Hardware Diagnostics Short DST Failure Code

Q: Hardware Diagnostics Short DST Failure Code

Possibly a quick question - I'm unable to load Windows and I've got Short DST Failure: Q0AFV3-7PD89P-PXPALJ-60Q503 with Product ID: K5G63AA#ABA. Is this just a failed hard drive or something else? I can install a new HD without problem. If it's something else then I've obviously got bigger problems. That failure code sheet isn't exactly written for the semi-technologically inclined. Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Hardware Diagnostics Short DST Failure Code

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,          The Failure ID refers to Hard Disk 1 Full Test Failure. You have to replace the HDD to get the unit working.

A:Hardware Diagnostics Failure Error

Hi @23-B030ea,Welcome back to the HP Support Forums!  I understand that your hard drive cam up with an error when you ran the UEFI tests. I am happy to give you a hand with this. I checked the Failure ID you posted and it gave me the SMART Drive error code of 305. Now if your hard drive is still working for you, I would highly recommend that you make a backup of any and all data that is important to you as soon as possible. A SMART drive test is generally a predictor of drive failure. It could happen today or in several months, but rather than risk losing everything it is best to take precautions. Also see this document: HP Notebook PCs - Hard Drive Failure Errors: Imminent Failure, Smart, BIOHD, HD535, etc Once your data is safely backed up, you should probably look at a hard drive replacement. Please let me know whether that works for you, and if it does resolve your issue, please mark this post as a solution. Kudos would also be appreciated.

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Media to install Windows/drivers/software on the new hdd. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Battery calibration:

A:Hard Drive short DTS check failure code meaning?

Hi, The  error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test ( DST ) and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  This is also consistent with the boot issue you describe. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know - include the full Model No. and Product No. of your 15 series notebook - see Here for a further explanation. Regards, DP-K

The SMART short self-test that failed may have detected some certain sectors on the drive that are bad and predicted an imminent HDD failure so I would recommend you contact the lenovo helpdesk and report your findings as you likely need to send the unit for service.

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.
You're issue might be similar to this thread.
Can you try to run an HDD stability test by running Lenovo's HDD Diagnostic
If you have a Western Digital drive, see Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows
If you have a Seagate/Samsung drive, check Seatools for Windows
If you get any errors on the HDD test, your HDD is most likely failing and you will need to contact lenovo for service.

The device is a 16GB Solid State Drive (SSD) that is used by the Lenovo box to speed performance by caching frequently-used areas from the main hard disk. The error indicates a fault with the SSD (I have had the same problem on 2 different SSDs after using them for about a year each). I'm not sure why the SSDs seem to keep doing this - perhaps the write cycle count of certain blocks is reached too quickly in this environment, or maybe the ExpressCache software used for this function is not completely bug-free. You can continue to use the SSD as it seems from my experience that it continues to work, but not quite as efficiently as the faulty block(s) would mean the data there would be fetched from the Hard Disk after all. It would be good to hear more on this from Lenovo so that we can figure out the best course of action.

A:Possible hardware failure-screen?mobo?-videocard?-Help please+hardware failure?!

You might try re-seating your video card. AGP cards tend to be a bit tricky; even a small point of non-contact can create havoc. If you have access to another video card, you can try swapping video cards and see if the problem goes away. I suppose cable connections are also a possibility, although I have never seen the symptoms you describe with a loose cable.

Are you able to boot into Windoze (sorry, I couldn't tell for sure from your post)? If so, any video-related problems there?

Hope this helps.

I've had some blue screen errors in the past and I wanted to run some diagnostics on my hardware before I play any games on it. I ran the dell diagnostic tool that came with my pc, but it requires user input for the video card test. A lot of the questions aren't straightforward and so I could have gotten error due to this. Should I just run a third-party test instead? For the memory test...should I just run memtest86?

Also, when updating my ati catalyst it okay to just install over an older set. I attempted to do clean install once, but ran into a lot of problems.

I had a post going in the security thread until I realized it wasn't a virus problem... it was a hardware problem. Could anyone give me some advice or possibly a link to a diagnostic tool that would help me solve my problem.

Windows 2k freezes at the splash screen so I can only run my computer in safe mode. This leads me to believe it might not be a critical piece of hardware that's acting up.. maybe? Anyways, I haven't altered any of the hardware recently. This problem just sort of popped out of the blue.

Can anyone who has hands on experience with PC diagnostics software and/or hardware recommend any particular software or hardware testers.

How good is AIDA64, a review I read on this looks quite impressive.

There are many motherboard and general hardware testers on ebay, are there any that stand out as being particularly reliable that will also work on laptops..

I am also interested in finding good data retrieval software for recovering data from faulty and/or corrupt hard drives. Are there any that perform better than Stella Phoenix.

I repair a few PC's a month and it would be very useful to have some equipment that can confirm the health of mobo's and CPU's without having to diagnose by a process of elimination.

I don't have the finance to experiment with the various testers that are available.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

A:PC diagnostics software/hardware

This type of Computer testing hardware and software is not really necessary or even useful to an experienced computer tech. The motherboard testers are only as good as the tech is. A shorted data bus will give false results at best. The useful tools include a spare power supply, an inexpensive power supply tester, spare memory, a spare IDE and SATA Desktop hard drive (and notebook drives) and a good true RMS multimeter... and that's it

I think its the program that started up automatically one day shortly after I got this W7 on 12/23/12. Like most pop ups, I quickly X'd out of it not knowing what it was.
The second time it happened, I let it go & it showed 100% ok. I think that was in January & I haven't seen it pop up since but if it has & it finished & disappeared on its own,ok.
Anyhow, I think I relocated it manually & Alerts was blinking. I clicked on it & saw this.

I think the Freedom Scientific Mirror thing is the program the original owner asked me for & I asked in here. I can't fing the thread thou.

I am working on an HP Pavilion P6130A with 2Gb RAM, 500Gb HDD and running Vista Home Premium.

The system was turned on but plugged into a surge protector. During a severe thunderstorm a loud 'pop' was heard from the system and it totally died. Now it won't boot up. Power supply and fans are functioning but no video output.

I've inserted a hardware PCI diagnostics card which comes back with an error Code 60. Under the Award column the description of the error is "Setup virus protection [boot sector protection] functionality according to setup setting."

Can someone please tell me what this error code means and what, if anything I can do to fix it?

A:PCI diagnostics card Error Code 60 - What does it mean?!

Not sure on the code but those cards can be next to useless. But if the system was hit during a thunderstorm then you should do a visible inspection of the motherboard for blown components. Then start by swapping in a known good power supply first if nothing is seen. Next would be to remove any network card or modem if they are removal cards. Also I assume you've disconnected all USB devices as well.

You have to consider how the system would have been come into contact with the lightning strike or power surge, the obvious ways would be the power supply, a network cable through a network device that plugs into power and a phone or cable line, or a phone line connected to a modem, or a USB cable that connects to a device that plugs into power.

You can check to see if any of the devices that were connected to the system are damage as well.

The hard drive has indeed failed and needs to be replaced.  Your system will have a digital entitlement for Windows 10 - you can download an ISO and write the file to a flash drive or DVD to use it for reinstalling the operating system onto a new hard drive.

Welcome to SF ccwtech .

Usually I would like to have more than one dump file so manually check the minidump folder.

If dump files are present in that folder copy them to the Desktop, zip and upload in your next post.

As for the dump files uploaded;
The bug check is 0x9F which is DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE that happens in
transitions between power states most commonly S0 (ON state) > S3 (Sleep state)
or vice-versa. You can read more HERE.

The most common cause is a device driver but sometimes it's the hardware itself
that is at fault.

A driver has failed to complete a power IRP within a specific time (usually 10 minutes).

The PC Boots up ok in Safe Mode, but I can't run anything..the round circle swirls and then disappears. Can't run anything, it is very slow booting up.  I tried to chkdsk but it hung at 6%.  So I ran the advanced diagnostics which report Short DST failed.  All other tests pass.  FAILURE ID  9PMXNM-5BD884-XD002K-6OUH03  with PRODUCT ID XP267EA#ABU.  Hard Disk 1 Hard Disk Test: FAILED.The disk drive has a regular sound, so I feel that the drive has a physical problem.I have gone into CMD and accessed the drives, but when I look at User Documents directory, there are no files.  I am assuming that the drive is inconsistent.  The PC was Windows 7 64 bit but has been upgraded to WINDOWS 10 so don't know how to approach the change???Help!!

A:Short DST Failure

Hi, The error code does confirm a failure of the short disk self test and indicates the drive will need to be replaced. Firstly, regarding the HDD, your notebook is listed as coming with a 500Gb Hard Drive, but you can just as easily install a 750Gb HDD if you want a bit more space - the drives on the following links are examples that would be fine for your notebook. 500Gb Hard Drive 750Gb Hard Drive. The procedure to replace the Hard Drive starts on Page 45 of your Maintenance & Service Guide. Regarding reinstalling Windows 10 on the new drive, as the machine has been previously upgraded to 10, a hardware profile ( Digital Entitlement ) will have been recorded by the activation servers. As long as the previous installation of Windows 10 had activated Ok after the upgrade from 7, you can just create your own installation media and perform a clean installation as detailed in the guide on the following link.  Note: At the activation screen, select 'I don't have a Product key' - Windows will activate automatically once the installation has completed. Regards, DP-K

A:Short DST Failure

"Short DST Failed"

DST stands for "Drive Self Test" which means the hard drive is starting to fail.

For confirmation of this, download the drive-makers diagnostic software (the DOS version which is bootable).
The links are at top of this page:

The download will consist of an ISO file from which you create a CD using Nero if you have it, or IMGBurn from here:

Boot your laptop from the CD you've made and run the test.

Hi guys
I just had a power out in my place due to a short circuited toaster...
After that, my pc wouldnt start. meaning:
I turn it on, the lights turn on, the all the fans start spinning, there seems to be some strange "woofing" noise (from what i think) the psu, i hear one long beep (2-3 seconds) and of course nothing on the screen

what do you think i should do before calling a pc repair man?
I'm pretty handy so should be no problem opening up the pc and pulling stuff in and out..

A:PC failure after a short circuit

if you know the type of bios it is [american megatrends/pheonix/IBM....] then google the beep numbers with it, so if you had an american megatrends motherboard with 1 long and 3 short beeps then look for a couple of sources that confirms that it's THAT part that might need replacing.

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media) Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files. No video.

According to , the problem is the video card.

Motherboard: ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe

Video card is eVGA GeForce 7800GTX KO 256 MB PCIE

I removed the GeForce 7800GTX KO 256 MB PCIE , installed a new eVGA 7300 GS, as a test. Same problem.

ASSUMING that the 7300 GS is working, what can I do, other than replace the motherboard?

The ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe motherboard has 2 PCIE slots. I tried the 7300 GS in 1 slot; then the other. Perhaps the 1st slot needs to be occupied when a video card is placed in the 2nd slot.

Thanks for your advice.

Identical problem here.. hard drive light goes solid and pc just stops for 1 min, still able to move the mouse cursor but cannot slect anything or alt-tab etc. Any alt tab or double clicking is cached up and then all fired off at once when the minute freeze is up.

I'm pretty certain now it's down to my Asus P5K-E motherboard (which is what I assume the original poster has)

I'm looking towards M/Board now as I have swapped drives and changed CPU from Q6600 to Q8200 also switched from Vista 32bit to Win7 64bit and still get the issue.

I alleviated it for a while by switching my SATA 300 drive down to 150 mode by setting the jumpers.

Have flashed the P5K to the latest bios with no joy.

Full specs are..
Q8200 Quad
Asus P5K-E Wifi Premium

4GB Ram
lightscribe 20x DVDRW
Sony Bluray Drive (installed after problem had already appeared)

An issue I had resolved a few months ago has begun occuring again wherein the laptop has difficulty loading things when started up and soon after crashes and has to be restarted I assume this means the hard drive has failed again and so I have no doubts about how to resolve this but I am posting this query to ask Why Why has a laptop I have had for not even a year DST short failure... drive again. Hard check at this point already had the same problem occur twice even with replacing the part that broke the first time I'm willing to assume it's something to do with excessive use as I will admit it is switched for a Hard drive short DST check failure... again. good part of most days often for several hours as I play games on Steam on it I do not currently plan to have the hard drive replaced again as this is clearly an issue that is going to keep occuring the way things are and so I may as well get a Hard drive short DST check failure... again. PC that won't break every time a gust of wind hits it Any information on why this is occuring and how it could potentially be prevented in the future is appreciated particularly if it provides a solution that doesn't involve paying an extortionate amount of money

HP diagnostics returned error code 9lhvwc-5rg85u-mfh15f-60t903 during a hard drive short self test this evening. Prior to the test, the disk drive was working very slowly, as if it had trouble reading data. I am able to log in with windows in it's normal mode, but the drive performs poorly. Safe mode is better. I own an HP dv7-6175us with serial number 5ch134ijx7.

A:Hard Drive failure during short test

I suspect it's an issue with the header, because the disk drive was also clicking, and it was the click you hear when the accelerometer halts the hard drive. I suspect it's impact/shock damage. It was repeatedly clicking for about 5 time before I shut it down manually.

A:short SD failure, laptop start up fails

There are data transfer kits available. They will allow you to back-up thee entire operating system along with all your saved files to a new disk. I would suggest replacing your current drive with a SSD, as hard drive disks tend to not last as long when they are being moved around a lot. You will also appreciate the performance boost.

Did you do the extensive Test? If so, and you got the same response: Failed. I'm afraid, you might need a new Hard Drive. If your PC is under warranty, call HP Support, they will fix it, but you will have to send it to them.  If out of warranty, you will have to purchase a Hard Drive and replace it or have someone install it for you, like a computer technician. Hope I've been of some help, I'm not a computer expert,  but the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. HP Supporters are wonderful here. So i got this hp 2000 notebook pre installed win 8 from a friend. I did some HP tests and shows HD short DST Failure.
I was able to refresh the pc and it does run per sa but constant always getting dst failures. So i assume its dying. I bought a new hard drive for the unit. Now if i put it in, will windows setup pull the product key from the bios? I put windows 8 on a usb key. Can anyone guide me through the process?

A:hp 2000 notebook Hard Drive DST short failure, Reinstall?

Hi, if the PC came originally with Windows 8 preinstalled the product key is embedded in the BIOS so it would be detected automatically. Here is a great tutorial how to install Windows 8 Clean Install - Windows 8.

Good luck, werty

Hi, The 24 character error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test ( DST ) and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know. Regards, DP-K

I have an hp pavillion that will not boot up. It was extremely before this so I tried to do a system restore. It will not boot up at all now, just shows the HP screen. I ran diagnostics and I get: hard drive short dst check, failure ID: 0LPU13-7SH84G-MFPWMF-60SQ03. Do this indicate a hard drive failure?

hi, the 'dst' means drive short test, so a problem is showing on your hard drive. You may want to consider running the longer test offered in the diagnostics section on your hard drive, but of course running tests on a failing drive has a risk attached. Do you have all your files backed up? If not, do you have another computer available, you could slave the drive to it in order to try to get your files off. Or, Can you get in to safe mode on your inspiron, as you start the notebook press the F8 key up and down to get to the safe mode menu. If you can do this back up your files before running the extended test.

Ok I have been away for hardware this failure? is a weeks and my system used to run I switched off while away I had a large windows update on my return and all was fine apart from a buggy Explorer fault that has been ongoing for a while but was not a big hassle all worked ok then I had a few serious freezes with the only way out was cutting the power then I got cpu overclock error I is this a hardware failure? tried to use repair consol then I tried to reinstall windows and got a bsod with error IRQL not less or equal then later page fault in non page area is this a hardware failure? then my win disk would not be recognised when I was mostly complete with a new win instillation on another hd It appeared that whatever I tried I was thwarted by a bsod at the last moment I think its the graphics card anyway I have now taken the C drive hd and set it to slave in my spare parts machine and it is totally accessable and I will copy all the data I need Ok before I procede the specs Faulty machine asus A N X deluxe creative FX xp xp home add up to date os on maxtor gig then gig seagate and gig seagate sata hd x ddram pc ithink I had removed the tv card and all usb devices I have now also got a failed xp os on drive D I did make a ghost image which is safe on the drive still in the faulty machine drive E partition on second hd seagate At the moment I am a bit stumped Should I copy the important data to a dvd after installing the writer from the faulty machine then format the drive C Which appears as D in the spare parts machine Put it back in the faulty machine and hopefully install the ghost image to it any tips appreciated Having looked at previous posts I am worried that memory could be faulty also any Ideas folks much appreciated nbsp

A:is this a hardware failure?

I would suggest testing the memory(swap with known good if possible) Same with the CPU(if OCing, try returning to defaults, same with memory timings)

So recently my computer has been unfixable Let s start from I Hardware think. Failure, the initial boot The majority of the time my computer will turn on light CD drives motherboard mouse and the fans but not the keyboard mouse or hard drive I keep restarting it with the same response The odd thing is that if I let it set for an hour or so it will start up normally When windows runs It runs fine for about - minutes Then it starts hitting some three second or so lag or frame rate frame rate drop then it will fine for like two second then start again It goes Hardware Failure, I think. back and forth between low frame rate and being normal And then it would freeze entirely Hardware So I originally thought that this was a hard drive malfunction I thought that maybe I had messed it up when moving my computer So I bought a new hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP The problem persists but no longer freezes What is wrong -Danny nbsp

A:Hardware failure id

Terminal for the hard drive but not necessarily for the laptop. I assume this error comes up under the hard drive test in diagnostics. The hard drive can be replaced. Are you under warranty?
