I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
[/B]I have had the notebook for five years; yesterday the following message:
NTLDR is missing
Press ctrl + alt + del to restart
When the user does the instruction, the boot starts and the message repeats.
I really do not want to do a reinstall of the operating system; if someone has away to reinstall just the boot tracks.
 Is this a virues?
Is this the work of a hacker?
Has there been an MS-XP failure?

Check this site out. How to fix: NTLDR is missing, press any key to restart Its long but should fix your problem.

My son decided he would go into HKEY and delete pretty much everything that you can in their. Then he proceeded to restart and go into bios and change all the setting around. The computer is a systemax with a nvida graphics card 1gig ram dvdrom. I'm not very tech savvy. So if sombody can tell me in "english" how to restore/reformat it that would be awsome. It had windows XP on it. I'm not sure where my windows xp boot disc is either .

Hi I want to instal one SSD disk on my computer. Do anyone now if it is Sata 3 port on this computer ? If it isn`t can I install Sata 3 port or do I have to chang motheboard ! Regards KOB32
Hi: Run this free hardware analyzer that I have zipped up and attached below. Run the file, close the summary window and on the left side of the window, click to expand the Drives section. Then click to expand the sata/atapi drives section. Click on your hard drive name listed there. The first line will be the Drive Controller spec. It will report the hard drive type running at a certain speed. For example Serial ATA 6 Gb/s @ 6 Gb/s. If your notebook only has a SATA II port, it might report Serial ATA 6 Gb/s @ 3 Gb/s, or Serial ATA 3 Gb/s @ 3 Gb/s.

I have tried twice to upgrade my HP Pavillion DV4 notebook to a Samsung 840 Solid State Drive and the two times it only shows a "J" while trying to boot. This is a first...
A friend was visiting for three days and a few things seemed to change. He shut off my monitor when not using the PC. It didn't come back on when I hit the power, so I hit the menu button and tried to get the thing up & running. I didn't get into the monitor's menu.
That's the only thing that was done differently. Now XP asks for the CMOS setting every time I boot up. It asks for standard (F1) or advanced (F2). When I do the standard setting, my computer starts back to the year 2002 at 12pm.
How can I get things back to normal, when I turn the PC on and it boots up in XP like always?
If the date changes, chances are that the CMOS battery needs to be replaced. Just a co-incidence on timing and your friend, I'd say.
I have a compaq Presario laptop, It was working good & suddenly it started showing error
PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting PXE ROM.
This keep going on in a loop
When i try to boot from XP professional CD & go to the repair Option to do "bootcfg /rebuild" as suggested in one of the posts on this forum, it says 'operation cannot be completed as drive not found'.
Then we get error msg for 'ntoskrnl.exe' missing or currupt. I tried using the copy cammand but somehow the system shuts down automatically on the repair console before i can type the entire command and execute it.
Whatever help to resolve this issue is highly appreciated.
A friend recently gave me an older dell lattitude c610. She said she couldn't get it to work anymore and didn't need it. I found that the year, mo. & date & time keep having to be set each time I try to get on. I went to the dell website but couldn't find the CMOS battery location on the schematic it showed. Does anyone know where it is and how to get to it to change it. That would be most helpful. Thanks in advance.

Hello,I was recently given a pavillion dv9821ea laptop which was in bad shape after being infected with a virus. I eventually had to replace the hard drive and at the same time I upgraded the operating system to windows 7 PRO 64bit. I was unable to save nothing from the origonal hard drive, no drivers, HP software etc and since I installed Windows 7, the laptop seems to have several problems including not downloading Windows updates. I connect it to the HP assistant, but this recognises the laptop and only gives me the choice of Windows Vista as the operating system for which to support drivers etc. I wonder if you could help me by letting me know if there is anywhere I can download Windows 7 pro 64bit drivers for this laptop? my wife and I are both disabled and it would make a great difference to me if I could have full use of this laptop. Regards. Gerald
Hi, Gerald: HP did not support that model for W7, and you should be able to use the Vista drivers from the dv9821ea support page except the BIOS and firmware files. Additionally, you can read this helpful dv9000 W7 upgrade guide for some tips on getting W7 to work just fine on that model. http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/Windows-7-Upgrade-Guide-for-dv60...http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Drivers-for-Pavillion-dv9821ea-entertainment-notebook/td-p/5594190

HP Support Assistant reports that there is a software update available to download. Click yellow triangle, get to products, shows a software download available, but does not specify what the download is.
Click on Message / update. Four segment square icon starts rotating through the segments. Runs and runs and runs, now more than 2 hours. Nothing downloads.
This is the third time today I've tried to download the supposed software update. Same result each time. Nothing downloads.
Same result each time.

Hello katrapezo. I understand you're having some trouble recording audio. Have you tried recording in another application such as Sound Recorder? I'd also like you to remove your audio drivers and allow Windows to reinstall them. Here are the steps.Click Start, type "Device Manager," and press Enter.Expand the "Sound, video, and game controllers" section.Right click on your sound card and select "Uninstall."Reboot your computer.Verify whether the problem persists. Also, what is your notebook's product number? This document can show you where it is located.Have a wonderful day.http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Audio/HP-Pavillion-dv6-notebook-audio-recording-issue-windows-7/td-p/2737617

Extremely frustrated I've looked and tried to find a solution to no avail When the notebook boots up it gets to the login screen I wouldn't be able to do anything at that point but I can log in because I have a fingerprint scanner from there I'm dead in the water The only way to shut down is to hold down the power button While the computer is in bootup I have touchpad keyboard function I can escape to boot options BIOS repair etc and have normal functionality while there but not in safe mode I have ran SFC with commands several times chkdsk with commands several times nothing changes SFC says it found problems but was not able to fix all of them and keyboard Notebook and on Pavillion HP touchpad 3225dx dv6 Frozen the last chkdsk found nothing wrong Here are the events leading up to had disk errors and bad sectors in old hard drive could not repair cloned old hard drive to new hard drive there were errors but the new hard drive booted and worked for the most part correctly in the process of trying to fix missing setup files for applications and other miscellaneous small issues I ran troubleshooting updates chkdsk sfc etc removed various applications and added a few nothing worked I installed Revo uninstaller to remove Kaspersky Internet Security as it is THE MOST stubborn application to remove I've ever experienced The reason I mention that is because I went through my computer trying to find the leftover files even after Revo because Kaspersky was still running after re-installing it and uninstalling it again There were some files in System that had kaspersky attached to it's description I stopped them from running and deleted them They were close to the kb files and after researching which files Frozen touchpad and keyboard on HP Pavillion dv6 3225dx Notebook to remove I remember in the end of the post it said it wouldn't delete Frozen touchpad and keyboard on HP Pavillion dv6 3225dx Notebook a certain file beacause you wouldn't have keyboard functionality I made sure I didn't but I can't help Frozen touchpad and keyboard on HP Pavillion dv6 3225dx Notebook to think now that out of the files I deleted some of them kernel I may have deleted the mouse and keyboard files in error I tried a System Restore of the most recent point prior to the issue and it did not work I think now that I should have tried it again at an earlier point but didn't and I did that from the repair module obviously since I couldn't do it anywhere else I have tried since to do another but the restore points have disappeared The last time I had a working touchpad keyboard in Windows I ran sfc scannow offbootdir d offwindir d windows at boot in the command prompt I got the same message that it found errors but did not fix them all Then I ran chkdsk f r from boot at the command prompt When I returned to my computer after a couple hours I rebooted and no longer had a touchpad or keyboard I am up in arms and extremely frustratd as I feel I have tried absolutely everything to get them to work again I hope that the only option I have left is to format and clean install I do not have a full back up and can't get one fully executed at this point Please help Thanks in advance to any suggestion and assistance that you may be able to provide it's much appreciated The following link is to the support page of my Notebook http h www hp com ewfrf wc product product amp lc en amp cc us amp dlc en amp lang en amp tmp track link
If you have (and should have) a USB keyboard and mouse connect them and see if they will work.
Since your file system was already corrupted you cloned the bad files to the new drive.
If the USB devices work you should do a Repair Install.
If that doesn't work do this: Using System Recovery, Factory Reset and Minimized Image Recovery Options HP Pavilion dv6-3225dx Entertainment Notebook PC | HP? Support
From this tut:
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
On newer models HP Recovery may offer a Minimized OS Recovery option when booting from F11, which retains only the OS, Recovery Manager, HP Support Asst, and HP Wireless LAN. This is as close to a clean reinstall as you can get without doing one yourself.
● If you clean reinstall only to C and leave all other partitions intact, F11 Recovery key should still work later if you need it.
● You can also Extract HP 3rd Party Software from RecovCD.
● Problems with volume control lighting and HP Quick Launch buttons have been dealt with here where you can also get further support.

Sounds like it might be time for a reinstall to refresh the OS and overcome any lingering infection. Follow these same steps for Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 particularly when it comes to drivers and Updates.
Otherwise work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 including the hardware tests.
hp pavillion laptop 15-p067ca model, purchased year ago, came with windows 8.1, was not updated to windows 10. seems to have a bug: on start up it welcomes me as a user "vladimir" asks for password and then hangs up forever with the white screen and unresponsive. Password I'm sure is right, because if I type different password, machine comes back with "Incorrect password" message. What do you think is a problem and how to go back to factory settings? I have not made a recovery disc. Any comp supposedly have a recovery partition, and Recovery Manager but how can I do anything if Window does not come up?
@vladimir5? Look at the video here. http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03489643 REOhttp://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/hp-pavillion-15-notebook-15-p067-Windows-8-1-recover-factory/td-p/5698011
I have this Presario 1810 that wasn't saving the time, so I opened it up and replaced the CMOS battery, it was one of those tiny 3V li jobs.
Well, the clock now stays, but the video is all messed up. Now when I start it up, it just rolls and rolls, slowly washing out to white.
What happened? I took battery back out, same thing no difference.
What the heck did I do? This thing has no battery, just runs off the power cord.
Several weeks ago I bought the new HP Pavillion dv9574ea notebook and the HEADPHONE SOCKETS do not work - there are two. Only the speakers work. Even when I put a working set of headphones which are the right size, I cannot hear anything through the hearphones. The normal loud speakers however keep working, although they should switch off when the headphones are plugged in.
Please see the screenshot of the drivers active (in system 32 folder) and other details about the headphone socket.
Thank you for any help.

So First off I am sure most of you who are looking at this will think it is an easy fix and trust me I wish it was I have spent the entire update Software Software mode Issue boot, After (Aero, currupt) Safe day before this post searching for common fixes to issues with no luck First off here is the scenario I went go get on my PC that has been running flawless since December and the first thing I notice Software Issue After update (Aero, Safe mode boot, Software currupt) is it came back from sleep or idle whatever you want to call it This seems to happen now and then and I believe it happens because windows installed an update over the night Wednesday Normally this is no big deal I go about my way and all is fine So I noticed that some open files I was working on in excel have duplicates one set is read only one is not I closed all that down and we were all set The other big thing is the Aero feature was dead So I went online and hit ALL the usual fixes running the diagnostic downloading the specific MS diagnostic tool resetting the service multiple times restarts even some registry updates I found NOTHING worked The interesting thing is the only part of aero that is not working is the glass feature and the peek feature All the mouse icons and other attributes seem to be working I have an Nvidia GTX card so I updated to the most current form of the drivers nothing I delete the drivers and install the original CD drivers nothing I then delete the driver and try to use driver sweep to remove them This is when I notice that I can not boot into safe mode It just restarts when it gets to a login screen The other thing I noticed is my two installations of Autocad and Inventor are DOA they fail to launch and brings up the error report window So begrudgingly I reinstall and get the same error All other software works flawlessly So I am at my wits end I wanted to try a system restore to before the changes but the default system restore size only allowed and that was the original update at night I made a change and that one was gone I only have an OEM win disk so it appears I can not do a repair and all I can do is do a full reformat I am trying to avoid this route if at all possible so this is my last ditch effort to find an answer I have searched these forums and nothing works as of yet Thanks for any help P S I have also been getting an error when uninstalling software I have run a memory test I have scanned with AVG free amp Malwarebytes Custom Built PC Win pro ver build Service pack GIGABYTE GA-X -USB LGA Intel X USB ATX Intel Motherboard Intel Core i - Bloomfield GHz LGA W Quad-Core G SKILL Ripjaws Series GB x GB -Pin DDR SDRAM DDR PC EVGA -P - -TR GeForce GTX Fermi Superclocked MB -bit GDDR PCI Express x HDCP Ready PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk II W High Performance PLUS Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL GB-DX quot GB SATA II SSD x Seagate Barracuda ST AS TB RPM MB Cache SATA Gb s x Seagate Barracuda XT ST AS TB RPM MB Cache SATA Gb s

Hi I got very interesting problem here I just build new PC Albatron KX - XV XP Kingston DDR Mb RAM Maxtor DiamondPlus Gb CD-ROM CDRW Floppy When I first turned new PC quot on quot - everything went OK All three fan s two on motherboard and one on case turned quot on quot too Then I heard one short beep I access CMOS setup and tried to auto detect my HDD - no success my HDD was not recognized I tried to change jumpers from MASTER to CABLE SELECT - with same result Both my CD-Rom and CD-RW floppy drive were recognized by CMOS but interesting thing is when I setup sequence Floppy CD-Rom HDD system wont boot from either of them I only can see black screen with some info on it motherboard name processor model how much memory and then system starts to look for HDD but can not find it and hangs I tested HDD on my anoter PC CMOS according does not to boot rekognize does New PC: seq build not HDD, system boot and test went OK I tried to switch HDD CD-Rom and CD-RW connectors between IDE and IDE connectors on motherboard - still the same nbsp
Hi, Just a thought but probaly not so since (Atapi and Floppy are being detected) Be sure to chek that the Clear CMOS jumper is set to the normal mode, usaually (pin1 to pin2).
Copy the Drive Parameters off the Max hardiskoff and manually enter them in under Primary IDE in BIOS.
2nd, just a thought but hav you chekd for the proper orientation of the signal cable for the hardisk to make sure pin1 red is properly orinted on the disk and the end goin to the controller on MB. Also, try chngin out the Primary IDE signal cable with a known good one. Let us know.
I have an HP Pavillion zd7000 laptop that runs on Windows XP. When I turn it on it starts to boot and then gets hung up saying "windows is starting up" but it doesn't! I've tried booting it in safe mode and looking around for the answer. Right now I'm defraging it, hoping that helps. I don't have a restore CD or a Windows XP CD, unfortunately! Any thoughts?http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f10/hp-pavillion-wont-boot-194756.html

I have a HP Pavillion that when I turn it on, all I get is a white screen on the monitor. I tried to boot with the original recovery discs and while the cd drive spins, the light just goes to yellow and nothing happens. I tried to boot up in safe mode with the same results.
The HP Pavillion A124on will not start. please advise how to proceed to boot up. THX.http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f10/pavillion-wont-boot-312850.html
I just put an old computer together and it woant boot. First it didn't send any signals to the display so i thought it was something wit the BIOS so i removed the battery from the motherboard to reset the BIOS...after thet i got it to start...almost...it say something about bad CMOS settings for the CPU or something...
Now every time I start the computer i have to reset the BIOS and then when the computer has been on tor about 10-15 sec it just jams :/
I think you should replace the CMOS battery. I think it's dead.
I have a Dell Dimension 4500
I GET POWER BUT NO BOOT!!!
When I power it up with only: The motherboard, Power Supply, Video Card, 1 Stick of RAM, and the Processor I dont get any beeps On the back of the computer the diagnostic codes tell me "Memory modules are detected, but a memory failure has occurred." The thing that bothers me is that their is no video out signal, and i am not getting anything on screen. Is thier any way to findo out what is wrong without buying the ram. PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO RESET THE CMOS. Maby that is the problem. The computer has worked before And I dont know what the problem is. It has to be bios/COMS related because nothing is coming up on screen. please help!!!!!
There should be some CMOS reset jumper on the motherboard. There are many instrucitions to do that. Optionally, you can unplug power cord, hold the power button for about 10 secs, remove your CMOS battery (the one inserted in the MB) and wait for about half an hour to be sure.

have you replaced the CMOS battery? Are the CMOS jumpers loose?
Hello I have trouble with MB Foxconn A -PE with Pentium IV Prescott CPU When I press power button HDD and CPU fan spins up but screen remains blank there is no beep from MB speaker and LED on MB is blinking I tried to reseat every component and cable many times but only way how to get it working is resetting CMOS by jumpers When I do it PC boots up normally and works without any problem But when I shut down that PC I have to reset CMOS every time when I want to boot It seemed that the problem is in a battery that keeps BIOS settings alive so I replaced it When I did it it seemed that problem is solved and I could boot OS for about three times but next day the problem returned This problem has started to appear after I tried to replace that noisy P fan but PC didnt start up when I resetting possible after CMOS only Boot pressed power button so I put stock cooler back Any suggestions nbsp
I'd say power issues..Try a new power supply if you can get one.
Hello everyone long story short I helped my friend update his Bios so I decided to check mine I had version No cmos boot after clearing or something and asus is up to so I decided No boot after clearing cmos to update Update went fine and I started up I noticed that the CPU was running hot about - c above normal and I figured the bios settings must be different I decided to reset the cmos and go in and change them from the defaults Well the Sabertooth fx doesn t have a cmos jumper It has a CLR-RTC jumper it may do the same thing I m not sure don t have the manual so I just pulled all the cables and pulled the battery Put it back in and got one post beep accompanied by the board s quot Boot device LED quot light being on Just the one beep and no video signal so I can t see if the bios is there or not I ran a tester on all the power cables power is fine Any ideas Thanks update Swapped out to my old video card and same results so that doesn t seem to be a problem thank god I m thinking hard drive at this point but I don t have another to test The board only has SATA ports and the only other drives I have in my pile are IDE The boards SATA ports also point out to the side which I hate and interfere with my HD cage so I have to pull the mobo to unplug the cable I don t see how what I did could ve had any effect anyway nbsp
Hi New issue on a friend s notebook Running Win XP Home On start-up PXE E Media test failure comes up after the Win XP HP Pavillion Will Not ZV Boot 5000 splash screen Went into BIOS and made sure hard drive is first boot then CD ROM drive I disabled the Network and floppy does not have one for good measure I ran a self-test on the hard drive minutes under TOOLS and it PASSED I have a bootable Norton disc so I made the CD-ROM the first boot option and the laptop just sits with a blinking white cursor in the top left screen I rearranged the boot options re-seated the hard drive unplugged the AC cord removed the battery and pressed the power button for seconds I pressed F selected SAFE mode and the computer scrolls through all the lines of text and then reboots to the Windows XP splash screen I have read hundreds of scenarios for the PXE E message and most of them point to a faulty HD with the PC resorting to boot from a Network which the laptop is not configured to do So despite a PASS on the self-test of the laptop s hard drive is this the issue Is there a way to make a bootable XP Home CD make the CD drive the first boot sequence and see if the laptop boots using the CD Thank you Adam nbsphttps://forums.techguy.org/threads/hp-pavillion-zv-5000-will-not-boot.826513/
Hello, I'm having trouble booting Hp Pavillion dv4, I purchased A new cord for it, (for that happened to me before,) but even with new cord, I get ABSOLUTELY no response of any kind. No light For power, No light for hdd, no flickering, nothing.. I removed battery and just used cord, still not even a blink.. I fear it's the MoBo .. What do ya think? Thanks In Advance..
As I see it, the possibilities are bad power supply, bad main board, broken plug in the laptop.
I know I'm one among many, but this is what it does.
power on with all led's on, the HD buzzes for 15-20 secs, the screen does not turn on at all, and then it reboots again, and again.
any suggestions welcome.
my only working comp has ubuntu 10.04 beta
I have an HP zv5000 and it started up with a message that says,
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."
So I did that with my original Setup disc, it started to load stuff on a blue screen and then the message at the bottom said that it was starting windows, but it gave me a black screen with about a dozen choices of what to do next.
I don't know which one to choose. The other alternative was to press 'enter' and partition the drive. I don't know whether to do the partitioning or not.
Is there a choice in the list that I can choose?
You don't want to partition...if you partition or format all of your data will be lost.http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f10/hp-pavillion-zv5000-wont-boot-375107.html

take out the hard drive and slave it to another working PC, do chkdsk to fix the error
i just bought a asus p5b mb and installed it with a core 2 duo and everything was fine i overclocked a little then the c2d was running hot so i took out the mb took the hs off c2d then put more thermal paste on the put hs back on then put motherboard back in now everytime i boot up it says new cpu installed and when i enter bios and go to save and exit it locks up but remember it worked fine until i took out and put back in also windows xp starts off dark then gets brighter when its loading it also takes like 5 minutes to shutdown this was all fine before taking mb out and cpu out
Please do not multiple post, it's against the rules.
It would also help if you set out your problem with sentences and punctuation as many people simply don't have the time to read a single unpunctuated monoblock of text.
However, getting back to the problem, be sure that you have not applied too much paste. A VERY thing film is all that is needed, too much can cause problems.
The paste is conductive, so if it runs off the CPU die it can give problems.
Also try removing the CMOS battery for 10 minutes with the PC powered off at the wall. Then reinstall, that should clear the BIOS to defaults, but if the paste has intruded into anywhere it should not have, the BIOS may be detecting the CPU incorrectly.
I have a ECS K7S5A designed for Athlon XP (Throughbred up to XP2600+) 200/266 Mhz FSB.
CPU burnt up, so i got a Sempron 2800. Worked fine, but in the computer property it said it was only running at 1.03 Ghz. I did a lilttle research online and found out that my CMOS might need to be resetted, so i did it.
After that, my computer boots up for like 5-10 seconds and dies. Keeps doing it nonstop. I resetted the CMOS several times, took out the battery, disassembled everything and put back together, but still no luck. Any clues? I'm probably wrong, but do I need to get a Athlon XP cpu to get it working again since the MOBO was resetted?
Thanks in advance...
I resetted the cmos by toggling the jumpers. Also, i put the burnt cpu back on, and the computer turns on and stays on (but nothing happens). I just did this to see check if the power suppy was bad or the board was dead...anybody can help me out? Thanks
Can any 1 point me in the right dir if poss?

The system will not be able to hold BIOS settings unless the battery is in.
You mentioned 2 things that happened to the computer but not what the results were. Where did she put the drive? Did the system work after you tried the wrong RAM? Did either of these things cause damage, and if so, what damage? Did you check all your connections inside after changing the RAM sticks (things get loosened very often)?
Are you saying that Windows actually boots OK, though slow?
My Dell dimension 4300 will not power up..ONLY when the cmos battery is installed!! When I take out the battery it powers up ok. I replaced the battery and the same problem. I did not mess with the jumpers on the mobo. Just removed the battery for a day and the power cable was detached so no power was available. Any Ideas what may be causing this?
Exactly how far into the boot does it get with the battery installed ?
Does it show a key to press to get into the Bios ?
You say you replaced the battery, was the replacement brand new ?
Well the other day, my monitor stopped getting a vga signal...
so i checked the connections and then decided to reset the cmos (changed the 3 pin connector next to the battery, and then back, right?)
Now I get a VGA Signal .. but only the very first boot up screen shows
It shows a big graphical "Syntax"(name of motherboard) and then goes blank, and that's all I see.
What should i do?

Good morning to everyone. Why am I see CMOS settings error, press DEL to enter setup, press F1 to continue during boot up on everyday? Besides that, the CPU making loud sound during boot up and also when I am using my computer on everyday, I am not sure whether the fans or the HDD is the culprit.
Go into BIOS (DEL) and load defaults (either first screen or exit menu). Open the case and stop the fans with your finger for a second or two and see if the sound cuts.http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/373347-cmos-settings-error-during-boot-up.html

Your CMOS battery is dead That's all.
Pop it out and go down to a hardware store or a radio shack and get a replacement. It's about the size of a quarter and is usually located near the bottom right of the motherboard.
This is my first build All the components are new except the DVDRW Everything went pretty smooth during the build except for this little issue my computer won t load into Vista normally when powered on I can get to the bios screen IF I take out the Mobo battery and CMOS to boot cleared start or Need reinsert it If I do that I can get it to load to the Bios screen I then can enter the bios settings Need CMOS cleared to boot or start and configure everything However when I save the bios thinking I m about to boot to Vista nothing happens My monitor goes into stand by mode but all the lights and fans still run like the computer its working but other than that the computer is dead The keyboard doesn t wake the system the mouse doesn t wake it Its basically on but no one s home Ok so I take the mobo battery back out and start the computer again but this time I dont go to the Bios settings I just go to the option to leave original bios settings and continue and presto windows loads like normal Problem is I can t turn the darn computer off because then I have to go through the same procedure of taking out the battery out That means I can t reboot either I went through the entire Vista re-booting process popping the mobo battery out to load Imagine the aggravation Vista works like a dream once I m up and running it All programs I ve loaded and whatnot work fine I just have to set the clock every time I power on I did change the mobo battery on the brand new mobo just to be on the safe side and rule out dumb things like a bad battery I flashed my bios to the latest and greatest from Asus too Still the same issue It seems to be a bios problem but I can t figure out what the issue is Any ideas Heres my build AMD Athlon X Asus M N -AM GeForce Corsair MB PC DDR MHz Galaxy GeForce GT MB Ultra LSP w Power Supply nbsp
A defective motherboard... replace it
I have an HP A250N Dektop, P4 2.6GHz, 512MB RAM. I damaged the motherboard while inserting a flash drive into the USB port. The computer froze and after reseting was dead. I replaced the motherboard, ASUS (HP) P4SD-LA SOCKET 478, with an identical motherboard. When powering up the CMOS screen stays on for 25 seconds, then the screen is blank with a flashing cursor for another 25 seconds with no other activity. Then the computer boots normally and works fine. Any ideas?
Often the delay is with a specific piece of hardware. Try to simplify things as you can. Hooking up only what you need to boot.
Hello, I noticed about six months ago a memory problem was showing in my mini view on my xps 420. I removed the boards and reseated them and the error went away until now. I ran the diagnostics and followed the error code. It said my cmos battery was bad. I changed the battery and now it will not boot. I ran the repair cd with no luck. Can someone offer some suggestions ? Thanks--- Larry D
Remove the CMOS battery.
Unplug the power cord.
Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to fully drain all residual power.
Put the CMOS battery back in, make sure you put it in correctly.
Plug in the power cord.
You should get a CMOS configuration error message. Press F2 to go into Setup, load defaults, set date and time and boot options then see if it will boot.
My 6 year old HP desktop will no longer boot. When I power it up I get fans spinning (very loudly) and the HDD and Optical drive LEDs flash briefly but there is nothing on the display at all. I don't get the HP logo or the XP starting screen, nothing.
I have checked for loose plugs. I have tried inserting a Windows XP disc in the Optical drive, nothing.
I suspect that the HDD may have got corrupted, or something similarly important has gone wheels up.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Similar symptoms I've had, and it turned out to be a dead CMOS battery. And 6 years does seem like a long enough time for the battery to die out.http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f10/solved-hp-pavillion-desktop-wont-boot-646523.html
Hello this my first time on seven HP multi-boot Pavillion problem fourms and the reason why I signed up is because I have windows home premium x bit which has a problem HP Pavillion multi-boot problem I installed windows xp professional x bit and when I rebooted I got a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner I read online that its better than a plain black screen but I did not find any answers Later I installed linux zorin x bit and I could see that my files are still there but I can't use windows I realized the reason it takes forever to boot is because there is a boot menu but I can't see it because my monitor says quot input signal out of range change settings to x Hz quot I noticed I can select operating systems but windows isn't one of them Today I just installed ubuntu x bit and the boot menu still didn't come up I need help to get windows back Please help immediatly
Hi MexicanPygmy, Welcome to SF
Sounds like you have a problem with the mbr when installing multiple OS
You could try running startup repair of your install disk to repair(you may need to run this up to three times) or you can try other fixes, have a look at this MBR - Restore Windows 7 Master Boot Record
If your not sure of anything dont rush in post back and we can help

Hi, I think your hard drive is just about shot. I'd suggest that if anything you need and do not already have a copy of, personal things like pics etc.....not programs..... you get them backed up someplace if you have not.
You can test the hard drive using the manufacturer's utility. Do you know what make and model drive you have?
The computer's model you posted is not enough to get to the correct support into. The info on the back or underneath the machine on a label is what we need. There should be a slightly different model ID found there. Please post that.
There are more than 300 sub models in that M900 family. Is it a desktop or a notelbook?
My daughter has an HP Pavillion Entertainment PC, Intel Core 2 Duo. Runs on Vista.
Just today on start up it went to HP invent screen and then stops. Will not go into startup and I've tried multiple restarts or tried to get to safeboot but can't get to any screeen.
Until more help comes along you can visit these 2 sites to see if it helps you out:
This morning when I attempted to start my HP Pavillion desktop, I pressed the power button as usual and here is what did and didn't happen:
1. The power button light did not come on (normally it glows blue).
2. The CPU fan did come on
3. There were some familiar clicks (perhaps the hard drive starting?) but then only the CPU fan appeared to be working.
4. Nothing appeared on the monitor.
5. No power to the keyboard (no caps lock or num lock LEDs)
6. CPU fan continued to operate.
I would appreciate any help you could give me.

Hello and welcome to Techspot.
The beep codes can have different meanings, depending on what bios it is.
Take a look at this beep code list HERE

I own a Hp Pavillion dv6700 laptop and recently it wouldn't turn on for more than a few seconds. I tried troubleshooting by removing the battery and turning it on just with the powersupply, no difference. Vice versa.
I purchased another charger to see if that would help. Despite trying different combinations with chargers, batter in/out, the computer still only turns on for a few seconds(nothing comes up on the screen) and then turns itself off.
Reading some other forums similiar to this problem has yielded no help.
Another thing - the port that I plug the power supply into it seems like the cord can move around a bit.
I have an HP Pavilion Elite e9220f, I am running windows 7 premium edition.
I scanned for viruses with Norton, restarted, and it came up to a black screen with a blinking curser in the top left corner of the screen. All I can do is ctrl alt del and return to the same screen, I can get into bios and switch from my hardrive to boot from cd rom, but that is no help. My computer came preinstalled so I do not have a windows disk or anything to boot from. F8 F11 and nothing else work except F10 to bios.
Does ANYONE know anything i can do to boot up in anyway..
"I do not have a windows disk or anything to boot from"
You were supposed to make a set of recovery CDs yourself when you first got your HP computer. There is an HP Windows utility installed which allows you to do that, and the user guide points out that fact.
Without any system backup CDs, you can start recovery from the hard drive by repeatedly tapping F11 as soon as the HP splash-screen appears at boot time:
Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows Vista) HP Pavilion Elite m9340f Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
I have an intermittent failure to book. When this happens, the computer beeps constantly but does not turn on. If I turn off the back-up power and wait a few seconds, the computer boots OK when I turn it on. What is going on? Is this a serious problem? If so, how do I fix it?
I am using an HP Pavillion 8755c with Pentium III and 384 MB RAM. My OS is Windows XP Home Edition.
This is only happening about every 10 tenth time I start the computer. When the computer is turned on, a message is displayed (white text and black background) that the "CMOS/GPNV Checksum Bad, CMOS Date/Time Note Set, Press <F4> to Run SETUP".
Windows XP is started and the time for the computer is set to January 1, 2002 01:00AM. I can manually change the date/time in Windows to the correct time. However, this is happening only occasionally. How can I prevent this from happening?
I have ran anti-virus scan and no viruses were found. Also, downloaded the latest version of Adaware and Spybot Search & Destroy and scanned the computer, nothing was found. Ran Disk Defragmenter and ScanDisk and no errors were found.
I apologize for the length of my post but I have gone thru several repair Can't CMOS after 7 battery or Win replacing boot steps in trying to solve my problem I turned my Win- PC on and got the error message quot CMOS GPNU checksum bad quot Research suggested one cause might be the CMOS battery which I replaced I entered BIOS and everything looked good except for the date time which I reset I then rebooted and got the error message quot invalid partition table quot At that point I inserted my Win- installation DVD to try and repair my installation Unfortunately no Can't boot or repair Win 7 after replacing CMOS battery OS was found on the hard drive So I selected the option to re-image using a fairly recent system image stored on an external drive After about an hour the process was finished and I got the message that the restore was successful A system restart was then required but it was not successful I once again got the error message quot invalid partition table quot I Can't boot or repair Win 7 after replacing CMOS battery also got the message that the reason that the startup repair was not successful was because Can't boot or repair Win 7 after replacing CMOS battery 'no OS found on disk quot Any help advice would be appreciated At last resort I could try a complete reinstall of Win- but I would probably lose a lot of data that I had been backing up via the system image
I would try the following:
Turn off the laptop/desktop
Unplug the External USB HDD (and all other USB devices)
Make sure ALL media bays (SD Card reader and DVD drive) are empty
Go into the BIOS config on boot up, and configure the boot sequence to leave off everything except Internal HDD, and CD/DVD (turn off the USB and secondary (if any exists) HDD from the boot sequence)
Reboot - and hopefully windows should resume without any error message.
I recently bought a Bioware U Pro MB and installed a P CPU On st Boot. on not helping.. cmos Freezing resetting boot I receive Freezing on Boot. resetting cmos not helping.. the following message pre- boot CMOS Chechsum Error - Defaults Loaded Warning CPU has been changed or CPU Ratio changed fail Please re-enter CPU settings in the CMOS setup and save beore quit At the bottom I have the following options F to enable system configuration this does nothing F to select Boot device after post this does nothing F to continue if I do this the pc boots and runs perfectly DEL to enter setup Now this is where I m puzzled The very next time I boot the PC I get to the same point and have only the F F and DEL options and the PC locks up none work But I do not get the CPU error messages this time If I remove the jumper from the CMOs amp pins I don t even need to clear the cmos with the amp pins just remove it from the st and reboot the computer I again get the st window once again and can use F to startup again The problem nd screen amp lockup then persists every time I reboot Again removing the cmos jumper and rebooting fixes the problem for the next boot I ve tried replacing the cmos battery as well as upgrading the bios online to no avail The thing that perplexes me is that the PC runs beautifully that st boot when I m given the quot F to continue quot option Any help would be appreciated Kyle nbsp
no offense, but i'd expect as much from biostar. it would be in your best interest to return that if possible and get a name brand such as intel or asus. generic motherboard products often fail or refuse to work for no reason and the only option is replacement. have you tried to update the bios?
I have an Acer Veriton X490G,with Core i3 cpu,4 gig RAM,running a windows 7 32 bit...now this machine requires the CMOS battery to be reset all the time it to boot. I want to do a fresh install of Win XP, Tried setting the CD-ROM as the First boot priority on the CMOS, saved that, and restarted the computer, still it boots straight to Harddrive.
Is there a way around this ?.
CDROM is working good and XP Disk is good too ( used same on numerous installations ).
Do you have a floppy drive? If so, then use a Win 98 boot disk to fdisk the drive and remove the partitions so there is nothing to boot to.
If no floppy drive, Windows 98SE boot CD image.

I have an asus a8n sli-premium, I recently updated the bios and got a "checksum error". I powered down, and wasn't able to start up again. I was instructed to reset the Cmos jumpers, I just found out that i should have removed the battery first. I think my PSU is causing the failure to even start up (the mobo led doesn't light up, and psu fan doesn't turn at all), but could this have been caused by my goof with the jumpers (or when when I get the new PSU will i have boot problems)? Thanks.
give us detailed specs of the system, it's parts (with thier respective manufacturers), and don't leave out the psu.
are you sure you applied the appropriate bios update for your motherboard?
