Hard drive errors with failed UEFI test

Q: Hard drive errors with failed UEFI test

My notebook started having problems, showing the sad smiley face saying that the computer ran into a problem and needs to restart. The blue screen showed the following exception: UNEXPECTED STORE EXCEPTION The next boot fails with a "Boot Device not Found... Hard Disk (3F0)" black screen. Only after a hard reset the computer is able to boot into windows, only to have the same problem happen again every 15 minutes or so. I ran the UEFI Hard Disk check, which resulted in the following failure ID: 9K58QC-6NW89U-MFPX0K-60R403 Would appreciate your help

Preferred Solution: Hard drive errors with failed UEFI test

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Your hard drive has failed and needs to be replaced.  Once you replace the hard drive then you'll need to reinstall the operating system (OS) and software/drivers so that your system is operational.

Hi,            The failure ID refers to Hard disk drive failure. If the unit is under warranty, then you can call the HP Support to get the Hard disk drive replaced if not you have to get the Hard disk drive replaced yourself and then reinstall the operating system using recovery disk.

My computer was working fine, it turned off fine. Later when I turned it back on it wouldn't go past the black windows logo screen with the loading bar. Then every time I turned it on I got the improper shut down screen. None of the safe mode or configuration options would run. I tried all the boot options and none would work. Tried using start up disks and couldn't get repair or anything to work. Got a message that windows couldn't find mass storage device and HDD test had read failure. Everything pointed to a bad drive. For the heck of it I tried windows reinstall and it worked, even tho I lost my info. So I don't understand why a working drive would suddenly become inoperable when it's really not. What would do this? Don't want it to happen again

On some Toshiba's I've worked on, including my own Tecra, I press Escape and Function 1 to get a boot menu and with an XP CD in, there's a three second only window in which to "press any key" when the prompt appears. Are you seeing that prompt when you boot from CD? You might also benefit from formatting that hard disk in the other machine if you already started to install on it.

After using the system Recovery DVD error msg. response "hard disk not exist" what does that mean.

A:hard disk test failed

Please tell us a little more about your computer. It sounds like either the hard drive has failed, or the hard drive has come loose from the motherboard. It is also possible that it is a problem with the motherboard itself.I am assuming you are running the Hard Drive Test from BIOS. Have you tried placing the hard drive in a different SATA port on the motherboard? It could be that just the SATA it is currently connected to has failed. You could also place the hard drive in another computer and seeing if it gets recognized then, indicating it was a problem with the motherboard (in which case that computer is pretty much screwed. Contact your manufacturer to see if it's under warranty and if they'll replace it).If neither of these work then most likely the hard drive is shot. You'll pretty much have to either get the hard drive replaced by the manufacturer or buy a new one. One last thing, have you tried running system recovery off of the Vista Installation Discs?

A:hard disk ide dps test failed and not booting.

Hi dionrodrigues,
Is your PC new and have added any new components to it recently (RAM in particular)? The error code you are getting usually appears when there is new RAM installed. If you could upload the BSOD it would be helpful. Another thing to try would be reseating your RAM.
As for your hard drive, I would suggest connecting it with different cables and in a different port. Afterwards, you could consider running a brand specific diagnostic tool on the disk to check its health. There are third party software solutions to be found online, however the once from the manufacturer provide the most accurate results as they are developed for such drive and know the firmware best. You can upload a screenshot of the SMART status after running an extended test. It would be best if can test the drive on a different PC with different SATA cables.
If you manage to access the drive I strongly recommend doing a backup prior to any testing just to be on the safe side.
If the drive has bad sectors it is recommended to change it, or if you use it not to trust it with important information. Having regular backups is always a good idea
Keep me posted,

My 2 TB WD MyPassport Ultra has stopped working. In disk management, it shows unallocated and when i try to initialize it, it says an I/O error has occured. This hard disk was bought only 20 days ago from amazon.

I tried inserting it on different computers, through different cables etc.

I read a lot of threads on this forum on similar(same) problems. I performed WD Lifeguard test, and my hard disk failed both quick test and extended test. What should I do?

The suspected cause is that it was being used on a computer when the system showed blue screen of death. It has not been working since then.

A:Hard Disk not recognised; Unallocated; Lifeguard Test failed

If hope that you had a back up of your stuff or there was nothing important on that drive. You have to contact Amazon and get a replacement. The BSOD did not cause the problem, the problem caused the BSOD. There is a surprisingly large number of HDs that are corrupt when purchased. You should not have a problem trying to exchange it. I do wish you good luck and sorry about your situation.

We have a HP 110-194  desktop computer that we wish to remove the original hard drive (#1) from the case (using BIOS UEFI mode), install hard drive (#2) using BIOS Legacy mode.  When changing the BIOS hard drive mode to Legacy, will the hard drive be automatically detected as non-UEFI computers, and can component drivers be installed for devices? After changing the BIOS to Legacy mode to instal hard drive #2, can hard drive #2 be removed and the BIOS changed back to UEFI to install hard drive #1, keeping the original operating system anf files as they were before removing the drive? If hard drive #2 doesn't install correctly, we would like the option to go back to hard drive #1 without much effort.

So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching.  When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue.  When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed.  My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though.  So I ran a System Quick Test, everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine.  Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.

A:SATA disk failed and Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed

Hi there @nmulji,  Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check.  SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). A:UEFI boot from Hard Drive on HP8300

HiI am experiencing pretty much the same problem. disconnected internal hdd and connected new SSD with gpt formatted image on it, go into bios and it shows the hdd as a legacy boot device and not a uefi boot device.  obviously trying to boot the gpt drive in legacy mode fails, but how do i get the bios to see and use uefi to boot the drive? if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Scenario:

I have a laptop that i set up with an image that loads Win8X64 UEFI Secure. If this hard drive crashes at all, will i get a chance to hook it up to as an external hard drive to another computer to pull off user files as back up?

I tried to do this scenario before i start deploying uefi secure images for my company but it wouldn't show data. I can see the drive however in devices but it won't give it a drive letter and i can't access it.

Is there a resolution to this problem that i can troubleshoot just in case i run into it in the future.

Thank you in advance.

ok so i can see the drive if its on a Legacy boot system.

But it wont show on a UEFI Boot system. whether its unsecure or secure, will not show up.

My HP Windows 8 laptop came in contact with an electromagnetic field. Unfortunately it wiped the hard drive completely and i could not recover any files or data from it. I am used to repairing computers but i am not familiar with the new UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) and i am now having problems installing windows 8 again. Like a dummy i forgot to create recovery disks and am now sitting with a very expensive paperweight with a blank hard drive and no money to afford hp recovery tools. I have a windows 8 installation disk and a product key that i bought when i got the computer. How do i install windows 8 without being able to access the UEFI configuration menu accessible through the Operating System? Please help!!

Hi,

I recently ran a scheduled diagnostic test of my PC with the manufacturer's diagnostic software. I received two error messages and the advice to promptly replace my hard drive. The first message was Failed (Error code: WHD20-1VR) and the second was Failed (Error code: WHD16-T57). The apply to Targeted Read test and Smart Short Self Test respectively.

So I ran Chkdsk for the C: drive and received no error messages.

Which is correct and what should I do about it? The error message won't go away on the software.

Thanks for helping.

A:Question: Failed Targeted Read Test and SMART Short Self Test

CHKDSK is a very basic check that mostly checks file system and can be set to scan for bad sectors. The manufacturer's diagnostics actually check the physical drive to make sure its operating within the designed parameters and is more thorough.

You should replace the drive.

I was running Win XP which finally failed and I was able to enter in safe mode (only, no networking) and ran all the tests I could think of. Hard drive is ok and so I attempted to repair WinXP from the installation CD. However, the PC failed to shut down and restart so I eventually force closed it. Now it won't even load past the initial black windows screen, don't even get the option of going into safe mode.

Is there any way I (or someone) could access the hard drive to retrieve the data? I guess I could reinstall the OS but don't want to do that yet as I'll definitely lose the data.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

A:Win XP failed, repair failed -- can I access hard drive?

Sure, there are many ways. Depending on what you want in the end decides how to proceed.

If you have a lot of space free on the drive, you could boot off a linux dvd and create a new partition. You'd have to shrink the existing, then make a new one. Then you could just copy over the data from the old one to the new one. Then reinstall windows onto the old partition, and copy your stuff back (then delete the partition and expand the remaining to fill the rest of the space).

You can also just boot off a linux disk and copy it to a thumb drive or whatever.

Or you could remove the hard drive and place it in another computer.

Also, I'm not convinced you lose the data if you install Windows again. I'm pretty sure you can install without formatting the drive. Your programs won't work, but it shouldn't overwrite any of your data. This is a non-ideal solution though.

A:Multiple hard drive boot errors, hard drive clicking, and freezing

Try installing another operating system onto the disk and seeing if that crashes as well. If it doesn't you probably have a bad Windows cd. I suggest trying Kubuntu, a version of Linux meant to look somewhat like Windows (You can click here to skip directly to the download page). Just remember to actually install the thing. Most Linux operating systems can be ran directly from the cd without any need to be installed onto a hard disk. There's usually a program on the desktop that will install the system for you. If it runs properly for a week or two, get a new Windows disk. If it crashes just as much as Windows did, get a new computer.

Also, how much RAM does your computer have? If it's very low (256-512 megs or less) it can sometimes cause these kinds of crashes too.

Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11-  window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?

A:Hard Drive failure (Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed)

DST:Fail means  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

I need to test a hard drive to see if I can use it in a laptop. The drive is not installed anywhere. What utility should I use and how should I connect it to another PC that is functioning so I can test it. The drive is a Hitachi drive.

A:Need to test Hard drive

If you don't have one already, get an external HDD dock with a connection appropriate for the PC you want to connect to (such as USB 3.0, USB 2.0, or eSATA), plug in the drive, then try to see it on the PC you are using. You may need to format it if it hasn't been already (you didn't state if the drive is new or used). Once you can see the drive, use a program like Speccy (the free version will work quite well) to check the drive condition.

This week I encountered the following strange problem for which I haven't found a final solution so far though I have found some bandaids But having a complete solution -or at least a reason why this problem occurs- would be great I have a working installation of Windows Professional x in UEFI mode The main disk SSD contains the following partitions using GPT ESP MSR system data An additional disk HD with a single data partition using MBR is also attached to the system With this setup everything works fine Now after adding another disk HD to the system -my old system disk bootable using MBR one active primary partition and an extend partition another Windows booting drive adding hard UEFI mode after in stops with three logical disks - Windows will no longer boots completely The boot process begins the Windows logo is shown Then a message is shown in text mode quot Windows is loading files quot with a loading bar After a while the boot process stops and I am dropped into the EFI shell After removing the offending HD Windows boots normally again I tried removing HD and only attaching Windows stops booting in UEFI mode after adding another hard drive HD together with SSD but this yielded the same problem Using SSD by itself works fine though Booting from a Linux live-cd works without problems All disks and partitions are found and can be mounted There I Windows stops booting in UEFI mode after adding another hard drive erased the disk signature from the offending HD and now Windows was able to boot and also found all disks and partitions correctly But after a reboot the same problem reappeared My current assumption is that after removing the disk signature Windows no longer regards HD during the boot process and only setups the disk after booting has finished But as soon Windows stops booting in UEFI mode after adding another hard drive as it has a disk signature again Windows includes HD in the boot process and probably the partition ordering gets mixed up compared to what Windows expects So my question is why does this boot problem occur and how can I fix it permanently and will it happen for any new disk I attach to my system

A:Windows stops booting in UEFI mode after adding another hard drive

Has HD#3 any active partitions?
What happens if you boot with HD#3 attached only?
How did you erase the disk signature? As far as I know you can only update it

Depends on the make/model of your drive. Western Digital has an excellent little utility to check THEIR drives. Do you know what kind of drive you have? You may need to open the computer and have a look on the drive. Then go to the drive's manufacture's web site and see if anything is offered.

Hello, use a working computer to download and create a rescue disk like Hiren's, Falcon, UBCD, and boot the computer with it, then from the many available tools you can do a hard disk and memory diagnostic

How to test a laptop hard drive

I am trying to upgrade my older laptop hard drive but my comp doesn't seem to recognize that it is there. Could this be because: 1) It is a bad drive 2) the ide connector is not compatible (shouldn't any ide connector work?) 3)the drive is not compatible with my laptop 4) some other reason.

The hard drive is a IBM Travelstar 4.78 G
The laptop is a Micron Trek Transport II

Is there a way to test the drive in the laptop? I'm guessing not if the laptop can't even detect it. Does that mean the comp isn't even reading it, or it could be bad? Ugh.

Hi there,
My sister just bought a new desktop. It was working fine and all. But this morning, she forced shut down a windows update. The next thing happen once it gets past through BIOS is
"Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"
So I told her to look at the BIOS setting and it only recognise the Optical Disc Drive of
"SATA SM: TSSTcorp CDDVD SH-2"
as shown in the picture below

Is there anything I can do? I tried opening the desktop case and see everything is loose, but everything was still in tact.
Any suggestion would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

A:Hard Disk Drive not found in ASUS UEFI BIOS Utility - EZ Mode

Try reinstalling the driver, changing cables. If it can't be recognized then boot the maker's diagnostics DOS CD scan to test it - Seatools if there isn't one - or Partition Wizard bootable CD surface scan. If these won't see it you can slave it to another PC to try Disk Check or see if it will see it. If not then I'd replace it.

Do a Clean Reinstall on the replacement drive from tutorial in my signature below if you want it perfect.

I have got an external segate hard drive that connected to my laptop through USB cable, I doubt that there is a problem, then I decided to test it by using : Segate seatool utility (windows version not dos version) that I have downloaded from segate site.

I can see the external hard drive :
http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/7627/segateutilitysd3.jpg

But the test option is unavailable!!!!

Is there any other utility that can test such a USB connected HD or any other barnd ?

I knew that we can connect faulty hard disk directly to the mother and then run the test from CD or floppy, but this is not feasible in my case

A:Segate External Hard Drive How to test it

I am pretty sure that Western Digital's Diagnosis program will be able to do it. If you get an errors, however, the drive is most likely bad. http://support.wdc.com/download/?cxml=n&pid=999&swid=3

I was given an old Toshiba Tecra S1 laptop this past August. It was a company laptop and so I didn't expect much but after cleaning up the system, adding RAM, etc., it has been running quite well.

Yesterday I ran a harddrive diagnostics by utilizing Seagate Tools for a routine maintenance session.

1. It passed both the S.M.A.R.T and the Short DST tests twice.

2. It failed the Long DST test twice.

* What does this mean for my harddrive?

If the diagnostic is correct, the drive is beginning to fail. It should be replaced. If you have any critical data on the drive back it up ASAP.

Hi Guys I recently installed Vista after having my machine running XP I have WD gb drives that I have both put into external enclosures both with gb partition each BOTH drives worked fine in XP I stress this Now here is the issue One of the drives works fine The other drive is showing up in Computer as quot Local Disk quot but does not recognise any partitions In hard disk managment it says that the disk is in raw format I took the drive into my friends computer who is running XP and the drive is still fine Every file there and completely writable I read an article the following quot The solution to this annoying problem I had it on one PC seems to be to locate and delete the file INFCACHE which may be corrupted and causing the problem To delete this file you will first have to modify its permissions so the users group can access it right-click on the file- gt Properties- gt Security INFCACHE file It s located at C Windows inf scroll down to the file Note to see INFCACHE you must set Windows Explorer to display hidden and system files quot So i tried that will Drive and (this Vista Hard External test you) and it did nothing I have installed all updates nothing To make matters worse I thought a reinstall of the generic driver would be External Hard Drive and Vista (this will test you) enough to kick start the new driver cache NOW when i plug the drive in i get quot Windows needs a driver to install this hardware quot FOR AN EXTERNAL HDD MAN WHATS WRONG Vista looks online for the driver but doesn t find anything I even tried to manuely locate the driver by selecting the default driver that windows was using for my External Hard Drive and Vista (this will test you) second external harddrive they are exactly the same device afterall Still nothing I know that once I can actualy install the driver I could just format the drive in vista but i m not going to do that It is completly full to do that I would need another drive to backup onto I thought I could try to do a partition recovery on the drive but again I really do NOT want to since there is still a good chance that this will loose my data So Thoughts I think this will test alot of us here Nath nbsp

A:External Hard Drive and Vista (this will test you)

Ok , i got the drive installed properly again. So I am back to where I started.

Here is a interesting update, I installed [email protected] Partition Recovery to take a look at the drive. The program doesn't find anything wrong with the drive. In fact, it shows that the drive does have the partition and that there is nothing wrong with it. So I can't even "restore" the partition because the recovery software doesn't see the drive the same way that Vista does (and the drive letters are the same, so active partition reports, "I:\ (Data Backup)" and Windows reports "I:\ Local Disk RAW Format".

Any thoughts from anybody this time....

HP diagnostics returned error code 9lhvwc-5rg85u-mfh15f-60t903 during a hard drive short self test this evening. Prior to the test, the disk drive was working very slowly, as if it had trouble reading data. I am able to log in with windows in it's normal mode, but the drive performs poorly. Safe mode is better. I own an HP dv7-6175us with serial number 5ch134ijx7.

A:Hard Drive failure during short test

I suspect it's an issue with the header, because the disk drive was also clicking, and it was the click you hear when the accelerometer halts the hard drive. I suspect it's impact/shock damage. It was repeatedly clicking for about 5 time before I shut it down manually.

Hello, could you please tell me how to know for sure whether a hard drive is on its last legs?

How do you differentiate between a 'normal' seek noise and a bad one? How do you diagnose a terminal failure before it occurs?

I've tried the utilities from the hard drive manufacturers and third party software to check if there are any problems but nothing has come up.

The issue described in this post does not affect the operating system, but more to do with a software issue. Therefore, I apologise if this thread would have been better placed in another section of the forum.

A friend informed me that he ran 'Barts Stuff Test 5' to check is his hard drive for errors, after noticing an error message upon startup stating an a hard drive failure is imminent and now has a virtually full hard drive.

To the best of my knowledge this is caused by the manual allocation of the stress test being set at 3% (those who are familar with this program will understand what I mean by this). However, he did not create an restore points and now wishes to undo this.

Are you aware of any way to do so? - In order to clear space on the hard drive?

Many thanks,

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.  Yes, the files can most likely still be retrieved.  To do this, you would need to take the hard drive out of the notebook and connect it directly to a desktop computer or insert it into an external hard drive dock/cradle and browse to the files you need.  If you feel this is too difficult then you could take it to a local computer repair store and they'll be able to do this for you (for their fee). Once you've got the old drive out, you can have another put in and recover the operating system using the HP Recovery Media and it'll put the notebook back into the same condition as it came out of the box.

Xp would not start because my hard drive went south. At least that's what Dell says. They got into my system to take a look see, and the conversation lasted all but a few minutes. Apparently that was the problem the whole time and i didn't know it. I have a refurbished one on order and hopefully it will be here soon. Gonna do the surgery myself. It looks pretty easy. I think installing the new burner was a little more diffucult. I didn't want to spend a whole lot because i'm gonna get a new computer in February. Any advise would be appreciated.

Remember when installing the drive to unplug the computer and take out the battery if it is a laptop. Also avoid carpet or any static.

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Media to install Windows/drivers/software on the new hdd. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Battery calibration:http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Pavilion-dv6-3200-Entertainment-Notebook-PC-series/4308480/model/5051632/document/c00821536#AbT3

I am attempting to troubleshoot a laptop for my nephew it is an Sony the hard post Will to drive a test cause fail? occasionally failing Vaio PCG- P L identified as PCG-K UG in the bio amp s With Windows XP home A Gig Hitachi HD MB of memory No surviving optical drive No Bio s USB boot support No floppy and a bad hard drive While I amp m fairly knowledgeable about PC amp s in general I have never had a laptop and so am unsure of my conclusions The difficulty amp s are that the hard Will a failing hard drive cause the post test to occasionally fail? drive has gone bad and the optical drive was broken months ago I have viewed both the optical and HD replacement Knowledge Articles on the Sony site and am confident that I can replace both but should I bother Here is where I need some information The drive will usually post and after choosing a menu option freeze and or reboot during the OS load Simple and dandy replace the hard drive but this is my issue Occasionally the laptop will hang at the post I took this to mean that I had a motherboard video or memory error but no beep amp s and that the first two would not be economical fix However when I removed the HD and attached it to my desktop PC through a USB adapter in an attempt to recover the drive data it locked up the post process during the memory check This only happened once but implies that I have misunderstood the post test process and that a hard drive failure may in fact occasionally cause the post to hang So the question is this Can a failing hard drive cause the post test to fail Or do I have at least problem amp s if you count the lack of an optical drive and one isn amp t worth fixing What I have seems to be just a hard drive failure but I don amp t want to buy a new hard drive if the post test failure means that I have issues with the motherboard Thank you GJWK P S I think that both the HD and Optical drives are industry standard but if they re proprietary could someone warn me nbsp

This problem started with a bad driver file from my printer. I was able to get my desktop to work, but it has crashed my laptop.

I have been trying to reinstall operating system (XP) on my Compaq Presario V2000. I deleted the partition and did the slower version of the formatting the partition. It game back with an error message that there was a partmgr.sys driver error. It suggested to disable the BIOS memory options by starting up in safe mode. I had no idea how to do that, but when I was there ran the hard drive self test and came up with test error #1 - 07 fail. I also reloaded the setup defaults for the PhoenixBIOS.

How do I fix this problem (the self-test and ultimately getting my computer to accept the reinstall)?

Thanks!

A:Hard Drive Self Test Error #1 - 07 Fail & Reinstalling Windows XP

To fix the self test you need to replace the hard drive. That's the whole point of a self test, if it fails it means your drive is bad.

I did a diagnostic tool to see what is wrong with my computer. It was hard drive/motherboard with error code
BIOHD-8, and then i did a hard drive scan. Does it show the results? And i have to try to fix the files and it is stuck verifying file data at 11% stage 4 of 5. Does it take a long time for that part?

My hard drive failed last Saturday reading quot operating system not found readable) hard drive? recovery an old (failed vista using of new a partition still Installing the drive on but quot BIOS testing resulted in error Installing vista on a new hard drive using the recovery partition of an old (failed but still readable) drive? replace hard drive At this point the drive won t boot but data can still be read I have a new hard drive The backup disk I made for Vista isn t working I thought of borrowing one from a friend but my OEM key on the bottom has completely worn off Installing vista on a new hard drive using the recovery partition of an old (failed but still readable) drive? HP says they cannot help and Microsoft wants me to pay for a replacement key I d like to avoid that if possible Is there any way to use the recovery partition on the old drive to install Vista on the new drive My laptop has two hard drive bays but I only have one caddy so ideally I d like to connect it using an enclosure Also I do have access to another computer that I could use as a quot go-between quot if needed For example if it s possible to simply copy and paste the recovery partition files I could use the enclosure to copy them from the old drive to the working computer then put the new drive in the enclosure and copy the files onto that Any advice appreciated Thanks

Windows Recovery CD doesn t see hard drive nor does the Bios but HD passes self test I so hope to get some help through this does but nor HD see test drive hard Bios doesn't Recovery self Windows passes CD the forum I noticed that often your advice is very detailed and specific which I hope will be the case with my problem This computer is a Compaq Presario V notebook and was loaded with viruses for which we could find no removal software that would remove this virus sorry didn t write down the virus name but at the point it doesn t matter We tried AVG which detected the virus but had no suggestion for removal MalWare Bytes did not Windows Recovery CD doesn't see hard drive nor does the Bios but HD passes self test solve the problem even in safe mode Since the owner of the computer did not create recovery discs when the notebook was new nor did they know where to find the CD that came with the computer so far I suggested saving their photos to some flash drives which we did and using the system recovery feature to completely restore the computer to factory condition I started the process and everything went great until the very final button which said quot Finish quot It would go no further from that point I purchased software from Spotmau BootSuite and hoped that would help but it seemed to further complicate the problem or perhaps the way I used it did At this point when Windows starts to load it appears about to load completely past the windows icon screen and showing the default desktop background when the error message comes up in a little box saying quot System is not fully installed please run setup again quot I go into the bios and set it to load setup in default settings and it doesn t change anything I ordered replacement recovery discs for this model computer and was excited to use it and get everything back to factory condition no such luck I had already run a Primary hard disk self check quick and comprehensive and it passed also memory check passed BUT when I ran the recovery disc it did not recognize my Hard drive The Hard drive is also not in the list in Bios I reseated the Hard drive and it made no difference I also tried the R for repair in recovery console on the Recovery CD and it didn t work The hard drive is not making any funny noises and it checked out in the self test It is just not being found I read on another help site that the problem may be in the Hard drive being a SATA hard drive and I am not sure I understand but it mentioned changing the IDE to SATA instead of RAID SATA saying that sometimes this is a problem with Windows XP I can t do that because there is no option to do that from the Bios I saw that I could create a floppy disc from the manufacture that might help with that Do you know what that is and do you believe that might help I don t think there is a slot for a floppy disc as it is not listed in product features on http h www hp com wwpc ca e - - - html dnr Will have to find out for sure from hp tomorrow I would love to just wipe it all out and start from scratch but don t know if I can do that I have the recovery CD but don t know how to start clean because the Windows XP that is partly installed is still trying to load but it can t get past a certain point Oh yes I tried starting it in safemode Also in safemode with command prompt and in every other advanced mode There was also another error message that came up in one of the tries that said There is a corrupt or missing file WINDOWS system config SYSTEM I found a site that had step by step instructions on how to get that file back in the proper place but I couldn t find the function to allow me to do that manually Any help you might offer would be MUCH appreciated I have already spent nearly on spotmau software and replacement recovery discs for this model Would love to be able to avoid additional expense as I believe there is nothing wrong with the hard drive Just something in the registry and setup that needs to be fixed The own... My laptop will not boot, the screen comes on and the dell logo is there and the lights flash around the like it's trying to boot and then it goes dark and that's it.  When I check the setup it can find the hard drive, it lists it by the HDD.  When I run diagnostics it fails with short test unsuccessful.  I have reseated the hard drive and tried to reboot,  but it is not working.  I'd like to run chkdsk /r from the command console like I saw in one of the possible solutions, but I don't know how to get to the command console.  I'm thinking I need a new hard drive but I would like to try everything to save this one first.

A couple days ago, I noticed that my laptop was not yet rated with the windows experience index, so I plugged the laptop in to ac power, set the power plan to High Performance, and ran the rating. However, it failed at 99% complete with a weird hard drive read error. I've attached a couple of pictures of me re-running the test again, with the same result:

During test:

Error message:

A:Windows Experience Index Rating fails on 99% during Hard drive test

Is it connected to the internet?

WEI needs to be online in order to do the rating.

You can also try to clear all scores and rerate the system under advanced tools under performance information and tools.

EDIT:

Looking closer at the screenshot, you might want to run a Disk Check

I have hard slowly, to III runs drive USB how speed? test SATA External a couple of different SATA III hard drives inch form factor i have them in an Icy Box USB case i believe they run very slowly far slower than if connected to the normal SATA cables to the MB I don't know if I am expecting too much are there any External SATA III USB hard drive runs slowly, how to test speed? tests I can do to see if there is External SATA III USB hard drive runs slowly, how to test speed? a real issue please OS is Win bit pro and the USB drivers are up to date caveat I damaged a USB header for the front USB ports lead on the MB and snapped a pin So rather than buy a new MB I added a USB PCIe card and ran the front two ports to the card I would MUCH rather use the front ports and I have to admit I have not tried the Icy Box hard drive on a rear USB port yet But I would like to determine if I have been a tight wad and should have just replaced the MB Thanks for reading and for any replies Further my MB does not have an eSATA port would adding a card supporting eSATA give a speed benefit above a correctly functioning USB port

A:External SATA III USB hard drive runs slowly, how to test speed?

Data transfers to USB drives do seem to be slower than transfers to internal drives and I also have slowness with the front USB 2.0 ports. I use this product in my computer:
4-port USB 2.0 High Speed Front-Bay Hub - Black | C2G
Power comes from the PC's power supply and the data cable plugs into a port on the rear.
Haven't gotten a similar product for USB 3.0 ports yet but this page shows several:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=usb+3.0+in...ub&ia=products
With Notebooks now including eSATA ports on some models I'm starting to think about that for my one Desktop that could use such a drive.

Failure Id GU3T7K-6P684M-MFGJXG-60TX03Product ID E0K95UA#ABA touchscreen envy had been taking a long time to get to log in screen.  Turned it off and ignored it for a couple of weeks and went to turn on today and would not proceed past hp logo screen to log in.  Ran system quick check and got error code above.   I'm tossing this and not replacing it as it went dead much too quickly and I'm completely disappointed in this ho product.  But can someone tell me if I'll be able to recover data from this laptop or not? I'm afraid not and I've lost lots of pictures and documents.  But if so, what  steps would I need to tackle next to recover data?  Thank you.
