I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My system is 4 years old.

The motherboard is a MSI - MS 6585
Chipset SiS 648
ATX Form Factor.
CPU - Socket 478 for P4 processors (Willimate 478 and Northwood 478)
with 400/533 MHz (100/133Mhz QDIR)

Mine is a 2.8 GHz

I have 1GB of RAM - PC2700

I cannot seem to find a replacement mobo.

This is my first time changing a mobo.

Because my CPU and chipset are as above - am I restricted to what
replacement board I buy?

In other words, do I have to locate a motherboard with the
exact specs as my old board has?

Or can I upgrade to a more modern one.

I'm really in the dark here - any help would be appriciated.

Thanks, Stephen

A:Need To Replace Motherboard

It's always best to do a clean install of your OS when changing the motherboard in order to prevent any sort of driver / hardware conflict.

However, there are ways to avoid a full install of the OS. Read through the following links:

I just ordered a new Asus A7V333 motherboard and would like to replace my old ECS motherboard myself.

I know how to physically remove the old one and put in the new one but what I'd really like to know is if I need to delete any or all drivers that pertain to the old motherboard (audio driver and such).

Any other advice to make the transition any smoother would also be greatly appreciated.

Hi all - I tried to find this in the forum first - it may be I just don't know what to look for and if so, I apologize. My T61 (6459-CTO) has a bad motherboard.  It's still a great machine and I'd like to replace the motherboard.  Can someone point to: (a) somewhere where I can figure out which motherboard to replace it with (and if possible, a source) and(b) instructions/video on how to do the replacement? Thanks Mark

Instructions on how to disassemble the computer and replace the motherboard should be in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM).  Sorry, I don't have the link but you should be able to search for it on this forum.

So I didn't look on google before I put in a new motherboard and CPU, and now my computer won't boot at all. Even when I try to do a repair installation it always fails when it comes to the reboot bit.

Are there any solutions for this, I don't fancy losing all of my files.

A:Motherboard and CPU replace - will not boot

If you didn't prepare the drive before the move and also Repair install fails, your options are getting limited. What I would do is install another drive and put your OS on it with a clean install. Then, take the drive with your data on and put it in there as a slave so you could get your data off.

A:Can I replace Processor on motherboard?

Sure its possible.

What processor are you looking to upgrade to? If you are upgrading to a p4, you should make sure your mobo supports that processor. Give me a little more info on what you are trying to upgrade to. Do you have the mobo book. It should say what processors it supports.

Hi, I want to update my system. Im hoping to get a new motherboard, processor, and ram. im hoping for the ram to be 2048mb and the processor to be around 2.4ghz. also if the videocard could be agp on the motherboard that would be great, because i have an atx x800 xt and just got it a while back and it was very expensive, but if i need to replace that i could just sell it on ebay. i posted some screen shots at the bottem (from cpuz) so you can see evry detail about my pc. thanks so much -Nick

A:Want to replace my motherboard, processor, and ram need help.

you have another post stating that you want to get another socket-754 processor for you existing motherboard.

now this post states that you want to get a new mobo too?

honestly I would not suggest getting another processor for a socket-754 system because it will still be bottlenecked by the slower hypertransport bus and single channel ram.

if you still want to use your AGP card and still have the ability to uprade to PCI-E in the future, consider this mobo I used it myself until a month ago and it worked great. and it has gotten very good reviews. it also lets you upgrade to AM2 when it eventually is worth it to do so (i.e. K8L)

Hi, Today i replaced my motherboard of my hp g62 A18-ed. it's my second mb I installed. First one didn'tpower on at all. This motherboard will power on. Wifi led will blink. Fan spins for 5 sec, then stops and after10-15 sec it wil spin again. Screen stays black. Seller guaranteed that this mb is 100% ok and tested before. Tried this MB in a other G62 case, still same problem. Tested with minimum hardware. Only ram, display andpower switch. Seller advised me to use single-sided ram. I think this is not the problem. The ram I use worked on previous MB. Tried other CPU allready. Anybody a solution? Regards, Roy.

A:Think I've damaged motherboard - how to replace?

You'll have to get the exact same motherboard, which means going back to Dell or buying one on eBay. Putting non-Dell boards into a Dell can be tricky and you are not allowed to use the Dell Windows XP license with anything except the mainboard that comes or is an approved replacement for the system.

But have you tried to clear the CMOS? There should be either a button, switch, or jumper to do this. Check the Dell site. And make sure the IDE just isn't disabled in the BIOS or set to None as that can happen.

You can also add a PCI IDE controller card to replace the IDE on the mainboard.

Hello guys, I assembled my desktop three years back with I5 650 processor - Socket LGA1156 | 4 GB DDR3 RAM | Intel DH55TC Motherboard. Recently I started having issues with my motherboard and system does not start. When i gave it for service, I was told that I need to change the motherboard which would cost around 8-10K. I was also suggested that Motherboard plus Fourth Gen Intel processor costs around 15K and its better to get a new one as the I5 650 is relatively old which might stop working soon.

Appreciate any suggestion.

Thanks in advance.

I have an Optiplex GX280 Minitower. The motherboard seems to ailing, I suspect as the result of running the BIOS update. Has anyone replaced the Dell board with an ATX board? I realize this is not a drop in but there seems to be plenty of room. Boards are available at around the same price as a refurbished Dell board and don't have the limitations of the Dell board. O/S is not an issue. After the change the only remaining original components would be the case, front I/O assembly and possibly the heatsink. A:Y470 - Any chance to replace motherboard by myself...

If you are comfortable working inside your laptop then there really isn't any reason not to replace the motherboard.  Just take your time and keep track of all the little screws and where they go.  Personally, I use a muffin tin to keep all the various screws separate.  I mark each bin on the tin with a brief description of where the screws go, example: back cover, keyboard, palm rest, etc.  Also take care when unplugging the various cables.  Some of the connectors on the ribbon cables have different types of release latches. Some slide in while others may flip up.   Your videos will be of assistance with those.
I sure you have it already, but if not here is a link to your model's Hardware Maintenance Manual.  The manual not only offers dis-assembly instructions, but has additional tips and pre-cautions to follow.'s%20guides%20and%20manuals/Y470Y570/Lenovo%2...

I bought a motherboard for C55B (price was good, good), motherboards C50B found were too expensive. I installed it without problem. This card has no outlet to the fan (I saw it when I bought). This is the first time I see it. I started to test this C55B running but the fan does not start because not connected.
Two questions:
1-Have you seen already motherboards without taking fan on laptops? If so, which then connects to the fan?
2-I took the decision C50B (what I had expected when I bought) and I welded in the space provided on the C55B. I started. Everything is good but the fan does not turn on (the fan is good and my welds too). Opinions?

video card is possible but more is not feasible, however checks your video card it is not welded, if welded is not possible to change the video card and if not welded still have more of a problem, you should check your motherboard supports other type of plate to be installed and also if the driver will be compatible with your motherboard. Already the motherboard if the same model that its possible ée yes replace the motherboard to get a good upgrade, Best Buy and even better that is more viable. I have helped (Used Translator)

A:Should/can I replace motherboard/memory/CPU Presario 2511EA

Motherboard replacements that fit that case are also slow. You are limited by the maximum of 1 GB of pc2700 memory in two 512 MB modules... and it is the memory that makes the biggest difference... Not the CPU speed.
You cannot find a motherboard that will be faster and still fit all the ports and plugs on the case... There are some mighty decent laptops that will be much faster and run at least 2 GB of memory that would be a better choice... Dell, some Acer, Lenovo, Asus... as well as newer Compaqs or HP's.
Prices will be low for the rest of the summer after high school and college graduations are over... and some sellers will give you a significant discount to reduce inventory. The prices will go back up, but with new models that are faster and run 4 GB of memory or more.
Treat yourself to a Windows 7 machine with the potential to run 4 or 8 G B of memory... a quality build will last you anlother seven years.

Hello,        Just wondering if it's possible to replace the motherboard of my laptop with a higher one? Or just the video card with a GTX and not a GT. Thanks in advance. Acer Aspire V15 Nitro (VN7-571G-73ZJ) Intel Core i7-5500UNvidia GeForce GT 940M8GB DDR3L

A:Replace/Upgrade motherboard and video card?

video card is possible but more is not feasible, however checks your video card it is not welded, if welded is not possible to change the video card and if not welded still have more of a problem, you should check your motherboard supports other type of plate to be installed and also if the driver will be compatible with your motherboard. Already the motherboard if the same model that its possible ée yes replace the motherboard to get a good upgrade, Best Buy and even better that is more viable. I have helped (Used Translator)

My Laptop is out of warranty and does not power on. No response to any attempt to start it.
I approached Dell Technical Support which guided me to go to local technician. He could not repair the laptop.
Then I went to Authorized Dell Service Centre in Gurgaon, India. There after initial diagnostics I was informed that the PPID tag on the motherboard was missing and so they can not replace the motherboard. I approached them again and verified with the Technical support yet no help.
The only solution offered was to sell the laptop when a simple replacement can easily solve the issuee. All this is being prevented by a small piece of PPID tag gone missing!

What if I replace the motherboard with the exact same model BUT change processors? Will I have any issues?
Was in the process of updating the bios. Not sure what I did wrong but it's dead. Have to send it back to super micro. I ordered an identical motherboard. But was updating the bios so I could switch from a quad core westmere chip to a hex.
Everything I have read states the OS is married to the motherboard (Win7 64 OEM). So if I get away with no issues from the motherboard swap, will the processor swap give me issues.
My system is a dual boot ubuntu 64/Win7 setup. I don't want to reinstall if I can help it. Advice would be appreciated.

(thanks admins for correcting this. Didn't mean to hijack that other thread)

A:Replace motherboard with exact same model BUT change processor?

you should not have any problems with Win7 even if its an OEM version. MS can reset if you have to call don't worry, just call them and explain what happened they are not going to crawl through the phone line and tear your head off or anything.

Looks like I'm gonna need to replace the mobo and I need some guidance on how to remove the liquid-cooling apparatus. The heatsink has some copper tubing that carries the coolant to and from the "radiator" which is located in the higher compartment. There must be a trick to it. I have searched but cannot seem to find a manual.

Can anyone here help me with this?

AND/OR inside the case the the jack is soldered directly to the motherboard. Is also possible that
1) It's already cracked
2) If not yet, it's gonna crack

So look to see what connection looks like between power jack and motherboard, If you feel u wanna/can re-solder yourself or the typically price to redo the whole power thing seems to run $125 parts/labor/warranty if you take it somewhere. So how much is it all worth to you?

For some reason W7 has decided to change 'Copy and Replace' with 'Move and Replace' when picking a file up with the left mouse and dragging it to another folder where an old version of the file exists.

My Excel SS is in two places: My desktop and USB which I use for backup. I would simply open the folder on the USB pick up the file on the desktop with the left mouse and drag it to the USB folder. Then I would get the message 'Copy and Replace'.. But not anymore it's become 'Move and Replace'.

I know I can 'Copy and Replace' by holding down the Ctrl key but I dont want to.

It looks like there should be a simple answer

Can anyone help? I swear I didnt change anything.

Hi (a post after a long time)
I've a F90M motherboard (with intel 915G chipset - i gues chipset doesn't have to do anything with front panel connections, but ... ). It came out of Acer 3700GX PC (i think its a bit old ).
Ok, now i'm trying to put it in a standard larger ATX casing. I've fitted it in and everything works fine except the front panel connections. I cannot identify the front panel connections and could only manage to identify the power switch pins on the motherboard.

I've searched over internet and couldn't find a manual of the motherboard (found manual for the PC on but it doesn't tell how to connect front panel)

so can you guys please suggest me the connections for front panel LEDs, Audio and USB.

and i really believe that you TSG guys are up to it

I could use some creative customer service here. My M3800 shipped with the known power-on motherboard defect. It was replaced at no charge, which was very nice. However, the replacement (2nd motherboard!) is now having the same intermittent dead / no power problem.
To get the computer running, I have to remove the case (12 screws) and un-plug the internal battery to 're-set' the electrical fault. After I put it back together, the computer starts normally. This is not very convenient, especially when meeting with new clients.
The problem is that I am being told I am outside the 3-month repair warranty. I think this stinks! It's a known issue and I would like someone at Dell to step up make my expensive computer work normally all of he time.
Yes, I have run every diagnostic known to man and the internet.

what's the main driver i need to install after installing win7 for the motherboard? just wondering if i'm missing something and need to install something else for the 'main features'? or are there main features found in the BIOS before win7 boots up? how does win7 recognise the board btw? does the board have drivers built in already? how can winxp recognise mboards that have been made very recently?

A:Gigabyte motherboard: P55M-UD4 some questions on motherboard software

Those are all the drivers you need, and really all any motherboard needs to work. You also have some Utilities under the drop down menu of "Download Type" but these are optional tweaking and similar utilities not required for proper operation of the system. Any version of Windows will have limited driver support, enough to install and run until the correct drivers are installed, or for a SATA or RAID controller under Windows XP drivers are loaded via the F6 prompt during the initial stages of the XP install to allow it to detect the hard drive. There are no drivers built into the hardware itself.

Related question, MBM list of supported models does not list mine (Dell Inspiron 6000), however, last MBM update was late 2004, (before i6000) and i 5100 is on the list, so I am assuming i6000 is supported. Where do I find motherboard ID? Thanks for prompt response --> wizard is waiting.

A:Need Motherboard Id To Install Motherboard Monitor

In the BIOS.

Periodically I'll get a "C++ runtime error" message and an App will have to close. The it drops to the desktop. Under administrative tools > Event viewer the message seems to point to ntdll.dll version 5.1.2600.2180 . That file seems to be a protected file. Does anyone know the procedure to repair or replace this file?

A:Replace Dll?

Friends computer Windows XP Home She s been having trouble with it restarting on her a bunch lately but she was always able to at least get to the Desktop before it rebooted without any error message or countdown like the blaster countdown When I was finally able to take a look at the computer it won t even get to the windows loading screen I m thinking the HDD is dead or not able to boot from some reason The drive will not boot Gives a blue error message after the bios POST Bios can check the drive and it fails I tried putting a disc in which I thought was a bootable PartitionMagic disc but it s not booting to it So I ll try using a bootable copy of Partition Magic and see what HDD? I just this replace Should it is before we buy a new drive Any ideas If the drive is not bootable now is it worth trying the PartitionMagic disc I m sure the disc I put in before was just a backupdisc that wasn t bootable and had the program s setupfiles on it Thanks in advance nbsp

Hi, I have a question with E-mail.
I was wondering if after the 2 years I've had this computer if I should change from my Yahoo! & Gmail accounts to Windows Mail, if that's possible.
What are the pro's and con's of switching to Windows Mail?

A:Should I Replace...

Hi Rance, I am unsure about Yahoo but you can access Gmail via Windows Mail. To use Windows mail you still need a provider whether it be your internet provider or the likes of Gmail so i dont see any reason to change anything except enabling your provider from within Windows mail. Here is a tutorial on enabling pop gmail within windows mail

Lately, I have been getting computer crashes where my monitor loses a signal from the computer, the gpu fan goes to 100%, and my computer becomes unresponsive (shutdown keyboard command doesn't work). This happens more and more often, to the point where it crashes before the computer can even post. However, when I open up the computer and jiggle around the connections, sometimes pulling out cords and re-plugging them in, this seems to completely fix the problem, until a couple days pass and the process repeats. I am certain I have a loose connection somewhere, but I'm not sure where. Should I replace the power supply or the motherboard? Or could something else be causing the issue? Thank you for any help!

A:What to replace?

I would start with swapping in a known good pw supply. While the case is open, get a bright light and give the mb a VERY close inspection. Look for any capacitors that look like the pics below.

So my GPU has been buzzing a lot lately My graphics card is a MSI Radeon series The cause is the fan and I know because it s happened to me before with an GPU my Help me fan replace older card I need to replace this fan but I don t know what to purchase what would be compatible and what would fit The original fan is the same model as this one I found on ebay except mine doesn t have the yellow cable Mine has the same model number Help me replace my GPU fan and the sticker was exactly identical to that one the only difference being Help me replace my GPU fan it has one red and one black cable minus the yellow one So what size of fan do I need and how can I make sure the holes for the screws are going to be the right distance apart What kind of fan will not begin buzzing after long term use This one says it s a quot sleeve bearing quot and I d like to try and stay away from that if I can Thank you Also I could not for the life of me remove the fan s power cable from the card When the time comes any tips for that nbsp

A:Help me replace my GPU fan

I would remove the fan then see if you can match the size with this or similar from Ebay :-

You will have to match the electrical connector as well so check how many pins are in the board socket.
You may have to use some force to disconnect the present fan's power cable from the GPU board.
It is a plug/socket connection isn't it ?

HI iv noticed recently my psu fan does'nt spin on start up, despite the pc starting up normally and working fine.

Sometime i turn off and on then the fan will work also.

Do you think i need to replace my PSU or could it be something else?

A:Should I replace my PSU?

What is the make and model? This is not sounding good what you describe. A good working PSU is the backbone of any system.

Give us the rest of your system hardware including make and model of your motherboard, amount of RAM installed, harddrive and video card. This will help us help you if you feel you need it.

Have a friend with a 9-month-old Dell Inspiron laptop who's had nothing but problems with Win XP. We've deleted the main partition and reinstalled XP, but problem (inability to maintain a modem connection) persists. It may be just a bad modem, and Dell is sending a new one, but he just doesn't like XP, and asked if it's possible to put Win 98 on the computer. I use Win 98, so am not familiar with XP, but know that XP uses NTFS instead of a FAT, and can't find anything that says whether or not it's possible to reformat the drive for a FAT-based Win 98 system. Is it, and if so, how (i.e., can I just boot to the command prompt, type "format c:", and hit enter)?

A:What should I replace?

For what it will cost you to upgrade it to play games, I would just suggest saving for a new computer.

First, you'll need to install a video card. If the model you have is in a micro-tower, it's not likely you'll be able to find a video card to fit.

Second, you would want to upgrade the processor. Even though it's apparently dual-core, it's still extremely slow.

Third, you would want to upgrade to 4GB of RAM.

And then to support it all, you'd likely need a new power supply.

So like I said...your best option would be to clean that up, sell it, and buy a new computer when you get the money.

At random, XP will restart on its own. The computer was built less than 2 years ago and I'm not quite sure if it's a software or hardware issue. AMD 2600+, 1.9 ghz, 512mb RAM, windows XP, radeon 9600 graphics card.

I find the computer crashes when it's put under a heavy workload. For instance, I opened Spy Bot S&D to rule out any infections and within 30 seconds of running the application the computer restarted. This occured back to back just moments ago. Other times I am using WORD or browsing. This has been occuring for more than 4 months now.

I've ran a CPU application to max it out and again the computer restarts. It occurs everytime I run the program.

I also monitored my RAM while it performed and only 50% was being utilized.

How do I know it's the CPU and not the Motherboard or HD?

A:Do I need to replace my CPU?

Spobot Killed the Computer in the Den with the Fireplace Poker

This isn't "Clue" we're paying, you say?

Spybot uses 100% of the CPU. Your box could be entering thermal cutoff.
Use canned air to clean out the CPU/ heatsink, and just for good measure the rest of the insides as well.
Find out if your board has hardware monitoring and find what the critical zone temperatures are. You may have to install either the board manufacturers monitoring software or a utility like "Speedfan', available here at Techspot.

A:Replace hdd with SDD

See the following video list for removal and replacement of the hard disk. ( hard drive assembly) What you will need is a SATA mobile 2.5" SSD to replace the legacy spinner hard wisk with. I highly recommend that you replace it by cloning the current disk to the new one.  That is the simplest method. See the sticky I created  in this section  of the forum for details on how that is done. An SSD of 256 GB or higher capacity is recommended as a replacement for the legacy hard disk currently installed. An SSD of 256 GB or higher capacity will allow for use of the Recovery media that you created with the HP Recovery Media Creator utility. See the following links at to see what will work. You can only use SATA, SATAII and SATAIII interface SSD disks. None of the other interface types are compatible with your notebook's systemboard and BIOS !!!

Replace faulty HDD with a new 1TB replacement (same size - same brand).  Always get "Reboot and Select proper boot device or Insert Boot media..." all to no avail.  Doesn't matter if CD/DVD, external or HDD selected, same message.

Hi......simple question i have a hp pav 8984 with a cd burner......sometimes when i use the burner the computer turns of for no apparent reason..the i have to wait a few hours before i can switch it back on.....but i've been thinking i dont hear the fan anymore and at the back it gets a bit hot....should i replace the fan???? probably a stupid question....but could be something totally different...

A:Do i need to replace the fan????

Which fan?

If its the power supply fan, its essential. If you cook the power supply, the HP only replacements are very expensive, and standard ones usually do not fit.
