Q: Hard Disk Short DST and Long DST check failed, but passed SM...

Hi nbsp As stated I have an HP envy laptop that I purchased year ago Just days ago my warranty has ended At the same point in time I was also trying to roll back to a previous windows install as there was a pesky app that was installed when I lend the laptop to my friend When I got it back it works just fine but it had that malware in it that I want to remove nbsp So I fired up system restore and go on restoring It finished doing so until nbsp it restarts When it restarts I was stuck in the loading screen with the HP logo for hours to which I decide to fire up the restore through the recovery media All works well until I got stuck in the installation I got stuck at When I searched on the internet why the reason might be because the wi-fi adapter is still on I am able to open it SM... Long Short DST check but Disk DST and passed Hard failed, up and take it off for a moment But because I need to go to work I decided against it I turned the laptop off and set off nbsp When I got back I can't even let it proceed to the installation saying that there's an issue with teh windows install and it needs to reboot Did that same thing several times and nothing happened nbsp Then I decided to go to BIOS and do the hard disk check It passed the SMART test but failed the Short DST as well as Long DST It produced the error code nbsp MFUC T- RG K-CD WMG- DK nbsp Is it possible for me to resolve the issue by my own through another reinstall Or is the HDD really is ruined If this is the case I'm probably just going to go ahead and replace it with an SSD

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. You'll be asked if you want to run chkdsk at the next reboot. Enter "Y".

So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching.  When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue.  When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed.  My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though.  So I ran a System Quick Test,everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine.  Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.

I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check.  SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). To fix false positive hard drive errors, please try updating the hard drive firmware. You can check whether an update is available by going to the  Get software and drivers page. You will need to put in your Model Number and then click the links that pertain to the computer configuration and see if a hard drive update is available.  You could also try to do a  Disk Defragment to consolidate files and move them to another section of the drive where errors are less likely to occur. Did this reply resolve your issue or answer your question? If yes, then please share the good news! My laptop wouldn't restart after I updated it and a hard disk error came up so I ran a hardware diagnostic test and it said the smart check passed but the short DST failed. I don't know what to do now.

Did you do the extensive Test? If so, and you got the same response: Failed. I'm afraid, you might need a new Hard Drive. If your PC is under warranty, call HP Support, they will fix it, but you will have to send it to them.  If out of warranty, you will have to purchase a Hard Drive and replace it or have someone install it for you, like a computer technician. Hope I've been of some help, I'm not a computer expert,  but the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. HP Supporters are wonderful here. From what I've learned on here, I am just trying to help out another.  Hope it works out for you.

tbh I'm not sure if I'm running windows or I'm using the default it shipped with nbsp So what happened was first my computer would boot up fine but it would lock up occasionally I would be watching a video click to a different tab stuff like that Short Check: Drove FAILED DST Hard and everything would become unresponsive and freeze didn't just happen to my browser would happen even with my search bar Restarting and giving it a moment would fix this problem but it got to the point it happened or minutes after start up I decided to do a reset chose to not save my files didn't do a wipe though because there's nothing critically important and I thought it could be a virus Did the wipe got an error a good bit in that the wipe couldn't be done I do not remember the exact wording Tried again same thing It directed me to some options chose the launch windows normally one just to see if I was still having problems Did this and what would happen is computer would boot up HP logo cycle back to computer boot up HP logo it was in a loop Waited a good nbsp hour and a half to two hours would not stop Turned computer off manually and Hard Drove Short DST Check: FAILED on a few times same problem Turned Hard Drove Short DST Check: FAILED computer off then on f system quick test and I got the error in the title nbsp FAILURE ID QBS X- L -XD WMA- WD PRODUCT ID P A UA ABA Solved View Solution

I recently replaced my HP battery after which i tried to calibrate it. But, whenever i start Extensive Hard disk test it shows the following problem:Hard Drive Short DST check--- FailedHard Drive Smart Check---- Passed Failure ID-- 9QD5A3-6NL83J-MFPWX6-6OUE0  What should i do??

A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion Notebook and getting the start up error message failure ID. This error is DST Short Test Failure code. Hi I been using my laptop as usual today and all of a sudden a notification popped up saying hard drive failure imminent. I restarted the laptop, pressed f2 and ran a system test. Everything in the test passes expect from the Hard drive short dst check, which failed.Failure ID: 0SG2J1-7K289U-XD7WLJ-60VW03I'm not sure why this has occurred. I regular run virus scans and defrag the hard drive. The hard drive is 1TB and around 100GB is used. The laptop is only 2 years old and ran out of warranty around April/May (typical). I don't have any recovery disc or back ups, is the laptop now unusable? I try to boot up but the laptop either freezes on login or on desktop. I have all my uni work, including my dissertation report on there, please help.ThanksDale

Dear HP Team, My Laptop is showing a problem. It's display is getting unresponsive suddenly while working and then the display gets black.. I did all the diagnostics in HP hardware diagnostics.  My laptop isn't starting , when i open it i get the hp logo then a black screen , when i made a fast system test the hard drive short DST check failed with a failer ID: PLW6J2-6SL88N-MFPWXG-60RR03 and a Product ID: E2G95EA#ABV.my main concern is the data stored on the hard disk what can i do to get the laptop working a don't loose the data ?

Stop using the laptop. Replace the hard drive with a new one. Get a SATA to usb adapter to connect the old drive (which you will remove) to another computer to try to salvage data. There is a good chance data is still recoverable this way.

Getting black screen error boot device not found/no OS daily.  Been trying to do a backup which then results in this error. Ran UEFI quick test which gave failure ID: GK763H-6KA88D-MFPX0K-60S703 The quick system test passed but gave SOFTWARE ERROR for the HD Short DST check. Please advise.

Hello my laptop fell from a table and stopped working. I kept getting a blue screen with an error code 0xc0000185. I ordered the recovery Disks from HP but when I went to recover the machine, it sort of reads the cd and then I get the HP logo and the circle just spins and spins. First off I have a HP 2000 Notebook PC with Windows 8 and I used Internet Explorer 10.
 
Processor Name : AMD E-300APU with Radeon ™ HD Graphics.
 
A few days ago, my computer started getting slower & slower, not responding, freezing up and even going to a blue screen before coming back to the page I was at.
 
So I put it in Safe Mode with Networking and ran Malwarebytes full scan - nothing.
 
Then I hit F2 at reboot and ran some of the tests on there - Battery was Okay, memory was okay, but this one failed :

Your hard drive is probably failing. I would get your important data off it as soon as possible. After your important data is off download Seatools for Windows and do a diagnostic to confirm the hard drive failure.

After doing the system tune up for hard drive ( or something like that), a lot of things passed, expect for one thing, called Hard Disk Long DST.  The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced.  A retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used-Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba,etc. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Media to install Windows. Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11-  window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?

Boot tine disk check ran this morning. Everything was pass until last item. From memory ( the dos screen changes so quickly) the failed item was something like C:\ WINDOWS\BCD.

The computer nonetheless seems to run properly, so what is the significance of the failure and what need I do to rectify matter? Please!

If you can, I'd suggest getting some more RAM and testing it.. If it's still giving you the 1 long and 2/3 short beeps then it could have blown your motherboard..

Lists the 1 long 2 short as a video issue, and a continueing beep as a RAM issue, so if your getting both then I'd say either the boards gone and it can't read anything, or it just blew out both... Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails with an error "Hard disk [3F0]" that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. Hi, i have hp pavilion g6 laptop and its upgraded from windows 8 to 8.1 then windows 10.  From last few days i was getting "Memory_Management", "Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error" and so many other errors with blue screen. Yes you need to replace the hard drive. Since you have upgraded to Windows 10 it is very easy to get recovery media directly from the Microsoft Media Creation Tool. For most people, the problem is not physically swapping out the hard drive, but restoring the operating system since they do not have recovery disks. Hey all I'm technologically challenged and this is my first time posting on the forum so lemme know if I miss anything....Like the subject says my notebook was freezing and running slowly I didn't know what was happening but long story short I can't get past the boot up screen anymore with HP logo and I ran diagnostic and got hard drive short and long dst failed. A retail laptop/mobile 2.5" SATA hard drive can be used.Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, etc. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity.For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Sorry to say files also die with a hard drive. Best practice with any computer is an external USB hard drive to back up files.

Bought this Pavilion 17t in December of 2014.  Upgraded to Windows 10 about 6 months ago.  Just last week the laptop got stuck in an automatic repair loop. Hi I'm new to the forums so I hope this is the right place to post this nbsp But anyways I basically dropped my HP Notebook -f Fail? An issue I had resolved a few months ago has begun occuring again wherein the laptop has difficulty loading things when started up and soon after crashes and has to be restarted I assume this means the hard drive has failed again and so I have no doubts about how to resolve this but I am posting this query to ask Why Why has a laptop I have had for not even a year DST short failure... drive again. Hard check at this point already had the same problem occur twice even with replacing the part that broke the first time I'm willing to assume it's something to do with excessive use as I will admit it is switched for a Hard drive short DST check failure... again. good part of most days often for several hours as I play games on Steam on it I do not currently plan to have the hard drive replaced again as this is clearly an issue that is going to keep occuring the way things are and so I may as well get a Hard drive short DST check failure... again. I know my hard drive is failing. I cannot boot my computer tried every method. It's in the automatic repair loop. I'm going to have to send it in I'm pretty sure of it. However I was able to access the notepad through the command prompt and noticed that I can still see my files in different folders. Is there a way for me to back up my files? Is there a way I can access a program from command prompt and transfer files? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Be careful, if you do install onto the PC - you will wipe the data and software OFF your hard drive.., you have been warned, only use the option "try ubuntu"

NOTE: if you only see a black screen - then this is a known issue, and can be resolved by using the following:-
On some hardware configurations, you need to set some kernel parameters for ubuntu to boot or work properly. A common one is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot in to a black screen or corrupted splash, acpi_osi= to fix lcd backlight and other problems.

When i did the hard drive short and optimized dst chech in the component test to check whether hard disk is functioning well by using HP PC HARDWARE DIAGNOSTICS UEFI in my hp pavilion 15 -e009tu laptop it showed "warning " for both short and optimized checks. My hard disk was replaced fiew weeks before because of some issues. If warning is there... what to do... ?

Was upgraded to Windows 10 Anniversary and it has caused issued. Started with a unmountable boot volume error during one restart. Forgive me, as this is my first forum post, but I was running a file check on my desk top and had to restart it to get it to start, and for a while the check ran smoothly but when it got to the "USN Journal Verification Completed" part it gets super slow, and it's been stuck at 10% for almost a half hour. I can see the files (currently 134616 out of 15588) still being processes so I know it's working, but it's slow.

Does anyone who why it's taking so long? If there's something wrong with my
Computer, what should I do?

Hi

I tried to run Check Disk in W8 but it did not complete saying it could not complete the scan, so I tried to run Chksdk from the CMD prompt, I got a message that could run Chkdsk and repair errors on the next boot, I select Y
and the scan started on the next re-boot.

It went okay until 27% completed, now it has been on 27% complete for three hours.

Is this an indication of a problem or should I leave it running?

Empty trash with with Disk Cleanup in C:\ Properties.
Run Ccleaner to remove more crap.
Do full scan with AdAware.
Defragment.

Run sfc /scannow in CMD prompt with Administrator privileges.
Do a boot scan with Avast or AVG or whatever.

Run chkdisk now.

I received an error message indicating a Hard Disk Error, in which I was instructed to run the Hard Disk Test in System Diagnostics.   The exact error was:HARD DISK 1 (3F1) I then ran the Smart Check of which it passed.  I then proceeded to run the Long DST of which it failed after about 30 min with the following error: Failure ID:  PLPNXF-6T870H-MFGJWK-61F603Product ID:  E0K76UA#ABAHARD DRIVE 1 I just bought this machine brand new on Dec 22, 2013.  Based on the error above it seems that the hard drive has some serious issues and may need to be replaced.  I should be under warranty since it is less than 30 days old.   If anyone knows what that error means and possible solutions to it that would be great. Other information:  The laptop is an HP 2000 Notebook PC with a Core i3 processor.

Hi: The hard drive has definitely conked out on you and needs to be replaced and the operating system reinstalled. Contact HP technical support and file a claim under warranty to get the drive replaced. Tell them all the steps you have taken thus far and the errors reported. Also, make sure they send you a set of recovery media with the replacement hard drive, or all you will get is a blank hard drive.

My out of warranty Pavilion All-in-One Desktop computer took about twenty tries before starting. I ran HP Self test and came up with"Hard Drive long DST Failed"  Failure ID RGD5VO-000840-PXPAXF-61SG03.  i haven't seen this code in any other posts.  This is a Windows 8.1 computer.  I'm wondering if an upgrade to Windows 10 might repair the Hard Drive.  I did defrag the Hard drive which was 12% fragmented.  It didn;t seem to optimize automatically, so I did the defrag manually.  Haven't turned the computer off since. Not sure it will reboot if I do.

I get you're hearing 1 long 3 short, but what are you saying after that?

On my motherboard the LEDs are a bad sign, I'll assume your's works the same way, but checking in the manual for sure wouldn't hurt. On mine they will blink at the press of the power button, then go dim quickly, that's normal.

Sounds like a VGA issue from what I can understand so far. The Boot Device LED could be lighting up out of necessity due to the POST not being sucessful, given the VGA I would believe gets picked first, and the HDD is what would come after.

I am running Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 1. I tried to download a video, the system hung up, CTRL/ALTY/DEL did not help, and I had to turn it off with the power switch. Tried again, with the same experience. Then, when the Vista backup ran on its automatic schedule it failed, and told me it was because I needed to check the disk. That failed, both with and without the "repair" box checked. So far as I can tell, the computer seems to be operating normally otherwise. Thanks for any help you can offer!

This is the error i was presented with earlier today when i checked my mailbox An employee had trouble with his computer and told me that the computer hangs and when hes running system diagnostics he gets short DST failed My first thought was quot chkdsk r DST failed" Disk error "Short quot But when i got my hands on the laptop i tried to boot into windows vista No problems at all until minutes later everything froze just as described in the mail Ok so i booted up a Vista CD ran chkdsk r When done i booted into Vista again minutes went by hour hours hours and nothing happen Ok so nothing is wrong now it seems I figured i could run the disk self test now without any problems But the disk self test goes into SHORT Disk error "Short DST failed" DST FAILED even before it has started The only logical explaination i have for this is that the error is not correct And i uninstalled a lot of programs on his computer also and shut down a few unknown services that was not supposed to be there Everything works perfectly but im still getting SHORT DST FAILED So im having a luxury problem here Anyone familiar with this or have any solutions Maybe the disk is about to crash Im scratching my head Any suggestions are much appreciated

Backup immediately - you may/may not get further warnings from the system.

Short DST is usually a "spot check" of the disk. So I'd suspect that a non-essential sector is going bad on you.

Run the long test to see if the drive is dying. Do you want to trust the data to a disk that's in the process of failing?

I have a dual booted computer I normally just use Ubuntu however I started using Windows again I found out about Steam Issue is this afternoon I tried to boot into it but it wanted to scan my partition for errors It was already slightly corrupted - Nothing major though just a few unimportant programs and files were corrupted However the disk checking froze and I forced shut-down-ed it When I restarted GRUB stated something about not being able to find to device but it still booted into Windows Windows showed the 'Boot normally' option screen thing From there the screen goes black then my PC reboots None of the options seem to do anything failed Parition is disk check? corrupted Windows after Ubuntu can't read my NTFS partition anymore and running ntfsfix on it gets the following error Index root attribute Windows Parition is corrupted after failed disk check? missing in directory inode x No such file or directory Remount failed Input output error Does anyone know a way to repair or recover the data Or is it eternally lost I don't see how it can be that badly damaged probably just a small issue in the lookup table or something

Running XP pro Sp2, IE 7 & Mozilla 3.6 8 . Using Mozilla, facebook, farmvile game. Mozilla has the file plugin-container.exe, which taskman shows hogging resources. Out of the blue my pc started the beeping randomly while using mozilla. When I close, no beep since. All other apps are standard, usual and up to date. No new hardware or software. Recent past & some random scroll bar moving by it's self, have not found a fix. That happens on both browsers. Should I remove or disable the plugin-container.exe, & would it affect mozilla & farmville? I read where it suppose to stop the browser from crashing, but it doesn't. Also have virtually the same setup up on another pc routed with this one. Please give me some insight!
