Vista Home Premium Build Service Pack vistasp gdr - System Manufacturer Gateway BIOS Ver PARTTBL Processor Intel R Core TM Duo CPU P GHz CPUs GHz Memory MB RAM Page File MB used MB available Harddrive Model Hitachi HTS L error? - drive hard hangs randomly Notebook A It was a dream for the first or so days One time I was drain testing the battery and the computer shut itself off due to a dead battery Notebook randomly hangs - hard drive error? I mistakenly thought Vista would automatically put it to sleep or something I plugged it in and everything was good to go Later that night or the next day my computer crashed I did not find the reason but the following day when I tried to turn it back on I had to go through the quot repair your computer quot option and everything seemed fixed Later I got a Lexmark X printer and after installing the software my computer refused to work It booted once but hung within a minute of logging in and after that I received a system service exception x B error for all options repair normal boot last working configuration safe boot Finally I had to use my recovery disk to get it working and upon installing the software again I thought it was causing problems so I entered safe mode and removed it Two days later and I m still having problems with hanging except now I can hear my harddrive behaving strangely When I was using AVG to scan my computer it hung and I had to restart Using CHKDSK it repaired some files including an avg log but it froze at stage at I forced shutdown and tried again and it froze at the same empty sector I m logged on again and everything seems to work but occasionally my drive would make these repetitive clicking noises and then go silent and my harddrive usage light will just light periodically The computer is hung at that point and I can still move my mouse but that s it I can t go to repair your computer option when booting up because I get the system service exception Speedfan s SMART analysis says my drive is healthy and so does Vista s Computer Management but I m at a loss as to what to do - how can I tell if its a hardware failure for sure Also I haven t been able to get iTunes to detect my iPhone after I used Gateway Recovery not sure if that has any correlation Thanks in advance and sorry about the lengthy post nbsp
Bad drives are not "unheard of".
I once bought a laptop where the hard-drive crashed in a matter of two weeks...
the seller just replaced my computer with a new one.
Sounds like you are still under warranty. I would suggest that as your first option.
Back up your data files, if you can...
Something like Apricorn's utility -might- help you, even if you cannot recover data through other means.
I recently had to replace the mother board in my HP Pavillion a620n because of a nearby lightning strike. The replacement was done by a certified technician. Now when I shut the PC down I must turn off the powe strip it is connected to, turn the power stip back on and then press the power button on the top right of the PC case.
Prior to the replacement all I had to do was press the power buitton. I have checked all power settings etc and they are correct.
When I turn the power strip back on the hard drive accesss light flickers, the DVD drive light flashes and the fan start. I then pust the power button and the computer boots.
The power supply is the first piece of hardware to be hit by a power surge. it also may have been damaged
one of my fans cuts off after 4 seconds and zv5000 pavilion will not boot. How much to fix fan??
Is it just the fan cutting out or does the whole machine turn off as well?
Do you see anything on the screen at all in the couple of seconds it stays on?

I have found from personal experience that HP is decent on responding to upgrade questions. They should be able to tell you what can and cannot be upgraded and then buy the parts from a cheaper source.
New here any help would be ridiculously appreciated!!
Here's my issue, I have a laptop that trys to boot then comes back with an error of an invalid partition table.
I have tried to re-format it with the operating system (XP Home) it gets to a point and the machine just shuts down. Won't re-format.
I have tried to run memtest86+ on it and it does the same thing, runs for a bit but then the machine shuts down. I did notice while running memtest that one of the categories.. Chipset stated it was disabled, is that a sign of a dead motherboard??
CAN I FIX THIS AT ALL??????
Microsoft's Windows XP Home Repair Install step by step (* Including Delete Partition)
* Warning deleting the Partition will remove all User data and Windows system files
Can be done on HP or Dell as well Actually any Windows computer
Oh I removed your not required reply on the memtest guide too
When I put my hp dv9500t to sleep the screen goes blank but it does not turn off. If i press a key or touch the touchpad it comes back on, flases "locking computer" then gives me the windows login screen. The weird thing is that it only does this when it is plugged in. I am using vista ultimate. Whats the deal with this?? Im totally stumped. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
two quick things
1) are you sure all windows updates/fixes have been applied?
2) Go to the hp site. Click Support. look up your model number and check if they have a fix/answer to your problem

Help! I've got a problem with my laptop keyboard. The touchpad works fine but every time I try using the keyboard, everything freezes. Even the volume control buttons on the side of the laptop won't work. Right now the keyboards are disabled, saying that they've been disabled since the drivers may be corrupt or missing. I've been using the on-screen keyboard, but it's so hard to type documents. I hope you can give me advice on how to resolve this. Thanks much!
BTW, my laptop's model is ze4908us (i mixed 8 & 0 on the title) ==sorry!
Hi rhaiven29, please first confirm that all your System Drivers are up to date
You can do this by going here and clicking on "Start Detection" button http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic100655.html

Just wondering if you got your problem fixed. I have a similar problem trying to use a Samsung 216BW with a Toshiba laptop with the Intel 915 Chipset. When I set the resolution to 1680 X 1050 which is what it is suppose to be, everything is not visible on my screen. I too have played with this for about 3 days.Installing and uninstalling drivers. If anyone has any thought or solutions, they would be greatly appreciated!
I have a Toshiba M40, recently It will not always start? power cord is reading 15.0 vdc, blue and yellow lights on in the front panel, when the switch is depressed the blue led ring only blinks. But sometimes when you depress the power button it works fine. Lately it starts harder and harder. Any suggestions?
Try another power cords, passed that it sounds like a failing hard drive to me.
My MSI GX630 just froze on me. It would take no input from the keyboard, the touchpad the mouse.. nothing. I had to remove the battery to restart it. this is not he first time it's happened. I was running just firefox and messenger and left the it for a while and came back to find it frozen like that. Any help plz?
It may be overheating... If you can disassemble a laptop yourself, you could check to see if the fan(s) and cooling fins were clean and free from dust and debris. If you can't do this yourself, you will have to take it to someone who can
i need some help, I have the above mentioned notebook about two years old. It was having spells of no display while power lights and CPU fans, and humming starts,no HP Invent Logo or password prompt but usually after a day or two it would start functioning normally. No message of window being shut off improperly it would start as if nothing happened. This started occuring more and more frequently scanned for viruses nothing, I sent it over to HP service centre they reformatted the thing and said could not detect the problem. Now for the past four days it is gone blank and not restarting. I am in foreign land on a fellowshipand lot of my material is on this machine, can someone help me in any manner I will appreciate it very much. Machine runs on Windows Vista home.

I read the posting CM Lanman, explaining basicially the very same problem I'm experiencing with HP Pavillion zt3000 laptop. When I boot the computer up, all I get is a black screen, any help out there.
Can you boot all the way into Normal Mode at all (if there's a problem you may have to wait like ten mins) ?
Can you boot into Safe Mode successfully ?

I recently installed vista 64-bit. Now sometimes my notebook monitor shuts down to black and pc hangs. Only solution is the power off button for a few seconds. And no log is created when this event occur.
PC temperature is OK. I should also have the latest drivers for the hardware.
I disabled "automatically restart at system error" but i still don't get the blue screen.
Could it be the monitor itself?
Go back to Vista 32 bit... Evidently the 64 bit video driver is not compatible with your system

yes there is a device you can buy to connect it usb, however, if that drive is defective it will probably just be a defective drive connected through usb. there are utilities that can scan for physical drives to recover data if the drive is damaged. A program called "getdataback" may do the trick for you
