I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Your hard drive has failed and needs to be replaced.  Once you replace the hard drive then you'll need to reinstall the operating system (OS) and software/drivers so that your system is operational.

Hi, The 24 character error code is a Smart HDD failure and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP ( with the 24 character code ) and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know. Regards, DP-K

My notebook started having problems, showing the sad smiley face saying that the computer ran into a problem and needs to restart. The blue screen showed the following exception: UNEXPECTED STORE EXCEPTION The next boot fails with a "Boot Device not Found... My computer was working fine, it turned off fine. Later when I turned it back on it wouldn't go past the black windows logo screen with the loading bar. Then every time I turned it on I got the improper shut down screen. None of the safe mode or configuration options would run. I tried all the boot options and none would work. Tried using start up disks and couldn't get repair or anything to work. Got a message that windows couldn't find mass storage device and HDD test had read failure. Everything pointed to a bad drive. For the heck of it I tried windows reinstall and it worked, even tho I lost my info. So I don't understand why a working drive would suddenly become inoperable when it's really not. What would do this? Don't want it to happen again

On some Toshiba's I've worked on, including my own Tecra, I press Escape and Function 1 to get a boot menu and with an XP CD in, there's a three second only window in which to "press any key" when the prompt appears. Are you seeing that prompt when you boot from CD? You might also benefit from formatting that hard disk in the other machine if you already started to install on it.

After using the system Recovery DVD error msg. response "hard disk not exist" what does that mean.

A:hard disk test failed

Please tell us a little more about your computer. It sounds like either the hard drive has failed, or the hard drive has come loose from the motherboard. It is also possible that it is a problem with the motherboard itself.I am assuming you are running the Hard Drive Test from BIOS. Have you tried placing the hard drive in a different SATA port on the motherboard? It could be that just the SATA it is currently connected to has failed. You could also place the hard drive in another computer and seeing if it gets recognized then, indicating it was a problem with the motherboard (in which case that computer is pretty much screwed. Contact your manufacturer to see if it's under warranty and if they'll replace it).If neither of these work then most likely the hard drive is shot. You'll pretty much have to either get the hard drive replaced by the manufacturer or buy a new one. One last thing, have you tried running system recovery off of the Vista Installation Discs?

A:BSOD HDD Failed - Install Windows 7 on external hard drive from boot

As a temporary work-around, you should be able to run Linux from the CD or USB.
This would allow you to use your machine until a better solution is suggested.

If you can get Linux to run you might be able to format the internal HDD (using GParted for example) and then reuse it (temporary solution).

Okay, so I have a Toshiba P25-S477 laptop. The hard drive on it has failed, and caused me to get the error message in windows (when it ocasionally boots) that windows needs to be validated, yadda yadda but it won't because the key "has already exceeded it's number of uses" Well.... How can I get it to boot from CD if I have no floppy drive to load drivers on with?

Hi dionrodrigues,
Is your PC new and have added any new components to it recently (RAM in particular)? The error code you are getting usually appears when there is new RAM installed. If you could upload the BSOD it would be helpful. Another thing to try would be reseating your RAM.
As for your hard drive, I would suggest connecting it with different cables and in a different port. Afterwards, you could consider running a brand specific diagnostic tool on the disk to check its health. There are third party software solutions to be found online, however the once from the manufacturer provide the most accurate results as they are developed for such drive and know the firmware best. You can upload a screenshot of the SMART status after running an extended test. It would be best if can test the drive on a different PC with different SATA cables.
If you manage to access the drive I strongly recommend doing a backup prior to any testing just to be on the safe side.
If the drive has bad sectors it is recommended to change it, or if you use it not to trust it with important information. Having regular backups is always a good idea
Keep me posted,

The computer had a corrupted pci.sys file error. I tried to copy the file from a xp sp1 cd, and it wouldnt let me from the repair console. I did a repair and got an error message saying pci.sys was corrupted or something along those lines.

I decided to try the repair console with a windows xp home sp2 cd and it let me copy the pci.sys file to c:\windows\system32\ so now I think I have fixed the file.

When i go to load the computer xp automatically jumps to the installation screen because of the failed repair.

How can i get that to go away and have the computer boot to the hard drive?

do i need to edit the mbr or something?

My 2 TB WD MyPassport Ultra has stopped working. In disk management, it shows unallocated and when i try to initialize it, it says an I/O error has occured. This hard disk was bought only 20 days ago from amazon.

I tried inserting it on different computers, through different cables etc.

I read a lot of threads on this forum on similar(same) problems. I performed WD Lifeguard test, and my hard disk failed both quick test and extended test. What should I do?

The suspected cause is that it was being used on a computer when the system showed blue screen of death. It has not been working since then.

A:Hard Disk not recognised; Unallocated; Lifeguard Test failed

If hope that you had a back up of your stuff or there was nothing important on that drive. You have to contact Amazon and get a replacement. The BSOD did not cause the problem, the problem caused the BSOD. There is a surprisingly large number of HDs that are corrupt when purchased. You should not have a problem trying to exchange it. I do wish you good luck and sorry about your situation.

Have a PC (Windows XP Pro) with 2 drives. One SATA drive with XP on it and a PATA (IDE) drive with data. Today the machine refused to start saying system disc not found insert boot disk.. In bios, both drives are being seen. The SATA drive is set as the 1st boot device. When I disconnect the IDE drive - the system boots as normal. If I plug it in if fails. If I attach an external drive (USB) I get NTLDR file missing on boot up. Seems the system is trying to boot from either the IDE or any other drive than the SATA when they are plugged in.!!
Was all working fine before..?? The IDE is set as a slave drive. Any ideas..

Go back and recheck the bios settings. In many bios, you can set both boot order ie CD, HD, Floppy and also hd order.

It would also help if you posted your exact system specs; ie make and model of mb, brand and size of hard disks in question, etc, etc.

I have a HP Probook 4530swith Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. When I turn on the PC the windows does'nt start and give a option of starting windows manually, which does'nt work, and repair windows. Repairing windows with windows 7 CD did not help.

I then decided to reinstall windows 7, but while installing, on the select disk page, it shows a error saying no drives found.

I then performed a Hard Disk Test which resulted in failure saying:

Reason according drive diagnostics to failed test. onboard D: why is because it has D: drive according to onboard diagnostics failed test. less than free space right now it has GB free of GB now when going into the drive it s of course the recovery drive and says if removing anything in the drive recovery will be impossible now I have no problem with my drive D: drive according to onboard diagnostics failed test. having that little space however I like my D: drive according to onboard diagnostics failed test. diagnostics to be perfect so is there any way to clean out some recovery files It s recycle bin is empty and thats all disk cleanup does and while I m here on my C drive theres an invisible recycle bin with all the crap I ve ever downloaded on this computer in what I m guess a extremely small file type for the use of recovery however since I had over GB worth of KB or less files deleted I do modifications and graphical add-ons for video games it makes up a good minutes of my virus scans so is there a way to delete those without harming my computer nbsp

I can still load things from the primary hard drive fast, anything from secondary hard drive is extreme slow. Following that, I pressed ESC during boot and selected Diagnostic and this is what was displayed: Testing CPU: CPU Test - Passed. Hard Drive Connection Test - Passed. Boot Test - Failed. Error Code - BIOHD3, Warning - No Active partitions. Whoever undertands what the diagnostics found, please explain if there's anything I (or anyone) can do. The buttons given were "Scan and repair" and "Cancel and restart" I did not press either and have come here seeking help. Please advise as to what steps I can take. Thanks a million in advance

1) Boot your PC into safe mode.
2) Delete c:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\temp\SoftwareUpdates.exe (do not double click/run it!)
3) Delete any suspect programs as c:\ProgramData\xxx.exe, i.e. rmIhrYfwFjUdy.exe or QFUDzzwTiL1aQy.exe. They had weird names, were launched from ProgramData, had no Description or CompanyName.
4) Empty the recycle bin.
5) Restart PC.
Think it will help you fix the problem.

Trying to install Windows 7 no special controller drivers are required because Windows 7 already contains the common Microsoft controller driver.

Just one question: was the SSD drive formatted and new partition created before trying to install Win 7?
Should be done?

Are you using the Toshiba Recovery disk in order to install the system on this SSD drive?
Should use such disk? the recovery disk could be created using the preinstalled Toshiba Recovery disk Creator which was part of the running system preinstalled and configured by Toshiba

So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching.  When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue.  When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed.  My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though.  So I ran a System Quick Test, everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine.  Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.

A:SATA disk failed and Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed

Hi there @nmulji,  Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check.  SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). To fix false positive hard drive errors, please try updating the hard drive firmware. You can check whether an update is available by going to the  Get software and drivers page. You will need to put in your Model Number and then click the links that pertain to the computer configuration and see if a hard drive update is available.  You could also try to do a  Disk Defragment to consolidate files and move them to another section of the drive where errors are less likely to occur. Did this reply resolve your issue or answer your question? If yes, then please share the good news! Let others know this reply was helpful by clicking the Accept as Solution button. You can also show your appreciation by clicking the Thumbs Up. If you require further assistance, I would be more than happy to continue to help you. Boot up using the Startup Repair CD or Windows 7 DVD. (not the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disk) If you have a Netbook, you will need a CD/DVD drive.
NOTE: Make sure no USB drives are plugged in.
Do not use a USB Pendrive for Startup Repair.

1) Use the Rebuild BCD in this tutorial:
How to use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows

2) Fix MBR.

I recently ran a scheduled diagnostic test of my PC with the manufacturer's diagnostic software. I received two error messages and the advice to promptly replace my hard drive. The first message was Failed (Error code: WHD20-1VR) and the second was Failed (Error code: WHD16-T57). The apply to Targeted Read test and Smart Short Self Test respectively.

So I ran Chkdsk for the C: drive and received no error messages.

Which is correct and what should I do about it? The error message won't go away on the software.

Thanks for helping.

A:Question: Failed Targeted Read Test and SMART Short Self Test

CHKDSK is a very basic check that mostly checks file system and can be set to scan for bad sectors. The manufacturer's diagnostics actually check the physical drive to make sure its operating within the designed parameters and is more thorough.

You should replace the drive.

Hello, my xps 8500 has been showing "no boot device available" on start up. I understand this to be hard drive failiar but am hoping for a temp quick fix just to access and transfer files to a memory stick.
When enitialy starting up, raid volumes status is displayed as "disabled" and bootable No
But when pressing F1 at the "no boot device available" screen and it restartes, the raid volumes status reads "normal" but bootable remains No.
Running windows 8 and have cheacked that boot mode is UEFI and secure boot is disabled and such. Have also run the diagnostics using f12 and got error code 2000-0142.
Would appreciate any help, what I could try thanks.
Also if I were to buy a new hard drive, how would I install windows again, as I never received a copy on disk from dell.

I was running Win XP which finally failed and I was able to enter in safe mode (only, no networking) and ran all the tests I could think of. Hard drive is ok and so I attempted to repair WinXP from the installation CD. However, the PC failed to shut down and restart so I eventually force closed it. Now it won't even load past the initial black windows screen, don't even get the option of going into safe mode.

Is there any way I (or someone) could access the hard drive to retrieve the data? I guess I could reinstall the OS but don't want to do that yet as I'll definitely lose the data.

Any advice would be appreciated.

A:Win XP failed, repair failed -- can I access hard drive?

Sure, there are many ways. Depending on what you want in the end decides how to proceed.

If you have a lot of space free on the drive, you could boot off a linux dvd and create a new partition. You'd have to shrink the existing, then make a new one. Then you could just copy over the data from the old one to the new one. Then reinstall windows onto the old partition, and copy your stuff back (then delete the partition and expand the remaining to fill the rest of the space).

You can also just boot off a linux disk and copy it to a thumb drive or whatever.

Or you could remove the hard drive and place it in another computer.

Also, I'm not convinced you lose the data if you install Windows again. I'm pretty sure you can install without formatting the drive. Your programs won't work, but it shouldn't overwrite any of your data. This is a non-ideal solution though.

I have a Dell XPS 15z laptop, spec. is i7-2640 processor, 8GB memory, 750GB hard drive. The problem is that it often freezes and when restarted it suggests no hard drive, "No boot device found". If I go into the BIOS there is no hard drive, if I boot into the diagnostics screen (F12) and run thr tests on the hard drive it comes up as passed, if I then restart the laptop it will boot into windows 7 Ultimate.
Evertime it freezes it won't boot after a restart unless I run diagnostics then it will start OK.
My thoughts are that it is hard drive, although all tests I have carried out on it suggest its OK, one of the times it booted into windows I ran the Seagate seatools and it was fine.
Anyone any suggestions as to the cause?

Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11-  window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?

A:Hard Drive failure (Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed)

DST:Fail means  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

A:Need to test Hard drive

If you don't have one already, get an external HDD dock with a connection appropriate for the PC you want to connect to (such as USB 3.0, USB 2.0, or eSATA), plug in the drive, then try to see it on the PC you are using. You may need to format it if it hasn't been already (you didn't state if the drive is new or used). Once you can see the drive, use a program like Speccy (the free version will work quite well) to check the drive condition.

Hello JDS,

Are you able to run the latest HGST Windows Drive Fitness Test (WinDFT) version from within Windows to test the drive?

If needed, with the drive connected to another computer?

Is it ok to swap a hard drive from an Acer laptop to a Gateway? Just to to test if the Gateway's problem is the hard drive? Will that cause problems? Will it ruin the hard drive to try?

A:Ok to swap hard drive to test pc?

I dont see why not. There should not be any issues that come to mind; other than just making the connections on both systems are the same. Other than that; it should a-ok to do a swap.

How to test a laptop hard drive

I am trying to upgrade my older laptop hard drive but my comp doesn't seem to recognize that it is there. Could this be because: 1) It is a bad drive 2) the ide connector is not compatible (shouldn't any ide connector work?) 3)the drive is not compatible with my laptop 4) some other reason.

The hard drive is a IBM Travelstar 4.78 G
The laptop is a Micron Trek Transport II

Is there a way to test the drive in the laptop? I'm guessing not if the laptop can't even detect it. Does that mean the comp isn't even reading it, or it could be bad? Ugh.

Hello, Im having probs with my hard drive making harsh grinding noises, is there a test I can use? Any help is appreciated, cheers

A:hard drive diagnostic test

Depends on the make/model of your drive. Western Digital has an excellent little utility to check THEIR drives. Do you know what kind of drive you have? You may need to open the computer and have a look on the drive. Then go to the drive's manufacture's web site and see if anything is offered.

Hi Guys I recently installed Vista after having my machine running XP I have WD gb drives that I have both put into external enclosures both with gb partition each BOTH drives worked fine in XP I stress this Now here is the issue One of the drives works fine The other drive is showing up in Computer as quot Local Disk quot but does not recognise any partitions In hard disk managment it says that the disk is in raw format I took the drive into my friends computer who is running XP and the drive is still fine Every file there and completely writable I read an article the following quot The solution to this annoying problem I had it on one PC seems to be to locate and delete the file INFCACHE which may be corrupted and causing the problem To delete this file you will first have to modify its permissions so the users group can access it right-click on the file- gt Properties- gt Security INFCACHE file It s located at C Windows inf scroll down to the file Note to see INFCACHE you must set Windows Explorer to display hidden and system files quot So i tried that will Drive and (this Vista Hard External test you) and it did nothing I have installed all updates nothing To make matters worse I thought a reinstall of the generic driver would be External Hard Drive and Vista (this will test you) enough to kick start the new driver cache NOW when i plug the drive in i get quot Windows needs a driver to install this hardware quot FOR AN EXTERNAL HDD MAN WHATS WRONG Vista looks online for the driver but doesn t find anything I even tried to manuely locate the driver by selecting the default driver that windows was using for my External Hard Drive and Vista (this will test you) second external harddrive they are exactly the same device afterall Still nothing I know that once I can actualy install the driver I could just format the drive in vista but i m not going to do that It is completly full to do that I would need another drive to backup onto I thought I could try to do a partition recovery on the drive but again I really do NOT want to since there is still a good chance that this will loose my data So Thoughts I think this will test alot of us here Nath nbsp

A:External Hard Drive and Vista (this will test you)

Ok , i got the drive installed properly again. So I am back to where I started.

Here is a interesting update, I installed [email protected] Partition Recovery to take a look at the drive. The program doesn't find anything wrong with the drive. In fact, it shows that the drive does have the partition and that there is nothing wrong with it. So I can't even "restore" the partition because the recovery software doesn't see the drive the same way that Vista does (and the drive letters are the same, so active partition reports, "I:\ (Data Backup)" and Windows reports "I:\ Local Disk RAW Format".

Any thoughts from anybody this time....

Hello, could you please tell me how to know for sure whether a hard drive is on its last legs?

How do you differentiate between a 'normal' seek noise and a bad one? How do you diagnose a terminal failure before it occurs?

I've tried the utilities from the hard drive manufacturers and third party software to check if there are any problems but nothing has come up.

I have got an external segate hard drive that connected to my laptop through USB cable, I doubt that there is a problem, then I decided to test it by using : Segate seatool utility (windows version not dos version) that I have downloaded from segate site.

I can see the external hard drive :

But the test option is unavailable!!!!

Is there any other utility that can test such a USB connected HD or any other barnd ?

I knew that we can connect faulty hard disk directly to the mother and then run the test from CD or floppy, but this is not feasible in my case

A:Segate External Hard Drive How to test it

I am pretty sure that Western Digital's Diagnosis program will be able to do it. If you get an errors, however, the drive is most likely bad.

I was given an old Toshiba Tecra S1 laptop this past August. It was a company laptop and so I didn't expect much but after cleaning up the system, adding RAM, etc., it has been running quite well.

Yesterday I ran a harddrive diagnostics by utilizing Seagate Tools for a routine maintenance session.

1. It passed both the S.M.A.R.T and the Short DST tests twice.

2. It failed the Long DST test twice.

* What does this mean for my harddrive?

A:What Does this Laptop Hard drive Test Failure Mean?

If the diagnostic is correct, the drive is beginning to fail. It should be replaced. If you have any critical data on the drive back it up ASAP.

HP diagnostics returned error code 9lhvwc-5rg85u-mfh15f-60t903 during a hard drive short self test this evening. Prior to the test, the disk drive was working very slowly, as if it had trouble reading data. I am able to log in with windows in it's normal mode, but the drive performs poorly. Safe mode is better. I own an HP dv7-6175us with serial number 5ch134ijx7.

A:Hard Drive failure during short test

I suspect it's an issue with the header, because the disk drive was also clicking, and it was the click you hear when the accelerometer halts the hard drive. I suspect it's impact/shock damage. It was repeatedly clicking for about 5 time before I shut it down manually.

A:on boot, no monitor signal, "system failed memory test"

I would start with the following:
[NOTE:] When clearing CMOS, remove power, and press power button to discharge motherboard.

1) Clear CMOS. If it boots, then go into CMOS and load setup defaults
2) Remove all cables and extra PCI cards. Only run Power Sup., Vid card, Proc., Memory, MoBo. Clear CMOS. If powers, add one card/cable at a time and see where it stops. If it doesn't power, proceed to step 3.
3) Place the mem. chip in another slot. Test. If more than one stick, try one at a time in different slots.
4) Try different Vid card.
5) Try separate power supply
6) Check Proc. (Too much thermal grease, smoke smell, cracked edges)
7) Remove MoBo from case. Look for burn marks. If you know what you are doing, try running step 2 without the case to see if it posts.

Did I miss anything? Please add if you think of anything.

On a Tecra 530CDT, ghosted an image from the original IBM to a Toshiba 6gb hard drive using Ghost version 5.1c. New hard drive stops responding after the memory test. Re-ghosting using the -fatlimit switch without success - same problem. The old drive was a Win95/WinNT dual boot. Tried updating the bios on the old drive and re-ghosting again without success. Any ideas on what I can try next would be appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried starting the computer with a boot disk? If not, try it. Does the hard drive and it's contents show up when you do. Did you fdisk/format the new drive before ghosting it? Do you get any error messages such as no OS found?

Had some problems with my lap top freezing and then going to a blue screen error message.  Told me that I did not have a hard drive or an operating system.  Usually just turning off and resting made everything OK.  Now I get the error message that my hard drive has failed the SMART test and is in danger of crashing -- I have backed up everything but now what do I need to do?

The SMART imminent failure for Hard drive is an indication that your Hard drive is on verge of failure or might fail anytime depending on usage.  Run HP Diagnostics for HDD and provide failure code of Hard drive test to HP Technical Support so that its replaced for you free of cost within warranty period of your notebook.  Kindly check the instructions over here in order to run the test for your hard drive

The issue described in this post does not affect the operating system, but more to do with a software issue. Therefore, I apologise if this thread would have been better placed in another section of the forum.

A friend informed me that he ran 'Barts Stuff Test 5' to check is his hard drive for errors, after noticing an error message upon startup stating an a hard drive failure is imminent and now has a virtually full hard drive.

To the best of my knowledge this is caused by the manual allocation of the stress test being set at 3% (those who are familar with this program will understand what I mean by this). However, he did not create an restore points and now wishes to undo this.

Are you aware of any way to do so? - In order to clear space on the hard drive?

Many thanks,

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.  Yes, the files can most likely still be retrieved.  To do this, you would need to take the hard drive out of the notebook and connect it directly to a desktop computer or insert it into an external hard drive dock/cradle and browse to the files you need.  If you feel this is too difficult then you could take it to a local computer repair store and they'll be able to do this for you (for their fee). Once you've got the old drive out, you can have another put in and recover the operating system using the HP Recovery Media and it'll put the notebook back into the same condition as it came out of the box.

You don't absolutely need to use a Microsoft account with Windows 8: you can set up a local user account just like you do in Windows 7. There are advantages to the Microsoft account but also drawbacks. I've used both and I don't have a real preference.
